The Wondrous World of Pokémon! A world filled with mysterious creatures known as Pokémon, who come in all shapes and sizes. They live everywhere imaginable. On the land, in the seas and skies, and some even come from outer space. These creatures can bond with humans thanks to the special capture devices known as Pokéballs. Those who use Pokémon for battle are known as Pokémon Trainers. Our heroes arrived in Pewter City, the site of Latrell and Silver's first Gym Battle. There, they met a young man named Mike, who is also a new trainer from Pallet Town, much like Latrell. Latrell challenged him to a battle, but Mike declined, saying he'd only battle Latrell if he managed to earn his first Gym Badge. Silver had a battle with Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City, and managed to beat him and earn his first Gym Badge. Now, it's Latrell's turn to battle Brock for his first Gym Badge. With his first step towards going to the Indigo League, and his potential battle with Mike depending on the outcome of this Gym Battle, how will Latrell perform?
Pewter City, Kanto Region
At the Pewter Gym, with Latrell, Brock, and the Referee standing in their respective spots on the field and Silver, Blue, and Fiore in the bleachers, and Nymble and Eevee sitting with the three.
Brock: Latrell, I've been looking forward to your challenge since yesterday.
Latrell: I've been itching to battle you too.
Brock: Bring me your best!
Referee: Same battle rules as yesterday. Do both trainers understand the rules? If so, send out your first Pokémon.
Brock: Yep.
Latrell: Got it! Charmander, I choose you! (Throws out his Pokéball to reveal Charmander)
Charmander: Char!
Latrell: (Turns to the bleachers) Nymble! Make sure to watch this battle! I promise you'll battle next time!
Nymble: (Jumps in excitement)
Brock: Alright. Rhyhorn, let's go! (Throws out his Pokéball to reveal Rhyhorn)
Rhyhorn: Ry! (Snorts at Charmander)
Blue: That's new, wonder what kind of Pokémon that is. (Pulls out the Pokédex on Rhyhorn)
Eevee: Ee?
Rotom Phone: Rhyhorn, the Spikes Pokémon. A Rock and Ground Type. Rhyhorn likes to claim an area with over a six mile radius as its territory. It apparently forgets where this territory is when running, however.
Blue: So this Pokémon gets lost a lot?
Eevee: Vee!
Fiore: (Chuckles) You should catch one, Silver.
Silver: (Deadpans Fiore) Hilarious.
Latrell: Rhyhorn?
Brock: You've seen how I battle with both of my other Pokémon, so I had to switch it up.
Latrell: Alright, let's show them what he got. Charmander, use Flamethrower!
Charmander: Char... Man! (Blasts a Flamethrower at Rhyhorn)
Brock: That Charmander knows a move like Flamethrower? Rhyhorn, use Horn Attack!
Rhyhorn: Horn! (Charges at Charmander with Horn Attack, which is just able to get through the Flamethrower and hit Charmander)
Latrell: Charmander!
Charmander: Char! (Flies from the impact of Horn Attack, then falls and hits the ground)
Brock: Do it again, Rhyhorn!
Rhyhorn: (Growls as he makes a U-Turn and hits Charmander again)
Latrell: Are you okay?
Charmander: Char! (Nods at Latrell)
Brock: Use Rock Throw!
Rhyhorn: (Roars as he shoots rocks at Charmander)
Latrell: Dodge it!
Charmander: Char! (Just barely manages to evade the Rock Throw)
Brock: Use Horn Attack again!
Rhyhorn: (Growls as he charges towards Charmander)
Latrell: Charmander, wait for my signal!
Charmander: Char... (Braces himself)
Fiore: What's he doing?
Silver: I'm not sure.
Eevee: Ee!
Latrell: Charmander, jump now!
Charmander: Char! (Jumps just as Rhyhorn was about to hit him)
Brock: Huh?!
Latrell: Charmander, land on Rhyhorn!
Charmander: Char... Man-Der! (Dives down and lands on Rhyhorn's back)
Brock: What?!
Rhyhorn: (Stumbles around as he tries to get Charmander off his back)
Latrell: Rhyhorn can't use Dig, right?
Brock: You're saying-
Latrell: (Turns his head to the bleachers) Thanks for giving me this idea, Silver! I owe you one!
Silver: Just win this Gym Battle and buy me some fried chicken, then we're even!
Latrell: Charmander, stay on Rhyhorn and blast him with Flamethrower!
Charmander: (Blasts Rhyhorn's head with Flamethrower as Rhyhorn runs around trying to get Charmander off him)
Referee: Latrell found a way to attack and keep Rhyhorn's attacks from hitting him, not bad.
