Nightmares. Valkai screams as she wakes in the middle of the night, for how many times now, she can't recall. Piercing yellow eyes lingers in her conscience no matter how hard she tries to shrug off the exhaustion and dread. Not too long until her handler "joan" comes in her room, startled and worried.
"Nightmares again?" She asks as she enters the room and closes the door.
"Y-yeah... the usual. Don't you worry about me, go get some rest" Valkai replied as she gives a slight smile, fighting hard to maintain its form as it relentlessly wanted to turn into a frown.
"Okay, but you need to get some rest too. I'm right next door if you need anything, okay pard?"
Reluctantly, Joan left the room to go back to sleep
As Joan left, the smile that had been there, turned into a frown. Why and for what reason is she getting these nightmares, what being was she seeing in them to cause so much dread in her every waking moment.
As the night continues with no sleep to be had, Valkai went into her office instead to pass the time- well.. more like distract herself from the nightmares. She unbundled a sack from the corner of the room to reveal the things and keepsake that she has brought from home, the old world. Dried up yukumo herbs, a poogie doll that had once been her pride and joy, and also... Kai's journal.
A journal that was left behind by her grandmother before she dissapeared. She had always kept it, but never opened it. She had always refrained from opening it, believing that Kai would have wanted to keep it private. But none the less she kept it as a memento of her grandmother, though tonight something within her is urging for the journal to be opened. She gave in, thinking that reading her grandmother's written words will help her distract herself. As she opened the first page, dread fills the air. Drawn on the first page were the eyes she knew ever so well. Soul burning eyes leered at her through the pages, the pressure was enough to make her want to vomit. As she flipped through the pages she realized that this journal was not of valiant stories or personal daily writing. This was a journal of a person who little by little lost her sanity, this was reflected by the writing of which grew unintelligible with every turn of the page. She can't read any words written, all but the last words of the journal.
It read: "That thing must not return. I will find it to end it, these nightmares too. Please don't come looking for me."
Valkai felt sick. Whether it be to the fact that her grandmother lost herself through the years, suffering in silence, or that she went to look for this monster and never came back. Her eyes welled up with tears as she went out to get some air.
As Seliana's freezing temperature numbs her body, and grief turns to curiosity, she heads to the library to research the monster that defeated her grandmother. She searched and searched til the sun rose.
"No records of anything?" She mumbled to herself.
"Why do you look so distraught, sapphire star?" A curious voice snaps her out of her daze.
As she turns around, the brilliant third fleet commander meets her gaze
"Third fleet commander!" She yelled in surprise. "What brought you here?"
"Well i wanted to get some air after working on a paper for 2 days straight, and it brought me here. So you haven't answered my inquiries, i hope I'm not intruding." She says with a teasing smirk on her face
"Ah its nothing at all, I was just researching about a monster, but unfortunately we seem to not have a record of it" valkai coyly replies.
"Ohh, I'm afraid there's not a single missing record of any monster, other than those we have not yet discovered, or those that belong in a fairy tale my dear." The commander replied, with pride in her voice.
"What exactly is the monster called?" She added, curiosity replacing the prideful tone she had
"The name was never mentioned to me, but i believe it was called The blazing black dragon" Valkai, says.
As the name echoed throughout the library, pressured filled every corner of the cold space. No humans were present, but all the wyvernians looked at valkai in horror of the title spoken.
"Where did you learn of that title?" The once proud voice of the 3rd fleet commander, turned into a whisper.
Oblivious to the weary eyes focused on her she replied "my grandmother fought it, and to my knowledge repelled it before i was born."
"You're Kai's grandkid?.." She murmured.
After what felt like hours, the silence broke.
"Dear, there are some things that the world just chooses to forget. For one, the title you just spoke of is taboo. And due to the close to none sightings and research about that monster, the guild chose to destroy the records. I'm sorry but you should give up on trying to find information about it"
as the third fleet commander turns to leave
"Wait, how did you know my grandmother?" Valkai asked
"It was many moons ago, though time for us is different. I visited yukumo for a bit. That's all it is.." she replied, of which valkai felt weight in her words.
As the morning comes and goes Valkai sat and thought of the information she just recieved. As well as looking through the journal once again.
Seeing no further information to be gained from the journal; she closed it. At the same time she felt a pocket in the back cover, investigating it she discovered a small shard, small enough to be placed on top of her palm.
