Chapter 2: Better Together

It was a restless night for Rogue, tossing and turning in her motel bed and wincing in pain from her injuries. She lets out some soft sounds as her nightmares plagued her, her breathing quickening. Remy wakes up groggily noticing Rogue wasn't doing too well. He sits up a bit, wincing in pain from his own injuries. "Chère?" He whispers.

Rogue's brows furrow as a sentinel barreled towards her in her nightmare. "N-no…" She breathes out. "S-stay away…"

She screams awake when the sentinel in her dream enclosed on her, her hands gripping the sheets as she forced herself up and panting frantically. Remy leapt out of bed, grunting a bit as he moved fast to her. "Rogue, 's jus' a nightmare." He says softly as he goes to comfort her.

Rogue looks around the room, then noticed Remy looking at her concerned. He flicks on the bedside lamp, noticing her face was red with sweat as she panted. "Y' okay?" He asks.

"Ah'm sorreh… Ah didn' mean ta wake ya." She says, looking away from him.

"No, 's okay." He nods in assurance. "Y' don' look s' good, chère."

"Ah'm fahne." Rogue brushed him off.

He uses a gloved hand to feel her forehead, feeling her skin burning up. His brows furrow. If she was coming down with something while they were both injured, they risk getting caught if the Sentinels are still looking for them. He knew he had to be strategic with what they do and where they stay but because they're both injured and now Rogue's coming down with something, this could limit their mobility. "Rogue y' burnin' up. Y' gettin' a fever." He looks at her, a serious expression on his face.

Rogue looks at him, hating how she's going to be slowing them down. They put as much distance from Bayville as they could for the moment, Rogue hoping they could lay low in their motel until both are better from their injuries, but now that she's coming down with a fever, there was no telling with how long they'll remain in the area. "Ah'll be fahne, Remy. Realleh. Ah just need some sleep." She tries to reassure him but he wasn't buying it.

Remy's been at the institute for almost a year, knowing Rogue does this so no one worries about her. She always kept everyone at a distance from her, but he was different and she knew it, too. He was persistent. After he arrived to the mansion, he hung around her the most, which she was just shocked he was even there after they parted in New Orleans on Bloodmoon Bayou. She couldn't understand why he constantly went after her. He made it known he wasn't afraid of her powers. Remy was, however, the only one to ever make progress with her over the period he has been staying at the institute. She was still hesitant but there were moments she would let her guard down. This was another one of those moments.

Remy noticed her shaking, deciding to get under her covers. Rogue winces as she scoots back in shock. "What are ya doin' swamp rat?!" She demanded.

"What's it look like?" He gives her his trademark grin, but there was no mischief in his eyes. "Y' need some sleep, 'm helpin' y' stay warm. Dese thin motel sheets won' keep y' warm."

Rogue narrows her eyes, but she shivered and winced as her body shook uncontrollably. She hated that he was sorta right. "If ah absorb ya in yer sleep, den it'll be yer fault." She warns.

Remy snorts and rolls his eyes. "'Ll be fine. Jus' relax chère and let Remy help y'."

Rogue pouts with her full lips, Remy finding it cute whenever she pouted. How he wanted to kiss those lips. He held his arms open for her, Rogue shakily lying back down and shutting her eyes. She lets out a groan as she felt her body quivering more, Remy placing a hand on her forehead again and frowning at how hot she felt under his glove. "Jus' sleep, chère." He whispers.

He pulls the sheets up as far as he could, his other arm wrapped around her small frame. He wasn't going back to sleep just yet, he wanted to make sure she was okay as she slept incase he had to make any decisions. Her body quivered against his, her breathing labored as she slept. He felt bad for her, seeing this was his first time seeing her like this. He wondered if she ever got sick often, but then again he heard she was the mansions most frequent visitor to the medical wing. She moans softly in her sleep, mostly in discomfort from how she was feeling, Remy rubbing her arm in comfort. His eyes gaze down at her rosy cheeks that were usually very pale, light beads of sweat dotting her face while her brows were furrowed together.

