Chapter 2: Exploring A New Home
The morning sun illuminated the streets of Konoha with a golden light, casting soft shadows on the ancient buildings of the village. Naruto walked through the streets with quick steps, his expression a mix of nervousness and excitement. Beside him, Sasuki Uchiha maintained his usual stoic expression, although his dark eyes moved slightly, observing the path that led them to their new home.
It had only been a couple of days since the shocking revelation at the clan dinner. The idea of an arranged engagement between them was still difficult for both of them to accept, and although neither had mentioned it directly, the tension between them was palpable. However, as if fate were determined to push them together, that same morning Hiruzen Sarutobi had informed them that they would be moving to the main residence of the Senju Clan, a place that, according to him, symbolized the union between their lineages and the history of Konoha. .
Naruto hadn't stopped talking about the move since they had left the Hokage's office, but Sasuki had barely responded. As they walked, the high walls of the Senju grounds began to appear on the horizon. Surrounded by majestic trees and carefully maintained gardens, the main house of the Senju Clan stood out for its imposing size and traditional architecture. It was a relic of a time long past, when the Senju Clan, along with the Uchiha, had founded the hidden leaf village.
—Look at that, Sasuke! Naruto exclaimed, his eyes filled with wonder as they approached the entrance. It's huge! I never thought I would live in a place like this. It's like a palace!
Sasuke looked at the residence with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. Although she didn't show it, she was also impressed by the grandeur of the place. He knew that the Senju residence was a symbol of power in Konoha, a constant reminder of the alliance that had given rise to the village. However, she couldn't help but feel slight discomfort at the thought of living there with Naruto, someone she could barely tolerate sharing a team with, let alone a house.
"Not bad," Sasuki responded indifferently, although deep down he recognized that the place had an aura that he couldn't ignore. Although it's not the kind of place I expected.
Naruto, who was too busy staring at the facade of the house, didn't notice the distant tone in Sasuki's voice.
—Come on, let's go in! —Naruto said enthusiastically, opening the doors with a wide gesture—. I want to see what it's like inside.
Sasuke followed him, maintaining his reserved demeanor as he crossed the threshold. The door to the main residence opened with a slight creak, revealing a spacious hallway decorated with dark wood and rice paper accents. The interior of the house was as impressive as its exterior, with hallways stretching into seemingly endless rooms, high ceilings adorned with carved beams, and windows that let in soft daylight.
Naruto let out a whistle of admiration as he looked around.
—This is incredible! —he said, his voice echoing in the empty space—. I have never been in such a big house! It's like the whole village could fit in here.
Sasuke walked silently, running a hand along the nearby wall, feeling the texture of the polished wood beneath his fingers. The house had a sense of calm that contrasted with the bustle of Konoha. Although he wouldn't admit it easily, the idea of moving here was more attractive than he expected. Maybe, just maybe, he would find some peace in this place so far removed from the memories of his old home.
As they explored, Sasuki remembered a recent conversation with the Hokage, a talk that had taken place on the eve of the move. They were sitting in Hiruzen's office, surrounded by ancient scrolls and shelves full of documents chronicling the history of Konoha, Naruto reading about the Uzumakis with difficulty.
"Hokage-sama, I haven't been able to sleep well lately," Sasuki had admitted, keeping his tone as neutral as possible. Memories of my family... keep appearing in my dreams. I can't stop thinking about what happened.
Hiruzen had watched her with concern, his eyes filled with understanding. She knew that the weight of the tragedy that Sasuke had experienced was something that would never completely go away, but she also understood that she needed a change, something to help her find a new perspective.
"Sasuki, it's natural for you to have such feelings," Hiruzen had responded softly. But you must remember that you are not alone. This move is not only a change of scenery, but also an opportunity to find a new balance. I hope this place helps you find a little of the peace you are looking for, and allows you to strengthen your bond with Naruto. They both have a lot to learn from each other.
Sasuki had absorbed the Hokage's words, although he had not responded immediately. She wasn't sure how moving in with Naruto would help her, but she decided she would try, at least out of respect for the trust the Hokage had placed in her.
Back in reality, Sasuki was brought to the present by Naruto's enthusiastic voice.
