Whirlpool's Very Own

Chapter 3: Masa and Nao

}{ WVO }{

The moon hung low, casting an eerie lunar glow over the dense forest surrounding one of Hidden Sound's largest training grounds - built for all purpose use, it was one of a few locations that served as a testing grounds…for experimental ninja techniques and tools, simulations, and battle games.

Masa stood hidden in the shadows amongst the trees and their leaves, observing his self-assigned students tensely before addressing them. Tonight, he would make fresh assessments of Kin, Dosu, and Zaku's individual contributions within their restored team dynamic. To do so, he called for a simulated mission to further plan and enhance their training. The simulation was rather simple and straightforward as Masa believed that he could get a raw and honest read on their progress and mentality.

He felt no motivation for complicated training machinations as ninja often failed from a lack of reinforcement and foundation in using basic logic that was quickly deployed against threats. Pressure and risk often caused ninja to overthink or over-complicate matters resulting in a lack of solution to execution across the board. Simplicity was best.

It'd all been done before, and there was a very rare chance for threats that were original or unheard of that existing solutions wouldn't be enough. Therefore, tonight's mission would test their skills under pressure and measure their base ninja IQ.

"Now, before we begin…I want you three to remember," Masa whispered, completely shaded in the darkness away from the moonlight that fell before his feet. "Precision and speed. Solution to execution equals success. Stay icy, stay sharp, be smooth…fast is smooth." He winked, allowing a small smirk that caused the three youths to mimic, returning some calmness to their stiff postures.

He made sure they each understood and that their objective was clear: Infiltrate the simulated enemy camp, retrieve the scroll, and return undetected and unfollowed leaving no presence behind. Masa would watch their every move closely and time their progress, although he wasn't looking for quickness to completion for this simulation.

Like any ninja, the three young genin had their own pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, and motivational factors. As a team, it was up to each one of them to cover or cancel out one another's weaknesses and enhance or improve their strengths to their most optimum measures.

Kin, the young woman known for being agile, sharp minded, and strategic-prepared to retrieve the scroll as agreed amongst the three. Dosu and Zaku, both creative, resilient, and rough-edged, but witty-prepared to backup, cover, and if needed, distract or disable the guards.

Masa nodded as they stood at the ready, pausing a moment…then signaled for them to begin. "Off you go and remember your training. You'll do fine."

"Yes, sensei!" The trio said in unison then darted off, splitting in different directions as they started the test. Even separated, Masa noticed they moved in unison, their paces equal and like a well-oiled machine as they crossed the perimeter threshold into the testing field.

Kin suddenly stopped and silently signaled for Dosu and Zaku to stop and gather upon her, holding up a fist as a silent signal to communicate the message. Masa observed as all three Sound genin listened closely for any tells, showing a proficiency for using, feeling, and interpreting any sounds, vibrations, and rhythms in the air - a must for all who wished to be Sound-nin.

Finding nothing, Kin nodded silently to continue, sending Dosu and Zaku in different directions to flank the tent and the pair of ninja guarding the scroll as they advanced upon the camp. The boys' footsteps were silent and swift until they positioned themselves strategically, and marked themselves ready with a single hand-sign towards Kin.

Dosu signaled once more, the message for Zaku. Understanding, Zaku unleashed a silent wave of sounds undetectable to the human hearing sense that were sharp and awfully disorienting. The guards' eyes widened, immediately understanding they were under attack, but helpless to respond. They became weak kneed, barely able to remain standing, suddenly confused and disoriented as Dosu swept in behind both guards and incapacitated them while ensuring the movement and vibration sensitive alarms weren't triggered.

Kin immediately darted forward out of a negative stance, whipping herself into an unseen flicker of speed with movement that was both fluid and precise. She ducked beneath the tent's entry, pushing away the tent's flaps. As she entered, her eyes fell on a table where the scroll lay, a grounded length of barely visible ninja wire connecting it to an obvious trap that ran beneath the ground.

She began clicking her tongue, emitting a sound that bounced back in her direction like radar, and giving her a mental image of the trap's mechanism beneath the ground and directly under the table. She pulled a senbon from her hair, this one larger, thicker, and studier than the usual senbon. She would have to disable it in two parts.

She released her senbon with the flick of her fingers, a quiet snapping sound being made as it shot into the ground and penetrated the trigger, jamming the mechanism. She reappeared in a blip as her heart pounded with adrenaline, cutting the ninja wire just before the senbon did its job. Her hair falling down her back as her quick movements stilled again.

