Chapter III. 4331.721 to 4334.233 CRC

"Alright!" Xenloth all but exploded once he'd met her new familiar "This is why you can't be a Sith isn't it? It's not the killing, kriff, I've seen you kill people in cold blood before! It's not the Force, you use it well enough for the training you've got…" he threw his hand in the air "But what kind of Sith collects stray like that?"
"I'm not a Sith." Arya reminded him
"I know! I'm just not sure anymore of just how much of one I'm anymore!" the other protested loudly "Let me have my existential crisis!"
"Sith, Jedi," Lyn'Me was the one to point out, in a relaxed way that proved how much the vergeance was still affecting them "Does it really matter?"
"It should! Or I used to think so!"
"The Force is the Force." Arya told him patiently, not really surprise to see the new notification pop as she'd just come to the realization anew herself

Above all, she was mainly happy to see the man have his existential crisis – because it proved that despite the years spent drowning in evil and dark emotions, there was still a real person underneath it all
"But… If so… Why…"
"Why do the Sith and the Jedi fight so?" Arya shrugged "I really couldn't tell you." she smiled "Why do you think I chose neither?"
"But then…" Xenloth wondered "What about…"
"Arkous?" Arya couldn't help but frown in reflexive annoyance "Force if I know!"

Existential crisis or not – it made Xenloth laugh and calm himself enough to realize "He's both the perfect Sith, and a terrible one, isn't it?"
"I'm pretty sure he believes in balance in the Force." Arya couldn't help but admit, her hands going to the back of her neck, where two silver and gold symbols were faintly echoing with the burning power of the Sith
"Balance, uh?" Xenloth mused
He didn't say anything more for several hours – but none of his traveling companions minded, all of them still cradled in the comfortable feeling of the Force.

One more month went by as they made their way back to the Unfettered Mooka – by then, Xenloth had gotten far more settled, now fully accepting of his new philosophy of life – but also of what would be needed of him to still pass for a regular Sith.
They set the cape for Ossus.
The travel time was less than a day, before they arrived near to a ravaged, nearly dead planet.
For a long time, Ossus had been home to a Jedi temple, even becoming the heart of the order during the Pius Dea era – and it was said that the largest Jedi Library was once hosted there.

But with the detonation of the Cron cluster, the planet had become an irradiated wasteland, pillaged by the Massassi warriors and the Mandalorian crusaders.
The planet had been considered as lost by all ever since but – clearly, once more, Arkous knew what he was doing in sending them here.
After all – the ship's computer was detecting multiple life-signs on the planet. Not as much as the large population it once held – but enough to denote at least a few small communities. Despite all odds, and against what the whole galaxy believed – life had prevailed on Ossus.
Still – the planet remained hostile, the ship's scanner revealing an atmosphere that could do damage to the skin when exposed to it for too long, and full of electrical storm – and the glimpse of the local fauna made it clear that it was quite ferocious too.

The team took it's time preparing to go to the surface, getting ready for what would be a dangerous expedition. On top of the scanners and recorders, plenty of rations were packed, with a water purifier and some breathers and protective clothes – and all knew this trip would be far less peaceful than the one on Lothal.
The scars of the planet were even more evident once on the ground, with dry red earth and sand, and nearly no vegetation at all – though at least, contrarily to Korriban, there was running water, in large, raging torrents. The problem was that everything was dangerous, as the whole planet emitted radiations.

This was when Nyla and the teachings of the Kashi Mer came in handy – the woman managing to talk them surprisingly easily through some advanced healing Force application from her people, the Healing Breath ability. While it was rather Force intensive, the ability, that seemed to be similar to the more advanced applications of Curato Salva among Jedi, proved rather essential to have on the dangerous planet as it regenerated the user's Life Reserve when used – which on Ossus, meant that they were healing themselves from the low but constants radiation damages they were being inflicted with each use.
It was also, Nyla explained, an advanced version of this ability that had allowed herself from slowing her aging when stuck in the wrecks of her old starship.

¤.¤.¤

Finding the ruins of the Jedi temple on the planet had taken them several months, even with the help of the ship's scans of the surface, and while maps of Ossus did exist, they all predated the cataclysm that had irremediably changed the planet's face, and thus weren't very useful.
The constant attack of the local fauna didn't help either – not to mention the hordes of mutated Geonosians that lived in primitive tribes, and once they started to find traces of the ancient Jedi settlement, the troves of old droids who seemed to be pretty much set on a 'fire on sight' setting.

They spent the following weeks and months searching through the old ruins. The experience was rather solemn, especially for Nyla, that was still coming to terms with the fact she was probably the last living person to remember her home world and civilization.
Of course, Arya wasn't indifferent either – though it may have happened several centuries ago, she could still feel the remaining wound in the Force from so many people's life ending prematurely, all her senses as a death goddess screaming at her about the wrongness of the situation.
Even Xenloth wasn't indifferent, founding this scale of destruction confounding rather than awe-inspiring like he would have a few years before – wars and battles he could understand, but what was the point of such large-scale destruction? It left no winner behind, be they Sith or Jedi.

While she did grieve for the people whose life had been cut short and home destroyed, Lyn'Me was perhaps the one who felt less deeply touched by the traces left behind by the Jedi of Ossus – the situation was horrible, and she did empathize with them, but she was lucky in that it didn't hit quite close to home for her as for the other three.
As such, she took it upon herself to keep the team's mood up, managing to make a better fare for the five days of the New Year Fête and seeing to it that the other three didn't spend all their time searching the old temples, and letting themselves get too dispirited by what had happened to Ossus.
She also took it on herself to teach Arya how to dance, and the basics of seduction, using a half-embarrassed half-amused Xenloth as the training dummy.