Remy lets out a soft sigh, his mouth in a slight frown while his brows were slightly furrowed in concern. If the Sentinels hadn't ruined their day, he would've gotten her alone once they were back at the mansion and given her the pendant necklace she was gazing at in the window earlier. The small box sits in his duffle bag, deciding he would give it to her some other time.

He probably should take them to an emergency room for their injuries, especially if Rogue got worse. She wasn't letting him look at her eyes for any signs of a concussion, which also worried him. He knew he wasn't in the best shape either, but also knew Rogue was in worse shape from the sentinel firing into her room. He only wondered if the others were in rough shape too and if they were all okay. The mansion was torn up by the Sentinel, so it was impossible to know whether or not the other X-men went back there or not. Or if they all ever made it at all.

Remy shuts off the lamp, his red on black eyes seemingly glowing in the dark room as he gazed down at Rogue's sleeping form before he himself shut his eyes. He wakes up later that morning to find her still asleep and quivering with a fever as he gently pressed his hand to her forehead. He had to do something. Remy slowly gets up, grabbing a blanket that was in the closet and placing it over her other blankets, hoping it was enough. Then he runs a hand through his hair as he decided what to do next. He hated the idea of leaving her, incase she ever woke up some time soon, but he wasn't going to let her tag along with him. Cursing to himself, Remy got on his duster, glancing back to her sleeping form and placing a soft kiss in her hair. "'Ll be back, chère. Jus' hang tight." Remy whispers.

With that he left, heading out of the motel and to a nearby pharmacy. He grabbed a couple things that would help them both, including medicine until he could get them to an emergency room. His eyes glance up to a tv that was playing the news, the heading reading Sentinels on the prowl for mutants and mutant traffickers on the rise. He ignores it as his brain focused on getting back to Rogue, paying for everything and leaving as quickly as he could.

Rogue wakes up to an empty, quiet room, squinting as she looked around. She moans softly as she braced herself as her body quivered more. "Remy?" She calls out, noticing he wasn't anywhere in sight.

She braces herself again, trying to wrap herself in all the sheets to stay warm, Remy walking in and seeing her awake. He hears her let a moan of discomfort, quickly going over to her with the bags of supplies he got them. "Where'd.. ya go?" She asks.

"Had t' get us some t'ing's, mostly fo' y' t' help y' until we could get t' an emergency room." Remy looks at her as he crouched down to eye level with her.

Rogue winces as she braced herself again. "Ah'm.. s-so cold…" Rogue breathes out.

"Can y' sit up?" Remy asks, brows furrowed.

Rogue shakes her head, not wanting to move, everything was too painful from all the quaking her body was doing. Remy sighs softly, his eyes scanning her. "I got y' medicine. Lemme help y'."

Rogue was silent for a moment. She hated medicine, but she knew to make herself better she was going to have to take it. She lets Remy help her sit up, watching him dig out some liquid medicine from one of the bags. He opens it and pours some of the liquid into the little cup that was over the cap. Remy hands her the cup, watching her down it with a look of distaste. She hands him the cup back, Remy going to rinse it out as Rogue lays back against the pillows and sheets, groaning in discomfort. "Y' hungry?" Remy asks her as he walks back over to her, sitting on the bed.

Rogue shakes her head. "No, but thanks fer askin'."

Remy gives her a small smile, turning on the tv for them and pulling out some breakfast for himself. He gives Rogue the remote as he ate his food, letting her pick what they watched. She shook as she held the remote, her teeth clattering as she browsed the channels. Remy finishes his food, noticing her teeth lightly clattering. His hand went to her forehead again, still feeling hot underneath it. He made sure his boots were off, his jacket draped on his bed as he sat next to her. Rogue's body automatically went to his to keep warm, a sigh of relief coming out of her as she felt his body heat, her eyes closing in bliss. "Am I helpin' y'?" He grins as he asks softly.