—Look at this, Sasuke! -he shouted from another room-. There is an indoor garden! And even a small pond with fish!
Sasuki slowly walked over to where Naruto was, watching as he leaned over the pond, completely fascinated by the koi fish swimming gracefully in the clear water. Although she still found it difficult to understand how someone as carefree as Naruto could be a part of her life so suddenly, she couldn't help but feel a slight relief that he was so excited about this new beginning.
"I suppose it will at least be interesting to live here," he finally said, his tone softer than usual, but still distant.
Naruto stood up straight and looked at her, a smile that reflected both his excitement and determination.
—It will be! —he stated with conviction—. This place is amazing, and even though we're not... I don't know, what the Hokage expects, we can find a way to make it work!
Sasuke looked at him for a moment, evaluating his words. Although she wasn't sure it was as easy as Naruto made it seem, something about his sincere tone and unwavering optimism made her nod.
—We'll see—Naruto and Sasuki remained silent for a moment in the inner garden, each one lost in their own thoughts as they watched the koi fish swim calmly in the pond. The Senju residence was impressive, both in its size and in the sense of history that permeated every corner. It was hard to imagine that they would be living in such an important place.
"I guess we should explore the rest of the house," Sasuki said, breaking the silence with a calm tone, although there was a slight note of curiosity in his voice.
Naruto nodded enthusiastically, although the gleam in his eyes made it clear that he was already eager to discover more of his new home.
-Yeah! —he responded energetically—. I bet there's a lot of cool stuff here! Come on!
Without waiting for a response, Naruto ran out of the garden, moving down the long hallway that led to the different areas of the house. Sasuke, in contrast, began to walk calmly, following Naruto with measured steps while exploring every detail with an analytical gaze.
The house was a labyrinth of rooms and hallways, each decorated with artifacts that told the history of the Senju Clan. Stone statues, ancient scrolls hanging on the walls, and dark wood furniture carved with intricate designs filled the spaces. Despite its size, the residence had clearly been designed to be a home, albeit one fit for a leader.
—Look at this, Sasuke! —Naruto shouted from one of the side rooms, his voice echoing through the hallway.
Sasuke approached slowly, finding Naruto standing in the middle of a room that must have once been a meeting room. The walls were lined with shelves of books and scrolls, while a large wooden table occupied the center of the room. In the background, a huge window let in sunlight, illuminating the dust floating in the air.
—This place is huge! —Naruto exclaimed, turning around to take up all the space—
Sasuke surveyed the room with calmer interest. Although he did not show it openly, the idea of having access to so many ancient scrolls and books was attractive to him. Maybe he would find something about the Uchiha Clan.
"We should continue exploring," he finally said, in his usual tone. I'm sure there is more to see.
The next hallway took them to a series of smaller rooms, some of which appeared to have been bedrooms, while others were clearly offices or studies. Naruto, continuing to move from side to side, stopped in a room with a wide window that overlooked an outside garden, slightly neglected but full of potential.
—This will be my place! —he exclaimed decisively, looking enthusiastically at the garden—. I'm going to fix it up and make it the best garden in Konoha! Maybe I can even plant some ramen trees or something.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow, watching with some disbelief Naruto's excitement at the idea of transforming the garden.
—Ramen trees, huh? he murmured, a hint of sarcasm in his voice. I'm not sure that's possible.
—Anything is possible if you put your mind to it! —Naruto responded, without losing an ounce of his enthusiasm—. You'll see! This place will be amazing when I'm done with it.
Despite his comment, Sasuke couldn't help but feel slightly relieved to see that Naruto had found something that really excited him. His ability to find joy and purpose in the simplest things was something she didn't share, but at the very least, it meant she wouldn't be hanging around the house with nothing to do.
Sasuke, for her part, continued exploring with a more reserved attitude, evaluating each room in search of something that would make her feel connected to this new place. That's when he came across a heavy wooden door at the end of the hallway, different from the others. When she opened it, what she found left her momentarily speechless.
It was an office, but not just any one. The room was dominated by a large solid wood desk, covered in ancient documents and rolled up scrolls. The walls were lined with shelves that reached to the ceiling, filled with books and artifacts that seemed to tell the story of entire generations. On the wall opposite the desk hung a large portrait of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, with a serious but kind expression on his face.
