As Harry adjusted to his new life at Potter Hall, he found that every day brought new opportunities and challenges. Under Andromeda's tutelage, he quickly grasped the basics of the wizarding world's history, culture, and politics. Her lessons were engaging, often filled with anecdotes about her own experiences and the broader context of the wizarding society.
One sunny afternoon, Andromeda sat Harry down in the library, surrounded by ancient tomes and family portraits. "Today, Harry, we're going to talk about the Wizengamot and your role in it. The Wizengamot is the wizarding world's governing body and court of law. As the heir to the Potter family, you will eventually have a seat there."
Harry nodded, listening intently. "So, it's like the parliament?"
"Exactly," Andromeda confirmed. "The Wizengamot is composed of representatives from Ancient and Noble Houses, Ancient Houses and Noble Houses along with other notable members of the magical community. They pass laws, adjudicate major trials, and make decisions that affect the entire magical world in Britain."
She spread out a large, detailed chart of the Wizengamot's structure. "The Wizengamot has three main sections: the Chief Warlock, the Tribunal, and the General Assembly. The Chief Warlock, currently Albus Dumbledore, presides over the sessions. The Tribunal handles small scale judicial matters or when time is of the essence, while the General Assembly deals with legislative issues."
"Who are the members?" Harry asked, his curiosity piqued.
Andromeda pointed to various names on the chart. "Members come from various Houses, like the Potters and the Longbottoms, and other influential families. There are also members appointed for their contributions to the magical world, such as those who have received the Order of Merlin, First Class."
Harry's eyes widened. "What's the Order of Merlin?"
"The Order of Merlin is an award given for acts of outstanding bravery or service to the magical community. It's divided into three classes: First, Second, and Third. First Class is the highest honour, given to those who have contributed to the society beyond most others like Albus Dumbledore."
Andromeda explained that there were three primary types of wizarding houses: Ancient and Noble Houses, Ancient Houses, and Noble Houses.
"Ancient and Noble Houses," she began, "are those that have been recognized for both their age and contributions to the wizarding world. They have seats on the Wizengamot and significant influence. The Potters, the Longbottoms and my own birth house the Blacks are examples of such houses. These houses have both long-standing traditions and a history of service and leadership."
Harry nodded, absorbing the information. "And Ancient Houses?"
"Ancient Houses are old wizarding families that may not have the same level of influence as the Ancient and Noble ones, but they are still respected for their longevity and heritage. They may have seats on the Wizengamot but aren't as highly regarded as Ancient and Noble Houses."
"And Noble Houses?" Harry asked.
"Noble Houses are recognized for their contributions to the magical world, often through acts of bravery, innovation, or leadership. They may have earned their status more recently but are given seats on the Wizengamot, these can sometimes be achieved through nefarious means like bribery."
Harry found it all fascinating. "Are there different parties which each member represents like in the muggle world?"
Andromeda smiled. "Parties aren't how different people come together because the members aren't elected. Instead each house joins a faction that best represents them. There are three main factions, the Progressives commonly called the Light faction, the Conservatives also known as the Dark Faction, and finally the Neutral faction who aren't completely on either side. The Progressives believe in the modernisation of the magical world including the easy acceptance of muggle born wix to the magical world. The Conservatives align on the side of the preservation of the magical world by sticking to traditional values and a blanket rejection of anything remotely non conventional or muggle inspired. The Neutrals on the other hand side with either faction based on the law or issue in question, they take things on a case by case basis and aren't very strongly on the side of either of those ideologies believing in a more balanced approach."
Harry takes it all in before asking "What are the most important Houses in each faction?"
Andromeda answers "The Potters and Longbottoms are typically considered the leaders of the Progressives, but for the last few years Albus Dumbledore has consolidated power because House Potter has been inactive and House Longbottom only has 1 adult member in the main line who can participate in Wizengamot meetings, Madam Augusta Longbottom, her son Frank and his wife were incapacitated at the end of the wizarding war and she was busy taking care of them and was away looking for medical treatments for them
House Black was the erstwhile head of the Conservatives but after the last war, House Malfoy with help from House Nott, has emerged as the dominant house in that faction, both of those houses were heavily on the dark lord's side but got away from those charges through bribery and corruption. The Neutrals are headed by the Greengrasses, they are a primarily business focused House more interested in the economy and commerce of the wizarding world. House Greengrass despite being in a different faction are a close ally of your own house, Harry."
Harry looks slightly confused at this and asks "How can houses in different factions be allies with one another? Are there other groups of allies like that?"
