Chapter Four : Looking for a Slug
When the trio reached the office and opened the door they realized Hiruzen was waiting for them, his expression serious. "Naruto, Shisui, Jiraiya… thank you for coming."
Naruto stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest. "You wanted to see me, old man?"
Hiruzen nodded, his gaze softening as he looked at Naruto. "Yes, Naruto. There are important matters we need to discuss—about your training, your future, and the changes you've been experiencing. We found a solution and Jiraiya here needs your help.."
The suddenly atmosphere in the Hokage's office was thick with tension, a stark contrast to the usual warmth and kindness Naruto associated with the old man. Hiruzen's serious demeanor was something Naruto wasn't used to, and it made him uneasy. The way the Third Hokage's eyes studied him, heavy with unspoken worries, only added to the weight in the room. Naruto's heart pounded in his chest, his hands gripping the books Mito had given him as if they were a lifeline.
Hiruzen finally broke the silence, his voice steady but laced with a gravity that made Naruto's nerves spike. "Naruto, Jiraiya here has requested your help with a mission. It's not a typical mission, and it comes with certain conditions."
Naruto's eyes widened, the tension in the room momentarily forgotten. "A mission? For me? What kind of mission?"
Jiraiya stepped forward, his usual jovial expression tempered with a hint of seriousness. "It's a mission that requires us to convince someone to come home that can help with your unique situation, Naruto. But more importantly, I've offered to train you as payment for your help. You won't get official credit since you're not a registered genin yet, but that doesn't mean it's not important."
At the mention of training, Naruto's eyes lit up like fireworks, the excitement surging through him like a jolt of electricity. "Training? With you? Really? This is gonna be awesome!"
For a brief moment, the heaviness in the room lifted as Naruto's enthusiasm filled the space. Hiruzen allowed a small smile, though his gaze remained cautious. He then turned his attention to Shisui, the weight of the decision clear in his eyes. "Of course, Shisui, the final decision is up to you. You're his legal guardian now, after all."
Shisui, who had been watching the exchange with a thoughtful expression, smiled warmly. He glanced at Naruto, who was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet with excitement, and gave him a wink. "Go have fun, Naruto. I'll keep everything together here while you're gone. Besides, you've been working hard—this could be a great opportunity for you."
Naruto's excitement was palpable as he launched himself at Shisui, wrapping him in a tight hug. "Thank you, Shisui! You're the best!"
Shisui chuckled, ruffling Naruto's hair before pulling back. But what happened next caught everyone by surprise, especially Naruto. Shisui reached into his pocket and pulled out his own headband, the metal plate gleaming in the soft light of the office. He held it out to Naruto, a proud smile on his face. "Here, take this. While you're out of the village with Lord Jiraiya, consider yourself a ninja. This headband will remind you of that."
Naruto stared at the headband, his eyes wide with disbelief. His hands trembled as he reached out to take it, the significance of the gesture sinking in. The moment the metal touched his skin, tears welled up in his eyes. This wasn't just a piece of cloth and metal—this was a symbol of everything he had dreamed of becoming. And now, for the first time, he felt like he was truly on his way.
"Thank you, Shisui," Naruto choked out, tears streaming down his cheeks. He wiped them away quickly, trying to maintain his usual bravado, but the emotion was too strong. "I won't let you down. I promise."
Shisui's smile softened, and he placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "I know you won't, Naruto. Just remember to stay true to yourself, no matter what happens out there."
Naruto nodded fiercely, his grip tightening on the headband. He felt a surge of determination, the fire inside him burning brighter than ever. With Shisui's blessing and Jiraiya's training, he knew he could face anything.
"Let's get you packed then," Shisui said, guiding Naruto toward the door. "We'll put together a proper shinobi bag, and then you can get started on this new adventure."
As they left the Hokage's office, Naruto couldn't help but glance back at Hiruzen. The old man's serious expression had softened, a hint of pride in his eyes as he watched them go. Naruto didn't fully understand the weight of the mission or the worries that still hung over the Hokage's head, but he knew one thing for sure—he was ready to face whatever came next.
