1. Excerpt from "S.O.S." by Rihanna
Back in Encanto, the people rushed as quickly as they could to place any crops they could salvage from the wreckage. Unfortunately, they were lucky to even find fifteen pounds worth of food.
"That's it?!" Bruno cried, seeing all the food. "There has to be more food left in the Encanto."
"If we give up any more, we'll all starve." Julieta said.
"Mariverde won't accept this!" Pepa panicked. If she still had her gift, there would be a huge storm brewing right now.
The triplets approached their mother with great worry in their eyes.
"Mama, it's not enough! What do we do?!" Julieta panicked.
"I-I don't know." Queen Alma said.
It was foggy. Everyone in the Encanto was scared as they began to hear something approaching. The sound of many moth wings buzzing as they fluttered quickly. But the people couldn't see any Puss Moths through all the fog. Then, they heard footsteps coming. At first, they only heard one person's footsteps. Then another, and then another, and then four more! And even more.
Puss Moths walked in from all directions in new armor, all of them carrying staffs, swords, and weapons of all kinds.
And that was when everyone heard the voice of the most feared Puss Moth of all!
"You little termites!" Mariverde shouted, having her mariclavas lift the little food the Encanto gathered. "I give you a second chance, and this is all I get?!"
Mariverde threw all the food down, just barely missing a slew of kids.
"But, Mariverde. We ran out of time!" Julieta said.
"Have all of you been playing all summer?! You think this is a game?"
The people all begged Mariverde to spare them, that they didn't mean for this to happen, but Mariverde, being the ruthless she-psycho she was, didn't give a hoot.
"Well, guess what? You just lost."
Pyra, the vampire Puss Moth, hissed at the children, sending them running in fear, and everyone in the Encanto tried to escape, but everywhere they went, the Puss Moths blocked their way and threatened them with their weapons.
"Not one man, woman, or child sleeps until we get every scrap of food in this kingdom!" Mariverde declared.
"Do what she says, and she might let you live." Gray sang, amid everyone running and screaming.
Queen Alma also tried to escape, but Mariverde landed in front of her.
"Oh, no, no. You're staying with me, Your Highness." Mariverde sneered under her hood.
The Puss Moths rounded up everyone they came across. But the puss moths didn't have quite everyone.
Rosella and Pedro watched from afar with some other children.
"Quick! To the clubhouse!" Rosella whispered.
The children all ran as quickly as they could, following Rosella to a special place Mila had built for the twins. A secret clubhouse that doubled as a bunker. Mila had said it would be a safe place for them to hide if they were alone and there was an emergency. This definitely qualified; the twins didn't need their sister's brain to see that.
Suddenly, Rosella heard the sound of some bushes rustling.
Rosella gasped.
"Rapido!" Rosella exclaimed.
Eventually, the kids came across two trees, where Rosella pulled up a bush that led to a slide, and she let everyone else go in first before sliding down herself.
"Shh!"
All the kids remained silent, Pedro shaking, but then seeming to be looking for something.
Rosella quietly went back up to a spot where she could carefully peek through a tree stump that was actually for checking if it was safe without being seen.
"Hey, I think I heard something over here," said a Puss Moth outside. Have you checked over there?"
"I don't know." said another Puss Moth.
"Well then, get over there and check it out!"
Suddenly…
"Wait a minute!" said the second puss moth, just outside the bunker.
Rosella gasped silently.
"Hey, I think I found something."
Rosella quickly and quietly ducked down and covered her mouth. Luckily, it wasn't her the puss moths discovered. Unfortunately, they did discover something else.
"Pretty." said the puss moth, picking up a little patchwork blanket. Pedro's blanket! And the Puss moth tied it around her head like a bonnet. "Hey, how do I look?"
"Like a grandma," said the other.
"I don't know, maybe it'll… keep me dry in the rain?"
"You dimwit! We'll be out of here before it rains. Didn't you hear Mariverde? After the Encanto picks all the food, that is when she'll execute the queen to remind the others who's boss and take over."
Rosella gasped again. She knew what 'execute' meant. Abuela was in danger! She had to get help.
"Everyone, stay here. Pedro and I will get help." Rosella said.
"What?!" Pedro gasped. "Why me?"
"Mila needs us. She's the only one who can save us all. We both gotta go." Rosella said. "Besides, the Puss Moths took Blankie."
"What?!" That gave Pedro motivation.
So, the twins got out of the bunker and began to run to the quickest path out of the kingdom, when Rosella bumped into none other than Pyra, who hissed at the twins.
