Olivia felt something hard against her as she slept and after a few moments, she woke to see Fitz awake and staring at her.
"Hey baby," she whispered.
"Hey Livie," he said softly as he pulled her closer.
She raised her legs over him and ran her hand up his hard, muscular chest. "Did your erection wake you?"
He nodded.
Olivia leaned in and kissed him. She felt him part her lips with his tongue and deepen the kiss. She reached into his boxers and pulled out his hard penis and began to stroke him.
"I want it inside me," she entreated.
Fitz turned her body so her back was to him and he pushed down her shorts and panties without hesitation. He moved his hands between her legs and began massaging her clit. "I want you nice and fucking wet," he groaned, "when I slide into you."
Olivia turned her head to him and licked his lips. "I need to feel you now," she moaned.
Her 10-day period of abstinence finished and even then they waited a few more days before they started having sex out of caution. By her estimation, they only had another week or two before they had to stop because it would be too risky to continue so she planned to get as much of him as she could, especially since her sex drive was still as high as it was.
Fitz pulled her ass against his groin and slowly slipped just a few inches of himself inside her and immediately groaned in pleasure when he felt her warm, wet muscles around him.
"What am I gonna do when I can't fuck you every day," he whispered as he began thrusting slowly and gently.
"Suffer," she moaned and they both immediately broke into laughs.
"You've got jokes huh?" He said as groped her tender breast and heard an audible sigh from her. He began thrusting again.
"Mmm- just like that baby-"
"That's how you like it? You like when I fuck you nice and slow-"
"Oh yes-" she cried, "I love it."
He sucked against the crook of her neck, "fuck," Olivia cried, "more."
He held her tighter and sucked harder against her neck as he continued thrusting while his other hand slowly rubbed her clit.
He fucked with her a little more than his tip. The curve of it sliding in and out of the opening of her hole was maddening.
"Fuck- I feel it, baby," he moaned as he squeezed her nipple.
She was close and beginning to clamp down on him.
"-mhmm-I'm cuming," she choked out as she grabbed his hand that was between her legs.
A few more slow, wet strokes brought her to a squirting orgasm. Fitz came as well though he tried to hold back until she finished then he pulled out quickly and cum immediately shot up her back and ass.
Olivia tried to catch her breath and so did Fitz as he cradled her belly.
"Fuck- it's getting better and better," Fitz groaned.
Olivia laughed and shook her head, "God, I need more. I need more and more and more of your sweet cock."
"How are you gonna go that long without a good dicking?" Fitz asked.
"I don't know- it'll be hard but I'm sure that once I give birth I'll feel too shitty - at least physically- to want sex for at least a couple months but you on the other hand- you're gonna suffer."
Fitz grabbed her and hugged her, "you little asshole-"
Olivia laughed and kissed him, "mmmm-" she moaned then broke the kiss and sat up slowly. "I'm gonna get ready for work."
"Nope," he said as he pulled her back down and took her nipple in his mouth, and sucked hard.
"Fuck-" she groaned as she curled her toes. "This isn't fair-"
Fitz leaned up, "turn around let me lick your ass."
Olivia turned around so quickly that he couldn't help but laugh.
"You've gotten me addicted," she said with a smile.
He widened her legs and opened her ass and licked her. She grabbed a handful of the sheets and pressed her face into the pillow.
"Shit," she cried out in ecstasy.
Fitz laughed and leaned up. "I know what you want," he said as he reached into the nightstand drawer.
"Why did you stop," she complained.
Fitz pulled a bottle of warming lube and when Olivia saw it she grinned from ear to ear. He pulled it open and slathered it over his shaft before he tossed the bottle on the bed and positioned himself behind her. Olivia took a deep breath and relaxed her muscles so she could enjoy him.
He ran his hand down her back, "are you ready?"
"I've been ready for weeks," she said as she hugged the pillow underneath her.
He was erect and the lube was beginning to warm on him. He slowly pushed his tip against her asshole and then buried it inside her.
"Oh my god," she sighed as he bit her lip.
He pulled out, fully removing himself before he slipped himself inside her again.
"Fitz-" she cried, knowing he was doing it to drive her mad.
He pulled out again and watched her asshole close before he entered her again. Her muscles were already beginning to tickle. He pumped into her slowly, using just his tip to fuck her.
Olivia closed her eyes and focused on the feeling, the indescribable feeling of him stretching her hole so sweetly. It never took much for them to orgasm and this time was no different.
Fitz closed her eyes and threw his head back and spanked her ass. "fuck Livie," he moaned as he drew in a breath.
"God- you feel so good-" she moaned.
"Yeah?" he entreated, "rub your clit for me."
Olivia reached between her legs and traced her fingers lightly against her clit. She shuddered at the contact and stopped immediately because teasing her clit while Fitz was inside her the way he was would only lead to an instantaneous orgasm. She didn't want it to end quickly but to her chagrin, he was watching her and noticed she hadn't done as he instructed so he reached under her and did it himself. He pressed his middle finger lightly against the most sensitive part of her clit and began teasing her.
"Baby- no," she protested, "I'm gonna come too quick-"
"That's the point-" he groaned, breathless.
"No-" Olivia cried out as she squeezed her legs together feeling her orgasm just seconds away.
"Cum for me Livie- that's what I want. I want to feel you cum now," he said, never faltering in his rhythm until her muscle began to wring his orgasm from his cock.
Olivia grabbed the pillow and screamed out as she came with his penis still inside her.
The moment it was over she plopped down on the bed, "shit," she said breathlessly.
All she wanted to do now was pull the blankets over her body and sleep. Fitz fell back on the bed beside her. Her ass was wet and full of warm cum dripping between her cheeks. It was a feeling she loved because it was usually accompanied by tingling around her rim after her orgasm.
Her eyes were suddenly heavy and she could barely enjoy her post-orgasm bliss because she needed sleep more than anything.
"Fitz- you have to wake me in 10 minutes-"
"No- don't put that on me."
"Please-" she said as she pulled the blanket up to her shoulders and closed her eyes.
"Set an alarm-" he said as he closed his eyes as well.
Olivia groaned and moments later they were both asleep.
Hours later she jumped out of her sleep to find the morning bright around her. She grabbed her phone quickly and checked the time. It was almost 8:30. "Fuck" she screamed.
Fitz jumped up, "baby- what it is what- what?" he said, startled.
"I overslept-"
He groaned and rolled over to go back to sleep. Olivia slapped his arm, "wake up it's not funny. I told you to wake me up."
"It's fine, you've never been late-"
She sat up quickly and headed to the bathroom as fast as she could without running. She showered as quickly as she could and then headed out. Fitz was sitting up on the bed.
"Just tell them you don't feel well-"
"I can't lie-"
"You can and then you can throw up, wash out your fucking mouth and come back in bed with me."
Olivia smiled as she mulled over the idea- "fine," she said then grabbed her phone to call her chief resident. The call was easier than she expected and she's managed to talk her way around telling a direct lie. When she hung up she turned around and Fitz was smiling.
"Get in loser," he said.
"The bed is gross. I was lying on sheets soaked in squirt and cum."
"So am I and you don't hear me complaining," Fitz quipped.
Olivia walked over to him and sat on his legs. "I feel bad, I had a couple surgeries scheduled today."
"Olivia, you always show up, taking a day isn't the end of the world baby."
"I know and I think the only reason they're being so understanding is because of my pregnancy."
"That's good, milk it."
Olivia nodded and leaned over and kissed him, "do you want to go back to bed or are you ready to get up?"
"I'm up," he said. "I'm gonna shower in a second."
Olivia stood, "okay do that and I'll go check on breakfast."
She headed downstairs to see what Simone made for breakfast. She had just finished cooking and had plated food but only for Fitz since she expected Olivia to be at work. She made french toast topped with whipped mascarpone and berries. On the side, she made sausages and fresh orange juice.
"Liv, I didn't know you were here?" she said. "I can make something separate for you if you'd like."
"Oh no, I overslept so I'm not going in today. This looks good. Fitz will be down any second."
"Okay, let me get a plate ready for you," Simone said.
"Thanks," Olivia said as she sat at the counter and grabbed the pitcher of still water and a glass. She poured herself water then took her pills from the counter and swallowed them with the water. At the end of the week, she was set to begin taking steroids to help her daughter's lungs develop quicker for an early delivery.
She sat and waited as Simone served her and Fitz's food and just moments after she was finished he walked into the kitchen.
"This looks good," he said as he immediately grabbed a piece of the french toast from his plate and stuffed it in his mouth.
Olivia took one as well and bit into it. "Mmm..it is." She grabbed a strawberry and fed it to him.
He ate it and sat down then gulped down some orange juice. "So what are we doing today since you're home?"
"Well, I wanted to call my therapist and see if she's available for an appointment."
"Any specific reason?"
"No, it's been going well so I don't want to stop as soon as I feel good and I wanted us to talk to the contractors and check the progress of the renovation. I really want us to move there as soon as possible because if it doesn't happen in the next few weeks it might be better to wait until after I give birth just so we don't end up having everything happen at once."
"I think we can make it. They've been working on it for almost two months now. You were the one who wanted an indoor pool or we'd be done."
Olivia laughed and fed him another berry, "well you told me I can have anything I wanted and you wanted an indoor basketball court."
"My basketball court is done. The pool can use some work but the customizations are mostly done and besides it was ready to move in when we bought it with the renovations the owners added before they put it on the market."
Olivia nodded, "They've been working a lot faster than I thought."
"You mean working 24/7," he quipped.
She smiled again, "yeah. It looks so good, I can't wait till it's done and I can't wait until we bring our daughter home."
He reached for her and lifted her onto his lap and caressed her belly."She'll be here soon- not too soon hopefully."
"Yeah," she rested her hand over his, "I need you to cook as long as possible and I need you to gain some weight."
Fitz smiled, "so then eat!"
She rolled her eyes playfully and stuffed a piece of french toast in her mouth.
"Simone, can you make me an Irish coffee with Baileys," Fitz requested.
"Absolutely and what should I make for lunch?" Simone asked.
Olivia thought for a moment, "something really high fat and protein, maybe an avocado and salmon salad or something? Would you like that Fitz?"
"I'll eat anything," he said as he stuffed more food in his mouth.
"And dinner?" Simone asked.
"Something really fattening, truffle mac and cheese maybe- with lamb chops and sauteed spinach with butter and for dessert cheesecake," Olivia said, "Whatever you can cook to make me and her gain some weight."
"You want mac and cheese and cheesecake in the same meal?" Fitz asked, laughing.
"Creme brulee then," Olivia said.
"I could eat some brownies?"
"Ouu brownies yes- why didn't I think of that," Olivia said.
"Okay," Simone said with a smile, "cakey brownies, fudgy brownies?"
"Fudgy," Olivia and Fitz answered at the same time.
Simone laughed, "okay usual time for lunch and dinner?"
They both nodded.
Once they finished breakfast they both headed back to the bedroom and spent time on the phone with their contractor and interior decorator to finish discussing some of the furnishings that were to be made including what furniture from the apartment would be moved to the new house. The conversation took hours as it usually did and ended around noon. Olivia wasn't able to get an appointment with her therapist.
"Okay so no therapist," Fitz said as Olivia hung up the phone
Olivia nodded, "so I actually wanted to talk to you?"
Fitz leaned back and fluffed a pillow behind him. "What's up?"
"We've never talked about parenting," she said.
"Parenting?"
"Yeah, you know, we mentioned it here and there but never really talked about it. What kind of parent do you want to be?"
He smiled as he thought about it for a moment, "a present parent."
"What do you mean?"
"My parents were there for every graduation, every fucking PTA meeting, every basketball game, every birthday party, and when I was younger it mean so much to me they were always there so that's the kind of parent I want to be. Making sure everything is perfect every single day isn't possible but being there is. I know that I'll love her- that's the easy part but I want to know her and know how to take care of her- I don't even know how to change a fucking diaper so the learning curve needs to be very steep-."
