I DO NOT OWN HATFIELDS OR MCCOYS.

Tug River Valley. Later that day.

Johnse sat on his horse, trying to close the wound from Tolbert's rifle. As he attempted to slow the blood flow, he saw Bud McCoy walking a horse back across the Tug with a sad Roseanna sitting upon said horse. He saw Bud give his sister a hug after she had dismounted the steed before getting on and riding back to the McCoy homestead.

"Roseanna...what's the matter?" Johnse asked with concern as she dried her eyes.

"Poppy threw me out." Roseann cried as wrapped her arms around his horse. "Said I could do what I want, since I ain't his daughter no mores."

"I'm so sorry darlin, I knew this weren't how ya wanted this ta go." Johnse said with sympathy as he meant what he said. Roseanna had told him that Ol' Randall considered her his favorite child. Was his hate for the Hatfields so great that he would disown his eldest girl?

"I ain't got nowhere ta go, Johnse." She wept as Johnse reached down and grabbed her hand.

"You'll come home wit me. If Randall said doesn't care if ya marry me, my daddy can't object." He insisted as he used all his strength to help Roseanna back on his horse before riding back to the Hatfield homestead.

Hatfield Homestead, West Virginia. Later that day.

Devil Anse Hatfield and his wife Levicy had been horrified when Roseanna helped Johnse into the house with a bullet wound in his side. Levicy immediately got to work doctoring her son. Thankfully, the bleeding had stopped and now the wound could be closed. Johnse sat on the kitchen table as Levicy inspected the wound.

"Have Doc Rutherford take a look." She said as she tried to apply ointment to the wound.

"Ma, it's fine." Johnse smarted as the ointment stung like a bitch.

"Get your hand out!" Levicy ordered.

I'm doing the same thing you're doing." Johnse shot back before turning to his old man. "Daddy, her father don't object."

"Well, looks like somebody did." Devil Ande replied as he took a drag off his pipe.

"Yeah, her bonehead brothers." Johnse remarked before groaning again.

"Could you hold still?" Levicy asked with frustration in her voice.

"I wanna hear again that Randall McCoy agreed to you marrying his daughter." Anse replied, knowing that Ol' Randall would sooner damn the confederate army than give his daughter to a Hatfield husband.

"Not exactly, he said he don't care." Johnse clarified, knowing he'd been caught.

"Don't care...Well, don't care ain't permission."

"He said it in front of witnesses."

"Well, was that before or after you got shot?" Anse asked pointedly as Johnse closed his eyes in defeat. "I will not defy McCoy or any man when it comes to his daughter."

"Daddy, please, if you give permission, he'll surely come around..." Johnse pleaded, knowing that this wedding wouldn't happen without his parents support.

"Goddamn it boy, they try to kill you!" Devil Anse exclaimed in anger as he slammed his fist down on the table. "Now you wanna marry into that?" While this was going on, Roseanna was sitting on Johnse's bed, hearing the argument. She knew that Anse would never support them. It had been wrong to come back.

"You know what, this ain't right. Me and her wanna be man and wife!" Johnse declared, unhindered by his father's lack of approval. "We're both of age..."

"Don't be a fool, you only just met her." Levicy said as she cuffed her boy on the forehead, hopefully knocking some sense into him.

"Mama, Roseanna's been throwed out." Johnse whispered, playing the only card he had left. "She got no place to go." Devil Anse saw that Levicy was faltering in her resolve and decided to put an end ti the matter right then and there.

"You will never marry a McCoy." Anse growled as he stared his son down. "She will be leaving this house. You leave this house to go after her, you don't come back."

"Daddy..." Johnse stammered in disbelief at his daddy throwing him out.

"Anse, no." Levicy said as the Hatfield Matriarch raise his hand to silence her.

"Now, you make your choice, make it now: stay or go." Anse insisted as Johnse was silent for a few moments before he rose from the table with a heavy heart. Johnse went over to his room where he saw Roseanna sitting on the bed.

"Johnse..." she stammered in tears as she cursed herself for costing him his family.

"We gotta go Roseanna...Daddy ain't never gonna let us git married." He said quietly as she rose from the end and followed him out. Anse had his back to the couple as Levicy fought back her tears. As Johnse and Roseanna left the Hatfield house, the clouds turned dark and thunder could be heard.

"Storm's a coming, we'd best get to Pikeville." Johnse said as he got his girl up on the horse before getting up himself and slowly trotting away from his home and his family.

Tug River, later that evening.

Unfortunately, the storm came on harder and quicker than anticipated. The rain was pushed around hard by the wind as Johnse and Roseanna struggled to make it through.

"Johnse...we can't see nuthin, we gotta go back!" Roseanna called out as she held onto him; both lovers were soaked to the bone by this point.

"We're almost there...just gotta cross...the river!" Johnse cried out as a huge bolt of lightning struck the ground right in front of them; spooking the horse and getting them both thrown off not the river. The Tug had turned wild as Johnse and Roseanna struggled to stay afloat.

"JOHNSE!" Roseanna shouted out loud as she couldn't see a thing.

"I LOVE YOU ROSEANNA!" Johnse shouted in return as they felt their world going black as the River carried them far away from the world they had once known.
