Chapter 23: Starlight Subterfuge
Dawn stood over the sink, the cool water in her cupped hands reflecting the dim light of the bathroom.
She splashed it onto her face letting the coldness jolt her awake, trying to wash away the remnants of the nightmare that still clung to her like a second skin. Her breath was uneven, shaky, and her hands trembled as she reached for the towel.
As she dried her face, she hesitated, dreading the reflection she'd see in the mirror. Slowly, she looked up. The girl staring back at her was familiar, yet there was something new in her eyes—a flicker of determination beneath all the exhaustion and fear.
Her heart pounded in her chest, remnants of the panic still lingering in her system, but she gripped the edge of the sink to steady herself. She'd been through so much—more than anyone her age should have to endure—but she was still here. Still fighting. The reflection in the mirror had no power over her anymore. The doubts, the fear, they were just shadows in the face of the light she was determined to kindle within herself.
"You're stronger than this," she whispered, her voice faint but firm. Her grip tightened on the sink. "You have to be. For them."
She turned away from the mirror, leaving the bathroom and stepping back into the room. Chimchar, Luxio, and Staravia were all awake, their eyes on her with concern. Chimchar's arm was still in its cast, but his gaze was still full of trust and loyalty despite recent events. Dawn felt a pang of guilt, knowing that she had to ask even more of them—but also knowing that one of them would need to stay behind.
For a moment, Dawn just stood there, taking in the sight of her Pokémon. They had stood by her through everything, and now it was her turn to be strong for them.
The fear still clung to her, but it no longer had the same power. She had to push through it, for Lucas, for her friends, and for herself.
"I've been so unfair to you all," she started, her voice wavering. "I've blamed myself for so much, and I let that get in the way of taking care of you the way I should have. I'm sorry."
She looked down, swallowing hard. "You've all been by my side, no matter what. I've taken you for granted, and that's on me."
Chimchar chirped as he took a step forward, his resolve clear despite the cast on his arm. Dawn gently placed a hand on his shoulder, shaking her head. "I promise you, I'm going to do right by you from now on. I'll protect you, and I'll make sure we all get through this together. But Chimchar… you need to sit this one out."
Chimchar's eyes widened in protest, and he shook his head. "Char, Char, Chimchar!" he argued, stepping forward again as if to prove he was ready to fight.
Dawn sighed, turning away for a moment, trying to steel herself. She couldn't afford to let her emotions cloud her judgment now. But as she moved toward the door, Chimchar suddenly appeared in front of her, quicker than she expected, blocking her path.
"Chimchar," Dawn began. "I know you want to help, but…"
"Char, Chimchar!" he interrupted, pleading with her, his eyes burning with the desire to protect her.
Dawn's heart ached at his conviction, but she knew what she had to do. "Oh, alright," she finally relented, her tone softening. "Would you just grab me my Pokétch? It's on the counter."
Chimchar brightened, a smile spreading across his face as he turned to fetch the device. He carefully picked it up and started walking back toward her, but before he could hand it over, Dawn swiftly returned him to his Poké Ball.
The action was so sudden that it took both Luxio and Staravia by surprise. Dawn held the Poké Ball in her hand, her eyes softening as she spoke to it. "I'm sorry, Chimchar, but in the state you're in, I can't risk you getting hurt anymore."
She gently kissed the ball, a silent promise in the gesture, before placing it tenderly on the bed. Dawn took a step toward the door, hesitating for a moment to glance back at the Poké Ball. Her heart squeezed with the weight of her decision, but she knew it was the right one.
"C'mon," she said to Luxio and Staravia, her voice steadying as she focused on the task ahead. "Let's get a move on."
As they followed her out the door, the room fell silent, save for the faint, hopeful shake of the Poké Ball resting on the bed.
The moonlight filtered through the dense umbrella of trees in Eterna Forest, casting long shadows on the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and moss, mingling with the faint, acrid tang of smoke.
In a small clearing, Barry stood, sharply outlined by the soft moonlight. His intense gaze was fixed on his Pokémon—a bipedal creature with a fiery red and yellow body, flames flickering on its head and tail. Its puckered beak, fierce eyes, rigid red scales, and black metal shackles around its neck and ankles gave it a formidable presence.
Barry's voice cut through the stillness of the night. "Again!" he commanded, his tone harsh, leaving no room for hesitation.
The Pokémon responded immediately, its powerful legs propelling it forward. With a guttural roar, it unleashed a torrent of flame. The fire illuminated the clearing, casting a fiery glow on the surrounding trees which reflected in the boy's determined eyes.
"What was that?" Barry barked. "We're not getting any stronger if you keep phoning it in. Do it again!"
The Pokémon roared and released another burst of flames. Barry watched with unyielding scrutiny. "C'mon, put your back into it!" he shouted. "Jeez, what are you, a girl? If you don't do it right, I'm gonna fine you!"
The Pokémon obeyed, flames roaring with even more power. Barry's frustration grew as he continued to push, "Do it again! Harder! We're never gonna reach Cynthia's level if you keep slacking off!"
Even as the Pokémon began to show signs of exhaustion, Barry's demands didn't relent. "Put more into it! You call that effort?"
Suddenly, he heard a voice. "Barry."
He spun around to see Dawn who was panting and on her knees. Seeing her face, Barry's expression hardened. "What do you want, Dawn? Here to yell at me again? Or are you here to laugh at me?"
Dawn approached Barry, her gaze settling on his Pokémon. The once fiery and determined creature was now breathing heavily. Its rigid red scales glistened with sweat, and its eyes were now dull with exhaustion.
"That kind of looks like Magby," Dawn said, curiosity coloring her tone. "Did it evolve?"
Barry finally turned toward her, his features written with frustration. "Yeah, he evolved into a Magmar during the battle with the Champion… not that it helped any, of course. How'd you know I was here?"
"I heard there was a blond trainer with a Piplup going around challenging every trainer in sight to battles and building up a mean win streak," Dawn shrugged. "So, are you training now?"
"Yeah, I was, until Magmar started underperforming," Barry scowled. "He's just not cutting it, and it's getting discouraging."
Magmar's shoulders slumped, and the flames flickering atop its head and tail seemed to dim as it let out a weary sigh.
Dawn's eyes softened. "Don't take it out on him, Barry. You won't catch up to Cynthia Shirona overnight. These things take time."
"Y'know what, Dawn?" the boy sneered in a sharp, sudden tone. "You're right. These things do take time. So why don't you leave me to my training and go criticize someone else, yeah?" His words were almost spat out, as if he was trying to push her away—just like Dawn was doing earlier.
"Barry, I'm sorry for how I acted the other day," she began, her eyes sincere. "I shouldn't have yelled at you. You've always been there for me, and I let my frustrations get the better of me."
She looked at Magmar, noting his weary stance, then met Barry's gaze. "I know you're pushing yourself hard, and it's clear how much you care about getting better. But I want you to know something—I admire that about you. You're my best friend, Barry, and more than that, you're everything I aspire to be. Your determination, your drive, it's inspiring. I just wanted you to know that, and to say I'm really sorry for not supporting you the way you deserve."
The boy's face softened as Dawn apologized, a flicker of understanding in his eyes.
"But apologizing isn't the only reason I'm here," Dawn continued, her tone turning urgent. "I'm sure you've heard about a group of criminals called Team Galactic. They're right here in Eterna, and Lucas is on his way to confront them. But he can't do it alone. With the three of us—me, you, and him—we might stand a chance of stopping them."
Barry frowned, his concern evident on his face. "Are they strong?"
A grave nod confirmed her fears. "Individually, the henchmen aren't too much of a problem, at least in my experience. But the Commanders are a different story. The last time I faced one, she obliterated me. Honestly, even now, I'm not sure I'd fare much better if I faced her again. But we have to try."
Barry's eyes narrowed with determination. "I've heard about these guys. Is it true they kidnapped Professor Rowan?"
A hardened expression settled on her face. "Yes. They're not just trainers; they're ruthless. They don't follow any rules. If we lose, it's game over… there won't be any second chances. And even if we win, they would never forget it. I can't in good faith ask you to help me unless you understand this."
After a thoughtful pause, Barry's resolve solidified. "My dad wouldn't stand by while criminals ran loose," he said, his voice firm and steady. "He wouldn't back down, so neither will I."
"Thank you, Barry," a grateful smile touched Dawn's lips. "You're more than I deserve."
Back in the darkened room of the inn, the television cast a flickering bluish light, the only source of illumination in the otherwise pitch-black space.
On the screen, an old black-and-white film played out with dramatic intensity. The lone hero, dressed in a weathered trench coat, faced daunting odds with unwavering resolve. His steely gaze met the encroaching darkness, yet he did not waver.
"There's no way out, but we have to keep fighting," the hero's voice broke through the static. The TV's cold glow painted the room with an eerie luminescence, casting shadows across the room.
The only movement came from a Poké Ball on the bed, which began to shiver and shake with increasing agitation. The Poké Ball's surface quivered as if it were alive, its rhythm unsettlingly similar to a heartbeat.
The Poké Ball trembled uncontrollably, with each violent jolt, it rattled across the bed, until finally, the force of its tremors sent it tumbling off the edge. It clattered to the floor with a hollow thud, continuing to vibrate as it rolled slowly across the room.
The ball's erratic movements carried it beneath the bed where it came to rest in the shadows. Underneath, the vibrations were muffled but no less frantic, the soft, unsettling thumping now barely perceptible.
The warehouse loomed ominously, the rectangular structure was clad in corrugated metal, which had long since corroded to a mottled brown. Broken windows, some hastily boarded up with old wooden planks, revealed only darkness within.
Standing before the base, Dawn's heart began to race, memories of her previous encounter with Team Galactic in Floaroma flooding back. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
Barry, his voice low and cautious, broke the silence. "So this is really where those Team Galactic's bozos are holed up?"
"Yeah," Dawn replied, her voice trembling slightly. "At least that's what Lucas said."
Barry glanced around, noting the eerie quiet. "So, are we waiting for him first, or are we going in without him?"
Dawn hesitated, a pained expression crossing her face. "That's the thing. Last time Lucas and I spoke, I kind of—" She trailed off, unable to finish her thought.
Barry, noticing her distraction, chimed in sharply, "Dawn, if you don't stop spacing out, I'm totally gonna fine you. Finish what you were saying already."
With a deep breath, Dawn managed a smile at Barry. "I called him several times, he never picked up. If I had to guess, Lucas is probably already inside the base. But like I said, he won't be able to handle them alone."
Barry's expression brightened. "Alright then, so we just need to find him. Easy enough," he said with a confident smirk. "It's just a matter of sneaking in undetected. While we're at it, we can look for any clues about why Team Galactic is here in Eterna City."
"Yeah, that sounds smart. Good thinking, Barry," Dawn's smile widened.
Barry grinned. "You know me. Let's get this party started."
Upon entering, the warehouse interior was vast and eerie standing at a stark contrast to its weathered exterior. High above, the ceiling seemed to disappear into darkness, the bare metal beams casting long, twisted shadows across the concrete floor. The space was almost cavernous, with only the occasional flicker of moonlight seeping through the broken windows to illuminate the expanse.
Dawn and Barry moved cautiously, their footsteps muffled against the dusty floor. Their whispers cut through the oppressive silence. "Stay close," Dawn murmured, glancing around warily. "We need to be as quiet as possible."
Barry nodded, his eyes scanning the darkness. "Got it. Let's stick to the shadows and see if we can find Lucas before we run into trouble."
Suddenly, a beam of light sliced through the darkness, illuminating them both. Dawn and Barry froze, caught off guard. The light revealed an older-looking Team Galactic member, his shades reflecting the light from the flashlight.
"Darn, caught already!" Dawn exclaimed, her hand immediately flew to her Poké Balls, ready for a fight, but the man quickly raised a finger to his lips, shushing her.