Olivia smiled and climbed on his lab and wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his lips softly. "I really love you and I'll teach you everything you need to know."
He nodded and smiled."Tell me about your parenting intentions."
She smiled, "I just want to spend every day giving her so much love and care- but not selfish love, you know and like you said I want to be there for her and I'm a little afraid because I don't want to be stuck in surgeries when it's time to show up for her."
"To be fair, you don't need to worry about that stuff for a few years," he said.
She nodded in agreement and sighed, "right now, I just want her to be healthy."
"She's gonna be spoiled," Fitz said. "I'm gonna make sure she's spoiled."
"So spoiled," Olivia agreed before she kissed him again and stood, "I'm gonna go get my hair and nails done."
He groaned, "what am I supposed to do here by myself? Fuck, you're making me sound clingy."
"Come with me then," she offered.
"I'd rather you kick me in the balls."
She laughed and shrugged playfully, "suit yourself," she said and headed to the closet to change. As she changed she texted Maya to see if she wanted to meet her at the salon. It was a Saturday and she didn't have work. After she dressed she headed back to Fitz, "I'll see you in a couple of hours baby." He nodded and pulled her to him and kissed her. "Be careful."
"I will baby."
By the time she headed downstairs, Maya texted her that she would love to go to the salon with her so Olivia had Alex drive her over to Maya's apartment to pick her up.
She waited for just a few minutes at the entrance before Maya came down and climbed into the car with her. Alex pulled off immediately.
"Hi Livie," Maya greeted with a hug and kiss.
"Hi mom," she said.
"Why aren't you at work?"
"I overslept," she answered.
"That's unusual for you."
Olivia nodded, "yeah it is but they've been really understanding with the pregnancy."
"How's Fitz?" Maya asked.
"We were working on the house this morning but now he's watching soccer and he's bored out of his mind," she said with a chuckle. "He hates when I'm gone."
Maya laughed, "how's my granddaughter?"
"She has the hiccups."
"Really," Maya said with a grin as she reached over and caressed her stomach. "How's it going with names?"
"Fitz loves Sienna from the Seine River in Paris. I like Freya, Violet, Rosie, Isabella, Penelope, and Alia as well but I'm leaning towards those as middle names- oh mom, by the way, Fitz's mom and sister are planning a baby shower for me, do you want me to give you his mom's number so you could be in the loop. They aren't telling me anything because it's supposed to be a surprise but I don't want you to be left out of the whole thing."
"I'd love that," Maya said.
"Okay," Olivia said as she went into her phone and texted Catherine's number before she forgot.
They arrived at the salon a little while later and both headed in. Two hours later they were finished and headed back to the car.
"Do you need anything? Groceries or anything before I drop you back home?"
"I just went shopping the other day," Maya said.
Olivia nodded and they headed back and dropped Maya off then headed back to her apartment. She enjoyed the rest of her quiet day with Fitz curled up on the couch, cuddling, discussing baby names, and watching tv. Her next shift didn't start until 6pm the following day.
It was a cool and rainy evening as Fitz pulled up to the curb to drop her as close to the main entrance as possible without blocking it.
"Do you want me to walk you to the door?" Fitz asked.
She smiled, "baby, it's like 50 feet away."
"It's slippery outside."
"I'm okay," she said as she leaned in and kissed him, "I love you, I'll see you later."
"Love you too. Walk slowly."
She laughed and nodded as she pulled her hood over her head and slowly opened the door and stepped out of the car. She walked around the car and stepped on the curb. Just a few steps towards the door and she heard someone behind her and looked around.
"Dr. Pope," Dr. Roberts said. He was dripping with water and seemed a bit off.
"Dr. Roberts," she said as she turned around when she recognized his voice.
He stumbled to her and grabbed her shoulder, "Dr. Roberts, are you okay?"
"I'm okay- I-I'm I've never been better actually," he managed to say.
He was drunk.
"I have to heads inside, I'll see you later I don't want to be late," she said quickly then stepped off but he grabbed her shoulder, "No- I was looking for you actually-"
"Why?"
"To do this," he said as he grabbed her face between his palms and pulled her to him.
"Stop it-" she said, pushing him away before he kissed her forcefully. It barely lasted a second before felt him pull away from her push as she attempted to push him off. It was Fitz and before she had a good sense of what was going on she watched his fist swing and crack against dr. Robert's jaw. He flew to the concrete curb under him and sank to the ground, unconscious. In a rage, Fitz grabbed him and pulled him up, and shook him violently. Just a second later he woke, startled. Blood was running from his mouth.
"The next time you fucking touch her will be the last time you have hands," Fitz barked.
Instantly she was lifted off the ground as Alex whisked her inside the building so she couldn't see the interaction between Fitz and dr. Roberts.
She was still too shocked to process what happened. She couldn't believe dr. Roberts showed up to the hospital drunk much less to sexually assault her.
"We'll take care of it," Alex said to her as he hurried back outside. It did nothing to calm her nerves and she was afraid of going back outside to see what was going on.
She took a few deep breaths, as her therapist suggested, and decided that going back outside would cause her even more stress which could possibly be detrimental to her pregnancy. After a few more breaths she headed towards the elevators and pushed everything that had just occurred behind her but as she stepped off a sudden, painful, and dizzying headache took her. She stopped and leaned against the closest wall and took a few more breaths and held her stomach. Once the dizziness passed she went inside the elevator and headed up to her floor. She knew eventually Fitz would call her and she would speak to him but stressing about whatever was going on outside or the fall out of it all wasn't good for her so she decided to try her best not to.
It was difficult and it took just minutes into her shift for the pain to begin to materialize on the right side of her belly. When it didn't go away after a few minutes she walked to Avila at the nurses' station.
"Avila, can you-"
Olivia's pager went off before could finish her sentence. She checked her message and then looked at Avila, "what's going on?"
"All the neurosurgeons are booked and there's a GSW trauma coming in dr. Roberts is on call but we can't get him so we need you to work on this."
"With who?"
"One of the trauma attendings, we're paging dr. Scott as well."
Olivia groaned and Avila chuckled, "you're the best neuro-resident, what do you want me to do?"
"It's not you- I'm just not having a great day. Can you check my blood pressure after I'm done with the trauma?"
Avila nodded, "are you okay? Do you want me to do it now?"
Olivia shook her head, "even if you did and my pressure is 160 over 140 of something I'd still have to go do this surgery so I might as well do it after."
"I feel bad, let's do it," Avila said.
"It's okay- I just-," Olivia groaned, "I felt a little pain on my right side earlier and I know I have to be careful so I wanted to get checked out it's okay though. I can wait. Which O.R?"
"Are you sure?" Avila asked.
"I can get through surgery. I'm sure."
"O.R 6 is open so prepare for that one and then let me know when you're done."
Olivia nodded and headed off to O.R. to prepare for the emergency surgery. She scrubbed in and readied herself as staff around her prepared for surgery as well. She was surprised when Abby scrubbed in to join the surgery. She's been stuck in trauma surgery earlier in her shift but now she came over to assist dr. Scott. Her annoyance with Abby over the dinner party had faded since over a month passed and there have been no other incidents. They barely had time for a quick greeting before the patient was wheeled into the O.R.
Just 30 minutes into the surgery and already she was beginning to feel her symptoms again. She had waves of dizziness and after almost two hours she successfully removed the bullet, now she was trying to close up. She decided she probably couldn't completely close the skull but she wanted to try to control the bleeding before handing off the patient.
She fought but after a while she realized she could no longer continue and stopped, hoping that taking a moment to breathe would help. She felt jittery and anxious, she was in and out of dizziness and she stopped and stared down into the brain of the man in front of her, her vision began to blur.
"Dr. Pope," Abby said.
She waited for Olivia to respond but she didn't.
"Dr. Pope," the trauma surgeon dr. Scott called. "I'm sure you know this is a marathon, not a sprint," he quipped.
Olivia blinked rapidly and it seemed the more she blinked the less she could see. The dizziness increased and as the seconds ticked by she could no longer grip the surgical clamp in her fingers.
Blur turned the darkness as she lost her strength and began to fall.
"Catch her," one of the attendings yelled and in a quick step Abby was behind her to catch her before she hit the floor.
When she shuffled in her sleep she felt attachments all over her body and quickly opened her eyes. Fitz was immediately beside her. She was in a hospital bed and when she looked around she was attached to several monitors which made it hard to move. The clock across the room read 3:25am.
"Livie-" he said softly as he came to her.
"What happened?" she asked.
"You had a seizure during surgery," Fitz said.
"A what?" she asked, confused and surprised.
"I had a seizure?" she questioned.
Fitz pressed the nurse call button as Avila told him.
Olivia reached under her blanket and felt her belly, "is she okay?"
Fitz nodded. "Do you remember what happened?"
"I started to get headaches and feel dizzy after Alex took me inside but it would come and go…until it didn't."
"Why did you call me?"
"I was trying to stay calm and not stress out about what happened this morning which obviously didn't work."
Dr. Bee, dr. Fencer, Abby, and Avila walked in.
"Olivia, how are you feeling?" dr. Bee asked.
"Not sure yet, I just woke up," Olivia said.
The group of them walked to her and began to examine her.
"So, how did it happen?" Dr. Fencer asked.
"I don't know, I wasn't feeling that great before the surgery but I thought I could get through it. I'd told Avila I wanted her to check my blood pressure after I was done because I had a feeling it was elevated."
"What do you think triggered it?"
"Stress," Olivia answered.
"I was afraid of that answer. Your BP was 200 over 120, Olivia," Dr. Bee said.
Olivia's mouth fell open, "what?"
"You were in hypertensive crisis and I'm worried because a woman your age shouldn't be having a seizure on your first hypertensive episode and so that tells me that we have to be extremely cautious," Dr. Bee said. "We managed to get your down to 150/100 but that's still extremely high as you know."
Olivia took a breath, "so what now."
"We have you on anti-seizure meds and labetalol and nifedipine for hypertension as well as the corticosteroids to continue to develop her lungs," Dr. Fencer said. She explained the drugs for Fitz's benefit.
"We performed another doppler ultrasound and so at this point, we're diagnosing FGR, it doesn't change the strategy but-"
"What's FGR?" Fitz asked.
"Fetal growth restriction, if it just means that your daughter's weight places her at about the 10-15th percentile of fetuses her age. It's really just a technical term to classify what we already knew, which is that she's underweight."
"How much does she weigh and how much is she supposed to weigh?" Fitz questioned.
"By our estimates, she weighs just under 2 pounds and ideally she should weigh at least a pound more to put her in the 90th percentile."
Fitz nodded.
"You're days from your 3rd trimester and so right now, we need to run out the clock to get you as close to 36 weeks as possible. With preeclampsia this severe and with your incompetent cervix, dr. Bee and I are in agreement that it would be best if you transition to a modified schedule for the remainder of your pregnancy."
Olivia nodded, "if that's what I need to do then I'll do it."
Both doctors nodded as well, "now I think we need to have a frank conversation about what's possible- actually, I think Dr. Whelan and Avila you can step out," Dr. Bee said.
They both nodded and left.
"So," Dr. Bee began again. "Right now we need to figure out what does more harm than good. Financially, are you able to not work for the remainder of your pregnancy?"
Olivia nodded.
"And I know you were granted leave and so I think that right now, the safest way forward is for you to take that leave. I don't think you can manage these intense surgeries anymore or these working hours."
Dr. Fencer began next."So, we're not saying absolute bed rest because you and I know that sometimes that does more harm than good but working as much as you do is not sustainable with a pregnancy as high risk as yours so basically the consensus is that you go home and relax. Try to avoid stressful situations, obviously, no vigorous exercise but walking is still fine, no lifting anything over 10/15 pounds and I think for now sex that's not physically vigorous is fine as long as you aren't experiencing any bleeding or pain."
