Overseeing an Unusual Tail
Chapter 1
I recently got back into Fairy Tail and started imaging this story idea. And I'll admit, I'm mostly using it as a way to build up ideas for my Overseers comic idea and how they operate. And playing into a show I remember the dub only reaching 48 episodes. How time flies. But now its time to begin the show.
(No POV)
Crocus was in dire need of more heroes and fighters. At the end of the Seventh Grand Magic Games, disaster struck in the form of an invasion. And invasion of dragons. Led by a person that surprised everyone. An older version of the Wizard Guild Sabretooth's Rogue. Who had taken control of the beasts and was laying waste to the city. Killing many in the process, even those wizards who were trying to defend the town.
In desperation to try and change fate, Ultear Milkovich used an absolute last resort of her Arc of Time magic. "I'm ready to do it. Time's Arc! Last Ages!" Ultear shouts as her magic engulfs the world and consumes her time. But this has a ripple effect that she did not expect to come.
In a different dimension, a mage in Chicago Illinois was bringing a gang of Leprechauns in. "Heck of a second bust for you two," the slightly older man leading the team who brought down the gang of extorters and loan sharks. This man was Horatio DeLuca, a City Overseer captain, Hereditary Mage, and team leader with the Chicago branch of the Overseers. Working to maintain peace and balance between magical humans, mythical beings, and the normal humans of their world.
He had a silver streak at the base of his black hair and a goatee that was a bit longer. He was relatively tall, about six foot two inches tall. He was not muscular, instead having a wiry build beneath his suit and cloak. In one hand he had a staff that he often kept hidden or retracted in public and at his side was a wand just in case he lost his staff.
"No joke. You rookies had to deal with some crazy stuff. Too bad that included a bit of bad luck," the second in command of the team Allison Meyer said with a chuckle. She was much younger than her boss, but that didn't keep her from being a very capable mage herself. Though in her case she was an Awakened Mage. She had cool blue hair that contrasted with her tan skin and was roughly average in height, standing five foot six inches. She was also wearing a suit, but instead of a staff or wand, her weapons of choice were a sword and gun combination.
The sword being a blade that looked like it was made of lava and obsidian, and the gun being a steampunk esque shotgun with gold accents and flame like elements worked into the metal. "Tell me about it. I wasn't betting on getting my backside getting set on fire," the pale green-haired Slyvester H. Silvana said with a glare towards his fellow new Overseer. He was a Hereditary Mage as well, and specialized in wind magics. He wore more of a tunic like getup for his top, but also had modern pants and shoes on.
Which didn't work so well with his fellow new Overseer, Reiya Victoria Li Beaufoy. Who rubbed the back of her head before apologizing to the young man. She was a newly Awakened Mage and was wearing street clothes compared to the somewhat more professional or magical looks the rest of her squad had. "It wasn't on purpose I swear! Forgive me?" she said while clapping her hands together and bowing. Which annoyed the green haired young man because even with her bowing, she was still taller than him. Him being barely five feet tall, and she was close to six feet in height.
He let out an annoyed sigh before saying he was going to write his report. "Don't let it get to you Vicky. You're both still new and there's bound to be moments when you get mad at each other." Allison said with a pat of the younger girl's back. Horatio shook his head and advised the rest to do the same as Slyvester. "I need to meet with Cam and see what he's figured out as far as some of the magics they were using," the man said as a few other Overseers came to book the Leprechauns.
He went to a separate section of the office and met with Cameron Betel, the Awakened Mage forensic analyst and researcher for the Chicago branch. An African descent man who wasn't much taller than Slyvester. Who was wearing a lab coat like robe over his clothes and had glasses on while working. "Hey Cap. What's going on?" he asked after one of his familiars passed him a report on a side project of his. The older man smiled before saying, "found some odd pieces of magic while raiding that gang hideout. Can you take a look?"