Meanwhile, Masa watched from his concealed position, approval in his eyes as he watched her disable the trap with an unshakable resolve, noting her focus and grace in cautiousness.. That explosive had been very real.

With the guards down and the trap disabled, Kin entered the tent, retrieving the scroll with deft fingers. She glanced back, looking upwards as she stepped out of the tent, glancing upward and catching Masa's approving nod from the shadows.

Mission accomplished, Kin rejoined Dosu and Zaku as they finished covering their tracks and cleaning up the scene. All three moved quickly, retracing their steps as they moved in formation. Masa followed silently, observing just the same. 'Right about…now.' He thought to himself as a non-descript pair of Sound-nin flew overhead among the trees.

The young trio suddenly stopped, instantly on alert just as the rustle of leaves confirmed what they all felt, an incoming threat. Two ninja emerged from the shadows, their intent clear. This was part of the test.

From his hidden vantage point, Masa watched, stopwatch in hand, keenly observing his students' reactions as he pressed the timer button to begin the watch.

Kin's eyes narrowed. She signaled to Dosu and Zaku with a subtle hand gesture. Dosu nodded, moving to intercept the approaching enemies. Zaku flanked to the right, ready to support. Masa clicked the watch button three times, checked it, and started it again.

The first ninja lunged at Kin, but she was ready - with a swift movement, she deflected the attack of the more experienced ninja, and countered with a series of rapid strikes with senbon secured between her fingers.

Meanwhile, the second ninja aimed for Dosu, who calmly activated his Melody Arm, releasing a sound wave that disoriented his opponent only marginally as his aim was not only off, but the balaclava masked man .predicted Dosu's actions.

Zaku cursed, noticing the lack of effectiveness to his teammate's attack, but took advantage of the masked-nin's focus on Dosu to act. He ran up a nearby tree, summursaulting off it, gaining a height advantage as he flipped overhead while unleashing a powerful gust of wind that forced the ninja back. "Keep them off balance, let's mix it up!" he shouted, coordinating with Dosu.

Masa's eyebrow twitched with interest at Zaku's actions. The boy had never before taken advantage of environmental factors and was the most predictable of the three, so the short moment signaled to him that at least Zaku was beginning to rely on his mind more.

Kin, ever agile and precise, continued to evade her attacker's blows while also baiting her enemy, using the physics of her long hair to distract, blind, and feint. She turned her head, sending long black hair forward with chakra laden strands that lengthened her follicles. Her hair strengthened like adamantium as it encircled the man's leg, and pulled back, tripping him up. Stalling out the man's elusive movement, Kin struck out with pinpoint accuracy, releasing the blood-dotted senbon between her fingers at the throat of the threat.

Kin's gain in advantage came as momentum swung to Dosu's favor as his masked opponent began struggling against the relentless auditory assault. Dosu didn't have to rely on his arm as much as usual as Zaku used his own abilities to rebound the vibrations back onto their opposition, getting two attacks for every one attempt. As the, on the spot, team attack began to prove fruitful both boys fell into a rhythm never before seen.

However, despite the current advantage and solid hits to both masked ninja, the older and more experienced pair weren't easily felled. Masa had chosen these two for this exercise because they were battle-tested and relentless. They possessed a level of stamina that allowed them to function through intense pain and disorientation for varied periods of time. That fact minimized the trio's effective tactics and made ending their ambush more challenging than anticipated. Masa watched intently, still clicking on his stop-watch, and noting their ability to adapt under pressure. This was not just about strength, success or failure but strategy and teamwork.

"Keep moving," Masa whispered to himself, impressed by their coordination and whip-quick decision making. They also improvised well and did so in ways he hadn't thought them capable of. The stopwatch continued to tick.

Zaku switched tactics, using his air pressure technique to create a barrier, slowing the ninja's movements. Kin shifted her attention, sensing the sudden opening, and engaged the second ninja, sending a flurry of kunai flying from her hands.

Dosu, sensing an opportunity, charged forward, leveraging the chaos. His melody arm produced a higher frequency, causing the opponent to stagger.

Masa observed their decision-making, noting the increased use of non-verbal communication and adapted their strategies between one another to switch methods of attack and focus of opponents. Time was crucial, but always situational. Efficiency mattered more.