Olivia nodded then smiled as she turned to Fitz, "can you tell him that bed rest means I can leave the bed because he'll literally carry me to the toilet."
Fitz shook his head and forced a smile.
"She can leave the bed," Dr. Bee said as she laughed, "ideally, we want her to move around so walking, stretching, and activities of that nature are totally encouraged. Think of her as a pampered stay-at-home girlfriend."
Fitz finally laughed, "I offered her that job months ago but she wanted to use her brain instead. Now, look at you."
Olivia guffawed and laughed, as did both doctors."I'm actually excited, I can spend two months at home, online shopping, eating and getting massages and manicures and having tons of sex."
"That's the spirit," Dr. Fencer said. "And remember to avoid stress."
"The stress literally snuck up on me today," Olivia said, meaning it literally. "I'll definitely try to be more careful. I just need her to get here, safe and healthy."
Fitz leaned over and kissed Olivia on the forehead. Just as he leaned up Maya walked in, panicked, "Livie," she said quickly as she walked over and wrapped her arms around her. "Fitz, told me you had a seizure- are you okay- I'm sorry I took so long baby, I was asleep when Fitz called."
"It's okay, mom," Olivia said with a smile, "I promise I'm feeling better."
Maya sighed, distressed, "oh god," she said as she kissed her against the hair and hugged her again. "I can't believe you had a seizure."
Dr. Bee and Dr. Fencer both stepped back. "We'll come back in a few minutes to finish our discussion," Dr. Bee said.
Olivia and Fitz both nodded.
It was later in the morning. Maya went for tea for her and now it was just Fitz in the room with her. Dr. Bee and Dr. Fencer agreed to keep her there until noon. Her blood pressure was taking some time to go down and they were waiting to get it to a normal range before they felt confident discharging her.
"What happened with Dr. Roberts?" Olivia asked.
He immediately became annoyed but he tried to measure his temper, "Olivia, you had a fucking seizure while 6 months pregnant and you're worried about that piece of shit- after what he did to you?"
"Fitz, I'm not worried about him, I just want to know what happened?"
"Olivia you need to avoid stress, asking about him isn't really avoiding stress."
She nodded but was undeterred, "Are you gonna tell me?"
"I broke his fucking hand- it's funny 'cause I assumed it would keep him from being here and sexually assaulting you but now you won't be here either."
"And you punched him in the face?"
"I should have kicked him in the face instead," Fitz said then he took a breath, "I know it's what caused this and I feel like shit so can we stop talking about it."
"No, it's not what you did, it was just that it happened. I was genuinely surprised he did that and I don't know if it makes me naive but I was shocked."
"If you're shocked then you don't know men," he said. "Do you think I react the way I react or do the shit I do because it's fun? I've spent the last decade of my life around men and the worst ones are always the ones that try to disarm you by being nice but as soon as you give them the smallest opportunity to hurt you they will."
"You're right- I know but it's hard figuring who's really nice and who's just pretending to be."
"Just assume everyone is the worst and you'll never be surprised. That's what I do."
"Even me?"
Fitz laughed, "Not you. Never you."
Olivia smiled, "I was just making sure but that still doesn't help the stress."
"The stress came from you worrying about all the new ways he was gonna make you miserable at work because you rejected him and I hit him. You were worried it would fuck your career, weren't you."
"Essentially," she said.
He chuckled humorlessly, "I'd rather beat him to death with a bat than let him sabotage your career that you're literally working yourself into seizures to have."
Olivia laughed, "I'm officially a bad person for laughing at that?"
"You're not gonna get me to say you're a bad person."
She laughed again then she sobered, "I know this scared you and I'm sorry- I should have stopped as soon as I felt off but I didn't think I was headed to a seizure. I'll try to be more careful."
"I was scared but you didn't do anything wrong baby, so don't apologize."
Olivia nodded and reached for him. He stood from the chair beside her bed and kissed her lips softly. Olivia caressed his cheek and deepened the kiss just as Maya walked in.
"Livie honey, I have some peach ginger tea for you."
"My favorite-" Olivia said as she broke the kiss.
Fitz sat down and Maya handed him a cup of coffee, "I got one for you too Fitz."
"Thanks," he said.
Maya sat on the couch on the other side of the bed and began sipping her tea. They sat for the better part of the morning until Olivia fell asleep. By afternoon they checked her pressure as she was down to 130/80 and they decided that was sufficient to discharge her.
One week later.
After leaving her appointment with Dr. Fencer, she was sitting in the drive-thru line of Wendy's with Fitz.
"What do you want?" he asked as he reached the speakers.
"Nuggets, fries, and a frosty," she said as she scrolled through her phone.
Fitz ordered the food and then drove around to pay and collect it at the window. Once he got the food he handed it to her and she immediately dug into the bag and began eating the fries. She grabbed a nugget and fed it to Fitz.
He'd been in an extraordinarily good mood because, for the last week, Olivia had been home with him 24/7 for a week and would be for at least the next 5 months. The latest doctor's appointment went relatively well in the sense that nothing had gotten worse. She was now 28 weeks pregnant.
Fitz chewed on the nuggets and took a sip of her drink from the cup holder.
"Okay, names again. We need to settle on a name," Fitz said.
"Sienna Penelope Grant," Olivia said. "I think."
Fitz laughed, "you think?"
Olivia nodded and fed him another nugget as she ate.
"I like it but give me some more options. We'll decide right now and stick to it."
"Your mom is dying because she wants to embroider her name on a bunch of toys and clothes and blankets and so far we're blank."
Fitz laughed, "so let's decide now and agree."
"Okay," Olivia said. "Do we agree that Sienna is her first name?"
"No. I told you I like Giselle also," Fitz said.
"I live Giselle too but there's no nickname for that. With Sienna, we can call her Cece for short."
"True so let's agree that her name is Sienna Grant and we'll keep figuring out middle names."
Olivia grinned and nodded in agreement, "okay so our daughter's name is Sienna."
"Don't change your mind," Fitz said with a smile.
"I won't."
"Okay now let's talk about what we don't want to talk about. You heard what the doctor said. She said they might need to do a hysterectomy. How do you feel?"
"I don't want that," Olivia said with a chuckle. "I don't want to lose an entire organ but I'll choose that over the alternative any day."
"Do you want more children?" he asked. It was not something they'd ever spoken about because once her pregnancy became high-risk, he wasn't something he could consider.
"Yes- I think but this pregnancy has been so scary that it's hard to think about that right now but even so I don't want to put us in a position where we don't have that option in the future. Even if I'm able to keep my uterus, I don't know if I ever want to be pregnant again. I can't risk it again."
"So?"
"So I think that if the hysterectomy happens then I'll freeze my eggs. I don't want to be pregnant again but I want the option to have more kids."
He nodded in agreement.
They drove home and as they had done for the last week, laid in bed to watch tv. They ate together, bathed twice a day together, dressed together, and slept together. They even began taking short, slow walks together down the boardwalk by their apartment every other day to keep her lightly active.
Weeks passed. Olivia made it to 7 months. She still hadn't had another health scare. Her blood pressure was slightly elevated but never skyrocketed as it had before. She was enjoying her time at home with Fitz more than she thought possible.
It was Saturday and the night of her baby shower. She dressed with Fitz after taking a day nap after the usual afternoon sex session. She'd done her hair and manicured her nails the day before. Catherine planned her baby shower at their new house. They'd built a glass atrium adjoined the house to cover the indoor pool. There was ample space in the atrium and they discussed with the contractor and decorator filling the atrium with indoor plants, a bar, and a lounge space. She'd only seen pictures of the atrium and house up until that point. The renovation and decoration were over and they were set to move in a week. The construction took just over three months. She wasn't sure what Catherine had planned for them nor was she sure who would be there but she was excited to finally see the finished, furnished home and celebrate her baby being showered with love and gifts.
She wore a Valentino pink mini dress with pretty embroidered flowers and a sweetheart neckline. It was a-line cut with pockets. She wore it with matching pink flat sandals. Her stomach had grown in the weeks since she'd been home but it was still small for her gestational age.
Fitz wore black pants and a white long-sleeve shirt and jacket.
He drove the Mercedes Maybach. The shower began at 8pm and they left their apartment just after 7:30.
They arrived just after 8pm. Cars lined the street outside their automatic gate. When Fitz pulled up one of the guards stood at the security booth and opened the gate for them. Fitz drove down the long driveway. The lights were on in their gargantuan mansion and they could hear music from the speakers placed over the entire property. Fitz parked in one of the five garages attached to one wing of the house. They headed through the garage entrance into the house to the kitchen entrance. It was stunning, just like the vision board and the pictures and videos from all the meetings and viewings. She smiled as she saw it but it wasn't time for a tour. Fitz held her hand as they headed to the atrium on the other side of the house. Olivia couldn't keep a smile from her lips as she walked through her newly finished home.
When they opened the door to the atrium and entered the room, it was full. Olivia was shocked.
Everyone turned to them when they entered.
"The mom and dad are here," Arianna yelled.
Catherine hurried over and hugged Olivia, "Olivia, you look utterly gorgeous." she turned to Fitz, "honey, you look alright."
"Thanks, mom."
Olivia smiled and looked for Maya in the room and saw her rushing over. Catherine released her from the hug so Maya could hug her. It was still awkward between Catherine, Gerry, and Maya but they were cordial for the week that Gerry and Maya had been in Boston.
"Look at my daughter," Maya said, proud and tearful as she hugged her and caressed her belly. "You look so beautiful."
"Thanks, mom," Olivia said, almost tearful.
"Hey, no crying," Fitz scolded.
Maya laughed and playfully hit his arm. "You know where she gets it from."
Gerry hugged them both and Arianna did as well then they all exchanged greetings.
Catherine smiled at the interaction and then gestured to the room. It was filled with pink peonies and candles. There was a large balloon arch with different shades of pink and the room was filled to the brim with decor. Antique gold chairs surrounded the well-set tables and there were large floral arrangements at the center of each table. The pool was filled with water and there were lights underneath the water. There was a DJ close to the bar playing music from his small computer setup. On the other side of the atrium was a pile of gifts stacked on top of each other.
Olivia wasn't sure who everyone was but regardless she was overjoyed at how everything turned out.
Group by group all of her guests came to her and Fitz, congratulating them on the baby. She met other members of Fitz's family, a few of his aunts and his one uncle, and some cousins. Some members of her own family had come as well from Maya's side. Her aunt, who Maya had fallen out with years earlier was there, as were some of her cousins. A few doctors, some nurses and nurse assistants, and staff from the hospital were there as well, gushing over her home.
In the midst of it Maya walked over to her with two plates of finger food and handed one to her, "here honey, eat something." she said then she handed the other to Fitz.
"Thanks, Maya," he said.
They continued eating and talking until Arianna grabbed the mic from the DJ's table and cleared her throat.
"Okay, this is the part of the evening where we play some games," she said. Servers walked around handing out cards and pens. Olivia and Fitz sat at the table with Maya, Catherine, and Gerry.
"Are you playing mom?" Olivia asked.
Maya read through the card. It contained a list of questions she was supposed to guess. "I don't know the answer to half of these," she said.
"Neither do I," Catherine said with a smile.
Once all the servers handed out the game cards, Arianna began."I'm gonna give everyone time to fill out the cards then we'll go over the answer in 15 minutes."
There was a lot of chatter and laughter in the room as everyone collectively filled out the cards and the servers collected them.
At the end of the 15 minutes, Arianna pulled Fitz and Olivia to the mic and began. "So I'm gonna read the first question: Who said I love you first?" Arianna asked.
Olivia grinned and rolled her eyes. "I did it unintentionally a few times then finally admitted it after a while."
Everyone laughed.
