Chapter 12: Demons Even I Can't See

/

Been too long! Let's continue, shall we? So, the ones who survived were Lex, Slade, Batman, Clark, Raven, and Vixen. Anyone else…. I'll paint that pretty picture later.

Your next interesting demon of the month? Soul diggers….

/

John didn't much like facing foes and one witch, who had all of their lives in her sixteen-year-old hands. In his universe, thus crisis was averted. Yet however much he wished to escape into another reality by himself, he stuck around for the rest of their adventure. Who knew? Maybe this Raven had it in her to rise above the rest set and even prove the magi that it was pointless to be so Goddamned worried. She was a kid, and he couldn't wait to tell Zee if she…

Looking down at his hands, he was astounded to know himself in one piece; no bits drifting off into the universe to reconnect and form himself in his own time. "Raven has to do this, but what if it's all too much to ask of, anyone?"

He looked up and saw the sweet and hearted Vixen, still young and fearful for her life and everyone else's…

His eyes narrowed at the shadows lurking in the background. No, no eyes apparent. He turned to see Raven with Slade and tending to his wounds from earlier. Batman had not held back either, even when his demon shifter had gone away. Hopefully. He was a strong JLA strategist. Slade could learn a thing or two.

Yet, it was the other way around.

"How is the big bat, Superman." Slade had to ask…

"He's calm, and he's concerned as I am about how close you two are becoming. I admit, it worries me."

"It had I, from the start." John snorted and stood. Talking this pompous a walk would do them no good. "Separate them and watch the world burn. Go ahead." He waved off the heroes and Raven stood her slippers snatching the gavel at her feet. "Constantine." Her voice was laced in fear, but that drove anyone to her siren's call to battle. He dragged out a cigarette from his pocket, thinking it best to get some distance. "I'm going to have a drag. Don't slate up too late, lov."

She frowned and Superman only meditated on another answer. "Raven, Slade is not being corrupted I noticed." The others pursed their lips as Slade put his head lower, as if being wrong about something already. "And…we all believe he's protected from the demons –

"He's not. He was affected a dozen times so far. So far, x – ray doesn't hold up, Supes."

"John, stay out of this."

Constantine stomped back through the leaning, broken passage in the stony rock dwelling and crunched a loafer onto his cig. It had to be Raven. She was bringing them all together, the precious gem that she still was, deep down inside her core. And Slade was as greedy as even him for trying to find it. "He was poisoned, bitten, so he CAN die. If you want, I'll be the one to axe 'im if he gets out of line. If."

Slade looked up, Raven's eyes masked uneasiness beside his own. "If, as if he'll…He's no going to –

"Trigon spared him."

"He spared you too."

"We escaped because of our own safeguard against his magic. Raven, this isn't our first showdown." Superman watched her rise, her hands out as if to break her own promises. "When I was the one who set him free…." She put her hands round herself, pushing past John as he said nothing. Vixen moved quicker, knowing Raven was going to be forced to question if her demon held any worth in gaining her true magic. Her true light in the end, just as the Prophecy had then again explained.

"Rae!"

Vixen moved on legs with her Ostrich as the next to summon by its speed. Raven floated, holding back as Vixen put out her arms. "You can't go out there! It's too dangerous. We all need ta' stick together-

"Superman was right, their last battle with my father Trigon was years ago, I opened the door to Azarath…" Raven's eyes watered as she felt so grounded. "I need to end this; it's not going to fix earth if we hide any longer. I need to find a way –

"If you do, what good comes from a soulless sacrifice." John's shoes tapped the dirt. "I stayed because I want to believe you'd never give in to that demon's faults. Cowardice and acting ballsy isn't one of them."

"Hey, watch, Wizard-

"He still can't tell me enough of what I already know." Raven's arms slumped to her sides pitifully. "I nearly found my power, and my confidence was at its zenith. I had so much –

"And without that same discipline, the timing was all off. Admit it, you need a mentor." John put out his hand. "Slade is making you stay this way because you almost did die. In a way, he thinks coddling you and feeling sorry isn't a great enough mask."

"Mask?"

Raven blinked at John. "What mask are you talking about, Trigon –

"Kept his brand."

Raven thought back. His whole idea was to save the world, gain back his body. So…

They heard a scream and it had to be reason to turn around. "It already happened…shit!"

/

A creeping dark red slice of tendrils had gone after a sleeping Luthor and Superman was fighting them off. Batman was in binds down in another cellar apart from the building. Vixen ran to get him while Raven saw the body attached to the tendrils.

"Slade…why??"

"Smoke a bone, that demon had a promise. Bring you back to his alter to become the last sacrifice of this planet, and the rest would live. He doesn't want you, Raven. I liver because we knew I might never expire. This curse is not forever if you get your wish…you can't fight him. There is no confidence left, because it was taken upon your transformation."

"THE SELVES." Her heart pounded. "You let Trigon do this?? What about your home?? He won't give you what you're asking for!"

"Probably not." Slade's red fire moved to choke a blue faced Lex. His armor getting crushed as the constrictor squeezed. "However, I get to hop time lines if that happens. This earth was doomed from the start. Even you knew the outcome and yet kept it to yourself…"

John, everything turned to him.

"You saw…you knew this would …." Raven's anger increased with her fists full of magic. "Both of you were using my extension of this world, why?? That doesn't answer enough!" A dark projectile vein of wrappings collected around Slade as he did not struggle. "He's lying, you're a rejected copy. Half of Slade. The rest of him like me, is gone."