As the fight continued, Kin realized they needed to end this quickly. She exchanged a quick glance with Dosu, who nodded in understanding. They had to not only shift the battle's momentum, but their methods of attack again. It had become obvious that these two were sturdier than most.

"Remember, there's a time and a place. Pick and choose your battles, you three." Masa thought silently, again clicking on the stopwatch several times without looking at it.

With a swift feint, Kin utilized her hair again, gathering every strand together and twisting them into a point as she purposely telegraphed stabbing at her attacker to draw the rival ninja in closer. She allowed herself to appear overwhelmed with her facial expression becoming one of worry and panic. Dosu, reading the situation correctly, unleashed a concentrated sound burst aimed at damaging internal organs rather than disorienting both opponents. Zaku swept in, either hand aimed at either ninja as he followed up with a compressed air blast, that threw both ninja several feet back as they were knocked from their feet through a tree, and into the darkness.

"Now!" Kin shouted, and they seized the moment to…retreat.

They regrouped, immediately giving up their position, and moving swiftly through the forest, using the trees for cover as they ran rounding paths that crossed over one another's paths. Alternating between lead position, cover, and contorting evidence to prevent tracking by snapping branches in different directions, kicking over rocks, letting blood trickle randomly, and more. Their goal was clear to Masa: buy time, mislead the enemy, and escape without being tracked.

Behind them, the ambushed ninja struggled to recover as Dosu's attack didn't mortally wound either man, but damaged their internals enough to prevent a swift recovery and chase. Masa watched as his students executed their escape with creativity, quick thinking, and precision, clicking the stopwatch with every new action he saw them make.

The trio navigated the dense woods, speeding up with every second that passed without sensing either ninja on their tracks, allowing for their every step to be that much more calculated. Kin finally led the way, no longer needing to change their formations as Dosu covered the rear, and Zaku followed from a flanking position.

"We should be good now. Let's split up and regroup at point Charlie," Kin instructed. They nodded and diverged, each taking a separate path to further confuse potential pursuers.

Masa noted their adaptability, how they utilized their environment and maintained composure under pressure - clicking the stopwatch several more times as they split up, feeling a sense of pride and pleasant surprise at their performance this late evening.

Reaching the rendezvous point and slightly out of breath. Kin, Dosu, and Zaku reunited, as they steadied themselves and waited for Masa to show. Although they knew they weren't finished if their sensei didn't arrive to gather and dismiss them, they exchanged tempered, but silent acknowledgments of their success - able to feel individual progress and improvement as a team from their performance in tonight's simulated mission.

Several minutes passed before Masa emerged from the shadows, a satisfied smile on his face. "Well done team," he said, pocketing the stopwatch. "You showed great teamwork and adaptability."

Kin handed over the scroll, her expression determined. "We couldn't let you down."

"And you didn't, far from it actually. You all surprised me tonight, I saw some new techniques and strategies that were all unexpected." Masa replied. "Remember, it's not just about completing the mission but doing so effectively and efficiently."

"I-is that why you had the stopwatch?" Kin inquired for the group, worried that he'd been timing them. She was aware that maybe they'd drawn out the confrontation for too long and that Masa intended to reprimand them for drawing out the confrontation needlessly.

If Masa taught them anything, it was that quick decisiveness, trust in oneself and teammates, asking for help, and knowing when to fight or retreat, when to appear strong or appear weak - were just a few of the easiest things to do to survive…not only as a ninja, but in everyday life.

"Good question, Kin-chan." He complimented with a wink as he went into his vest pocket to retrieve the stopwatch. Meanwhile, his acknowledgement made Kin happy, to which her male teammates just gave each other a silent look.

"And no, I was not timing you. This may be a stopwatch, but like any good tool it has multiple uses. Such as a counter." He said holding it up for a moment. "My purpose was to track your number of unique movements, which is why I'm impressed with your showing tonight. When we first started, as a team, you three only accounted for a total of 50 unique actions."

"And tonight?" Dosu spoke up, making his inquiry with a brave tone of voice.

Masa frowned thoughtfully, trying to draw out anticipation a bit, but his three charges weren't going for it. They pretty much folded their arms in unison, their expressions cold and sharp. "Ah-ha," Masa chuckled a little before clearing his throat. "Right, well…you all came in 217 unique actions. A vast improvement."

"Alright!" Zaku expressed with some excitement, meanwhile Dosu and Kin just looked at him unresponsive. "What?!"

