Here's a peek into JC's married life. More fluffy than you usually get from yours truly.
Also note that none of these one-shots are related unless I say so.
He clocks her heading upstairs out of the corner of his eye and excuses himself from the company of his aunt and uncle for a minute.
She ducks into the bathroom and he can hear her sigh as she leans against the door.
He gives it a moment before he knocks. "Cindy?"
"Go away Neutron. I'm re-applying my makeup."
He knows her well enough to see through the lie.
"We have the same last name now, remember, Vortex?" He calls out. No response. Usually she'd hit him with some kind of barb, a remnant of their little childhood game.
The silence worries him. So he tries again. "Quit being so stubborn and let me in, will you?"
Exasperated, she finally allows him entry.
Her waterline is dotted with tears, which she quickly wipes away with the back of her hand.
The sight tugs at his heart strings.
"Hey, is everything okay?"
"I don't know why you have to make a big deal out of everything. I just wanted some air."
"We can head home, we don't have to stay—"
She shook her head. "No, no, I want you to enjoy your time with your family."
"Did someone say something to upset you?"
"No, they've all been lovely. Except your Aunt Amanda, but she's Baby Eddie's mother so that was to be expected."
"Baby Eddie isn't such a baby anymore."
Cindy shudders. "Yeah, and he's somehow even scarier."
He hops up onto the sink and sits facing her. That's when he realizes, he doesn't appreciate just how beautiful his wife is nearly as much as he should.
"What's wrong?" His voice is gentle, searching.
She crosses her arms over her chest protectively, huffing. "I just felt a little overwhelmed, okay? Your family is so...nice, for the most part, and so normal. And mine is a...mess."
"Cindy, my dad is obsessed with ducks, my cousin was a member of the League of Villains, and there are some really nutty people downstairs you haven't even met yet. I assure you, no family is actually," he puts up finger quotes, "normal."
"I know all that. But that's not what I'm talking about and you know it."
"You deserved so much better than you got." He means it too. He wishes she'd never had to deal with Sasha growing up. He wishes her father had actually been around. He wishes she hadn't seen so much.
"Don't get me wrong, Neutron. I like spending time with your relatives. They certainly have some amusing stories about your exploits." Her eyes twinkle for a minute with her signature mischief. Then, a dullness returns. "I wish I'd had that."
"Well, I wish there was something I could say or do to make it better, Cin."
She gives him a small smile. "I give you a hard time, but it means the world that you care."
"Of course I care, I love you."
She never tires of hearing it.
"C'mon, your mom promised to bring out the baby album and I definitely don't want to miss that."
He groans. "Can I be the one who stays in here now?"
She tugs on his tie, flirtatiously. "No chance, boy wonder. I could use a good laugh."