Once the Twi'lek had started to give her some lessons, Arya found herself quickly unlocking not only the Dance and Seduction proficiency, but also the Singing one – and while she didn't have many ways, nor real interest, to improve her Seduction proficiency just yet, the dancing and singing ones were growing rather fast, between her memories from previous lives, and the way her sister always manage to draw all of them into enjoying a bit more the evenings.
Arya's lifeday came, and they were nearly done with their cataloging of the ruins – what databanks from the old archives, that hadn't been destroyed or corrupted, had been left in place, merely copied. They did find a few artifacts – or rather, they felt, they were allowed to find a few artifacts, as it had become clear the more time they spent in the Jedi ruins, that they weren't quite alone.
They were Force users hiding from them, and while their ability to remain invisible in the Force was akin to the one the half-Mirialan had learned from the Fallanassi, it couldn't hide them from her Soul Art and more godly powers.

The hidden people felt – somewhat primitive and diminished, she mused, yet moved with the will of the Force like Jedi did. They were the survivors of the planet's upheaval, she realized, and clearly, the time for them to rejoin the galaxy wasn't yet here, as it would probably taken them several more centuries or maybe even millennia before they reached the point where they could fully be considered a sentient specie again.
Those unknown people had been keeping an eye on them, and Arya didn't doubt that had they tried to pillage the ruin instead of merely doing a rather passive exploration between the recordings, scanners, and copy of the data uncovered – they would have intervened.

The fact that they were following the will of the Force was confirmed to her when they didn't protest when Xenloth did uncover one artifact – as if hidden by the Force under the remnants of a landslide, the reformed Sith had found the skeleton of a man, and two lightsabers.
One was the weapon of a Jedi – the other, that of a Sith; yet both held a very similar design, which could only mean the two wielders of those blades had been close, very close.
Brothers, he realized, as a Force vision showed him flashes of the past as he kneeled to pick up the two blades.

The first saber had belonged to Cay Qel-Droma – the second to his brother, Ulic, a Jedi who'd fallen to the Dark Side, rising all the way to the rank of Sith Lord, and eventually striking down his brother. In that moment – he'd been cut from the Force by his former lover, and the double shock of realizing he'd killed his brother, and of losing the Force, had made him stop his path of destruction.
He'd dropped his blade by his brother's side, thought he would eventually make a new one – and by the time he died, still cut from the Force, he'd been once more a Jedi in all but the name.
The two blades held adegan crystals – one green, the other bled red.

It was rather fitting for the man that, while he couldn't really call himself a Sith anymore, wouldn't claim to be a Light Sider either – but those two blades, one Light, the other Dark, balanced each other in a way they really shouldn't for the weapons of people as opposed as Jedi and Sith were.
Xenloth hid the remains of Cay Qel-Droma back under the ground, leaving behind with it his own saber.

¤.¤.¤

A few days after Xenloth had found his sabers, he'd decided that it really was far past time Arya started to learn more about lightsabers, and the fighting styles used by both Jedi and Siths. He felt a bit peeved at the girl's lack of interest, stating that for now her own blade was more than enough.
The Dark Sider had complained that her blade was great – but too short.
Arya had responded by pointing out that her tanto was far more useful and discreet than his flashy weapon – then proceeded to get KageShin out of her Inventory, to reassure the man that if needed, she did have a bigger blade.
Not even bothering to ask from where she'd taken the weapon, as he'd gotten used to seeing her grab things that weren't there the moment before over the years, Xenloth had proceeded to examine the katana with all the enthusiasm of a weapon fan-boy – then decreed that it was all the more reason for her to learn the fighting style of the Force users.

When she pointed out the fact that a physical blade wasn't really conductive to the fighting styles used by both Siths and Jedi, the man had countered by walking her through the stance of Shii'Cho, the first lightsaber form, and one that was developed back when live blade were still commonly used by the Jedi.
Why the man even knew this form – Arya couldn't say, but while he was more a warrior than a scholar, Xenloth's master had been Arkous, who clearly was a scholar himself, and that may well be all the explanation there was to it.

Shii'Cho was an unpredictable form, a bit too reliant on emotions for the Jedi, and not violent enough for the Sith – it still was the basics of all the fighting styles that had followed, and remained quite effective when used by a master.
Arya may not be a master of Shii'Cho – she'd gained a quick understanding of the style, as like always, she took to blade-fighting far easier than range-fighting. It had made Xenloth rather antsy to have her get her hands on a saber, but on this point, she favored far more the Jedi's philosophy than the Sith's – if she needed a lightsaber, the Force would guide her toward what she needed.
Rather surprisingly, Lyn'Me had found a lightsaber too – a shoto, a short off-hand blade, that she found entangled in the root of a gigantic tree that had miraculously survived Ossus' near destruction. There was more to the tree, she could feel – as it shone as brightly in the Force as a Jedi master would.

Still – the tree had merely loosened its hold on the blade hidden under it – and while Lyn'Me was pretty sure there were other sabers under it, she didn't insist, feeling clearly that she'd gotten what she needed, and taking more would be inopportune.
As for Nyla and Arya – the ageless Kashi Mer and the incarnate goddess had found themselves lost in the underground tunnels under the destroyed temple, following the nudging of the Force deeper underground, until they stumbled upon a network of caves illuminated by countless, softly glowing crystals.
Both had the rather strange feeling they were being watched by some sort of otherworldly being – not Mana herself, Arya recognized, but some other Force deity she hadn't known about. She hadn't expected it, but wasn't that surprised – with how large this realm was, it would have been surprising if there weren't at least a few Third and Fourth Circle deities hanging around.

And one of them, it seemed, resided in the depths of Ossus.
She distantly felt Nyla get swept in a vision, and start to wander in the caves.
She followed the call of the divinity she could feel, and the urge of the Force, deeper in the bowels of the planet.
Eventually, she stumbled into a last crystal cave, the deepest there was, and the center of the deity's powers.
There was someone in the cave – a man, humanoid looking, yet taller and slender than a human, with thin facial features, glowing violet eyes, and more importantly, heavy scaring and burning covering over half of his body.