Kin shook her head, sounding exasperated. "We don't even know why that matters, or what that means."

"Right?" Dosu confirmed before all three regarded Masa again. "So…why does that matter?"

"And why is it important?" Kin finished while Zaku sheepishly nodded in agreement.

"Again, good questions. Simply put, it shows me you're all being less repetitive and less predictable in your attacks, techniques, teamwork, formations, and so on." The double agent responded smoothly as he pocketed the stopwatch again. "It means you're giving yourselves better odds of success, using your mind more within a confrontational situation, less predictable, and giving yourselves better chances of survival and being the superior team or opponent. However, this number…still needs to be much higher. Skillswise…where you all are now versus where I want and expect you all to be is significant." Masa explained calmly.

"And, wh-where is that…exactly?" Zaku asked tentatively.

"...Ideally?" Masa looked up at the sky, taking in the moonlight and the clarity of the stars that made them seem closer than they truly were. "I believe in restraint in exchange for steady progress, this makes risk more flexible. So, I don't see why you couldn't reach…if not exceed the level of a Jonin someday. It's really a matter of what you want and where you see yourself in the future."

Dosu, Kin, and Zaku's expressions were varied, but they all showed obvious surprise and healthy skepticism.

Masa clapped his hands together and didn't say another word about it, knowing they'd think on his words. The questions would come later. The timing was unfortunate since he was leaving with Orochimaru early the next day, but he'd put aside some time.

"Ookay, then. I think we're good to go, so good talk, and get some rest. Treatment if you need it, and I'm sure I don't have to remind you not to go to that mini-me Kabuto…matter of fact. If you see him and he asks you anything, tell him to come see me."

The three genin nodded in understanding. Tonight had been a test of their skills, but also of their ability to work as a cohesive unit…which devolved into some odd sort of pep-talk…they thought.

"Alright, off with you. Six in the morning tomorrow, if any one of you misses this meeting, know that I'll have a great punishment for you when I get back. Until then!"

As they all left, Masa reflected on the things he'd seen tonight. They had come far, yet there was always room for improvement. He knew they would face real challenges in the future, but tonight, they had proven their potential. He considered if his Midorinami benefactors wouldn't mind the three being brought in if worse came the worse. Because it was coming…and it was coming right soon.

Of course, he couldn't bail out on this, he had people relying on his position…and especially getting close to Orochimaru. Masa sighed and pulled a green leaf cigarette from behind his ear, immediately lighting it while inhaling the burning length of herb mixed tobacco, and exhaling a long stream of smoke. He sighed, raising his gaze to the evening skies as he placed the rolled tobacco to his lips, subtly inhaling more smoke as he fell into silent thought.

"This could be it. Why the Hidden Sand? Wonder how the guys are doing? How long now…2 years, 6 months, and 24 days - give or take a couple hours…not long now. Sand, Sand, Sand…what is in Hidden Sand? No, not what. Who, only two. Two possibilities, can't sit on my hands. Father above, look over me, guide my steps. Show me the way…"

Masa sighed, stopping himself from thinking further. If he let his mind wonder too long, sleep would be a useless struggle. Exhaling thick, billowing smoke he lowered his gaze, and smothered the partially smoked cigarette out against the bark of a tree. He then started back to the village to try getting some semblance of sleep.

}{ Hidden Sound: The Next Morning }{

The first rays of dawn painted the sky in hues of pink and gold as Masa stood at the center of their training ground, his silhouette stark against the brightening horizon. Right on time, his trio of young ninja stood at the ready, their breath misting in the cool morning air: Dosu, the quiet strategist- Zaku, the resilient strong- and Kin, the agile and perceptive girl.

Masa nodded quietly as he met their eyes one by one. No words were exchanged as he began their training with a series of rigorous physical exercises to get them warmed up, pushing his students a little harder and a little further in their opening routines.

"And…time! Good start everyone." Masa announced. "Stand straight, arms over your head, and control your breathing." He advised the trio as their bodies glistened with sweat, their breaths ragged, but their determination to obey holding firm. "Get some water. Not a lot, you'll only cramp up."

He chuckled lightly as the three silently nodded, and went to scoop a drink of water for themselves from the bucket sitting nearby. After the physical exertion of the day's warm-ups, Masa transitioned them to the mental, sharpening their minds by speaking to them. He delved into the intricacies of sound-based ninjutsu with vivid detail and descriptions - getting into the main focus and theme of the morning's lesson, preparing them with strong, adaptable skills with sound jutsu, given the precarious chance of his return to Hidden Sound.

