Flameout Chapter 29
Sunday
The FBI
Jane and Maura walked into the precinct the next morning hand in hand, that put a huge smile on Gen's face. She knew they would work things out, they loved each other too much not to. When they approached her, Gen grabbed them for a brief chat in her office. While Gen was talking with Jane and Maura, the FBI's Boston field office was busy tracing leads. They had grabbed the prison angle from Frost and were investigating all of the guards that came into contact with Stella.
Agent Darren Rice, the lead Agent for the FBI Boston Field Office, told his staff, "Look we have several different angles that we can follow in this investigation. I would like a team of six to work on the prison angle. I believe there is some merit to that track of this investigation. We need to really look into this Stella person and the prison guards that are assigned to her. So, Agent Smith, grab five agents and get started on that, please."
"No problem, we will get working on that." Agent Kevin Smith said as he called five agent's name and went to the conference room next door and got started on their track of the investigation, Stella and the prison.
Agent Smith read over what information they were given. Agent Smith appreciated the fact that the Boston PD had told them about Stella and how they had no evidence to know that it was Stella behind all of this. The FBI had the manpower to work multiple leads at the same time. Agent Rice felt that there was some merit to Stella being behind this elaborate plan and that is why he assign six agents to that track of the investigation.
Agent Smith and his team had researched Stella and found out her true identity. The team discovered that Stella was a flawed individual with a brilliant mind. She had escaped from a mental institution and was using her alias of Stella to live out in the real world undetected. That was until she decided to mess with Jane Rizzoli and Doctor Maura Isles.
The team had discovered Stella's true identity because they placed FBI agent, Javier Garcia, undercover as Stella's primary guard. Javier was wired and the FBI could hear everything that Stella said. Javier just had to be within fifteen feet of Stella for the mic to pick up her conversation. What the FBI hadn't planned on was Javier crossing his arms at some point and the movement causing a shift of the mic. The shift caused half of the mic to be obstructed by Javier's undershirt. They were only able to hear half of the conversation.
After placing the cuffs on Stella's hands and feet, Javier released Stella from her cell and took her outside. Stella looked at the new guard and asked, "Who are you and where is Troy?"
"I am Javier and Troy has been assigned to a different post at another prison. He had put in his request quite some time ago and the prison system being as slow as they are just got around to approving his transfer." Stella seemed to believe this information which pleased Javier.
"Bummer, I really liked Troy. I enjoyed talking with him. Actually, he was pretty much the only person I got to talk to." Stella informed her new guard.
"Now Stella, I know that isn't true. I had a chance to talk with Troy before he left and because he has known me for so long and felt as though he could trust me, he told me to give you this." Javier handed Stella her cell phone. Stella smiled as she took the phone from Javier.
Stella read her messages and made a few phone calls as they walked around the perimeter. Because Stella touched the phone, Javier was able to dust the phone for prints after he returned to the FBI Boston field office. He ran the prints through the system. That is how the team found out that Stella was really Regina Von Helsing. Regina's family manufactured medical testing equipment. Regina had been the head of research and development specializing in forensic science.
Regina had studied medicine overseas and specialized in forensic science. She had received her doctorate degree and graduated at the top of her class. While working as an assistant medical examiner she had a psychotic break and was institutionalized. Her last known address was the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida. She was a resident there being treated for dissociative identity disorder, previously referred to as multiple personality disorder.
From watching the video recording of her psychotic break, the doctors discovered that she had at least five different personalities. They set up a treatment program and she was recovering.
Regina's mother, Casandra, began to walk into Regina's office where she was sitting writing a report on the tests she had just completed. Casandra knocked on the door to get her daughter's attention. Without giving Regina a chance to say anything she asked, "Regina, do you have a date for the gala on Saturday?" Regina was tired of her mother bugging her about having dates for these galas that she made her go to. It seemed to be the first question she asked every time she saw her daughter and Regina had enough.
"Mother, I do not have a date and do not want to have a date." Regina snapped at her mother.
Regina stood up and all of a sudden told her mother in a man's voice, "Casandra, Regina doesn't need a date. She has me, I am great for her so why would she need anyone else."
Casandra looked at her daughter and replied, "Who the hell are you?" playing along thinking that her daughter was just trying to throw her off her line of questioning.
