Hiccup was currently sitting alone at the Blacksmith shop. He was trying to figure everything out. With his Hybrid abilities to turn into a dragon, maybe he could help make a difference in the way they are treated amongst Vikings. But he also knows the people. They are stubborn and wouldn't change willingly. Something big would have to happen or occur to then change their ways.
And then there was his feelings. He was starting to fall for Luna. This was something that he didn't know he could feel for a dragon. Would that be something that could be possible? A Viking and a dragon? He was also a Hybrid, so he was able to be a dragon. But could he really settle down with a dragon? Was that something that is even possible? But Luna is actually able to change and transform back and forth from dragon and human as well. Could they really make this relationship work? Does Luna even feel the same way about him that he does for her?
Hiccup was lying against the desk as she was unable to go back until he could figure out his feelings. Yet again, he ended up finding himself sketching Luna in his books. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get her out of his mind. He sketched her dragon form in various positions from resting to sitting and perched up on a rock looking at the moon. And he also made a few that used her human form, and even a few that showed half of her dragon form and the other half her human form. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get her out of his mind.
Then the door opened, causing Hiccup to jump when he saw that it was Stoick. "Dad! You're back!" He immediately started to shove the sketches off the desk so his dad didn't see them. "Gobber's not here, so..."
Stoick sternly eyed Hiccup down, which made him afraid of what he was going to say. "I know. I came looking for you."
Hiccup was scared to hear that. "You did?"
Stoick only nodded as he stood over his son, making him feel small. "You've been keeping secrets."
Hiccup could feel his heart pounding, and had to force himself to stop from transforming by accident. "I... have?"
"Just how long did you think you could hide it from me?" Stoick asked.
Hiccup was afraid to hear he learned about either his dragon transformation or his secret dragon friend. "I don't know what you're..."
"Nothing happens on this island without me hearing about it," Stoick stated with a stern tone.
Hiccup felt that the gig was up now. "Oh?"
Stoick then leaned over and stood over his son even more. "So. Let's talk about that dragon."
Hiccup was afraid now, seeing his dad must know about Luna. "Oh, gods. Dad, I'm so sorry. I was going to tell you." That wasn't entirely true, he would take this to his grave if he could. "I just didn't know how to-" Then Stoick started to laugh, causing Hiccup to become confused. "You're not... upset?"
Stoick seemed confused to hear that and stopped laughing. "What?! I was hoping for this!"
Hiccup now went from worried to confused. "Uh... you were?"
"And believe me, it only gets better!" Stoick proclaimed as he became thrilled. "Just wait 'till you spill a Nadder's guts for the first time! And mount your first Gronckle head on a spear! WHAT A FEELING!" He gave Hiccup a playful shove, sending him into a basket for supplies. "You really had me going there, son! All those years of the worst Viking Berk has ever seen!" Hiccup got out of the basket easily due to his newfound dragon strength, which Stoick seemed too thrilled to notice. "Odin, it was rough! I almost gave up on you! And all the while, you were holding out on me! OH, THOR ALMIGHTY! Ah." He then took a seat, seemingly wanting to go further. "With you doing so well in the ring, we finally have something to talk about."
The room then lapsed into an uncomfortable silence. Hiccup found himself at a loss for words, unable to share the recent events with his father. He couldn't disclose his conversations with a dragon, nor the friendship he had formed, and especially not the revelation that he was a Hybrid (yeah, he and Luna are sticking with that phrase). Revealing too much risked everything, particularly his bond with Luna. He didn't know how he felt about her yet or how she felt about him, and he wanted to keep her safe no matter what.
Stoick then found a way to break the silence. "Oh, I... brought you something. To keep you safe in the ring." Stoick holds up a Viking helmet and gives it to Hiccup.
"Wow. Thanks." Hiccup said as he took the helmet and caressed it.
"Your mother would've wanted you to have it. It's half of her breastplate." Stoick informed him, tapping his own helmet. "Matching set. Keeps her close, y'know?" Hiccup never heard much about his mother and was surprised to hear his dad talk about her. "Wear it proudly. You deserve it. You've held up your end of the deal."
