August 2026 – Alfheim Online
The virtual field was a picturesque expanse of lush greenery bordered by towering trees adorned with glowing lanterns. The soft, magical glow of the lanterns created an enchanting atmosphere, perfect for the in-game festival that brought together players from all over Alfheim. Traditional festival stalls dotted the ground, offering games and virtual delicacies that filled the air with excitement and laughter.
Kirito, Asuna, Leafa, Silica, Klein, and Lisbeth wandered through the festival together, their spirits high and their camaraderie evident in their playful banter. They tried their hands at various festival games, laughing as Kirito won a giant, blue stuffed dragon that he handed to Silica, and Klein fumbled his attempts at a ring toss. They shared treats like virtual takoyaki and cotton candy, the flavors just as delightful as the real thing.
As the evening progressed, the group made their way to a wide clearing, the perfect spot to watch the night sky come alive with fireworks. The crowd's excitement was growing, the air buzzing with anticipation. As the first fireworks were about to start, the throng of players jostling for the best view caused Klein and Lisbeth to be separated from the others. They found themselves at the edge of the clearing, an unintentional private space for the two of them.
The fireworks began, painting the night sky with spectacular colors and intricate patterns. Lisbeth was mesmerized, her eyes sparkled with a softer, more wondrous light as she gazed up at the display. Klein, standing beside her, found himself captivated not by the fireworks, but by Lisbeth's expression.
Her face, illuminated by the bursts of color, revealed a side of her he rarely saw. The childlike wonder in her eyes made his heart skip a beat. He watched her, the loud booms of the fireworks fading into the background as his thoughts turned inward.
"Lisbeth… Rika," he thought, using her real name in his mind. "We've been through so much together. She's always been there, strong and resilient. But this… seeing her like this…"
Memories of their battles and shared moments flashed through his mind. He remembered her fierce determination, her unwavering support, and her infectious laughter. He thought about the time she made that inspiring speech in ALO, rallying all the players to help Kirito in the Underworld. Her passion and strength had moved him deeply, showing him a side of her that was both fierce and compassionate.
Now, seeing her vulnerability and joy, a surge of protectiveness and affection washed over him, crystallizing into a profound realization.
"I'm in love with her."
He had always found Lisbeth attractive since the day he met her, but he had never felt like this before. In fact, he had met many cute girls, but none of them had made him feel this way. He began to remember all their past interactions, including the last time they were at a festival together. They had shared so many moments, and he scolded himself for taking all that time together for granted. He regretted not treating her more specially before.
"Klein, you idiot," he thought, berating himself. "You've slipped so far into the friend zone, and you've been such a clown… She couldn't possibly be willing to give you a chance now."
The doubt gnawed at him, but he couldn't shake the feelings that had blossomed in his heart. He wanted to tell her, to confess his feelings, but fear held him back. What if she didn't feel the same way? What if he ruined the friendship they had?
The fireworks continued to dazzle the sky, but Klein's gaze remained fixed on Lisbeth. Her face was a mix of awe and happiness, and he couldn't help but smile despite his inner turmoil.
After the fireworks ended, the crowd began to disperse. Klein and Lisbeth lingered, reluctant to break the spell of the moment. Lisbeth turned to him, her face still flushed with excitement. "That was amazing, wasn't it, Klein? I've never seen anything like it!"
Klein smiled, her enthusiasm infectious. "Yeah, it was incredible," he replied, his voice softer than usual. He wanted to tell her then and there, to confess his feelings, but the words caught in his throat.
As they started looking for their friends, Lisbeth continued to chatter excitedly about the fireworks, oblivious to Klein's internal struggle. He decided to hold back his confession, choosing instead to savor the depth of his feelings. There would be a time for words, but for now, he wanted to enjoy this newfound clarity and hope for what the future might bring.
Reuniting with their friends, they shared their favorite moments from the fireworks. Klein stole glances at Lisbeth, a mix of apprehension and excitement in his heart. He didn't know what the future held, but he was sure of one thing: his feelings for Lisbeth had changed everything.
Late 2026 – Alfheim Online
The market square in Alfheim Online (ALO) was alive with celebration. Luminescent flowers adorned the paths, casting a magical glow on the bustling crowd. Floating lights danced above, adding a festive sparkle to the joyous atmosphere. Among the merriment, players from all over ALO gathered, their laughter and cheers creating a symphony of happiness.
Standing with her friends, Lisbeth watched as Kirito pulled out a small, exquisitely crafted ring. Her breath caught in her throat, it was the very ring she had helped him acquire. As Kirito slipped it onto Asuna's finger, they shared a tender kiss, sealing their commitment to each other. The crowd erupted in cheers, but to Lisbeth, the joyous noise felt hollow and distant. She forced a smile, her voice trembling slightly as she teased, "Geez, you lovebirds get a room."
Asuna and Kirito, lost in their moment, didn't hear her. Lisbeth felt a painful tightness in her chest, the reality of her unrequited love hitting her harder than she had anticipated. "Well... I guess we should give them their space," she said, her voice barely steady. Without waiting for a response, she turned and flew off into the night sky, her wings beating rapidly as she sought solitude to nurse her broken heart.