"Who was happier when they found out about the baby?'
They both looked at each other.
"I was," Fitz said. "Olivia freaked out."
They laughed again.
"If you're two for two, you're doing good, "Arianna said. "Who is more nervous about labor?"
"Fitz," Olivia said before he could answer.
"Who picked the baby's name?"
"Fitz."
"My brother's been busy," Arianna said. "Who plans to change more diapers?"
"Fitz," Olivia answered.
"Who is the most stubborn-"
"Olivia," Fitz answered quickly.
The room erupted into laughter. Arianna continued until she reached the end of the list. They awarded the winner and played a few more games before Olivia opened a handful of her presents.
At the end of the shower, once again they were surrounded by guests, wishing them a good birth and happy parenthood. After most guests had gone Abby and Avila and Justin approached her, "you look stunning girl," Avila said to Olivia.
Olivia laughed, "thank you."
"What's stunning is this house," Abby said. "The pictures you showered on me didn't do it justice."
Olivia grinned, "I'm in love with it. It's so perfect."
Avila nodded, "yeah, this place belongs in architectural digest but back to you, your bump is so cute and that dress-" she gushed.
"Thank you," Olivia said.
"Yeah, you too are such a cute couple," Abby said. "When am I gonna see you again?"
"Maybe you and Avila can come over for brunch in a week or so. We're getting ready to move in."
"I'd love that, can Simone make that stuffed Salmon thing I like," Abby said.
"Sure," Olivia said.
"So what about me? I'm not invited?" Justin asked.
"No," Olivia said.
Abby and Avila laughed.
"I've always been nice to you Olivia but I'm not getting treated nicely back," he defended.
"You're not a nice person," Olivia countered.
"You know, that's why I didn't get you a gift."
"Oh no, I don't know what I'm gonna do without your gift," Olivia teased.
Fitz chuckled and shook his head, as did Abby and Avila.
"I've been moving around for a while so I think it's time for me to go home," Olivia said. "My feet are starting to hurt."
Fitz nodded in agreement, "let's get you home."
Olivia changed into her long white cotton nightgown. Catherine bought them for her and she loved them because they were comfortable to sleep in. She brushed her teeth and groomed herself for bed and now she was waiting for Fitz. She lay in bed, reading and replying to all the text messages from the baby shower. After a while, Fitz walked out of the bathroom and lay beside her on the bed. He pulled her against him and wrapped his arms around her belly.
"Our girl is almost done," he said as he kissed her shoulder. "We're almost there."
Olivia smiled, "do you hear that baby Sienna, you're almost done cooking."
Fitz smiled as he turned her around. "It's funny, I've been thinking about every worst-case scenario since they diagnosed you and that hasn't been the case so far. I don't wanna jinx it."
Olivia nodded, "it'll be okay. I think not working is the best thing I could've done because I'm sure it would've continued to get worse if I did.
She leaned in and kissed his lips, "my nipples are getting tingly."
Fitz smiled as he kissed under her neck and slowly pulled the straps of her nightgown off her shoulder. He pushed it down further until her breasts were visible. They were large and plump and the sight of them stiffened his cock instantly.
He leaned down and licked slowly over her nipple and then sucked it.
"Mmm," she hummed softly as she reached up and ran her hand through his hair. Fitz reached down between her legs, into her panties and slid his finger between her lips, and began slowly teasing his finger over her clit. He moved to her other nipple and sucked it hard.
Olivia drew in a breath and reached down and pushed down her panties quickly.
"Lick me," she whispered, full of want.
Fitz leaned up and pulled her legs open. She closed her eyes as she felt his lips between her legs, kissing her slowly.
"Ouu," she moaned as she wrapped her fingers in his hair. She arched her back and bit her lips and pushed Fitz up because she needed him inside her. He leaned up and quickly pushed down his pajama pants. He kneeled between her legs and pulled her onto his lap. Olivia held on to him and he lifted her slowly and gently then lowered her onto his penis. Only her tiny belly was between them as he held her close and began moving into her slowly. The only way they could have as much sex as they did was by being as gentle as possible and never going deep enough to disturb her stitches.
They orgasmed slowly and deeply from their ultra-gentle lovemaking and once he finished he lifted her off him slowly and laid her down.
"Hold me," Olivia said softly.
Fitz pulled up his pajama pants and laid behind her and wrapped his arms around her belly and caressed it gently. "I love you," he whispered. "Didn't think I could love someone as much as I love you."
"I love you too," Olivia returned. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Fitz took a breath and kissed her shoulder before he clapped the lights off and they both drifted off to sleep.
The next morning when Olivia woke Fitz was already gone from bed. He liked to work out early in the morning and so while he was gone she showered and brushed her teeth and groomed herself. Catherine, Arianna, and Maya were coming over to have brunch with her and then they planned to go through all the gifts from the baby shower and write thank-you notes. It was Sunday morning and she wanted to have a restful day since the baby shower was so hectic. She asked Simone to come in on Sunday just to prepare brunch and then head out.
After she dressed she went downstairs to check on Simone. She prepared crispy lobster eggs benedict and a strawberry kale and walnut salad along with toasted sourdough and a selection of cheese, butter, and jams. She made a mimosa for Catherine and Arianna and just plain orange juice for Olivia and Maya. She also baked Olivia's favorite lemon blueberry scones. Arianna was still in town but she was at the same hotel as Maya and Gerry.
She sat for just a while in the kitchen, drinking tea before Maya texted her that she was close and Catherine did the same moments later. Just about 5 minutes later Maya walked into the apartment. The living room was filled with gifts and she smiled at the sight and at Olivia.
"Mom," Olivia said with a smile. "Good morning."
"Good morning baby," Maya said as she kissed her cheek. Her hair was freshly blown out and her nails manicured. They had been going to the salon together for the weeks since she'd been home and she didn't remember her mother looking as done up as she did since she was a child.
"Catherine is gonna be here any minute," Olivia said.
Maya nodded as she followed Olivia to the kitchen after taking off her light jacket. It was springtime now and the weather had turned.
As she approached the kitchen she smelled the delicious food Simone had prepared.
"Oh lord Olivia, that woman knows how to cook," Maya said with a chuckle.
"I heard that," Simone said with a grin as Maya approached.
"Yes, Simone, you keep me very well-fed," Olivia said as they sat on the stools at the kitchen island. Olivia thought it was more casual and intimate to eat there instead of in the large dining room.
"So how did you like the baby shower," Olivia asked.
"It was very well put together," Maya said. "Better than anything I could've put together."
"I loved the flowers and food- ugh, it was perfect. I didn't expect that many people to be there. I definitely didn't expect aunt Marie to be there."
Maya laughed, "Well once I got involved I decided to connect with our family. You should have everyone there to celebrate my granddaughter. Therapy probably helped, I was the one who caused the problem with Maire so I had to fix it. You two had a good relationship before."
Olivia nodded and Maya laughed, "Maybe I wanted to show off my baby girl and that gorgeous house Fitz bought you."
"It's beautiful isn't it?" Olivia gushed.
"Stunning and so I wanted to ask, now that I know it's so big. Am I gonna have a room there? I heard Catherine talking to Fitz about staying in the guest house after the baby is born."
Olivia smiled, "of course, you will- although I don't know how long you'll want to stay? They'll stay for the first year or so."
"I can do the same," Maya said with a smile. "I just want to be there for you and baby as much as I can."
"There's more than enough space momma and thanks for asking but now I have to ask you: how do you feel about Catherine?"
"I think she's a nice woman. She was a little standoff-ish at first but she got better."
Olivia nodded, "she's great. I just want you two to get along."
"We do," Maya said. "She let me help a lot with the shower and I appreciated it."
"Great," Olivia said.
"How are you feeling today?"
"Good. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. They wanna check her lungs and weight and all that good stuff."
"My little Sienna," Maya said. "I can't believe I'm gonna have my first granddaughter."
"I know," Olivia said. "Didn't plan to have any children until well after my residency."
"Man plans and god laughs. Isn't that the saying?"
"I'd like it better if it said 'woman' but point taken," Olivia quipped.
"You're so liberal," Maya teased.
The doorbell rang and Olivia got up to answer but Maya stopped her and went instead. She let Catherine and Arianna in and to her surprise Fitz was with them as well after returning from his workout. They ate together and then moved to the living room to open gifts and write thank-you notes and when they were finished it was past lunchtime. After Maya, Catherine, and Arianna left they headed back to their bedroom to relax for the rest of the evening and order a pizza for dinner.
The next afternoon she headed to Dr. Fencer's office for her doctor's appointment. As usual, Fitz was with her. She was on the exam table waiting for Dr. Fencer to perform her sonogram after the initial examination and questioning.
"It's gonna be cold," she said as she spread the gel on her stomach.
Olivia smiled, "it always is."
She spread the gel and spread it over her belly with the probe and Fitz stood by, ready to watch the screen.
"Let's see little baby Sienna," Dr. Fencer said. "By the way, I can't stop gushing about your baby shower. It was gorgeous, all those peonies, the food, the music, the favors, the house was gorgeous. It was a good night."
Olivia smiled, "I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did too, especially since I didn't have to do any work."
She laughed as 4d images of the baby came on the screen. Olivia immediately turned to Fitz to see him grinning. Every week when he saw her his reaction was the same.
"There's plenty of fluid around her so you can see her clearly."
Fitz nodded as dr. Fencer moved the probe around and moments later all three watched her yawn.
"Did she just yawn?" Ftiz asked.
Olivia nodded.
"Oh my god," he said amused.
Dr. Fencer continued to examine her in the images. "It looks like she's gained some weight."
"I thought the same thing too," Olivia said.
"It looks like a few ounces and you know, we'll take it. This is good news."
"Great news, I want her fat and squishy."
Dr. Fencer laughed and switched to 2d images. "Now for the not-so-fun part."
"I'm ready," Olivia said as she took a breath.
Fitz held her hand tighter as Dr. Fencer examined her placenta. She stared, extremely focused for a few moments then began comparing the ultrasound image Olivia took a week before.
She took a deep breath before she spoke.
"So by the looks of it, your placenta accreta has now developed into increta. It's moved through the uterine wall Olivia so now we have to discuss some more options."
"We knew it could get worse," Olivia said.
"Yes, that's true but I didn't want it to get to this point. Now we have to consider more drastic measures like a partial hysterectomy to stop the bleeding after delivery."
Olivia took a breath, "I told you that anything you need to do to save my life if anything goes wrong then you should do it."
"I know," Dr. Fencer said. "And I know you know what a hysterectomy means now. Ideally, we'd only perform a partial hysterectomy, leaving your ovaries intact if you want to conceive more children through surrogacy, although as we discussed earlier it would be best to freeze your eggs. Have you decided?"
"Yes, we decided to freeze my eggs if that happens," Olivia said. "But we'd want to fertilize them first."
"And you know there's a legal aspect as well when it comes to ownership. Once the eggs are fertilized they are no longer just yours."
"I know," Olivia said. "Fitz is the only man I'll ever have more children with and if that doesn't happen I'm okay with just having our daughter."
Dr. Fencer nodded. "Another thing I'd like to discuss is intercourse. Your cervix is continuing to weaken so I think that sexual intercourse is no longer an option."
Fitz stiffened, "it was really great while it lasted."
Olivia laughed, glad he found some humor. "It was really great."
They moved to her office to finish their discussion. It lasted almost an hour before they left. As usual, they drove to Mcdonald's to get her fresh salty fries. Fitz was unusually quiet and she decided to give him time to digest the information he was given.
After driving in silence for a while she began, "so, how do you feel?"
"We knew it would get to this so I've been preparing to hear it but it's still hard to hear it all."
She smiled, trying to find some humor in their situation. "It is because she said we can't have any more sex."
She succeeded in making him smile, "I'd be dying if I didn't also get news that your placenta was getting worse."