/

"W…what…..?"

The space between the wall was knocked on as a hand pulled itself up on legs of iron with a grunt. "He's…not …"

"Bruce! Don't go in there!" Vixen dragged at his arm as Barman pointed, nearly beaten as his pupils blew wide at the mercenary's own single eye. "He's just trying to die. Trigon rejected him, so this version is not the human part of you….is it…Ira the immortal part taken limb from limb by Trigon." Bruce rasped loudly. "Let me through to them. I can stop this –

"You got possessed earlier –

"He's clear, Vixie." John rolled his eyes back to Slade as the tendrils started to waiver. "You're no messenger, but you wanted this world gone. Why is that then, mate?"

Slade cracked his neck, his powers dispersing as Lex fell to the ground with Superman. Both on their backs, Bruce walked up to Slade. He knew not enough to pin the man as suicidal. "You were the one who told Raven that her demon side could be the key to something. You were the one who said she can't use her powers or else she would attract the demons meant to come searching for her. Why, then."

"Death, is the only way to start over. Maybe to escape what I was never." Slade stood back and his body began to cake off, flecks of earth. His fire magic from Trigon holding it all together. "He cursed me, to suffer. To never die but to always feel that I was on the brink of death. When he nearly lost, the bond was cut yet the curse, as you see it." The male hissed and pointed to his face. Mostly dust and bone as Vixen gasped, covering her mouth. "You're…. a mummy??"

"He's not."

"Not totally actually, but an active one that is unending, child "Slade explained coolly, despite his grotesque appearance.

"I knew you were cursed like before, but…the human in you. Is…gone? Until we stop my father, right."

"I don't know if you'll have enough time –

"Sure, she will." John's smirk had Bruce bring himself to speak. "Constantine, Raven was warned against using her powers."

"We have no time to dally, Bats. And her powers aren't the problem. You got it all wrong. Her dark side is. That can't come out –

"It has to." Serious in his tone, Slade cut the magi down, "If she can't gain determination in her dark side and all of the selves combined like before, she won't receive the powers Azar has handed to Raven by her birthrate. She's related to the leader and founder of the world of Azarath. Azar is also related to Trigon, which means your darkness and beyond taming it can even become a sturdy weapon in the right hands. But…. while I rot on and on. I have had little time to help at all. It's bound to fall through "

"With combat training, that's fine." Bruce strapped his gauntlets on tighter. In metaphor. "Raven, your…fighting stance is a defensive position like my sin, Tim's. I can help you hone offense so as to keep you standing when the time comes to face your father."

John smiled back. "Magic. That is easy," He boasted. "But the dark arts is my gain. Slade? Are you sure she can't be a little ready in this fight? Maybe you are afraid of HER dying. You did say she was like one of your kids, didn't you, mate?"

Slade jutted back a bit. Oh, oh.

Raven looked at Slade and realized that his human body may have been lost, yet his memories and emotions were all carved along the same wall. Same shell and all. He was…. afraid FOR her.

"You. Are still human, I know that it's a lot you would do to change things. I can't blame any of this on one person. We all played a part." Raven smiled a little, Slade and John with Bruce, Vix and Superman all nodded. Lex just shook his head and tried to find a corner to sleep again in. "Wake me when you need my mind for once, Ingrates…" He muttered and tried to stay out of their business until it did any good at all.

"So, what is the next step, Batman." Clark didn't think Raven or the others by their hearts beating were lying or being insincere. He knew it, as did Slade while he could still tell if Bruce had any intent to kill him.

To everyone else, there was a positive chance there would be a fight between the teams. Antihero. And hero.

Raven just hoped Trigon was stopped before someone else had to perish to anger like Bruce almost had.

/

In the night at its length, Clark was on the watch until John swapped with him. Them, came Lex. He was rested, feeling like this nightmare was one if many. From war world to the country if the Amazon's. To Ra's Island in Asia someplace, he was not opposed to becoming a bit stoic to observe and gain the upper hand. His only weakness was that he now had to work with the good boy Kryptonian. Bruce was one thing, Slade even as a zombie, yet the alien?

He shuddered and felt a chill in the air.

~ We can help you. ~

The man turned, hearing on the wind as he walked a few paces off. "Just an illusion from a lack of shut eye. When can I even think to move my –

~ We can help you. Let us. You tire of helping these…. ~

"Who's there? Stop saying things that don't …make…. ~ He held his neck, the fave again going blue and purple. ~ Let us in. Let our master guide you to a paradise worthy, mortal. You may aide us. Draw the princess nearer. Near the throne…. ~

"w…. a…." He went down, his knees hit the gravel as the air got thinner. There was a giant snake with the teeth of a worm slinking round it. Transparent as if found his ear and pushed inside. Lex held his mouth shut and was dying. He thought, yet the possession was clear. The work like parasite then made sure that it would be heard. ~ Lord Trigon wants the light of this world to perish. You must see to it, that she never awakens. Do so, and you shall be set free ….! ~

"GAH!"

Lex looked at the ground, John rushing over as he coughed. "S…sorry…stupid dust in my lungs." The millionaire lied, trying to stand and get himself out of his episode quickly. "Who's turn is it for a swap? Hum?"

Lex got possessed by a dirty worm, but….it suits him. This is horror and thriller themed from here on in so, read on!