Hiccup was getting a lot uncomfortable in this and fake yawn. "I should really get to bed."
"Yes! Good! Okay. Good talk."
"See you back at the house. We should do this again."
"I'm great."
"Thanks for stopping by."
"Glad I stopped by, I hope you uh, like the hat."
"And for the... the breast hat."
Stoick then headed for the door. Well, uh... good night."
"Oh, and uh, Dad, I don't know if you heard about her, but I could someone. Her name is Luna and she had nowhere to stay." Hiccup explained.
"Oh, I was told by Gobber," Stoick assured him. "I am proud of you for helping her."
Stoick then leaves the room awkwardly, leaving Hiccup looking more burdened than ever. He couldn't tell his dad about what happened. He could never know. But how long could he keep these secrets? He's housing a dragon. There's no telling how long he could keep Luna a secret like this.
As Luna dozed in Hiccup's room, her dragon senses jolted her awake with the premonition of the Queen's impending hunt. Alarmed, she silently slipped out of the window and stealthily ventured into the woods. Taking care to ensure her solitude, Luna shifted back into her formidable dragon form and soared towards the Nest.
Once there, she witnessed how the Queen relentlessly exploited her control over the dragons to satisfy her hunger. Searching for her ally, Luna spotted the Flame Skin (Nightmare), recalling all the information she had previously gleaned from this dragon. She flew her way over and landed as she approached her friend.
"Flame Skin," Luna murmured, inching closer. The sight of her exhaustion and evident hunger struck Luna with a mix of shock and concern.
"Shadeseeker." Flame Skin was happy to see her. "Are you alright?"
"I should ask you that," Luna said as she approached her friend, trying to comfort her. "You seem hungry."
"The Queen." Flame Skin said as she looked down to the pit. "She has begun to take more of our food. I saw what she did to a few of the families who couldn't feed her enough." She warned Luna in worry. "She said that if we don't give her enough food...our young will become her food."
Luna looked down to the pit and grew concerned and afraid at the idea that more of their young could be eaten and killed. She needed to tell Hiccup everything. He needed to know what was going on and hope that he was ready to help save them.
"The Morph you found." Flame Skin whispered. "Have you trained him?"
"Yes." Luna nodded as she wondered if Hiccup was ready. "He...he has grown and began to learn to understand his abilities, but...I don't know if he is ready for this."
Flame Skin then sensed something different about Luna and smelled the air around her. "Have... have you taken the young Morph as your Mate?"
Luna was shocked to hear that from her friend. "What?"
"I smell his scent on you. I smell your pheromones blossoming." Flame Skin explained. "Is he now your mate?"
"No!" Luna whispered but then started to question it. "No? No. He... he's a human." She didn't know if a relationship like that would work. "I'm a... a dragon. We're not... it isn't possible."
"Is that how he feels?" Flame Skin asks.
Luna wasn't sure how to respond as she didn't know how Hiccup felt for her like that. She did feel...love for him? But she didn't know if Hiccup could see her as anything more than a dragon. That was something she needed to figure out later. Hiccup needed to learn everything. It was time he learned why dragons kept attacking his kind. And maybe they can put an end to it.
The next day, Hiccup was a little concerned when he saw there was no sign of Luna. He figured it was some dragon thing and left it at that since he could easily make up an excuse and say it was just she took a walk through the woods in the morning. It was a good enough excuse to keep people from questioning, and it gave her time to come back.
Right now he was going through training with him going up against Astrid with the Gronckle. He was hiding behind the barricade with Astrid as he saw his father and most of the village was here to see this moment. The Gronckle was flying around searching for Astrid, after their previous encounters Hiccup and the Gronckle have both grown a likeness for one another. They were brief moments, but the Gronckle was growing a liking to him and she would easily go after the other kids rather than Hiccup and would go for him to end things.