"I know but it'll be okay."
"Will it, Livie? You keep saying that and as soon as I start to believe it something happens that reminds me not to."
"Baby, it'll be okay. I have to believe that."
"Olivia but what if it isn't? What if your placenta tears and we can't get you to the hospital fast enough or what if you do and then they open you up and you don't stop bleeding. There are some things that even the best surgeon in the world can't bring you back from Olivia and I know you know that."
Olivia tried to fight back tears but couldn't. They rolled down her cheeks and she wiped them away as fast as she could. "I can't think about it."
"Olivia, we have to talk about it."
"I can't talk about it," she said as she wiped her eyes, "I wish I could but I can't make a plan about my death or about my daughter that won't know me."
Fitz felt his eyes burn and pulled out of traffic unto the shoulder of the expressway. He needed to take a breath. He waited a moment to collect himself before he unlocked her seatbelt and pulled her into his arms. "I can't know how you feel but I know that I can't lose you either. I wouldn't fucking survive it. I couldn't live with myself if you bled to death while trying to give birth to our daughter."
He leaned back so he could see her face.
"I won't. They'll be careful- we have a plan-"
He shook his head, "come on Olivia."
"Baby, I know but that's all I've got right now," she cried softly. "It's gonna be okay. I know it will be. In a few weeks, we'll have our daughter and it'll all be okay. I promise."
Fitz nodded and kissed her lips softly, trying his hardest to be as optimistic as she was.
She leaned back and wiped her eyes. "Once she's strong enough we'll jet off to Paris and spend time with her all by ourselves without our parents."
Fitz leaned back and took a breath.
"Between Catherine, Maya, and Arianna I don't know when we'd get to hold her."
She smiled and locked her seatbelt around her torso. "It'll cause fights for sure."
Fitz pulled back into the traffic and continued to drive home. He didn't know why he usually started those conversations with her because they never usually resolved how he felt.
She began cramping two days later. Just one day after light cramping, the bleeding began that night. When she woke in the morning, she felt wet between her legs, the way she would if she got her period unexpectedly in the night.
She woke up and sat up slowly. Fitz was still asleep beside her. She tapped him lightly and he jumped up. "Livie?"
"I'm wet," she said softly and panicked.
"Olivia we can't have sex," Fitz groaned and he rubbed his temple from his instant headache.
"No," she said as she pulled back the blankets and pulled up her nightgown. She saw red between her legs.
"It's too much blood, you have to take me to the hospital-" she said.
Fitz sat up quickly and was frozen, staring at the blood between her legs.
"Fitz-" she called but he didn't move. He just stared, wide-eyed and frozen. "FITZ!" she yelled this time and he finally looked up at her. "It's too much blood, you have to take me to the hospital-"
He stood quickly and hopped her to her side of the bed. Olivia held him and stood slowly, only to feel a gush of blood come down. Olivia held her belly. "Fitz-" she called as she started crying.
Suddenly she felt a stabbing cramp so painful it knocked her off balance but Fitz caught her. It was then that he regained his senses and lifted her in his arms and rushed her downstairs as quickly as he could as she cried in his arms. Sergey was standing guard downstairs. It was the week of their move to the house and they were preparing for the moving company to come and begin boxing up their belongings.
Fitz rushed out and saw the guard and didn't bother stopping, "get me to the hospital now."
Fitz sat in the hospital waiting room. He'd called Maya and his parents and now they were all waiting in the waiting room- well, everyone except Maya who was walking around and bullying hospital staff into giving her more information. They waited for just over 2 hours before dr. Bee came out to see him. She spoke immediately, not leaving any suspense between them.
"She's okay, you can see her now," she said quickly as she led them to Olivia's hospital room. Fitz followed quickly, as did Maya and Catherine, and Gerry. Arianna had gone back to New York. He was bloodied but he asked for a change of clothes from Catherine.
When they went into the room Olivia was sleeping.
"Is she sleeping?" Fitz asked as she rushed over.
Dr. Bee nodded, "so there's been a partial tear of her placenta and because the placenta was so tightly attached to her uterine wall there was a lot of pain and a lot of blood even though the tear was minimal."
Fitz took a breath. Maya was on his other side now, caressing Olivia's cheek. "What happens now?" Fitz asked.
"Now we try to see how long we can hold on. Every day counts and so we're going to try to get her as far along as possible but right now, she can't go home. Thanks to the steroids your daughter's lungs have been developing well but she is still very underweight so at this point, if we take your daughter, she will survive but she is at just over half of her expected gestational weight and that is far from ideal."
"So you just want her to stay here and wait?" Fitz asked.
"That was the plan we discussed. The goal is to try to make it as far as we can."
"What if her placenta tears again- I mean what if she bleeds out"
"Then we'll be right here to perform the surgery right away."
Fitz was becoming agitated so he took a breath and ran his hand through his hair.
"What did you do to stop the bleeding?"
"The bleeding didn't completely stop but it slowed significantly and we also performed a transfusion so we will monitor her closely as the day progresses. We might have to perform the surgery as soon as tonight but let's all hope it doesn't come to that."
"When will she wake?"
"We gave her medication for the pain, she should be up in a few hours."
"But the longer we wait the worse it will be for her, won't it?"
"She indeed has a higher risk than the baby," Dr. Bee said with a nod.
"If the only con right now of taking the baby today is that she'll be a little underweight then I don't see why you can't take her now and we'll try to fatten her up after."
"She's almost 32 weeks, if she was at her normal weight then sure but your daughter is small Fitz, she needs more time."
"Dr. Bee, her placenta just ripped, she was literally screaming and bleeding, maybe it's better for the baby to be out, you said yourself that maybe her placenta isn't giving the baby enough of what she needs," Fitz argued.
"Fitz, trust me I know and I understand your fear here but we have to try. We'll watch her closely, we're running tests and based on the results we'll know which direction to move forward. Once we have to take her, we will."
"But you'll do everything to make sure she's alright?" Catherine asked.
"Of course, I will. She's a brilliant doctor-"
"She's more than a doctor," Fitz interjected, "and she's more than a little incubator so don't wait until it's too late for her."
"Trust me, Fitz, I understand, I truly do," Dr. Bee reassured him.
He nodded, not entirely convinced but he wanted to wait until Olivia woke to talk to her. Only she could give them permission to take the baby early. They'd been planning for months but now that he saw how bad it could get, all the plans didn't matter.
Catherine walked to him and hugged him, "thank you, dr. Bee," she said.
The dr. nodded and headed out.
"Sweetie, she'll be okay. Let me get you something to eat or drink-"
"-I'm not hungry, I'm not thirsty, okay," he said as he moved out of her arms and back to Olivia's bedside.
It took a few hours and many periodical checks from the staff before Olivia woke. She shuffled a bit before she opened her eyes and squinted, groggy and confused. She held her belly and when she looked up Fitz was beside her, and so were Maya and Catherine. Gerry sat on the couch by the window.
"Livie baby, are you okay? how do you feel?" he asked, frantic.
"Numb," Olivia said, "they must've given me something strong."
"Do you want me to call the doctors?" Catherine asked.
Olivia nodded, "what happened to me?"
"Partial placental abruption," Fitz said.
"What degree?"
He shook his head, ignoring her question, "You need to let them take the baby now Olivia."
She frowned, "what? I can't do that."
"Why not Olivia? This morning could've been bad- it was bad if this is the only way-" Fitz began.
"-She needs more time. Just a couple more weeks Fitz she's tiny-"
"She'll grow. A couple more weeks isn't the difference between life and death for her but it is for you."
"Fitz, we talked about this. You know we have to wait as long as we can."
"Fitz-" Gerry said as he stood, "let's talk a walk-"
"No- I need to talk to Olivia, alone," he said.
"Fitz-" Maya began.
"Mom, it's okay," Olivia said softly.
Maya kissed her forehead softly and stepped out, as did Gerry and Catherine. Fitz took a breath and passed at the end of her bed. "You don't understand Olivia and I feel like I'm going fucking crazy."
She stretched for him, "come here."
"No," he said, "don't try to distract me with affection. You always do that. Every time I bring up something you don't want to talk about, you want to hug and kiss and cry. No. We need to figure this out."
Olivia groaned and pulled back, "Fitz, she needs more time, you know she does, we knew this was a possibility and so we prepared for it. If the tests come back looking good, I want her to stay."
He walked over to her and held her face between his hands, "I can't lose you- don't you get that. You can't wait Olivia- I can't lose you, you have to take her out" he became frantic and Olivia held him and began to cry.
"Fitz, it's gonna be okay," she said. "I'll let them take her as soon as we need to, okay, I swear just please let us give her some more time."
He held her tighter and nodded. "I just need you both to be okay," he said, barely able to get the words out.
"Hold me," she said softly.
He moved behind her on the bed and laid down then wrapped his arms around her belly, careful not to shift her body. He lay with her, holding her until somehow they both drifted off to sleep.
Fitz woke before Olivia, surprised that he'd fallen asleep. Catherine was looking down at him with sad eyes and it alerted him immediately. When he sat up Dr. Fencer and dr. Bee was there along with another doctor and two nurses. He eased up slowly from Olivia's bed and was careful as he stood.
"What happened?" he asked.
We just need to wake her to examine her, Dr. Fencer said. He nodded and stepped back as she gently woke her. She groaned before she opened her eyes and held her stomach.
"Is there pain," Dr. Bee asked.
Olivia nodded slowly. Both doctors slipped on gloves from the glove box on the wall. "We need to take a look at you," dr. Fencer said. "Is that okay? Do you want anyone to step out?"
"It's okay," Olivia said as she nodded and looked at Fitz, remembering the conversation they had earlier. Gerry stood, "I'll give you some privacy," he said as he kissed Catherine tenderly against her hair then stepped out.
A nurse pulled back the blanket from Olivia's legs. Dr. Fencer moved her legs open and looked down. She turned to dr. Bee and she stepped closer and looked as well. They were both expressionless as dr. Bee pulled the blanket back over Olivia's legs and began to feel her belly with her fingertips. She was hooked up to monitors in the room though they were silent.
"Ouuu-" Olivia groaned and she stopped immediately.
"What?" Fitz asked.
"So there's significant bleeding," Dr. Bee said. "It slowed a bit earlier but now it's enough to cause worry. In the hour you slept you soaked through a pad."
Olivia took a breath, "what did the tests say?"
"Your daughter's oxygen levels are low and she's deceling according to the monitor. Your clotting factors are low, which isn't what we wanted to see-"
"-What does that mean?" Catherine asked.
"It means her blood isn't clotting as fast as it should to stop excessive bleeding and so if we were to perform surgery now, it might be hard to control or stop her bleeding."
"So what do you have to do, do you wait for it to get better?" Maya asked.
"We'll have to try a series of drugs to help your blood clot but we also have to consider that your blood pressure is still high and you're currently bleeding," Dr. Bee said. "Your placenta is torn and so that is also a major concern."
"So you're gonna take her," Olivia said, it was more of a statement than a question.
"Once we can do so safely," Dr. Fencer said. "So right now we're gonna clean you up and continue to monitor how you respond to the drugs. I suggest you eat something now because I'm thinking the surgery will take place tonight."
Olivia nodded and after the nurses changed her pad and cleaned her up they left. Fitz brought her over some of the food Catherine ordered. Gerry returned and they all sat close together. She could tell he was nervous but it took a few minutes before anyone brought up what the doctors said.
"So darling, it looks like Sienna might be coming a lot earlier than we intended," Catherine said. "I can't wait for her to get here and for it to all be over. You'll be healthy and so will she and we can rest easy."
Olivia nodded as she ate, "I'm just a little scared. I know I'll be okay but I'm worried about her, she'll be so tiny-"
"Baby, she'll grow, she'll be okay," Fitz said softly as he leaned over and kissed her stomach lightly.
