Percy slowly pulled himself from the depths of oblivion. He stirred, blinking against the dappled light that played across his face. His body felt heavy, limbs sluggish and unresponsive as if weighed down by invisible chains. He was only half aware of the faint rustling of leaves ahead of him as he lay on a bed of soft moss. In front of Percy, watching intently was a tall blonde man. He had piercing blue eyes which held a steely hardness and a scar on his upper lip. The man, only a few years older than Percy, carried himself with the disciplined grace of a seasoned warrior.
"Who are you?" Percy asked.
"Jason Grace, son of Jupiter."
"Jupiter, as in the planet?" Jason didn't grace him with a response.
"Do you remember anything that happened?"
Percy tried to recollect his thoughts and to no surprise he had no idea what was going on. As he looked around, memories of the confrontation flooded back.
"I killed some bull guy, right?"
"A minotaur" Jason said. "Us big three demigods tend to be unlucky"
Percy looked around half expecting a hidden camera crew to jump out and yell, "Gotcha!" But the man in front of him looked dead serious, "Demigods?"
Jason furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, and Percy saw a hint of surprise in his eyes. "You have always felt different right?, probably diagnosed with adhd and dyslexia" he began, his voice steady and reassuring. Percy nodded, a flicker of curiosity in his sea-green eyes. "And that's because you are different," the man continued. "You are a demigod, born of a mortal and a deity."
"I'm the son of Sally Jackson and my father was lost at sea"
Jason cut him off, "Your father is the greek god Poseidon. He claimed you"
"god of the sea right", Percy sighed; his moms cover up story for his fathers disappearance was pretty accurate.
"and much more"
"I'm his son?"
"Yep" Jason said popping the p.
Apparently Percy was just supposed to accept that. His mom had taught him about greek myths and Percy couldn't help wonder if it was to prepare him. Percy pushed this thought down and instead introduced himself, which he realized he forgot to do, "I'm Percy Jackson by the way".
Jason looked like he was contemplating something. "Percy, where is your mom" he asked, his voice filled with concern and curiosity. Percy hesitated for a moment, glancing down at the ground before meeting the man's steady gaze.
"Prison. She killed a monster."
"Monsters disintegrate. Not to mention the mist."
"A human monster," Percy clarified. He was glad Jason had nodded in understanding.
Recollecting memories of his stepfather would stir a deep well of anger within him.
"She gave you that sword to protect you from monsters. Unfortunately, it's not effective against the mortal kind."
They fell into a comfortable silence after that.
"What did you mean by 'the mist'?"
"It's a veil of some sort. It protects mortal eyes from things they can't comprehend. Builds up illusions and other stuff"
Percy hummed, the gears in his brain twisting and turning.
"Can you build up illusions?"
"I can but it's pretty much only effective on mortals " Jason replied, unsure where this was going.
Percy grinned, "perfect. So I've decided you'll help me free my mom. Think of it as a demigod quest"
Jason groaned.