Yeah, turns out the Gronckle was a girl, that was something that Hiccup was surprised to learn. They had the Gronckle listed as a boy, and learning it was a she was something he wasn't sure what to do. He just needed to make sure he didn't lead on to the others since they weren't aware of it.
Hiccup fixed the helmet on his head, trying to make his father happy. He then looked up and saw the Gronckle making its rounds around the arena looking for Astrid. The same Astrid who yanked Hiccup's shield to show how serious she was.
"Stay out of my way!" Astrid warns him. "I'm winning this thing."
"Please, by all means." Hiccup said.
He then stood up and looked to see Stoick was there watching everything. He locks eyes with Hiccup, giving him a nod of encouragement. Hiccup adjusts his new helmet and forces a half-hearted smile. He looked over to the Gronckle and knew he couldn't hurt it, especially when the Gronckle took a look at him and grew excited. Astrid was still sneaking around closing in fast on the dragon.
"Hello!" Gronckle cried as she plopped down aside Hiccup in glee, expecting to get a scratch like last time. "Oh, I'm so happy to see you! There's a spot I've been trying to reach and I need it itched."
Hiccup rolled his eyes and saw nobody was able to see him. He quickly began to scratch the spot and the Gronckle began to watch the dragon become overwhelmed by the feeling.
Astrid catches her breath behind a barrier. She scowls, focused, and determined. "This time. This time for sure."
With a fierce battle cry she leaps from cover, axe cocked to throw. And as she clears the barriers, she sees that Hiccup has already laid the Gronckle out. It was relieved by the feeling of getting the area scratched and played its part in making it look like Hiccup took it out to avoid getting hurt. Hiccup shrugs when he saw Astrid, as unhappy with the situation as she is.
"AaaaaaaauGGGGGHHHHHHHH!" Astrid cried in anger. "No! No!" She then started to swing her axe around in anger. "NO! NO! SON OF HALFTROLL RAT EATING MUNGE BUCKET!"
A resounding clank echoed through the air. Gothi, the village elder, emerged from the throng, her staff striking the ground rhythmically. The gathered crowd's excitement was palpable, lighting up the atmosphere.
"Wait! Wait!" Stoick cried when the people began to leave.
"So, later." Hiccup tried to escape.
Gobber snags Hiccup as he attempts to leave. He used his hook to grab his apprentice from his shirt.
"Not so fast," Gobber tells him.
"I'm kinda late for..." Hiccup said when Astrid came with an axe.
"What?" Astrid asked lividly. "Late for what exactly!?"
Stoick holds out his hands to silence the jabbering crowd. "Okay quiet down. The elder has decided."
Thrilled and with a big grin on his face, Gobber stands proudly behind Hiccup and Astrid, eagerly awaiting the crowd's reaction. As the crowd waits in silent anticipation, he points to Astrid, hoping for a positive response. However, Gothi shakes her head 'no,' surprising the audience with her disapproval.
Undeterred, Gobber then turns and points to Hiccup, seeking approval from the village elder. Hiccup responds with a nod of affirmation, prompting the crowd to erupt in thunderous cheers. Meanwhile, Astrid, feeling overlooked and slighted, turns to Hiccup with a seething, deadly glare, her frustration and anger evident to all.
"You've done it! You've done it, Hiccup! You get to kill the dragon!" Gobber exclaimed, congratulating his apprentice.
"Ha, ha! That's my boy!" Stoick said proudly.
All the teenagers, except for an unhappy Astrid, gathered around and lifted him onto Fishlegs' shoulders amidst cheers and applause.
"Heh. Oh, yeah!" Hiccup cheered with as much enthusiasm as he could muster. "Yes! I can't wait. I am so..."
"... leaving! We're leaving." Hiccup called out in anger as he marched into the Cove. "I gotta get out of this village." He then looked around and wondered if Luna was even around. "Luna?" He called out, looking around. "You here?"