This, she realized, was Ossus – the divinity born from the planet itself, and its form showed the damages wrought upon the planet.
"I'm so sorry I can't heal you…" she whispered in lieu of greeting, keenly feeling the absence of Light, who would have been able to help the god while she was powerless to do so
"Don't apologize for being yourself." the man contradicted her lightly "You have brought a companion with you that is already doing as much as she can." he pointed out "It is more than enough."
Indeed, Arya realized – she could feel the power of Nyla coursing through the god in front of her – and ever so slowly, some of the scarring was receding, leaving behind healed and healthy skin. Given how badly the man was hurt, Nyla wouldn't be able to do much – but it still healed damage that would have otherwise taken the planet-bound deity decades to heal from.

While she couldn't heal the god, Arya helped the powers of the Kashi Mer Force user as she could, by using her affinity for the Wild and for Nature – helping the woman's powers to reach deeper and be sustained just that much longer.
"I thank you." Ossus told her once Nyla had done all that she could, and both felt the woman's presence recede as she headed back toward the surface, a light green adegan crystal in one hand
The god had watched their presence upon their world, he explained, risen from the sleep he'd fallen into after the cataclysm by Arya's own arrival.
In a way, her mere presence had helped, as now that he was awake once more, the god could focus more on healing himself than he had while unconscious.
He'd found himself more and more curious about the odd team, and thus taken the opportunity to call for her when she found her way to the crystal caves, since he was yet too weak to leave the nexus of power that was both his heart and home.

It was a lonely feeling, the god admitted, to have lost all the sentient life there once inhabited his realm – even if he already could feel that the Ysanna, the semi-sentient specie that had evolved from the Jedi who'd survived by hiding in his caves, would eventually rise again as a civilization of their own.
Arya didn't really watch how much time was going by, as she weaved tales for the entity, about what was going on beyond the borders of his powers, the conflicts, and changes that had occurred in the galaxy in the six centuries he'd spent asleep, and even her own path as a soul taken from this galaxy and eventually ascending in another world, growing from life to life, until she was ready to come back – to help her mother, and maybe a few more people along the ways.

When she left, Ossus had thanked her for the tales she'd woven, and that would keep him entertained for the centuries and millennia to come while he healed.
He'd also gifted her a shard from the very center of the cave's crystals.

Arya put the green focusing crystal on her wand-staff, knowing that Xenloth would probably complain loudly about her not making a lightsaber if he knew about it – but it just felt right that way.
With that done, they'd left Ossus behind, and headed back toward Dromund Kaas.
Xenloth had rather reluctantly redone the mask of a Sith, while Arya was headed toward the Intelligence headquarter for debriefing – while both Lyn'Me and Nyla were provided with imperial identification and left free to roam in the capital city.

Padfoot and Blanche on her heels, the half-Mirialan smiled as she met with Deaknal again for the first time in over a year – though both father and daughter kept their decorum, since they were still in the halls of the intelligence building.
" Congratulations on your first successful mission." there was a hint of well-hidden annoyance as he added "Darth Arkous has seen fit to congratulate you in person for completing the task he'd set you, and is eagerly awaiting the rest of the data you've collected on his behalf."
Arya refrained from rolling her eyes, but neither was really surprised about the Sith's attitude. The red-skinned man was lounging in Deaknal's own chair in his office, and this time Arya did roll her eyes, knowing her father well enough to know he kept his office clean from any spying and recording devices.

As for Arkous – he was laughing, his eyes going from Padfoot to Blanche, and back.
After a few moments, the two familiars, clearly fed up, padded to him – the tuk'ata lightly nipping at his hand while the loth-wolf settled her head on the chair's arm-rest and watching him with a reproachful yip. Arya felt rather surprise by how friendly they were – Arkous did stop, merely smiling "Starting a menagerie, nuya Jen'Nwit?"
"You're the one who gave me Padfoot."
"I certainly didn't give you this one." he pointed out, nodding toward the wolf who was letting him pat her head, confirming once more to the incarnate goddess that there was more to the Sith than he let on – loth-wolves didn't like Dark Siders after all, and no matter that there was more to Blanche than to a regular wolf, she still held their instincts

"No, she came to me herself." Arya agreed with a smile at the white wolf with a blue crescent moon on her brow
"I hear you've also picked up a few strays." the pureblood Sith mused "Which is just as well, given that you'll be needing a convincing crew if you're to maintain your cover with the Unfettered Mooka."
"I'm to stay with my cover as Dasha Ellan, then?" the green-skinned girl asked – just as much to her father as to the Sith
"All signs are pointing toward an approaching end to the current cease-fire." Deaknal was the one to explain with a sigh "And to some people plotting for it on both sides." he added with a frown "What is more worrying is that those people have been able to keep hidden from both Darth Arkous and me."
"So… that's where I come in?"

"It is." Deaknal agreed "Your next step is to get promoted, so you'll need to do something rather big to manage that." a smirk, and with a click, a holo of a Hutt appeared above his desk "Like bartering an alliance between this guy and the Empire."
"Er… not that I don't want to do that, but since the Unfettered Mooka is known as a freedom-fighter, isn't our presence more susceptible to make the situation worse?"
"It would be, if you were to work alone." a smirk "I'm assigning another agent to the task with you. You'll be playing the part of the Republic's kusak in the manger, while the other agent will play the role of the Red Blade, a famous and ruthless smuggler, whose reputation should work well in this."
"And I'll play the bait?"

"You'll be seen assisting Nem'ro's rivals, that are for now mere thorn in his side… With your help, they'll become large enough a menace that when the Red Blade arrives, he'll all but jump in the arms of the empire."
Of course, Arya and her crew weren't about to just go back to their ship and leave right away – Arkous wanted to go through the data they had brought back, and Arya was to be on hand while he did this.
Which somehow let to the girl spending the week in his pied-a-terre in Kaas City.
She had to admit – one thing the Siths did well, or at least this Sith did well – was enjoying the luxuries of life. And the penthouse, with it's startling view of the city's skyline and surrounding jungle, was richly yet tastefully decorated, and full of old Force artifacts, both from the Light and Dark Side.
Naturally, Arkous already knew about most of the data and recordings she'd brought back, and in truth, most of their time was spent in the large sparring room, lightsaber in hand.