"Ah hate ta say it but yer soah are helpin' a lot." Rogue rests her head onto his chest, feeling him put his arms around her.

It wouldn't be the first time she was intimately close with him. There were a couple times over the past couple months they had moments but she would soon run away from him to distance herself, but she couldn't do that right now as she was bedridden, plus he felt nice like her own personal heater. She wasn't going to deny that she felt attraction to the New Orleans resident, but she constantly reminded herself of her powers, especially after the Apocalypse incident.

Remy gazed down at her, ignoring the tv, seeing the blissful look on her face as she felt a little better with his body heat. He's always wanted to get close to her, trying to push her boundaries like no one else has. Rogue was watching the tv-or at least trying to as her body lightly quaked as the medicine was slowly working. Her eyes were lidded as she watched the tv, Remy relaxing more as he looked at her relaxed expression. She must've felt him gazing at her, as she turns her head up, only for Remy to snap his gaze to the tv. She blinks, knowing he was pretending to be interested in watching the tv. Rogue has started to let her guard down more ever since he came to the mansion, but never admitted out loud she had feelings for the Cajun. She couldn't when her powers loomed over her, fearing she would put him in a coma. And she knew he was fully into her, not even phased with her powers.

It reminded her when they were in New Orleans, the moments of closeness that they shared; the restaurant fight with Julien, him pulling her aside into an alleyway, her pushing him down a hill out of view of cameras and landing in a heap with him on top of her, him pulling her out of range of bullets and even when he grabbed her hand before he left. And now he's putting his arms around her, helping her feel better while she suffers from a fever and sharing a bed together for fucking sake. If she were with anyone else, she would just suffer in silence all by herself, but with Remy things were different.

There were a couple times during his stay that she made everyone worry about her but he took the initiative to ensure her wellbeing. During one danger room session, Scott pushed them too hard and she ended up collapsing and wake up with the session over and worried faces looking down at her. It was that day that Remy and Scott got into an argument about Scott pushing them too hard-the leader was forcing them to do back to back danger room sessions, most of the team able to get through it fine but for Rogue it took a bit of toll on her and it finally caught up to her. Remy told Scott to take the stick out of his ass and to start giving a shit about the team or he was going to get them all killed, then to everyones shock he took the two toned southerner to Beast to make sure she was okay. That was the first time she has seen him really angry. Sure he got angry with Julien back in New Orleans, but Scott must've pissed him off enough to make him explode at the leader like that. She was still dazed at what was going on and once they were out of the danger room, he softened up and asked if she was okay, to which she dazedly nodded.

Rogue felt a huge quiver, making her moan in discomfort and brace herself against Remy. "Y' okay?" He asks, feeling her gloved hand grip his shirt as she squints her eyes shut.

Rogue lets out a breath, groaning a bit as her face went into his chest. "Ah'm… fahne." She says softly. "When's this stupid medicine sapposed ta work?"

Remy gives her s sympathetic smile, rubbing her back. "Hopefully soon."

Rogue groans as her face was pressed into his chest. Remy uses his hand to smooth her hair, his red on black eyes looking at her. "Chère, can I see y' eyes?" He asks, his voice soft.

Rogue looks up at him, her emerald green eyes looking into his red eyes. He loved when she looked up at him with those eyes. His eyes scan hers, looking for any signs of a concussion. Seeing how they looked normal, his hand slowly cups her face, careful of her skin. Rogue couldn't tear her eyes from him. "Looks like y' don' got a concussion, which is good…" He says softly. "I was worried 'd have t' take y' t' de emergency room sooner if y' did."