He glanced around, then removed his shades and took off his blue hairpiece, revealing his true identity. Dawn's eyes widened in shock as recognition dawned.
"Greetings, Dawn. Fancy seeing you here," Looker said with a sly smirk. His tone was casual, almost playful. "I didn't expect to find you sneaking around Team Galactic's hideout."
"Looker!" Dawn exclaimed, a genuine smile spreading across her face. Her surprise and relief were quite literally tangible.
Barry, still processing the revelation, turned to Dawn with wide eyes. "Wait a sec, Dawn, don't tell me your friends with a Team Galactic crook?"
Dawn shook her head, still smiling. "No need to worry, Barry. He's not actually with Team Galactic. This is Looker, a member of the International Police."
Looker carefully repositioned his blue wig, ensuring it was perfectly aligned. His smirk widened as he looked at Barry, curiosity dancing in his eyes. "And who might this be?"
"This is my best friend, Barry. He agreed to help me sneak in here," Dawn quickly explained, taking no hesitation.
"Yo," Barry spoke nonchalantly, giving a casual hand wave.
Looker's eyes narrowed slightly as he took in Barry's confident posture. "To cover all bases, if things take a turn for the worse—how's his strength?" The question came with a hint of skepticism, doubt in his voice.
Dawn's face softened with determination as she quickly stepped in to defend her friend. "Yes, Barry's the strongest person I know. He's very—"
"I'm the son of Palmer Pearl, the Tower Tycoon. So you tell me," Barry cut her off entirely. His voice took on a confident edge, as if his lineage alone should be enough to assert his strength.
Dawn shot Barry a look before turning back to Looker. "Yeah, that too. Believe me when I say he's strong."
Weighing Dawn's words and the undeniable certainty in her expression, Looker gave a slow nod, reaching a decision, "Alright," Looker said in an assured voice. "I trust your judgment, Dawn." His eyes shifted to Barry, a hint of approval flickering across his face. "Follow me."
He led them through a maze of darkened hallways, their footsteps echoing eerily in the cavernous warehouse. They arrived at a small, cramped room with a single flickering lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. The room was cluttered with discarded equipment and boxes, giving it a messy appearance.
As they entered, Dawn's eyes were drawn to a man slumped in the corner, tied up with duct tape over his mouth. He had the signature Team Galactic blue bowl cut, was clad only in a black undershirt and boxer briefs and was clearly unconscious.
"What's that about?" Dawn's eyebrows knitted together.
Looker's lips curved into a wry smile. "Oh, that's just my little safety net. knocked him out with a dose of Sleep Gas—my own recipe. It's a real gem for situations like these. No harm done, just enough to keep him out of commission for a few hours. I even borrowed his clothes for the full undercover experience."
As Looker spoke, Dawn couldn't help but keep her gaze lingered on Looker's face in the improved lighting. She noticed the bruises and swelling that had only partially healed since their last encounter. Her thoughts flashed back to a more painful memory: Looker on his knees, battered and bloodied. The image of the muscular Team Galactic soldier delivering relentless blows, his face concealed by a mask, haunted her. Each strike had seemed to echo louder in the small room, and Dawn had been unable to tear her eyes away from Looker's pained expressions and shuddering body. The memory tightened around her heart, a silent reminder of her vulnerability.
"Dawn, Dawn, Dawn!" Barry's voice cut through her thoughts, sharp with frustration. "Would you stop spacing out and listen, seriously!?"
Shaking her head to clear the intrusive thoughts, Dawn refocused. "Uh, right. Um, oh yeah, how'd all that stuff go with Dr. Norton? Did he give you any worthwhile intel?"
"Ah, Dr. Norton, the man's a real piece of work," Looker's lips curled into a knowing smirk. "Under a bit of... encouragement, he let slip that Team Galactic's been using those Power Storage Units to keep their secret bases across Sinnoh up and running. Quite the electrical empire they've got going."
He cast a quick glance around the room before adding, "And as luck would have it, the nearest base happens to be right here in Eterna. Quite the cozy little setup they've got, don't you think?"
"So, what's the plan you've got in mind, Mr. Police guy," Barry asked, crossing his arms.
Looker leaned in, his tone turning serious but still laced with charm. "Alright, here's the plan. First, we need to locate and infiltrate that secret base here in Eterna. It's crucial to do this without drawing attention—subtlety will be our best ally."
He glanced at Dawn and Barry, gauging their reactions. "We'll start by checking the warehouse's layout. There's likely a central control room where they're managing those Power Storage Units. If we can get in there, we might find the schematics or even the key to shutting them down."
Looker's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Now, we'll need to split up. Dawn, you and Barry can scout the outer sections of the warehouse—those crates and shadows should provide decent cover. I'll handle the inside. My guess is there's a way in through one of those old vents or hidden doors. Once we've got the lay of the land, we can meet back up and figure out how to take down their operations from within."
"Makes sense," Barry agreed, nodding his head.
He gave a reassuring nod. "Just remember, keep your wits about you. If anything goes wrong, we regroup and reassess. But I have a feeling that with our combined efforts, we'll be able to hit them where it hurts."
With a final, confident smile, Looker added, "And if you're lucky, you might even get to see me in action. Just don't expect me to wear this blue wig for the grand finale."
Looker handed over a pair of sleek, black devices with a confident grin. "These are trackers. They'll let me monitor your locations in real-time. If you need me, just signal, and I'll be able to find you. They're indispensable for situations like this."
Dawn examined the trackers closely, clearly impressed. "Wow, you've really thought this whole thing through."
"Practice makes perfect," Looker said with a playful wink. "I've had my fair share of practice with these gadgets. Now, is there anything else you need to know before we dive in?"
"Actually..." Dawn hesitated for a moment before asking, "Have you seen a boy around here, about our age? His name's Lucas."
Looker shook his head, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "I haven't come across anyone by that name. Why do you ask?"
Dawn's expression shifted to one of concern. "He's another protégé of Professor Rowan. I was hoping you may have bumped into him."
Barry, noticing her distress, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Hey, like you always say, Dawn. There's no need to worry. We'll find him. Just like we'll handle everything else."
Dawn looked up at Barry, her worry easing slightly. "You're right, Barry. Thanks for that."
With a nod, Looker added, "Indeed. With that sorted, let's move on. We have a warehouse to infiltrate and a plan to execute."
The Poké Ball under the bed rattled violently, almost as if it had a mind of its own. On the TV, a cyberpunk drama unfolded, its neon-lit cityscape reflecting off the walls.
The protagonist, a lone hacker with a troubled past, navigated the dangerous underbelly of the city, his face hidden behind a visor that scanned for hidden threats. Beside him, his partner, a sleek and powerful Machamp modified with cybernetic enhancements, stood ready to take on any enemy that dared cross their path.
"Don't worry," the hacker muttered, his voice weariness hidden in his voice. "We'll get her out, no matter what it takes."
Under the bed, a flickering light began to pulse, growing brighter by the second. Slowly, the bed started to lift off the ground, trembling as it rose inch by inch. Chimchar had emerged from his Poké Ball, using his uninjured hand, Chimchar pressed upward, his muscles quivering under the immense weight.
The bed continued to rise, wobbling slightly as Chimchar struggled to keep it aloft. Despite the cast on his other arm, he refused to relent, his face set in fierce concentration. The heavy bed continued to hover above the floor, Chimchar's legs trembling as he fought to maintain control. The strain was visible, but so was his resolve.
With a final, mighty effort, he hurled the bed across the room. It slammed into the wall with a force that nearly cracked the plaster, leaving a deep dent where it hit.
"Chimchar!" the fire starter triumphantly screeched. The flame on his tail flared brightly, casting a fiery orange glow throughout the room.
Chimchar stood amidst the chaos he had created, breathing heavily but with a look of fierce pride in his eyes. His thoughts were solely on Dawn, and the worry that filled him. He didn't dwell on being left behind—his only concern was finding her.
A sudden crack of lightning illuminated the scene outside, casting a stark, electric light across the room. As the lightning's glare faded, Chimchar had already vanished, leaving only a streak of orange racing down the hallway.
Downstairs at the front desk, the inn manager was casually flipping through a magazine, his attention absorbed by the articles.
A sudden, powerful gust of wind swept through the lobby, causing the front door to jingle and swing wildly. The manager glanced up, startled, as the door continued to rock back and forth.
In the room shrouded in shadow, the only sound was the soft thunk, thunk of a knife piercing the metal table. The blade moved rhythmically between slender, pale fingers, the woman behind the knife was tall and slim. She barely paid attention to the radio crackling softly on the desk beside her as she played the pinfinger game.
Her purple eyes, half-lidded with disinterest, occasionally flicked to the flickering light of an old lamp casting an eerie glow over the room. Her purple hair was tied into tight buns, and she wore the standard Galactic uniform—white with black sleeves and kneepads—but her left thigh was partially bare. Her attention was more on the game she was playing with the knife than on the quiet, nervous voice coming through the radio speaker.
"...and we've nearly completed the installation of the Power Storage Units in Eterna, Commander," the voice on the radio droned, his words barely registering with her. The woman wasn't listening—she didn't need to.
Her mind was already several steps ahead, anticipating the next move in Team Galactic's grand plan. The knife tapped steadily on the table, its rhythm filling the room.
Suddenly, the door to the control room burst open with a loud bang, and a soldier rushed in, his face pale and panic-stricken. "Commander Jupiter!" he yelled, his voice cutting through the tense silence.
Startled, Jupiter's hand slipped, and the knife nicked her skin. She winced slightly, her eyes narrowing as she looked up, fury flickering behind her cold, purple gaze. "What!?" she snapped, her voice sharp and dangerous.
The grunt swallowed hard, visibly trembling under her furious gaze. "Several of our men—outside the western perimeter—have been found unconscious or are missing," he stammered, barely managing to get the words out.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed, without a word, she yanked the knife from the table, her blood still dripping from its edge. In a flash, she hurled it across the room with deadly precision. The blade embedded itself in the wall, slicing a thin line across the grunt's cheek as it passed.
The grunt froze, his breath caught in his throat, feeling the sting of the cut and the warm trickle of blood down his face.
"If you don't find who's responsible for this," Jupiter hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerously low tone, "I'll make sure the next blade goes straight through your skull." She took a step forward, her presence looming over him like a dark shadow. "Do you understand me?"
"Y-yes, Commander! I'll—I'll find them, I swear!" he stuttered, trying to stand firm.
Jupiter reached out, placing her hand on his cheek, her fingers cold against his skin. She wiped the blood from his face, a twisted smile curving her lips. "Good boy," she purred, her tone almost mocking. Then, with a dismissive wave, she added, "Now get out of my sight and go do your job."
The soldier nodded frantically, practically tripping over his own feet as he scrambled to leave the room.
Once the door slammed shut behind him, Jupiter stood in the silence, she glanced at the blood on her fingers, her expression turning even more sinister.
Slowly, she licked the blood from her hand, savoring the taste. "This game just became much more interesting," she murmured to herself, a cruel smile playing on her lips. "And I'm more than ready to play."
The Team Galactic soldiers patrolled the corridor of their warehouse, their footsteps echoing off the metal walls. They chatted idly, their voices a murmur against the backdrop of the facility's mechanical hum.
"Did you hear? Jupiter's not happy about the situation with the perimeter," one soldier said, adjusting his helmet.
"Yeah, I heard. I wouldn't want to be the one who has to face her wrath," another replied, glancing around warily. "I'm just hoping we get a break soon. This place is a nightmare."
Their conversation was abruptly interrupted when a small, fluffy figure emerged from the shadows. It was a Pachirisu, its large eyes sparkling with an innocent charm. The Pokémon's fluffy cheeks and tiny paws made it look harmless and adorable.