The twins both screamed and began running for their young lives. They ran for their lives, passing through bushes, rocks, and Rosella even grabbed a tree branch and pulled it so it would fling and bash Pyra in the face, temporarily sending her to the ground and slowing her down.
Pedro and Rosella ran quickly by a river just outside the kingdom, and began climbing over a ridge that would lead them out of there. But Pyra came by and scared the two children right off the edge.
Laughing victoriously, Pyra flew back to join the others in the invasion of Encanto.
However….
Pedro and Rosella were both lifted up into the air, holding hands. But Rosella noticed something when she opened her eyes.
"Pedro! You're flying!" Rosella gasped.
Pedro opened his eyes and saw that his wings were indeed flapping.
"Yeah!" Pedro cheered, but he nearly lost his balance. "Whoa!"
"Cuidado!" Rosella grabbed her brother's hand to help him balance himself.
Pedro breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'm okay."
"Good. Let's go find Mila!"
And so, the twins flew as fast as they could and headed in the direction they'd seen the circus trailers go, hoping to catch up and somehow rescue Mila and their friends too.
Meanwhile, Myra, Ahsoka, and the younger children, as well as Mona, were still walking the long way to follow the carriage and rescue their family.
"How long have we been walking?" Turha panted.
"At least four hours." Myra said, everyone else groaning in response.
"We'll never catch up to Palpatine at this rate." Omega whined.
"Not with that attitude." Gabby said. "Oh, who am I kidding? Omega's right. Even if Palpatine stopped to set up the next show already, he'll probably be on the way to the next one by the time we get there."
"Well, we have to try." Goldie said. "We can't just all go to orphanages. I hear they're a lot worse than being on the streets."
"I'd rather be on the streets than wherever my mom is," said Mona.
"You're the princess of the Puss Moths." Lamenta said. "Can't you do anything?"
"Not really. Mama is a very scary lady."
Goldie and Lamenta were resting on Carousella's back.
"Is it my turn to ride yet?" Boba asked. "My feet are killing me!"
"They didn't exactly have speeders in Encanto." Ahsoka said.
Suddenly, everyone began to hear the sound of horses galloping.
"Do you guys hear that?" Myra said, looking around.
The galloping got closer and closer until.
"Whoa, caballos!" said a familiar voice, and stopping near the group was…
"Mirabel?" Myra said. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm going after Mila." Mirabel said. "I have to make things right with her, and with you guys too. We should've been able to help you. If you can find it in your hearts to forgive me, hop in, and we'll save your family and Mila together."
The kids thought about it. Riding a horse-drawn carriage would be easier than taking turns on Carousella's back, and they would need all the help they could get to save their family.
"Mirabel, wait!" exclaimed another voice.
"Rosella?" Mirabel gasped. Then she looked up and saw her cousin, and she wasn't alone. "Pedro! What are you doing here?"
"Things have gotten worse at home, Mirabel." Rosella said. "We gotta rescue Mila!"
"We'll explain on the way." Pedro said.
So, Mirabel attached Carousella's rein to the carriage so she could help Bruno and Mila's horses pull, and everyone else boarded the carriage. Rosella flew up high since she had the keenest eyes.
"Can you see the circus coach?" Mirabel called.
Rosella looked around until she saw the coach heading toward the city.
"I see them! That way!" Rosella pointed out.
"Keep flying, Rosella. You and Pedro can switch and give us a bird's eye view."
And so, Mirabel snapped the reins and began to move the carriage quickly according to Rosella's directions.
Palpatine continued to drive the coach, certain that this time his slaves wouldn't escape this time. He spoke over a P.A.
"I must admit. You were very clever before." Palpatine said. "But none of you will escape again. If you do, next time, I will hunt you all down and kill each of you, young or old. Now, I hope you've all kept up with your practice, because we have a show in Onderon City tomorrow night. And as for the new girl, we'll see what she can do soon enough. But for now, I believe one of the Fett brothers can help her with creating the next generation of performers."
"You're disgusting!" Mila said angrily. "I am more than just someone who can carry babies!"
Mila just started to cry. Tech took that as his cue to hug her. He knew she had every right to be upset. He'd spent his entire life in the circus, and even if he and Mila were together now, what was the point in trying to have a family if they were going to be slaves for the rest of their lives?
"You are not alone, Mila." said Tech. "We found a way out once, we'll find a way again. Somehow."
All the horses were imprisoned pretty badly too. Not only were they chained, but muzzled and tied up around their wings. Crescent tried to get out harder than anyone else. His sister was out there somewhere, and he had to make sure she was okay! But no matter how much he struggled, he couldn't get loose!
