The Sorcerer Hero: Deku
Chapter thirty-three: Umm... Happy New Year?
The interns of the top ten heroes were all running evacuation duty while the pro heroes tried to fight the forces that the League of Villains had brought to the table to contend with the big wigs of the HPSC. The undead looking quirk forged monsters had lost all of their Black Paladins, so the pros had no need to fear them. It's the three giant villains who Dabi had brought that the top tenners had to focus on while the sidekicks fought the quirk forged monsters.
But even the top tenners, backed by a lot of other pro heroes, struggled with the male giants. And not all of the top tenners were fighting those giants; Hawks was being chased by Albedo and by no means was able to stop unless he wanted to die. That left just nine of the top ten heroes available to fight the three male giants; three top tenners per giant, backed by multiple other pro heroes, was the way to go here for the best that Japanese pro hero society had to offer.
But it was slow going, especially as two of the male giants were on the ground while the third was flying up in the air. And there was still how the combat maids of Nazarick were kidnapping all of the top echelon members of the HPSC. Guarded by some level one-hundred Nazarick NPCs, the combat maids could operate with impunity, even if All Might still had power and was still an active pro hero. The power of Nazarick truly was unfathomable.
The interns of the top ten heroes could only focus on getting civilians out of harms way while the pros did all of the fighting. "There!" Tenya said as he and the others got another group of civilians out of the danger zone, "That's thirty civilians rescued so far!"
"We can't rest on our laurels, Iida-san," Jurota advised, "There's still loads of people we need to get out of there so that the pro heroes can focus on fighting the forces that the League of Villains had brought in."
"But why would the League of Villains attack that big ass fancy building?" Bakugo asked, pointing at the building that had been ravaged by (at least) Ratatoskr and Felgrand.
"That's the headquarters for the HPSC, Bakugo," Tamaki pointed out, "You know, the guys who more or less run pro hero society here in Japan?!"
Pounding a hand into his fist, Kirishima said, "So THAT'S what the villains are after! They wanna try to take out who can reasonably be assumed to be the bosses of every pro hero in the country!"
"Oh my, looks like the boy with red hair is smarter than he looks."
Everyone stopped short when they heard a female voice call out. Suddenly, the owner of that voice, Shalltear Bloodfallen, landed in front of the hero interns, decked out in her winged red armor and wielding her Spuit Lance. Nejire, gulping nervously, pointed to the armored Vampire. "That's... that's the monster who single handedly fought All Might to a draw during the raid on the Shie Hassaikai compound," Nejire said nervously, "Honyopenyoko."
Shalltear nodded once in confirmation, remembering that she had to keep using an alias as per the order of her lord. "I saw you herolings taking people away from the area of all of the fighting," began Shalltear, "I can't help but wonder why you'd waste time getting them out of harm's way. Wouldn't it be simpler for you to ignore them and fight what all Dabi had brought to keep you hero lot busy so that we can make off with the top members of the HPSC?"
Stepping forward, Kirishima said, "It's hella un-manly to let innocent civilians stay in harms way! There's more to being a hero than simply punching bad guys in the face! Hell, it's more heroic to save an endangered civilian than it is to fight a villain!"
Shalltear gave Kirishima a wry look. "...You're one of the apprentice heroes to that big tall fat man hero," Shalltear said, "You know, I got it that he's one of the very few persons who succeeded in killing a Black Paladin. No small feat, I'll grant him that. I wonder what further sport he can provide."
"Fat Gum is way stronger than you can guess," Kirishima declared firmly.
"He's right!" Tetsutetsu agreed, "Fat Gum is stronger than anyone you'd care to name!"
Shalltear looked visibly annoyed at that declaration from Tetsutetsu. "...Oh, I'm sure that I can name at least one person who can do to your pro hero mentor what the three female giant bodyguards of Dabi's did to that Fukuoka place," Shalltear said, her tone making it clear that Tetsutetsu had pissed her off greatly.
As Tetsutetsu and Kirishima were boldly staring down Shalltear, Yaoyorozu who stood behind them said, "Boys, this monster fought All Might in a one on one to a draw and was able to leave on her own afterwards. She clearly sounds upset, so let's try calming her down before she decides to show us how she can go toe to toe with the best pro hero Japan had ever known."