The soldiers looked at each other in confusion. "What's this? A wild Pachirisu?" one of them asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Wow," the other soldier said with a grin. "I call dibs on catching it. It'll be a great addition to the collection."
The second soldier frowned. "Hey, no fair! You already have a Magnemite. I could use an electric-type for my team. Let's settle this with rock-paper-scissors."
The two soldiers faced each other, raising their hands. "Rock, paper, scissors!" they said in unison.
Both of them revealed their choice: paper.
"Alright, let's go again," the first soldier said, his impatience showing.
They tried again. This time, both picked rock.
Frustration began to show on their faces as they prepared for another round. However, before they could continue, Pachirisu's expression changed from innocent to fierce. Its cheeks began to crackle with electricity, and a determined glare replaced its previously cute demeanor.
The soldiers' eyes widened in surprise as Pachirisu's body surged with electric energy. Without warning, Pachirisu unleashed a powerful Thunder Shock. The electrical blast surged through the corridor, striking the soldiers and sending them crashing to the ground, unconscious from the sudden and overwhelming attack.
The corridor was still, the only sounds being the faint crackle of electricity dissipating and the soft thud of the unconscious soldiers slumped on the floor. From the shadows, Lucas emerged, his expression one of approval.
"Good job, Pachirisu," he whispered softly, Pachirisu crawled up his sleeve, disappearing into the fabric as it nestled inside for a moment of rest.
Lucas glanced at the unconscious bodies of the soldiers sprawled on the floor. He dragged them out of sight behind a stack of crates, ensuring they wouldn't be easily found. The crates muffled the sound of their thuds as he maneuvered them into place.
Once he was satisfied that the soldiers were well-hidden, Lucas took a deep breath and straightened up. "Let's move," he said quietly to Pachirisu, who had reappeared on his shoulder. "We still have a mission to complete, and we can't afford any more setbacks."
As Lucas sprinted through the darkened corridors of the Team Galactic base, his mind raced with one goal: to find documents detailing Team Galactic's plans. These documents were crucial for exposing the organization's schemes to the authorities and ensuring they were stopped.
The flickering lights overhead cast erratic shadows on the walls. Lucas moved swiftly, his footsteps muffled by the thick carpeting. He rounded a corner and stopped abruptly as he heard the rapid patter of footsteps approaching from the opposite direction.
Instinctively, he dove into a nearby closet, pulling the door shut behind him. His breath came in shallow gasps as he waited, the sound of his heartbeat pounding in his ears.
Three Team Galactic soldiers raced past the closet, urgency and frustration marking their tone. "We need any of our knocked-out men and find out who's responsible for this!" one of them barked. Lucas remained perfectly still, barely daring to breathe.
After the soldiers had passed, Lucas crept out of the closet but was startled to find himself face-to-face with an older Team Galactic soldier. The man wore dark shades and wore what had to be a fake hair piece.
The soldier's eyes widened in surprise as he noticed Lucas. "Whoa, who's this?"
The soldier, actually Looker in disguise, froze momentarily as he recalled Dawn's description: "Actually… Have you seen a boy around here, about our age? His name's Lucas." His eyes widened in realization. Wait, could this be the boy she was talking about?
Lucas's gaze hardened. "Darn, Pachirisu, take him out!" he ordered, his voice resolute.
His eyes darted between Lucas and Pachirisu, trying to find a way to diffuse the situation. He raised his hands slightly in a futile gesture of surrender. "Wait, I'm not with Team Galactic! I'm under—"
But his plea was cut short. Pachirisu didn't hesitate. The small electric Pokémon's cheeks sparked with energy, and a sudden Thunder Shock erupted from him. The crackling electricity surged through the man, causing his body to jerk violently before he collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
Oblivious to the soldier's true identity, Lucas wiped a bead of sweat from his brow. "You're a life saver, Pachirisu," he murmured, extending his arm. Once again, Pachirisu scurried up Lucas's sleeve and disappeared inside.
Lucas quickly dragged the limp body into the closet. He moved efficiently, shoving Looker into the small space with the other unconscious soldiers. With a quick glance around to ensure no one had seen him, Lucas shut the closet door, securing it with a final shove.
Dawn and Barry crouched behind a stack of crates, their eyes scanning the vast expanse of the warehouse. The place was a maze of shadow and light, with crates and storage shelves creating a patchwork of cover.
As they moved cautiously, they heard the muffled voices of two Team Galactic foot soldiers nearby. Dawn signaled Barry to stop. They both pressed their backs against the cool metal of the crates, straining to listen.
"…I heard the intruder's been moving through the warehouse, taking out our men one by one," one of the soldiers said, his tone anxious. "Another platoon is out looking for this scumbag."
Dawn's eyes widened in surprise. "An intruder? But we haven't took out any of their men since we got here, they couldn't be talking about us… does that mean—"
"They have to be talking about Lucas," Barry leaned closer, his voice a whisper.
Dawn's mind raced. If Lucas had already taken out some guards, it could complicate their plan. "Alright, we need to move carefully," Barry said, pulling out a Poké Ball, ready to take action. "Let's take them out now."
"No, wait," Dawn said, placing a hand on Barry's arm. "If we create a diversion, we can slip past them without engaging. We don't want to risk getting discovered."
Barry gave her a skeptical look. "So what? If anything, they'll just think it was Lucas who did it."
Dawn hesitated, considering the potential fallout. "T-That's true, but… you've just gotta trust me here. Looker would agree with this strategy."
"Alright, fine," Barry looked at her, a determined glint forming in his eyes. "Check this out."
Barry took out a Poké Ball and released his Staravia. The Pokémon emerged in a flash of light, its sleek, dark feathers catching the faint illumination from the dim overhead lights.
As Staravia spread its wings, the graceful arch and powerful beat of its wings were mesmerizing. It took flight with a smooth, fluid motion, lifting effortlessly into the air.
Dawn watched, her breath catching in her throat. There was something utterly captivating about Staravia's flight. She tried not to, but she couldn't help but compare it to her own Staravia, who, unlike Barry's Staravia, was biologically unable to fly. The contrast struck her deeply, stirring a sense of nostalgia and wonder.
Her thoughts drifted back to their earlier battle at Oreburgh, where Barry's Staravia had proved superior to hers. Barry's voice broke through her reverie. "Staravia, make some noise and draw their attention. Create a distraction."
The Staravia responded with a series of sharp, echoing cries. It swooped and darted around the warehouse with swift and unpredictable movements. The light reflected off its feathers, casting fleeting shadows and adding to the spectacle.
As the noise intensified, the two Team Galactic soldiers were immediately drawn to the commotion. Their heads turned, eyes wide with confusion and alarm. "What's that noise?" one of them demanded anxiously. "Let's go check it out!"
With the soldiers' attention diverted, Dawn and Barry seized the opportunity. They slipped silently past the now-empty guard post. Barry kept a vigilant watch, ensuring that they remained hidden as they made their way deeper into the warehouse.
Barry's Staravia, having completed its diversionary task, returned to Barry's side, gliding smoothly through the air before landing softly next to him. It then followed them as they moved through the shadowed corridors.
Eventually, they reached a door labeled "EXIT" in bold letters. Barry took a mental note, pointing at the sign. "We need to remember this for when we make our escape," he whispered, glancing at Dawn to ensure she registered it too.
Dawn nodded, but before she could respond a voice echoed from behind them. "Well, well, well, what do we have here? Guess it wasn't just one intruder—looks like we've got two."
Both Dawn and Barry spun around, their hearts racing, to find two Team Galactic soldiers standing behind them, smug grins on their faces. One of the soldiers, eyes widening in recognition, pointed a finger directly at Dawn. "Hold on, you! I know you! You're that girl, the one from the news, and the one who nearly trashed our base in Floaroma Town. You're Dawn Platinum!"
Dawn's jaw tightened, and her eyes narrowed, a spark of determination flaring in her gaze. "Yeah, and I'm about to trash you too," she retorted sharply. Without hesitation, she enlarged a Poké Ball and tossed it into the air. "Staravia, I choose you!"
In a flash of light, Dawn's Staravia emerged, landing gracefully beside Barry's. The two Staravia stood side-by-side, wings poised and ready for battle.
Barry shot a glance at Dawn, raising an eyebrow. "So, you evolved your Staravia, huh?"
"Yeah, during my rematch with Roark," Dawn replied, the memory of that battle flickered in her mind, fueling her determination even more.
The grunts exchanged uneasy glances but quickly regained their composure. With a swift motion, they each released their Pokémon.
One grunt released a Zubat, its leathery wings beating rapidly as it took to the air, while the other sent out a Zigzagoon, which landed on all fours, growling softly as it sized up its opponents.
One of the soldiers shouted, "Zubat, use Wing Attack!" The Zubat's wings glowed with a fierce energy, and with a powerful flap, it took off like a bullet, creating a shockwave that rippled through the air as it aimed straight for Barry's Staravia.
At the same time, the other grunt commanded, "Zigzagoon, Headbutt!" The small, striped Pokémon lowered its head and charged forward, aiming for Dawn's Staravia with a burst of speed.
"Dodge it!" both Dawn and Barry yelled in unison.
Barry's Staravia, with a grace that belied its size, twisted through the air, narrowly avoiding the Zubat's attack. The force of its maneuver sent another gust of wind through the corridor, ruffling feathers and hair alike.
On the ground, Dawn's Staravia watched the aerial display with growing frustration, knowing he couldn't do anything like that. But that didn't mean he was defenseless—Dawn's Staravia quickly sidestepped the oncoming Headbutt, nimbly dodging on the ground with swift and calculated movements.
Barry smirked, his confidence evident. "Here, I'll show you a real Wing Attack!"
As the Zubat continued to chase Barry's Staravia with relentless Wing Attacks, Barry's Staravia suddenly veered downward, wings glowing as it unleashed its own Wing Attack. The sheer force of the blow created a massive shockwave, knocking the Zubat out of the air and sending it spiraling towards the ground.
Dawn's eyes widened as she saw the opening. "Staravia, now! Use Fury Attack!"
Just as the Zubat was about to crash into the floor, Dawn's Staravia leaped into action. He sprang up with surprising agility, using its powerful talons to repeatedly bash the Zubat with a series of rapid kicks, each strike landing with precision.
"Zigzagoon, Headbutt, again!" the soldier ordered, desperation creeping into his voice as he watched his Zubat get pummeled.
"Quick Attack, Staravia!" Dawn commanded. Her Staravia, still recovering from its Fury Attack, readied itself for another swift move. But just before the two Pokémon could clash, Barry's Staravia swooped down from above, its wings once again glowing with power as it smashed into the Zigzagoon with another devastating Wing Attack. The force of the collision was so intense that it created a gust of wind, sending Dawn's Staravia spiraling back into the corridor wall with a heavy thud.
Meanwhile, the Zigzagoon was launched across the room, slamming into the gut of its own trainer with enough force to knock the grunt out cold.
The remaining soldier, wide-eyed with shock, stumbled backward, unsure of what to do next. Sensing an opportunity, Dawn pointed forward. "Staravia, take him down!"
Dawn's Staravia, regaining its composure, leaped up, ready to deliver a final, decisive kick. But just as it prepared to strike, Barry's Staravia appeared in a blur of motion, closing the distance in an instant.
With a swift, precise sweep of its wings, it knocked the grunt's legs out from under him, causing him to fall headfirst to the ground, where he lay unconscious.
Dawn's Staravia froze in place, stunned by the other's speed and efficiency. Barry's Staravia turned, giving Dawn's a confident, almost challenging glare, as if to say, "This is how it's done."
Still catching his breath, Dawn's Staravia could only stare back unable to even utter a sound.
Dawn's eyes flicked to Barry, a hint of a smirk tugging at her lips. "Nicely done," she acknowledged.