Saying no to Xenloth was easy – but Arkous hadn't really given her any choice, merely throwing a weapon at her before attacking.
Two things were immediately clear.
The Darth was far more balanced than he claimed to be, something she already suspected but hadn't been able to verify – but here in his home, he was apparently assured enough about the barriers that he dared to let his mask down.
And while he really was quite interested in knowledge – there was a reason why it was for his prowess on the battlefield that he'd become a Darth.

¤.¤.¤

The blade he'd tossed at her was red – yet it was neither a bled crystal nor an artificial one.
The Sith probably used it as a hidden shoto – for Arya, who was quite smaller than him, it made for a regular-length main weapon, one she took to quickly.
A lightsaber was quite different from her katana, she had to admit, and true to her character, she greatly enjoyed learning to use it- and learn quickly she did, as the Darth was quite intently trying to kill or maim her – and she retaliated just in kind.
She had barely acknowledged the notifications about unlocking the Ataru and Juyo proficiencies and quite a few new fighting abilities– far more interested in the ongoing fight. Sure enough, she'd been in her fair share of fights over the years, but this was different, far more thrilling – this was the rush of a one-on-one clash of skills, with strictly no outside consideration, the kind of which she'd always enjoyed, and had not yet experienced in this life.

It was maybe also, what she had needed – to finally get more of an understanding about the Darth who'd played a rather important part in her life yet remained quite mysterious to her.
Mysterious in a way no mortal should be.
It was only by fighting him that she finally started to realized what should have been evident – and probably would have been on any other world, outside of the Purgatory.
First, and something she hadn't realized yet, but the other probably had known from the start, since he was far more versed in the Force – the two of them shared a bond in the Force. Which explained all those times the man had always found her so easily, no mater how well hidden in the Force she was!

[Achievement unlocked!

New Force Bond(Darth Arkous): +40 XP]

Secondly, and maybe more importantly…
Just like her, Arkous was an incarnate god.
Or, really, part of one.
Except – that Arkous had no knowledge of it, and had spent all his life knowing he was different from all other people, without knowing why. Until he met her, and immediately knew they were alike, even if he didn't quite know how and why.

Arkous – was the missing piece of War.
And contrarily to both of their expectations, the piece of soul had sufficiently healed itself to become sentient.
She…
Really didn't know what to do about it.
With Arkous being a sentient being in his own right, healing War soul wasn't going to be quite that simple, as she was probably going to have to do something similar to what she had for Kagetsu and Kurama – her familiar sharing his soul with the other kitsune, since both had been born as the same entity, which had been torn in two by Namikaze Minato.

And of course, Arkous had a right to know about what he was, but explaining to a Sith, no matter how sane, that he was in fact part of a god, didn't really seem like a good idea. The situation was going to have to be explained slowly over time, in order not to overwhelm him with the unexpected knowledge – dodging under the red blade, she pushed with the Force, Arkous somersaulting above her retaliation before sending a surge of lightning toward her.
Of course, when she meant overwhelm, she really should say – be an overwhelmingly smug bastard about it.

"How rude, nuya Jen'Nwit, thinking about something else when spending time with me!" the pureblood Sith teased, managing to disarm her with the butt of his lightsaber "Am I not entertaining enough?"
His eyes widened, as he finally realized that sometime along their fight, she'd become aware of their bond, and of his presence hovering not too far from her mind at any time they were close enough to feel each other in the Force.
"I'm the rude one?" Arya winked "You're the one taking advantage of a bond I didn't even know existed. Really, isn't taking advantage of an underage girl against morality or common laws?"
"I'm a Sith." Arkous all but purred "I really don't care about either."

Arya laughed, not really surprised about the answer, and tugged on the bond, surprisingly him enough that she could Force push him, and pull her own weapon to her.
With that, the fight was on once more – and any question about what to tell him, and how, or even about the why of their Force bond, was put aside for now.
She couldn't say how much time they spent fighting – probably far too long given that by the time she was slumped in a sinfully cozy sofa that somehow didn't look improper in the Sith's interior, after a long, warm, shower – the sun was setting on Kaas City, the lights of the night were starting to color the cityscape in shades of neon colors.
"So," Arkous asked as he came back from his own shower – he was less exhausted as her, simply because he had years of training and endurance on her, but still had quite the workout "what had you so distracted earlier?"
"You." the half-Mirialan admitted
"I'm flattered."

¤.¤.¤

Arya rolled her eyes, not bothering to turn her head toward the red-skinned man who was making his way to the sofa, a datapad and some holocrons in his arms – an incarnation of War's powers he maybe, and truly a master of it, he still was surprisingly interested in all kind of Force knowledge for someone who'd been trained as a marauder rather than a sorcerer.
"I can't believe you hid this bond from me!"
"I told you, I'm a Sith. Why wouldn't I take advantage of the situation?" a smirk "Besides, it was far too entertaining to see your frustration each time I found you when you were hiding." the man shamelessly admitted
"You're no more Sith than I am."
"That's still what I was born to be." Arkous pointed out "I may have reached further in my understanding of the Force, it was bound to leave some traces!"

She laughed at the deadpan answer – though really, he was only telling the truth – but admitted "I was surprised, sure, but that's not what surprised me more." the golden speckles in her eyes condensed in three swirling tomoes as she slightly dipped in her godly powers, making the other immediately react
Golden eyes focused on her intently – and she knew that right now, he was watching beyond her physical appearance or Force presence.
"You are a tease." he accused her dryly "Is it because of your Twi'lek friend or do you come by it naturally?"