And with that thought, Naruto walked out of the office, the headband tied proudly around his forehead, ready to begin the next chapter of his journey.
⁂
Uchiha Compound
As Naruto and Shisui walked through the village towards their home, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the streets of Konoha. The air was cool and crisp, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the trees overhead. Naruto, still clutching the headband Shisui had given him, walked with a spring in his step, his mind racing with excitement about the upcoming mission.
Shisui glanced down at Naruto, a fond smile playing on his lips. "Naruto..." he began, his tone becoming slightly more serious, "Being a shinobi isn't just about strength or fighting. It's about understanding the situation, staying calm, cool, and collected, even when things seem dire. You need to analyze everything around you—your environment, your opponents, and yourself."
Naruto nodded, listening intently, though his eyes were still bright with enthusiasm. "Got it, Shisui! Stay calm and think things through."
"Exactly," Shisui said, his smile widening. "And remember, Jiraiya is a powerful and wise shinobi. He might not always look it, but he has more experience than most people in the village combined. Make sure to listen to his instructions and learn from him. But…"
Shisui paused, scratching the back of his head, his expression turning slightly awkward as he thought of Jiraiya's infamous womanizing tendencies. He looked at Naruto and quickly added, "Just don't follow all of his advice, okay?"
Naruto looked up at Shisui, confused. "What do you mean, Shisui?"
Shisui chuckled, trying to find the right words. "Let's just say Jiraiya has… other interests that you shouldn't pick up. Focus on the training and the mission, not on his, uh, extracurricular activities."
Naruto blinked a few times, still confused, but the serious expression on Shisui's face was so out of character that he couldn't help but burst into laughter. "Okay, Shisui! I'll make sure to stick to the mission stuff!"
Shisui laughed along with him, the tension from earlier dissipating as they continued their walk. The two of them had always shared a close bond, and moments like this only made it stronger.
As they entered the Uchiha compound, the atmosphere grew quieter, the bustling noise of the village fading into the background. The compound was peaceful, with a sense of order and discipline that came from generations of shinobi living within its walls. The sight of the Uchiha crest on the buildings and the occasional clan member passing by gave Naruto a sense of belonging, something he had longed for his whole life.
As they made their way through the compound, they spotted a familiar figure approaching them. Itachi Uchiha, Shisui's close friend and cousin, walked towards them with his usual calm and composed demeanor. His sharp eyes softened as he saw Shisui and Naruto together.
"Hey Itachi!" Naruto called out, waving energetically despite the long day. "Guess what! I'm going on a mission with the Toad guy Jiraiya!"
Itachi raised an eyebrow slightly, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Is that so? At such a young age to? That's quite an honor, Naruto. I'm sure you'll do well."
Naruto puffed out his chest with pride, beaming up at the older Uchiha. "Yeah! Shisui says it's a great opportunity, and I'm going to learn a lot!"
Shisui placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder, nodding at Itachi. "He's got a lot of potential, Itachi. This could be exactly what he needs to take the next step."
Itachi's eyes flickered with a hint of warmth as he looked at Naruto, who was still buzzing with excitement. "Just remember, Naruto, that the path of a shinobi is not an easy one. There will be challenges and hardships, but I believe you have the strength to overcome them."
Naruto nodded eagerly, soaking in the words of encouragement from someone he admired. "I won't let you down, Itachi! I promise!"
Itachi's smile grew just a bit wider as he placed a hand on Naruto's head, ruffling his hair gently. "I know you won't."
Shisui watched the interaction with a sense of pride, seeing how Naruto had grown in the three years since he had taken him in. The boy who had once been full of mischief and loneliness was now on his way to becoming a true shinobi, surrounded by people who cared for him.
As they stood there, the three of them—two experienced shinobi and one eager young ninja—there was a sense of unity, of bonds forged through shared experiences and trust. The future was uncertain, filled with dangers and trials, but in that moment, there was hope. Naruto was no longer alone; he had found his place, his family, and the strength to face whatever lay ahead.
