Episode 3: Chapter 1
The burning down of the Leigh house and the deaths of the Leigh parents were still causing a buzz around the school. Despite collapsing after saving Sophie, Kyle Sherman was okay, as was Sophie herself, although they needed to checked out at hospital regardless. There was still no sign of any progress in the police investigation. It was a few months afterwards and the birds were chirping outside as the gentle air of spring settled on the town. This meant that the changes certain boys had made to their uniforms, switching from shorts to slacks, had now switched back to shorts. Those boys were Louis Sulieman, who was was tall with dreadlocked dark brown hair and brown eyes, light brown skin and a lanky build, Marlon Chase, a tall blonde boy with his hair in a messy mullet, blue eyes and fair skin with a normal broad-shouldered build. Omar Silverstein, a slightly chubby dark skinned young man with brown afro hair, brown eyes and a casual smile, Kenny Jr., better known to them as Duck, who was lanky with short brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin with prominent ears. The final boy who normally wore shorts but had switched to slacks for winter was Tenn Leigh, a dark skinned boy with short cut black hair and black eyes and a burn scar on the right side of his face. Said scar had nothing to do with the fire however, he had said scar from before even being adopted by the Leigh family. He had luckily survived the fire thanks to his other sister, Sophie Leigh's twin, Minerva Leigh.
Apart from Tenn, who had not arrived yet, Kyle had spotted all of those boys as they passed to head to their lockers, they shared greetings and Kyle was happy to see his friends again. Kyle was a tall young man at five foot eleven, he had close cropped reddish-brown hair, olive green eyes and tanned skin, he had a barely noticeable five o'clock shadow and a normal broad-shouldered build. He was waiting for the Leigh family to arrive, anxious to see Sophie again, as things had been hectic following the fire, namely trying to find a place for the Leigh siblings to live together, not to mention Minerva continuing her unfair aversion to Kyle, which had become even worse since Kyle and Sophie had started dating. He tried to relieve the tension by rotating his shoulders, but it didn't do much. He thought about texting her, but put it out his mind, thinking that she should show up soon. Another change due to the warmer weather was that the girls now swapped their thick tights for knee socks, as shown by two girls who passed by Kyle, also greeting him warmly, two more friends of his and also a couple. They were Clementine Everett, a five foot one girl, with medium length curly dark brown hair, golden brown eyes framed with long lashes, her skin was a pleasing caramel shade and she had an athletic build and Violet Adlon, a girl around five foot two, yet despite that she had long legs, shown by her uniform. She also had short somewhat stringy blonde hair with heavy bangs, pale skin and green eyes with strong features.
"They're just coming, Kyle." Clementine told him reassuringly.
Kyle started but then smiled. "Thanks Clem."
Violet smiled too and nodded, her hand linked with Clem's.
He spotted two more boys he was friends with first, Mitch Daymond, tall with short but messy brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin, along with a normal but broad shouldered build, and Willy Cowden, who was somewhat below medium height with short brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin, fairly skinny. Then a girl who was part of their friend group, a girl with short but thick black hair that didn't quite reach her shoulders, olive toned skin with soft brown eyes behind red framed slightly thick glasses, she was skinny, rather petite named Sarah Chaikin. Then the Leigh family arrive, Tenn of course was there, accompanied by his sisters, Sophie and Minerva. Both girls were tall with lanky builds, notably long legs as shown by their school skirts and knee high socks, pale skin, green eyes and red hair, this was the key difference between the girls. Sophie wore her hair long while Minerva had hers short with the left side shaved and a scar on her right eyebrow. Seeing Kyle Minerva snorted and pointedly ignored him, but let out a small snarl when, defying her orders to them, Tenn and Sophie approached Kyle.
"Hi Kyle." Tenn greeted him politely, friendly.
Kyle grinned. "Hey Tenn, good to see you buddy."
The two exchanged some small pleasantries before Tenn then headed off to join his friends.
Seeing Minerva stalk off, Kyle and Sophie shared a small smile and then Sophie bum rushed him and caught him in a tight embrace. Kyle immediately smiled and squeezed her just as tight. Finally, the two teens pulled away and exchanged "I missed yous".
"Are you alright, I...I'm sorry, I meant to-" He burst out.
