Chloe woke up in a cold sweat. She'd been looking forward to last night for so long and That was what she got? After eighteen years of waiting to find out who her destiny was and it had to be her? Of all people?
She jumped out of bed and pulled her clothes on. After her dream all Chloe wanted to do was get out of the house before her parents started asking all sorts of uncomfortable questions. After grabbing what she needed for school Chloe rushed down the stairs and out of the house, ignoring her mother's calls while jumping into her car. School was going to be a pain in the ass but it was preferable to the third degree that was waiting for her. But what was worse is that she only had a week that she could play dumb. Because in a week it would be her birthday and there was no way Beca Mitchell would keep her mother shut.
Chloe couldn't even remember how Beca got on her bad side...or more accurately how Chloe had gotten on Beca's. Ever since middle school the two just did not see eye to eye but she was pretty sure Beca had started it, or at least that's how her cloudy memory interpreted it. She shook her head to try and clear it. All she had to do was get through today, after that she could think through her dream and maybe even come up with a solution. Maybe Aubrey could help, she was a lot better at dissecting a problem than Chloe was.
"So wait," Aubrey sat down next to Chloe at their usual lunch spot in the quad. "Your dream of destiny...was about Beca?"
Chloe groaned and hung her head. "I know right? I mean, out of the eight billion people on the planet it has to be the one person that hates me the most."
"I don't know if she hates you." Aubrey picked at her food while she mulled over Chloe's problem. "You're just very different people. She's introverted and tends to lash out at people who get on her nerves. You, on the other hand, are extremely extroverted and try to make everybody your friend. Even if they didn't ask for it."
"What's wrong with that?" Chloe asked.
"Usually it's not." Aubrey patted her friend on the back. "But if I'm being honest we probably wouldn't be friends if we didn't meet in kindergarten."
Chloe's eyes went wide. "What?"
"Think about it, Chlo. Do I really seem like the type to go out and party every weekend? Or head to the beach at every opportunity?" At Chloe's face Aubrey rushed to reassure her friend. "Not that I dislike doing those things. It's just that if we didn't know each other I'd probably spend most of my time in the library."
Chloe groaned. "Am I really that pushy?"
Aubrey considered her words carefully. "Probably not to most people. You're charismatic and friendly enough that just about everybody loves you."
"Except Beca." Chloe pouted.
"Yeah," Aubrey tilted her head. Across the courtyard she could see the girl in question sitting by herself under a tree. "It's a real case of opposites attract."
"Tell me about it." Chloe slouched in her spot. "It's not like I don't find her attractive or anything. It's just any time I tried to be nice to her she gets cagey and distant. And that kinda stung after a while."
"Hmm," Aubrey munched on a carrot. "So what are you going to do?"
"I don't know." Chloe scratched at her head. "Her birthday is in a week. Maybe I'll wait until then, see if she'll actually approach me on her own."
"Sounds like a plan." Aubrey smiled. "I just hope you two can work it out, those dreams are supposed to be infallible."
"You're just saying that because the girl you saw in your dream was some busty model."
"Like I said, infallible."
A week passed with Chloe actively avoiding Beca. Which wasn't that hard since they never really talked anyways. But that didn't last long.
"So red. We should probably talk."
Chloe nearly jumped out of her shoes when Beca suddenly appeared behind her. She turned around to find the girl she'd been avoiding standing there, hand on her hip and an expression that showed just how uncomfortable she felt.
"Yeah, probably." Chloe said, once her heart rate settled down. She looked around the crowded hallway. "Do you mean right now?"
"Look," Beca ignored the question and took a step closer, right into Chloe's space. "If you want I can just ignore whatever it was that I saw last night and we can go back to not talking to each other."
"Beca, I-"
"Seriously, it's not a problem." Beca started to walk away. "Never liked the idea of those stupid dreams anyways."
"Wait!" Chloe grabbed Beca by the wrist to stop her. "I do want to talk but not here. Do you like pizza?"
Beca raised an eyebrow. "Are you asking me out Beale?"
Chloe actually blushed. "Yes."
The other eyebrow joined the first. "Alright. How about Luigi's? You know where that is?"
"Yeah," Chloe pulled out her phone and handed it over. "Can you give me your number?"
Beca typed her phone number, handing it back while scratching the back of her head. "So, meet you there at around seven?"
"Yeah," Chloe gave her a patented Beale smile. "See you then."
Chloe waited nervously in a corner booth, probably a little over dressed for a family establishment. She couldn't help it, after rifling through her closet for close to an hour she'd just said screw it and went with her best blue dress that matched her eyes.
"Damn Beale, way to show me up." Beca slid into the booth across from her. "Kinda making me feel like a bum."
"Are you kidding?" Chloe gave Beca a thorough look over. She was wearing a black leather jacket over a very nice button up that was open just enough to tease a view. "You look great."
Beca blushed and looked away. "Uhm, did you already order?"
"No," Chloe handed over a menu. "I figured we could share."
"Alright." Beca browsed the selection. "So, what exactly are we going to do?"
"I'm not sure." Chloe fiddled with a napkin. "I know what I want to do but I also want to hear what you're thinking."
"I'm thinking that the universe has a sense of irony." Beca said without looking up. "Why else would it pair the two of us together?"
"Is it really that crazy?" Chloe pulled down the menu so she could look Beca in the eye. "I mean, I know we haven't always gotten along but it's not like we hate each other. Right?"
"Wait," Beca looked confused. "You don't hate me?"
"Of course I don't." Chloe was just as confused as Beca looked. "I thought you didn't like me."
"But then," Beca looked around like an explanation would appear out of thin air. "Why did you harass me back in middle school?"
"What?" Chloe was now thoroughly confused. "What are you talking about?"
Beca groaned in frustration. "You used to follow me around all the time, asking really personal questions and laughing at everything I did."
"I do that with everyone!" Chloe rubbed her temples to try and abate the growing headache. "I thought you were cool and I wanted to get to know you. But then you snapped at me and I thought you hated me so I left you alone."
"Oh," Beca at least had the decency to look embraced. "Sorry."
Chloe sat back in her seat and took a deep breath. "I guess I'm sorry too. Aubrey kinda pointed out that I can be overbearing, which can come off poorly to some people."
"It wasn't just you." Beca slouched in her chair. "I've never been good at meeting new people. Usually whenever someone tries to introduce themselves I panic and push them away."
A waitress came over and took their order, excusing herself from the awkward situation as quickly as she could.
"Well, at least we're both self aware enough to recognize what went wrong." Chloe took a deep breath. "Do you think we might be able to start over? I promise not to be too over the top."
"Uhm," Beca started to blush profusely. "I'd be okay with that but you don't need to tone yourself down. I actually think it's kinda cute."
Chloe's smile returned just as their pizza arrived. They sat in silence while they ate and Chloe pondered what to say next. "So what exactly was in your dream?"
Beca scrunched up her face. "It was kinda weird. I was up on stage singing and you were the only one in the audience whose face I could make out. Then you joined me on stage and we sang together. Sounded pretty good too."
"Really?" Chloe's smile grew. "We should do karaoke sometime."
"What about yours?"
"My dream?" Chloe considered her options before deciding to just go for it. "We were singing together too. But we were both naked and in the shower."
"What!?"