She let out a soft breath, "she will. She'll be perfect but I just can't stop worrying until I see her and know she's okay."
"You know," Maya said. "I should probably go get your hospital bag for you and the baby-"
"Alex is bringing it," Fitz said, "don't worry."
"Fitz, honey you need to eat something," Catherine said.
"Mom, please stop trying to feed me," he said. Food was the last thing on his mind.
"Baby, you need to eat. You're gonna be there while they give me the c-section so I want you in your best shape," Olivia said with a smile.
Fitz pulled one of the plates from the small table and began eating. Olivia saw Maya smile but said nothing.
"So he listens," Gerry joked, "but only to Olivia."
"Shut up old man," Fitz said playfully.
Olivia tried not to laugh but smile because Fitz finally lightened just a bit.
The doctors came to check on her at 30-minute intervals. She was still bleeding in the evening and her vitals hadn't improved so they scheduled her surgery for 3am, just to give dr. Fencer and dr. Bee time to rest in the night. Olivia convinced Fitz to sleep and Abby, Avila, and a few of her resident friends came to visit her in a small group to talk and keep her company. She eventually fell asleep as well and woke up after midnight when they began preparing her for surgery.
A few hours passed before her nurses and the surgical technician came for her.
"So, are you ready, Dr. Pope?" one of the labor and delivery nurses asked.
Olivia shook her head, "I'm nervous but I know I'm in good hands."
"You are, you're one of the nicest residents here so we're gonna take care of you. Some other doctors won't get the same treatment but don't tell them we said that."
Olivia laughed, "I know exactly the doctor you're talking about, funny enough."
Fitz smiled and held her hand and kissed it. Maya was beside her as well. The hospital only allowed one support person during a c-section but they made an exception and allowed Maya to come as well.
The nurses wheeled her to the operating room and Fitz and Maya walked beside her. They finished preparing Olivia and then another nurse helped Fitz and Maya dress in protective gowns for the operating room before they were allowed to enter.
Once dr. Fencer and Dr. Bee arrived, they began. Olivia was awake for the procedure but would be put under once the baby was delivered so they could remove her placenta more carefully. They talked through it so Fitz and Maya were aware of what was going on. They stood beside Olivia, behind the screen. Fitz couldn't hold her hand because they were hooked up to monitors.
"Olivia, your heart rate is going up. I need you to relax okay," dr. Bee said.
She nodded, "I'm trying, I'm just nervous. I want to see her."
"Don't be nervous, your bleeding is controlled and she'll be out any minute."
"Are you okay?" Fitz whispered to her.
"Yeah," she whispered back.
Maya kissed her against her forehead, "you'll be fine baby. Just relax, she'll be worth it."
"Thank mom," Olivia said, then suddenly her eyes filled with water.
"Olivia," dr. Fencer said. "Take slow breaths." Her heart rate and blood pressure were rising. "Fitz, can you help her calm down? Grandma, you too."
Fitz leaned closer, "Livie, what's going on?"
"I'm scared," she said tearfully.
His eyes filled with water as well, "don't be, don't even think like that. You're strong, you're gonna stay calm and you'll be okay. She'll be okay too."
She nodded and took a slow breath as Maya tried to comfort her.
"Okay, one more cut and she'll be out, alright," dr. Fencer said.
Olivia smiled, "okay."
Maya kissed her again, "I love you so much, my Livie."
"Okay- here she is-" Dr. Bee said. As she lifted the baby out of Olivia's open incision, "Little baby Sienna."
"Is she okay?" Olivia asked tearfully. "How is she?"
"She's a lot fatter than we expected," Dr. Fencer said.
Olivia burst into tears of joy and smiled, "I have to see her." Fitz kissed her softly on the lips. "She's gonna be out of here in no time."
Olivia smiled and nodded. Moments later, they heard crying and it brought an even wider smile to her face. "Okay, here she comes dad, do you want to hold her, just for a second so mom can see her then we have to take her away to take care of her."
Fitz nodded as one of the doctors walked over to him and gently placed Sienna in his arms. She was wrapped loosely in a towel and she was smaller than he imagined. Her eyes were closed and she had feathers of reddish hair on her head. She felt so tiny and fragile in his arms that he was terrified to move with her. He swallowed deeply and moved closer to Olivia. His eyes were gushing with tears from the overwhelming feeling of love and protectiveness he had for his daughter and Olivia. Olivia watched him and smiled as he brought Sienna closer. She was tiny and beautiful.
"She's perfect," Olivia gushed tearfully "isn't she Fitz?"
He nodded and smiled, "I knew she would be, look at her mom."
"Take some credit dad," Dr. Fencer said as the room of doctors and nurses chuckled.
Olivia laughed, "look at her mom."
"I see her, Livie, she's beautiful."
"Okay, we have to take her now to look at her in the NICU," dr. Todd, the neonatal specialist said.
Olivia took a deep, shaky breath, "can I kiss her?"
The physician nodded and as she took her from Fitz gently she positioned her close to Olivia so she could kiss the top of her head and then she took her away with a group of nurses.
"Okay, we're gonna have to put her under now," Dr. Bee said. "You'll see her in a little bit."
Fitz kissed her softly on the lips, "you're gonna be okay. I'll be with Sienna until you're done. I love you."
"I love you too," she said shakily then paused before she spoke. "If anything happens-"
"Nothing will," Fitz said, drowning in tears.
Maya kissed her, "baby, you'll be okay. We'll be right out there waiting for you."
Olivia nodded again, "okay."
A nurse came over to them and led them out. It was hard to go but he knew the longer he stayed the worse it would be. When they stepped outside of the operating room the nurse helped them take off the gowns and then led them to the Nicu. Fitz's hands were shaking as they walked and Maya noticed. She held his hand as they walked to the Nicu to see Sienna.
Olivia stared at the white ceiling of the operating room and waited to fall under anesthesia.
"Alright Olivia," Dr. Bee said. "We're almost there. You'll feel sleepy in a few seconds."
She nodded, "don't lose me. I need to wake up for her."
Dr. Bee walked around the screen so she could see Olivia as she spoke. "You will wake up. We won't let anything happen to you. I don't make promises to my patients but I'm promising you right now. Enjoy this rest because it'll be the last one you have for a while with that precious little girl you're gonna take home."
Olivia nodded and moments later fell under blackness.
Fitz waited inside the Nicu while the doctors examined Sienna. Maya waited beside him.
"She's gonna be okay," Maya said softly, "both of them."
He nodded and smiled, "you're a grandma now."
"You're a father," Maya said. "You'll be a good one."
"Olivia says you'll be staying with us for a while,"
Maya nodded, "is that okay with you? I don't want you to feel like I just invited myself into your home but it would be easier if I could stay there once Sienna is home."
He smiled humorlessly, trying to distract himself from thinking of Olivia's surgery. "It's Olivia's home too. Her name is one the deed right beside mine."
"She never told me," Maya said. "But truthfully at my core, I'm a jealous woman. Knowing your parents would have access to her anytime they wanted because they lived with her made me jealous. I want the same opportunity to be with her as your parents."
"There's nothing wrong with taking your place in her life. You're her grandmother," he said
"My therapist said I value myself based on my place in someone's life," Maya said with a sardonic chuckle. "I got married too young, I barely knew myself, I didn't go to school and so Eli became my entire life and my entire personality. I was so proud to be a wife…his wife. I thought I'd be married to him forever and so there was no plan for when he was no longer in my life. When I had Olivia the same thing happened, my entire life became being a mother and wife. I didn't know what to do with myself when I was taking care of them. When he left me I could've let it destroy me. I had nothing and because Eli was a mean, spiteful bastard he gave me nothing."
Fitz was surprised and Maya could tell based on his expression.
"I told Olivia I wanted nothing from him because I didn't have the heart to tell her that father left us with nothing. Of course, he did it thinking that if he made us suffer enough that I'd come back but I couldn't risk my daughter and he refused to stop.
"My biggest regret is that I encouraged Olivia to follow in my footsteps. To keep herself naive and pure and marry young because she'd love being a wife and mother. I did it thinking that unlike me, she was smart so as long as she could take care of herself, she'd be fine but I was wrong and even when I saw that Herman wasn't right for her, I convinced myself he was because I couldn't admit to myself that I encouraged my daughter to do the same things in life that made me so miserable."
"Did you tell her this?" Fitz asked.
"I can't admit that to her but she knows. Why do you think she was so mad at me? It wasn't just because of you, it was everything that she'd been holding back."
"You should tell her," he said then smiled. "While you tell her that I'll admit to her that Eli never actually paid me the money he owed me, I just told her that so she wouldn't complain about all the money I was spending on her."
"Sadly, I'm not surprised," Maya said. "Even when he thought his daughter's life was in danger- I don't know how I stomached him for so long."
"I like this hate bonding over Eli but don't try to soften me up because eventually we're gonna have to kick all three of you out. Once Sienna's old enough so we can get our place back to ourselves."
Maya laughed, "I'm preparing myself to fight you two on that because it'll be hard to leave my beautiful little grandbaby."
"Right now, she's so small, so fragile, she needs every single one of us," he said. "Even my useless sister is flying in from New York to help out."
Maya slapped his arm playfully, "boy, stop." she said then laughed, "I still can't believe they pulled a little ginger out of my Livie."
Fitz laughed, "Both my mom and sister are redheads, my entire family is Scottish, and I still have distant relatives there."
"I figured it was something like that," she replied. "Don't worry you can give her the hair color, we'll give her some brown on her skin."
Fitz laughed, "At least she'll be able to tan and not burn up as I do in the sun."
Maya chortled.
They waited for a while, talking and joking until a NICU nurse came to bring them back to Sienna. They followed her quickly and when Fitz and Maya went into the room Sienna was inside an incubator with a feeding tube and oxygen tube.
"Why does she need those tubes?" He asked the neonatologist. It was jarring to see her that way when she was so fragile and tiny.
"She isn't ready to feed yet and we want to get her oxygen levels up. She needs help practicing to suck and swallow so while she develops those skills she needs to be fed through a tube," she said. "Otherwise, your daughter is healthy and developed nicely for her gestational age. She weighs almost 4 pounds which is small but larger than we expected based on the fetal scans. She is breathing well. Her eyes are sensitive to light so she won't open them for a while. I'm happy to tell you she's doing well, she just needs help with feeding and regulating her temperature and oxygen."
Maya smiled, "she is a tough little one."
Fitz smiled as well, "when can I hold her?"
"She's extremely fragile right now so right now, especially with all the monitors hooked to her, we encourage comfort holding or touching instead of cradling so you might want to just have her hold your finger or you stroke her legs gently, little touches like that."
Fitz nodded, "Can I?"
"Of course," she said, "we would just encourage you to wash your hands first."
He nodded and did as she requested before he sat in front of the incubator with Maya who washed her hands as well. He was content to watch as Maya used her index finger to gently stroke the back of Sienna's tiny hand as she whispered gentle words to her.
"Do you think Olivia's doing okay?" he asked as he watched Sienna.
"She is," Maya said. "I know she is. She's strong."
He reached into the incubators and gently stroked Sienna's little leg. Her skin was soft and pale and wrinkled. The diaper she wore seemed to swallow her up. There were heart rate monitors attached to her chest and another monitor around her hand and foot.
He stayed with her for a while, unwilling and unable to leave until the NICU team asked him to give them some space to care for her.
When he went back to find Catherine and Gerry they were in a different room.
"Fitz, it's been hours," she said frantically as he entered the room.
He'd forgotten completely about updating them on Sienna and Olivia and he didn't have his phone because he couldn't take it into the operating room.
"Is everything okay?"
"I haven't gotten an update on Olivia and Sienna is- she's beautiful mom," Fitz said softly.
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
"She's doing good, she's tiny, she weighs almost 4 pounds, and she has red hair but she can't feed yet so they gave her a feeding tube and oxygen tube."
