Chapter 4

Caitlyn arrived to the office early as usual. After a very uneventful weekend. She looked foreword to putting her mind back to work, rather than her body. Feeling frustrated and lonely over the weekend made her spend extra time at the gym. She was sore, but felt ready for a new week. Hopeful that she could manage to figure out a way to spend time with Vi. After running countless miles on the treadmill, she realized her feelings weren't going away.

Caitlyn made her way to her office unpacking her things. Before she even had a chance to sit down Vi was tapping her shoulder.

Caitlyn jumped foreword with a light scream.

"Whoa sorry, sorry ,sorry Cait, I mean Sheriff. I didn't meant to scare you like that. I thought you saw me come in behind you".

Caitlyn grabbing her chest trying to slow her breathing back down, "no Vi I definitely did not see you, and what on earth are you doing here so early"?

"Well I thought I would try and set a good example for Ali, you know, don't want her thinking the Sherriff allows slackers now do we".

"Well it's good to know that after a year of me telling you to be on time that all it took was a pretty face to get you to do your job properly". Caitlyn said harsher than what she meant to.

Vi looked at Caitlyn with a confused, hurtful look on her face. "Damn, that was low. Here I brought you a bagel and a tea, you don't look like you have been eating well lately. I'm just going to head back to my desk and finish the paperwork that I so conveniently slack off on". Vi turned to leave Caits office. She felt hurt and confused. She could tell Caitlyn was struggling with something, but never thought she would get the wrong end of Caitlyn's wrath. Caitlyn would often get after Vi for things like being late, or not getting reports done on time, but she was always playful and kind about it. Often praising Vi for being an excellent enforcer despite not knowing how to use an alarm clock properly.

As Vi was heading to her desk Caitlyn went to grab Vi's arm, Vi quickly pulled away. "I'm sorry, you're right, please come back in and sit down with me". Just as Vi went to answer multiple officers began spilling into the office. One of them being Alina.

Alina caught Vi's vision giving a big wave and running over to greet her partner.

Vi looked to Caitlyn, "another time I suppose SHERRIFF". Emphasizing sheriff as she turned and walked towards Alina.

Caitlyn's heart fell to the pit of her stomach. She sat in her seat a lovely bagel and tea set down in front of her by the only person willing to look out for her, as she basically told her she wasn't a good officer.

Caitlyn found herself constantly on edge. Getting after officers for small, petty things. She felt she was on the verge of losing it without a way of pulling herself back in. Weeks went by as Vi avoided Caitlyn as much as possible, only meeting with her when Caitlyn brought up her motorcycle once more.

"I've decided you can continue to use your bike for close patrols, but if you need to venture out further I've arranged for you to take one of the night shifts cruisers. This should make carrying your gauntlets and your partner much easier". Caitlyn smiled hoping to get a smile back from Vi.

"very well, anything else Sherriff".

Vi wasn't still mad at Caitlyn for her remarks made earlier in previous weeks, but decided to keep the conversation short, due to the fact Caitlyn kept yelling at officers and writing them up for what Vi felt to be bogus reasons.

"No that is all Vi".

Vi went to leave her office. "Oh Vi" Caitlyn quickly spit out.

"Yes". Vi exclaimed.

"I want to thank you for being an excellent officer and example to your partner".

Vi's could feel her eyes immediately start to pool

"Anything for you cupcake".

Vi quickly turned around and headed straight for the ladies room, not wanting anyone to see that she might have watering eyes. As she turned the corner she ran into Jackson, a fellow officer.

"Damn allergies". She muttered as she quickly pushed open the women's room. She went in and immediately wiped her eyes. Hopeful that her and Caitlyn could get back on track to being friends, and maybe even more Vi thought. "no no, she would never go for someone like you". Talking to herself in the mirror.

Caitlyn's whole body felt warm as she heard Vi call her cupcake. She felt a rush of hope that things would get better for her and the one person she considered her friend.

That evening Caitlyn sat at her desk listening to her officers clean up, talking about what they were going to do that Wednesday evening. One of them Caitlyn wasn't sure who, suggested the bar. A big important fight was happening at summoners rift tonight between the top Red, and top Blue teams. Everyone in the office, Vi included yelled a big "hell ya" as they all now rushed putting there stuff away.

Caitlyn hated it when her officers would frequent the bars on working days. She hated them coming in hungover smelling of cheap liquor and cigars. Although she couldn't tell them no, she could remind them to watch themselves. As she was about to make her way out to the bullpen, she immediately stopped herself. "no" she thought. I need to back off and relax a bit on my officers. They are all professionals. She knew she had been hard to be around these last couple weeks, and decided to sit back down at her desk.

The next morning was nothing special for Caitlyn. She took a few important calls before lunch, and worked on paperwork before setting out to grab a quick bite. She did notice her officers were a bit more quiet today than usual, but chalked it up to staying out to late watching the games. As she got up and got her bag, she realized she hadn't seen Vi this morning. Caitlyn had been stuck in her office all morning on very early conference call with the commissioner and mayor over budget issues.

She grabbed her bag hoping to run into Vi on her way back to ask if her team won, and how her night went.

Caitlyn exited the office only to stop "shoot, I forgot my phone". Caitlyn turned to head back in the office only to stop as she could hear voices just around the corner, and a certain phrase caught her attention.

"Did you see what Vi did to that guys face"?

"Did you see Vi's face after his buddy got involved"?

They both chuckled

"Ya but did you see who Vi was taking home with her last night, Alina. So I guess it all paid off for her".

"No way" the second person exclaimed.

"Oh ya, they even road in together this morning. Alina still wearing her same clothes as last night, doing the walk of shame if you know what I mean".

"Damn, why couldn't I get a hot new easy partner".

They both laughed turning the corner only to run right into a bright red fuming Caitlyn.