He raised his voice in response, "Don't yell at me. I am Dr. Grayson Ellison, Regina's boyfriend."
"Really, I didn't know she had a boyfriend." Casandra was getting irritated, this wasn't a game and she didn't appreciate her daughter acting up like this. She wanted her daughter to stop this foolishness and just answer her questions.
"Why would you? She doesn't have to answer to you, sweetie. She is an adult and doesn't need you to continue mothering her. She is quite capable of taking care of herself." Yet another personality of Regina's, a mature woman's voice responded to Casandra.
"I am her mother and I will continue to mother my daughter as I see fit." Casandra insisted.
There was a brief pause and then a young girl's voice said, "Mommy, I don't want to date anyone, I am too young and boys are yucky, why would I ever want to date a boy."
"Who are you?" Casandra was confused as to what her daughter was doing. Why was she changing her voice so much. This young girl sounded like Regina when she was about eight years old.
"Mommy, I am your daughter, Regina, don't you recognize my voice?" Regina was almost in tears believing that her mother didn't know who she was.
Casandra consoled her daughter and then realized what was happening and excused herself from her daughter's office. "I will be right back sweetheart." She immediately called her doctor. Regina was removed from her place of employment and taken to the local hospital. She was placed on the psych ward and after a brief conversation with a doctor Regina was placed into a program for individuals with multiple personalities, at Florida State Hospital. She would be evaluated a plan of action would be developed for her.
Regina was in the final stages of her treatment program and the doctors believed that after a few more months of treatment she would be able to relocate to a halfway house and after a short time there be on her own again.
Regina disappeared after a hurricane moved through the area and she had not been seen since. Regina's money from her trust fund had been removed from her account and the police and bank officials were not able to track the millions of dollars that she had in her account. They were able to verify that the money had been removed over a period of time and not all at once.
The pieces were falling into place now for Agent Smith and his team. With access to Regina's money and the network of people that Regina knew, Stella was able to devise such an elaborate plan. It also brought up another problem. If Regina's family manufactured the medical testing equipment and she was in charge of the research and development of such equipment, then she would know how to manipulate the equipment to give off whatever results she wanted. Agent Smith informed Agent Rice of the team's findings. With all of this information they started putting names to some of the different activities and were able to figure out key pieces of Stella/Regina's plan.
Agent Rice assigned additional agents to work with Agent Smith as they put the pieces of Regina's plan together. There were so many people involved. Jane was happy that the FBI was allowing BPD to assist with the interrogation of the individuals involved. Regina had so many people assisting her. As they discovered each individual that led to other individuals. Agent Rice basically had one agent or detective researching each individual that Regina had contacted to assist her. He would soon run out of agents and detectives.
Agent Garcia continued to be Regina's guard and he didn't let her know that he was on to her. He kept listening to her conversations and gathering information. He didn't know how long he would have to pose as her guard but he would happily continue the charade until the team figured out all the details of her plan and made all the arrests. He worked four hours a day at the prison and assisted Jane when he wasn't at the prison or the Boston field office.
Jane made sure that Frost set up a 24/7 video connection between BPD and the FBI. This video feed was aimed at the murder board in the FBI field office. It was hard to see sometimes but Jane used her smart phone and took a picture of the board and then blew it up so she could view it. Over the years Jane had learned how to cast her photos or videos up on the big screen in BRIC, so that is how she was able to look at the information. Frost and one of the techs at the FBI had a computerized version of the murder board but the actual board was the most up-to-date version as the agents updated it and then provided the information to the techs to update the information on the computer.
Although there was no murder involved in the case, they still referred to the board that held all of the case information as the 'murder board.' It was more out of habit then anything else.
Gen was fascinated by all the moving parts and to think that this all started because Jane had a 'gut' feeling about some of Maura's new hires. Gen thought to herself if Jane wasn't in protective mode over Maura this might have gone unnoticed until much later. She hated to think that Jane and/or Maura and the children might have been harmed if Jane hadn't spoken up. Gen was very thankful that they caught onto Regina's plan while it was still in the early stages. She also found it hard to believe that Regina would put so much work into trying to win Jane's affections. I mean she loved Jane but this was a great deal of work for someone to do for someone that she had just met at a bar one night and had a few drinks with. Jane had let her know that she was not interested in her but Regina didn't accept that and hatched this plan to get to Jane.