Blue: Go Latrell!
Fiore: Yeah! Kick his butt!
Eevee: Vee! Ee-Vee! (Jumps up)
Nymble: Nim! (Jumps cheerfully)
Latrell: Charmander, one more time, Flamethrower, finish this!
Charmander: Char...
Brock: Rhyhorn, run into a rock with Horn Attack!
Latrell: What?!
Rhyhorn: (Roars as he charges into a rock with Horn Attack, which breaks the rock, and the broken pieces fly and hit Charmander, knocking him off Rhyhorn's back)
Latrell: Charmander, no!
Brock: Now finish him with Rock Throw!
Latrell: Charmander, use Flamethrower!
Rhyhorn: (Attempts to use Rock Throw, but is stopped as his body suddenly becomes enveloped in flames)
Blue: What was that?
Referee: Rhyhorn got burned!
Charmander: Char... Man-Der! (Blasts Rhyhorn with another Flamethrower, which made Rhyhorn stumble over and hit the ground)
Referee: Rhyhorn is unable to battle. The winner is Charmander!
Latrell: Yes! We did it, Charmander!
Charmander: Char!
Brock: (Returns Rhyhorn to his Pokéball) I've gotta commend you, Latrell. That strategy you used in order to attack Rhyhorn was great. And that Burn at the end made all the difference.
Latrell: (Chuckles as a sweat drop drips down his face) To be honest, I didn't actually expect for Rhyhorn to get burned.
Fiore: (Deadpans) Are you serious?!
Blue: (Deadpans) You're telling me that was unintentional?
Silver: (Deadpans) The luck this guy has on his side, I swear.
Eevee: (Deadpans) Vee...
Referee: Brock, send out your next Pokémon.
Brock: Got it. Onix, let's go! (Throws out his Pokéball to reveal Onix)
Onix: (Roars)
Latrell: Charmander, use Ember!
Brock: Onix, use Rock Throw!
Charmander: (Blasts Ember at Onix)
Onix: (Uses Rock Throw at Charmander, and it clashes with Ember but beats it out)
Latrell: Dodge it!
Charmander: Char! (Just barely dodges the Rock Throw)
Brock: Onix, use Slam!
Onix: (Roars as he swings his tail at Charmander with Slam)
Latrell: Flamethrower, now!
Charmander: (Blasts Flamethrower at Onix, but it's dispersed by Onix's Slam, which hits Charmander)
Latrell: No! Charmander!
Charmander: Char... (Falls unconscious as the dust settles)
Referee: Charmander is unable to battle. The winner is Onix!
Latrell: Charmander, you were great. Thanks a lot, now return. (Returns Charmander to his Pokéball)
Brock: Your Charmander is definitely a strong Pokémon, but not strong enough. Now, let's see your last Pokémon.
Latrell: Grookey, I choose you! (Throws out his Pokéball to reveal Grookey)
Grookey: Groo-Key-Groo! (Cheerfully does a backflip)
Latrell: Grookey, I'm counting on you.
Grookey: Groo!
Brock: Onix, use Rock Throw!
Latrell: Use Razor Leaf!
Onix: (Roars as he aims Rock Throw at Grookey)
Grookey: Groo... Key! (Launches Razor Leaf at Onix's Rock Throw, and the two attacks cancel each other out)
Brock: Onix, now use Slam!
Onix: (Growls as he swings his tail at Grookey, attempting to use Slam)
Latrell: Grookey, dodge and jump on Onix's tail!
Grookey: Key! (Does a flip over the Slam and lands on Onix's tail)
Blue: Is he really trying to go for the same strategy Silver used?
Eevee: Vee?
Fiore: (Deadpans) I'm kinda surprised he didn't come up with something original.
Silver: Do you think Brock's gonna fall for the same trick twice?
Referee: Doubtful.
Latrell: Grookey, climb!
Grookey: Key-Groo! (Starts climbing up Onix's tail to get to his head)
Brock: We won't let that happen. Use Dig, Onix!
Onix: (Roars as he uses Dig and takes Grookey underground with him)
Latrell: Grookey, just stay calm and follow through with the plan!
Referee: Does he expect that to work?
Brock: That won't help you. Onix, now!
Onix: (Jumps out of the ground and sends Grookey flying off of his back)
Grookey: Key! (Manages to land safely on the ground)
Brock: Use Slam!
Onix: (Roars as he attempts Slam, but stops partway through in pain, and looks at his tail to see it beaten badly)
Brock: Onix, what happened?!
Latrell: Grookey, nice job!
Grookey: Groo-Key-Key! (Happily waves his stick in the air and jumps)
Brock: Onix, try Slam again!