"Your fat friend has a point, boys," Shalltear said to the hard boy duo while pointing at Yaoyorozu, "I can get rather upset with any shade that's thrown at my lord, so do avoid doing that unless you want me to kill you."
Stepping forward, Nirengeki said, "Trust me, we'd be no match for you Miss Honyopenyoko. We'll try to keep out of your way if you'll let us."
"I one-hundred percent agree with him," Tamaki said, "The lot of us combined would be wiped in an instant by you. Why not find stronger fare to fight instead?"
"What are you cowards talking about?" Setsuna asked, "Hell, Midoriya here has slain more Black Paladins than you can shake a stick at, and he drove off that oni samurai guy from the provisional licence exams! I bet that he can take this armored vampire chick!"
Holding her free hand to her chin, Shalltear said, "Actually, that samurai and I are comparable in terms of overall power. It seems rather dishonorable that he was forced to retreat, and by a mere heroling to boot." Shalltear assumed a stance for battle. "Midoriya was your name, yes?" Shalltear said to Ainz, "Let's see if the vampire valkyrie can succeed where the oni samurai had failed! The two of us doing battle would have the benefit of your allies here having cover from me as you and I will be locked in combat with each other."
Turning to look at Setsuna, Nejire said, "Well good going, Tokage. You got the only person known to have fought All Might to a standstill wanting to fight Midoriya."
"But she admitted that the oni samurai is comparable to her in terms of overall power," Tokage shot back, "And Midoriya drove that dude off no prob! He cab handle this vampire chick in the red armor no prob I bet!"
True, Ainz had fought Shalltear before and won, in a true fight although Ainz went in crazy prepared. But this fight, as Ainz had set things up with Shalltear beforehand, would be the mock fight that they would of had during the raid on the old Shie Hassaikai compound had it not been for All Might very clearly wanting to hog as much glory for himself as possible.
They would fight until they got it via the Message system that all VIPs of the HPSC were captured, then Ainz would 'defeat' Shalltear who would complain about her opponent being too much before retreating in 'defeat'. Holding up his sceptre in a challenging gesture, Ainz said, "Very well. I will do battle with you, Honyopenyoko. The Sorcerer Hero Deku shall be your opponent."
"If you can fly, then follow me," Shalltear said before she flew up into the air. Ainz, with multiple methods of flying at his disposal, used the Flight spell to get into the air. The two flew in place as they faced one another.
The other interns looked up before Tsuyu said, "Guys, while Midoriya has that monster occupied, we ought to find as many more civilians as possible to get out of the danger zone before we ourselves should find safety kero. With monsters like those three giants and the vampire girl who had fought All Might in a one on one to a standstill running around, we might meet Mineta's fate if we stay here longer than necessary."
Looking down to Tsuyu, Ochaco said, "You got a point, Tsuyu. We still have a job as heroes to do. Let's do our part while Izuku does his."
Bakugo looked back up into the air, where already Ainz and Shalltear were fighting. All Might himself fought Shalltear, in a one-v-one, but at best could only score a tie with the vampire valkyrie, and the fight was so rough on All Might he couldn't be a hero anymore afterwards. Deku was fighting a monster that makes even Black Paladins look like mere gnats. But Shalltear said she was about as strong as the oni samurai from the provisional licence exams, and Deku drove him off easy.
The explosive teen, muttering a single hopeful and pleading, "Deku..." before lowering his head back down to help his fellows with evacuating any and all civilians they could find had to hope that Deku would be able to foot the bill here.
Endeavor, backed by his sidekicks, Fat Gum, Mirko, and various lesser ranked pro heroes, were having a tough time dealing with Inumaru. Even with the discovery that fire at least had some effect on Inumaru unlike how Nekohime proved completely fireproof, Endeavor and the other fire quirk users were barely able to do anything period. The dog boy giant loosed another one of his spine chilling howls, but those in its path who already were hit and recovered were better able to shrug off the terrifying howl.
Unfortunately, both Fat Gum and Mirko were among those hit by the howl. "Someone snap them and the other frightened pro heroes out of it!" Endeavor roared as he fired a blast of flames into Inumaru's face to distract him, "You're better able to resist the howls if you were hit by them before and recovered from it!"