"Sure thing. I'll get to it eventually." Cam said with a slightly dismissive wave of his hand. Horatio let out a sigh before saying, "this needs to be priority. I think these are Morda's handiwork." Hearing that name causes the analyst to freeze and he rapidly puts aside all his other work to focus on the pieces of paper that Horatio had brought.
He went back to check on his team, but they were all engrossed in their work at the moment. So, he shrugged and did the same with writing post operation reports. "Nice work on that bust there Mr. Void Mage." Horatio hears behind him before grunting. Turning to see the chief of the branch standing over him. He was a minotaur man who was chewing on something before swallowing.
Horatio sighs and asked what the man needed. "I don't need something. Not now anyway. I was just congratulating you," the Chief said before taking a sip of his tea. He then mentioned that the bust might have some repercussions in time, given the state of the Leprechaun Mob in Chicago. "But we should be okay with you and the others around. You, me, and her are some of the main deterrents after all," the minotaur said before gesturing to another squad leader.
The man doesn't dignify the statement and tries to finish work. Only to receive a call from Cameron. "Hey, could you bring your team down here? I'd like your help with something I found," the analyst said with an uneasy tone. Horatio was concerned about this but did as the man asked. Calling shouting to Allison to grab her gear. "Expecting trouble in our own office?"
"This is something Morda made. Who knows what it could do." Horatio says before advising the rookies to be ready. Slyvester looks down and frowns a little but follows along with a quick pace to his steps. While Reiya grumbling a little as she was feeding her familiars when they were called.
Once they reached the forensic laboratory, Cameron was pacing back and forth. "Oh, good you're here. So, we might have a little problem…." Cam said with a worried look on his face. And that look was shared once they all heard a crackling of energy and what they thought might be a small explosion.
They all looked past Cam and saw that part of the lab was suddenly consumed by a strange magical sphere. Jaws were dropped as the sphere had been opened and was growing behind the Awakened Mage. "So, yeah. I was just analyzing the magic circles and trying to figure out what they do….. and then this happened. I don't even know how it happened!" he explained in a panic.
Horatio cursed before trying to remember what he saw on the circles. 'That way I can nullify the magic. Maybe…. That could work!' he thought before giving his orders. "Rei. Sly. You two work on either side to try and reduce the size of the sphere. Allison, get behind and try the same. Cam keep me covered until I can make my void zone."
The mages all nod and take their places around the magic sphere. Each using their magics to restrain the spell from growing even more while the captain works on nullifying the magic. "That should do it! Null Zone!" Horatio says with a clap of his hands to disable the magic. However, at that moment, something changed.
As if a ripple beyond what any of them could understand happened, the sphere changed, and Horatio could no longer nullify it's power. Exemplified by all of them being dragged towards the sphere. Each of the mages tried to hold themselves in place but could not resist the pull of the magic before them. "Shit. Guess we'll find out where this leads." Horatio says as he starts flying toward the sphere.
Just as the pain from casting the Last Ages spell was subsiding, Ultear realized that all it had done was turn back time one minute. That one minute though was enough to save numerous lives. While at the same time, causing a ripple to bring new allies to the battlefield.
Horatio and the others were dropped in a block far from the center of Crocus with people screaming all around them. "What the Hell? Where are we?" Cameron asked while picking up his broken glasses. Using a quick repair spell to fix them. But they broke again when he dropped them at the sight before him. "Those are….. very big dragons," he said in shock. His collegues agreed while looking around the ruined square they were in.
With Slyvester spotting something shocking. "Over here! She's injured!" he called out before running to a woman collapsed on the ground. She looked as though she had been burned and was barely holding on. The green haired young man turned her over before trying a few healing spells to help her recover. But both he and Horatio were shocked by something they sense.
"She…. She sacrificed herself. Her life or lifespan. She gave it all up. For something." Horatio said with his eyes wide. The woman looked at him with her bleary red eyes. She asked who they were, but it was a language they couldn't understand. "Hold on ma'am. I think I can heal you somewhat." Slyvester said before creating a healing circle.