Maura was concerned about the fact that Regina might have altered the settings of the forensic equipment that they used to assist the detectives in solving their cases. She asked for a team of agents and/or detectives to work with her to discover if any of the equipment that they were using was altered. For several key cases she would have to have the tests ran again on a machine that was not from Regina's company. Maura wanted to ensure that Regina did not damage the reputation of her lab.
The agents and/or detectives that worked with Maura had to understand forensic science and how the machines worked so there were only a few agents that could assist her. None of the detectives at BPD were knowledgeable in the equipment that her lab used so she had to rely on the agents for help. She also had her trusted employees that could assist the agents. Susie was a huge help to Maura and the agents.
Jane and Maura made sure that they were home each night to have dinner with the children. Gen had insisted that the teams be set up so that no one person was working more than twelve hours in the day. The FBI and BPD set up the work schedule and stuck to it. The team worked 24/7 and Gen and Agent Rice wanted to make sure that the team was available for as long as it took to solve this case. If they overworked themselves, they wouldn't be as sharp and mistakes might happen. If mistakes were made, harm could still come to Jane and/or Maura and the children.
Angela and Skye worked out a schedule to make sure that Charlie and Bella were taken care of each day. The children were happy that Jane and Maura were able to have dinner with them and tuck them into bed each evening. After the children went to bed each night, Jane and Maura chatted with Frost and Gen over the phone to recap what they had learned and what they thought might happen.
It had taken a week before arrests were made and the case was blown wide open. Javier continued undercover as Regina's guard. His cover was still intact and the FBI wanted it that way. Because Regina was cut off from the outside world, she didn't know that the FBI had discovered her plan. Javier had to go through the messages that she received. The cell phone suddenly had issues making outside calls and sending text messages.
Regina had asked him, "Javier, what the hell is going on? I can't make any calls or send any text messages." She was clearly frustrated. "Can I use your cell phone?" He had anticipated this and the FBI had set up a phone for him to use for this purpose.
"Sure, here you go," Javier said as he handed her his cell phone. Of course, outside calls and text messages were not working on his phone either. He told her some story about cell blockers and the government cutting down on the possibility of inmates having cell phones. It was a big issue now in prisons and in certain prisons judges had authorized the use of cell phone blockers. She was not happy about this. Her whole plan revolved around her being able to have communication with her contacts. The plan was in motion but she wanted to keep track of her plan and the cell phone was her only means of communication.
It took Maura's team three complete days to inspect each and every machine in her lab. Two of the older machines had been tampered with. Maura knew what tests were run on those machines. She and Susie looked through every case that required those tests to be run since she became the Chief Medical Examiner. They immediately reran the tests where possible and looked for other ways to verify their findings for the tests where evidence was no longer available to process. They did not want to have to allow criminals to go free because of a technicality revolving around the test results.
BPD was fortunate, Maura and Susie were able to ensure that all of the cases that had required tests from the two altered machines were able to be validated. The cases did have to go through a judicial panel to ensure the accuracy of Maura's findings. She and Susie attached all of their documentation to the case file and sent the cases before the judicial panel. This was an extremely rare circumstance and the court appointed members of the judicial panel were very cooperative. They wanted to make sure that each of the convicted individuals were not falsely imprisoned because of the test results.
Jane and Frost carefully reviewed each of the accused individual's files to make sure that all of the 'T's were crossed and the 'I's were dotted. They didn't want any individual to get away with anything. They kept a running list of all the charges that they could add to Regina Von Helsing's case. The list was long and Jane enjoyed every time they were able to add a new charge. Regina would never get out of jail. Her criminal empire was crumbling and she didn't even know it.
Two weeks had passed since the FBI had joined the case. They now had over 70 people of interest in the case. Jane and Maura had just gotten home from work and were greeting the children when the doorbell rang. Jane and Maura looked at each other and Jane asked, "Are we expecting anyone?" Maura shook her head to let Jane know that she was not expecting anyone. Jane gave Maura a quick kiss on the cheek and said, "I will get it." She walked over to the door and opened it. Jane stood there smiling. She stepped out and hugged her cousin, Arianna. "Ari, what are you doing here? I didn't know you were coming."