It was a scale, as dark as obsidian, nearly purple exposed to light. As the scale glows in an interval, she felt power emanating from it. Somehow it felt hot and cold, but also felt as if it tingles her hand. She gasped and dropped the scale as she, once again saw the eyes peering at her.
"This scale is of that monster... I'm sure of it" she said, weakness in her voice.
As night approaches Valkai got ready to sleep, expecting nightmares that would once again rip her away from her much needed rest. Instead there were no nightmares, just dreams of all she's been through. From arriving in the new world to defeating safi'jiiva. She should have been more proud of her accomplishments but as to why she isnt? She cannot tell.
Suddenly she was ripped away from her rest, not by nightmares but by her handler.
"We've got a situation pard, we have to go!" She hastily said to wake Valkai quickly
As they left the house she noticed the light that filled the sky, what once was a cloudy everyday sky in seliana, now glowed of red with streaks of lightning illuminating the chaotic heavens. On the horizon storms of unimaginable magnitude are approaching their location.
She hurried to the conference where the leaders are already discussing the current situation. The whole village was frantic to say the least, no one knew what was happening.
"Commander brief me please" Valkai requested
"I'm sorry but there's no information yet to brief, sapphire star. Stay here we need you when we are going to formulate a plan" the commander spoke, not making eye contact in his haste to do his tasks
Valkai and Joan nodded in agreement and helped whomever they can in the chaos.
The commotion never seems to have no end, until the ancient wyverians if the forest along with hunters, handlers and wyverians of Astera arrived, they looked as if they had been through hell and back. They were swiftly given blankets and a hot fire so that they may rest. It is then they told why they had to seek refuge in seliana. For astera and the ancient forest was burnt to the ground. The forest fires spread quicker than the frenzy virus, and the seas rose as if it hungers for land.
Listening to their stories, Valkai recalled the tales from her mother of the calamity that had hit yukumo all those years ago, the one believed to have been brought by the monster she longed to face.
"Commander! I seek council, right now!" Valkai yelled as everyone looked at her in curiosity. Though she could also tell the fear that is so evidently seen in everyone's eyes.
The commander nodded in agreement as he ordered the council members to join together for a meeting. Everyone looked to their sapphire star to find an explanation for the calamity they are facing. For even a child could see that this is not a natural disaster.
All eyes followed Valkai as she walked to the council room. Through all the adrenaline she had not felt the freezing cold air of seliana, as her body began to shiver out of her control, Joan draped a blanket over her.
"It's okay pard, go ahead to the council. I'll wake yen up and bring your gear. Goodluck!" she reassured Valkai that she always has her back.
The talk starts as every hunter listens to what the council plans. They must be ready to act accordingly with haste to ensure the success of whatever task they are ordered.
"Valkai, What is it that you want to say?" The commander asks, officially starting the council.
"I believe we are dealing with a calamity similar to what happened to yukumo" Valkai suggested, with determination in her eyes. Something inside her is saying that it is true, wether she woould like it to be true or not.
"You can't be suggesting..." a familiar voice can be heard from within the crowd.
"That A black dragon had come to the new world" she said as the third fleet commander emerges from the crowd.
"We had to escape from the highlands due to the storms. But i am not so bold as to assume that an embodiment of calamity has come" she added.
"Please third fleet commander, you know only something as powerful as that can make these events happen. We must assume the worst." Valkai pleaded, hoping to not divide the crowd in what must be done
But to no avail. The third fleet commander just stared in denial, Until..
"You were there weren't you?" Said, Valkai
"What?"
"You were there when the misty peaks were engulfed in fire, and the deserted isle was sunk by the sea" Valkai accused.
"Wh- how did you come up with that?!" The third fleet commander roared
"I've seen old paintings hidden in my old house.. Though I wasnt sure at first, now i believe that one of the portraits was of you... Even old keepsakes and trinkets, kind of like what you're wearing right now. I know this is a very dire situation, but that is all the more reason to keep our heads straight." Valkai sentimentally shared.
"I- I see." With a cold whisper she joined the council around the table.
"It's a matter of days long past, with memories filled with bad and good. Forgive me for giving in to personal feelings, but I will admit that these happenings do look disturbingly similar to that of the yukumo event" As she frowned with the recollection of such terror
Valkai nodded with a smile as she grasped the third fleet commanders shoulders in assurance.