He needed them to mind their motivations and goals in case he was lost to the dunes. Masa sighed as he watched them sip on water and catch their breaths, appearing more like the young teenagers they truly were. He raised a hand to his heart, allowing a small smile before calling them back to attention - got damn if these three hadn't grown on him.

What's more, he'd keyed in on Kin's endearing little fascination with him. That would need to be cleaned up - planning to provide insight, or the girl may torture herself due to mislabeling her feelings properly…especially as he was aware of the connection she had with Zaku.

Today, he wanted to demonstrate the intricacies of sound-based ninjutsu further since all three had variations on the technique already, but were barely scratching the surface. The use of sound was a very specialized technique, often overlooked in favor of the more visually spectacular displays of power. But to Masa, it was a symphony, a language of its own. Spectacular jutsu were a contradiction to the ninja way, ninja were supposed to move in silence, and it didn't take grand visuals to instill mental fear. Shows of power were just that, a show.

He began with the basics, explaining the principles of sound propagation, manipulation, layering, and mixing. Kin, Dosu, and Zaku each listened intently, their eyes sharp with curiosity and focus. He then moved on to practical applications, demonstrating how varied levels and pitches of sound could be used for offense, defense, and reconnaissance or multi-purposes.

He created examples of minor illusions with sound, masking their presence and disorienting their opponents, things they seemed to already know how to do. He used it to amplify their senses, allowing them to 'see' through obstacles. And he even demonstrated how sound could be weaponized, a silent but deadly force capable of incapacitating an enemy.

As the day wore on, the training grew more intense. Masa unleashed a barrage of sound-based techniques in an exhibition of what was possible for sound jutsu, each one more complex, robust, and devastating than the last. The students, inspired by their teacher's mastery, pushed themselves to quickly adopt themselves to Masa's lessons.

Kin, kept to her usual quiet and determined self. She watched Masa with a mix of admiration and awe as she mimicked his example. His grace and precision were mesmerizing, and she found herself drawn to his easy mastery of a technique overlooked.

As the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows across the training ground two hours out from the noon-sun, Masa paused, his gaze sweeping across his students. "Okay, great effort! You're all aware of my joining the Sound Five in protecting and escorting Orochimaru-sama to Hidden Sand," he announced stiffly.

A wave of disappointment washed over the students at the reminder. Dosu, the most vocal, spoke for them all. "Sensei, when will you return?"

Masa smiled wryly. "I cannot say for certain, I've already told you more than I should. However, know this: the knowledge I've imparted today is a powerful tool you need to continue practicing responsibly in my short absence. Use it wisely, I won't always be around. You don't need me, but you three need each other. No one does it alone. That's all for now and remember, I'll be watching."

Masa picked up his sling-bag and threw it over his head onto his back as they dispersed, Kin lingered behind. "Sensei," she began, her voice barely a whisper.

Masa turned to face Kin, a knowing look in his eyes. "Kin," he replied, his tone gentle. "Is there something you need?"

Kin hesitated, her heart beginning to pound in her chest. The words she wanted to say were trapped in her throat, a tangled mass of emotions and uncertainty.

After the training, as the sun progressed in its ascent, Kin approached Masa. "Your mastery of sound is incredible, I never considered any of the techniques you showed us today" she said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. "I've never seen anything like it, outside of a few people."

"You mean, Tayuya." Masa nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Well, thank you," he replied. "Sound is a powerful and dynamic tool with many uses. It can be used for both creation and destruction, even protection."

There was a moment of silence between them, a charged stillness that hung in the air. Kin felt a strange pull towards Masa, an attraction that went beyond mere respect. A connection and a resonance between two souls.

"I want to learn more," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I want to master sound-based ninjutsu like you."

Masa studied her face for a long moment, his eyes searching her soul. Then, with a nod, he said, "Very well. But it won't be easy. Still, a little focus and dedication can take you far."

Kin's heart leaped with joy. This was the opportunity she had been waiting for. She knew it would be a challenging path, but she was ready to do what was necessary to level up her abilities. She didn't want to see the fate of those that disappointed Orochimaru.

The training ground was silent, the sounds of the earlier battle fading into memory as Masa waited for Kin to say more. It was obvious there was more weighing on her mind than simply wanting to learn advanced jutsu from him.

