A Most Ridiculous Notion
It's funny. Everyone thinks I'm the most confident woman they've ever met and yet here I am shaking like a leaf, failing to knock on a door for the last seven minutes. Yoruichi examines her shaking hands and stares at her current nemesis - a door.
A door to a study. One could call it a study door.
A sturdy study door. In a doorway. Where doors belong… after all - where else would you find a door - what the hell am I thinking! Yoruichi shakes her head to try and dispel the bundle of fear spilling around inside her.
It's a door, just a door - that happens to lead to my father's study - Yoruichi subconsciously took a step backwards, thus eliminating a good deal of the progress she had made in approaching the door in the first place.
Oh god, don't think about him! Door, it's a door only. I have to open the door before it becomes super scary.
Yoruichi continued her mental coaching and forced herself to move forward however her arm froze midair, her fingertips barely out of reach from the door handle.
I see this man every day - well every other day… okay maybe once or twice a week sometimes, he's busy after all but still, seeing him is a regular occurrence. Why is his door so terrifying now? Yoruichi already knew why, she was going to tell him a secret. A very important one about herself that could possibly result in him expelling her from the family, see, no big deal right? Facing the idea of being homeless all because of one conversation?
"Exactly how much longer are you going to remain blocking the door?" Yoruichi visibly leapt at hearing the very man she wanted to see speak from behind her. "I do have work to do if I intend to join the family dinner tonight."
"H-how - Father - I - pffft err -" Yoruichi laughed mentally if all the ones who called her clear and decisive - especially if her little buzzing bumble bee could see her stuttering and stumbling like the day they confessed their feelings to one another.
"Have you forgotten how to speak as well as how to open doors?" She stared at her father as he did his best to hide a smirk.
"Are you making fun of me right now?"
"It's that or I become mildly concerned that you are suffering from some sort of health issue." His usual stoic expression softened slightly at the clear visible distress Yoruichi was in. "You were raised better than this afterall, never show weakness in front of others."
"Not even in my own home?" In a weird way, being reprimanded allowed Yoruichi to regain control of herself. Her father, noting the change, nodded to her, took the lead and opened the door to his study.
"Only when alone or with someone you trust." He beckoned for her to follow him inside.
"Do you trust mum?" Yoruichi couldn't see his expression since he was walking away from her but his tone left no room for her to doubt his response.
"Don't ask idiotic questions. Of course I do." He sat down at his desk and indicated for her to sit down in the chair opposite him.
"It's not a stupid question. I don't know the ins and outs of your relationship together." Yoruichi quipped back while her brain was yelling at her to not be argumentative. The idea was to flatter him, ask about his day and then when asking about his day, slip in the fact that she was gay and oh, was dating someone. Yeah normal every day father and daughter conversations after all, no big deal. Being royalty has no effect on this matter whatsoever. Nope, not one bit. Yoruichi clenched her trembling hands together.
"That's because we maintain a united front," His strong dark brown eyes studied her own anxious filled ones that refused to meet his gaze. "Is this why you have come to me this evening? To ask about my relationship with your mother?"
"I - " Yorucihi bit her lip and contemplated sitting on her hands to stop them from shaking. "I hadsomethingIwantedto-"
"Stop. Do not mumble. Take a deep breath. Exhale and try again." Yoruichi flinched at first but when she heard his tone, it was surprisingly… full of patience. She looked up into his eyes for the first time since they entered his study and noted not one bit of annoyance in any of his features.
"Am - am I someone you trust?" Yoruichi used every technique that had been drilled into her since birth to watch for any kind of change in his relaxed disposition and saw none. That or he's too damned good at maintaining his mask.
He did not answer her.
The silence made Yoruichi's anxiety increase tenfold.
"I trust you as a daughter. I do not trust you in any power of position as of yet. You are still far too young and have no experience for me to draw any examples of."
"That… makes sense." Yoruichi's moment of elation at his words passed at being criticized. A frown formed across her face when she thought of all the hard work she put in at school to be told she is not trusted in that way. "I'm top of my class, you know that right?"
"Academic wise, yes you are meeting my expectations."
"Meeting your expectations - what do I have to do - you know what, nevermind. You said you trust me, right?"
"I do not like to repeat myself but yes, that is what I said. What is this about?"
"Could - could you remember that and maybe promise to not kick me out of the house or banish me from the family before I continue?"