Sasuke entered the office with cautious steps, feeling the weight of the story surrounding her. This must have been the place from where the Senju Clan leaders had made crucial decisions for Konoha. The presence of Hashirama, the man who had founded the village along with Madara Uchiha, permeated the room, making Sasuki feel an unexpected connection to the past.
"This place..." she murmured to herself, carefully stroking the edge of the desk as her eyes scanned the shelves. This is where important things happened. Where decisions were made that affected the fate of Konoha.
The seriousness of the place resonated with her own desire to be strong and respected. Sasuki had always admired great leaders such as his father, the hokage and... HIM, Sasuki quickly closed his fist while the desire to return honor to his clan and take revenge on HIM, his own Madara and personal hell, came to his head.
Naruto appeared at the door, breathing a little heavily after running down the hallway. When he saw the thoughtful expression on Sasuke's face, he stopped dead in his tracks, realizing that he had found something that really mattered to him.
—What is this place? he asked, his tone lower and more respectful than usual.
"It's the office of the leader of the Senju Clan," Sasuki answered, without taking his eyes off Hashirama's portrait. This is where the important decisions for Konoha were made.
Naruto nodded, although he couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed by the solemnity of the place. Despite everything, he couldn't help but smile when he saw that Sasuki seemed to find something in the room.
"You seem to like this place," he commented, trying to break the tension a little. Are you going to claim it as yours?
Sasuke turned to look at him, his expression softening a little as he considered his answer.
"Yes, I think so," he finally said. This place... is suitable for someone who wants to understand what it means to be strong and respected. Maybe I'll find something here that will help me achieve it.
Naruto nodded. In his own way, Naruto understood the importance of what Sasuki was looking for.
"Then it's yours," he said with a smile. I have the garden and you have this office. It looks like this place is big enough for both of us to find what we need.
Sasuke looked at him for a moment, surprised by the maturity he was showing at that moment. Although she still had her doubts about what the future would hold, there was something about this place and her conversation with Naruto that gave her a small glimmer of hope.
"I suppose so," he finally answered, with a slight tilt of his head. Maybe this is a good start after all.
Naruto smiled widely, feeling that, for the first time, they had taken a small step towards something resembling a truce. The Senju residence, with all its history and majesty, would be their home, and maybe, just maybe, it would also be the place where they could find peace.
The exploration of the Senju residence continued with the same enthusiasm that had characterized Naruto from the beginning. Sasuke, although more reserved, couldn't help but feel a little intrigued by the enormity of the place and the number of secrets it could hold. However, as expected, coexistence between the two soon presented its first challenges.
Having claimed the garden and the office, Naruto and Sasuki found themselves in front of a double door on the second floor of the residence. Unlike the other rooms, this door was adorned with intricate wood carvings.
—This must be the master bedroom! —Naruto exclaimed with shining eyes, as he opened the doors with an enthusiastic push.
What they found was, indeed, an impressive room. The master bedroom was a spacious room with a high ceiling, windows that offered a panoramic view of the garden, and elegant furniture that, although covered by a light layer of dust, preserved its majesty. In the background, a large four-poster bed took center stage, with silk curtains that still maintained their color despite the passage of time.
—It's huge! —Naruto said, running towards the bed and throwing himself on it with a carefree laugh—. This bed is great! I'll take this room!
Sasuke, who had observed everything with apparent calm, frowned when he saw Naruto's attitude.
—Do you really think this room is just for you? he asked coldly. It's the master bedroom, Naruto. It's supposed to be shared.
Naruto, who had started bouncing on the bed like a little child, stopped dead when he heard Sasuki's words. He sat up and looked at her with a mix of confusion and defiance.
-Shared? he repeated, clearly unconvinced. Can't we each have our own room? I mean, there are a lot of rooms in this house. Why do we have to share this one?
Sasuke crossed his arms, his tone becoming sharper.
—Because it's the master bedroom, you can't just monopolize the best of everything.
Naruto blinked, processing what Sasuki had said. Although a part of him understood that he was being a little selfish, the other part, the one who had always had to fight for everything in his life, was reluctant to give in.