"What black dragon are we facing supposedly? Can we kill it?" The commander spoke with confidence that is enough to inspire hundreds.
The third fleet commander stepped forward. "Alatreon"
It is then that the hope everyone had, turned to confusion and fear. Most recognize the name from the legends, the members of the first fleet were adults when the legends and rumors started.
"HA! So your grandmother faced a black dragon and lived to tell the tale? I see where you got your talent kid!" A loud voice boomed from the back of the council room
"Admiral!?" Exclaimed Valkai.
Who wouldn't notice a dude as big as him sneak into the room
"Actually I might have thought that we were facing that legendary beast. That's why I had my men search the elders recess and the everstream but to no avail. Nothing was sighted. I'm all out of ideas" the Admiral regrettably said.
It is then that the third fleet commander recalled a part of the tale. "From the source of discord did it sleep, in the eye of the storm it lays at rest, for it dreads the company of any other living things" she murmured, which was heard by Valkai
Valkai stared at what seemingly is the source of the red skies, past the sea, in the direction of the guiding lands.
"The secluded valley..." she whispered
"Commander! It might be in safi'jiiva's lair!" Valkai shouted with resolve in her trembling voice.
"Is killing it the only way to stop this calamity? The storms are closing in quick, but I don't want to lose anyone for the sake of saving what we have here" the commander said, with a hint of weakness in his voice.
"Yes, I'm sure the guild will understand, we can still flee. If we leave everything behind we'll make it" the Tracker suggested.
"That would be wise, but still leaving all of our work here. It pains me to see it destroyed" the seeker inquired.
"I'll go"
To the surprise of all the hunters and council members alike, Valkai volunteered to fight the threat where no other soul brave enough to even suggest being in a team to fight it.
The murmuring started, some talks consisted of optimistic opinions while others where pessimistic. They had faith in their sapphire star, but a larger than life monster, that is inscribed in legends for its might, was something far bigger than anyone there at that moment. And Valkai knew that, still she insists, this was her purpose for joining the commission, a looming shadow from her past that she had to face.
"I will face Alatreon. If I could not kill or repel it, let me atleast buy you some time.. keeping it busy might slow down the approach of the storms right? It's atleast worth a try." Valkai solemnly said. She knew what awaits her in that valley, possibly the same fate that her grandmother faced. But it will not break her resolve, she loved this commission, through a couple of years, this was her family. And she would not see that her family's work be wasted.
"Are you mad!? No one is sacrificing themselves on my command you hear me? We will flee!" The commander's voice is heard throughout seliana.
"I disagree. I know she can do it, and once she is set to do one thing, i know she will see it through. She is our sapphire star-"
a voice in the crowd once again said
Emerging from the crowd is Joan carrying Valkai's armor and weapons made from the red dragon, along with Yen.
"-she is my partner" she added, determination in her heart keeps it from breaking. She has faith that her partner can do it, but now without a cost.
"Has she not pulled through overwhelming odds before? Does no one trust her even after all she has done? Those who believe in her please join me" she hoped that everyone would support the decision, not of a selfish desire, but they had hope that Valkai: the symbol of the commission can best the legendary black dragon.
One by one every hunter handler and wyverian went behind the handler, in protest to the commander's decision. They cheered in unison.
"... so be it, I have learned my lesson in underestimating you. Go forth, but come back to us in one piece, and with Alatreon's corpse in tow." Reluctantly, the commander ordered, he had to steel himself to send Valkai to her death.
"Now, Get to work! I want everyone to start packing, leave everything that is of no particular value to you! We must not let Valkai's efforts to be in vain!" The commander ordered
A loud cheer was the reply to the task they are given, and in an instant everyone moved in unison like ants.
"Be careful kid, may the sapphire star light your way" with a slap on the shoulder, the admiral went on his way to help evacuate.
As Valkai started gearing up she saw Yen staring at the distant source of discord.
"Yen, I'm not so selfish as to force you to fight with me... we could dissolve the contract right here, right now. But if you can, I would surely love it if you would fight with me one last time."
Yen considered the offer, in her eyes this is certain death. And if she was to trust her felyne instincts she would surely accept the offer. But loyalty overrides her fear, she will not let her contractor- no, her dear friend to fight alone. She put on her helmet in defiance to the offer, which made Valkai smile wider than anything in a while.