Andromeda replies "Alliances are formed by houses if they share common ideas, they might not broadly be on the same general principle of the factions they belong to. They can be formed through marriages, political agreements, or mutual interests. One of the most significant alliances is the Great Alliance, founded by the Potters and the Longbottoms. The Greengrasses are part of this alliance bringing with them a few houses from the Neutral faction. This coalition includes families who share common values of justice, inclusivity and the strengthening of the magical world."
She showed Harry a document detailing the Great Alliance. "The Alliance was formed in the mid 1940s to unite families in trying to take the magical world forward. It includes houses like the Bones, the Prewetts, and more. They supported each other in times of need and worked together to protect and improve the magical community."
"Are there any other important families or alliances I should know about?" Harry asked.
Andromeda nodded. "Yes, there are several. The Blacks, my birth family, were once very powerful, but they fell from grace due to their association with dark magic. The Malfoys are another influential family known primarily for their great wealth, though they have a darker reputation. The Weasleys, while not as wealthy, are known for their integrity and being one of the largest extended families still around. Understanding these families and their histories will help you navigate the complexities of our world."
Harry listened intently, feeling a growing sense of responsibility. "What about the Ministry of Magic? Who are the key figures there?"
Andromeda outlined the major departments and their heads. "The Ministry is divided into several departments, each handling different aspects of magical governance. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement, led by Amelia Bones, is responsible for upholding the law. The Department of Magical Transportation, headed by Wilkie Twycross, deals with magical transportation, like Portkeys, the Floo Network and Apparition."
She continued, "The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, led by Amos Diggory, oversees magical creatures, a sub department called The Goblin Liaison Office handles all communication with the goblins. The Department of International Magical Cooperation, managed by Bartemius Crouch Sr., handles relations with other magical governments. The Department of Magical Games and Sports, directed by Ludovic Bagman, manages all the sport related events in the magical world. And finally, The Department of Mysteries, led by Unspeakable Croaker handles all the covert research and many other mysterious studies of magic, they wear a cloak that shrouds their faces and lets them operate in secrecy."
Harry's head was spinning with all the information. "There's so much to learn."
Andromeda smiled kindly. "Take your time, Harry. You have plenty of time to learn and grow into your role. Remember, you're not alone. We're all here to help you."
One morning, Ted arrived at Potter Hall with exciting news. "Harry, the Wizengamot has approved the petition to unseal your parents' will. The hearing is set for next week. Furthermore, Barchoke hinted that a portion of the will has information pertaining to your parents' death, which if read in front of the Wizengamot can help bring clarity to your godfather's situation, he couldn't explicitly state what it might be, but he assured me that it would be of great help"
Harry's heart raced with anticipation. "That's great news, Ted. What do I need to do?"
"We'll prepare your testimony and gather any necessary documents. Don't worry, Harry, we'll be there with you every step of the way."
The days leading up to the hearing were a whirlwind of preparation. Andromeda and Ted coached Harry on what to expect, ensuring he was ready to face the Wizengamot with confidence. Harry felt a mixture of excitement and nerves, knowing that this was a significant step towards uncovering the truth about his parents and his godfather.
The day of the hearing arrived, and Harry, dressed in his best robes, stood before the grand doors of the Wizengamot chamber. Ted placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "You're ready, Harry. Just be yourself and tell the truth."
Taking a deep breath, Harry stepped into the chamber, his heart pounding. The room was filled with witches and wizards in regal robes, their expressions a mix of curiosity and solemnity. At the centre of the room was a raised dais, where the Chief Warlock, Albus Dumbledore, presided.
Dumbledore's eyes widened in shock, but he quickly controlled himself, as he regarded Harry. "Welcome, Mr. Potter. Please, step forward."
Harry walked to the center of the room, feeling the weight of countless eyes upon him. Ted and Andromeda stood by his side, their presence a comforting anchor.
Dumbledore's voice echoed through the chamber. "We are here today to address the petition to unseal the will of Lord James Potter and Lady Lily Potter. Mr. Potter, you may present your case."
Harry took a deep breath and began. "Honourable members of the Wizengamot, I am here to request the unsealing of my parents' will. I believe it holds important information about their wishes for my upbringing and the appointment of my guardianship. It might bring to light the circumstances surrounding their deaths, circumstances which I have some doubts about."
A blonde haired man stood from his seat on the right side of the chamber "The reason behind your parents' death is known to all of us, Sirius Black has been incarcerated and his guilt is unquestionable, I don't understand what you want to achieve in this chamber with your stunt Mr. Potter."
