[Inverness]

Bella was terrified that something would happen to Jamie because of her. Randall was looking for them both, and while it would be easy to just keep running as far as they could, she didn't know if she could survive it. France was scary. The travel would be even scarier. Taking a ship through the North Sea didn't seem exactly safe considering the lack of technology this time period had.

"Bella," Jamie's voice called out to her, breaking through her thoughts. She was standing at the window of the small cottage they were staying in outside of Inverness.

Bella turned and looked at Jamie. "Jamie…"

"What ails ye?" Jamie asked softly as he closed the door behind him and walked towards her.

"Sailing to France." She said simply and looked out the window again.

Jamie could understand the fear. "Aye, sailing is scary." He admitted. "I have sailed to France before. The trip is not as bad as ye think." He tried to reassure her.

Bella nodded and turned back to Jamie. "Jamie, do we have to run so far? We could…go elsewhere."

Jamie was silent, studying her. He could see the frown lines on her forehead and could tell how frightened she was about the entire situation. He hated that it had come to this. Fleeing from their home at Castle Leoch. He was to blame for her having to run. If she could clear her name, then she could stay in Inverness and live her life. That life would be without him, and the thought pained him. He had fallen so in love with her in such a short time. He didn't want to be without her, but he was willing to be without her if it meant that she was safe.

"I could turn myself in. Perhaps-"

"No, Jamie," Bella cut him off. "No. That's not an option. Jamie, we are married now. We took an oath to one another." She spun the small iron ring on her hand. "We'll go to France. When will be leave?"

"The waters are not suited for travel right now, we will have to keep to the smaller towns like this until the weather is permitting. We'll leave at the end of the month. My cousin can gain passage on his ship Marybeth, and we'll take her to France. France is an ally to Scotland. We will go to court, survive until the rebellion starts." Jamie relayed. "Only if-"

"Okay." Bella cut him off again. "Okay. France it is." She said blowing out a breath.

Jamie moved towards her, his hands resting at her hips before he pulled her into his strong embrace. "I love ye Bella. We'll get through this."

"I know," Bella murmured against his chest, tears threatening to spill over. She sighed and leaned back, looking up at him before his mouth covered hers, kissing her. Kissing Jamie always made her heart beat faster and the happiness she felt when with him, was everything she needed to continue with this plan that felt like it would be their end.

When the kiss broke, he looked down at her, brushing her hair back out of her face. He could see her reservations still heavy on her face. "My love….ye still are worried."

"What if something bad happens before we leave?"

"I won't let anythin' happen to ye. I promise." Jamie murmured and kissed her again lightly.

Bella had no choice but to believe in his words. She thought about the stones that she came through. They weren't too far away from them, and she wondered how the stones worked. If she could bring Jamie through them and maybe they could go to another time period? She mulled this over in her head, wondering if she would come off as sounding crazy if she told him about the stones.

She felt her stomach turn suddenly and nausea rolled. This was happening more frequently, and she wasn't sure what to do about it. She found herself moving away from Jamie quickly and rushing outside to empty the contents of her stomach.

Jamie frowned, worried about her suddenly becoming ill. He rubbed her back gently as she continued getting sick. Murtagh rode up on his horse and saw him swing down. "She's ill."

"Ill? Did she eat something bad?" Murtagh asked as he approached with a small satchel full of coin.

Bella leaned up and Jamie fished a handkerchief from his pouch on his hip and handed it to her so she could wipe her mouth. "No, I don't believe so. Thank you," she said as she sniffed, her eyes still watery.

"Hmm." Murtagh scratched his chin. "My sister got ill when she was carrying Jamie."

Jamie looked at Bella, standing back to look at her frame. She had left off her corset and was just wearing her dress without it. "Bella?"

Bella frowned. "No, I don't think so. I'm not sure how I would even know…" she murmured.

"Well, uh…"Murtagh shifted a little. "Ye know a woman has, things….every month."

Jamie smiled a little at his friend. "Murtagh, ye seem a bit uncomfortable."