As Naruto smiled to himself, he was oblivious to the sudden tension between his older brother figures. Itachi and Shisui shared a brief, an intense glance. Their eyes locked, and in an instant, the world around them shifted. The bustling Uchiha compound faded away, replaced by the eerie stillness of the Genjutsu world they had created. The air was heavy with the unspoken weight of their conversation.
Shisui's heart pounded in his chest, the implications of what they were about to discuss already sending a chill down his spine. He didn't waste time with pleasantries.
"What's happened?" he asked, his voice low and urgent, cutting straight to the point.
Itachi's face was somber, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a grim expression. He hesitated for only a fraction of a second before answering, his tone laden with a weight Shisui had rarely heard from his friend.
"...They're making their move soon. They've deemed themselves capable of taking on the village."
Shisui's brows furrowed in confusion. "How are they doing that? They postponed it because of a lack of capable shinobi and resources. How could they possibly get everything together in only three years?"
Itachi looked away for a moment, as if the very thought of what he was about to say caused him physical pain. When he met Shisui's eyes again, there was a flicker of something that Shisui could only describe as helplessness—a rare emotion for Itachi.
"Danzo is helping them. He's given them money from the village, and provided them with a couple of Root ANBU. Resources and shinobi aren't an issue anymore."
Shisui's eyes widened, shock evident on his face. "Why is he helping them? He was the one who suggested a massacre when they were planning this years ago."
Itachi shook his head slightly, his expression troubled. "I haven't the slightest clue. At first, I thought this was his way of trying to get the massacre to happen. By helping them plan, he could easily push us into slaughtering them. But I had Tenzo look into it, and he says the Root assigned to help are legit. There's literally no reason for this."
Shisui inhaled deeply, trying to process the sudden influx of disturbing information. His thoughts raced, trying to find a solution, a way to prevent the disaster that seemed to be barreling toward them. The Uchiha planning another coup wasn't entirely unexpected, but Danzo's involvement was a game-changer, and not in a good way.
"Well, we need to speak with the Hokage as soon as possible," Shisui said, determination hardening in his voice. "Preferably with the Elders and Danzo there. We need to figure out exactly what they plan to do and how to stop it."
Itachi's expression grew even more somber, his eyes filled with a deep, sorrowful understanding. He stepped closer to Shisui, placing a hand on his shoulder, as if grounding himself for what he was about to reveal.
"There's no need," Itachi said quietly, his voice tinged with sadness. "I already know."
Shisui's breath hitched slightly, his heart pounding as dread settled in the pit of his stomach. He had known Itachi for years, had fought alongside him, trusted him like a brother. The look in Itachi's eyes told him that whatever he was about to say would be devastating.
"The Uchiha are going to release and control the Nine Tails… They're going to use Naruto."
For a moment, Shisui felt the world tilt on its axis, his mind struggling to comprehend the enormity of what Itachi had just said. The very idea of using Naruto—his little brother, his responsibility, the child he had sworn to protect—was unthinkable. The Uchiha's desperation had reached a point where they were willing to endanger not just Konoha, but the entire world.
"They can't... They wouldn't…" Shisui muttered, more to himself than to Itachi, his voice filled with disbelief. But he knew better. He knew the lengths to which his clan might go in their pursuit of power, in their belief that they were doing what was best for the Uchiha. But this—this was a step too far.
"We have to stop them," Shisui said, his voice low and resolute. "We can't let this happen. We have to protect Naruto."
Itachi nodded, his grip on Shisui's shoulder tightening slightly, as if to convey his own resolve. "I know. But this is bigger than just the two of us, Shisui. We need to tread carefully. If we move too quickly, we risk pushing the Uchiha into making their move even sooner. And if Danzo is truly behind this…"
Shisui clenched his fists, anger and frustration simmering just below the surface. "Then we might already be out of time."
Itachi's eyes softened with empathy, knowing how much Shisui cared for Naruto. "We'll find a way, Shisui. Together. We can't let Naruto get caught in the crossfire of this conflict. We won't."