Ted glanced at Harry and whispered "He is Lucius Malfoy, he was allegedly a death eater but he got away through bribery and by claiming he was coerced by the Dark Lord".
Murmurs spread through the chamber at the mention of Sirius. Dumbledore raised a hand for silence. "Mr. Potter, why do you believe the will was sealed in the first place?"
Harry glanced at Ted, who gave a supportive nod. "I believe it was sealed to protect me, but I also think it's time for the truth to come to light. My parents' wishes should be honoured."
Dumbledore's expression darkened slightly, though he maintained a composed exterior. "Mr. Potter, there are many factors to consider. The sealing of the will was done with the intention of ensuring your safety, and the safety of those mentioned in the will from dissident elements. Sometimes, certain truths are best left undisclosed for the greater good."
Harry felt a surge of frustration. "With all due respect, Professor Dumbledore, I believe that the truth should come to light, especially when it concerns my parents and my godfather. It's my right to know what they wanted for me."
Ted stepped forward, his tone firm. "Chief Warlock, the Potters entrusted their wishes to this will. It's only right that Harry is allowed to understand and honour those wishes."
Dumbledore's eyes flickered with a hint of annoyance. "The decision to seal the will was made with the best interests of the child in mind. Unsealing it could have unforeseen consequences."
Harry, undeterred, met Dumbledore's gaze. "I am ready to face those consequences, whatever they may be. My parents' wishes matter to me, and I deserve to know the truth."
The chamber buzzed with whispers as the tension grew. Dumbledore seemed to weigh his options, his mind calculating the potential fallout. Finally, he sighed, a hint of resignation in his voice. "Very well, Mr. Potter. The Wizengamot will vote on it"
The room fell silent as the members each cast their votes. Harry's heart pounded in his chest, each moment feeling like an eternity. Finally after the votes were counted, Dumbledore raised his hand again. "The Wizengamot has decided to unseal the will of James and Lily Potter."
Relief washed over Harry as the decision was announced. Dumbledore gestured to a goblin who carried a sealed parchment to the centre of the chamber. The seal was broken and the roll was handed over to Ted. Ted glances through the will and discusses with Harry
The words of his parents filled the chamber.
"We, Lord James and Lady Lily Potter, in sound health and state of mind state thus
Ted interrupts and says "Master Goblin, the monetary bequests can be discussed in private, the reason for this public reading is to ascertain Lord and Lady Potter's wishes regarding the upbringing of their son and the regentship of House Potter and any information that might shine new light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths"
The goblin nodded and continued
"We have appointed Sirius Black as his Godfather and Alice Longbottom as his Godmother.
In the event of our deaths, we appoint his godfather, Sirius Black as his primary guardian.
We trust him with our lives and know he will raise Harry according to our wishes, and he will also have an extended family in the form of Ted and Andromeda Tonks.
In the event that Sirius is unable to take care of Harry, we appoint his godmother, Alice Longbottom to raise him.
Furthermore, we wish to state clearly that Peter Pettigrew was the Secret Keeper for the location of our home and Sirius Black at great risk agreed to be the decoy drawing the danger to himself safeguarding Peter Pettigrew. We request the DMLE to investigate the whereabouts of Pettigrew and the circumstances surrounding the leaking of the secret and ensure proper rites are carried out in the case of his unfortunate demise.
This will was witnessed by Barchoke, Potter Account Manager, Gringotts and Professor Albus Dumbledore, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot."
Gasps filled the room as the implications of the will sank in. Dumbledore's expression was carefully neutral, but a flicker of unease crossed his features. Lucius Malfoy stood up, ready to shout accusations at Dumbledore, when Ted steps forward, seeing the impending chaos, seizes the moment for his own agenda and says "This new information proves that Sirius Black was not the Secret Keeper and therefore could not have betrayed the Potters. He deserves a fair trial to clear his name."
Dumbledore's voice was measured but firm. "While this revelation is significant, we must proceed with caution. Sirius Black's actions post-incident still require scrutiny."
Harry's heart swelled with determination. "Sirius deserves a chance to explain himself. The truth has been hidden for too long."
As the hearing concluded, Harry felt a sense of closure and a renewed determination. With the support of Ted, Andromeda, and his new family, he was ready to uncover the truth and honour his parents' wishes.
Back at Potter Hall, Harry sat in the library with Andromeda and Ted. The weight of the day's events hung in the air, but there was also a sense of triumph.