Bella's face heated a little as she thought about this. "I…" when was the last time her period came. She thought back to before the stones. It felt like such a long time ago, but she had missed her period a few times she felt like at this point. "Oh no…" she murmured and moved back inside the cottage, trying to find paper.

Murtagh and Jamie followed her, both worried about her.

"Bella, love, what are ye looking for?"

Bella found paper and she started scribbling with the quill as she counted, making a make shift calendar.

Jamie looked over her shoulder at what she was doing, his brows knitted together as he stayed silent to give her time to work through whatever it was she was trying to do.

Bella looked at the paper. "This can't be right."

"What's wrong love?" Jamie asked gently.

Bella put a hand over her stomach, feeling a slight bulge, but it was hard to tell under all the layers of clothes. "Murtagh, privacy please?" She said as she started untying parts of her dress.

Murtagh didn't say a word as he quickly left.

Jamie frowned and helped get her out of her dress, until she was in her shift. She flattened her hands over her stomach and felt the bulge. "Bella, what are ye-"

"I'm pregnant," she said and looked at Jamie. "This can't be right."

"Well, we made love before I left for rents, it's possible-"

"Jamie, feel," She said, grabbing his hand and placing it to her stomach. He felt the bulge and happiness fill him.

"Bella, love, this is good news." Jamie said. "Yer pregnant my love."

Bella shook her head. "I'm too far along." She murmured.

Jamie wasn't sure he was following.

"Jamie. Carlisle…"

It suddenly clicked for Jamie. "Oh."

Bella moved away from Jamie and covered her face with her hands. This wasn't making sense. Jamie was the first time she went all the way with intercourse. She tried to think about everything. Retrace her memories of Carlisle. "Okay, it's winter now…" she murmured. "Carlisle and I came to Inverness in in in July…." She was talking to herself, trying to work through every moment. "He never…I don't understand." Carlisle had only ever stuck his tip inside her. She wasn't sure what all happened after he made her cum. Did he cum inside her? Were there other times? She thought about some mornings when she woke up wetter than normal. Did he do it to her while she was sleeping?

"Bella, love, I don't follow what yer saying right now. Are ye saying ye were pregnant before yer husband died? When did he die?" Jamie asked.

Bella didn't know how to even answer that question. How far along could she potentially be? She already had a small bulge, did that mean that she was far along? How did she not notice this? How could she be so stupid. Her period being gone for so long. Then again there were times she had skipped a period before Carlisle, before coming to Scotland. So was it really that abnormal? What if she was just reading into everything? She ran her hands over her stomach again. The bulge was firm and not soft like it would be if she was just bloated. Tears came to her eyes. How could this be happening?

"Oh love, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause ye pain. I won't ask about him again. I am sorry…"

"No. Um. He wasn't a good person," Bella sniffed and wiped at her face. "Oh God. This can't be happening. We have no doctors….or equipment." She felt fear run through her as she thought about bringing a baby into the world without medical intervention. She felt panic rise and she sobbed.

Jamie tried to comfort her, his arms coming around her to console her, but she moved away from him. "Bella…"

"I can't…I can't bring his baby into this world. This isn't how it's supposed to be. This isn't right." She sucked in a breath quickly, feeling light headed.

"Bella, love, it's going to be okay. I'm here now. Yer gonna be fine. It doesn't matter. The babe, I'll be it's da. It'll be okay." Jamie insisted.

Bella paused to look at Jamie, seeing how frightened he was right now at her state of despair. She knew that he only wanted to do what was best and care for her. How could se care for a child in this medieval world? Why didn't she think about this happening. "Jamie…"

"Bella, I promise, everything will be okay…" he murmured reassuringly.

"Jamie, I'm not from this time," she said and felt her heart constrict. "I came through the stones at Craigh na Dun." She whispered.

Jamie shook his head, unsure he heard her correctly. "Stones? Bella, I don't understand."