As some pro heroes were forced to snap the frightened pro heroes out of it, Endeavor had to dodge as Inumaru sent needle shots of his fur at him. Endeavor flew around and traced a line on Inumaru's right flank with a beam of flames. The dog boy giant turned his attention to the Flame Hero and tried lunging at him, aiming to snap him up with his canine maw.
However, Inumaru stopped short when Dabi called out, "Down Inumaru, down boy! Endeavor is going to be mine to kill!" Endeavor turned around to look at Dabi, who came riding in on his flying Nomu mount, with Spinner on his flying Nomu mount right next to him. "What do you think?" Dabi asked, in clear knowing amusement, "Isn't what I got pretty impressive?"
"You fiend!" Endeavor barked, "Do you know how much damage you could do here?!"
Shrugging, Dabi said, "At least be thankful that the kid who killed a lot of Black Paladins is keeping Honyopenyoko distracted. She'd of killed the other herolings otherwise, although she would let your bouncing baby boy live as I want him to stay alive."
Fearful alarm instantly appeared in Endeavor's face, which slowly lost color. "Midoriya is fighting the monster that not even that oaf All Might could score a win against?"
Spinner turned to see where Ainz was fighting Shalltear in the air. "...From the looks of it," Spinner began, "I'd say that Honyopenyoko is not having as easy a time as she di-"
*rush*
Spinner was cut off when Endeavor rushed off in the direction that Ainz was fighting Shalltear in, a look on his face making it clear that he intended to take over fighting Shalltear for Ainz. "...He gon die," Spinner said dryly.
"Or maybe not," Dabi said, "The boss man stressed it to Honyopenyoko that Endeavor is mine to kill in the end."
...
Over where Ainz was fighting Shalltear, he lobbed a few fireballs at Shalltear, who blocked most of them but allowed a few to hit her directly. She then allowed a direct hit from Dragon Lightning to strike her. "No wonder you were able to chase off the oni samurai, Deku!" Shalltear called out, "You are one of the few heroes with actual power at their disposal!"
"You're quite the opponent as well, Honyopenyoko!" Ainz called back, "Able to not lose a fight to All Might! You're probably the first being in history to accomplish that feat!"
Shalltear readied her Spuit Lance for a 'charge' at Ainz, but when she rushed in she only got halfway to her lord before a stream of fire cut through the space between them, distracting Shalltear and making her stop short. Endeavor then flew into the space between Shalltear and Ainz. "Midoriya!" barked the Flame Hero, "Leave this monster to me! She's too much for a first year hero academy student like yourself!"
The vampire valkyrie instantly became more annoyed. "...Actually, he's putting up a better fight than anyone I've ever fought before," Shalltear said, her tone containing constrained annoyed range.
"Don't bother with flattery, you monster," Endeavor said, "Deku as strong as he may be is still a whelp! He's no match for All Might who you fought until he couldn't be a hero anymore!"
Shalltear was getting more and more pissed because Endeavor was (unknowingly) talking smack about the leader of the forty-one Supreme Beings of Nazarick. "...Were it not for the fact that Dabi has dibs on it and I have to respect it," Shalltear snarled, "I'd kill you here and now."
"Deku, run and let me fight this monster for you!" Endeavor said as he turned to look at Ainz, not knowing that Shalltear was rushing him, "She's too-"
*slash*
Shalltear dealt Endeavor a slashing strike with her Spuit Lance that knocked him down. Only the timely arrival of Hawks who just so happened to have flown by at the time while fleeing from the relentless chase from Albedo had prevented the Flame Hero from suffering a nasty fall. "Be thankful that I held back enough to make sure I didn't kill you!" Shalltear yelled, "You're Dabi's to kill!"
Ainz saw Albedo still chasing after Hawks who had been slowed down due to having to carry the wounded Endeavor. He fired a fireball at her direction, which intentionally missed as it was clearly a warning shot. "You, in the black armor," Ainz called to Albedo, "Those two are exhausted and hurt. Why not back up who is obviously your fellow villain here?"