"When will I be able to see her?" she asked.
"As soon as they'll allow you to. They might not let you touch her but you two can probably see her."
Catherine nodded as she walked to him and hugged him tightly, "I know this is a lot to take in. she'll be okay." Fitz nodded as she said the words and soon after Gerry was right beside him, embracing him as well. They stayed in the room for a while until Dr. Bee and Dr. Fencer walked in, "she's doing great," dr. Fencer said immediately, "surgery went well, we were able to remove her placenta and leave her uterus intact. There was more bleeding than we would have liked to see but it was not unexpected. She's Sleeping off the anesthesia right now but she should be awake in about 20-30 minutes."
Fitz looked up to the ceiling and let out the breath it seemed like he'd been holding forever. He felt light as a feather because the dread of a complicated delivery had been hanging over them for months and now it was finally over.
Maya audibly sighed and covered her face and Catherine grabbed onto Gerry, grinning happily as he held her.
"I have to see her," Fitz said without hesitation.
"She's right down the hall, I can take you to her."
Olivia woke up shivering. Fitz was standing right over her and staring down at her with a grin.
"You're a fucking goddess, you know that?" he said.
Olivia smiled, though she felt groggy and weak and could barely move her limbs. "Where's my little Cece?'' she said hoarsely. When she slightly turned her head she saw that Maya, Catherine, and Gerry were on the other side of her bed. Maya took her hand and held it. Dr. Fencer and Dr. Bee were there as well.
"Excuse me, are you seriously telling me now that you're a mom you plan to put our kid first because that's what it sounds like?" Fitz asked, his humor was dry but it made Olivia grin.
"Don't make me laugh Fitz, I don't want my stitches to rip," she said, still smiling.
He leaned over and kissed her lips softly, "so I guess Sienna and I will be fighting over you then because you didn't answer the question."
"I guess so," Olivia said.
"Well, she's a baby and she can't fight so-"
Olivia bit her lip and stifled a laugh, "-Fitz!"
Maya reached across and playfully slapped him as Gerry and Catherine chuckled as well. Dr. Fencer grinned, "she's gorgeous."
He smiled, "I love her so much. She's in the NICU, she has a feeding tube and oxygen but the doctor said she's doing really well."
"I need to see her," Olivia said.
Seconds later, Arianna appeared at the door. "Yay Liv, you're awake." She was carrying flowers and a few Chanel shopping bags. She said as she walked over. "My flight got delayed but I'm here."
"Hi Arianna," Olivia said with a smile.
Arianna walked over to her by the bed, "these are for you," she said as she dropped the bags on the floor and placed the flower on one of the tables along with a box of cupcakes. "That's your c-section gift."
"Thank you," Olivia said but then she turned to Fitz, "I really need to see her."
"So Olivia, why don't we talk about your surgery first," dr. Fencer said.
"I'm alive," Olivia said, "it can wait for a little until I see her."
"Olivia, you have to be very careful right now, you bled a lot during your surgery and so you really need to try your best not to move so your stitches can heal properly and you don't hemorrhage. Fortunately, we didn't need to resort to a hysterectomy but you still need to allow yourself to heal."
"I know I probably won't be able to hold her, which is hard enough but at least let me see her."
Fitz nodded, "I'll go to the NICU and bring her with the doctor."
Olivia nodded, "thank you."
"I'll come with you," Catherine said.
"No mom, it's okay," he said as he headed out.
Olivia waited as both her doctors talked to her about her surgery and recovery and about 15 minutes later Fitz returned with the neonatal physician and a few NICU nurses. Sienna was in a portable incubator.
"Oh my gosh," Olivia gushed as nurses pushed her inside the room. She was immediately drowning in tears as Sienna came closer. "She's so small." she cried.
Catherine and Gerry rushed over to see Sienna as did Arianna. "Good lord, she's gorgeous and a ginger too," Catherine gushed.
"She's beautiful," Gerry mused.
"Can you bring her closer," Olivia asked.
The nurse pushed as close as she could and though Olivia didn't have a great view of her she could see her. The sight of her hooked up to tubes and monitors sent her into a loud sobbing cry. Fitz moved over to her immediately. Dr. Fencer as well, "Olivia, you have to stop crying, you can't hassle yourself, you aren't in the clear yet."
Fitz wiped her eyes with his thumbs, "baby, she's gonna be okay."
Olivia sniffled back tears and tried to take a breath, "it's just not easy for me to see her like that."
"I know but she's okay and you're okay which is the only thing that matters. It's better for her to be in the NICU for a week than for you to try to make it 40 weeks and die in the process. I think growing up without a mom would scar her a lot more than a week in the NICU that she won't remember at all."
Olivia nodded and sniffled, "thanks. That makes me feel better."
He smiled and leaned down and kissed her lips softly and it made Olivia smile, "take a picture of her on my phone so I can look at her when they take her back."
Arianna grabbed her phone and began taking pictures of Sienna. "I'll send them in the group chat," she said. "She's so cute. She's gonna be my bestie, we're gonna be two little redheads, out on the town."
Maya laughed, and so did Catherine and Gerry. Fitz rolled his eyes playfully.
Olivia smiled, "I can't wait to hold her and snuggle her."
Dr. Bee laughed, "Soon okay. We just want to be really cautious with you. I'd say in about 2-3 days you can hold her and breastfeed as well, depending on how things progress."
"That's what I like to hear," she said with a grin.
Fitz spent his time between Olivia's recovery room and the NICU for the rest of the day. Catherine and Gerry were mostly in the NICU with Sienna. Fitz asked Arianna to help supervise the move from their apartment to the house so that when Olivia and Sienna were discharged, the house would be in order. She was hesitant but agreed to go to their apartment in the morning to supervise the move. Abby and Avila and the rest of Olivia's colleagues from her floor trickled in to see her and look at pictures of the baby. She had different doctors during the afternoon and night shifts since Dr. Bee and Dr. Fencer needed to be able to rest but through the night as they monitored her, her pressure began rising.
She was on pain medication for the surgery so she still felt numbness throughout her body. As they monitored her pressure she began getting bouts of shivers every few hours. Pain medication made her numb but she had regained movements in her arms and legs. She had trouble sleeping through the night and ended up going to bed in the early morning with Fitz dozing off close to her on the couch.
She woke almost noon, just in time to see Dr. Bee and the medical team walk into her room. She smiled when she saw Olivia was awake. "How did you sleep last night? Good, I hope."
"Not that great," Olivia said. "I didn't sleep until early morning."
She looked around and was surprised that neither Fitz nor Maya was there or even Catherine, only Gerry.
"He went to check on Sienna, Catherine's there too," he said. "Your mom went home to take a shower."
"Thanks, Gerry," Olivia said.
Now she was surrounded by doctors and nurses.
"Why didn't you sleep," Dr. Bee asked. "What's going on?"
"I don't know, I'm anxious…maybe."
"How do you feel emotionally? You had a traumatic birth."
"Overwhelmed," Olivia said. "I feel like I went through all of this and I can't even hold my baby and comfort her. That's what I need. I need this to be over so I can take her home. I'm trying to be patient but waiting and wishing and hoping is making me anxious."
"I understand, I really do," she said.
One of the nurses walked over, "Can I take your blood pressure?"
Olivia nodded. The nurse took her arm and locked the pressure cuff around it and took her pressure.
"140/90," the nurse said.
"That's a little better," Dr. Bee said, looking at the heart monitor beside her bed, "still not ideal but better. Your heart is normal," she said. "I want to check your incision site."
She lifted the blanket and moved aside her gown and began checking her stomach for tenderness. "Do you feel anything?" she asked Olivia.
"No. Can I have ice chips?"
One of the nurses nodded and headed out to get it for her and returned. Dr. Bee continued to examine her and left after taking notes. Just as she left Fitz walked in. "hey baby, you're up." he walked to her and gently kissed her lips. Olivia caressed his cheek lightly, "how's Cece?"
"They took her off the oxygen," he said.
Olivia gasped, "really?"
He nodded, "yeah. I put my finger in her little hand and she held it Live, she actually held it."
"I want to see her again. Can they bring her?"
"Of course," he said. "I just spoke to them about that. Mom is coming with her."
"Thank you," she said softly.
He nodded and kissed her against her hair. "How is the move going?"
"Not sure but that's why I pay people to do stuff for me."
She chuckled, "I miss her. Where is she?"
"She's coming-"
As soon as she said the words two NICU nurses and Catherine walked in with Sienna in the portable incubator. They rolled the incubator as close to Olivia as possible and she was able to lean slightly to see her. She smiled when she saw the round green pacifier in her mouth. Her eyes were still closed but she felt relief that she didn't have the oxygen tube.
"How is she doing?" she asked the nurse.
Catherine walked to her and hugged her lightly, "you made a gorgeous girl."
"She's progressing. Her oxygen levels are great. Her liver is great, no jaundice. Now we just need her to feed to fatten up. Soon, she'll be able to breastfeed or bottle feed."
"Thank you for taking care of her," Olivia said to the nurse.
"Please, it's my job and it's a pleasure. Everyone around here loves you," the nurse responded.
"You're too sweet."
The nurses stayed with Sienna as long as they could. Olivia ate light food and talked with Fitz and Catherine. Maya returned from showering as well. After the nurses took Sienna back to the NICU, Olivia's nurses came and had everyone leave the room as they helped her to freshen up and examined her once again. Her blood pressure was lower and so was her heart rate.
When she was finished, they allowed everyone to enter again.
"Fitz honey, you need to go home and shower," Catherine said.
Olivia laughed as Fitz raised his arm and sniffed his underarm. "Yikes. I showered here yesterday."
"Honey, we left this morning for showers, Maya left, just go take a nice hot bath and rest up and come back later on."
Fitz groaned.
Olivia chuckled, "Baby, it's okay, I'll be right here when you get back."
He leaned over and peppered kisses on her lips and face. "Fine!" he said as he leaned up.
"What should I bring you back?"
"Ice cream and if you can get that delicious Margherita pizza from that place- I want a whole box to myself."
He laughed, "you'll eat one slice and you'll be stuffed."
"A whole pizza Fitz, I'm eating it."
"Sure," he said sarcastically.
"I love you, hurry up and come with my pizza and ice cream- but good ice cream from that ice cream parlor I love."
"I know what you like," he said, pretending to be exasperated.
"Hurry up because when you come back I want to see if they'll let me go in the wheelchair to the NICU."
"Okay," he said as he leaned in and kissed her. "We'll discuss your c-section gift a little later on."
She grinned, "what are you gonna get me?"
He ignored her with a smile as he grabbed his phone and headed out. Olivia smiled and turned to Maya who was smiling, "I didn't know a c-section gift was something people got."
Olivia smiled, "I think he just looks for any opportunity to give me presents."
Catherine laughed, "Gerry bought me a new car when I had Fitz and with Arianna, he got me a stunning gypsy horse. Those were my push gifts"
"Do you think he'll get me a horse?" Olivia asked.
Catherine shrugged and smiled, "knowing my son it'll probably be bigger than that and you'd deserve it."
Olivia smiled, "I'm gonna take a nap, I'm feeling a little tired."
Maya nodded and pulled the blankets up to make her comfortable, "alright baby."
"Thanks mom..can you stay with Sienna and just make sure she's okay. I don't want her to be there alone."
Maya nodded and smiled, "I sure will."
Olivia closed her eyes and fell asleep moments later. Maya, Catherine, and Gerry left to visit Sienna, promising to return in a few minutes since they agreed Olivia wouldn't be left alone for any time over a few minutes.
Gerry was sitting on the couch, reading a book when a squad of doctors and nurses ran into the room. He jumped up, alarmed, "what's going on?"
