Chapter 6: Safety and Shelter

They finally hit shore hours later, the sky darkening as a storm was oncoming, Remy helping Rogue up after they had laid on a large wooden fragment of their boat for hours. They come across a neighborhood, finding themselves back in California but further down from where they were prior, Remy telling Rogue to stay put in an alleyway while he went and scouted the area. Rogue leans against the wall, eyes shut as she tried to relax, but she was still on edge from everything. Remy comes back and takes her hand, taking them down a couple blocks to a small hotel, the rain starting as they traveled. He gets them a room, taking them up to it and opening the door, then locking it after they enter.

Rogue lets out a soft moan of discomfort as she lays on the bed, Remy looking over to her to see her wincing in pain. "Where's it hurt?" He asks, softly.

She looks up at him, slightly biting her lip. "Mah back…"

"Y' want me t' take a look?" He asks.

Rogue thinks about it, then nods slowly. Remy helps her sit up, gently, watching her turn around and lift up her worn sweater to reveal some bruising, one going under her bralette she vu u wore. His brows furrow as he gently runs his fingers over the bruises, Rogue's fists clenching a pillow while her face buried in it as she didn't want to show how pink her cheeks were getting. Remy mumbles he'll be right back, getting up and leaving the room, Rogue lifting her up in confusion. He comes back with a bag of ice moments later, locking the door and making his way to her again. "Hopefully dis helps a bit." He carefully places the small bag of ice on her back, Rogue jolting a bit at the cold sensation, but then she relaxes as it started to help.

Rogue lets out a small sigh into the pillow, her body relaxing as she felt the ice cool her back. Remy smiles as he gazes at her. "Dat feel nice?" He asks.

"Mhm…"Rogue nods, mumbling into the pillow. "Real nahce…."

Remy lets her relax as he gets up and heads to the bathroom to take a shower. He stood there under the water staring at the white tiles as he was deep in thought. After washing himself and rinsing off, he steps out of the shower and dries himself off, knowing they'll have to get some new clothes at some point. He comes back out, fully clothed to find Rogue sleeping. Remy sits on the bed carefully and places his hand on her back, Rogue gasping awake and looking up at Remy. "Sorry, 's jus' me." Remy apologizes.

Rogue sighs, Remy gazing at her face. She winces as she starts to sit up after Remy took the slightly melted bag of ice off of her back. "Ah'm..gonna go take a showah." Rogue says, getting up from the bed and tugging her sweater down to cover up her exposed skin.

She goes into the bathroom and strips off her clothes, looking over her appearance in the mirror and frowning at the cuts and bruises all over her body. She gets into the hot shower, closing her eyes as she washed her hair. Her mind replays the scene that had taken places hours prior with Richter, making her jolt and fall down. She sits there with her knees pulled up to her chest as her wide eyes stared down at the shower floor, trying to steady her breathing.

Remy noticed she was in the shower for a while, deciding to check on her he knocks on the door to see if she would answer. "Rogue, y' okay?" He asks.

"Ah'm fahne.." He hears her sniff over the water.

"Y' don' sound fahne. Need m' help?" He asks, his brows furrowed.

When she didn't answer, he slowly enters, noticing her silhouette through the shower curtain sitting in the tub. The hot water was now slightly cooled, Rogue resting her head on her arms, trying to stop her sniffing. She hated when people saw her like this, she usually hides it behind her closed bedroom door away from prying eyes, but she wasn't home and she wasn't alone. Remy sticks his hand through the curtain slowly and turns off the water, worried for the two toned southerner. "Chère, 'm gon' give y' a towel." Remy says, his voice soft.

He grabs the other fresh towel from the rack, handing it to her through the curtain. Rogue wraps it around herself, her eyes still gazing down. Remy sits down next to the tub, waiting patiently for Rogue to show herself. A few moments later and she slowly opens the curtains, the towel wrapped around her body and her other hand rubbing her eye. "Hey, what's wrong?" Remy asks, noticing her puffy eyes.

"Ah'm fahne." Rogue says as she sat on the opposite side of the tub.

Remy makes a face, adjusting his position. "Y' clearly not. What happened? Y' flinch when I touch y'."

"Remy, please, ah'm fahne." Rogue sighs, looking away from him.

"Y' can tell me, Rogue. 'M not leavin' till y' tell me." He says sternly.

Rogue glances up to him, biting her lip slightly. "… That Richter guy… try gropin' meh… Guess he's done it ta some othah gals too from the way they cowered in fear of him…. And then he tried chokin' meh ta death until ya came."

