Chapter 13: Chase's Recovery and Marshals dateSkye woke up the next morning with one thing on her mind, Chase. She had Breakfast with the other pups. Then she asked Ryder if she could go see Chase. Ryder told her that it was okay, so she went and saddled her pup pack.
"Where are you off to so early in the morning," Rocky asked.
"Uh, too see, um Chase," Skye said with a nerves smile.
Rocky gave Skye a funny look.
"Okay, have Fun," Rocky said, putting emphases on the last word.
Skye barked out her wings and flew off to see Chase. She met Dr. Heeler at the front desk of the hospital.
"Hello Skye, I figured you'd come to see Chase." Heeler said.
"Yes, may I" Skye asked.
"Yes, you've come at the right time, we are going to try and put Chase on what we like to call "Training wheels". It's basically a set of motorized wheels that he'll wear on his hinds to help him start walking again; he'll wear them until he is completely healed as his hind legs and spine sustained quite a bit of damage. Anyway we might need your encouragement because getting him out of bed might be a little painful for him." Heeler said.
"Sure I'd love to help," Skye said.
Skye, Heeler, and some other human nurses walked to Chase's room.
"Hay you, how are you feeling," Skye asked as they entered Chase's room.
"Hay Skye, I'm not great, but I'm better then yesterday," Chase said.
"Okay Chase so today we are going to try and put you on a set of motorized wheels to help you start walking again. So what we are going to do is I'm going to have Stacy here slowly lift you up and set you down while Stella and I attach the wheels to you hinds, okay," Heeler said.
Chase looked at Heeler with uncertainty, he looked at Skye, and she nodded her head and smiled.
"Okay, let's do this," Chase said.
So Stacy walked over and slowly lifted Chase up. He winced as pain shot through his hind legs. Stacy held Chase up while Heeler and Stella attached the wheels to his hinds. Stacy then slowly lets go, Chase stumbles a little bit but he eventually finds his balance. Chase takes a step, and another and another until he's walking all around the room.
"Yes, yes good, see that wasn't so hard," Heeler said.
"Ha, hallelujah I can walk again, yeah," Chase said with glee.
"Ha, ha, oh Chase you're doing it yes," Skye said.
"Yes and you are clear to go home, as long as you take it easy and allow yourself to heal properly, but let me get Ryder and Marshal over here to teach them how to care for you." Heeler said.
After Heeler taught Ryder and Marshal how to care for Chase, Marshal took Chase home in his ambulance. Chase stepped out and took a deep breath. It was good be home; Chase looked around and smiled as he saw his friends playing in the pup yard.
"Hay pups look whose home," Ryder said.
"Chase," shouted the pups.
The pups all rush to see him, but the pups stopped with looks of horror when they saw Chase's wheels.
"Chase, what happen to you dude," Zuma asked.
"Just some severe burns and damage to my hinds, it's okay pups, I know I look different, but I'm still the same old Chase." Chase said.
The pups still just looked at him with sad eyes.
"Is, is it permanent, um your wheels," Rocky asked.
"What, oh uh no, it's just until I am fully healed," Chase said.
The pups all let out sighs of relief, then the all perked up and gave Chase hugs and welcomed him back. Chase hugged all his friends and then realized that Marshal wasn't there. He looked around and saw him in his pup house franticly looking for something. Chase walked over to see what Marshal was doing.
"Hi Marshal," Chase said.
Marshal jumped up and hit his head on the roof of his pup house.
"Whoa, ow, son of a mutt you scared me," Marshal said.
"Ops, sorry, what you looking for," Chase asked.
"Oh, my red bowtie, I could have sworn it was here," Marshal said.
"You mean that bowtie over there," Chase said pointing to a red bowtie on the bookshelf.
"Oh, that's where it went, the little bugger," Marshal said taking the bowtie and putting it on.
"Why were you looking for your bowtie, if you don't mind me asking," Chase asked.
"Oh, um, I'm just, uh going out with Everest tonight," Marshal said with a nerves smile.
"Oh really, where you taking her," Chase asked.