Barry grinned back, his usual cocky confidence shining through. "You too."
Both trainers reached for their Poké Balls, but before recalling their Pokémon, the two Staravias exchanged a final glance. Dawn's Staravia, grounded to the floor, locked eyes with Barry's, who hovered just above the ground.
Dawn glanced back at the unconscious Team Galactic soldiers and then at Barry. "Hopefully, Team Galactic thinks it was, you know, the other intruder who did this, and not us," she said. Her thoughts drifted to Lucas, and her expression grew more determined. "We've gotta find him, before they do."
Barry's grin softened, replaced by a reassuring nod. "We will," he said firmly, leading the way.
A sharp zap echoed through the hallway, followed by the thud of a Team Galactic soldier hitting the ground.
Pachirisu crackled with static energy, growing tense as it watched the soldier fall unconscious. Lucas gave a small nod of approval, then quickly glanced around to ensure no one else was nearby.
"Good job, Pachirisu," Lucas whispered, returning his Pokémon to its Poké Ball. He then crouched down and grabbed the soldier by the arms, grunting as he dragged the body behind a large metal crate.
He had probably knocked at least a dozen Team Galactic soldiers unconscious by now, and still, he had been unseen. The thought gave him a small sense of accomplishment, but he knew he couldn't relax just yet. There was too much at stake.
Taking a deep breath, Lucas approached the door to the communication hub. Pushing it open cautiously, he slipped inside. The room was bathed in the cool glow of computer screens, with rows of terminals and data servers lining the walls. It was a cluttered space, filled with various pieces of equipment, tangled cables, and stacks of papers.
Lucas moved quickly to one of the main terminals, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. "Come on, where's that data?" he muttered.
He began sifting through the files, scrolling past lists of names, inventory logs, and coded messages. The clock was ticking, and the pressure of finding the information was getting to him. His thoughts raced—he needed something that could give them an edge, something that would turn the tide in their favor.
The terminal beeped as he finally stumbled upon something promising. "There we go," Lucas whispered, a small flicker of hope in his eyes.
He quickly began to download the data onto a small device, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds to make sure he wasn't being watched. The files began transferring, but the process was slow, the progress bar crept forward at a snail's pace.
Lucas's eyes darted around the room, his nerves on edge. The tension was suffocating, each second feeling like an eternity. "Hurry up," he urged under his breath, tapping his fingers anxiously against the desk.
Just as the download was nearing completion, a chill ran down his spine. He had the unsettling feeling that he wasn't alone anymore.
A shadow loomed in the doorway, and Lucas turned to see a tall figure stepping into the room. The moment their eyes met, he knew this was no ordinary Team Galactic grunt. The air seemed to grow colder, the tension thickening as the woman's icy gaze locked onto him. She smirked, her presence exuding authority and danger.
"You're a bold one, sneaking into our little hub. But I can assure you, your luck has just run out." She took a step closer, her gaze unwavering. "I am Jupiter, and you, my dear intruder, are in way over your head."
As Lucas turned to face the figure in the doorway, his heart pounded in his chest. She looked at him with a predatory smile, her eyes gleaming with dangerous intent. In a desperate move, he shouted, "Pachirisu, use Thunder Shock!"
Pachirisu sprang into action, its tiny body crackling with electricity. A flash of lightning illuminated the room just long enough for Jupiter to react, her hand was already reaching for a Poké Ball.
But before she could make a move, the Thunder Shock surged through the room blasting out the lights causing the space to plunge into darkness.
The sudden darkness was absolute. Jupiter's startled gasp echoed through the room, her attempts to reorient herself drowned out by the sounds of crackling electricity and frantic footsteps.
Lucas seized the moment, his hands scrambled to grab the data he had found. He knew he had no time to lose. Adrenaline surged through him as he bolted for the exit.
He could barely make out the edges of the corridor as he ran, the fear of being caught heightening his every movement. Finally, Lucas burst through the door, he didn't look back, racing down the hallway as fast as he could.
As Lucas sprinted down the corridor, his breath coming in ragged gasps, he spotted three Team Galactic soldiers blocking his path. Their eyes widened in surprise.
Before they could react, Pachirisu sprang into action. The soldiers convulsed from the electricity and fell to the ground, unconscious. Lucas barely avoided tripping over their sprawled bodies as he continued his frantic escape.
His mind raced with only one thought: An exit, an exit... He pushed himself harder, the pounding of his footsteps echoing off the walls. Behind him, a sinister sound grew louder—a low, guttural growl that sent shivers down his spine. The echo of clawed feet scraping the ground and the occasional hiss made it clear that whatever was chasing him was both fast and menacing.
Eventually, Lucas rounded a corner, the oppressive noise fading as he put more distance between himself and the source. Relief was fleeting as he collided with someone unexpectedly.
He stumbled back, panic surging through him as he raised his hand to order Pachirisu to attack. The Pokémon crackled with energy, ready to defend, but as Lucas's eyes focused on the figure in front of him, he froze.
Dawn stood there, eyes wide with surprise, and Barry was right beside her. The realization hit him hard, the boy took a deep breath, his heart still racing, and lowered his hand.
"Lucas!" Dawn's spoke, her relief to see him mingled with her guilt. As Lucas faced her, he still couldn't believe he was looking at her right now. Dawn hesitated, their last conversation weighing heavily on her mind. "You don't realize how happy I am that you're—"
"Enough talk," Lucas interrupted sharply, cutting her off. "We've got to run now. The gig is up, they've found me. C'mon!" Without waiting for a response, he sprinted down the corridor, urgency in every step. Dawn and Barry exchanged a quick, understanding glance before dashing after him.
As they ran, the distant growls and hisses faded, but the sense of danger remained.
As they sprinted through the winding corridors of the warehouse, Dawn and Barry quickly activated the sleek black devices Looker had given them. They hummed softly, tracking their locations in real-time. Barry glanced over his shoulder, urgency in his eyes. "We found the exit not too long ago. Follow me!" With that, he surged ahead, leading the way.
Dawn ran beside Lucas, her earlier words to Lucas felt like a heavy weight on her shoulders. Between breaths, she began, "Listen, this isn't the right time to say this, but I'm—"
"Why're you here?" Lucas interrupted, his gaze was intense, and Dawn couldn't find the words to explain, her guilt growing heavier with each step.
Lucas continued, the frustration in his tone clear. "I called somebody before I came here today. They should've been here by now. I hope they're not somewhere in this stupid warehouse."
"Save your breath, both of you!" Barry shouted back with a hint of annoyance. "Especially considering I know neither of you have lungs as good as mine!" He pushed himself into an even faster sprint.
Their pace was relentless, but suddenly, they skidded to a halt at a dead end. Lucas stared at Barry in disbelief. "I thought you said you knew the way!"
Barry, irritated but not winded, started to turn back. As they did, they saw Jupiter standing at the end of the corridor. Her presence was imposing, and she fixed a chilling smile on Lucas. "Looks like you've brought some friends with you," she purred, slowly advancing. "Come on, little boy, I just want to have some fun. I promise I'll be gentle."
Lucas's eyes narrowed with determination. He threw a Poké Ball, and Turtwig appeared, ready for battle. "Turtwig, use Energy Ball!" he commanded. The Pokémon's attack struck the wall ahead with a resounding explosion, creating a path through the debris.
As the three pushed through the opening, Jupiter watched them leave with a sinister smile. "That's okay," she said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "I like it when they resist."
As they dashed through the winding corridors, the trio suddenly burst into an expansive, open room near the entrance. The space was enveloped in total darkness, making it impossible to see anything beyond the immediate vicinity.
Dawn squinted into the blackness, her voice tinged with frustration and worry. "Where was the way out again?"
The trio fumbled around, trying to get their bearings in the pitch-black room. Their breathing grew more frantic as they stumbled over each other and the echoes of their steps bounced off the walls. Just as their panic reached its peak, the lights flickered on, revealing a vast, intimidating space.
The room was enormous, with high ceilings and walls lined with shelves and crates. The floor was cluttered with various equipment, giving the space an industrial, disordered feel. At the far end, near a control panel, stood Jupiter, her silhouette imposing and menacing.
Standing by the control panel, Jupiter began to clap slowly, her applause echoing with a chilling mockery. "Well, well, well," she said, her voice dripping with disdain. "Look who we have here—the three musketeers."
Her gaze lingered on Lucas and Barry before settling on Dawn. A sinister smile crept across her face as she studied the girl, her eyes narrowing with predatory satisfaction. "And you, Dawn Amber Platinum. I've seen you on TV. The girl who made a mess of Floaroma Town. How... quaint."
Dawn's heart pounded as she stared at Jupiter, her body tensing under the weight of the woman's penetrating gaze. She felt her fear rising, her breath catching in her throat.
Jupiter seemed to savor the sight of Dawn's terror, her smile widening with sinister delight. "You know, I can almost taste your fear," she said, her tone dropping to a chilling whisper. "It's like a delicate aroma, the scent of someone realizing their worst nightmare is unfolding right before them."
With a deliberate, almost languid movement, Jupiter released a Pokémon from a Poké Ball. Skuntank emerged, its purple and tan fur bristling with a menacing aura. Its massive tail arched over its back, the cream-colored stripe making it look even more intimidating. The acrid stench that followed was almost visible.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed as she regarded Dawn. "I heard from Charon what happened in Floaroma. Mars is soft, always has been. She let you go because she's weak. Me? I don't have time for that nonsense. I play with my prey, savor every moment of their desperation. I relish watching their bravado crumble, drawing out their fear until they're nothing more than trembling shadows."
Her voice dropped to a chilling whisper, filled with perverse satisfaction. "I find it delicious, the way fear can make people lose themselves, the way it twists and distorts their every thought. It's not just about crushing my enemies; it's about making them suffer, making them understand that resistance is futile."
As she spoke, Skuntank's massive tail flicked menacingly, and the air grew heavy with its pungent stench. Jupiter's cold smile never wavered, her eyes locked on Dawn as if she were already imagining the fear she would extract from her.
"Shut up!" Barry stepped forward, his expression resolute despite the fear in the room. "You don't scare me!" he declared, his voice unwavering.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed, a cold smile creeping across her face. "Oh? Isn't that charming," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "It's always the brash ones who talk the loudest. It's amusing how the loudest voices often belong to those who are the most terrified. I can see right through your bravado."
Barry's anger flared, his face reddening. "Yeah right! My name is Barry Pearl, son of Palmer Pearl, and you're going down!"
At the mention of Palmer Pearl's name, Jupiter's demeanor shifted slightly, her eyes widening in surprise. Barry threw a Poké Ball, and his Staravia burst forth, its wings flaring with a powerful display. Dawn quickly followed suit, releasing her own Staravia. Jupiter's gaze lingered on the two Pokémon, her expression momentarily nostalgic.
"I once had a Starly," she said, her voice shifting to a chillingly calm tone. "It was a fun-loving little creature, always so full of energy. But I found its strength... lacking.. So, I decided to teach it a lesson. I stripped the feathers from its wings, one by one, until it was nothing more than a shivering, exposed creature. I wanted it to feel every ounce of its weakness, to understand the true meaning of fear."
She paused, letting the gravity of her words sink in before continuing with a cold, detached inflection. "It died from infections a few days later. Those sure were the days."
Dawn's breath caught in her throat, her face pale with horror and revulsion. She looked down at her own Staravia, who stood beside her, his eyes wide with fear.
Lucas, steeling himself for the confrontation, released Chatot from its Poké Ball. The Pokémon stood tall beside the two Staravias, ready for battle. "Alright," Lucas said, determination in his voice, "if we're fighting, then so be it."