"There is nothing you could do that would ever make me banish you from the family." he stated calmly. Yoruichi laughed nervously at this despite desperately wanting to believe it.
"Oh I dunno, you may think differently if it has something to do with the fact that I'm gay." Yoruichi shut her eyes, unwilling to see the calm expression turn to one of anger or hate. "That - I yeah, I am gay, I like women - I thought you should know."
"I am already aware of this." His voice was neutral.
"So before you kick me out, could I at least have some time to pack - wait what?" Yoruichi's brain finally processed what her father had said - her eyes snapped open to stare back at him.
"Must I repeat myself again?" he sighed although again, she saw no flicker of anger or annoyance. Well maybe at him having to repeat himself but to her great big secret. Nothing. "I said I am already aware of your preference towards women. To be honest it has become fairly obvious as the years passed by. Your mother is aware of this news too.
Yoruichi did her best impression of a goldfish as she sat there opening and closing her mouth repeatedly.
"In fact she will be delighted to know it has been confirmed. If I remember correctly, I now owe her two thousand yen."
"You - You guys placed a bet?" Yoruichi 's nerves were still going haywire that she didn't know if she should be laughing or crying right now.
"We often place bets. It is quite entertaining but back to the topic at hand, was this all you had to tell me?"
"I - well, yeah sorta. I - I am dating someone if that counts as extra news?" Yoruichi wondered if they had a bet on that as well but she was more focused on if she was going to be kicked out of the house or not.
"Really? We could arrange a dinner for you to introduce her if you feel ready for that step." her father opened his personal diary and began flipping through the pages for a day where he would be free to set this meeting up.
"We- we became official a few months ago - I - I think that's a little too fast right now." Yoruichi leapt to her feet in protest.
"I see, " her father shut his book and his eyes found a new intensity as he studied her startled yet flushed face. "A few months you say?" Yoruichi nodded back in confirmation, he hadn't told her to get out of the house yet but she was yet to hear any kind of approval statement as of yet so she was still unsure where she stood with her dad as of yet.
"This is a little concerning. If you were a son, I'd be addressing the matter of intimacy and the risks of said acts although… I suppose a child out of wedlock is not an issue for you or her so I'll admit, I'm a little unprepared on how to handle that matter."
"I- pfft, what - Dad!" Yoruichi spluttered and felt her face turn a deeper shade of red. What the hell is happening right now?
"I will only ask that you conduct yourself in a manner befitting your name and title by keeping such activities outside of the public eye." The smirk that spread across his lips at the sight of Yoruichi's continued blushing goldfish impression. "After all, I was once a young teenager myself. I do remember what it's like when everything is brand new and exciting. Your mother and I could barely keep our hands off one another."
"Please stop talking right now." Yoruichi did her best to not picture her father going at it with her mum.
"I have said all I needed to say on that matter so yes, if that was all you have to say. You may leave now." He did his best to suppress a chuckle at the sight of his daughter getting more than she bargained for when she planned this conversation out in her head.
"I - it was umm. Wait so… we're good right?" Yoruichi needed to have it spelled out to her at this point. She had far too much information bombarded at her right now to walk away without an official answer.
"Yes Yoruichi, we are good as you say." His steady, warm gaze met hers, his smirk from teasing her was still present, "Honestly as if you thought I'd banish you for something as trivial as that."
"Well - Hey I dunno - you see horror stories of these conversations and I can't imagine us being royals helps in that regard." Yoruichi mumbled her excuses for fearing the worst.
"You are my daughter Yoruichi. Nothing will change the fact that I love you." Yoruichi's heart gave out on hearing those words and so did her legs. She collapsed into the chair and did nothing but breathe, tears formed in her eyes but she did what she could to blink them away. Her father's smirk turned into a smile, it lasted a few seconds and then he busied himself with pulling out his work folder. "You may stay as long as you like but if we are to attend dinner as a family, I must work now."
"I'm not homeless." Yoruichi stated, happy tears forming in her eyes at being accepted and for not having to go live in the streets as she watched him begin to work.
"A most ridiculous notion." he shook his head at her silly fears.
"I - I love you too." Yoruichi whispered back to him and saw his penmanship pause briefly before he continued.
A/N: There I did it, the impossible can happen - a mini story where Yoruichi's dad is not a bad guy!
Honestly though a huge shout out to all parents that accept their children, my own dad included (which is what I based this conversation on although minus the office, being royalty and the speech was less formal etc
Hope you enjoy!