"Mr. Porters for ice cream and then out to the cliff to watch the sun set over the bay," Marshal said.
"Sounds fun, good luck Marsh," Chase said.
"Thanks, oh shoot, I have to go get groomed, uh see you guys later." Marshal said.
Marshal hopped in his fire truck and raced off to Katie's. When he got there he rushed inside and hoped in an empty tub.
"Katie, I need to be groomed now, please," Marshal said.
"Whoa, um okay, but what's the hurry Marshal," Katie said as she turned the water on.
"I'm going on a date with Everest and I need to look my best," Marshal blurted out.
"Okay, slow down, you going on a date with Everest, congratulations, what are you two going to do," Katie asked as she began to wash Marshals fur.
"I'm taking her to Mr. Porters for ice cream and then up to the cliff to watch the sun set under the bay." Marshal said.
"That sounds romantic; you know you two would make a great pair." Katie said.
"You really think so," Marshal said.
"Yes, you are two young, wild, energetic dogs, I've seen you two together, and you two would make an amazing pair."
Marshal blushed as Katie finished drying him off. Marshal looked in the mirror.
"So what do you think," Katie said.
"It's perfect, thanks Katie," Marshal said.
"Your welcome Marshal, good luck with you date," Katie said.
"Bye Katie thanks again."
Marshal arrived at Mr. Porters before Everest, he waited and a few minutes later Jake dropped Everest off. Marshal watched Everest get out of jakes car. His eyes widened as he saw how beautiful Everest looked. Her lavender colored fur was washed nice and clean and brushed to perfection. Her icy blue eyes were like two frozen lakes in the Winter Mountains.
"Hi Marshy, you ready," Everest asked, bringing Marshal out of the trance he was in.
"Huh, uh ready as I'll ever be," Marshal said with a goofy grin.
Everest and Marshal Laugh and the two walked into Mr. Porters.
"Hello Marshal and Everest, what can I get for you this fine evening," Mr. Porter asked.
"Strawberry ice cream for me," Marshal said glancing at Everest.
"Hehe and mountain berry ice cream for me," Everest said.
"Coming right up" Mr. Porter said.
Marshal and Everest sit down at a table designated for dogs. The updated each other on their lives. Marshal just couldn't get over how beautiful she looks. He just stared at her beautiful fur.
"What are you looking at," Everest said with a giggle.
"Oh I was just thinking about when I first laid eyes on you back in the South Pole, How beautiful you looked." Marshal said.
"Stop it," Everest said, blushing with embarrassment.
"Oh, no I mean it, you know somebody once asked me who I thought the most beautiful pup in all of the state of Georgia was and do you know what I said."
"What did you say?"
"I said, that I thought the most beautiful pup in all of the state of Georgia was you Everest."
"Oh stop it, Marshy, just stop it."
"Now why would I stop Evey, I've only just started," Marshal said.
The two laugh at Marshals joke. Then Mr. Porter came out with their ice cream, the two thanked him and began to eat.
"So, how's life in the high mountains," Marshal asked.
"It's nice, the mountains have so much natural beauty, but it's pretty lonely, I just wish I had someone to share the beautiful mountains with," Everest said.
The two pups sat in silence, looking at each other as they ate their ice cream. Then Everest grew a mischievous smile.
"Hay, is that Chase over there," Everest said with a cheeky grin.
"What where," Marshal said franticly looking around.
Everest took this opportunity to dump the rest of her ice cream on Marshals head.
"Oh, if Chase tries to mess up our date I'll uh, whoa, son of a Husky that's cold," Marshal said, whipping around to find Everest on the ground dying with laughter.
Marshal flings the rest of his ice cream on Everest to get her back.
"Hay, you can't do that to me, I'm a girl." Everest said, still laughing.
"You started it," Marshal teased.
"Roar," Everest said as she lunged at Marshal.
The two began to wrestle with each other, laughing the whole time. They didn't care that people where watching them and the people didn't care ether, because they knew Marshal and Everest and decided to let them have the time of their lives. The two fought each other for a good long while until they were tired out. Marshal decided that it was time to head up to the cliff for the sunset. He helped Everest up into his fire truck and then he drove off towards the cliff.