Kin took a deep breath, shoring up her courage. "There's more," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've... I've come to realize that I... care about you, Masa. More than just as a mentor."

Masa's eyes widened slightly, taken aback by her confession, however he'd been prepared to address this issue. However, before he could respond and set the record straight between them, Kin turned and ran back into the forest, her face burning with a mix of fear and exhilaration.

"Geez," Masa chuckled to himself as he watched her go. It looked like he wouldn't get to address these issues she was having and clearing the air between them. "Better get going, otherwise I'll get on Orochimaru-sama's bad side and that wouldn't do me any favors."

The ancient temple stood silent and forgotten, its crumbling walls and overgrown vines a testament to its age. Tsunade and Shizune moved cautiously through the shadowy corridors, their footsteps echoing softly against the stone. The air was thick with the scent of moss and decay, and an eerie stillness permeated the place. They had heard rumors of a hidden medical text, one that could contain invaluable knowledge, and they were determined to find it.

"Be careful, Tsunade-sama," Shizune whispered, her eyes scanning the dark corners. "This place feels... off."

Tsunade nodded, her senses on high alert. "Stay close, Shizune. We don't know what we might encounter here."

Unbeknownst to them, Nao Yuki had been following their every move. Tasked with keeping tabs on Tsunade and Shizune, he had tracked them to the temple. He moved silently, his form blending with the shadows. As he watched them search, he felt a pang of guilt. He respected Tsunade and Shizune, but his mission required him to remain hidden and report their activities no matter how he felt about spying on them.

As Tsunade and Shizune entered the temple's inner sanctum, Nao suddenly stopped following as his gaze fell upon a small, ornate chest half-buried in the rubble. His instincts told him that the text was possibly inside. Moving quickly and quietly, he approached the chest, intent on retrieving it before Tsunade could.

Just as his fingers brushed the small chest's surface, a voice rang out, filled with anger and authority. "What do you think you're doing?"

Nao turned in surprise, finding himself face-to-face with Tsunade. Her eyes blazed with fury, and her fists clenched at her sides. Shizune stood slightly behind her, ready to support her mentor.

"Spying on us, huh?" Tsunade growled. "You have a lot of nerve."

"Wait, Tsunade-sama, it isn't like that," Nao tried, speaking softly as he raised his hands in a placating gesture - the small chest held in one hand. "I'm not your enemy, it was me that started the rumors. I was only—"

But Tsunade was in no mood to listen. "Spare me your excuses!" She yelled, with a swift motion, she launched herself at Nao, her fist aimed at his head. Nao immediately created a small wall of ice and knowing it wouldn't hold, he barely managed to dodge aside, the force of her punch causing the ice black to shatter as her fist struck the stone wall behind him - causing the aged stone of the wall to crack and crumble.

The temple shook with the impact, dust and debris raining down from above, nearly unbalancing the Yuki. Nao leapt back, trying to put some distance between them. "Please, listen! I'm only here to—"

"Enough! Your ice won't save you!" Tsunade shouted, her voice echoing through the chamber. She charged again, her movements powerful and precise. Nao was forced to stay on the defensive, using his agility to avoid her devastating blows and stay out of her reach..

As they fought, Nao noticed the precarious state of the temple. Each of Tsunade's attacks sent tremors through the crumbling structure, causing more of the ancient stone to collapse. He needed to find a way to de-escalate the situation before the entire temple came down on them.

"Tsunade-sama, you have to stop!" he shouted, ducking under another one of her punches. "The temple won't hold much longer!"

Tsunade paused, her breath heavy and eyes filled with suspicion. "Why should I believe you?"

"Because I'm not here to harm you. I didn't follow you with the intention of fighting" Nao replied, his soft voice earnest. "I'm only here to observe and report. I was sent to keep an eye on your movements, and step in if anything untoward happened to you and Shizune-san… nothing more."

Shizune stepped forward, placing a hand on Tsunade's arm. "Tsunade-sama, maybe we should hear him out. If the temple collapses, we could lose the text and our lives."

Tsunade hesitated, her anger slowly giving way to reason. She glanced around at the trembling walls and the ceiling, now fissured with cracks. "Fine," she said, lowering her fists. "But if I find out you're lying, you'll regret it."

Nao nodded, relief washing over him. "Thank you for your consideration. Let's get the text and get out of here. I can explain better once we're out of here."