"Both." Arya answered with a sweet smile "Consider it pay back for all those years of hiding our bond from me."
With that, she let herself sink in the shadows of the sofa, feeling his frustration as she disappeared back to her room in her cabin on the Unfettered Mooka – quickly followed by the man tugging through the bond to send an outraged "You took my favorite throw-over!"
"It's to help stroke your anger, oh mighty Sith."
She was answered by an inarticulate feeling of exasperation which she found rather hilarious.

He could wait a bit before learning more about what he – and she – were, she decided.
After all – she wasn't against a bit of healthy retribution.
"So," Xenloth wondered a few days later when he came back aboard the light freighter, once more donned as a mercenary "what did you do to my master?" a laugh "He's been tearing through his opponents like an angry terentatek!"
"Teaching him the value of patience." Arya deadpanned

Xenloth raised an eyebrow at the answer "Patience?" he snorted "I may have finally realized he's not as rooted in the Dark Side as he pretends… I can assure you he isn't hidden some sort of endless well of patience, quite the contrary."
The green-skinned smiled sweetly "All the more reason to help him learn."
The Sith warrior rolled his eyes – neither were very surprised to hear the next day that quite a few of Arkous' opponent had disappeared during the night. None would ever be seen again, of course.
While she spent the next few days getting her revenge on the frustrating Sith by playing hide-and-seek with him, Arya hadn't been able to keep herself from reaching through the Force bond with her godly powers to help him.

Now that she was aware of the bond, she even understood somewhat why it existed – because Arkous was only half of a soul, he had always lived in pain, but hadn't even realized it until he met Arya; or rather Shadow, whose powers, as attuned toward souls as they were, and geared to influence both mortal and immortal souls, had naturally tried to help him.
Of course, she couldn't really heal him, not without the other half of his soul around – but it had still helped enough that a Force bond had been established.
Arkous still didn't realize that his soul was incomplete – but he did realize that he felt more whole when she was around than not.

It was the first time in a long while, for the goddess, that her powers had acted that independently from her – the previous time had been when she'd started to heal the Vindice's souls back in her first life – but she couldn't bring herself to regret it.
She remembered well enough Kagetsu and Kurama's pain when their common soul had been cut in half, or Truth and Father's madness…
War, she rather pitied, though understood, the god having gone as far as voluntarily cutting his own soul, fearing his powers – Arkous, she felt no pity but only compassion toward, as the man was born from the very powers cut by the god, and didn't even know why he was both incomplete and different from the people around him.

Where Father had grown mad in but a few centuries, War's powers had not only managed to attain consciousness, but also retained a hold on their sanity instead of falling in the easy pit of a Sith's endless well of rage.
Which is why Arya finally let him catch up with her once she felt the pureblood Sith reach the end of his patience.
"I want my throw-over back." the Darth immediately demanded, clearly not speaking his true thoughts
"It's mine now." the half-Mirialan contradicted lightly "I'll bring you a new one back from my next mission."
"I'd rather have some answers." he said, this one getting to what he really was thinking
Arya had thought about it – about what to tell to the red-skinned Sith.

Getting into the idea of other worlds, and gods, not to mention the Purgatory and the Abyss, or the fact that Arkous himself was only a part of a larger soul – it wasn't going to be easy. Of course, as Shadow, she had already gone through several complicated explanations – explaining to her atheist brother that she was a goddess hadn't been the easiest after all.
She looked around, checking that there wasn't anyone in sight with both her Force and Soul Art senses, before catching the Sith's hand, surprising him enough that it was quite easy to drag him through the shadows, back to her cabin on the Unfettered Mooka.

She could feel some surprise from the man, though it wasn't from their trip through darkness.
"Dragging me directly to your bed, nuya Jen'Nwit?" Arkous teased "How daring."
The usual banter – was hiding his reaction, but it was only then that she realized that it was the first time she had touched him voluntarily outside of a fight, something that clearly hadn't escaped the other's notice.

"Do you remember your previous lives?" she asked settling on the couch and gesturing for the other to join her
"Previous lives? As in reincarnation?" the red-skinned man mused, clearly surprised -Arya wasn't surprised, it wasn't something Jedi nor Sith believed in
"Precisely." she nodded, explaining "Young souls tend to live short lives, but as they go back to life again and again, they age and become longer-lived species."
"And do you remember that?"
"Beside my current life, I remember five different lives over the course of several thousands of years." she confirmed
"And you thought I might remember too?"

"It was a possibility." she agreed "After all, even if it's incomplete, your soul is far more resilient than that of regular mortals."
There was – a lot in what she'd just said, and clearly, Arkous was taking his time analyzing it. A few minutes went by in silence in the nearly dark room, before he eventually asked "Incomplete?"
Arya nodded, before saying "Some people sometime believe that cutting their soul in pieces will keep them alive." she couldn't keep the distaste from her voice while saying such "But death comes to all mortals in the end, no matter the method they try to use to escape him."
Arkous' eyebrow rose at the phrasing, missing neither the fact she was talking about herself as something other than mortal, or the fact that she was talking about Death as an entity.

"So why are you immortal, then?"
Arya laughed.
"Mostly accidentally." she admitted "I was young, desperate, and facing a dark lord with decades of power and experience on me." a wistful smile "My mentor, fearing the fight would end with my death, found a way to make me gather three items who were reputed for giving eternal life."
"And those items worked."

"They did." a shrug "Or rather they gave me a choice. Stay mortal, and go through the usual cycle of reincarnation…" a wistful smile "Or become more."
"You're not someone who lusts for power." Arkous couldn't help but point out
"I'm not." she agreed "Not for power itself." a shrug "But when he came to me, Death told me that to ensure my life, my mother had condemned herself to something terrible."
"And the only way to save her was to take the power." the Sith easily guessed, proving just how well he understood her
"It was." she agreed "I've been sent back to live five times since, most of the time in an entirely different world, and growing in power with time, until I was able to head into the very dangerous world where my mother's soul had replaced mine."
"And that's why you're here?"