Barry's voice cut through the tension as he commanded, "Staravia, Wing Attack!" The Pokémon launched itself forward with a burst of motion, its wings beating so rapidly that it seemed to blur into a streak of darkness, its movement breaking through the air with a powerful whoosh.
Without hesitation, Dawn shouted, "Staravia, Steel Wing!" Her Staravia sprinted forward, its wings gleaming with a metallic sheen as it moved, the metal catching the light and reflecting it in sharp glints.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed with a calculating gaze. "Skuntank, dodge!" she ordered with a chilling calmness. Despite its imposing size, Skuntank's agility was remarkable. It twisted and weaved effortlessly, casually evading the incoming attacks with ease.
The two Staravias collided in mid-air, their wings clashing with a resounding thud that echoed through the warehouse. The force of the impact sent them both reeling, their bodies momentarily enveloped in a shower of feathers and sparks.
Lucas, seizing the moment, commanded, "Chatot, use Peck!" Chatot's eyes gleamed with fury as it darted toward Skuntank, its beak poised for a sharp strike. The bird Pokémon zipped through the air, its wings beating rapidly as it aimed straight for Skuntank with its beak extended.
Jupiter's voice cut through the chaos. "Skuntank, Iron Tail!"
Skuntank swung its powerful tail, its fur bristling with a metallic sheen. The tail met Chatot's peck with a resounding clash easily overpowering the Peck, sending Chatot hurtling backward. The impact was brutal; Chatot crashed into a nearby metal crate, the collision causing a loud clang that reverberated through the warehouse. The crate buckled under the force, and Chatot skidded to a stop against the wall, dazed and defeated.
The clash of attacks had left both Staravias reeling. As the Staravias staggered from the last exchange, Jupiter took the advantage. "Skuntank, Sucker Punch!"
With a flash of dark speed, Skuntank appeared between the two Staravias, its claws swinging out in a brutal one-two punch. The blows landed with precision, sending both Pokémon spiraling in opposite directions.
Dawn's Staravia crashed into a nearby shelf, causing it to topple over with a loud crash. Barry's Staravia, though heavily impacted, managed to regain its composure in mid-air and power through the pain.
Barry was quick to react. "Swift, now!"
Barry's Staravia flapped its wings rapidly, releasing a flurry of shimmering star-shaped projectiles. They sliced through the air with pinpoint accuracy, converging on Skuntank. Despite the barrage, Skuntank remained unfazed, its sturdy frame absorbing the hits with only a slight flinch of discomfort.
Dawn, not missing a beat, shouted, "Quick Attack!"
Dawn's Staravia sprang into action, disappearing in a blur of speed. It reappeared almost instantaneously in front of Skuntank, ready to land a decisive blow. But Jupiter was ready. "Slash, Skuntank!"
Skuntank extended its razor-sharp claws, gleaming menacingly in the light. Dawn's Staravia charged forward, but Skuntank's claws met it head-on with a vicious slash. The force of the attack sent Dawn's Staravia crashing to the ground, defeated and unable to continue.
"Staravia!" Dawn cried out in shock and dismay.
Skuntank then turned its attention to Barry's Staravia, a sinister grin spreading across its face. Without warning, Skuntank vanished and reappeared behind Barry's Staravia. A sudden Sucker Punch to the head forced Barry's Pokémon into the ground with a bone-jarring impact, sending debris flying in all directions. As the smoke cleared, Barry's Staravia lay unconscious, defeated.
From the haze of the battle, Lucas' Turtwig emerged from its Poké Ball. "Energy Ball, now!" Lucas commanded urgently. Turtwig gathered energy and launched a glowing sphere of pure force directly at Skuntank.
"Cute," Jupiter merely chuckled, amusement in her voice. "Skuntank, catch it!"
Without missing a beat, Skunktank's mouth opened wide, revealing a gaping maw lined with sharp teeth. The poison-type inhaled deeply, its jaws closing around the Energy Ball with a wet, audible snap.
The ball was swallowed whole, vanishing into the dark recesses of its throat. Lucas' mouth hung open in disbelief. "No way!" he exclaimed, unable to comprehend the sight. A contented burp escaped from Skunktank's mouth, followed by a puff of steam that rose from its nostrils.
Lucas clenched his fists in frustration as he watched Turtwig prepare for the attack. "Bullet Seed!" he yelled, his desperation shining through.
Turtwig's mouth opened wide, and a rapid burst of tiny, green seeds shot forth, each one propelled with explosive force. The seeds zipped through the air in a dazzling display of speed and precision.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed as she saw the attack coming. "Skunktank, block it!" she commanded sharply.
Skunktank simply raised one of its powerful claws. With a series of deft, fluid motions, it swatted the Bullet Seeds away, each seed ricocheting off its claw and scattering throughout the room, the deflected seeds pinged off walls and crates.
"Now, Iron Tail!" Jupiter shouted. Skunktank complied immediately. Its tail once again glowed with a metallic sheen as it swung with immense force. The tail connected with Turtwig's face, sending the Pokémon reeling backward.
The Iron Tail crashed down again, smashing Turtwig into the ground with a resounding thud. Turtwig lay motionless, unconscious from the relentless assault.
In response, Dawn quickly released Luxio, and Barry summoned his Magmar to join the fray. "Magmar, Flamethrower!" Barry commanded. Magmar exhaled a torrent of fiery flames towards Skunktank. However, Skunktank's demeanor was almost mocking. It snorted and laughed, dodging the attack with a swift, agile move. Before Magmar could react, Skunktank had vanished and reappeared behind it.
"Poison Jab!" Jupiter ordered. Skunktank's claw extended with a sickly green glow, and it jabbed Magmar in the throat with brutal precision. Magmar staggered, clutching its neck in pain, before collapsing onto the floor.
Suddenly, Pachirisu burst into action. With a burst of speed, it appeared behind Skunktank. "Thunder Fang!" Lucas shouted, hoping to catch Skunktank off guard. Pachirisu leapt into the air, its jaws crackling with electricity.
But Skunktank's reaction was immediate and harsh. It jabbed Pachirisu with a Poison Jab, the force so great that Pachirisu was flung backward with explosive speed. It crashed into a ceiling light, shattering it, before falling face-first onto the ground.
"Luxio, now! Fire Fang!" Dawn urged. Luxio leaped into action, its fangs enveloped in flames as it lunged toward Skunktank.
Jupiter's command was swift. "Dodge!" Skunktank sidestepped with a grace that belied its size, letting Luxio's fiery fangs snap into empty air. The flames instead engulfed Magmar, creating a brief, blinding explosion.
As the smoke from the explosion began to clear, both Luxio and Magmar were seen struggling to recover. But their respite was short-lived. Skunktank charged forward, its Iron Tail swinging with tremendous force. The tail smashed into both Pokémon, sending them crashing into the wall with a deafening impact. The wall cracked under the force, and Luxio and Magmar slumped to the ground, clearly defeated and in pain.
Dawn, Barry, and Lucas stared in stunned disbelief at their defeated Pokémon, their faces pale with shock and fear. As they recalled their Pokémon, Jupiter's smirk widened into a menacing grin. Her eyes glinted with a chilling satisfaction as she looked at the trio.
"Compared to one of our foot soldiers, your power is considerable," Jupiter's voice dripped with derision, each word carefully enunciated. "But compared to someone with even half-decent skill, like myself? You three kindergartners are weaklings."
She paused, her gaze sweeping over the trembling trio. "Any more Pokémon? Anyone?" Her voice was a chilling invitation, a predator savoring the hunt. The three of them stood frozen, paralyzed by fear, their bodies shaking uncontrollably.
Jupiter's expression softened into a look of twisted pleasure as she surveyed their terrified faces. "Oh, the fear I see on your faces," she crooned, her voice taking on a disturbingly intimate tone. "It's exhilarating. Every shiver, every panicked glance—it's like a drug. I can feel the rush, the adrenaline of watching your horror. It makes me feel truly alive."
She took a slow step forward, savoring their discomfort. "It's a rare pleasure, seeing fear so raw and unfiltered. You're like a canvas of terror, and I am the artist." Her eyes locked onto Dawn's, her smile widening. "The fear you radiate—it's delicious."
Her voice dropped to a whisper, her face mere inches from Dawn's. "And believe me, the more you try to resist, the more delicious your fear will become."
Dawn's breaths grew increasingly ragged, her chest heaving with every intake of air as her fear became tangible. Each gulp of air was faster and shallower, her eyes wide and shimmering with terror. Her trembling lips parted as if to speak, but no words came out.
The sight of her fear intensified Jupiter's cruel satisfaction. The more Dawn's panic escalated, the more the corner of Jupiter's mouth curled into a grim smile, her own excitement visibly mounting.
Just as Jupiter reveled in the terror she was instilling, the loud clatter of footsteps echoed through the room. Three Team Galactic soldiers burst into the space, their uniforms and expressions mirroring the urgency of their intrusion. "Commander Mars!" they shouted, their voices urgent.
Jupiter's head turned with a flash of interest, her eyes narrowing as she observed the new arrivals. "Ah, good," she said, her voice smooth and calculating. "Would you boys be gentlemen and detain these intruders for me?"
The three soldiers moved with precision, closing in on Dawn, Lucas, and Barry. They wrapped their arms around the trio with a firm grip, their expressions grim and determined. One of the soldiers, his voice wavering slightly, asked, "W-what are you going to do with them?"
Jupiter's gaze was cold and calculating as she answered, her voice dripping with sadistic pleasure. "Oh, I plan to play with them a little longer. I want to savor every bit of fear they have left, extract it all before I decide their fate."
Dawn, who had been struggling against the soldiers' grip, suddenly fell still. The fear that had gripped her moments ago began to transform into a resigned acceptance. Her mind raced back to the earlier confrontation, and she thought to herself, I deserve this… but not them. Her gaze flicked between Lucas and Barry, the latter drenched in sweat and trembling.
Jupiter's smile widened as she saw the shift in Dawn's demeanor. "J-Jupiter," Dawn said, her voice trembling yet resolute. Jupiter raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Look, I was told by Mars that if I crossed Team Galactic again, I wouldn't be given another chance. Well, so be it. But these two…" Dawn's voice cracked slightly as she looked at Barry, then at Lucas. "If there's any shred of humanity within you, let them go, please."
Lucas and Barry exchanged shocked glances, their faces pale with disbelief. Jupiter's smile turned crueler, her eyes narrowing as she focused on Dawn. "How very noble of you," she said, her voice low and unsettling. "You know, Mars once told me how beautiful you are. But I think you'd look even better with a few cuts and scars."
Dawn's face remained steady, having come to terms with her fate. She met Jupiter's gaze with a calm acceptance. Jupiter's laughter filled the room, echoing with a chilling amusement. "You know what?" she said, turning towards Barry.
"You, blondie," she said, pointing at him. "You're really the son of Palmer Pearl?"
Barry's confusion gave way to realization, and he nodded slowly. Jupiter's eyes sparkled with dark interest. "Strong as the boss is, even he would have trouble with such an esteemed Frontier Brain. Doing anything to you would only incur his wrath."
Dawn and Lucas were stunned by this revelation, while Barry's eyes widened with shock and his mouth hung open. "Let him go," the soldier holding Barry seemed as taken aback as the others. Jupiter's voice took on a sharper edge as she commanded, "What, did I stutter? C'mon, unhand him."
The grunt, still in shock, released Barry, who stumbled forward. Jupiter turned her gaze back to Dawn, her smile returning to its cruel curve. "If you promise to never interfere with Team Galactic's plans again and never speak a word of this to anyone, I'll let you go," she said.
"What!?" he exclaimed, his voice echoing with shock. Dawn's gaze shifted to Barry, whose face was pale, his eyes wide with fear, and his body trembling under the weight of the situation.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed, a predatory smile playing on her lips. "What will it be?" she asked, her voice low and menacing.