Klein, standing a few steps away, noticed Lisbeth's abrupt departure. Concern etched across his face, he activated his wings and took off after her, calling her name into the wind. " Liz! Wait up!"
He found her on a secluded cliff overlooking the digital ocean. The moonlight reflected off the water's surface, creating a serene, starry expanse. Klein landed gently beside her, his breath heavy from the chase. " Liz... why'd you take off like that? Everyone was wondering where you went."
Lisbeth, her gaze fixed on the horizon, barely whispered, "I just needed to get away... to think."
Klein stepped closer, his voice soft and filled with concern. "It's because of Kirito and Asuna, isn't it? I saw you helped him with that ring."
Lisbeth turned to face him, tears glistening in her eyes. "Yeah, I did. It's stupid, isn't it? Helping the guy you love deepen his relationship with someone else. I thought I was okay with it, Klein... I really did."
Upon hearing this, Klein felt a jolt through his heart. He stood still, the weight of her words hitting him harder than he expected. "Oh, Liz..." he said, his voice catching.
Lisbeth's tears flowed freely now. "It's just… Every time I see them together, I tell myself it's fine, that I'm fine. But seeing that ring on her finger, something in me just... broke."
Klein listened, each word sinking deep. He had no idea the depth of her feelings, and now, faced with her pain, he struggled to find the right words, his own emotions tangled. "I... I didn't know it was like that for you," he said after a long pause, his voice barely audible.
Lisbeth let out a bitter laugh, wiping her eyes. "Why would you? I've always kept it to myself. Always smiling, always the cheerful Lisbeth, right?"
Klein took a step closer but stopped, unsure. " Lisbeth, I..."
Lisbeth shook her head, interrupting him. "I don't know why I'm even telling you this. I guess I just needed someone to know. Someone who might understand what it's like to... to care about someone who sees you as nothing more than a friend."
Klein felt a pang of empathy mixed with his own concealed affection, understanding more than she realized. He moved closer, his own emotions held tightly in check, and simply offered his presence. "I'm here for you, Liz. No matter what," he said softly after a moment of silence.
Lisbeth sighed, a small, grateful smile emerging. "Thank you, Klein. That means a lot to me."
They sat together in silence, watching the digital waves crash against the cliff. The rhythmic sound of the waves and the cool night breeze provided a soothing backdrop to their shared moment. After a while, Klein broke the silence, turning to Lisbeth with a gentle smile. "Hey, how about we go to that karaoke bar I found? I think a bit of singing might cheer you up." Lisbeth looked at him, her eyes still glistening but now filled with a hint of curiosity. She nodded, a small smile forming on her lips. "Sure, Klein. That sounds nice."
"How about this place, huh? Perfect for our superstar debut," Ryoutaro joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Rika managed a small smile, appreciating his effort. "Yeah, it's nice."
The karaoke bar was lively, with the sounds of laughter and off-key singing spilling from various booths. Ryoutaro and Rika found their private booth, dimly lit with soft, colorful lights that set a relaxing mood. At first, Rika seemed reserved, scrolling through the song list without much enthusiasm.
To break the ice and lighten the mood, Ryoutaro picked a classic heartbreak ballad, something with powerful lyrics but also a touch of melodrama. He started singing with exaggerated emotion, hitting dramatic poses, and making silly faces.
"This one goes out to all the broken hearts out there!" he announced, winking at Rika.
Rika watched Ryoutaro's performance, initially with a raised eyebrow and a reluctant smile. As he continued, clearly not caring about how silly he looked, her smile became genuine, and she began to laugh.
"You're a natural, Ryoutaro. Ever thought about taking this on the road?" she teased.
Ryoutaro grinned, handing her the second microphone. "Only if you join me. Come on, let's make it a duet."
Encouraged by his antics, Rika picked up the microphone and joined in. Her voice, at first tentative, soon blended with Ryoutaro's as they laughed through the lyrics.
"Okay, okay. Let's see what you've got next," she said, flipping through the song list with renewed enthusiasm.
Energized by their first duet, Rika started selecting more songs—each expressing themes of moving on, strength, and sometimes just fun and absurdity. They sang together, sometimes shouting the lyrics, pouring all their pent-up emotions into the performance.
Ryoutaro noticed the change in her. "Now that's the Rika I know," he said between songs.
"Thanks, Ryoutaro. This... this is exactly what I needed," she admitted, her eyes shining with gratitude.
The music and the act of singing helped them connect on a deeper level, sharing their vulnerabilities and supporting each other. Hours passed by as they continued their musical spree, oblivious to the passage of time. By the time they decided to call it a night, both were laughing, breathless, and admittedly, a bit hoarse.
"This was fun, Ryoutaro. I haven't laughed this much in ages," Rika said as they left the booth.
Ryoutaro gave her a warm smile. "We should do this more often. Who knew karaoke could be such good therapy?"
"Definitely," Rika agreed, her spirits visibly lifted. "Thanks for tonight. I really needed it."
The next morning, Ryoutaro and Rika texted each other, joking about their hoarse voices and the wild night of singing.
Rika: "Voice is totally gone, but totally worth it. Thanks, Ryoutaro. I feel so much lighter."
Ryoutaro: "Anytime, Rika. Karaoke therapy sessions are officially a thing now. Same time next week?"
Rika: "Absolutely. Can't wait!"