Ultear groaned as she felt some of the effects. While she was though, Cameron and Horatio used a translation spell to try and understand what was going on. They worked fast, but they couldn't translate everything right away. But it was enough for them to know these people needed help. "And I don't think we can hold back like we normally do in Chicago. So go all out. Use everything you have! Reiya get this lady somewhere safer. The rest of you split up and help wherever you are needed!" Horatio says with a gesture of his hands.
That is until he spots a number of small silver lizard like creatures. He quickly takes stock of them and realizes that they are all roughly about the same type. "Well. I guess I can take care of these easily enough. Get moving!" the captain says with a small smile directed the monsters way.
A quick "roger" from his squad and they all hurried off. Reiya used one of her familiars to keep cooling the burns on Ultear's body and got her somewhere same. Horatio meanwhile takes a breath before weaving his specialty into another spell he was casting. And right as the army of mini dragons was leaping at him, he opened his eyes and shouted "SHATTER!" at the top of his lungs.
In an instant, fifty of the beasts did just that as nothing was left of the bodies once he was done. The man smiled before using some magic to make himself move faster through the battlefield. Blasting various little dragons easily with his magic. 'Their magic signatures are each a little different, but the core is all the same. Meaning I can use my Void spell to negate their magic. Which has the benefit of breaking them down as well.' Horatio surmises in his mind while blasting away at the mini dragons with his staff.
As Erza Scarlet and Jellal Fernandez were about to be surrounded again, Allison drew her sword and quickly cut down six of the beasts. "Duck down!" she shouted to the pair (even if they didn't understand). Once they did, she created a series of small magic explosive spheres in her hand and tossed them at the other lizards. "Chain Detonation Purge!" she called out as she took aim with her gun. A massive explosion engulfed the area to the shock of everyone.
"Whoa! Is there another fire dragon down there?! Or someone from our guild?" Natsu Dragneel asked while riding atop Atlas Flame. "Definitely not one of us. But something does feel strange. This power….. It is almost as primeval as myself. And just as destructive," the blazing dragon said to Natsu as he flew to reengage Motherglare.
Erza and Jellal panicked a little as their clothing and bandages were singed in the attack. But they regained enough composure to thank Allison. "Who are you? Are you with the army or a guild?" Erza asked while wincing from the pain in her foot. Allison cocked her head to the side since she couldn't follow everything they said. Thinking for a moment before using flames to write in the air that she was there to help.
She also demonstrated that she didn't speak the language that the Earthland wizards were speaking before kneeling down. She looked at Erza's injuries before humming and then snapping. "What are you doing?" Erza asked and blushed as the woman was eyeing her up a little. Only for her and Jellal to panic when Allison pulled out her sword and stabbed Erza in the foot.
"OW! Hey! I thought you were here to help not…. Wait… The pain. Its subsiding." Erza said as she initially felt the burning pain of the fire. With another wave of fire, Allison wrote out, "I'm using one of my familiars to help heal you. But it will take a toll. You really should lay down after this is done." Jellal chuckled before saying, "now even random people are telling you to take it easy. Maybe you should take the advice."
Erza blushed and pouted before thanking Allison. Who nodded before brandishing her sword once more. Rushing off in a burst of fire and some earth magic. Something that Allison had said (or written) though had the pair confused. "What did she mean by familiar?" Erza asked as Jellal helped to get her to a safe place. The man hummed and said, "I'm not sure. Maybe it's a type of magic we've never seen or heard of before."
Slyvester flew above the battle on the winds before spotting a man with wild black hair who was fighting a dragon. He seemed to be struggling so the green haired man gave him a hand. "Aeolus Hammer!" Slyvester called out and summoned a huge wind funnel that impacted on the back of the dragon.
The black-haired Iron Dragon Slayer Gajeel Redfox was stunned by this. Especially because the magic actually knocked the dragon to the ground. Leaving it open to a slash from his Iron Dragon Sword. 'I thought only we Dragon Slayers could do something like that. Who is this guy?' he thought before taking a deep breath to unleash his Iron Dragon Roar.
