Marinette and I dash along in the sewers, and I'm praying we don't hit a dead end. I can hear Marinette's ragged breathing behind me, she's getting tired and so am I. But if we stop, I fear the consequences.
As if out of nowhere, a woman dressed in a dress with feathers and carries a feather fan. No, no, no! I pray this isn't a compliance to our purser and I hear slight sob coming from Marinette's throat.
"Get me behind and climb up into the air duct. You'll come out on the other side safe and sound. Please trust me!" "Who are you?" I ask. "The Songstress. Now, hurry!"
I waste no time helping Marinette up into the grate and she tosses her high heels into the sewers. Good, those didn't look very comfortable to begin with. But instead of crawling away from the danger, we watch the scene below.
"So, you took a risk, Amelie," the Supreme says. I gasp. The Songstress is my aunt? I peer closer and see that Aunt is swaying slightly and she looks pale. "Adrien and Marinette are family. To get to them, you go through me. Besides, how could they go through the brick wall?" She sweeps her fan towards the wall for dramatic emphasis. "There's hidden powers in every Miraculous, and when I get my hands on them, I'll find their hidden powers! You may have won this time, but I have many tricks up my sleeves."
The path were they stand is divided and each take a different path, like the paths of good and evil. "Marinette, we have to get back down there!" Marinette tugs hard on my arm. "No, Adrien! You heard her, we need to get far away! Your aunt is wise and smart, she'll be okay!"
The worry cloud drifts away, and find Marinette's cheek to kiss. "You always seem to plan, Marinette. Come on, let's go."
The progress is relatively easy as light shines through the grate, but the further we go, the darker it becomes. "Ow!" I cry, bumping my head on the wall. Its dark and cold, and I'm growing fruasted. "Adrien, just follow my voice," Marinette tries to calm me down. "We'll be out of this maze soon…" I stop listening as Plagg is wiggling around like crazy in my shirt. "What? Can you smell cheese?" Two green eyes glow with excitement. Plagg darts away, but I know he won't go far.
"Whew! There's a strong stench up ahead! Ouch! Did something just bite me?!" Marinette yelps. I have to cover my laughter with a cough. I'm a hundred percent sure that was Plagg, not happy that Marinette called his beloved cheese a "stench."
"Adrien!" Marinette breaks into my thoughts her voice high with exciment. "I can see light!"
I stop behind her as she carefully removes the grate. I scramble around her. "Here, let me out first, and I'll catch you!"
I hold my breath as I jump, landing with a soft thump! Breathing a sigh of relief as I land safety.
"Okay, go ahead. I'll catch you!" Well, I thought I could catch her, and when she springs into my arms, I topple backwards with her landing on my stomach. "Ooh," I moan softly. "So much pain." "Are you okay?" she nearly shrieks, but I clamp a hand to her mouth. Don't want set off any alarms. I help Marinette to her feet and she gives a small gasp. "Adrien!" "What, what hurts?" I ask. Besides my body and dignity. "Adrien, there's a shadow in the corner!"
"I'm no shadow, I'm the Great Magician!" Felix walks over to us. "Felix?!" I squawk. "How did you get in here?" "Not through a air vent. I'm watching the store for a friend and was about to close up shop."
"You think your friend would mind if I bought a wheel of cheese?" "Adrien, is all that kissing Marinette effecting your brain?" Oh, help me. "Just give me the cheese and no one gets hurt," I tell him playfully.
After we finally get home and get cleaned up, its very late and I fall asleep to the sound of Plagg snarfing his cheese.
In the morning, when Marinette comes over, her eyes are pink, like she didn't sleep well, and she only pokes and her eggs and toast. Aunt Amelie places a cool hand to her forehead. "Hm, you aren't running a fever dear. Perhaps your just tired from last night."
"Yeah, that must be it." Last night we both agreed not to bring up our dash to safety or the Songstress, unless Aunt brought it up herself. Just then, Amelie begins coughing. "Mother, are you okay?" Felix rushes to her side, and I have a hard lump growing in my throat. When Mother was sick, her cough was eerily similar. "Maybe I should lie down for awhile," she says. "I'll be in my room if anyone needs me."
Felix heads out and Marinette and I are left alone. "I'm going to refreshen up," she says. "Okay. Maybe we could take a walk after."
I'm passing the bathroom when I hear small sniffling sounds and I pause. "Marinette?" I knock on the door. "Are you okay?" "I'm-I'm fine!" she calls back. "Are you sure? Should I come in?"
There's a slight pause and she calls back in a small voice, "Okay."
Marinette is sitting on the floor holding a small hand mirror and I gasp when I see her. Spider-like veins crisscross her face and neck.
"What happened to you? This isn't from last night is it?" "No. Adrien-I…." she hides her face. "Marinette, honey, tell me."
"I'm not just Marinette, I also go by the name of Toxinelle. And when I use my Lucky Charm another crack finds its way to my face. I shouldn't have kept the truth from you this long, but The Supreme is unpredictable."
I stand up. "I know about the Supreme," I tell her quiet, then splash my face with cool water and turn back to her. "Because I am Claw Noir."