Dr. Bee pulled off the sheet from Olivia and saw that her bag attached to her urine catheter was filled with blood and blood was soaked between her legs and on the hospital sheets underneath her. Her eyes opened wide. The nurses ran around to the monitor. Another one began trying to wake her. "Dr. Pope, can you hear me? I need you to wake up." Olivia didn't move. She was now limp and unresponsive on the bed. As they swarmed around her trying to wake her and watching the readings on the machine plummet rapidly.
"What's going on?" Gerry asked again. He could barely register what happened. Olivia was sleeping or so he thought.
"Get me an open OR now!" Dr. Bee barked.
"Somebody tell me what the hell is going on!" he barked.
Two nurses unhooked the stoppers on the hospital bed and the group of them ran out with Olivia still unresponsive on the bed.
Gerry watched as they took her. His mind was blank and he couldn't think. He didn't know who to call first or even what to tell them. He didn't know what happened. He didn't hear her machine beeping or buzzing to tell him something was wrong. He walked out of the hospital room to find someone, anyone who could tell him what just happened. He needed to know before he even attempted to call Fitz or anyone else. The moment he stepped out of the hospital room he saw Fitz walking down the hall with Arianna. He was carrying two boxes of pizza while she was carrying a few small bags with what Olivia requested. He was joking with Arianna as they walked down the hall but once Gerry turned around and he saw the look on his face his grin quickly disappeared.
Fitz rushed down to Gerry who was standing right outside Olivia's hospital room. When he turned and took in the room, there was an empty space where Olivia's bed was.
"What happened?" he asked shakily.
He waited anxiously. Unable to think and barely able to breathe. Olivia had hemorrhaged internally and now she was in surgery with dr. Bee. He sat in the waiting area close to the nurses' station. Outside the doors lead to the side of the floor opposite their room. It had double doors they couldn't get through. That was where the ORs and other rooms were.
Maya was despondent and silently crying on and off. Catherine and Gerry were sitting on the other side of him. It took convincing but Arianna went to the NICU to be with Sienna. It had been hours since they took her. They waited and waited until suddenly Abby burst through the double doors that led to the operating room, crying hysterically. When she saw them she froze because she wasn't expecting them to be out of the room. She covered her mouth and tried to head into open elevators but Maya rushed to her and grabbed her hand.
"What happened?" she screamed but Abby just cried.
"WHAT HAPPENED!" Maya screamed.
The nurses from the station rushed over.
Fitz blinked away tears as he waited to hear what he was sure would destroy him. His eyes burned, his throat burned and suddenly his fingers began to tremble.
"No," he heard Catherine whisper beside him tearfully.
It was apparent why Abby was hysterical but he couldn't believe it until it was said. Catherine noticed his trembling hands and grabbed onto them. "It's gonna be okay. It'll be okay-" she said.
Maya grabbed Abby by the collar of her scrubs and shook her, "tell me."
"She didn't make it- I'm so sorry."
Maya fell to the floor and screamed out in agony.
Fitz couldn't hold back anymore a choke out a sob and Gerry's arms were immediately around him, holding him tight As he cried in anguish. Maya continued to wail on the floor. Catherine went over to her, pushing away the nurses so she could kneel beside Maya, and consoled her even though she was sobbing as well. Catherine held her and tried to lift her and she managed to get her upper body off the floor, moments later Maya passed out.
Suddenly hospital security was coming down the hall after becoming aware of the commotion.
Fitz felt like he couldn't breathe as it was slowly beginning to sink in. He stood from his seat and headed down the hall.
"Fitz," Catherine called out tearfully as the nurses tended to Maya in her arms. "Don't go."
Gerry headed after him, keeping a little distance to see where he was headed. He watched as Fitz walked into Olivia's empty hospital room and when he walked in behind him, Fitz was on his knees sobbing. Gerry felt anguish at seeing Fitz in that state and he kneeled beside him, trying to give him space to grief but all trying to comfort him.
They sat quietly as Gerry let him cry for Olivia. After a while, Gerry spoke. "I can't tell you it's gonna be okay. Losing her like this is rough." He choked up in his last words.
Fitz was quiet for a while before he spoke.
"She didn't deserve this- I did this- if I left her alone- she would still be alive."
"Don't-"
"Are you gonna tell me not to say it?" Fitz questioned. "It's the truth. You know it and her mother knows it which is why she passed out outside." Tears came again. "I told her to end it."
"Fitz," Gerry said quietly. "Stop this. Don't think like this."
Fitz shook his head. "I keep telling you guys I can't live without her and I think maybe you don't understand what I mean. I won't survive this- I'm telling you right now that I won't."
Gerry's mouth fell open but before he could respond Arianna burst into the room. "Fitz, come now. That little redhead bitch didn't know what the fuck she was talking about. Olivia isn't fucking dead she's still in surgery."
Fitz turned around, too stunned to move.
"Come!" Arianna yelled as she rushed away.
Fitz sprinted out with Gerry behind him. When he reached the waiting area Dr. Bee was there with two other doctors. Maya and Catherine were closest to the doctors but there was a scattered group of staff there seemingly waiting to hear the news as well.
"-I am so, so sorry. That never should have happened, I assure you she hasn't passed away." she said then she turned to a group of staff, "don't you guys have work to do? I'm sure Olivia appreciates your concern but since you are only here because of a rumor I would ask you to leave so I can speak with her family privately."
The group scattered and dr. Bee watched as Abby attempted to leave as well. She was despondent after her mistake.
"Not you dr. Whelan," she said with sharpness and anger in her voice. She turned back to the group.
"Say it again," Fitz said.
"Olivia is alive," dr. Bee said.
Tears came to his eyes. He heard sniffles all around him, Maya most audibly.
"Olivia went into cardiac arrest but we were able to bring her back quickly enough that in my experience the after-effects will be minimal."
"Where is she now?" Fitz asked.
"She is still in the OR. Her vitals have stabilized and she is currently getting her incision sutured. She's on a ventilator but we expect to take her off in about 24 hours or so. She just needs time to rest. Her body has been through a lot."
"When can I see her?"
"Soon, once we're finished she'll be moved to recovery. Shouldn't be more than an hour or two."
Catherine hugged Maya as she cried tears of joy.
"Is she out of the clear? We thought she was after the c-section and then this happened."
"We had to remove her uterus which was the source of the hemorrhaging. It was only a partial hysterectomy, her body will function pretty normally until she reaches her natural menopause but she can no longer get pregnant nor will she menstruate. The surgery was successful until a clot dislodged and traveled to her lung. That's what caused the cardiac arrest. We made a small incision in her chest and suctioned the clot and we were able to remove it. It will be a rough few days for her but she will fully recover in about a month. Once she's awake we can talk a little further about what to expect."
Fitz nodded, "one last thing," he said as he turned to Abby and suddenly he was seething with anger."Do you understand what you just did?"
"I'm so sorry- I - please forgive me I had no idea she was still alive- I'm sorry."
"How did you even come to the conclusion that she passed?" Dr. Bee asked.
"I heard about what happened and I knew she was with you in the OR. I just wanted to check on her so I stopped in the scrub room and through the glass, I saw her crash. You used the paddles and shocked her a few times and she was still flat. I heard dr. Rousseau ask you to call the time of death and I ran out. I didn't plan on telling anyone but when I went out you guys were there and you saw me crying- so you-I'm really sorry."
"Dr. Rousseau is a jackass which is why I kicked him out of my OR shortly after. If you'd stuck around for another second, her rhythm returned, none of this would have happened."
"I'm sorry, it was a mistake."
"Coming into an OR you aren't cleared to be in during a life-saving surgery to check on my patient because you heard gossip then going even further to discussing medical information you aren't cleared to discuss with patients that aren't yours? Let alone that information being false?" dr. Bee said incredulously. "You're done for today and once I'm finished looking after dr. Pope, you will meet me in the chief's office because I want you suspended."
Abby nodded, biting back sniffles.
"Get out of my sight," the doctor ordered.
"I truly am sorry," she said again before she walked away.
"Go!"
Fitz sat on the chair beside her bed waiting for her to wake. It had been two days since she was off the ventilator but she still hadn't woken. Dr. Bee brought in a neurologist who said she was semi-comatose and that she needed a few days to wake naturally. She was on day three and he was losing his mind. She was a constant barrage of nurses and doctors in and out of the room, checking her thoroughly seemingly every 20 minutes but he couldn't be annoyed by them caring for her more thoroughly than before.
Sienna was beginning to take a bottle. He fed her for the first time just last night and she did well enough through the night that they took her off the feeding tube in the morning. She was now cuddled against his chest as he held her gently giving her skin-to-skin contact. Though he was shirtless he had a blanket covering him so Sienna could be warm as she slept. She was beginning to do more and her eyes were now open. He was hoping they would be pretty chocolate brown like Olivia's but they were gray though the doctor believed they would eventually turn blue.
Morning turned to noon then to evening then night. Sienna was back in the Nicu with Catherine. Gerry and Arianna had gone home and Maya was in the hospital room with him but she had dozed off on the couch.
It was hard to sleep but eventually, he dozed off only to wake when he felt someone watching him. When he opened his eyes Olivia was staring at him. He jumped up, and suddenly his breath was shaky, "Livie?" he said, sounding as if he didn't believe his own eyes.
He stood and moved over to her quickly and caressed her cheek. "Livie?" He was crying now. He couldn't help it because there were no words to express how he felt.
"What happened?" she asked, crying now, confused by his reaction. Her voice was small and hoarse. She reached up to touch her throat but her hand was hooked to chords and monitors and Fitz held her hand to stop her.
"Did something happen to her? Is she okay?" she asked tearfully.
He wrapped his arms around her and held her, "she's perfect. She's gained a few ounces, she is drinking from the bottle now and she opened her eyes."
"So why are you crying?" she asked, sniffling as she calmed.
Fitz leaned up and smiled, "I just needed you to be okay and you are."
"Why what happened?"
"What do you last remember?"
"You were supposed to take a shower and bring my Margherita pizza and ice cream. Mom went to stay with Cece and I felt really tired so I went to sleep."
"Your uterus ruptured," he said, "and you were hemorrhaging, you had a clot and cardiac arrest, you were on a ventilator but you're back now."
"What? How long was I out?"
"Five days?"
"What?- is that why Cece is doing so much better- I've been out for 5 days. She's over a week old now?"
Fitz held her face and looked into it, "all that matters is that you're okay. You can't be her mother if you aren't okay."
Olivia took a light breath. "Okay."
"How do you feel?"
"I don't feel anything but my throat and it doesn't hurt, it's just uncomfortable."
He nodded and reached to press the nurse call button.
"No. Just one more minute before they come."
He nodded and then Olivia smiled. "You look terrible by the way," she said.
He laughed. "Yes well, thinking your fucking soul mate was dead will do that to you."
Olivia was confused, "why did you think I was dead?"
"It'll probably piss you off so we should visit that after the doctors look at you."
His smile faded as he pressed the nurse call button.
"How's my baby?" Olivia asked.
Fitz reached into his pocket and grabbed Olivia's phone. "Arianna has been having photoshoots."
"And that's why I love her," Olivia said. Just as he opened her phone to show her picture the medical team walked in.
"Dr. Pope, it's a great night it seems," dr. Bee said.
Olivia grinned, "Fitz was just showing me pictures of Sienna. He said she's drinking from a bottle now."
Dr. Bee nodded, "she's due to be discharged from the NICU any day now."
Olivia nodded and looked at Fitz excited to see the pictures. He pulled up the pictures and the first of him and Sienna when he first held her for skin-to-skin contact. Olivia's mouth fell open and her eyes filled with water. She melted inside. "I didn't think I could love you any more than I already did. She's so tiny and perfect." Olivia turned to dr. Fencer, "I need you guys to examine me now so I can see her."
Dr. Fencer smiled, "you've been doing really well. I think you'll be able to hold her today."
"Really? Oh my god. Hurry up and examine me. I have to see her now."