Arianna looked to make sure Maura wasn't in earshot and whispered to Jane, "I brought the little box. I didn't trust the mail system with it, plus I enjoy seeing you and I want to get to know Maura and the children."
"Please come in." Jane said as she pulled her cousin inside. She had a huge smile on her face. She loved seeing her cousin and she was surprised that Ari had planned a visit without telling her.
As they started to walk in, Maura walked over. "Arianna, what a surprise. Did Jane forget to tell me that you were coming?" Maura looked to Jane and Jane shook her head letting her know that she didn't forget to tell her.
Ari quickly replied, "No, no, she didn't know I was coming. I miss my cousin and I just wanted to come and spend some time here in Boston. I know you might be busy and if you don't have room for me here, I can go get a hotel room."
"Of course, we have room. This place is huge." Jane motioned with her hands to the expanse of the mini mansion that she now lived in with Maura and the children. Jane had told Arianna about how big the house that Maura grew up in was. They walked into the living room where the children were and Jane introduced Arianna to the children. "Charlie and Bella, this is my cousin Arianna. She lives in Italy."
"Mama, she looks just like you." Charlie said as he looked at Arianna and then Jane.
"Yes, growing up everyone thought that we were twins." The five of them talked for a while and then as bed time approached for the children, they all went upstairs. Jane showed Arianna to the guest room while Maura assisted the children.
After a bedtime story, read by Jane using all of the voices required for the story, they tucked the children into their beds. The adults went downstairs and Maura opened a bottle of wine and brought the bottle and three wine glasses to the living room where Jane and Arianna were sitting. It was Thursday night and Jane and Maura had to work in the morning. They had the weekend off. Arianna asked Jane, "Can I have the keys to the mustang?"
"Why do you want my mustang keys?" Jane was suspicious of her cousin.
"I want to go to your apartment and have some fun with staff as I pretend to be you like we use to do." The three ladies smiled at each other and Jane got up to get the keys. Jane would love to see the look on the concierge's face when Ari shows up pretending to be her in the middle of the day.
"Ari, please do not walk in there with another woman on your arm." Maura had a stunned look on her face when Jane said that.
"You wouldn't do that, would you?" Maura asked Arianna.
"No, no, I would never do anything like that. I do need your leather jacket though Jane. I didn't bring my black leather jacket, just this light brown one. You really should give up your apartment, why pay for that when you live in this fabulous place with your woman."
"Ari, Maura loves the apartment also. We have talked about it and we will continue to talk about it until we make a decision."
Maura looked at her watch, "Jane, we need to get some sleep, we have work in the morning and we told Gen that we would be in at 6 AM."
"Oh crap, that is right. Remind me again why we agreed to that?"
"Because we wanted to be off of work when the children get out of school."
"That's right, sorry Ari, we need to call it an evening. You know where the guest room is. Feel free to go to the media room down the hall and keep yourself occupied. Skye will be here in the morning to get the children off to school." With that said, Jane and Maura went up to their bedroom. Ari found the media room and decided to sit and catch up on some of her television shows. At about 1 AM, Ari went to the guest room and fell asleep.
Jane and Maura left at 5:30 AM after greeting Skye. Skye had sat on the sofa and began reading a book that she had brought over and by 6 AM she was fast asleep. Skye knew that she had set her alarm for 7 AM so she could get the children up and ready for school.
When Skye woke up at 7 AM she smelled fresh coffee. She walked into the kitchen and was surprised to see 'Jane' there. "Jane, I thought you went to work earlier."
"Oh, hey, you must be Skye. I am Jane's cousin, Arianna. Ari for short. Jane must have forgot to tell you that I arrived last night. I kinda surprised them, so I am not surprised that Jane forgot to mention me."
Skye was relieved, she thought it was strange that Jane would be home after such a short time when they were still working on their big case. "I am, I was just going to go wake the children up and then start breakfast."
"I can wake the children if you want me to. That way you can go ahead and start breakfast. Can I go with you when you take them to school?"
"Sure, on all accounts. Thank you!" Ari bounced upstairs to wake the children, it reminded her of when her children, Nicky and Giana were little.
When Ari attempted to wake Bella, Bella looked at her and said, "Mama, I don't want to go to school today. I want to visit with your cousin, Arianna."