—Well, if you want this room, we could solve it with a fight! —he proposed, adopting a defiant posture on the bed—. Whoever wins gets the bedroom.
Sasuke looked at him as if he were looking at a child who didn't understand anything.
—Do you really think this is something worth fighting for? —he said with a voice that dripped with sarcasm—. I don't have time for your games, Naruto.
Naruto shrugged, but couldn't help but crack a mischievous smile.
"You say that because you know you would lose," he responded, knowing that he would hit a sensitive nerve.
Sasuke glared at him, clearly irritated, but maintained his composure.
"I don't care what you think," he said coldly. But you don't have the right to decide everything on your own. This is our home now, Uzumaki, and that means we'll have to make decisions together, whether you like it or not.
Naruto climbed off the bed, still smiling, but with a competitive spark in his eyes.
"Okay, okay," he said, raising his hands in surrender. We can share the room. But I choose the side of the bed that faces the window. I want to be able to see the garden from here!
Sasuke let out an exasperated sigh, but decided not to argue further. It wasn't worth getting into a battle over something so trivial, especially when there were more important things to focus on.
"Do what you want," he said finally, with a tone of voice that indicated that the topic was closed. Just don't bother me when I want to be calm.
Naruto nodded, apparently satisfied with the result. But as they left the room, he couldn't help but make a comment in a low voice, as if speaking to himself.
—I knew you couldn't beat me in a fight...
Sasuke, who had heard perfectly, stopped and looked at him over his shoulder.
—What did you say? —he asked with a soft but dangerous voice.
Naruto raised his hands again, with a nervous laugh.
"Nothing, nothing," he responded quickly, trying to avoid a major conflict. I was just thinking out loud. Don't worry.
Sasuke didn't respond, but gave him one last look before continuing on his way. Although she knew that Naruto was just trying to provoke her, she couldn't help but feel a little annoyed by his constant carefree attitude.
The sun had begun to disappear over the horizon, coloring the sky with shades of orange and pink. The Senju residence, which had witnessed a day full of exploration, disagreements and discoveries, was now bathed in a soft light that softened its imposing contours. Silence settled in the air, broken only by the faint rustle of the wind through the leaves of the trees in the garden.
Naruto and Sasuke, after a long day of adjusting to their new home, met in the kitchen. Although the house had had a service staff assigned until now, they would no longer be present, leaving them alone to tend to their basic needs. Naruto, who had never been the type to mess around with meals, decided to take the initiative.
"I think I'll make ramen for dinner," he announced, more to himself than to Sasuki, as he headed to the pantry to gather the ingredients they had brought for a Naruto-style instant ramen.
Sasuke, who was sitting near the kitchen entrance, watched him silently, her eyes following his every movement. He had no intention of participating in the preparation of the meal, but he didn't seem to want to stop it either. Naruto, for his part, moved with surprising efficiency, accustomed to making his own food since he lived alone.
"This shouldn't take long," Naruto continued, as he placed a pot of water on the stove and began preparing the noodles. It's not a complicated meal, but it's sure to be good.
Sasuke didn't respond, keeping her gaze fixed on the table in front of her. Despite his silence, he couldn't help but feel slightly curious about the process. Naruto always talked about ramen, but this was the first time I had seen him make it. Not that he minded much, but after such a tiring day, anything that offered a moment of distraction was welcome.
As Naruto cooked, the kitchen was filled with the familiar, comforting aroma of ramen in preparation. Naruto, with the concentration of someone doing something he loved, busied himself with seasoning the broth and preparing the additional ingredients. It was evident that, to him, ramen was not just a meal, but a small pleasure that he could share, even if the person he shared it with was as cold and distant as Sasuki.
Finally, after a few minutes, Naruto served two bowls of steaming ramen, placing them on the table with a gesture that was intended to be casual but showed his pride in what he had prepared.
"Here you go," he said, sitting down across from Sasuke. It's nothing special, but I hope you like it.
Sasuke looked at the bowl in front of her with a neutral expression before picking up the chopsticks and beginning to eat silently. Naruto watched her for a moment, trying to read her reaction, but as expected, Sasuki gave no sign of whether he enjoyed it or not.