Onix: (Roars as he tries to use Slam on Grookey again)
Latrell: Deflect it with Branch Poke!
Grookey: (Swings his stick at Onix's tail with Branch Poke, sending the oncoming Slam away from him)
Onix: (Roars in pain from the Branch Poke)
Brock: Onix? What happened?
Latrell: Well, when Onix was using Dig...
Flashback to a minute ago when Onix was using Dig, but from Grookey's perspective while underground
Latrell (Muffled since he's above ground): Grookey, just stay calm and follow through with the plan!
Grookey: (Climbs down to Onix's tail and starts repeatedly bashing it with Branch Poke)
Brock (Muffled for the same reason): That won't help you. Onix, now!
Latrell (Narration): I had a plan for Onix if he used Dig, I had Grookey weaken his tail, so Slam would be easier to counter.
Brock: Wow, I didn't expect that. Onix, use Dig!
Onix: (Roars as he retreats underground with Dig)
Latrell: Grookey, stay on your guard!
Grookey: Groo... (Darts his eyes around the battlefield)
Brock: Onix! Go!
Onix: (Roars as he emerges from the ground, directly hitting Grookey)
Grookey: Groo! (Gets sent flying straight up in the air from the attack)
Latrell: Grookey, hang on!
Brock: Onix, use Slam!
Latrell: Branch Poke, go!
Onix: (Growls and swings at Grookey with Slam)
Grookey: Key! (Hits Onix's tail with Branch Poke, and the two attacks cancel each other out)
Brock: Onix, use Rock Throw!
Onix: (Roars and uses Rock Throw at Grookey)
Latrell: Grookey, counter it with Razor Leaf!
Grookey: Key! (Launches Razor Leaf at Onix, and once again, both of the attacks cancel out)
Brock: Once more, Onix!
Onix: (Roars as he launches more rocks at Grookey)
Latrell: Hop on the rocks and close the gap!
Grookey: Groo-Key-Key-Groo! (Jumps from rock to rock then proceeds to jump right above Onix's head)
Latrell: Finish it, send him to the ground with Branch Poke!
Grookey: Groo... Key! (Hits Onix over the head with Branch Poke, sending Onix to the ground)
Onix: (Roars in pain as he falls and hits the ground)
Brock: Onix!
Grookey: (Starts falling to the ground and lands in the dust cloud created from Onix's fall)
Fiore: Did he do it? Is Onix down?
Silver: We'll see.
Blue: C'mon...
Onix: (Groans and falls unconscious as the dust settles, with Grookey dancing on top of Onix's head)
Referee: Onix is unable to battle! Grookey wins, making the winner of this battle Latrell from Pallet Town!
Blue: Awesome! He did it!
Silver: Nice going!
Nymble: Nym! (Cheerfully jumps in the air)
Eevee: Vee! Ee-Vee! (Jumps up alongside Nymble)
Fiore: (Sips on an apple juice box) Good job, Latrell and Grookey!
Blue: Where'd you get the apple juice?
Fiore: Don't question it.
Outside the Pewter Gym with everyone
Brock: Latrell, you battled great today. I'm happy to present you with the Boulder Badge. (Hands a Boulder Badge to Latrell)
Latrell: Thanks, I'm really glad we got to battle, you're great.
Brock: Thanks. Good luck on the rest of your journey.
Latrell: Of course!
Blue: Next stop, Basalt City, where I'll be able to take part in my first Contest!
Brock: Basalt City?
Blue: Yeah, you know about the Contests?
Brock: Well-
(Suddenly, a woman's loud scream and glass breaking can be heard)
Brock: What was that?!
Silver: Let's check it out.
(Everyone except the Referee runs in the direction of the Pokémon Center, where the sound came from)
With the group and Brock at the Pokémon Center
Latrell: What's going on?!
Nurse Joy: Help, they stole all the Pokémon I was caring for!
Silver: Who?
Nurse Joy: There! (Points to a black jeep with dark purple letters saying 'PP' painted on the side driving off)
(The passenger seat window opens up and Giselle's head pops out)
Giselle: Just try and stop us!
Greg: (Sticks his head out the window) Yeah! We're unstoppable!
Fiore: We did a pretty good job of kicking your butts 3 days ago!
(The car comes to a sudden halt, and Yosef and Giselle step out of the car with Greg perched on Giselle's head)
Yosef: You're those kids from the forest!
Giselle: The ones with the Charmander and Grookey.
Greg: You humiliated us, now it's time for payback!
Silver: I've been wanting to battle you guys since Latrell and Fiore told us about how they mopped the floor with you.