The resolve in Itachi's voice was mirrored in Shisui's eyes as the two of them steeled themselves for the challenges ahead. They knew that the road would be fraught with danger and impossible choices, but they also knew that they couldn't allow the village—or Naruto—to be sacrificed for the ambitions of a few.
As the Genjutsu world around them began to dissolve, bringing them back to reality, Shisui took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions raging inside him. When they returned to the real world, Naruto was still blissfully unaware, chatting away about the mission with Jiraiya.
Shisui looked at Naruto with a mix of affection and worry, knowing that the boy's innocence would soon be shattered by the harsh realities of the shinobi world. But until then, he would do everything in his power to protect him, even if it meant going against his own clan.
With one final glance at Itachi, Shisui nodded. They had a plan, and they would see it through—no matter the cost.
"Let's get home, Naruto," Shisui said, his voice steady as he placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. "We have a lot to prepare for."
Naruto beamed up at him, still oblivious to the gravity of the situation, and the three of them continued on their way. But even as they walked, Shisui's mind was already racing ahead, planning, strategizing, and most of all, hoping that they would be able to avert the catastrophe that loomed on the horizon.
Next Day
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the winding path that led to Tanzaku Village. Naruto and Jiraiya walked side by side, with Naruto sporting Shisui's headband, a brown backpack slung over his shoulder, and wearing the black Uchiha clothes that had become his usual attire.
Despite the excitement of being on a mission and traveling with the legendary Sannin, Naruto's focus was entirely on the book in his hands—the one given to him by the mysterious red-haired woman at the ramen stand. While reading a passage, something in his heart swelled up in rage.
Long ago, the Uzumaki clan's power and influence were seen as a threat by the other ninja nations. They coveted the Uzumaki's unique abilities in fuinjutsu, which could potentially tip the balance of power. The Hidden Eddy Village was nestled in a remote and fortified location, a series of islands surrounded by treacherous seas, making it difficult for outsiders to attack. Still, their enemies were relentless.
It was a moonless night when the coalition of rival villages, led by the cunning Raikage of Lightning Country, launched their assault on the Uzumaki clan. The attackers outnumbered the Uzumaki forces, and the battle was fierce from the very beginning. The sky was ablaze with jutsu, and the sea raged as waves clashed against the rocky shores.
A lone Uzumaki warrior, however, was determined not to go down without a fight. He used his unique sealing techniques to create powerful barriers and traps, holding off wave after wave of attackers single handily. The spiraling crimson energy of their fuinjutsu created a barrier around their village that seemed impenetrable.
As the night wore on, the Uzumaki clan fought valiantly. Every member, young and old, stood together to defend their home. All the clan's strongest warriors, unleashed his formidable power, creating a massive sealing technique that repelled the enemy forces with overwhelming force. Their crimson hair flowed like a fiery tempest, and eyes blazed with determination.
Despite the relentless onslaught, the other nations realized that the Uzumaki clan's strength and resolve were unyielding. The losses they suffered were staggering, and the blood-soaked battlefield was a testament to the clan's bravery. Reluctantly, the enemy forces retreated, realizing that the cost of wiping out the Uzumaki clan would be too great.
The Uzumaki clan had won a hard-fought victory, but it came at a great price. Their numbers had been significantly reduced, and their once-thriving village was left scarred and battered. The fall of the Uzumaki clan was a somber reminder of the harsh realities of the ninja world, where power and survival often came at a steep cost.
In the end, the Uzumaki clan's legacy lived on in the few survivors who remained, and their mastery of fuinjutsu continued to be a symbol of their indomitable spirit and resilience.
Jiraiya glanced over at the boy, his large eyes locked onto the pages of the book, completely engrossed; he couldn't even tell what it was due to the book cover. The Toad Sage sighed, realizing that Naruto was paying him little attention. Jiraiya tried several times to strike up a conversation, asking about what Naruto thought of the journey so far or what he hoped to achieve by training under him, but his questions were met with half-hearted nods and vague hums.
Finally, Jiraiya stopped in his tracks, putting his hands on his hips and staring down at Naruto with a bemused expression. "Listen, brat!" he called out, his voice booming and causing several birds to take flight from the trees. "Your training starts now!"