"Sweetie, I am Arianna, you mothers went to work already." At that Bella bounced up and just stared at Arianna. "It's okay, sweetie, Skye is downstairs making breakfast and I volunteered to wake you and your brother up." Bella then hugged Arianna and climbed out of bed. She took Arianna's hand as they went to Charlie's room to wake him up. Charlie also thought it was Jane waking him up. Ari thought to herself, 'these two will get use to me and how sweet is it that they already call Jane mama.'
The four of them ate breakfast and then Skye drove the children to school. There was no fighting over who sat in the front seat as Arianna was quick to call 'shotgun' as soon as they entered the garage. Arianna couldn't help herself when she and Skye arrived back at the house, she showed Skye the ring that Jane wanted to give Maura. "Oh my God, that ring is so beautiful. Maura is going to love it."
"I know, I want to be here when Jane proposes. I just don't know when she is planning on proposing. I haven't had a chance to talk to her yet. They have been so busy with this case."
"They are always busy with cases, that is the nature of their job. She will just have to find a time to propose. Your cousin makes Maura so happy. I wasn't sure if she would ever be happy again. She refused to date after Sam died. She poured herself into her children and her job. Then Jane Rizzoli came into her life and turn everything upside down. She is so happy now, I love it. They are perfect for each other. They bring out the best in each other."
"I know, I have never seen Jane like this with anyone. My cousin never thought she would meet anyone that she wanted to settle down with and have a family. She was going to marry Nikki just because she felt it was time. She liked Nikki but she wasn't in love with her, she was just settling. Nikki changed after they got engaged. I am glad that Jane didn't announce their engagement to the world because they wouldn't have worked out." Arianna reached into the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water, she needed something to drink, she had been talking for a little bit.
After downing half of the bottle of water, Arianna continued, "Now, Maura that is a different story. I can see how much they love each other. I can't believe it, I mean I told her she would find someone but man Maura is so perfect for her. I am happy that Maura decided to give Jane a chance. I know she wasn't sure about being in a relationship with a woman and all but Jane isn't your everyday woman, she is rather special."
Skye nodded in agreement, they were perfect for each other and she was just happy that Maura was happy. They talked for a little bit and then Arianna asked, "What are you doing this morning?"
"Nothing really, I was just going to read my book and maybe go to the park later if it is nice enough."
"Well, I have the keys to the mustang and I was going to go to Jane's apartment and pretend to be her and mess with the staff a little, do you want to come along?"
Skye smiled when she saw the mischief in Arianna's eyes. "Sure, that is such a Jane thing to do."
"I know and we loved doing that when we were growing up." They cleaned up and then grabbed their jackets and headed out to the garage to start the beast up. Skye loved Jane's mustang and she had never been to Jane's apartment. She had heard about the terrific view but had never been there.
Ari couldn't help herself, after parking the mustang, she grabbed Skye's arm and looped it through hers and entered the building. The concierge looked at them and waved hello to 'Jane' as they proceeded to the elevator. Once they were in the elevator, Skye asked, "Did the concierge think that you were Jane?"
"Probably."
"Is he going to think that Jane is bringing a younger woman to her apartment?"
"Probably."
"Shouldn't we explain who I am so he doesn't think the wrong thing?"
"Probably."
Skye laughed as they entered the apartment, "Can you say anything else besides probably?"
"Probably." Arianna responded as they walked over to the floor to ceiling windows and looked out over the city.
Skye was in awe. Now she knew why Maura was so conflicted about what to do with the apartment. "This is an awesome view. I understand now why Maura likes it so much."
"I fell in love with this view when I first saw it when Jane moved in. It is a shame that the apartment just sits here vacant most of the time. Although I agree with why it is vacant. Jane would much rather be with Maura and the children."
"Yes, I agree, she would rather be with Maura and the children. You know I am feeling guilty for what you did to the concierge. I think I am going to go down and explain who I am."
"Whatever!" Arianna said just like Jane would say. "Just kidding, I will go with you. I just wanted to mess with them. Please don't tell them who I am though. Why spoil the fun."
"God, you are so much like Jane."
"Trust me, I am not normally like this, only when I am here. It is just too much fun. My husband and children know that Jane and I like to fool people and they enjoy watching the people's reactions. I don't want to ruin this one yet though so please don't give me away yet."
"Okay, I will stop at the concierge's desk while you go out to the car before we leave. What can I say to him though?"
