Chapter 37
"Mitchum died?" Luke clarified
"After Mitchum died, Odette and I talked about ending the marriage, but she needed some more time to let her money grow. I started spending more and more time in the States. When the four year mark hit. Odette and I decided that I would file. This way the board would not think I got caught having an affair." Logan said.
"With Mitchum dead, you didn't have the threats anymore." Rory said.
"Threats?" Luke asked.
"Yes, Well Mitchum was an ass. He received death threats for the last 25 years or so, but about 10 years ago, well about the time I returned to HPG, I started getting threats," Logan said.
"You didn't tell me you personally were getting death threats," Rory said. This worried her.
"I wouldn't call them death threats, but it was enough to hire security." He said, looking at Rory, "You remember my driver, Thomas?" She nodded. "Yeah, he was not just a driver, he was a bodyguard." He shook his head in disgust. "I hate that word. It makes me feel like I can't take care of myself. But, Mitchum and the Board insisted."
"You see Mom." Rory began. "I didn't want Tori to be caught up in that. At the time I didn't know if she was a boy or a girl. If she had been a boy, she would have been targeted as the Huntzburger Heir."
Logan chucked. "What they don't know is that the Huntzburger Heir does not have to be the first born son to the first born son. Not any more. With Honors help, I had the bylaws changed. Her children are the Huntzburger Heir, or they can be if they so choose."
About the time Mitchell was born. Honor started distancing herself and her family from HPG. Up until that time Josh was one of our corporate lawyers. I'm sure his reasoning to join his family firm was not entirely based on the threats, but it was definitely on the list.
"Well what is the board going to think now that you and Odette are divorced and Tori is now in the picture?" Lorelai asked.
Rory and Logan exchanged looks. Rory nodded. "I gave up my parental rights. I don't want the HPG Board, The press or anyone finding out I am her biological dad. I don't want Tori to deal with thinking I didn't want to be a part of her life or that I didn't love her. When she is old enough to understand, we will sit down with her and explain."
"But to answer your question Lorelai, if this gets out, I will look bad to the Board. I don't like to use it, mainly because the board is made of intelligent men with a good business background and I respect and rely on their opinions, but with Mitchum's shares, Honor's proxy, I have enough voting power to overturn anything the Board decides." Logan said.
"So," Luke said. "You are just going to be her step-dad? Not that being a step-dad isn't great, but I didn't know about April until she was 12. I was mad at Anna, but April wasn't."
"No offense Luke, but you nor April are heir to a billion dollar media empire." Logan said. "You finding out you are a dad to a 12 year old did not make front page news internationally."
Logan watched Luke. He hoped he didn't offend him. That was not his intention. Luke was slowly nodding his head. He was processing.
"To answer your question Luke." Rory began, "Logan and I are going to get married. When we do, He is going to adopt Tori."
"Wait a minute." Lorelai said. "You are getting married so Logan can save face to the board?"
Logan shook his head. "Is that all you got out of what was said?" Rory asked. "Your grandchild feeling abandoned by her dad didn't register with you. No, it wouldn't. Dad and I have a great relationship now, but we both know that the only reason he came around when I was a child was to try to get back with you. Dad didn't mature as a dad until he was left with Gigi and didn't have a choice."
"Rory," Lorelai said, but Rory had already left the table.
"Lorelai, do you hate me so much that you would rather see your daughter and granddaughter unhappy?" Logan asked.
"They were both happy before you came along." Lorelai shouted.
"Bullshit." Logan said as he stood up facing Lorelai.
"Logan," Luke warned. Logan pulled his eyes from Lorelai to Luke.
"Logan let's go." Rory said. She grabbed his hand and led him off the porch.
They were in the kitchen eating a sandwich when Emily and Tori returned.
Emily watched as Tori recalled the events of the evening. The bird on the deck of the restaurant they ate at, the dogs, cats and birds in the movie she watched. Emily was smiling. The three of them make a nice family, she thought, then she remembered. They were supposed to eat at Luke and Lorelia's. Why were they eating a sandwich? Emily just shook her head.
"Victoria, I enjoyed my evening with you, but I think I will head to bed. There is a book calling my name." Emily told her. Emily turned to go to her bedroom when she stopped. "Rory dear. Will you walk me to my room?" Rory nodded.
While Emily and Rory were talking, Logan put Tori to bed, reading her a story and promises of flying to the Vineyard in the morning.
Rory and Logan met back up on the sofa. They curled up together to watch a movie. Neither one has much to say. Processing became the new norm to them.
They were both up early Saturday morning. Logan had the luggage by the door, ready to load while Rory was helping Tori get ready. She was so excited.
Emily and Logan were in the kitchen, Logan was fixing Rory and himself a travel mug of coffee while Emily fixed Tori a travel mug of juice. They both turned when they heard the back door open. Lorelia was standing in the door.
"Luke is bringing the car around front to load the luggage." She said not to anyone in particular. Logan assumed she was talking to him.
He nodded. "I'll help him load it." Logan said.
When he was out the door Emily turned to Lorelai. "Well?" Emily asked.
"Well, what?" Lorelai asked.
"Are you satisfied?" She asked.
"Satisfied with what?" Lorelai asked. "Satisfied that my daughter lied to me for 4 almost 5 years? Satisfied that my granddaughter is going to be raised by the one person that causes my daughter to act like an idiot? No, mother, I am not satisfied."
Lorelai turned to leave only to run into Rory standing in the doorway. "You want to know why I lied to you. I lied because you can't be trusted to keep your snide remarks to yourself. What if I had been Tori? What would you say to her? I may second guess my decision about a lot of things concerning Logan and Tori, but I do not second guess my decision to keep it from you." She turned to go to the car where Logan was settling Tori in the car.
Emily shook her head and walked past Lorelai. She took Tori's juice cup along with the apple Logan cut up for her to the car. She hugged Rory and reached in and kissed Tori on the cheek. "You have fun at yard. Be a good girl and I will see you when you get back." Emily said, handing Rory Tori's cup and container of sliced apples.
Rory looked at her mom, then to Tori. "Tell Lele bye. Her and Papa Luke will be gone when we get back." Rory said, then turned to her mom, lowering her voice. "I am sorry I am a disappointment to you, but I love you." She got in the back seat with Tori while Logan waited for Lorelai to move, so he could get in the front seat. Luke was dropping them off at the airport.