Remy eyes widen slightly, furious she had to put up with that asshole but also upset that he should've been there for her. Noticing the look on his face, Rogue sits up a bit. "It's okay, ah'm fahne. I got him in the nose when he tried."

"Should've came fo' y' sooner." Remy comments.

Rogue looks at him, then steps out of the shower with the towel securely wrapped around her and sat on her knees in front of him. "We were both busy tryin' ta help the othah mutants escape. Plus, ya couldn't have known he was gonna attack meh."

Rogue surprises him with a hug, something she usually doesn't initiate, especially if her skin was exposed, but it didn't matter because they still had their collars on-no powers to interfere. Remy hugs her tightly, but was mindful of her injuries, staying like that for a while before Rogue said her legs were starting to fall asleep. He helps her up, her hand staying on the towel to keep it from falling-she felt her heart racing as she was aware she was completely naked underneath it and could expose herself if her towel were to fall down.

Remy's eyes scan over her face, his hands wrapped around her, but one moves to take some strands of wet hair out of her face. Her emerald eyes gaze up at his face, her lips slightly parted. He dips his head down slowly, his nose inches from hers, again. Rogue felt her breath hitch slightly, her eyes lidded as she wanted to kiss him, but she felt nervous as this would be her first kiss conscious. Remy leans in and places a soft kiss on her lips, Rogue gently kissing him back as one hand held her towel to her body still while her other hand was on his shoulder. They pull apart slightly, Rogue letting out a small, shaky breath as her body tingled while Remy panted lightly.

The sensation was enough for Rogue to pull him to her again, tugging him close to her as she kisses him again. Remy kisses her deeply, turning so he lightly pins her to the wall with one knee pressed into the wall a bit. Rogue moves her hands to his hair as she kisses him, feeling his body gently pressed to hers. "Mm!" Rogue lets out a soft moan as his hands were on her waist, feeling a shiver run up her spine.

They pull apart, again, both panting for air as they looked at each other with eyes lidded. Rogue's cheeks were tinted pink as she gazed up into Remy's eyes, his red on black eyes staring back at her in adoration. "Been wantin' t' do dat fo' a while…" Remy says lowly, while nipping her ear.

Rogue bites her lip and closes her eyes at the new sensation, her hands gripping his hair and shoulder slightly tighter. "Ah wish mah powahs didn't get in the way…" Rogue breathes out.

Remy lifts his head from her jaw and looks into her eyes. He gives her a small, comforting smile. "Dere's ways 'round it. Dat why y' nevah tried t' confess y' feelin's t' m'?"

"Yeah…" Rogue looks away from him, slightly embarrassed, but what she found more embarrassing was that she was still wearing her towel and still naked. "Uhm… Remy?"

"Hm?" He was looking at her affectionately.

"Ah'm still… naked. Ah should get dressed." Rogue says, her cheeks reddening as one hand held onto her towel again.

Remy blinks, then straightens. "Oh-right. Unless y' want me t' help y'?" He gives her a playful grin.

Rogue shoves him lightly. "Nope! Get outta heah!"

He chuckles, leaving her to get dressed. Rogue slides her back against the closed door and felt her lips, a soft smile appearing. She dries off and puts her clothes back on and walks out, finding the Cajun on the bed and playing with his cards. He looks up at her and pats the bed for her to sit on, Rogue taking a seat in front of him and watching him with his cards. "Y' wanna play a game?" He asks as he held up a card between his fingers.

"Soah," Rogue smiles lightly. "Maybe Ah'll beat ya at it."

"Like t' see y' try." Remy grins at her as he shuffles his cards.

They played for a couple hours, Rogue making faces as she scans over her cards while Remy kept a good pokerface, but his eyes were filled with amusement whenever he glanced up to Rogue's face. "Ah give up! Ah'm nevah gonna win against ya." Rogue huffs as she placed her cards face down after losing for the third time.

"I woulda let y' win." Remy smirks.

"Uh huh, soah." Rogue crosses her arms.

"Aw, y' don' believe m' cher?" Remy pouts.

"Nope." Rogue sticks her tongue out at him and turns herself away from him.

Remy grins playfully, getting up to put his arms around her from behind. "Aw, c'mon chère, one mo' game? 'Ll make it easy on y'."

Rogue smirks. "Oh yeah?"

"Oui."

"Ya promise?"

"…"

"Remy, ya promise??"

"Mmmaybe."

Rogue shoves him down on the bed and straddles him, feeling him vibrate a bit as he chuckles. "Yer no fun Swamp rat!" Rogue playfully chides him.

"'M pretty soah 'm fun." Remy grins as he looks up at her. "'S y' dat seems t' be de one who 's no fun."