Albedo could tell that her lord and the love of her life was ordering her to join Shalltear as an ally in the mock fight between Shalltear and Ainz. Albedo wasn't exactly sure why, but if Ainz ordered it then of course she'd love nothing more than to do so. "Very well, heroling," Albedo replied as she remembered how to act given prior instructions from Ainz, "Those heroes were weak anyway. If you can last long enough against our vampire to still be alive, then you're bound to be fun."
Ainz intended to explain to Albedo later why she had to ignore Hawks and Endeavor. He felt that he owed at least that much to her.
Ryukyu and Majestic were leading the other pro heroes available to them who can fly in an big aerial battle against Felgrand who, same as Ryukyu herself, is a dragon. Just a far larger dragon, who also very clearly had more quirks given he was far too large to be such a size without Gigantification, and he had also controlled the weather to make it rain.
Felgrand then sent a fierce gale of whipping winds at a portion of flying heroes that didn't have Majestic or Ryukyu among their number, before firing a sonic scream at the flying heroes in that direction who were able to avoid the winds. "This isn't good," Majestic said, "The dragon that we got here is proving to be far too strong! I'd take dealing with a Black Paladin over dealing with this guy any day of the week! I don't think that even any of the female giants from the chaos in Fukuoka are as bad as this guy!"
Ryukyu saw Felgrand cast an explosion at another few flying heroes. Despite how she and Majestic were the two highest ranked pro heroes facing Felgrand, he was strangely enough ignoring Ryukyu and the Magic Hero. "You think there's a reason why he hasn't tried attacking us yet?" Ryukyu asked Majestic, "Why he even saved us when his squirrelly fellow tried attacking us?"
"Maybe he's saving us for last," Majestic replied grimly, "He may recognize us as the best against him, so he's saving us for a grand finale." Felgrand fired a fire breath weapon at another flying hero, who quickly scrambled to get out of the way. "...I say we make the grand finale happen early!" said Majestic as he rushed in to confront Felgrand.
"Majestic wait!" Ryukyu called out as she flew in to catch up with Majestic. The two flying top tenners rushed right up to Felgrand, where Majestic fired a series of conjured energy rings right at the gargantuan dragon. Felgrand turned his attention over to where Majestic and Ryukyu flew in place, and actually took pause upon seeing them.
"...We have your attention, right?" Majestic said to Felgrand, "If that's the case, can you tell us why you and the other giant villains working for Dabi-"
"Majestic, Ryukyu, look out!" a female flying hero called out, and immediately after that both flying top tenners confronting Felgrand were slammed by a barrage of energy attacks from various flying pro heroes backing them up against the gargantuan dragon. Both Ryukyu and Majestic were sent shooting down to the ground at a rather fast speed.
But surprisingly enough, Felgrand shot out a very long tongue that he sent to wrap around the two flying top tenners, and then using said tongue pulled them back up to around his level before letting them go. Ryukyu and Majestic were able to right themselves after Felgrand let them go. "Did..." the flying female hero who called out began, "...did the monster actually save you two?"
Felgrand turned to look at the flying female hero, and pulled back his right hand as the claws on it glowed fiercely with great heat. He was about to slash at the flying female hero, but an in unison call of, "Wait!" from Ryukyu and Majestic had stayed his dragonic hand.
Felgrand turned to look back to Ryukyu and Majestic. "You... you aren't too bad," Ryukyu said, "I can tell you have a good heart."
"She's right," Majestic said, "You don't have to fight the heroes."
Flying in place, Felgrand considered the words of the flying top tenners before another barrage of ranged quirk attacks from the other flying heroes hit him this time, making him cry out in surprise more than anything before he turned his attention back on the other flying heroes and proceeded to go right at them. "Damn it," Majestic swore, "We could have reasoned with one of the giants had the others not forced the fight to resume!"
"There's also something... familiar... about the giant dragon villain," Ryukyu said as she and Majestic flew in to try to help the other flying heroes fight Felgrand.
Best Jeanist, Edgeshot, Shishido, and Ingenium were among the many pro heroes that were fighting Ratatoskr on the ground away from where Endeavor's party was fighting Inumaru. Ratatoskr loosed a burst of sleep inducing pink smoke, but a fire quirk user among the many lesser pro heroes helping the top tenners against the squirrel boy giant set the smoke on fire by accident. That smoke, which had turned out to be combustible, blew up everything within a certain radius.