Hiccup guessed Luna wasn't back yet, so he decided to try to see if she was maybe flying. He quickly began to morph into his dragon form before taking to the skies. As he took to the shies, he just missed Astrid as she finally found the cove, but it was too late as he was already gone.
As Hiccup soared gracefully through the vast skies, his keen eyes scanned the horizon in search of Luna, the elusive Light Fury. He eagerly delved into the fluffy clouds, and for a fleeting moment, he thought he had caught a glimpse of her ethereal form. Alas, it was only the silhouette of his own dragon casting a shadow in the billowing cumulus.
Suddenly, a soft, melodious sound caught his attention, drawing him gracefully towards its source. With a surge of elation, Hiccup finally beheld Luna, her radiant presence filling him with joy. He gazed at her with wonder, captivated by her beauty.
Wanting to impress Luna, Hiccup executed daring aerial maneuvers, soaring and weaving around her with extraordinary skill. His artistry in flight seized Luna's attention so completely that she barely noticed his presence, her thoughts consumed by the impending return to Berk and the explanations she would owe.
Surprised by Hiccup's remarkable progress in mastering independent flight, Luna marveled at his proficiency and determination. Even without her guidance, Hiccup had honed his abilities to a remarkable degree, and Luna observed his newfound prowess with deep admiration.
Hiccup and Luna soared bravely into the heart of a swirling vortex, the dark clouds of an oncoming storm billowing around them. Luna unleashed a brilliant, crackling plasma blast and darted through the tempest, vanishing into the churning winds. Her unseen form beckoned Hiccup to follow, her curiosity about the Night Fury's abilities piqued.
With determination, Hiccup gathered his strength and charged a pulsating plasma blast before hurtling through the roiling maelstrom. To his dismay, nothing changed. Undeterred, he made two more attempts, but each time, the result remained the same - no invisibility. But the constant trying was beginning to make him tired.
Concerned for Hiccup, Luna swooped down to catch him, her graceful form whisking him to safety. Slowly, Hiccup regained his bearings and took to the sky once more. As they soared side by side, a palpable connection seemed to weave between them, almost as if they were performing a delicate aerial dance together. Rising higher into the sky, their flight paths intertwined, shaping an unintentional but unmistakable symbol of love - a heart formed by their synchronized mirrored movements.
Hiccup was transfixed by the piercing gaze of the Light Fury, lost in a swirl of emotions and inquiries. How was it possible to find himself drawn to a dragon? And why had this creature that was said to be his enemy offered him more solace and warmth than anyone else he had ever known? Could this overwhelming sensation building within him be genuine love?
In a moment of abandon, Hiccup affectionately nuzzled Luna's face, prompting a reflexive expression that he couldn't quite read—was it shock, or perhaps a touch of surprise? As they gracefully descended, the iridescent Northern lights danced above them, casting a magical glow on their intertwined wings. Overwhelmed by the wondrous spectacle, Hiccup's smile radiated pure joy and disbelief at the profound beauty of the moment. The exhilarating flight granted him a euphoric sense of freedom and connection, unlike anything he had ever experienced.
Hiccup looked over and saw Luna seemed to be lost in thought. "Luna, I-"
"There is something I need to show you." Luna stopped him from going further with his thoughts.
Hiccup was confused but decided to go along with it. Luna lead him down across the ocean and Hiccup didn't realize just how close Hellheim Gate was to Berk when flying as a dragon. He followed Luna and his dragon senses were alerting him to the sea stacks that have taken so many of their ships over the centuries.
Suddenly, out of the dense cloud, a Monstrous Nightmare emerges. Hiccup gasped at the sudden appearance as he flew closer to Luna when the Nightmare called out in anger, but didn't dare strike at him. A Zippleback appears on the other side of Luna, boxing them in.
"What's going on, Luna?" Hiccup asks.
Luna didn't explain as she was following her instincts. Other dragons, previously invisible in the thick clouds, appear all around them. HUNDREDS of them, all carrying fish and game in their talons.
'It looks like they're hauling in their kill.' Hiccup mentally commented.