Naruto's eyes snapped up from the book, widening in surprise as he realized what Jiraiya had just said. The book quickly forgotten, he began bouncing up and down in excitement, his energy and enthusiasm bubbling over. "Really? We're starting now? Yes! What are we going to do? What jutsu are you going to teach me, Ero-Sennin?"
Jiraiya's eye twitched at the nickname but he ignored it for the moment, instead focusing on trying to calm the boy down. "Shut up, loudmouth!" he shouted comically, rubbing his temples as if to ward off an impending headache. When Naruto finally stopped bouncing, Jiraiya let out a sigh of relief and continued. "So, tell me, kid. Have you unlocked your chakra yet? Done any basic training?"
Naruto nodded eagerly, his face lighting up with pride. "Yeah! Big brother Shisui taught me how to climb trees and walk on water already!"
Jiraiya's eyes widened in genuine surprise. Shisui had clearly been putting in a lot of work with the boy. Chakra control exercises like tree climbing and water walking were typically taught to genin during their early training, but the fact that Naruto had already mastered them at such a young age was impressive.
"Well, well," Jiraiya muttered, scratching his chin thoughtfully. "I've got to say, I'm impressed. You're ahead of where most kids your age would be. That'll make this next step a bit easier."
Naruto's face was a mixture of curiosity and excitement as he watched Jiraiya reach into his pack and pull out a small water balloon. Jiraiya held it up between his fingers, his expression suddenly serious.
"Alright, brat," Jiraiya began, holding the balloon up to Naruto's eye level. "What I'm about to teach you is one of the most powerful jutsu out there. It's called the Rasengan. Your fa—" He paused for a moment, realizing he was about to reveal something sensitive, but he quickly corrected himself. "—a very skilled ninja created this technique. It's all about chakra control, and it comes in three steps. The first step is to pop this balloon using only your chakra."
Naruto blinked, staring at the water balloon with a mixture of awe and confusion. "Pop it… with just chakra? How am I supposed to do that?"
Jiraiya smirked. "It's all about rotation. You've got to get the water inside the balloon to move around using your chakra. Once it's spinning fast enough, the balloon will pop."
Naruto's eyes narrowed in determination as he reached out to take the balloon from Jiraiya. He held it carefully, concentrating on the task ahead. "Alright, I've got this! I can do this, believe it!"
As Naruto focused on the balloon, Jiraiya watched him closely, his thoughts drifting momentarily. Despite Naruto's playful and somewhat goofy demeanor, there was something special about the kid—something that reminded Jiraiya of his old students, of Minato in particular.
The resemblance was uncanny, but it was more than that. It was the raw potential, the unyielding determination that shone through in everything Naruto did. If the boy could master the Rasengan, he would be one step closer to becoming the ninja that Jiraiya knew he was destined to be.
"Remember," Jiraiya said, his tone becoming more instructional. "Don't force it. Let your chakra flow naturally. Focus on creating rotation—just like how water spins in a whirlpool. It's all about control."
Naruto nodded, his tongue sticking out slightly in concentration as he tried to make the water inside the balloon spin. He could feel the chakra in his hands, but controlling it in such a precise manner was a lot harder than it sounded. He furrowed his brow, trying again and again, with Jiraiya watching closely.
As they continued their walk towards Tanzaku Gai, Jiraiya kept a watchful eye on Naruto's progress, occasionally offering tips and encouragement. The journey ahead would be long, both in distance and in the challenges that Naruto would face. But with each step, with each failed attempt and small victory, Naruto was inching closer to mastering the Rasengan—a technique that would shape his future as a shinobi.
Jiraiya glanced down at Naruto again, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "You've got the determination, kid. Just keep at it. Who knows? You might even surprise me."
Naruto grinned, his eyes shining with excitement and determination, but as time passed, frustration began to creep in. The balloon in his hand stubbornly resisted his attempts to control the chakra within it. Jiraiya watched with a smug smile, clearly amused by Naruto's struggles.