"That, and helping a friend find the missing part of his soul." she eyed Arkous "Of course, I don't think War expected his mutilated soul to partially heal and gain awareness when he was dumb enough to cut himself away from his powers."
Arkous was far from stupid.
"I'm… part of someone else soul's?"
"That's how you were born." Arya contradicted "But right now… You're you, and no one else." a shrug

"I doubt your friend is going to appreciate his powers gaining a mind of their own. Especially not with a name like War."
Arya's smile was a bit more ferocious than she meant as she answered "He was Stupid, and cut his soul in half, despite knowing how bad an idea it was. Now It's my job to heal his mistake."
"Your job?"
"One of them." she agreed "It's not even the first time I see something like that." a smile "I even had several adopted children that were born from cutting a soul apart. As infuriating as you are, you are your own being, and as such, I'll ensure that you retain yourself." a shrug "Sharing powers is far from unheard of among us, I do share my own with two brothers."

"Brothers?"
A smirk, as she let her eyes bled to golden tomoes "Death and Chaos."
"How fitting." Arkous laughed "So… What's you real name?"
She really didn't want to answer him – and with the Force bond between them, it wasn't hard for the Sith to feel as much. His eyes widened, as he realized there could be only one reason why she was so reluctant to answer.
"You really are a shadow, aren't you, nuya Jen'Nwit?"
Arya refused to answer, instead sending a throwing knife that cluttered her Inventory his way – Arkous caught it easily, twirling it around his fingers "All of this… Would sound like heresy to any Sith nor Jedi." a sigh "It goes against everything I've ever believed, yet somehow, I can't bring myself to disbelieve you."

"Of course." Arya nodded, not too surprised "While War is your dominion, it isn't too surprising that you held a minor affinity to Death, and souls can't lie."
She had tried to put the emphasis on the fact that most of the Sith's interest in her stemmed from their powers echoing with each other's as her gift over Chaos tried to heal him – but on that point she felt she hadn't been quite successful.
She could nearly hear Light laughing at her, and saying something about attracting dangerous predators.
After all – wasn't War one of the biggest predator in existence, in the end?

¤.¤.¤

She only managed to forget about the hypothetical teasing from her partner several days later, once she was once more in the air with the Unfettered Mooka and it's crew.
The next few months, they spend working with Voontara Fa'athra, a young Hutt who was quickly raising in power and reputation among Hutt-space.
Neither Arya nor her crew really liked working with the Hutt, but it was unavoidable to make him become powerful enough to push Suudaa Nem'ro in the arms of the Empire. Of course, with a team of Force Sensitives, and her training as an Imperial Agent, it was rather easy to keep up the appearance of helping Fa'athra, yet still discreetly hamper him at the same time.

They'd taken to work with a local unfettered, an Evocii calling himself Huttsbane, putting him in touch with their own freedom-trail to help those that didn't dare oppose the Hutts yet still yearned for freedom escape Nal Hutta.
The Evocii's fate, Arya had mused – truly were one of those things that convinced her she had chosen correctly when staying with Deaknal, as the Republic itself had abandoned the primitive specie to their fate, all but bowing to the Hutts' whim as they appropriated Evocar and renamed it as Nal Hutta, then used the local populace as slaves, along with relocating most of them to what eventually became Nar Shaddaa.

The New Year Fete had come and gone, and a new player had entered the fray – Ketan Seva, as the Imperial Agent was calling himself, was a red-skinned Zabrak with prominent tribal black tattoos, a broken horn on his left side, and dark green eyes.
Of course, as they were playing enemies, they couldn't talk openly with each other – but between encrypted messages and double-talk, the Unfettered Mooka's crew and the fake Red Blade had quickly established an amicable working relationship.

Most of the following months were spent in an elaborate game of cat and mouse, Ketan slowly pushing back the forces Arya and her crew had spent the past few months building up, bringing back a status quo between Nem'ro and Fa'athra.
Of course, that was when a couple of Sith acolytes had to kriff up and kill the sons of the man Ketan was buttering up to ingratiate himself to Nem'ro. The two agents had had to react fast, enacting a rather convincing bit of foul-play where the Republic was accused of the murders, Fa'athra lost quite a bit of his power and influence, and Nem'ro swore an alliance with the Empire.
After that, all of them were called back to Dromund Kaas, Ketan Seva becoming the newest Cipher Nine, while Arya herself was given the Cipher Seven moniker.

But the most notable thing, upon their return to Dromund Kaas, may well be the fact that there was a different Sith from usual in the Intelligence Headquarters – Darth Jadus was the latest member to have been granted a seat in the Dark Council, and he'd immediately been given authority over the Empire's Intelligence department, something Arkous' had been unable to prevent.
And Jadus was not quite as hands-offs as his predecessors, something that, of course, wasn't to the taste of her father, though he couldn't do anything against it.
Thankfully, with two agents being promoted at the same time, the Sith had decided to snatch the one that looked more competent for himself – and to the prejudiced, misogynist and xenophobic Sith, the older, male, Zabrak, clearly was more interesting than the young half-Mirialan.

So – while Ketan was sent on a personal mission from the latest Council member – Arya was once more on her way to Arkous' penthouse.
It was, she mused, maybe telling that by now she all but had her own room in the place.
Something, she knew, her father didn't quite like, though he didn't protest too loudly – she still saw the dark look she sent the way of the Sith, which truth be told she found rather funny with how private Deaknal usually was with his feelings.

Much of their time was spent in the sparring room of the pied-a-terre, but they also kept an eye on Ketan's mission, the Zabrak still sending messages to Arya via their encrypted communication channel as he was just as suspicious of working for the Darth as she was about his mission.
Step by step, Ketan started to track the Eagle, a new terrorist who was acting up around the Empire – and whose latest plot was to blow up the power system under Dromund Kaas, or so it seemed.
In the end, it was nothing but a diversion tactic from the Eagle, who managed to blow up the Dominator, Jadus' flagship, with the Sith himself aboard.
Jadus' own apprentice and daughter, Darth Zhorrid, quickly snatched Cipher Nine, tasking him with tracking the terrorist organization that had killed her father.