Dawn watched Barry closely, her heart pounding in her chest. She silently urged him, Do it… Each second felt like an eternity as Barry hesitated, his mind racing.
Slowly, Barry began to move, each step he took toward the exit door felt heavy, almost as if he were carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. His feet dragged against the ground, his mind in a fog of fear and uncertainty. He barely knew what he was doing, each movement seemed to be guided by something deeper within him, something he hadn't fully realized until now.
Finally, he reached the door, his trembling hand resting on the cold metal knob. Time seemed to stand still as he stood there, frozen in the moment. Then, in a sudden burst of clarity, Barry turned sharply on his heel, "I'm not done with you yet!" With a swift motion, he reached into his pocket and tossed a Poké Ball into the air.
"Piplup, let's do this!" he commanded. The ball opened in a flash of light, revealing Piplup, who landed on the ground with a confident cry, "Piplup, lup!" It stood firm, its eyes gleaming with courage, ready to fight by Barry's side.
Dawn and Lucas stood in stunned silence, their disbelief mirrored in their wide eyes. But Jupiter, with a smirk that promised nothing good, simply laughed—a cold, mocking sound that sent shivers down their spines.
"Skuntank," Jupiter commanded, her voice dripping with sadistic glee, "let's have some fun with this one. Don't knock it out in one blow; we want to make an example of them."
Skuntank advanced on Piplup, its claws gleaming ominously in the dim light. Barry, undeterred, steeled himself. "Piplup, Bubble Beam!" he shouted, his voice cracking with desperation.
Piplup fired a rapid stream of bubbles from its beak, each one glinting with energy as they shot toward Skuntank. But Skuntank moved with eerie speed, dodging each bubble with minimal effort, its grin never fading.
"Is that all you've got?" Jupiter taunted. "Skuntank, Slash!"
Skuntank's claws extended to an almost unnatural length, sharp and menacing. It slashed at Piplup with brutal force. Piplup tried to dodge, but Skuntank was too fast. The attack connected, sending Piplup crashing into a stack of metal crates with a thunderous clang. The impact echoed through the room as the crates crumpled beneath Piplup's small body.
"Piplup, get up!" Barry urged, his heart pounding in his chest. Piplup staggered to its feet, its gaze unwavering despite the pain.
"Drill Peck!" Barry called out, hoping to catch Skuntank off guard. Piplup launched itself into the air, spinning rapidly as it aimed its beak like a drill toward Skuntank.
But Skuntank merely sidestepped at the last second, moving with a fluid grace that belied its bulky form. Piplup shot past, barely missing its target, and skidded to a halt on the slick floor.
"Skuntank, Iron Tail!" Jupiter's voice was filled with a cruel edge.
Skuntank's tail glowed with a metallic sheen before it swung it like a whip, smashing Piplup in the side. The force of the blow sent Piplup hurtling into another set of crates, splintering wood and scattering debris across the floor. Piplup struggled to rise, its breath labored, but it refused to give up.
Jupiter chuckled darkly. "Come on, Skuntank, don't let up. Poison Jab!"
Skuntank's claws gleamed with a toxic purple hue as it lunged at Piplup. The attack was swift, driving Piplup into the ground with a sickening thud. Piplup's small body twitched with pain, its strength waning with each passing moment.
"Piplup, Hydro Pump!" Barry cried out, his voice laced with desperation.
Piplup gathered its remaining energy, firing a powerful jet of water directly at Skuntank. The water spiraled with tremendous force, aiming to push Skuntank back. But Skuntank, almost nonchalant, leapt into the air, the Hydro Pump missing entirely and crashing harmlessly into the wall.
"Hold back a little, Skuntank," Jupiter said with a twisted smile. "We don't want to break this one too quickly."
Skuntank grinned maliciously as it advanced on Piplup, dragging out the battle with a series of feints and taunts, enjoying the torment it was inflicting. Piplup was battered again and again, each blow landing with brutal precision. It was thrown against the walls, slammed into the ground, and sent crashing through more crates. The battle was a one-sided massacre.
Barry's heart ached as he watched Piplup struggle to stay conscious. He knew they were outmatched, but he couldn't let Piplup go down without one last attempt.
"Hang in there, Piplup," Barry shouted, his voice thick with emotion. "Bide!"
Piplup, now beaten and bruised, closed its eyes and began to focus, its small body glowing with an eerie blue light. Skuntank, sensing something was wrong, launched another Iron Tail, smashing Piplup into the ground once more. Piplup didn't retaliate, instead enduring the attacks as the energy within it continued to build.
Skuntank struck again, a Poison Jab this time, driving Piplup into the floor. The blue light around Piplup intensified, growing brighter and more intense with each hit. Jupiter's eyes narrowed as she realized what was happening, but it was too late.
With a final roar, Piplup released all the energy it had absorbed. The blue light erupted from Piplup in a massive energy wave, expanding outward with explosive force. The power of the attack was overwhelming, a shockwave that rattled the very walls of the room. The sheer intensity of the energy blew everyone back, even those merely watching.
Skuntank was caught in the epicenter of the blast, completely engulfed by the raw power of Piplup's Bide. The energy wave slammed into it, driving it back with a force so intense that the floor beneath it cracked and splintered. The entire room seemed to shake under the pressure of the attack.
As the blinding blue light from Piplup's Bide attack faded, the room was left in utter devastation. The energy wave had torn through the air like a thunderclap, shaking the very foundation of the room. Dust and debris settled slowly to the ground, and for a long moment, everything was still.
Dawn, Lucas, and Barry were all sprawled on the ground, trying to push themselves up as they groaned from the force of the blast. A few Team Galactic soldiers slowly staggered to their feet, disoriented and shaken. Dawn, eyes wide with realization, recalled the time Piplup had used Bide against Chimchar—how devastating it had been even then.
Piplup stood at the center of the chaos, panting heavily, its small frame trembling with exhaustion. It had given everything it had left, barely able to remain upright. Barry's eyes flickered with both pride and worry as he watched his partner struggle to stand.
"Bide," Barry explained, his voice wavering between cocky and frustrated, "stores up all the damage it takes and then sends it back twice as strong. You didn't see that coming, did you?" His tone shifted from smug to anger as he added, "You messed with the wrong Trainer."
Jupiter, momentarily caught off guard, stared at the thick smoke still hanging in the air where Skuntank had been moments before. For a fleeting second, she almost believed her Pokémon had been defeated. But then, the smoke began to clear, and a sense of dread crept into the room.
As the dust settled, the space where Skuntank had been was empty—no sign of it on the ground. The tension was tangible, everyone holding their breath as they tried to process what had happened.
Suddenly, with a blur of speed, Skuntank reappeared from the shadows, striking Piplup with a brutal Poison Jab. The force of the attack was so fierce that Piplup's body was lifted off the ground for a split second before it began to fall backward in slow motion. The room seemed to freeze as Piplup hit the ground with a soft thud, its eyes closing as it slipped into unconsciousness.
The shock was palpable on everyone's faces—Dawn's hand flew to her mouth, Lucas's eyes widened in disbelief, and even Barry's bravado shattered, his expression one of stunned horror.
Jupiter's lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Impressive, I'll admit," she said, her tone carrying a menacing edge. "Of your little group, you're definitely the strongest. But," her smile widened, darkening, "zero times ten is still zero."
Skuntank, though victorious, was far from unscathed. Its body was covered in bruises and burn marks, its once-pristine fur singed and matted from the onslaught it had endured. The normally confident Pokémon was panting heavily, it nearly stumbled on one leg, barely catching itself before it could fall.
Barry's face drained of color as he watched Piplup lying unconscious on the ground, defeated despite its best efforts. The shock of the battle's outcome hit him like a ton of bricks, and before he knew it, tears began to form in his eyes.
He tried to blink them away, swallowing hard to keep himself from breaking down. The overwhelming feeling of helplessness and failure gripped him.
Jupiter noticed his tears and her lips curled into a chilling smirk. Her voice oozed with terrifying satisfaction as she taunted, "What's wrong? Finally realizing just how out of your league you are?"
Just as the tension in the room seemed ready to snap, a sharp, defiant cry echoed from above. "Char!" Everyone's heads snapped upwards, eyes widening in disbelief.
There, perched on one of the ceiling lights, was Chimchar, his fiery tail casting a fierce glow around him. The small but fearless Pokémon stood with one foot planted firmly on the light's frame, the other slightly bent, ready to leap.
Dawn's heart nearly stopped at the sight. Her eyes filled with horror as she saw her injured Pokémon, still wearing a cast on his arm, standing so precariously above them. "Chimchar, no!" she gasped in terror.
Chimchar launched himself from the ceiling light, flipping gracefully through the air before landing on both feet in the middle of the battlefield. The impact was light, but his presence was anything but.
Dawn's entire body began to tremble. Her heart pounded in her chest, and her breath hitched as she saw her injured Pokémon perched high above. Before she could think, her legs moved on their own. She bolted forward, desperation driving her.
"Chimchar, no!" she screamed, her voice cracking with fear. But before she could reach him, a Team Galactic soldier grabbed her from behind, pulling her back. "Let me go! Let me go!" she yelled, struggling fiercely against the soldier's grip, her eyes never leaving her starter.
Lucas and Barry were both frozen in shock, their eyes wide as they watched the scene unfold. Barry's thoughts raced, panic and disbelief swirling in his mind. What does it think it's doing? he thought frantically. It couldn't even beat Piplup not too long ago—what makes it think it has any shot here!?
Dawn continued to struggle against the soldier's hold, her voice breaking as she pleaded, "Chimchar, please! You're hurt, you can't fight like this!" But her words seemed to fall on deaf ears. Chimchar's focus was razor-sharp, his eyes locked onto Skuntank with an unwavering glare.
Wiping under his nose with a confident smirk, Chimchar gave Dawn a reassuring thumbs-up. Then, with a smooth, fluid motion, he shifted into a fighting stance. With his uninjured arm extended and fingers curled into a tight fist, Chimchar kept his casted arm close. His legs were firmly positioned, one slightly ahead, ready to pivot or spring into action.
Lucas felt a chill run down his spine as he watched Chimchar. He had never seen the little Pokémon so resolute, so ready to fight. How could Chimchar be so fearless in the face of such a powerful opponent?
Chimchar darted forward with incredible speed, launching a Rock Smash that seemed to blur him out of sight. He reappeared behind Skuntank, his fist ready to strike. But Skuntank, quick to react, swung its tail, glowing with the metallic sheen of Iron Tail. The attack connected with Chimchar's face, sending him hurtling through the air.
But Chimchar wasn't out yet. In mid-air, he flipped backward, landing on his feet with a determined skid. Without missing a beat, he fired a barrage of Ember. Jupiter chuckled darkly, her confidence unwavering. "Dodge it, Skuntank!"
Skuntank nimbly avoided the Ember, its movements agile despite its fatigue. "Now, Poison Jab!" Jupiter commanded as she pointed decisively at Chimchar.
Skuntank lunged forward with its jab, but Dawn noticed that the Pokémon was slower now, its once sharp movements now more labored. As the Poison Jab approached, Chimchar executed a flawless flip, narrowly evading the attack.
Taking advantage of the opening, Chimchar struck back with a Flame Wheel, his body encased in flames as he spun towards Skuntank. The two attacks collided with a burst of fiery sparks, causing both Pokémon to stagger. Undeterred, Chimchar quickly followed up with Fury Swipes, his claws slashing rapidly and scoring several hits on Skuntank.
Skuntank reeled from the assault but retaliated with a fierce Iron Tail, its metallic tail gleaming ominously. Chimchar barely had time to react, flipping out of the way just as Skuntank's tail crashed into the ground where he had been standing.
"Good, now use Sucker Punch!" Jupiter's voice was commanding, her eyes locked on the battle.