"Yknow I'm coming too right pard?" Joan asked in a jest-ful tone, as if the pressure of the whole situation isn't felt by her.
"I know I can't change your mind" Valkai knowingly smiled, as if to say thanks to her handler who has been with her from the start.
"You betcha" she replied and hurriedly packed their supplies.
-a few minutes later, In the guiding lands-
Valkai detached from her wing-drake as she deemed it close enough to assess the area.
The air felt thicker, and the atmosphere distorted as she came closer.
At the mouth of the chasm; the entrance leading to the secluded valley, elements swirling with vigor, flush out like a breath of a mighty dragon. One does not need to be superhuman to sense that something is terribly wrong. Within the chasm, the sound of crackling flame, shattering ice, gushing water, and the booming thunder harmonizes itself into a song of death that can be akin to the sound of an organ, passionately playing within a scarcely furnished room. The vibrations feel as if it is enough to split the mountains surrounding this entrance.
As Valkai stood and peered into this abyss filled with surging elemental fury, she thought back on all the accomplishments she has made. All of the feats she has accomplished, had led up to this point: the fateful encounter with the beast that brought armageddon wherever it roamed. With a last glance to Joan, She quickly clutched at a commission wingdrake to take her to the heart of this cursed place. Descending the chasm, she felt the power of the elements gradually grow into the dangerous levels. The fleeting embers were no more, what replaced them were roaring flames. The snowflakes turned to hail, and the static grew into rock splitting lightning.
As the secluded valley comes into view, Valkai notices that it is now covered in ice. It was as if Velkhana had made a home for herself in this hidden place. Frost in the air, hurts her lungs as she breathes heavily, dread rushing through every fiber of her being.
Suddenly, a hurricane of wind; stronger than any normal wind would be. The wing drake struggles to maintain a straight path in order to not crash into the jagged rocks below. As the drake slowly retained control of its flight, it appeared.
An ancient dragon of disaster, it flew past as if Valkai was just another stone by the roadside, it had its eyes set unto another target. As the wingdrake gave in to the other worldly turbulence caused by the flight of the black dragon. Itself and Valkai plummeted to the valley below.
Landing safely, Valkai looked around to regain her bearings, the secluded valley, now covered in ice, looked elegant yet deadly at the same time.
Alatreon flew past, sending ice shards with every stroke of its powerful wings, it burned every remnants of safi'jiiva as if it were burning down the home of pests, sending powerful blasts of combined elements, it decimated the place the red dragon once called home. The once snow ridden valley, now turned into a hellscape of fire and ruin. Elements filled the air almost making it unbearable to breathe.
It landed down and looked around as if to admire its work like a twisted art piece. It is then that Valkai got a good look at the creature. It's scales reversed, jagged and sharp like knives, its horns: violent in design, power courses through this dragon's blood as the once blue scales now turned an infernal red.
Their eyes met. Alatreon looked at Valkai in curiosity, as if to question the wit of the being infront of it. Piercing eyes looked straight through Valkai, the eyes that were haunting her in the nightmares, now real and looks as if it's judging her every move.
This was it, her goal. She will be facing the beast her grandmother once faced, now if she will live to tell the tale as Kai had, only fate can tell. The black dragon let out a mighty roar to signify the dance of death that is about to commence.
Valk drew her sword with dexterity, as Alatreon charged at her, red lightning surrounding the obsidian dragon like a cocoon of pure rage and power. It was fast. Faster than any monster she has faced so far, in less than a second Alatreon had already hit her, sending her flying to the unforgiving ground. Standing up, she readied herself for another charge. But it never came. Alatreon horns burst in electricity as it sneered at valkai. Suddenly, static filled the ground on which she was standing on, she quickly dodged to evade death. A powerful blast of lightning struck the ground she was once on half a second ago. If she had been a little late, that would've been the end. Seeing as the monster was calculating and smart, being defensive will only prolong the inevitable defeat she will suffer. Charging forward Valkai awakened the dormant dragon blood within her armor and weapons, causing it to glow and transform into an intricate armor filled with energy and might.