"Just tell him who you are and that we just stop by to pick something up. They know that Jane lives with Maura and the children. They also know that Jane and Maura come here from time to time for some adult only time, if you know what I mean, and if you don't tell the concierge who you are that is exactly what he will think we were doing here."
"Arianna, I swear you just as bad as Jane. I am going to straighten this out, will except for telling him that you are Jane's cousin. I will let you have your little fun pretending to be Jane."
"Thank you." They left to go get something to eat before returning to the house. Arianna went straight to the mustang while Skye stopped at the desk to tell the concierge who she was. The concierge was pleased to know that Jane wasn't cheating on Maura. They all liked Maura, I mean they liked Jane also but Maura deserves more than to be cheated on. Skye was happy to have that cleared up. She would have to tell Jane and Maura about the incident in case it was mentioned in the future. She would tell them when the children went up to freshen up before dinner. It was Skye's night to fix dinner for the family.
Later when Jane and Maura got home, Skye asked them if she could talk to them while she prepared dinner. She felt that it was safe being as the children were busy in their rooms. Arianna knew that she was about to be outed by the nanny. "So, I knew that Arianna looked like you but I did not know that she acted like you also."
"Wait, what do you mean, Skye, what did my cousin do?" Jane asked as they all looked at Arianna.
"Look it was just some playful fun with the staff." Arianna confessed.
"Once again, I will ask what did my cousin do?" Jane asked having an inkling of what had transpired. She knew that Arianna was going to the apartment, and now that she knew that Skye went with her she could only imagine.
"Okay, okay, I will fess up. I took Skye with me when I went to the apartment and I might have had her arm wrapped in mine as we entered the building. I gave the concierge a huge smile as we walked to the elevator."
"Ari, I told you not to take a woman to the apartment. I don't want them thinking that I am cheating on Maura. I love Maura and would never cheat on her."
"I know, I know, Skye told them who she was when we were leaving."
"Did she tell him who you were also?"
"No, I asked her not to. I went to the car while she talked with him."
"Did he seem okay with your explanation Skye?" Maura asked, she was now curious.
"Yes, he seemed okay with the fact that I was the nanny."
"Skye, do me a favor."
"Yes, Jane, anything."
"Can you go to the apartment tomorrow with either Maura or the children or Maura and the children so that we know that things are okay."
"I would be happy to." Skye finished her dinner prep and put dinner in the oven. She set the timer and let Maura know when it would be ready and then she left to go spend the rest of the evening with her boyfriend.
Once Skye had left and Maura went upstairs to check on the children and let them know how long before dinner, Jane read Arianna the riot act for the little stunt she pulled. "Ari, I specifically asked that you not take a woman there."
"I know, Jane, I am sorry. I didn't think it through, I was just having a little fun. I haven't had fun in a while. It felt great to let loose and have a little fun."
"Is everything alright at home?" Jane was now curious as to why Arianna seemed to need to have some fun. She knew Arianna enjoyed her life in Italy with Mario and the children.
"Yes, it is just Mario has been so busy and the children are older, I get bored. That is why I decided to bring you the ring instead of putting it in the mail. I needed a little break from my boring life. Maybe I shouldn't have sold my business. That offer was just too good to pass up though and I thought going back to school would be fun. I love school don't get me wrong but I need something else."
Maura had walked in on the end of this conversation and had a thought, "Ari, how would you like to work for the Isles Foundation?"
"What, you want me to work for you?"
"Well, not for me per se but for the foundation. They have quite a few projects around the world and one of them is sure to pique your interest. I can put you in touch with our project coordinator and the two of you can see what project you might be interested in working with. We work with non-profit organizations all over the world. I am positive something can be found that will be perfect for you."
"Thank you, Maura. I think I would like that."
"That doesn't mean you are out of the doghouse for your stunt that you pulled today." Jane was adamant but she couldn't help but break out in a laugh after a few minutes as she looked at how sad her cousin looked. Ari started laughing with her and soon they were both laughing so hard their stomachs ached.
Maura just shook her head and went in the kitchen to check on the timer and see what else she could do to get dinner ready. She knew there would be quite a bit of laughter this weekend. Anytime that Jane and Arianna were together, laughter pursued and after everything that they had discovered in the last few weeks, they all could do with a some laughter.