The Zippleback eyes them ravenously. The dragons bank and dive in formation, and Hicucp follows as they plummet through the thickening fog and weave between towering, craggy sea stacks.
At the foot of an immense volcanic caldera, illuminated by streams of lava, a group of dragons emerges. They align themselves and navigate through a narrow crevice, speeding along a serpentine tunnel. This passage opens into a colossal, humid cavern, layered with jagged ledges. Various species of dragons are scattered around, resting in their nests among treasures. The newcomers glide in, delivering their haul of fish and wild game into a fiery pit at the center, enveloped in a haze. Hiccup watches, awestruck.
"What my dad wouldn't give to find this." Hiccup commented.
Luna slipped away from the group, settling on a secluded, dimly lit ledge to remain unnoticed while Hiccup trailed behind. Hiccup glanced around, observing the bustling activity reminiscent of a hive. They observed the ongoing flow of food being deposited into the pit.
"It's satisfying to know that all of our food has been dumped down a hole." Hiccup commented to Luna, not realizing why she was being so quiet. "Why aren't they eating any of it?"
The last to make an entrance is the simple-minded Gronckle. It lingers above the pit, spewing out its meager offering—a pitiful small fish. As the fish descends into the misty abyss, a fearsome roar erupts. The Gronckle attempts to escape, but it's too late; a colossal dragon head bursts from the misty pit, seizing it mid-flight and gulping it down in one swift motion.
"What...is that?" Hiccup asked Luna.
"Our Queen," Luna answered in horror and fear.
The monstrous creature sniffs the air, its senses alert to their presence. As it approaches the ledge where Hiccup conceals himself with Luna trying to hide him, it lets out a thunderous roar. The sound triggers a flurry of dragons to take to the skies in terror.
Luna and Hiccup, too, ascend swiftly, narrowly escaping the creature's lethal bite. In a frenzied lunge, the colossal dragon captures a Zippleback from the sky. Meanwhile, Luna and Hiccup blend into the chaotic throng, vanishing amidst the mass departure of dragons fleeing the caldera, driven by fear.
Flying their way back to Berk, Hiccup was getting the full disclosure from Luna on everything that was going on. "She is our queen. She is an Alpha of our species."
"An Alpha?" Hiccup asked in shock.
"She has this power that allows her to command us. We do her bidding, or we become her food." Luna explained as they landed.
Hiccup landed and began to morph into his normal form. "That is why you raid us."
Luna nodded as she shifted into a human form. "Because if we don't, we are killed."
Hiccup was shocked to hear this and sighed. "This is bigger than I thought." He said, walking around trying to figure things out. "Why did you show me this?"
"Because..." Luna sighed as it was time to tell him. "You are the only one who can fight her control. You are the key to freeing us all."
"Me?!" Hiccup asked. "How can I fight something like that?"
"I don't know," Luna admitted that she didn't think too far ahead. "But you have the power. You have a whole village."
"If I tell them, they will KILL you!" Hicucp informed her. "I can't let them do that."
Luna saw that he truly cared for her, even over his own village. "So, what do we do?"
Hiccup sighed. "I don't know." He admitted that there was no way out of this situation. "I don't know... give me until tomorrow, I will figure something out." He watched as Luna walked over and tried to comfort him. "About earlier..."
"Later," Luna told him. She knew he wanted to discuss that kiss. "When you figure things out..."
Luna, with a graceful yet powerful movement, shifted back into her majestic dragon form and ascended into the starry night sky. As she soared away, Hiccup stood in solemn silence, contemplating the daunting path that lay ahead. He felt the weight of responsibility for ensuring the peaceful coexistence of dragons and the villagers, especially challenging as his own father remained entrenched in hostility towards dragons.
The future seemed uncertain, with the looming threat of the Queen and her intentions casting a shadow over everything. Tomorrow promised change, but whether it would be a change for the better or worse was a question that lingered heavily in Hiccup's mind.
And now he needed to figure out if he did indeed have feelings for Luna and if she felt the same...