Crescent started to cry too, and the other horses were all saddened by the sight and felt tears falling as well. They'd finally gotten a taste of freedom for the first time in forever, but Palpatine took it all away all over again.
Carmine, being one of the most anxious of the bunch, began to hug himself and sing a song to try and keep his sanity.
S-O-S, please, someone help me
It's not healthy for me to feel this
Y-O-U are making this hard
I can't take it, see it don't feel right
S-O-S, please, someone help me
It's not healthy for me to feel this
Y-O-U are making this hard
You got me tossing and turning, can't sleep at night
Mirabel drove the carriage down a path where she could see the coach, but hopefully Palpatine wouldn't spot her or the others. They knew for sure the others were trapped in there, but they couldn't just wait for Palpatine to stop the coach and set up for the circus; it would be crawling with guards. The best way to rescue them would be to save them while the coach was still in motion, the only time the guards weren't on patrol.
"Okay, tell me again how you escaped the first time?" Mirabel said.
"Tech helped us all create a high-pitched frequency that demagnetized the shock collars," said Myra.
"But that time, we had many sources of sounds." Carousella said. "And Palpatine's restraints and collars can't be deactivated by magic. They're all magnetically locked."
"If only we could get close enough to see how to break everyone out without being seen." Ahsoka said.
Lamenta suddenly snapped her fingers.
"I've got it!" Lamenta said. "Carousella. I need a lift."
Carousella quickly realized what Lamenta was getting at, and got herself free from the reins before letting Lamenta onto her back. Lamenta then made her hand glow, and the moment she touched Carousella, both the girl and the horse vanished!
"Where'd they go?" Pedro gasped.
"We're still here." Lamenta said. "We're just invisible. Ready, Carousella?"
"Ready!" Carousella answered.
So, Carousella flew as quietly as she could to the roof of one of the coach trailers, where Lamenta spotted an air vent. Lamenta threw a pebble at the roof just to make sure it was safe. Nothing happened. So, Carousella landed very carefully so Lamenta could carefully remove the vent and look inside. Sure enough, she spotted the grownups in this one, and in the other, the horses. And Palpatine was driving, but he didn't appear to have any cameras handy in any of the trailers.
This was perfect. Now, Lamenta could sneak into one of the trailers.
"Hey, everyone." Lamenta said.
"Lamenta?!" Caroline and Carmine gasped.
"What are you doing here?" Padme said.
"Where are the other kids?" Anakin added.
"We've come to rescue you guys." Carousella said.
"You can't. This whole trailer is rigged with the same shock system as the old collars." Hunter said.
"The same system?" Lamenta asked to clarify.
"Yes."
"Perfect! Just hang tight. We'll have you out soon."
Lamenta and Carousella got back to the others and told them everything they learned. Except, without anything to make a large high frequency, they couldn't free everyone the same way they escaped before.
"How else can we free them?" Goldie said.
Mirabel started to think. What would Mila do in a situation like this? She decided to look in the bag of Mila's inventions and tools she'd brought with her. Something in there had to be useful. She'd packed in a hurry, so here's what she had so far: a bottle of Mila's sneezing gas, a couple of screwdrivers, a wrench, a multi-scope, a fire poker, and a bottle of Stop Shed dog shampoo Mila invented for her dog Chika.
"Ugh! None of this stuff looks useful." Myra said, helping Mirabel look.
But then Mirabel got an idea.
"Maybe not." Mirabel said. "Didn't you say the collars and system were activated magnetically?"
"Yes." Ahsoka said, then she realized what Mirabel was saying. "So, you're thinking if we demagnetize the magnetic field, the shock system will deactivate."
"But, how do you demagnetize a magnet?" Boba scratched his head.
"We learned this in science class," said Mirabel. "If I remember correctly, external magnetic fields or electromagnets can demagnetize magnets. If we can create one of those and place them in the trailers, we can free everyone."
"But how?" Omega said.
"Wait a minute!" Gabby said. "I saw something like this once on one of our tours. Someone made an electromagnet by wrapping copper wire around an iron nail. Is there any in your stuff, Mirabel?"
"Let me check." Mirabel looked inside and found a spool of a brownish shiny wire. "Yes! Copper wire. But no nails."
We don't need a nail." Omega said, remembering something. "We just need something made of iron to put in the center. Iron is magnetic."
"Are any of those tools made of iron?" Gabby asked, looking at some of the tools.
"Mila's wrench! And the fire poker" Mirabel exclaimed.