And the attack shredded some of the scales on the purple dragon he was fighting. That was because it wasn't his force alone that impacted the beast. "Hurracan Force!" Slyvester called out with a gesture of his fingers. The spell allowed him to concentrate the power of a hurricane's winds, and he was skilled enough with the spell that he could narrow the effect. All the better to puncture the body of the dragon with Gajeel's iron.
"I don't know who you are, but man I am glad you showed up!" the Dragon Slayer said with a thumbs up to Slyvester. Who blushed a little before writing in the air. At first Gajeel assumed it was like Solid Script. But then he noticed that it was full sentences. Narrowing his eyes he could tell what the man wanted to say.
Levy McGarden was equally shocked but assuredly glad for the help. "Can you do anything else?" she wrote in the air. Which made Slyvester sweatdrop as he couldn't read what she was writing. Responding, "it's not that I can't talk or can't hear. I just don't know your language well enough to speak it. I can understand it though." This makes Levy blush while Gajeel has a little laugh at her expense.
In another section of the city of Crocus, Wakaba Mine, Macao and Romeo Conbolt and a number of other mages were shocked by a new arrival. To a bit of annoyance of one though. "Hey, don't steal my spotlight!" Mattan Ginger shouts as Reiya leaps in. Burning and freezing far more of the monsters than the girl could. And one of her attacks gets out of control and impacts on the head of the Rock Dragon that Cobra was fighting.
"My bad!" she shouted with a rub of the back of her neck. Cobra though was thankful for some of that. As it stunned the dragon he was on enough that he could unload more attacks and break through it's scales. 'Don't know how she did that, but it's useful. I've got a bad feeling though from all these voices.' Cobra thinks while trying to poison his foe.
Camron meanwhile stumbled upon Jura Neekis and the members of his guild Lamia Scale and the women of Mermaid Hell. As the Wizard Saint used his Iron Rock spells to attack and restrain the various little dragons. Meanwhile, Kagura Mikazuchi uses her Gravity Magic and sword to cut down a number of the monsters.
The Awakened Mage hummed while adjusting his glasses. "Interesting. It does seem as though these little dragons are not quite up to the bigger one's in many things. Let alone…. What you can do my friend." As he is saying this, a glow covers his glasses as a large dragon head appears next to him and unleashes a piercing stream of water that slices through numerous mini dragons. While also cutting all the buildings behind them to the edge of the city.
The wizards all turn back to see the man. Visages of three other beings appear around him. He then claps and spreads out a circle beneath this section of the battlefield. "Rise up! Geb!" Cameron says with a gesture of his fingers. Spearing many of the dragons he missed and even grabbing the dragon that the Sabertooth guild Shadow Dragon Slayer Rogue Cheney was fighting.
"What!? I can't break free!" the dragon shouted in anger and annoyance. Cameron shifts his hands once more before uttering, "Bore down. Righteousness." Suddenly a large beam of light drills into the back of the dragon. Causing it to cry out in pain. "Incredible. We couldn't even scratch the beast but this man has restrained and actually caused it pain!" Jura marveled as Cameron adjusted his glasses once more.
He worked on more of the translation spell thanks to the others talking around him and used it on himself. "I wouldn't say I defendats much. At best I murblemack him and gave him a black eye. I don't know enough of what I'm fellsijng with to defeat this type of dragon." Cameron said, at least to the ears of those around him.
Some were confused, but Kagura and Jura understood enough to guess what was going on. "You're not from around here and yet you still aid us. Thank you for that. With your power we will be fine." Jura said with a little bow. Cameron returns it before focusing back on the foes around him. Smiling before thinking, 'if you think I'm impressive, then this world's magic is a bit weaker. Especially compared to the Captain and Vice-Captain.'
Speaking of, while Allison was cutting through the little dragons pretty easily, Horatio was just walking through the hordes of beasts now. Some of them collapsed or seemed to lose all power once they got close to him. "I see. So that one up there is where their root comes from. Let's see how she likes this." Horatio says while more of the mini dragons leap at him. And then die as they get close. To the shock of Jet and Droy.