"I'm from the year 2024. Um. I was visiting the stones and I went through them. I don't know how it's even possible. But I um." She shook her head and looked down at her hands and she twisted the ring on her hand. "My husband got called away. We were supposed to go on the tour together. We had been in Scotland for a couple months already running away from a past life that…he was supposed to save me from, but I…I knew that I was trading one monster for another. At least Carlisle didn't beat me." She sniffed and then wiped her eyes. "I've known Carlisle all my life. Since I was a little girl. He did things to me then before I understood what was happening."

Jamie's mouth opened in shock and disgust. He didn't understand everything he was hearing, but hearing Bella tell him that Carlisle defiled her as a young girl made him feel a certain kind of rage.

"I was going to run away. I just had to figure it all out. I was going to get to France even then. I was supposed to disappear from there to another country and hopefully not be found. I was going to change my identity and start my life over. When I came through the stones…after Captain Randall tried…and you saved me, I figured out I had fallen through time and I was okay with that. Because that meant I did really escape," she sobbed a little. She felt like everything was so broken now with Jamie. The way he was looking at her. "I…I'm sorry."

Jamie was silent, watching her cry for everything that she had been through. He lifted a shaky hand and he pulled her closer to him, and he embraced her, stroking her back with his other hand while he kissed the top of her head. He felt tears threaten for himself and he pushed them away.

"It's okay. Yer safe now. I won't let anything happen to ya."

"Jamie…you don't believe me…" she pulled away to put a little distance between them.

"I do believe ye. What yer saying doesn't make sense, but I believe ye. Ye wouldn't lie to me, I trust ye."

"But I did lie. Carlisle isn't dead Jamie. He's just in 2024 while I'm here in 1743." Bella said, waving her hands around her.

Jamie nodded. "I know, but he isn't alive during this time. So it's the same thing."

"I rationalized it too. Jamie, god. I'm pregnant. With his child. He married me when we got to Scotland as his way to protect me. We never had sex. He just did things to me, but the last few times, he would…"

"I don't…I don't want to know…." Jamie said suddenly, the thought of another man filling her with their seed wasn't appealing or helping his hatred for her husband. "I love ye. Bella, despite how ye got here, or what happened with him. I am here now. I am yer husband in this time."

Bella's lip quivered as she tried to force her emotion back. "Jamie, I'm scared. In my time we have hospitals and doctors and medicine. I don't do well with pain. I can't…I can't do this."

"Okay. Then we get ye to the stones. Ye go back to yer time and ye run like ye said. Get to France in yer time." Jamie hated that he even said the words out loud.

Bella shook her head, her eyes widening. "I can't leave you. Jamie, I can't be without you. That can't happen either."

"Bella, if yer time has what it needs to make ye safe. So our child can be safe. Yes, this is our child." Jamie's hands went to her again, placing them over her belly. "I don't care. I love ye. Yer safety is the most important thing and I will be damned if I let anything hurt ye."

"Jamie…." Bella murmured. "What if he finds me? What if he finds me and I can't escape?" She murmured.

Jamie swallowed. "I'll go with."

"How can you? I don't even know how the stones work. I don't' know how I even got here. It can't be as simple as touching the stones." Bella said.

Murtagh walked in then. "It isn't." He sighed. "I'm sorry I wasn't trying to overhear, but I did."

Bella frowned, looking at Murtagh. "Murtagh…."

"Ye need gemstones. I'll fetch them."

"Murtagh? How…how do you know?"

"I've met other time travelers. She's not the first lass to come through the stones and likely won't be the last." Murtagh said. "Jamie…ye will be free from Randall if ye go with her."

"What about the rebellion?" Bella asked. "What about your sister? What about your uncles?"

"That doesn't matter." Jamie said. "I'm coming with ye to protect ye from him."

Bella sniffed and looked at Murtagh. "Murtagh…thank you."

"Don't mention it." Murtagh grumbled and left them standing in the cottage.

Tears continued to fall down Bella's face as she looked at Jamie. "Jamie…"

"We're gonna be okay. I promise." He said and kissed her.