Rogue just nods, then braced herself for another quake. She moans softly, her head lying on his shoulder. He comforts her and watched her fall asleep. Once she was asleep, he slowly gets up to get an idea of the area they were in so he can think of a plan. Rogue had woken up while he was gone, getting up shakily to go to the bathroom. The medicine was helping but she still felt like crap and she hated it. She washes her hands, then starts to walk back to the bed, but felt her shaky legs collapse beneath her, letting out a sound of discomfort from her wounds and the shivering. She laid on the floor, curled up as she shivered, feeling like she was paralyzed. Remy came back and found her on the floor, panic washing over his face. "Ah had ta go ta the bathroom." Rogue explained as he helped her sit up. "Couldn't make it back ta the bed…"

Remy picks her up with ease, carrying her back to the bed. "Heah, drink some water." He says as she laid her down then handed her a water bottle. "'Ll help."

Rogue drinks some water, sighing as it made her feel better. "Thanks." She gives him a small smile. She looks at him, her eyes looking at his face. "Ya don't have ta be helpin' meh, swamp rat."

Her voice had no annoyance in it when she said his nickname, her face relaxed, her guard down. Remy blinks, a corner of his mouth tugged up into a slight smile. "Y' t'ink I was jus' gon' leave y' alone?"

"Most people would. Yoah just.. different." Rogue rubs her arm. "Why do ya care so much?"

"Ain' it obvious?" Remy smirks a bit.

"Ta be honest, most people don't want ta get close ta meh." Rogue looks down, the shaking very light. "But.. evah since ya came ta the institute, ya haven't left meh alone."

"Maybe 's cause I like y'." Remy says softly as he got close to her, invading her personal space, but unlike the other times, she doesn't move away.

"There's plenty of othah gals that ya can have." Rogue looks away from him, her hand moving a strand of hair behind her ear. "Why have somethin' ya can't touch…."

Remy smiles sincerely, using his gloved finger to move her chin so she's looking at him again. "'S not all 'bout touch. An' I wouldn' want anyone else but y'."

Rogue could feel the heat in her cheeks now, pretty sure her cheeks were a pink or reddish color. She wasn't used to this. Sure when she had her silly crush on Scott she would act differently, but with Remy… He's able to make her blush and feel butterflies in her stomach like no one's ever made her feel. It was also the fact that he wasn't scared to get close to her, he liked getting up into her personal space. She was attracted to him, she'll admit, but she wouldn't admit it out loud as she knows she can't have him. But the fact that he's even trying, makes her fall harder and she was supposed to be The Rogue, the one who doesn't let her guard down or let anyone get close to her. She turns her head away from him again, but he brings it back so she's looking into his eyes. "Y-yeah raght." She scoffs, her lips pouting a bit.

Remy smirks, eyes full of mirth. "'S true. Y' stole dis t'iefs heart."

Rogue rolls her eyes, but couldn't help the small smile that formed. "Aren't ya sapposed ta be the thief heah?"

Remy chuckles. His eyes were back to scanning her face, as if memorizing the way she looked at the moment was important. Rogue looked back at him, curiously. The way she looked at him made his heart race, clearing his throat lightly. "Y' feelin' any bettah?" He asks.

"Kinda." Rogue shrugs. "Still not hungreh yet."

Remy moves a strand of hair from her face. "Maybe y' should rest some mo'. Restin' 's good fo' y'."

Rogue felt a yawn come up, yawning softly as he says this. She nods her head slowly. "Ah still don't understand why ya even lahke meh… Ah'm tha most untouchable gal there is." She says sleepily.

Remy smiles. "Jus' go t' sleep, chère."

Rogue grumbles a bit as she drifts off, nuzzling against him. "Ah'll nevah admit it… but… ah lahke ya too, swamp rat…"

Remy looks down at her, his smile growing as he lightly rubs her back. Rogue sleeps soundly against him, while he watched tv. He noticed some news footage about mutant trafficking, making a mental note to try to avoid traffickers as they travel. This was never an issue before in the past before he joined the X-men, but now that it was popping up more and more unexpectedly, it kinda worried him. The thought of someone taking Rogue from him and using her for their own personal gain or pleasure made his stomach curdle and his blood boil. Sure he used her when he kidnapped her and took her to New Orleans, but he wasn't using her like a trafficker would.