Working quickly, they retrieved the chest and carefully made their way out of the temple, the structure groaning ominously with each step. Once outside, Tsunade turned to Nao, her expression still wary but less hostile.

"I still don't trust you," she said bluntly. "But for now, I'll let you explain yourself."

Nao took a deep breath, grateful for the chance to finally speak. "I understand, Tsunade-sama. I'll tell you everything I can."

As they moved away from the crumbling temple, Nao knew that earning Tsunade's trust would not be easy, but it was a challenge he was willing to face. For now, their uneasy truce would have to suffice.

The small group found themselves in the warm glow of lanterns as they sat at the back of a tea house in a cozy ambiance as Nao, Tsunade, and Shizune settled around a low wooden table at the back of the establishment for privacy and security. The delicate aroma of jasmine tea filled the air, mingling with the soft chatter of patrons. Nao carefully unrolled the ancient scroll they had discovered, its parchment worn but the ink surprisingly vibrant.

Tsunade leaned forward eagerly, her keen eyes scanning the unfamiliar script. "I've never seen a language like this before. Are you sure you can translate it?"

Nao nodded, a hint of excitement in his voice. "For the most part, yes. It's a rare dialect, but I've been blessed enough to have studied similar texts under my mentors before. And this appears to be a medical compendium from the early shinobi era. It may even predate it."

Shizune poured tea for everyone, her curiosity piqued. "What exactly does it say?"

Nao traced his fingers over the worn symbols, taking his time in deciphering the text. "It's a detailed guide on advanced medical techniques and chakra healing methods. There are some… descriptions of remedies and procedures that could, dare I say, revolutionize modern medicine."

Tsunade raised an eyebrow, appearing slightly skeptical. "Interesting… Anything specific that stands out?"

"Here," Nao pointed to a passage as he slid the worn scroll to the middle of the table for Shizune and Tsunade to see, "here…it mentions a method for enhancing natural healing processes using natural chakra alignment. It could accelerate recovery times significantly. Healing and recovery times could be made negligible."

Shizune leaned closer, eyes wide. "That could save countless lives on the battlefield."

"Exactly," Nao continued, "and there's more. There's also a herb and rememdy list. Even more, it details a rare herb, known as 'Moonshade,' said to amplify chakra flow when used correctly. There's a few different examples provided, but part of it is faded."

Tsunade sipped her tea thoughtfully. "Moonshade... I've heard legends about it, but never thought it truly existed."

Nao nodded. "This text confirms its existence and even provides instructions on where to find it and how to cultivate it safely."

The tea house buzzed softly around them, a comforting background to their intense discussion. Nao's passion for the subject was evident as he continued to explain the intricacies of the text.

"There's also a section here," he said, "that talks about the mind-body connection, cultivation methods? It emphasizes the importance of strong mental links to the body, providing physical and spiritual improvements. And describes meditation techniques to strengthen this link."

Tsunade leaned back, impressed. "This could change the way we approach medical ninjutsu entirely."

Shizune glanced between them, excitement in her voice. "Imagine the possibilities! If we can integrate this knowledge with our current practices, it could lead to breakthroughs we've only dreamed of."

Nao smiled, grateful for their enthusiasm. "I think with time and study, we could uncover even more secrets within this scroll. A lot of it is damaged or faded, characters missing, so we'd need to be certain there's nothing important missing. Otherwise, a few words or letters either way would change the meaning of these words."

Tsunade nodded, determination shining in her eyes. "Let's make this our next project. We'll study the text, experiment with its teachings, and see how it can be applied."

As they sipped their tea, a sense of purpose filled the air. The ancient text held mysteries waiting to be unlocked, and together, they were ready to embark on this new journey. The evening wore on, but their conversation remained lively, fueled by the promise of discovery and the potential to reshape the future of healing in the shinobi world.

"Well then," Nao sighed as he finished his tea and placed the damaged scroll back within the small chest it was found in. "This is yours. I have to report back to my benefactors and let them know about this."

Tsunade blinked, her eyes narrowing as she realized Nao was standing to leave. Brought back to the present, she realized the distraction of the scroll had kept her from finding out more about the androgynous shinobi. However, before she could stop him, or say otherwise, Nao's body froze over before breaking into shards of glass - the Midorinami member now gone in an ice shunshin.

"Damn it all!" Tsunade cursed, pounding the table. "Let's go, Shizune. I'm not inclined to stick around here longer than necessary with that scroll in our possession now."