Many pro heroes were sent flying by the explosion, and Ratatoskr avoided the brunt of it by flying up into the air with his paws on smooth glass orbs he was controlling. Best Jeanist tried to send fibers up at Ratatoskr, but he blasted the fibers with a powerful burst of water from his front right paw which he raised up. The soaked fibers became heavier, not helped by the rain already making cloth damp and weighing more. Ratatoskr was able to easily avoid Best Jeanist's move.
Ratatoskr then landed back down and ran quickly towards the heroes led by Best Jeanist and his group. But Mt. Lady in her giant size came in and was able to catch him. "Hold it right there, Squirrel Boy!" Mt. Lady cried out as she tried to wrestle the squirrel boy giant, "The villains aren't the only ones with a giant on their side, you know!"
"Mt. Lady, be careful!" Edgeshot called out, "The male giants attacking here are reasoned to all be bigger threats than the female giants who attacked in Fukuoka!"
Trying to wrestle Ratatoskr away from the smaller heroes, Mt. Lady called back, "How come? The girl giants were all reported to have durability enhancing quirks, but none of the boy giants seem to have that advantage!"
"They all seem to have speed enhancing quirks to compensate," Best Jeanist replied as he and the others moved in to help Mt. Lady restrain Ratatoskr, "And a variety of-" Best Jeanist stopped short when Ratatoskr cried out like a pissed off squirrel, before making his vine hair grow long and whip around all over the place, then unleashing a shower of countless bright pink glowing lights that struck all heroes fighting him like hail.
Mt. Lady was thrown off of the squirrel boy giant, and he turned to face her. He tried to attack her after making his arm muscles grow insanely huge, but Best Jeanist was able to catch Ratatoskr's left arm and try pulling it back. "You will leave her alone, monster!" Best Jeanist yelled as he tried with all his might and all the might his quirk had over fibers to pull Ratatoskr away from the prone Mt. Lady who was trying to pick herself up still.
Glaring at Best Jeanist, Ratatoskr gave a shrill squirrel like cry before he decided to pummel where Best Jeanist stood, his super muscled arms swinging punches in at a pace that many would think was impossible due to how incredibly fast arms with such mass was moving at. Large craters had formed in the asphalt where Ratatoskr's fists crashed into where many pro heroes stood. Dust that had been kicked up by Ratatoskr's fury was still up after the squirrel boy giant ceased his assault.
"Hey, Best Jeanist and Shishido were both in that area of attack!" Ingenium called out, "Someone get confirmation if they're still okay!"
Edgeshot scowled bitterly. "Damn it. The villains really have caught us heroes unawares." It was very clear that the fight against the male giant villains working for Dabi was going to be a long and hard ordeal, even if (by some miracle) the heroes won.
Up in the air, Ainz's mock fight with Shalltear resumed, only this time Albedo had to join Shalltear as an assistant due to Hawks leading her over and getting a wounded Endeavor out of there. It greatly bothered Albedo that she had to fight her lord, even though she knew full well it was a farce, and she swore to make Hawks and Endeavor pay for leading her into having to fight the greatest of the forty-one Supreme Beings.
Ainz cast a Fireball at Shalltear and followed up with a Dragon Lightning at Albedo, pushing both female Floor Guardians back. "You ladies truly are an impressive duo when working together," Ainz remarked aloud, "You two can make any guy wanna be in your company, knowing that such strong ladies have his back!"
Both Albedo and Shalltear lit up when Ainz told them they could make any guy wanna be with them; it was clear he was praising them in a way he knew they'd appreciate, and appreciate it they did. "Well you're certainly far stronger than that blonde oaf or that pathetic excuse for a birthday cake candle," Shalltear said, blushing a little.
"Yes, I have to agree," Albedo replied, already feeling her underwear undergoing a bit of an emergency because her lord was praising her. Albedo now understood why Shalltear got wet that one time very shortly after Nazarick arrived in the first New World, and her disgust towards the true vampire for being so crass lessened as a result.
Ainz was about to attack, but he stopped short upon getting a Message from Entoma, who was helping the other combat maids kidnap all of the big name HPSC members. "Lord Ainz," Entoma said in the Message spell, "We have successfully gotten everyone on the list."