Alatreon saw the attack coming and quickly stood up in its hind legs, eager to crush the valkai with its immense weight. Valkai had perfected the art of the longsword, before she was crushed, as quick as the lightning that alatreon harnessed, she stepped back in an elegant motion, quickly repositioning herself elegantly for a counter attack aimed straight at alatreon's forelimbs. The attack struck the black dragon, deeply embedding the ornately designed blade with an upward motion. Alatreon, enraged by the pain it had just endured raised its right limb to swipe at Valkai, it would have been fatal, if not for the fluid motion of a roundslash barely getting valkai out of harms way.
Fire and dragon energy flowed from Alatreon's mouth, the dragon had pride in it's power. It will not let a mere mortal think that it stood a chance against it, it reared its head to send a powerful blast of fire and dragon, the energy embedding itself into the ground in a circular shape. Valkai, confused at the attack that seemed to have missed her, tried to attack Alatreon's horns which was left open. The ground rumbled as an it exploded from underneath her. Pain surged throughout her body as she was sent flying by the burst of elements, it was looking dire. Alatreon was stronger than anything she had faced in the many years she had joined the guild. Wounded, Valkai looked into the black dragon's eyes, as it stared back in challenge, Valkai drew a smile, knowing there are no words to be exchanged in this fight to the death, only one may come out alive. Valkai never did break her promises, she had to go back to her fellow hunters; to her family.
She had to find a way to disrupt Alatreon's elements, she would have to do so in order to have a chance of defeating the beast. She scanned the dragon from head to toe as Alatreon's mouth started emitting mist of frost. As Valkai readied herself for blasts of violent ice, Alatreon calmly walked a few steps forward and gently spread the fine powder, which then turned into a surge of fine snow heading fast in her direction. She knew right away this attack was not like the others, it almost looked inviting, as if it was a cold embrace that would swiftly deliver you to your death. Thinking fast Valkai ran as far as she can to avoid the incoming snowstorm, it is then she noticed that Alatreon's horns were now coated in the same mist as the ice the dragon is using.
"The horns" she murmured to herself.
"Yen, I will keep it busy. Ready your weapons for a ranged attack" she ordered. A plan in mind is better than having nothing at all she thought.
Quickly veering past the snowstorm, Valkai charged Alatreon with all her might, swinging her blade vigorously, with each complete set of attacks she landed, her weapons grew sharper and hungrier for blood. Alatreon, seething with rage, started tensing its body for an attack unavoidable at close range. Sensing the danger Valkai quickly sheathed her blade, to run as far as she could, a moment later and Alatreon exploded in dragon energy, everything within range was decimated by this powerful attack. It's eyes now glow of crimson, it's strength amplified. It had been so long since it felt the thrill of battle, and surely it will enjoy thia fight. Stretching its wings, hurricanes came from every stroke. It took flight, showing agility on the air that would make an Astalos jealous. Surging in dragon energy, it began charging elemental attacks at a quicker rate. Elements now littered the battlefield as Alatreon relentlessly fired flame, water, ice and lightning. Valkai is growing tired by the second, Alatreon with it's seemingly infinite endurance is besting her, and she knows it. It would only be a matter of time until her plan is complete, she has to buy enough time for Yen to gather eveything they can in order for their plan to work, and she is determined to hold out until then
-A few hours of continuous exchange of devastating attacks from both conbatants later-
The sound of a horn was heard, Valkai looked to the source of the horn, only to see Yen with her ballista at the ready and aimed at Alatreon. Valkai nodded to signal Yen to start the attack, in an instant the ever so loyal palico fired a barrage of elemental arrows aimed directly at Alatreon's horns. The blazing black dragon was smart, it saw the interaction and was ready to counter it, until a blinding light suddenly burned its vision, flash pods were fired by Valkai in order to get the opening that they needed. Barrage of arrows hits Alatreon's horns, elemental components cause a disruption within Alatreon's spires causing it to become unstable grounding the great dragon with a mighty roar. The elements around Alatreon seem to disperse as he falls to the ground in pain, flailing like any common beast that is exposed to a painful attack. Seeing the opening Valkai rushed to the dragon's head, piercing it and quickly launching herself upward. The tables have turned, the great dragon helplessly struggled on the ground as Valkai soar into the skies, she readied her sword to slash downward, a devastating attack aimed directly at Alatreon's horns. The Helmbreaker cleaves one of the dragons horns in half, a shockwave of combined elements blasts both human and dragon apart.