Naruto's eyebrows twitched in annoyance, finally snapping when he noticed Jiraiya's smug expression. "Hey! You see me struggling—why not help me, you perverted Toad!?"
Jiraiya chuckled in response, his voice filled with a mix of pride and amusement. "Alright, brat. Watch closely." He held out his other hand, and in an instant, a rapidly spinning blue ball of chakra formed. The Rasengan hummed with power, its energy contained perfectly within a compact sphere. Naruto stared in awe at the speed and precision of the technique, his eyes fixed on the swirling chakra.
"In battle, the Rasengan can be a very dangerous weapon," Jiraiya said, his voice turning serious. "It's one of the most notorious and powerful jutsu out there, and mastering it is no small feat." He slammed it into a tree but instead of piercing it, exploded from the inside.
Naruto nodded, his wide eyes still glued to the Rasengan. "Whoa…"
With a smug grin, Jiraiya allowed the jutsu to fade away, the blue sphere dissipating into thin air. "Indeed. Don't beat yourself up if you can't do it right away. Now let's—"
BLAM!
Jiraiya was abruptly cut off by the sound of water splashing. He turned to see Naruto shaking his hand, pieces of rubber scattering around him. The balloon had burst, and Naruto was left standing there with a proud smile on his face.
Jiraiya's eyes widened in disbelief. "What? How?"
Naruto shrugged and casually shook more water off his hands as he continued walking forward, clearly pleased with himself. "Well, I saw that the chakra in your Rasengan was flowing in all directions, so I just did that to the balloon and… pop."
Jiraiya blinked, momentarily speechless. "A kid like you shouldn't have gotten something like that so quickly. You're really something else, Naruto."
As they walked, a myriad of thoughts swirled in Jiraiya's mind. Naruto had an extraordinary talent for chakra control, something Jiraiya had rarely seen in someone so young. The ease with which he had grasped the concept of the Rasengan, even in its simplest form, was nothing short of remarkable. Could this boy truly be the child of prophecy? The one who would bring about a great change in the world?
Jiraiya's musings were interrupted by Naruto's eager voice. "What's the next step?"
Shaken out of his thoughts, Jiraiya dumbly held out a rubber ball. "Pop this with your chakra. This step should be the most difficult—it's all about power."
Before Jiraiya could finish his explanation, Naruto took the rubber ball from him and, without missing a beat, began to channel his chakra into it. The ball started to swell rapidly as Naruto overloaded it with chakra.
BLAM!
The ball exploded with a deafening pop, sending rubber shrapnel flying everywhere. Naruto immediately clapped his hands over his ears, wincing at the loud noise. "Damn it, why was that so loud?"
Jiraiya, who had been standing nearby, nearly had a heart attack. "How did you get it that time? Generating a consistent amount of power like that takes time!"
Naruto looked at the remains of the rubber ball with a mixture of frustration and determination. "I don't know… I just put more chakra into it, like you said."
Jiraiya couldn't believe what he was seeing. Naruto's progress was astounding, almost unnatural. The kid was blowing through the steps of mastering the Rasengan at a pace that defied all logic. Jiraiya had seen plenty of prodigies in his time, but there was something different about Naruto. Something raw and untapped, just waiting to be unleashed.
"Alright, brat," Jiraiya said, shaking off his shock. "The next step is all about refining that power and keeping it under control. You've got the strength—now you need the finesse. But don't get cocky. This part is where most people hit a wall."
Naruto nodded eagerly, his frustration replaced by a renewed sense of determination. "I got it. I'll keep working at it until I get it right!"
Jiraiya couldn't help but smile at Naruto's enthusiasm. "That's the spirit, kid. Just remember, this isn't a race. Mastery takes time. But with your progress… who knows?"
Naruto smiled at the praise then looked towards the road ahead, "So where's this person we're looking for? Did you find out anything new?"
Jiraiya ceased his thoughts on Naruto's training and answered, "I did actually. We're looking for Tsunade Senju, master medic ninja. I heard she was heading up towards the edge of the country, she'll probably wind up in Tanzaku Gai, so that's where we're going."