"Very well," Ainz replied, "Time to wrap things up here." Ending the Message link, Ainz declared to Shalltear and Albedo, "It's time that I bring your terror to an end!" Ainz then cast Bone Lance right at both Shalltear and Albedo. Both girls were hit, but upon seeing and hearing Shalltear act like she had been dealt a devastating blow, Albedo got the cue to act the same.
"Curses, heroling!" Shalltear declared loudly, "No wonder you drove off the oni samurai! Even I, when backed up by someone of comparable power as me no less, can't best you!"
"Indeed!" Albedo declared, "I am just about spent, and would be doomed if I stayed to try fighting to the last!" The two female floor guardians, with Albedo following Shalltear, turned around and flew off, clearly fleeing from battle against the Sorcerer King. As Ainz flew in place, dark portals popped in and claimed Ratatoskr, Inumaru, and Felgrand, none of them any worse for wear.
...But the heroes took one hell of a serious pounding in that fight. And what's worse is that many of the most important members of the HPSC were all kidnapped, crippling the organization in charge of running pro hero society in Japan. Although the heroes saw some success, what success they did see was vastly outweighed by what failure they saw.
...
Not counting hero interns, at least one-hundred and twenty pro heroes total fought against the forces that Dabi brought to bear when he had directly challenged the headquarters building of the HPSC. Out of that one-hundred and twenty plus count, a third of them were killed in action, including both Best Jeanist and Shishido of the current Top Ten on the Hero Billboard Charts JP. There was also how Endeavor was critically wounded, all top HPSC members were kidnapped, and the damage caused to the cityscape during the fighting had a price tag comparable to what Fukuoka got.
Surprisingly, there was a grand total of zero civilian deaths, although one civilian was moderately injured. When that bit was made public, it lessened how mad the common people of Japan got at their pro heroes over failing arguably worse than they did in Fukuoka. Further lightening the mood of the people was news that the hero student Izuku Midoriya, already famed for among other things being the premiere slayer of Black Paladins, managed to defeat the vampire quirk forged monster that even All Might was only able to score a tie with, sending her fleeing in defeat.
Izuku also defeated the villain who was chasing Hawks, who would have surely killed him, and sent her packing alongside Honyopenyoko. Combined with how Izuku killed most of the Black Paladins who were present at the fighting (Endeavor killed the only one Izuku didn't get as he fought before Izuku was allowed to), there were many in Japan who felt that Izuku, despite being only a first year hero academy student, was already the best hero that Japan had at its disposal currently. But even with all of the praise that he was getting for his actions, Izuku Midoriya remained humble.
"I still have a lot to learn at U.A.," Ainz said when he was interviewed, "I believe that I got lucky is all. But I will remain vigilant, something I believe all heroes in Japan, pro or otherwise, ought to do. We have no idea where or when the villains will strike next."
The heroes had been dealt another hard loss by the League of Villains, and only a hero student who has only his provisional licence was able to keep things from being a total loss for the heroes. The people of Japan were becoming less and less confident that they were going to be able to get out of the mess that they were finding themselves in, as their best hope for that was proving to be more and more ineffective as time went on. And with the kidnapping of the whole of the top echelons of the HPSC, things never looked bleaker for the pro heroes of Japan.
...Luckily that was about to change.
END, CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
Author's notes;
This chapter sees the rest of the fight outside of the HPSC headquarters building wrap up, with the pro heroes proving largely ineffective against Inumaru, Ratatoskr, and Felgrand. Additionally, only Ainz was able to defeat Shalltear and later Albedo, although only those three know that their fight was a mock fight. A grand total of forty-seven pro heroes (including two top tenners, Best Jeanist and Shishido) were killed, and all top HPSC members were kidnapped, resulting in a loss for the pro heroes greater than what they got in Fukuoka.
But not all hope is lost. Some information was gathered, and from said information the pro heroes will be able to formulate a plan to try to strike back against Dabi and the rest of the horde that he has at his beck and call. But the pro heroes will have to muster as much of what strength that they have left just to stand a chance against what all the Paranormal Liberation Front will be bringing to the table. It will be the greatest challenge that Japan's pro heroes have ever face. Take care, folks.