Skuntank lunged with surprising speed, its punch aimed straight at Chimchar. The attack connected with a resounding thud, forcing Chimchar to stumble backward. Despite the pain, Chimchar managed to regain his footing, though the strain was evident.
Chimchar pressed on, his Ember attacks forcing Skuntank to dodge and weave, though the Pokémon's movements were becoming increasingly sluggish. Skuntank countered with a series of attacks: another Iron Tail, which Chimchar narrowly avoided with a desperate roll, and a Poison Jab that Chimchar dodged by leaping into the air.
The fight was fierce, with Skuntank struggling against Chimchar's relentless assault. The room was filled with the sounds of clashing attacks and the scent of smoke and ozone. Chimchar's Flame Wheel and Fury Swipes landed with powerful force, but Skuntank's defenses and counterattacks kept it in the fight.
As Skuntank's fatigue began to show, its movements became more erratic, but it was still a formidable opponent. With a final, determined effort, Skuntank prepared for one last Iron Tail, the tail glowing intensely as it swung with all its remaining strength.
Chimchar braced himself. The Iron Tail crashed into Chimchar's face with a thunderous impact. He was thrown across the room, crashing into a shelf with a devastating smash. The shelf splintered and collapsed, sending debris flying as Chimchar fell to the ground, unmoving.
The room fell silent, the dust from the shattered shelf settling over the defeated Pokémon. Skuntank stood tall, though it nearly stumbled on one leg before letting out a prideful, "Skunk!" Its voice was full of triumph, despite the toll the battle had taken.
Chimchar lay amid the wreckage of the shattered shelf, barely conscious and battered from the brutal assault, his arm twitched slightly.
Skunktank approached, raising a leg and delivering a harsh kick that sent Chimchar skidding across the battlefield. The Pokémon came to a halt, groaning in pain as he lay exposed and vulnerable.
Dawn, witnessing the agonizing scene, was in sheer panic. Her face was a mix of fear and desperation as she fought against the grip of the Team Galactic soldier restraining her. "G-get off of me!" she yelled, struggling fiercely. "I need to go to him! Let me go!"
The soldier holding her grew frustrated and snapped, "Shut up!"
But Dawn's fear turned into a frantic attempt to break free, her voice rising in a borderline panic attack. "I said shut up!" the soldier repeated, his patience exhausted. Without warning, he landed a harsh punch to Dawn's gut.
The blow left Dawn gasping for breath, her face contorted in pain. Lucas and Barry looked on, unable to intervene as the soldier's violence was inflicted on Dawn. Her body hunched forward as she coughed, struggling to regain her breath while the pain and shock overwhelmed her.
Suddenly, Chimchar's eyes snapped open. A fierce, orange glow began to envelop him, radiating a searing heat that rapidly escalated. The temperature in the room soared, causing the onlookers to step back. Steam billowed around Chimchar's body as he slowly pushed himself up from the debris, his head hanging low.
Barry wiped sweat from his brow, his eyes darting between Chimchar and the intense flames. "W-what's going on?" he gasped, his voice betraying a mix of shock and disbelief.
Lucas, too, felt the sweltering heat pressing down on him. He squinted through the rising steam, his face set in a grim, focused expression.
Dawn, still grappling with the agony, looked up at Chimchar in awe. Despite her own pain, she found herself captivated by the sheer power emanating from her Pokémon. "T-that's the same power I saw..." she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
The glow intensified, and the cast on Chimchar's arm began to tear and unravel. With a sickening crunch and a grotesque series of snaps, Chimchar's broken arm miraculously reformed, the bones shifting and realigning with a nauseating sound.
The cast disintegrated completely, revealing Chimchar's now-healed arm beneath the shimmering aura.
Chimchar's claws extended into vicious talons, and his fangs lengthened, sharpening to predatory points. His fur bristled and stood on end, giving him a menacing, almost demonic appearance. A swirling vortex of flames enveloped him, intensifying with each passing second, casting flickering shadows across the room.
Chimchar's cries of pain pierced the air as he began to scratch at the sides of his head with his newly extended claws. The sharp edges drew blood, which seeped into his fur, staining it with a dark, red hue.
With a final, ferocious roar, Chimchar unleashed a guttural, animalistic scream that filled the room with a sense of raw, untamed power. His gaze locked onto Skunktank with piercing crimson eyes, the fiery glare cutting through the smoky haze.
Skunktank, once confident, now stood in awe and fear, visibly shaken by Chimchar's terrifying transformation.
A bead of sweat trickled down Jupiter's forehead as she observed the scene unfold. Her eyes widened briefly with shock before a dark smirk curled on her lips. She snickered as she took in the sheer ferocity of Chimchar's form.
"Fascinating," she purred, a twisted smile stretching across her face. "I don't know what kind of monstrous power this is, but it's like I'm staring at a whole new Pokémon."
The soldiers, their faces etched with fear, scrambled to react. As they hastily pulled out their Poké Balls, Chimchar let out a monstrous, primal roar. The sound erupted from him like a storm unleashed, creating a shockwave of raw, searing energy that rippled through the air.
The blast was awe-inspiring—an intense, radiant wave of force that swept across the room. The soldiers were thrown back violently, their bodies crashing into the walls with bone-jarring impacts before they collapsed, unconscious, their Poké Balls tumbling from their hands.
The third soldier, eyes wide with sheer terror, couldn't escape the overwhelming force fast enough. His fear propelled him toward the exit. As he fled, the air still trembled from the aftershock of Chimchar's fury.
Jupiter's eyes narrowed as she barked, "Skunktank, Sucker Punch!"
Skunktank, its eyes narrowing in fierce determination, surged forward with a swift, powerful punch. The attack was aimed straight at Chimchar's head, moving with explosive speed. With astonishing reflexes, Chimchar's hand shot out and caught Skunktank's fist mid-air.
The entire room went silent with shock as Chimchar's grip tightened around the punch, his eyes burning with unyielding resolve. Skunktank's eyes widened in disbelief from its attack being effectively neutralized.
In one fluid motion, Chimchar twisted Skunktank's arm, bending and contorting the limb with a sickening crack. Skunktank's howl of pain echoed through the room, the sound of breaking bones clearly audible. The Pokémon staggered back, clutching its injured arm.
"Skunktank, use Iron Tail!" Jupiter's voice cut through the tension.
Still reeling from its previous injury, Skunktank shook off the pain and launched into the attack. Its tail glowed with a metallic sheen as it swung it toward Chimchar with a menacing arc. However, Chimchar's reflexes were lightning-fast. With a powerful swipe, he caught the Iron Tail in mid-air with an unyielding grip.
Chimchar's hold strengthened as he lifted Skunktank effortlessly off the ground and began to spin, his movement blurring into a cyclone. The room reverberated with the thunderous sound of Chimchar's relentless rotation, a whirlwind of fury and force.
"Char!" Chimchar roared, a guttural bellow that resonated with sheer ferocity. With a final, earth-shattering twist, he unleashed Skunktank in a blazing arc across the battlefield. The Poison-type Pokémon's shriek pierced the air as it soared, its path a fiery streak aimed directly at a sturdy metal support beam.
Skunktank crashed into the beam with bone-jarring force, the impact sending a shockwave through the area. The metal beam buckled and shattered, debris scattering everywhere as Skunktank crumpled to the ground.
Chimchar's eyes blazed with a fierce, unearthly light as he prepared his next attack. With a force that defied ordinary Ember, he unleashed a torrent of fiery embers, the flames converged in a blazing inferno that erupted with a thunderous explosion, filling the room with a blinding light and a wave of searing heat.
Dawn's jaw dropped in disbelief, her eyes wide as she watched the scene unfold. Barry's voice trembled with shock. "H-how is this possible? It was just losing two seconds ago!"
Lucas, calm but serious, responded, "You remember now, don't you, Dawn? This power—he used it before, during our battle. He briefly activated it but couldn't maintain it."
Dawn glanced at him, puzzled. "Do you know this power?" Before Lucas could elaborate, a cloud of smoke from the explosion was pierced by Skunktank's sudden, furious Slash Attack. Chimchar, undeterred, rolled into an immensely powerful Flame Wheel, far surpassing the usual intensity of the move. As he closed in on Skunktank, he leapt gracefully, evading the slash and crashing into Skunktank's head with the full force of his Flame Wheel, sending the Poison-type skidding backward.
"Skunktank, you're better than this!" Jupiter's frustration was evident as she shouted, "I don't care how fatigued you are—you're stronger than it! Don't let up!"
Driven by her command, Skunktank lunged forward, slashing with both paws in a rapid flurry. The speed was so incredible that Dawn could barely keep up with the movements. Yet Chimchar displayed acrobatic agility, evading each slash with fluid reflexes.
With a sudden burst of energy, Chimchar delivered a devastating Rock Smash to Skunktank's skull. The impact was so immense it generated a colossal shockwave that reverberated through the entire building, shaking the walls and rattling every surface.
Skunktank was hurled across the room, crashing into a metal locker with a resounding crash. Slowly, it slumped to the ground, its body twitching before it fell unconscious.
Chimchar's eyes blazed with chilling intensity, his expression morphing into a disturbing, manic smile. A crazed, unsettling laughter bubbled up from deep within him, echoing off the walls. As he walked deliberately toward the fallen Skunktank, the room fell into a stunned silence, every eye fixed on the unsettling scene.
Skunktank's eyes flickered open, fear behind its gaze as it stared up at the vengeful Chimchar. Barry, his voice trembling with a mix of horror and disbelief, shouted, "W-what's it doing!?"
Without a word, Chimchar seized Skunktank by the throat, lifting the poison-type off the ground with a terrifying strength. His gaze was fixated on his prey, his arm poised to deliver a fatal blow.
Jupiter's eyes glinted with dark excitement. "Do it," she urged, eagerly anticipating it.
Suddenly, an overwhelming surge of fear and anguish propelled Dawn into action. She bolted forward, her legs feeling like lead as she stumbled across the battlefield. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision as she reached out for her Pokémon.
With a primal scream of her own, she threw herself at Chimchar, her arms wrapping tightly around his torso. She hugged him with a fierce, almost painful grip, as if trying to anchor him to reality.
"P-please, Chimchar!" she cried out, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Don't do this! Don't use this power!" Her sobs wracked her body, each plea laced with a heart-wrenching mixture of love and fear. She buried her face in his back, her tears soaking through his fur.
Chimchar's powerful frame stiffened under her touch, his previously wild eyes now flickering with confusion. The eerie crimson light in his eyes faded as he slowly looked around. His arm, which had been poised to strike, trembled slightly.
Just as Dawn's tears began to coax Chimchar back from his monstrous state, a sinister glimmer sparked in Skunktank's eyes. With a sudden, nightmarish burst of strength, Skunktank's tail lashed out with a powerful swing.
The tail struck Chimchar with a sickening thud, sending him crashing into Dawn and knocking both of them to the ground in a tangled heap. The shock of Skunktank's unexpected resurgence left everyone momentarily paralyzed.
The poison-type's eyes were alight with a malevolent gleam, and it emitted a low, guttural growl that reverberated with a haunting intensity.
Jupiter watched with a cruel smile, her eyes glinting with cold satisfaction. "Looks like your precious Chimchar was too weak to finish the job," she taunted, her tone laced with malice. "But don't worry, I'm not so lenient. I won't give you the same mercy."
Her gaze shifted to Skunktank, a dark satisfaction in her expression. "Finish this," she commanded coldly, her voice like ice. "And make sure there's no doubt left about who's in control here."
As Skunktank's attack swung menacingly towards Dawn and Chimchar, the room seemed to hold its breath. Dawn squeezed her eyes shut, her heart racing, and Chimchar's fierce gaze was softened into grim acceptance. Just as Skunktank's Poison Jab was about to strike, a sudden blur of motion interrupted the scene.