She tightened the hug. "I'm fine, I'm sorry. We did our best to stay in touch, don't worry about it."
"But after all that happened, I should've done more. We called, we saw each other on occasion." Kyle replied. "I should've been there to support you after, after…"
"After mom and dad died. We were all pretty messy and things were hectic. But what matters is we tried." She explained. "We're doing better now, we have new living arrangements and I can work around them, don't worry about it. Now we can look forward to this."
They then kissed and shared a moment before quickly getting what they needed from their lockers and began heading to the school's main hall. They saw other members of their friend groups. A boy with brown skin, brown afro hair, brown eyes and a somewhat chubby build of medium height, Omar Silverstein. The remaining four were two boys and two girls, two couples, they were Gabriel Garcia who was with his girlfriend Brody Burress, Gabe was a moderately tall with medium length messy brown hair and brown eyes, tanned skin and somewhat lanky. Brody around medium height, fair skinned with long auburn hair tied back in a ponytail, light blue eyes and a slender curvy build with long legs. The other two were a boy, somewhat tall, with dark skin hinting at an Indian heritage, short black hair and black eyes and a girl who was somewhat short with short red hair, blue eyes and pale freckled skin and had a chubby and admittedly busty build, which also showed mainly on her legs, they were, respectively, Aasim Rajan and Ruby Hillis.
Finally, after a pause, he asked.
"What about you guys? Where are all of you staying?"
Sophie turned her attention to her locker to grab some of her things. "They wanted to send us to a foster home. We worried they would split us up, especially Tenn, but we convinced them to stay with our cousin. It's not the same but at least we're all together."
Kyle sighed. "That's great. After the fire... I was worried I wouldn't see you in school or anything again."
Kyle immediately felt bad for bringing up the fire. A look came over Sophie's face that she couldn't mask in time. He couldn't imagine what it was like to lose both parents in such a devastating way.
Quickly enough, Sophie swallowed down her grief and leaned over to kiss Kyle on the cheek. "I wouldn't be in school or even alive if it weren't for you. I couldn't thank you en-"
"Mr. Sherman!"
The outcry came from behind him. Sophie slyly witnessed Kyle roll his eyes as Carver came storming up behind her boyfriend, his face as red as a tomato, and a purple vein pulsating at his forehead.
"Keep your filthy hands off of other students!" Carver inserted himself in between the couple.
Baffled, Sophie took several steps back. She was utterly confused on how Mr. Carver suddenly became so emotional.
Kyle merely raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by Carver's outrage. "Nothing inappropriate was going on."
Carver pointed an accusatory finger inches from the teen boy's chin. "Don't you dare disrespect m-".
"Mr. Carver! What the hell is going on?"
Mr. Sanders came out of his classroom, obviously hearing the confrontation going on. Students had stopped what they were doing as stared at the three men standing in a triangle. None of the students particularly liked Carver, but they knew better than to question his authority. They were thankful that Mr. Sanders was there to sort it out. Carver stuttered as if he was surprised to see another authority figure intervene. He recovered quickly enough and attempted to acquire his poker face, but it was far too late.
"This boy was attempted to assault this young woman!" He snarled, his gaze flicking to Sophie and she could have sworn it lingered on her bare legs for just a moment too long.
Mr. Sanders only made a "hmph" noise in the back of his throat. "The only thing Mr. Sherman is guilty of is being potentially late to class, which only you seem to be giving him the opportunity to do so. Besides, don't you have a class that you need to be attending to, Mr. Carver?"
Carver looked back and forth from Mr. Sanders, who wore a bored expression, to Kyle, who couldn't help but looked smug, and then at the students, before deciding he was losing this battle, but he would not lose the war.
"Indeed, Mr. Sanders. But, you, Mr. Sherman. Keep your nose clean, or I will clean it for you."
"Right, whatever," Kyle muttered under his breath as Carver walked away.
Mr. Sanders watched Carver disappear into his classroom before approaching the couple. "I'm not sure why Mr. Carver reacted the way he did, but what said is true. Please get to class."
With that, the teacher left. Kyle and Sophie shrugged before they walked hand in hand. They weren't sure why Carver hated Kyle so much, but they were determined to get to the bottom of it and to get to the bottom of whoever was behind the attacks on Sophie and her family.
