"Hey." Kevin greeted as he stood up from his desk to pin new evidence on the case board. The text message I had received on my way to dropping Eva at school informed me Intelligence had been assigned another case. "I assume everything is good if you're back at work today?" He hung another picture next to the first one. "Jay told us you had to take Eva to the emergency room last night."
"She's been having some stomach pain," I told him, draping my jacket over my chair.I still felt bad for not getting her in, not recognizing the severity of how bad it was for her. "I decided it was time to take her to the emergency room and see if we could get some answers."
"Were you able to?" He looked back over his shoulder for a response. He was genuinely concerned and it made me feel good that I had support from the team. It had been a while since I had a real conversation with any one of them since Eva had arrived.
"Abdominal migraines."
"I'm sorry that's rough. Anything I can do?" Kevin brushed his fingers over his chin before sitting down on the edge of his desk to look over the board. "She's only six, right?"
"She'll be six in October. And no, I don't think so, but thank you. She's on medication to help control the migraines now. Natalie mentioned she'll probably outgrow them, but there's a chance she'll develop migraines when she's older."
"One more month then."
"I can hardly believe it myself." It was true. I almost had a six-year-old who was experiencing more things than I ever thought she would in her lifetime. I had already been down that road myself in a different way, I wanted nothing but her to have a normal life.
"Sorry, that's rough. Do you know what causes them?"
"It could be genetic, stress or because of certain foods. Right now the medication is doing its job so we'll see how that works. Do we have another case?" I didn't want to interrupt his questioning but I was still trying to get used to people asking about her. I also didn't want to take away from the case we were on, so I tipped my chin towards the pictures he had just hung up on the board.
"Yeah. We're still working to get those M4's off the street, and I think we finally found our way in." He pointed to the two pictures on top, before panning down to the other two below. "I'll be running with Malik and Shabazz, while Jay runs with Nate and Dexter. If everything goes right, maybe we can finally get those guns off the street."
"We're certain Nate and Dexter are the ones selling them?" Finding myself taking one step forward, I gazed at all the faces we were going to be dealing with. Dexter had a glint in those deep brooding eyes that told me he didn't mind getting in a bit of trouble.
"Or they know who is."
"Hey." Kim greeted Kevin first, her eyebrow shooting up as she caught my eye and bounded up the stairs. "You're back." There was a tone of relief in her voice as she walked up to me. I could tell she didn't quite know what to do, especially it being a new subject and all. "I heard you had to take Eva to the ER. is everything okay?"
"Yeah, I think we're okay now. Eva had been sick this past weekend and looked like she was starting to feel better. I went to pick her up a couple days ago and she tells me as we're going down the elevator that her stomach is still not feeling very well. Of course, Natalie and Will are the only people I know, so I figured taking her to the ER would be the best choice."
"Were you able to figure out what was going on?"
"Abdominal migraines."
"Now that sounds awful to have to deal with every day." Kim lamented with me the same way I felt about the diagnosis. Sure, it could have been worse, but it was still something that you didn't want to deal with when you did. "So what can they do for her?"
"At the moment, she's on medication, and it seems to be working. We're hoping that will be the only measure we need to take to help control the pain she's been in because of them." For a moment I didn't know if I wanted to tell them this. "She was a good sport but there was a moment when we were walking to the hospital and she just freaked out."
"Did she give any reason why?"
"All she told me was she didn't want to go in there and she wanted to go home. Afterward, I got thinking about it and realized that maybe it was because of her parents. She thinks they're going to the hospital and when they don't come back-"
"She thinks she won't either," Kevin remarked almost sadly as he grabbed a pen from his drawer so he could write down some information he just looked up on the computer. "That can't be easy for a five, almost six-year-old to comprehend losing her parents, let alone going into a hospital soon after to help her figure out what's going on with her."
"Well, I'm glad to at least hear that the medicine they gave her seems to be working." She stepped back over to her own desk and took a seat. We could hear the gate screeching open, along with several voices echoing upstairs which meant we were only moments away from briefing about this case. "Hey, before I forget. We're all meeting at Molly's on Friday after work. My treat." Adam appeared first, watching the tail end of the exchange from the comfort of his desk. "Think of it kind of like a celebration of supporting you."
"I will think about it."
"We could always meet at my place if that's better. Just let me know." I wanted to say yes, but right now a part of me hadn't adjusted since taking Eva in. By the time I got home, I was exhausted and didn't want to go anywhere. Eva was at school most of the day, then with Betsey while I was working, and I still didn't feel comfortable leaving her there longer than she had to just so I could go hang out with the rest of the team.