A large rock shot through the air with astonishing speed, slamming directly into Skunktank's face. The impact shattered the rock into a shower of debris, and Skunktank's pained screech filled the room. The Skunk Pokémon stumbled backward, its attack halted in mid-motion.
Everyone's eyes snapped to the end of the room in stunned silence. Standing there was a bulky, bipedal Pokémon with a commanding presence. Its brown fur was marked by a tan bib-like pattern, and it had a tan mask with rounded extensions over its eyes. The Pokémon's large, flat tail and prominent upper incisors added to its imposing appearance.
Lucas, eyes wide with disbelief, exclaimed, "A—a Bibarel? He's finally here!"
As the dust settled, Professor Rowan stepped out from behind the Bibarel, his presence as formidable as the Pokémon beside him. His voice carried authority and concern. "What kind of man would I be if I abandoned those in need? My duty is to protect and assist, no matter the cost."
Barry's eyes widened in disbelief. "W-what are you doing here!?"
Professor Rowan's gaze locked onto Jupiter with a steely resolve. "Lucas informed me what was going on. I took the quickest cab from Jubilife I could. I couldn't just sit by while my protégés were in danger. I have a responsibility to you three!"
"Well, well, if it isn't the fool who's been captured by Team Galactic in the past," Jupiter's lips curled into a smirk. "I didn't expect you to be so eager to face us again. Still clinging to your glory days, are you, old man?"
Professor Rowan's face darkened. "I'm only 50!" he snapped, the irritation evident in his voice. "And I'm not about to let you mock me or my students."
As tension crackled in the air, another figure burst into the scene, running past Jupiter. Looker, his wig and shades off, looked disheveled and out of breath. "W-we need to leave, now!" he yelled urgently.
He quickly helped Dawn to her feet. "Come on, we have to go!"
Dawn, holding Chimchar in her arms, glanced back at Professor Rowan with a mixture of relief and gratitude. "You're amazing, Professor. Good luck!"
Lucas, still unsure of Looker's identity but trusting the situation, followed along with Barry and Dawn. As they moved to escape, the room was left to the confrontation between Professor Rowan and Jupiter.
The full moon casted a silvery glow over the landscape. Stars twinkled like scattered diamonds, their light shimmering gently against the backdrop of darkness.
Dawn sat quietly on a stone stair step, her weary gaze fixed on the moonlit horizon. Chimchar rested beside her, his breathing slow and steady as he regained his strength.
Nearby, the sounds of police radios and murmured conversations filled the air. Officers were gathered around Professor Rowan, who was explaining the situation with a sense of urgency and authority.
Lucas continued to quiz Looker, curiosity and frustration mingling in his voice. "So, you were pretending to be Team Galactic to—what, fool them into thinking you were one of them?"
Looker replied with a smirk, "Well, it's a classic move: you know, hide in plain sight and all that. It's not every day you get zapped by someone who's supposed to be on your side."
"Yeah, well, you could have picked a less shocking disguise," Lucas's eyes narrowed.
Looker's grin widened. "Hey, I thought it'd make for an electrifying entrance. Guess I got a bit too into character."
An hour had passed since their narrow escape from Jupiter, and the police were now thoroughly investigating Team Galactic's activities in Eterna. Barry stood beside Dawn, his face serious as he reflected on the recent battle.
"That power Chimchar used earlier," Barry began, his tone reverent, "it was… really something."
Dawn's gaze fell to Chimchar, who was resting nearby, still showing signs of fatigue. "That it was," she agreed quietly.
Lucas, who had overheard their conversation, stepped closer. "What you saw was Blaze," he said, his voice carrying a hint of awe. "Blaze is a rare ability among fire-types. It activates when the Pokémon is pushed to its limits, intensifying its fire attacks. It usually kicks in when they're about to be knocked out, but Chimchar used it when you were in danger, which is unusual."
Dawn's eyes widened slightly as she absorbed the information. "Blaze…" she repeated, her voice trailing off as she processed it.
Lucas walked forward, his expression thoughtful. "That's what I suspect it is—Blaze. But it was strange. It didn't just boost Chimchar's fire attacks; his strength and speed increased dramatically. Plus, his arm, which had shattered against the Champion's Garchomp, healed almost instantly once the ability activated. I've never seen Blaze exhibit such regenerative effects before. It's not supposed to provide that kind of healing."
"Still," Dawn responded, her voice filled with concern, "It doesn't matter what it is. I saw it myself—when the ability activated, Chimchar was in pain. And he nearly... that Skunktank was bad, sure, but it was only because its master Jupiter was so cruel. Chimchar took a sick pleasure in beating it to a pulp."
"Yeah..." Lucas replied, his body shivering at the thought of Jupiter. "It's a shame she managed to slip away, but at least we're all alive." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a flash drive. It was badly damaged—cracked and partially melted, with a few wires protruding from its casing.
Barry's eyes narrowed, his fists clenched tightly as he brooded over the events that had unfolded. He almost accepted Jupiter's offer to leave; that and the sting of the Champion's words about his weakness fueled a simmering anger within him.
He cast a glare at Dawn and Chimchar, feeling a surge of frustration at how much power they had displayed. The thought of the Champion's scorn, combined with how weak he felt against Jupiter, made him wonder just how far Dawn had come.
Before he could dwell further on his thoughts, Looker strolled up with his usual flair. "Well, off I go! Time to hunt down more clues about our not-so-friendly neighborhood Galactic team. Don't wait up—unless you've got a lead on where I left my wig and shades!" With a wink and a smirk, he trotted off into the night.
"Well, I suppose I'm off too," Barry huffed, crossing his arms and turning away. "I Still need to get much stronger." He cast a final look over his shoulder at Dawn, conviction in his voice. "Next time we meet, it'll be on the battlefield."
"Right, on the battlefield!" Dawn agreed, understanding she would need to become stronger. "I'll see you then Barry, stay safe!"
With that, he walked off, leaving Dawn and Lucas standing together. The silence that followed was palpable, and Dawn shifted uncomfortably as she tried to find the right words. Finally, she spoke up, her voice a mix of apprehension and sincerity. "Lucas, listen, um, about earlier today, I just wanted to say—"
"It's okay, Dawn. That wasn't you," Lucas cut her off with a gentle but firm tone.
Dawn took a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly as she continued, "No, it was. And you know what? I'll live with that." She looked down for a moment, gathering her thoughts before meeting Lucas's gaze again. "Look, I'm just… I'm stupid, selfish, insecure, but most of all, I'm scared and angry, and I took that out on you. I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that."
Lucas was momentarily at a loss for words, his mind racing as he tried to process the sincerity in Dawn's voice. "I don't want your apology, Dawn," He fumbled for a response.
Dawn's shoulders relaxed slightly, a flicker of relief crossing her face, though her expression remained earnest. "I see. Then will you accept my thanks?"
"Thanks?" Lucas tilted his head, puzzled.
Dawn nodded, her eyes meeting his with unwavering resolve. "I never really had the chance to thank you properly with everything that's been happening. The truth is, I managed to defeat Gardenia, and it was all thanks to you and your guidance." She stood up, her posture firm and her gaze steady. "So, thank you, Lucas. Really."
Finally, Lucas offered a small, appreciative smile, the corners of his mouth lifting in a rare show of emotion. "You're welcome," he said, his voice softer and more heartfelt than usual.
Professor Rowan appeared behind them, resting a hand on each of their shoulders. "You both did incredibly well tonight. Despite the challenges and fears you faced, you showed remarkable courage. Remember, it's not just about being strong but also about how you use that strength to support and protect others."
Lucas looked down, guilt still evident. "I'm sorry, Professor Rowan. I chose to become a Pokémon Trainer to be strong enough to protect those I care about, but despite that, I still had to rely on you."
Professor Rowan gave him a reassuring smile. "Strength isn't just about physical power or victory in battle. It's about your heart, your resolve, and your willingness to stand up, even when things are tough. You've already shown you have what it takes. It's through these moments of doubt that true strength is forged. Keep believing in yourself, Lucas. You're doing just fine."
Lucas's expression softened as he listened to Professor Rowan's words. A glimmer of hope sparked in his eyes. "Right," he said, his resolve strengthened.
Professor Rowan turned to Dawn with a warm smile. "And you, Dawn? What are your plans now?"
Dawn took a deep breath, her gaze resolute. "Well, first things first, I'm going back to the Pokémon Center. After that, I'm getting the heck out of this town and heading to Hearthome City." She glanced at Lucas. "I'm continuing my gym challenge. I need to get much stronger, especially if I'm going to face Team Galactic again. Challenging gyms is the best way to do that."
"So, you still want to take on Galactic?" Lucas raised an eyebrow, surprised.
"Do you remember what you asked me earlier, why I came? It's because... you called me a hero." Dawn paused, letting her words sink in. "And that's exactly what I'm going to be. I'm not running from this. I'm going to fight for what's right. I'm done running."
Professor Rowan nodded approvingly. "That's the spirit. Strength and resolve are the true marks of a hero. Keep moving forward, and don't let anything deter you from your path."
With renewed determination, Dawn picked up Chimchar from the ground. The Pokémon's eyes met hers with unwavering loyalty. As she began to walk away, Lucas and Professor Rowan watched her go, their respect and admiration evident.
As Dawn walked further into the night, the cool air did little to soothe her mounting anxiety. She glanced back one last time looking at the silhouettes of Lucas and Professor Rowan until they were no longer visible. Then, with a heavy heart, she returned Chimchar to his Poké Ball.
She staggered a few steps, her breath coming in quick, shallow bursts. The whispering doubts returned with a vengeance, swirling in her mind and amplifying the tension she felt.
Dawn's chest tightened, each breath becoming more labored and uneven. Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she clutched at her sides, trying to ground herself. The streetlights cast long, jittery shadows on the pavement, which seemed to dance menacingly around her.
Her vision began to blur, her thoughts racing faster than she could keep up with. She felt dizzy, the world around her spinning out of control. Panic surged through her like a tidal wave, and she sank to her knees, struggling to steady her breathing.
Her heart pounded in her chest like a relentless drumbeat. The overwhelming fear and self-doubt pressed down on her, threatening to crush her. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling down her cheeks as she fought to regain control.
Then, amidst the encroaching darkness and her escalating panic, something caught her eye. Above her, the sky began to shimmer with an unexpected and gentle radiance. A soft, ethereal glow emerged, casting a delicate pink hue across the heavens. It was as if the sky itself had been touched by a magical hand, transforming into a breathtaking canvas of pastel colors.
The light drifted slowly across the sky with a tranquil, celestial beauty. Dawn's gaze was drawn upward, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the familiar yet otherworldly sight.
For a moment, everything else fell away—the cacophony of her racing thoughts, the crushing weight of her fears. It was as if the universe had momentarily paused, offering her a moment of peace and clarity.
Dawn's racing heartbeat began to slow, her breaths coming in steadier, deeper intervals. She stood still, her eyes fixed on the sky, allowing the serenity of the sight to wash over her.
In that moment, the worries and fears that had been consuming her seemed to recede, replaced by a quiet, calming wonder.
As the glow gradually faded from view, Dawn felt a renewed sense of strength and clarity. With a deep breath, she steadied herself, ready to continue her journey with a newfound resolve.
Sorry guys, this chapter was long, I didn't want to have another chapter in Eterna considering we've been here since chapter 17, so, yeah, I crammed all this into one big super chapter. But fret not, the next few chapters will be much shorter.
Yeah, I'll admit, I had a lot of fun writing Jupiter's character though, Mars, bad as she was, at least had some redeeming qualities. Jupiter on the other hand, well, you guys read the chapter.
Okay, that's all from me, drop a review and tell me what you thought.