"Aw, Marshy, thanks for this fun night," Everest said.
"Oh, it's not over yet," Marshal said.
"What do you mean," Everest asked, tilting her head.
"I have one last surprise for you," Marshal said with a wink.
Right at that moment they arrived at the cliff. Marshal and Everest walked to the edge and laid down on the soft grass. The view was breath taking, you could see everything for miles, and you could see the whole town of Adventure Bay. But the best part was the sun, setting bellow the shining ocean.
"Wow, I've seen this cliff so many times, but never like this, it's breath taking," Everest said.
"I've always wanted to take you up here at this time of day, I just needed a good excuse," Marshal said receiving a smack from Everest.
They continued to watch the beautiful sunset, until Everest noticed a fancy looking gun on Marshals waist.
"What's that you got there," Everest said, gesturing to the gun.
"Hm, oh my revolver, yeah, I paid a pretty good price for this thing. 1856, 22 caliber, black titanium barrel, with ivory handle, you know, rumor has it that this gun once belonged to the infamous outlaw Jesse James's dog, outlaw James," Marshal said, fingering the gun in his paw.
"What, you're messing with me," Everest said with shock.
"No I'm not and I can prove it," Marshal said flipping the gun around. "Look it has his initials, OJ, engraved in the handle."
Marshal shot a quick round into a nearby dirt mound.
"Wow, how much did you pay for that thing?" Everest asked with amazement.
"50,000 dollars, I bought it at an antique store and they had no idea what it was, then I found out that it belonged to Outlaw James and I looked up the value of such an artifact, and its actual value is more like 1.6 million dollars. Would you like to have a go," Marshal said.
"What, with a gun that expensive, no thanks, I'd be afraid of breaking it, maybe another time when you can teach me how to use it properly," Everest said.
"Okay, oh and when I said I had one more surprise for you, well I lied, I have one more," Marshal said with a cheeky grin.
Marshal walked over to a small mountain shrub and pulled out a very carefully crafted mountain wild flower bouquet with lavender blossoms entwined between the flowers.
"I decided to make this bouquet for the most beautiful pup I would ever see in my life and I can't think of anyone better then you Evey." Marshal said.
"Oh, Marshy, no, stop it no," Everest said, her face turning bright red.
"I mean it Evey, you are the most beautiful pup I have ever seen and no other pup will ever surpass your beauty." Marshal said.
Everest just sat there with her paws over her bright red face. Eventually though she took the flowers and gave Marshal the biggest hug ever. The two sat down to finish watching the sunset. Everest paw fell on Marshals paw; both pups gasped and pulled their paws back. The two looked at each other and smiled, they then put their paws back together. Everest leaned her head on Marshals shoulder and before too long was asleep. Marshal gently picked her up, despite her weight and gently set her down in his fire truck. Marshal then drove back to Jakes mountain, when he got there Jake was sitting on the front porch.
"Hay, Marshal, how was your," Jake started.
"Shh, Everest," Marshal whispered pointing to a sleeping Everest in the seat beside him.
"Oh, sorry, how was your date," Jake whispered.
"It was amazing; um could I carry Everest to her bed, please." Marshal asked.
"Are you sure, she's pretty heavy," Jake said.
"Oh yeah, my firefighter training requires me to lift 100 pounds, I can handle her weight." Marshal said.
"Okay, her room is the first room on the right up the stars." Jake said, taking his seat on the porch again.
"Thanks" Marshal said while picking Everest up without waking her.
Marshal carried her all the way up to her room and set her down gently on her pup bed. He looked at her for a minute, and then gave her a quick lick on her head.
"Good night Evey, I love you," Marshal whispered.
Marshal walked back to his fire truck. He thanked Jake for letting him date her and then he drove on home. But what Marshal didn't notice was the two evil eyes and one evil grin, shining in the dark of the night.
Wow, Chase has made some great progress on his recovery, and Marshal has made some great progress on his relationship with Everest, but wait, what were the two evil eyes and one evil grin shining in the dark, find out next week on Adventures of The PAW Patrol.