"Who is this guy? I don't know, but he's crazy powerful or has some power to take all of them out. Why is he looking up at that dragon? It's not like he's a Dragon Slayer, he can't fight it," they say back and forth as Horatio builds up his magic. Before he casts his spell though, he uses another to focus his sight atop the two dragons in the sky. Spying the pair of Dragon Slayers duking it out.
He hums before thinking aloud. "A magic that can counter the durability of these beasts and make the users immune to a specific element or similar. Interesting. But I think I can use aspects of that I can see to my advantage. Let alone the flaws I see in that dragon's hide."
The pair watch in awe as Horatio's magic builds to a level they could only compare to what they saw Jura on the third day of the games. The man thrusts his palms forward and unleashes a massive barrage stream of attacks directly at the underbelly of Motherglare. The dragon thinks little of this at first, assuming it would bounce right off her hide. Only to be painfully shocked when dozens of the impacts crack her diamond like scales and punch right into her.
She roars in pain and stumbles while flying, almost dropping the future version of Rogue off her back. "How! How could some random human hurt me!?" she roared in anger and pain. Atlas Flame laughed and said, "you shouldn't really underestimate humans! They have more strength than you may realize! Natsu!"
"Yeah! Let's do it Uncle!" Natsu yelled before leaping into Atlas Flame's claw. The future Rogue panics and tries to get Motherglare away from the probable attack. But she was too injured due to Horatio's spell and the other effect it had. Namely, it was weakening her magic from the inside out.
Atlas Flame throws Natsu with all his strength and the pink haired Slayer rockets towards his foe. Wreathed in flame as he calls out, "Fire Dragon Sword Horn!" ramming right into Rogue's stomach and rocketing him to the plaza where the Eclipse gate was sitting. "I'll not let you have all the fun boy!" Atlas Flame roars before charging and striking Motherglare in the side with all his might and sending her in the same direction.
This attack causes the superdense dragon to crash right into the Eclipse gate. Shattering it and undoing the disruption to the time stream caused by Future Rogue. Who warns Natsu of things to come and events that will unfold in time as his body glows due to the changes to the timestream. Natsu swearing he won't let that future come to pass; as Future Rogue disappears as well. "I wonder who it was that managed to hurt that dragon. I could only phase her." Natsu thought aloud as the dragons and mini dragons started disappearing from the city.
But not repairing it. Horatio hummed while looking around and deactivating his main spell. "I got a look at that woman's magical signature and how it operates. I may not know exactly know the gods of time here, but I can still make their power work thanks to her," the man said before taking off his suit jacket and cloak. Tapping his staff on the ground once to begin the building of his magic.
He breathed deep and chanted in a few languages from Earth while also calling to the gods of time from Earthland. His eyes closed in concentration before he felt the final connection. Horatio's eyes opened wide and he swept his hands all around. A magic circle engulfing the entire city of Crocus in a matter of seconds. And with that magic, Horatio reversed the damage done by the dragons over the last few hours.
Jet and Droy's jaws were on the ground upon seeing this and all of the destruction reversed. "Who is that old guy?" they both shouted in shock. While all around the city, life would return to normal sooner than expected. "Looks like the Captain is still got me beat." Cameron said with a look at the changes. Jura was shocked as well and asked, "who is this Captain? And who are you really sir?" The researcher hummed before smiling and saying, "we're Overseers. Magical guardians from another world entirely. Though now, I wonder what we'll be doing here."
There's my start for this story. I know it's a bit crazy given the wild power scales of Fairy Tail, let alone emotional power up stuff that is common to Mashima's tales. But I wanted to use this to see what others thought of my Overseers. It's a comic idea I built a long time ago and introduced in a My Hero Academia story. But I needed to branch out into other ideas from my comics.
That and I needed to get away from MHA a little bit. I've done almost nothing but stories with that series for three years now. So with the release of Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest, I'm hoping some of you folks will give my works a read. Please review!
