It was a quiet Saturday morning, with the sun streaming gently through the kitchen window. Mercedes sat at the table, the pregnancy test in her trembling hand. She had already taken one test earlier that morning, and now, as she waited for the result of the second test, her mind raced with a mixture of hope and anxiety. The two minutes seemed like an eternity.
Finally, she glanced down and saw two unmistakable pink lines. Her heart skipped a beat. She picked up the first test she had taken, now sitting on the counter, and compared the results. Both were positive.
"Sam!" she called out, her voice a blend of excitement and shock.
In the living room, Sam was deeply engrossed in a novel, the morning's tranquility surrounding him. Hearing the urgency in her voice, he quickly set the book aside and rushed to the kitchen.
"Mercedes, what is it? Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.
Mercedes turned to him, her eyes wide and glistening with unshed tears. She held up both tests, her hands shaking slightly. "Sam, I'm pregnant," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
For a moment, Sam stood frozen, his eyes darting from Mercedes' face to the tests in her hands. He took the tests from her, staring at the lines, trying to comprehend the reality of what he was seeing.
"You're ... pregnant?" he repeated slowly, as if saying the words would make them more real. "You're really pregnant?"
Mercedes nodded, her tears now streaming freely down her cheeks. "Yes, Sam. We're going to have a baby."
Sam's expression shifted from shock to pure, unadulterated joy. He laughed, a sound filled with disbelief and happiness. He wrapped his arms around Mercedes, lifting her off the ground and spinning her around in a jubilant embrace.
"Oh my God, Mercedes, this is incredible!" he exclaimed, setting her back down but not letting go. "I can't believe it! After just two months... we're going to be parents!"
They stood there, holding each other tightly, absorbing the enormity of the news. The kitchen seemed to hum with their excitement, the morning sun casting a warm, golden glow around them.
"Can you believe it happened so quickly?" Mercedes said, her voice filled with wonder. "I thought it would take longer. I was prepared for it to take longer."
Sam nodded, still holding her close. "I know. It feels like a miracle."
They moved to the couch in the living room, needing to sit down and fully process the news. Mercedes rested her head on Sam's shoulder, and he wrapped an arm around her, holding her close.
"We need to start thinking about everything," Mercedes said after a while. "Doctors, appointments, prenatal vitamins... there's so much to do."
Sam smiled, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. "And we need to tell our families. They'll be so thrilled."
They spent the next hour sitting together, discussing their plans and dreams for the future. They talked about baby names, nursery ideas, and what kind of parents they hoped to be. Every now and then, Sam would turn to Mercedes and say, "I still can't believe it," and she would nod, sharing in his amazement.
Eventually, they decided it was time to share their news. They started with their parents, calling Sam's mother first.
"Mom, you might want to sit down for this," Sam said, trying to contain his excitement.
"What's going on, Sam?" Susan asked, a hint of worry in her voice.
"Mercedes is pregnant!" Sam said
Susan let out a joyous scream. "I knew it! I had a feeling it would happen soon! Oh, I'm so happy for you both! I can't wait to be a grandmother!"
They called Mercedes' father next.
"Hi, Dad," Mercedes began, unable to keep the smile out of her voice.
"Mercedes, you sound happy. What's the good news?" Robert asked.
"We're going to have a baby," she announced.
Robert's voice broke with emotion. "This is wonderful news! I'm so happy for you and Sam. You're going to be amazing parents."
By the time they had finished sharing their news, Sam and Mercedes were exhausted but overjoyed. They sat back on the couch, holding hands and smiling at each other.
"I still can't believe it," Sam said, shaking his head in disbelief. "We're really going to be parents."
Mercedes squeezed his hand, her heart full. "I know. It's like a dream come true."
As they sat there, basking in the happiness of their news, they felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and anticipation. The future was bright and full of possibilities, and they were ready to embrace every moment of it together, hand in hand, as they prepared to welcome their little one into the world.