Once the dust settled, the two adversaries looked at each other, both looked as if they were in no condition to fight. Alatreon had underestimated the hunter before it, and it paid the price by losing one of it's horns. Valkai, though tired was proud of what she accomplished, if she were to fall now, she will be relieved that she had managed to buy enough time for her peers to escape. Alatreon, agitated by the events that unfolded, surges every element it has power over within its body, as well as the atmosphere around it. Blinded by rage, it starts combining all of the elements, causing a great disruption within the whole valley. Vision was hazed, light was fractured, and sound was muffled. His next attack will be the judgement that his foes will face, it is a devastating attack of pure elemental prowess, It stared at Valkai with eyes bloodshot, anticipating and calculating of it's opponents next move.
She felt a chill, everything within the valley was distorted. It was as if all her senses were failing. Her eyes blurred, mirages started to appear around Alatreon, which looked like a haze of smoke from heat while at the same time it looked like mist from the coldest ice. Sound left the world, as white noise replaced every sound in existence within this valley.
Valkai stepped back, her instincts telling her that there is no surviving this attack. But still, she stood her ground. If this was how she went out, there is nothing to do but accept it. There was no running away from an attack of this magnitude.
In one swift motion, Alatreon leapt up into the air and spread his wings. At that moment every stored energy within its body, to the very valley they are standing on, Emitted an elemental surge of pure power. There were no force that would blow someone away, but it felt as if the warm yet cold embrace was prying your soul from your body. Valkai tries to hold on, as she felt her conciousness fading. Flame spread through the air, burning every speck of dust, ice formed and shattered as quickly as they appeared, and lightning struck every inch of the arena. Just as it seems to be the end for Valkai, Yen came out of her burrow, using the vigorwasp gel that she had saved up for so long, covered her contractor with it, shielding her from the elements for the time being, while also rejuvenating her. At that moment, valkai opened her eyes to see Yen, smiling at her in the exposure of the Escaton's judgement. She quickly mouthed her farewell to her friend. As she was blown away by the final surge of elements.
Not being able to do anything, Valkai grit her teeth from within the goo that was being melted at a fast rate, Tears welled up in her eyes. As the goo fully dissolves, she fell to her knees in grief but composed herself so she may not fall into a blind rage. Alatreon, severely weakened by his injuries, as well as using most of his strength to pull of that attack. Reared up to roar a battlecry it had not did in decades. In retaliation, Valkai also shouted, determined to bring the dragon down.
Both tired and injured, the dance of death continued, as the music of the ballroom long since passed its crescendo, the dance was signaled to come to an end. Blow after blow they traded, as both were on their last straw, Valkai sheathed her blade one last time, not behind her but to her side in a stance taught to her by her mentors. Alatreon raised his whole body, readying one last slam with all his strength. The two combatants crossed blades, at the moment no person would be able to tell who won. After a few seconds of silence, Alatreon fell to the ground from which an audible last gasp of air can be heard. Valkai, shortly after raising her fist to the air in celebration, collapsed.
In her fading conscience she heard the familiar voice of joan, and multiple silhouettes of figures clutched to wingdrakes caused by the light entering the chasm's entrance.
In her slumber there were no nightmares, the eyes that had tormented her for the last few weeks were never seen again.
She awoke in a dimly lit room, her body ached from the physical damage, but it was not as terrible as the mental damage she fears the black dragon might have inflicted on her, just as it did to Kai. On her bedside sat Joan, who was sleeping on her chair. Not wanting to wake her up, Valkai stood up and started looking for Yen, hoping that somehow, she survived.
But it was false hope. She cried and cried until there were no tears left.
A few days later, the guild leaders embarked to the new world to award Valkai with tokens of valor and a proof of a hero. But there was no happiness to be found.
"So that hell was what you had to face alone to protect the ones you care for? And even when all was said and done, ypu were still able to smile and start a family? I'm afraid I could never catch up to you, kai" she murmurs to herself.
The black dragon may be dead, but its spirit still surely lives within Valkai's mind. In the end she achieved her goal, In the end she found answers to the mysteries that had troubled her since she was young.
She needed rest, and after all that's happened, it looks like she will be able to return home; to yukumo, at least temporarily. The thought of going home to see her family and friends, to enjoy her hometown's magnificent hotsprings and teas, did put a smile on her face.