Jiraiya looked at the kid trying his hardest to master the jutsu, 'It took me two months just to get this far. It hasn't even been a day yet for him. Kid what are you going to be like in your prime? Thinking about something like that terrifies me.'
Naruto attempted Jiraiya's instructions. The Toad Sage actually breathed a sigh of relief when Naruto's balloon popped. If the kid got Rasengan in one day then he would have had a fit. Naruto received the pack of balloons from Jiraiya and took out another to blow up, "Well it looks like this will keep me busy for a while."
As they continued their journey, Naruto kept practicing, his mind focused entirely on mastering the Rasengan. Jiraiya watched him out of the corner of his eye, feeling a growing sense of pride and hope. This kid… he was something special. And if Jiraiya was right, Naruto might just be the key to changing the world.
But for now, they had a mission to complete, and Jiraiya knew that Naruto's training was just beginning. The road ahead was long and filled with challenges, but with each step, Naruto was growing stronger, more capable, and more determined.
And Jiraiya couldn't help but feel that they were on the brink of something extraordinary.
⁂
Tanzaku Gai
After hours of traveling, Naruto and Jiraiya finally approached what once was the famous castle of Tanzaku Gai. The once grand structure, known for its beauty and significance, now lay in ruins, reduced to nothing more than rubble and debris. The sight was shocking, and Naruto couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as he stared at the destruction.
Jiraiya and Naruto walked closer to the scene, their footsteps crunching against the broken stones beneath them. Naruto kicked at the rubble under his feet, trying to make sense of the devastation. Meanwhile, Jiraiya's sharp eyes scanned the area, quickly taking note of several deep holes in a nearby wall—distinctive marks that could only belong to one person.
"What happened here?" Naruto asked, his voice filled with surprise and confusion at the sheer scale of the damage. He turned to Jiraiya, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Who exactly is this medic ninja we're looking for?"
Jiraiya's expression grew serious, the usual lightheartedness in his demeanor replaced by a more somber tone. "The person we're looking for is Tsunade, one of my former teammates. She's a legendary kunoichi, one of the Sannin, just like me and Orochimaru. She's known for her incredible strength and medical ninjutsu. In fact, she's considered the best medical ninja in the entire world."
Naruto's eyes widened in shock. "The best medical ninja? And one of the Sannin? You mean she's as strong as you?"
"Stronger in some ways," Jiraiya admitted, his voice tinged with a mix of respect and caution. "Tsunade isn't someone to be taken lightly. She's saved countless lives with her skills, but she's also got a temper that could level mountains. That's probably what happened here."
Naruto looked back at the ruined castle, his mind racing with thoughts of what kind of person could cause such destruction. Before he could ask more questions, Jiraiya suddenly jerked him by the arm, pulling him away from the rubble. "Come on, kid. We're close—very close."
They continued their search through the town, stopping to ask locals if they had seen a woman fitting Tsunade's description. As the day wore on and the sun began to set, they found themselves outside a small, nondescript tavern. The warm glow from within and the sound of clinking glasses and light chatter offered a stark contrast to the ruined castle they had seen earlier.
Jiraiya stopped just outside the door, his senses on high alert. "This is the place," he muttered, more to himself than to Naruto.
The two of them stepped inside the tavern, the dim light casting long shadows across the room. Naruto's eyes adjusted quickly to the low light, and he noticed a few patrons scattered around, most of them keeping to themselves. Jiraiya, however, froze in his tracks, his gaze fixed on a particular table at the far end of the room.
"Tsunade?"
A blonde woman sitting at the table with a small cup of sake looked up in shock. She had a diamond-shaped mark on her forehead, and her eyes, once filled with tired resignation, widened in recognition. "Jiraiya?"
The tension in the room thickened as the two old comrades locked eyes. For a moment, the noise of the tavern faded away, leaving only the silent communication between the two Sannin.
Naruto looked between them, sensing the weight of their history but unsure of what to say. He had a million questions, but he knew instinctively that this wasn't the time to ask them.
Jiraiya took a deep breath, his usual jovial demeanor nowhere to be seen. "It's been a long time, Tsunade."