Of course – it was clear that there was more to the situation than was apparent.
Over the next few months, Ketan tracked the Eagle network across Balmorra, Nar Shaddaa, Tatooine and Alderaan, preventing a plan to detonate dangerous orbital weapons on each planet and eventually tracking the terrorist back to Nal Hutta.
Of course, during that time, Arya was traveling around and investigating too – and it quickly became apparent that Darth Zhorrid wasn't so intent on avenging her father, rather than ensuring his death, as she suspected it hadn't been as definitive as suspected.

And while Jadus, even if he was a thorn in Arkous' side, had been surprisingly calm and even tempered as a Sith, his daughter, who'd succeeded him on the Dark Council, certainly wasn't.
Better get rid of the two – and if Zhorrid wouldn't be that hard to deal with, Jadus, who ,as it quickly became apparent, was indeed still alive, was quite another story.
Arkous may be an uprising Darth lord- Jadus was currently clearly known as second only to the Emperor in terms of power, and the youngest Darth to join the Council in decades.
Not too long before the end of the year, Jadus' flagship, that hadn't been quite as destroyed as it appeared, had been tracked in Deep Space.

Jadus had expected Zhorrid, knowing his daughter well enough to suspect her treason – what neither he nor Zhorrid hadn't expected was the Unfettered Mooka and it's crew of Force users.
Nyla wasn't one for fighting, but she was ready to heal everyone for afar – Xenloth was lethal, now rather well-used to his new twin-bladed Jar'kai style, and relentless against the younger of the two Siths. Lyn'Me was covering them all with a rather impressive blaster-canon she'd been lovingly tinkering with for months, something that Ketan adapted stunningly quickly, though he was having difficulties with the powerful Sith.

Of course – that was without counting on Arya's own help, the seventeen-year-old half-Mirialan taking out KageShin – and keeping her T-181 in it's blaster-form in her off-hand, and both her currently incarnated familiars.
Zhorrid died quickly, too stunned by the unexpected resistance to realize what was going on.
Jadus was similar enough to Arkous that within a few minutes, a thin smile was curling on his lips.
"I should have known that pureblood upstart wouldn't have taken an interest in an alien without a good reason." his eyes were roving the Unfettered Mooka's crew "Force users, all of you, how quaint!"

¤.¤.¤

Ketan's eyes widened at that – he'd known about Xenloth's identity as a warrior, and Nyla had never hidden her own abilities either, but neither Arya nor her sister advertised their Force abilities. The Zabrak then proved his ability to adapt by taking the new information into account seamlessly, not even batting an eye-lid as Arya openly started to enhance her moves with the Force, batting Sith lightning out of her way with a hand, T-181 now back in her Inventory, or push back items sent her way by Jadus.
Still – not matter how good the team was, they were weakening, the Sith lord more than powerful enough to take care of them all.

Lyn'Me had been dealt with first, violently sent flying against a wall and canon crushed with the Force – Arya had felt her worry spiked, but could feel her still alive, and Nyla already checking on her.
Then it was Ketan, whose screams her blood-curling has a blast of lighting fried through his nervous ending, taking him out of the fight – of any fight, for at least a few months. It was taking Nyla all she had to keep the man alive, Arya could feel, as she found herself fighting two on one with Xenloth against Jadus – and even like that, they were having trouble.
Blanche had then taken a nearly lethal hit for her daughter from another life, losing a leg in the act. Padfoot had barely managed to drag the loth-wolf out of the way before Jadus finished her off, Arya scream in base fury and barely holding on her senses as she attacked more heatedly. The Sith, of course, was taking advantage of the girl's fury, even if she'd eventually regain a hold on her temper.

Jadus was just too powerful for Xenloth and her.
The Dark Council, they knew, was on its way – but they would be too late.
Thankfully, there was someone closer, someone's whose familiar presence she'd been feeling growing steadily closer.
Jadus, no matter how powerful he was, hadn't been ready for Arkous.

In an instant, Xenloth had been caught in a Force choke, and Arya run through with his lightsaber, the red-blade slipping through her ribs and puncturing her left lung, barely missing her heart – then Arkous had burst in, and for once, Arya could feel endless fury coming from him.
It was taking most of her focus not to slip and faint, but instead to keep on healing herself, darkness bleeding on the edges of her sight, while she was watching the two Siths fight.
Arkous was pushing Jadus back hit by hit, his usually golden eyes now a deep-red, bloodlust impossible to miss, just as his ties with War.
Most people would have found him terrifying – Arya found him beautiful.

She may even have said as much to him once he came back to her, splattered with the blood of the human Sith he'd just done a Sai Cha on – she didn't quite remember as she was delirious from blood-loss by that point, and barely managing to keeping herself alive via Force healing.
When Arya woke up, she was on the Ember, half-naked and with a brand-new starburst scar right under her left breast – stretching her senses, she realized that Arkous wasn't far, probably in the starship's cockpit, Blanche and Padfoot close-by, the beautiful loth-wolf now missing a limb but otherwise healed, while her crew wasn't much farther, in her own ship, and Ketan and his own crew just nearby too.

More importantly, they were nearing Korriban's star-station, the green-skinned girl already able to feel the heavy, pernicious feeling of the planet's dark presence in the Force.
Feeling a spike of worry, Arya shored up her shields on her Force presence, suddenly remembering that she hadn't been able to use her Hiding Bangles for months, nor had she taken the time to make new ones, as she'd spent so much time out of the Empire – only then realizing that her Force presence had been neatly hidden by Arkous' own until now, all but pulsating from the back of her neck.
She didn't need to pass her hand at the back of her neck to know the symbol there had changed once more, remembering feeling a vague memory of it sometime during their travel toward the Sith planet.
Only there hadn't been any pain this time, she faintly remembered – or not on her part, at least.