Quickly, everyone got to wrapping some copper wire around the iron tools. They tried to make as many coils as they could tightly wrapped around each tool to make them super strong. But, they still needed something with an electric current to run through the wire.
"Does anyone have a battery of some kind?" Mirabel asked.
"Do you really think Palpatine let us have electronics?" Myra said like Mirabel asked a stupid question.
"Maybe one of Mila's inventions runs on batteries!" Pedro said, digging through the bag. And she found what looked like a little radio. "What's this?"
"A radio!" Rosella said. "Maybe it has batteries in it!"
Ahsoka took the radio and used one of the screwdrivers to open it, and as it turned out, it had two batteries inside, which the others took and attached to their new electromagnets. Mirabel accidentally dropped the wrench into the bag, and when she pulled it out, a bunch of paper clips were stuck to it.
"Looks like they work." Mirabel chuckled. "Now let's go free your families."
None of the grownups knew what to expect when Lamenta came earlier. They weren't sure how she and the other kids planned to rescue them, but then they saw Myra come in, and she appeared to be carrying some kind of device.
"Myra?" Brenda gasped. "What are you doing?"
"What do you have there?" Mace asked.
"Trust me, Mom and Dad." Myra said. "I know what I'm doing."
Myra got the electromagnet close to the wall where the shock system was placed. Nothing seemed to happen… except the lights went out.
Mirabel did the same with her electromagnet in the horses' trailer. Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Carousella had another important job: Taking down Palpatine.
Ahsoka had Carousella fly by the front of the coach, where Palpatine was turning the wheel… Until Carousella suddenly dropped onto the hood, then headbutted the windshield.
"Here's Cary!" Carousella sang, startling Palpatin and causing him to swerve the trailer. Ahsoka jumped in with Carousella, and they began to beat Palpatine and restrain him with some more copper wire. And as luck would have it, Palpatine had some more shock collars, one of which Ahsoka grabbed and placed around Palpatine's neck and activated. Then, she grabbed the remote she'd seen him use and shocked Palpatine unconscious.
"Not so fun when the tables are turned, is it?" Ahsoka mocked.
Ahsoka drove the coach to the nearest town, and she and the others restrained Palpatine and his men and left them outside a police station with an anonymous note. The rest, they would leave to the police.
Boba and Omega used the screwdrivers to unlock the chains, but Ahsoka and Carousella also found the actual keys and used them too.
Mirabel was the one to unlock Mila's chains.
"Mirabel?" Mila said.
"Hola, Prima." said Mirabel.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to apologize for everything." Mirabel looked down and took off her tiara. "I should've stood up for you. You were right all along. Your inventions aren't ridiculous. They're smart, and so are you. You have so many amazing ideas, and you've never been afraid to just be you and speak your mind. I've always admired you for it. I've spent all my life trying to keep Abuela happy and do things the way she taught me to. But, I ended up hurting you instead. I was so afraid of losing Abuela's trust and letting the kingdom down, I didn't realize I was letting someone very important to me down. And I'm sorry, Mila. I shouldn't even be the heir. You should be the next queen."
Mila looked surprised at her cousin, especially when she placed the tiara in her hands. Mirabel had tears falling as she felt so guilty for everything that happened.
"Mirabel… I could never stay mad at you. You're like a sister to me. Ever since we were little, you've always been this wonderful girl who always wants to make others happy. And you're so creative too. A new queen needs someone with a creative mind, and who's soul passion is to take care of everyone in the kingdom. Someone like you."
Mila placed the butterfly tiara back on Mirabel's head.
"You were chosen as the heir for a reason. And I'd say, coming here to save me just shows you have the qualities of a leader. Besides, I'm more of a hands-on, inventing things kind of girl than the ruling the kingdom type. Queen of inventing is the queen I wanna be."
"What are all of you doing here anyway?" Qui-Gon asked.
"You have to come back to Encanto." said Pedro. "Mariverde invaded Encanto, and her gang's eating everything!"
Mila and the circus folk all gasped at that revelation.
"And I heard a puss moth say," said Rosella. "That when they're finished, Mariverde's gonna execute Abuela!"
That had everyone gasping again.
"We have to do something!" said Brenda.
"The roc!" Obi-Wan said.
Everyone immediately thought that was a brilliant idea. Well, all except one.
"The roc won't work," said, to everyone's surprise, Mila.
"What are you talking about?" said Anakin. "It was your idea."