He still felt bad for what he did, but she had quickly forgiven him and didn't hold any grudges. Her team took a while to warm up to him, but eventually they saw him as one of their own, proving them wrong. Though there are times he and Scott don't see eye to eye, Remy always commenting on how he's got a stick shoved up his ass to which it had made Rogue laugh only to receive a glare for the leader.

Eventually, Remy took his eyes away from the tv and looked down at the sleeping Rogue in his arms. She looked a little better, the medicine most likely kicked in by now and giving her a peaceful rest. Gently, he moves a strand of hair from her face, careful not to wake her or touch her skin. If things were under different circumstances, he would be more relaxed, but because they are on the run at the moment he has to keep his guard up.

He does some more scouting and gets Rogue some food and drinks, sighing in relief she was still in bed when he got back, though she woke up as she heard him close the door. "Where'd ya go?" She asked sleepily.

"Jus' t' scout an' t' get y' some food. Y' need t' eat, chère." He answers as he walks over after taking his shoes and duster off.

Rogue sits up, putting one of the blankets fully around her body. She was still feeling like crap but at least the medicine was helping now. Shutting her eyes, then opening them seconds later, Rogue looks at what Remy had brought her, a small smile appearing on her lips. "Ah guess Ah could try ta eat now that the medicine is workin'. Thank ya, Remy."

Remy smiles at her and places a kiss on her gloved hand. "Y' welcome, chère."

Rogue slowly eats her food she was given, sipping on her water and a juice, too. Remy sat with her, glancing to the tv to catch glimpses of what was on. He had left the tv on for Rogue incase she woke up before he had returned. It kinda of unsettled him to see the headline of uprising mutant traffickers repetitively, knowing this was something entirely new they were dealing with. He noticed Rogue's nose scrunched up a bit, a frown on her face as she saw the headline. Deep down, she felt scared, but she wouldn't admit it. Remy, however, knew how she was feeling and he felt the same way. "How're we gonna avoid that?" She asks, softly.

Remy knew she was talking about the traffickers who were laughing and showing off some mutants they got on television, his hand gripping her a bit tighter. "I don' know. I guess carefully..."

Soon, night had fallen and the two drift off eventually, sleeping in each other's arms-Rogue mostly trying to get some warmth and comfort but also falling asleep while watching a movie that was on. Remy took a while to fall asleep, but eventually he dozed off. Morning light shines through the window, the two southerners cozied up in the bed as they slept. Rogue's eyes flutter open slowly, the light blinding her slightly as she sat up a bit. Her head was still pounding, but it wasn't as bad as it was the day prior. Rubbing her eyes, then peering down to the sleeping Cajun, Rogue noticed how peaceful he looked sleeping-a slight smile appearing on her lips.

Remy wakes up slowly, noticing it was just him in the bed. He sits up when he hears the bathroom door open, Rogue coming out of it with her hair wet. "Mornin' chère," Remy greets with a smile. "Couldn' ask me t' join y'?"

Rogue rolls her eyes, but smiles lightly. "Yoah askin' fer a death sentence."

"'D be worth it." Remy smirks at her.

Rogue tosses her towel at him, Remy catching it and getting up. He heads for the bathroom while Rogue brushed her hair and turned on the tv. Once Remy was done, he asked how she was feeling, a wave of relief hitting him when she told him she was feeling better than the day prior which prompted him to move them along so they weren't staying in the same location for too long. He figured he would move them a bit more south, but he also wanted to try and avoid the New Orleans area.

They get breakfast, then head to an ER to get any major wounds checked and looked at, Remy making up the story of an accident with his charm to which the nurse bought it. He waited for Rogue to be finished looked at, bouncing his knee in the chair he sat in anxiously. When she appeared he got up immediately walked over to her, asking if she was okay to which she gives him a comforting smile and nodding.

The two southerners get back to his parked motorcycle to take off, both unknowing where they would end up in, but glad to have each other.