"Ah can be fun! You take that back!" Rogue gapes at him with a small laugh.

"Non."

"Fahne, ya wanna see fun?" Rogue grabs a pillow, but before she could whack him with it, Remy grabs it and yanks it from her.

His fast reflexes allowed him to grab her and flip her over so he was straddling her. The shock on her face made him grin wider as he gazes down at her tinted cheeks. "I don' t'ink 've evah seen y' blush dis much Roguey." He teases.

Rogue purses her lips, but this only made him chuckle in amusement. "Fahne, ah'll admit it, ya win," She rolls her eyes, then smirks. "But ah think ya cheated."

Remy had her arms pinned down on either side of her head, feigning being hurt. "I 'm no cheater! Y' take dat back, chère."

"Or what, swamp rat?" Rogue's smile grew.

Remy's expression changes, almost mischievous as he leans down to her ear. "Y' really want t' know dat one?"

Rogue felt her breath hitch as his voice was silky and low in her ear. "F-fahne! Ah take it back!" She closes her eyes, then felt him gently let go of her arms.

"See dat wasn't so difficult." Remy playfully grins as he sits back against his pillow.

The storm crackled outside the hotel, the two looking over to see how bad it was, noticing the wind blowing hard and the rain splattering on the window like a carwash. Rogue wraps her arms around herself, never liking serious storms like this, they always made her nervous as a kid. The power suddenly shuts off, Remy charging up a card for a quick light. "Ah think we should try ta sleep…" Rogue comments as she looks in his direction.

"Dat's if we can wit' dis storm goin' on." Remy nods to the window.

Rogue grabs her pillow, fluffing it and laying it down. Remy puts his cards off to the side on the nightside table, taking the charge away from the one he held and setting it down. He gets settled into bed, hearing Rogue roll over. "Remy…" She says softly.

"Hm?" He looks in her direction.

"Are… are ya.. in love with meh?" Rogue asks, hesitantly.

It was much easier for her to say it with the lights out so she couldn't see his face, but she could still see his red eyes slightly glowing in the dark. He was surprised by her question, but he smiled. "Course I 'm. 'Ave been fo' a while now." Remy's hand finds hers in the dark, feeling her hand squeeze his.

"Ah haven't realleh…had much experience with relationships, but… ah want ta be with ya…" Rogue says, shyly.

"Heh. Well, y' jus' beat m' t' it, cause I want y' wit' m' t'." Remy smiles affectionately, getting closer to her. "An' we can take t'ings at y' own pace if y' like."

Rogue smiles, pulling him towards her and placing a kiss on his cheek. "Alright, shugah."

Remy nuzzles into her neck, Rogue glad the power dampening collar was on a she wouldn't want her powers ruining the moment. The storms roars outside, but the two southerners were engulfed in each others arms comfortably and fell asleep.

As the night carried on, Rogue dreamt she was running in her dream, panting frantically as her legs ran as fast as they could away from the oncoming Sentinel and traffickers. The running was of no use as they engulfed her, causing Rogue to sit up in a panic as the thunder boomed loudly, her heart racing as she pants with sweat dripping down her body. She hated how she constantly has nightmares, wishing she could sleep peacefully but instead she has to experience past memories from those that she absorbed.

Remy woke up, confused as to why Rogue was up. He hears her breathing coming out fast, sitting his body up to see if she was fine. "Chère?" Remy gently places a hand on her arm.

Rogue snaps her head towards Remy, the lightning igniting the room. He could see the terrified look on her face as tears streamed her cheeks, making him frown. "Y' 'ave anot'er nightmare?"

Rogue sniffs, nodding. "Yeah, sorreh. Ah didn't mean ta wake ya up. Ah hate these stupid naghtmares."

"'S okay, don' bot'er m' one bit." Remy gives her a sympathetic look as he places his chin on her right shoulder while his arms wrap around her frame.

Rogue leans back in his arms and into his chest, wiping her face with her sweaters sleeve. Remy held her to him, whispering soothing things to her. The storm rages still, lighting up the room every now and then, Remy's red on black eyes staring down at Rogue who was staring off into the distance with lidded emerald eyes while her hand gripped his shirt. She lets out a soft yawn, feeling sleep wanting to take back over. Remy rubbed her back soothingly, noticing she was starting to fall back asleep, his body slowly lying back with her partially on top of him.

Rogue was completely back to sleep, her cheek lying on Remy's chest where his heart was beating. Remy plays with a strand of her hair gently, a small smile on his lips. "Dors bien mon couer" He whispers, then he himself falls back asleep, the storm slowly dying down to a light drizzle.

(Sleep well my heart)