The atmosphere at the table was tense. Despite the warmth of the ramen, the silence between them was almost suffocating. Naruto, who was usually the first to fill any awkward silence with his endless chatter, found it difficult to say anything at that moment. There was something about the solemnity of the situation, about the immensity of the house around them, that made him feel smaller than usual.
After a few minutes of silence, Naruto decided he had to say something, anything, to break the tension.
"So…" he began, his mouth full of noodles, before realizing he was talking with his mouth full and quickly swallowing them. What do you think of the house so far?
Sasuke looked up briefly, evaluating his response.
"It's... big," he finally answered, looking back at his bowl. And it has history.
Naruto nodded, expecting something else, but when it became clear that Sasuki wouldn't say anything else, he struggled to keep the conversation going.
"Yes, it has a lot of history," he continued, in a lighter tone. It's almost like living in a museum, but without the strings that tell you you can't touch anything.
Sasuke looked at Naruto, clearly unimpressed by his attempt at humor. However, something in his expression softened slightly.
"It's not a museum," he answered seriously. It is a place that belongs to Konoha, a place that keeps the history of people who were important to the village. You shouldn't take it lightly.
Naruto shrugged, not entirely surprised by Sasuke's response.
"I don't take it lightly," he said, more seriously this time. I'm just trying to... I don't know, make it more bearable. This place is amazing, but it can also be a little… intimidating, don't you think?
Sasuke didn't respond immediately. In her mind, Naruto's words rang with more truth than she was willing to admit. The house, for all its grandeur, also made him feel small, a constant reminder of what he had lost and what he had to live with now.
"Maybe a little," he finally admitted, quietly.
Silence settled between them again, but this time it was slightly different. There was an unspoken understanding that they were both dealing with something bigger than they had anticipated. The ramen was finished in silence, each one deep in thought.
When they finished eating, Naruto picked up the bowls and carried them to the sink, washing them with methodical movements. Sasuke watched from the table, grateful that she didn't have to do anything, but also surprised by the normality of everything. It was as if, for a brief moment, they were living an ordinary life, far from the complication that their existences used to be.
Once everything was clean, Naruto turned to Sasuki, scratching the back of his neck with a slightly embarrassed smile.
"Well, I think that's all for today," he said. It's been a long day, and we should probably rest.
Sasuke nodded, feeling the accumulated fatigue of the day in his muscles.
"Yes, I suppose you're right," he replied, rising from the table with silent grace.
They both headed towards the master bedroom, walking side by side in silence. When they arrived, Naruto took off his sandals and climbed onto the bed, rolling over to the side he had chosen earlier, the one facing the window.
"Good night, Sasuke," he said with a softer voice than usual, as he settled into bed.
"Good night," Sasuke replied, without adding anything else.
Naruto lay on his back, looking out the window as the shadows of the trees fell on the ceiling. The day had been long and strange, and despite all the challenges and discomfort, there was a strange sense of satisfaction about it. They had done something together, even if it was just exploring the house and fighting over stupid things. It was a start, and Naruto, ever the optimist, was willing to believe that things would get better with time.
As his thoughts faded, Naruto felt sleep slowly engulf him. He closed his eyes, letting himself be carried away by the tranquility that the moment offered.
On the other side of the room, Sasuki sat on the bed for a while, watching Naruto as he fell into sleep. There was something about his company that, although he didn't want to admit it, he found comforting. The house had the potential to be a place of rest, a place where he could find some of the peace he longed for.
With a soft sigh, Sasuke laid down, staring at the ceiling for a few more minutes. I knew this new arrangement would be a challenge, but maybe, just maybe, I could find some value in it. As he closed his eyes, he allowed himself a moment of vulnerability, a small crack in the mask of coldness he always wore.
Maybe this change wouldn't be so bad after all.
And with that thought, Sasuki drifted off to sleep, as the Senju residence fell silent, promising a new day full of possibilities and challenges ahead.
This chapter was one of the ones I rewrote more times, having cut out a lot of content because I still didn't have much idea what Sasuke's definitive personality would be like.
The bedroom scene was one of the ones I tried to rewrite the most, partly because I wanted to show that Sasuki, as another clan leader, was not going to let herself be bowed to Naruto's wishes.