Blue: Same here, let's go!
Fiore: Seeing their faces ruined my day, so I'll help you all out.
Yosef: Rattata, show them who's boss!
Giselle: Zubat, you too! Teach those punks a lesson!
Silver: Treecko, let's go!
Blue: Eevee, you're up!
Fiore: Piplup, c'mon!
(The five trainers throw their Pokéballs, aside from Blue, because Eevee just jumped out of her hands and next to Treecko and Piplup)
Yosef: Wow, more rare Pokémon.
Giselle: Perfect.
Silver: Treecko, use Bullet Seed!
Fiore: Piplup, Bubble Beam!
Blue: Eevee, Swift!
(The three Pokémon launch their respective attacks at Zubat and Rattata and land a direct hit)
Yosef: Rattata, show them with Quick Attack!
Silver: Treecko, you use Quick Attack!
Treecko: Tree! (Launches at Rattata with Quick Attack)
Rattata: (Makes a squeaky noice as he clashes Treecko's Quick Attack with his own)
Giselle: Zubat, use Supersonic on the Piplup and Eevee!
Zubat: (Uses Supersonic on Piplup and Eevee, which makes them stumble around and bump into each other)
Treecko: Co! (Manages to overpower Rattata and knock him back)
Silver: Nice going!
Greg: Don't get cocky, kid! (Flies over to Treecko and captures him in a net)
Silver: Are you serious?!
Nurse Joy: What do we do?
Latrell: If we attack Chatot, we risk hurting Treecko.
Brock: Wait, do any of you have an Electric Pokémon?
Blue: I have a Pikachu, why?
Brock: Have Pikachu use Thunder Shock on Chatot. Treecko is a Grass Type, so Electric Type Moves won't do much damage to him.
Greg: My name's Greg, you tall buffoon!
Blue: Got it! Pikachu, you're up! (Throws her Pokéball to reveal Pikachu)
Pikachu: Pika-Pi!
Blue: Use Thunder Shock!
Pikachu: Pika, Pika, Pika... Chu-Pi! (Blasts Thunder Shock at Chatot, which leaves him paralyzed and badly damaged)
Latrell: Nymble, use your legs and get Treecko back here! (Throws his Pokéball to reveal Nymble)
Nymble: Nym! (Hops over to the net Treecko is in and kicks it towards the group with Double Kick)
Silver: Gotcha! (Catches the net Treecko was in and breaks it open)
Treecko: Tree!
Blue: Pikachu, finish them off with Thunder Shock!
Pikachu: Chu-Pi! (Uses Thunder Shock, but it turns into Thunderbolt, which sends the Poké-Pilferers blasting off)
Yosef: Dang it! Foiled again!
Giselle: Those brats will pay! When I get my hands on their Pokémon, I swear...
Greg: I feel extra crispy...
The Trio: We'll be back soon! (They then fly so far away that they become a little twinkle in the sky)
Back at the Pokémon Center with everyone after they gathered all of the Pokémon that were stolen
Nurse Joy: (Hands the group a tray with their Pokéballs) All your Pokémon are back in perfect condition. Thanks again for all your help.
Latrell: Of course.
Blue: Happy to help!
Brock: (Gets hearts in his eyes) Now, would you please help me, Nurse Joy? For I have a desperate need to take your beauty in my longing arms-
Fiore: (Grabs Brock by his vest and starts dragging him away from Nurse Joy) That's quite enough out of you, creep.
Silver: Well... that happened...
Blue: So, we're headed out tomorrow for the Basalt City Contest?
Latrell: Of course.
Fiore: (Walks back to the group) Oh right, I almost forgot.
Nurse Joy: You said the Basalt City Contest?
Blue: Yep, that's going to be my Pokémon Coordinator Debut!
Brock: (Walks back to the group) Well, the Contest won't take place for about 9 days, so you'll definitely be able to make it on time. You just have to get through Mt. Moon, but I think you all should be fine.
Silver: (Deadpans) You got back here quick.
Blue: Are you into Contests, Brock?
Brock: Not just the Contests, but all the pretty girls who compete in them! So many gorgeous ladies all in one place!
Fiore: (Deadpans) Figured as much.
Latrell: So, the Contest is in 9 days? That's definitely enough time for us to make it there.
Silver: Sweet. So, we're headed out tomorrow.
Blue: To my first Contest! And I'm gonna win!
Silver: Off topic, but did anyone else notice that their car said "PP" on the side?
(Everyone starts laughing)
And with that, Latrell and Silver have both beaten Brock and earned their first Gym Badge. Now, our group's next destination is Basalt City, where Blue's first Contest will take place.