Deciding not to linger on the idea of the pureblood Sith using the rather Jedi-ish technique of pain-sharing on her, Arya looked around, easily finding some clothes, getting dressed and getting to the cockpit where the Sith was finishing his docking maneuver.
"You shouldn't be up yet."
The red-skinned man's voice was different from usual, she noticed – just as the simmering feedback of his feeling she could catch both via her Soul Art and their Force bond. He still felt – much more like a Sith than usual, she realized, suddenly reminded that just like the daiyoukai she'd been in three separate lives, pureblood Sith were much more primal and in tune with their instincts than humans.
His eyes – were still red.

"I don't plan on overdoing it." she reassured him
He wasn't quite wrong after all – she knew herself well enough to realize just how close she'd come to dying, and while she was up to walk around a bit, she wouldn't be of any use in a fight anytime soon, as the lightsaber wound was much worse than a simple sword wound would have been.
Red eyes peered at her intently, the other prodding through their bond to double-check how truthful she was, before nodding shortly.

"Right." he agreed, visibly getting some of his temper back under control "I'm heading toward the Council Chamber, they're probably going to promote me to hide how unprepared they were for this whole disaster." he sneered "After all, only a Council member should be able to kill another council member."
Arya wasn't surprised – it was rather evident in retrospect.
Still, she would have though that the Sith would have been happier about it – it had been one of his goals for a while, after all.

¤.¤.¤

"Not at the cost of your life!" he answered heatedly, probably having caught the thought through their bond, nearly losing the tight hold he was keeping on his temper
She nearly flinched at the intensity of it, realizing just how terrified he'd been of loosing her, and with her any hold on his sanity. Before, he hadn't known about the hole in his soul and been used to the constant pain he was living in – but now, he knew there was more to the galaxy than he'd ever known, he'd grown used to the feeling, both soothing and thrilling, of the Force bond that nearly made him forget the pain.
Going back to how things had been before was unthinkable to him.
Arya winced – put like this…

But what was even more surprising, to her – was the genuine fondness beyond the sheer need for their bond. She really shouldn't be that surprised, Arkous was someone in control of himself enough that he wouldn't debase himself by keeping someone around just for personal comfort, he'd proved as much when he sent her to Korriban after all. He hadn't expected their bond – it was for the potential he could see in her that he'd decided to invest in her.
He hadn't expected either to grow fond of her – not any more than she had.

"I'm not that easy to kill." she reassured him "Beside, I've promised to both War and you I'd help, and I intend to keep my word, even if it means incarnating again in this world." though, she didn't say – she would really rather avoid it, given how painful it had been to bound her soul to slip in the reality marble's Mortal Realm
This time, she really didn't mind the hand that quickly settled on the back of her neck as the red-skinned Sith stepped by her side to head out – this time, it was more a silent show of affection rather than about power or domination, though she knew it wouldn't be that easily noticed by anyone else.

While Arkous was stuck in hours of rather sterile talks with the Dark Council as their newest member, Arya had headed back to her ship, where her crew minus Xenloth, who'd been summoned by the Dark Council, was quite relieved to see her.
"What that Sith did to save you was dangerous." Nyla told her a bit later, while she was busy tinkering in the starship's hold – Blanche was in need of a new leg after all "Both for you and him."
Arya nodded, not really surprised.
She'd felt it after all – just how deeper their bond had become, which was quite a feat, given how powerful it had already been.

What Arkous had done – was rather similar to what Light had done once upon a time as Roy Mustang, sustaining her life with his own, though in the current case it had been only a temporary measure.
By the end of the day, the Ember, Unfettered Mooka and Phantom Nine were heading back toward Dromund Kaas.
Xenloth Nor had been promoted, and was now known as Darth Storme, Arya's father had been promoted by Arkous and was now Minister of Intelligence.
Arya and her crew had been rather lucky – as they were working with Xenloth, no one had batted an eye at their confrontation with Darth Zhorrid and Jadus, assuming they'd done so under the Sith's orders.

Ketan Seva had been less lucky, and Deaknal's only way of saving him from distrustful Siths that felt rather leery of an Imperial Agent able to go against a Sith, had been to implement Castellan Restrains on him.
The process was as good as brainwashing, and could be initiated with but a word – and was a mean for the Siths to ensure the man wouldn't act against them. Both Arya and her father felt quite bitter about the Restrains, but it had been the only way to spare Cipher Nine – as for Arya, as Cipher Seven, she was still out of action, as she couldn't appear to heal too quickly if she wanted to hide her Force powers.

She took advantage of her down-time to create a new prosthesis for Blanche, unlocking a Mechanic proficiency along the way, look at discreet ways to undo the Sith's brainwashing methods, but also dive in Arkous' library of Force texts, some of them even on real paper – the Archivist proficiency that came with it had been an unexpected bonus.
She was slowly telling more about the First Circle gods to Arkous – though she never pronounced the word god, not believing the man was quite ready for it. Hearing that War had a twin-sister had rather intrigued him, as he was an only child and pureblood Sith didn't often have siblings, and she knew that he was intelligent enough to start guessing about the preternatural nature of the First Circle gods.

4333 CRC came to an end, and with the start of 4334 CRC, Arya, now eighteen years old, was once more ready to for missions – back to the Unfettered Mooka and it's crew, whose reputation had risen enough over the years that they'd finally caught the Republic attention…
"A privateer for the Republic?" Arya repeated as the new Keeper – and former Watcher Two, who'd back in the days been her father's Minder – gave her new assignment "I mean, I don't mind, but… What's in for the Empire?"
"Your aim is to become useful enough to the Republic to make you work with their regular military." the new Keeper explained "You probably won't be back in the Empire for a while, but given that the cease-fire is predicted to end within the next two years, you'll need to already be in position to be useful once the war starts again."

Arya hadn't been surprised by the affirmation – after all, both her father and Arkous had already noticed that there were people pulling the strings, people good enough to remain hidden from the Siths and with a reach long enough to manipulate even the highest levels of the Empire's administration.
The war starting back, by now, was all but inevitable.
But what Arya really needed to do – was to find who was working behind the scene.