"But, Mila…." Rosella said. "You said that-"
"Look, forget everything I ever told you and Pedro, Rosella." Mila said, looking down. "The kingdom's right. I just make things worse. I'm a freak of female nature. Why didn't I just spend my time playing with dolls and dating guys like all the other girls growing up? That roc is a guaranteed failure… just like me."
Mila just took off her tiara and her goggles and set them aside.
"Mila, you listen to me," said Padme. "I've had to make a living out of being a freak. And you, Princess, are different from other girls, but you are not a failure. You are a special girl."
"Oh, yeah? Name one thing I've actually done right…"
Mirabel was about to say something, but Mila interjected.
"Besides the Multi-Scope Invention."
The others tried to think of something to tell Mila that would cheer her up. There was a lot they could say about her.
"Mila, you're unlike any princess we've seen in fairytales." Myra said. "You're a genius, you stood up to your grandmother, and we've seen what you can do. You guided an entire kingdom to build a giant robot bird, for Pete's sake!"
"It's true, Myra. You're no amateur scientist." Mace said. "Lots of people would give anything to have a brain as large as yours."
"We all saw your schematics and your prototype inventions," said Hunter. "You have talent."
"Yeah, talent for coming with stuff the kingdom thinks is ridiculous." Mila said. "Maybe I'm a comedian."
"Nuh-uh. That's my thing." Comedia said.
"Mila, I can name one other thing you did that wasn't for your kingdom." Obi-Wan said. "You helped all of us."
The others had to agree. After Mila learned her friends were circus folk rather than warriors, she could've sent them away, back into the streets, but she didn't. Instead, she decided to do everything she could to make sure they would have a home somewhere safe, where they could belong, and start new lives.
"You gave us all a place to experience freedom." Carmine said. "To be ourselves."
"And if it weren't for you," said Anakin. "The little ones wouldn't have gotten to experience just… well, being kids."
"And Tech got his first girlfriend!" Wrecker teased, punching Tech's shoulder.
"We all believe in you, Mila." Mirabel said. "Your family needs you. Your kingdom needs you."
Mila had to admit, the things her friends were saying sounded so sweet. But, she still felt some doubts. All her life, she'd been told to keep her inventions to herself, put down the tools and pick up a doll or a makeup kit, and look for a man and become a wife and mother like the other girls. The only reason no one took her tools away or emptied her workshop was because Alicia threatened to kick their children out of her dance class or make them dance until they pulled a major muscle. You can probably guess which parent Mila got her fiery spirit from.
Usually, Mila just shook it off, and told the haters to take a hike. Then she'd use her telepathy to do something in retaliation. Give someone a wedgie, throw them into a tree, or make their carts roll away down a hill. She even went as far as to use her inventions to prank haters and make them eat their words.
It seemed, sadly, all those words finally got to her, and she wasn't going back to work anytime soon.
"Mila… please?" Pedro begged, making big sad eyes at his big sister, Rosella joining him.
But Mila just turned her back.
Rosella and Pedro couldn't stand to see Mila like this. They had to do something. Despite their magic being gone, their wings still worked. So, the two of them flew out of the trailers for a bit, and came back… with an apple.
Rosella tried to pull the apple apart. It wouldn't rip. Pedro tried too. It didn't rip.
"Here. Allow me." Qui-Gon said, taking the apple. And he ripped it in half with his bare hands and gave one half to each of the twins.
Pedro and Rosella each picked a seed out from their halves of the apple, and they walked up to Mila and each placed their seeds into the palm of Mila's hand.
"Those seeds are small now." Rosella said.
"But they won't always be." Pedro added, both twins recalling something their sister told them when they felt small.
"Who was the one who told us the ones who bloom later than others are the most beautiful of all?"
Mila was silent. She looked at the seeds and then at her siblings. And then, for the first time since before Palpatine attacked, Mila started to smile again.
"Thanks, hermanitos." Mila said.
And the twins came in and gave their sister a big hug. Then, Mila put her goggles back on, and her tiara.
"Alright, everyone." Mila said, standing up. "Let's do it."
"That's the Mila we know and love!" Aayla cheered.
"What shall we do first?" Shaak Tii said.
Mila had to brainstorm for this. Here's what she knew: the Puss Moths didn't know about the roc. However, they couldn't just walk right into the Encanto, because Mariverde would see them too easily. They'd need something to distract the Puss Moths long enough for a team of people to get to the roc and scare the enemy away. But then, Mila had an idea.
"How would you guys feel about doing a performance your way?"
We're nearing the end of the last unfinished Jedi Storytime. Not to worry though. There'll be plenty more soon.