"You did wonderfully, Harry," Andromeda said, her voice filled with pride. "Your parents would be so proud of you."
Ted nodded in agreement. "You've taken the first step towards justice for your family. We'll continue to fight for the truth."
Harry looked around at the faces of his new family, feeling a profound sense of gratitude. "Thank you all. I couldn't have done it without you."
Ted grinned. "We're just getting started, Harry. There's so much more to uncover"
After the successful hearing at the Wizengamot and the unsealing of his parents' will, Ted knew there were still many challenges to address, particularly the unauthorised use of Harry's name and likeness for profit. Ted Tonks took it upon himself to handle these legal matters, determined to secure Harry's financial future and ensure that justice was served.
One afternoon, Ted sat in his office, drafting a series of formal notices to various companies that had been selling merchandise using the "Boy Who Lived" moniker without permission. He carefully outlined the legal violations and demanded immediate action to rectify the situation.
"Harry," Ted called, as Harry entered the office. "I'm sending out notices to these companies. They've been profiting off your name without any authorization, and it's time we put a stop to it."
Harry nodded "I trust you, Ted. Do whatever is necessary."
Ted smiled reassuringly. "We'll get this sorted out. I promise."
With that, Ted sent out the notices, each one detailing the unauthorised use of Harry's name and demanding a cease-and-desist, along with negotiations for back pay and royalties. The responses began to trickle in over the next few days, and they all had a common thread.
In his office, Ted opened the first response, a letter from a prominent wizarding toy company. His eyes narrowed as he read the contents.
"Dear Mr. Tonks,
We have received your notice regarding the unauthorised use of the 'Boy Who Lived' name. However, we wish to inform you that we have an agreement with Albus Dumbledore, the current guardian of Harry Potter, authorising us to produce and sell these items. There was no stipulation of remuneration or royalty in said agreement.
Sincerely,
Whimsington's Wondrous Toys"
Ted's expression hardened. "Dumbledore," he muttered under his breath.
The next letter was similar, from a popular book publisher.
"Dear Mr. Tonks,
We acknowledge your notice regarding the use of Harry Potter's name. Our agreement was made with Albus Dumbledore, who authorised the use for our series of books on the Boy Who Lived. The agreement did not specify any royalty to be paid out for the use of Harry Potter's name.
Best regards,
Obscurus Books"
Reading these letters, Ted realised the extent of Dumbledore's control and influence over Harry's life, he knowingly let the companies use his name and past to control the narrative of the wizarding world and Harry's role in it. Ted would need to see the agreements Dumbledore made on Harry's behalf to be sure, but not including any monetary compensation points to either incompetence on Dumbledore's part, or the absence being intentional. And if it is intentional, Dumbledore would be limiting House Potter's wealth, reducing their ability to project their influence. 'Making them more dependent on Dumbledore' Ted thought, 'How indirect, almost Machiavellian'. He knew he had to take a firm stand. He drafted a new set of letters, this time more forceful and direct.
Several days later, Ted gathered Harry and Andromeda in the library to discuss the situation.
"Harry, Andromeda, we've received responses from the companies. They all claim they had permission from Dumbledore to use Harry's name." Ted explained, his voice steady.
Harry's eyes widened in surprise. "Can he do that?"
Ted shook his head. "No, he can't. Dumbledore was never your legal guardian with the authority to authorise such agreements. It was an illegal move on his part. I've sent a new round of notices to these companies, informing them that their agreements with Dumbledore are invalid and demanding that they cease all production and sales immediately. I've also included a threat to sue them if they don't comply."
Andromeda nodded approvingly. "Good. It's time they realised they can't exploit Harry's name for profit without proper authorization."
Ted smiled. "Exactly. I've given them a chance to negotiate a fair royalty and back pay for all the profits they've earned so far. We should be hearing back from them soon."
The following week, Ted received a series of responses from the companies, this time with a more conciliatory tone.
"Dear Mr. Tonks,
We acknowledge your latest notice and are open to discussing the current agreement and if necessary we can make amendments. Please let us know a suitable time for a meeting.
Sincerely,
Whimsington's Wondrous Toys"
Similar responses came from the other companies, all agreeing to negotiate terms for royalties and backpay.
Ted called a meeting with Harry and Andromeda to share the good news. "They've agreed to negotiate. We'll ensure that you receive fair compensation for all the profits they've made using your name."
Harry felt Ted and Andromeda were more equipped to handle this than him currently and let them know that. "Thank you, Ted. I don't understand most of this, I'm really grateful for all your help"
