Chapter 9: Close call
The morning sun shines through the curtains of the room, the pair snuggled up together sleeping soundly. It was nice to get a proper good nights rest as their sleeping arrangements were less than pleasant previous. Remy wakes up, stretching a bit as he does, then looks down at Rogue who was still sleeping soundly. She looked peaceful as she slept, her lips slightly parted. His hand gently moves a stray strand of hair from her face, a small smile on his lips. He knew they were going to have to get up soon and leave for the road, but he wanted to remain in this moment for a little longer.
Rogue eventually wakes up, yawning softly and rubbing her eyes. Her eyes gaze up to find Remy awake, a light smile on her lips. "Mornin' mon amour." Remy greets, leaning down and kissing her.
Rogue kisses back happily. "Mornin' shugah. How long ya been up?"
"Fo' a while. Didn' want t' wake y' cause y' looked s' peaceful." Remy plays with her hair.
Rogue smiles. She felt much happier than she has in a while and Remy can sense it. They lay in bed for a couple more minutes, not wanting to get up and get ready, but both knew they had to leave the area before it became too dangerous for them. Rogue gets up from the bed, still wobbly but she managed to make it to the bathroom to refresh. They get dressed, then pack up, Remy kissing her deeply before they head out of the room to the car they had. Rogue sits in the passenger seat, Remy putting their stuff in the back, then gets in the front seat. "Looks like we got t' get gas." He looks at the gas meter as he starts up the car.
"You get the gas, ah'll get us coffee and food." Rogue says, looking at him.
"Fine by m'." Remy grins.
They find a gas station, Rogue getting out to go inside. Remy had given her cash for the coffee and food, her planting a kiss on his cheek before she had went inside. She goes right for the coffee inside first, then she gets them something for breakfast, grabbing a few snacks for the road, too. The gas station shop had a tv playing the news, Rogue ignoring it as she waited in line. Her sweater covered up the collar a bit, but she didn't have any concealer for her hickeys, trying her best to have her hair cover them up. She sets her stuff down on the counter, having put the travel cups of coffee in a carrier to make it easier for herself.
Her eyes glance around, noticing mutant hate signs behind the counter, making her gulp a bit. She kept her gaze down, the cashier telling her the total, her gloved hand giving him the money. The cashier glanced at her, noticing the collar poking out from the collar of her sweater, his eyes narrowing as he put the money in. "Say, ya wouldn't happen to be one of dem muties on the run?" He grabs her wrists when he handed her the receipt.
Rogue snaps her head up, an almost deer in headlights look on her face. "Uh'm, no." She quickly says.
The cashier narrows his eyes at her. "I think ya are. Looks like one of dem trafficker collars."
"Let go of meh!" Rogue growls, yanking her hand away from him and grabbing her stuff quickly-shoving her snacks in her backpack.
She heads for the door, but goes down an isle when she spots two familiar faces heading for the front door. "Shit." She curses under her breath, panic filling her as she ducked in an isle to avoid being spotted by Richter and Marcus.
The two men go up to the counter, asking the cashier if they have seen any mutants with power dampening collars come through. Rogue peeks around the isle corner, her eyes then going to the door to see she had a clear shot of making it. "Yeah. I have one hiding in here right now." The cashier nods.
"What do they look like?" Marcus asks.
"It was a girl, she had white streaks in her hair." The cashier scratches his head as he spoke.
Richter grins. "Oh, really?"
Rogue bites her lip as she snuck towards the door, hoping she wasn't spotted. While she was trying to find a way out, Remy grew concerned as he had saw her waiting in line, turning his back to look at the pump meter. The car was filled, but as he turned to look into the shop again he noticed two familiar guys walk inside, his heart dropped. "Merde." He curses under his breath.
Marcus and Richter go up and down the isles, looking around and moving people aside to see if they were also mutants, but no luck. Rogue makes a beeline for the door, but yelps when a hand grabbed her from behind. "Well, we meet again, gorgeous." Richter grins.
"Let go of meh!" Rogue growls, kicking him, but he tosses her to the ground, making her spill the coffee.
Marcus walks over, thanking the cashier. "Looks like we got her all alone." Marcus comments.
"Don't be so sure. Her fucking boyfriend is probably close by. When I get my hands on him…" Richter growls.
Rogue kicks Richter in the knee, making him shout out in pain. Marcus grabs her roughly, Rogue throwing punches and more kicks, getting Marcus in the groin. She bolts for the door, running out of the shop, but Richter pounces on her, causing her to hit the ground. "Oh no you don't!" He growls.
Rogue struggles, fear in her eyes. He gazes at her seeing some of the hickeys on her. "Seems you're tainted but you'll still be fine for someone. You muties are the problem on this earth-making more of you." Richter sneers at her.
Rogue spits in his face, trying to get her arms freed from his hands. Richter glares, ready to strike her, but yells out as he gets knocked off her. Remy pulls Rogue up, holding her close to him. "Don' fucking touch 'er." He snarls, his eyes sending a death glare filled with rage to the fallen man.
"You again!" Richter growls.
"Rogue, we gotta go." Remy says lowly, urging her towards the car.
Marcus hobbles out of the shop, wincing in pain. Richter starts to run after them, but Remy turns and sends a punch to him causing him to stumble back. He quickly gets in the drivers seat while Rogue buckles up, feeling a panic attack building up. Richter rolls in pain on the ground, Remy speeding out of the gas station and towards the highway. Rogue hugs her backpack tightly to her chest, her breathing quickened as she got flashbacks. Remy glanced over to notice, feeling his gut churning. "Rogue, y' okay?" He asks, his voice soft.
Rogue shuts her eyes, nodding. He frowns, one hand reaching out to hold one of hers. She squeezes his hand as she tried to relax, staying silent for most of the drive as he drove them through Odessa, Texas to get to Houston. They stopped for coffee once they were out of Odessa, Rogue taking hers silently with a smile. They took a break to eat the food she bought, Remy checking on Rogue once she finished and pulling her to him for a hug, which made her melt and let out a few sobs. "'S okay, I got y'." Remy whispers, kissing her head as he gripped her in a tight embrace.
Rogue nestles herself into him as he hugged her, her hands gripping him. They stay in an embrace for a little longer, then Remy pulls back to look at her and wipe some tears with his thumbs as he cups her face. "Y' okay?" He asks softly.
Rogue nods, sniffing. He hands her a few napkins so she could blow her nose. "Ah'm okay." She says softly.
'Lright." He sighs softly in relief, kissing her lips gently.
Rogue kisses him back, then they rest their foreheads against each other. Remy caresses her cheek. "Gotta keep drivin'." He says softly.
Rogue nods, both buckling back up. Remy starts the car and starts driving again. They reach Houston later, finding a motel to stop at for the night and a restaurant across the road. They check in, putting their stuff in their room, then Remy takes them out for a late dinner. They eat, then exit the restaurant, hoping their evening was calm, but they were wrong.
The ground shakes as a sentinel lands by down the road, Rogue's eyes widening in terror. The sentinel starts walking towards their area, Remy having them duck against the building where it concealed them. Rogue felt her breathing quicken again, hearing the sentinel look around for any mutant life. Remy holds his hand across her mouth as he listened, holding her close to him. The sentinel starts to leave their area, Remy rushes them across the street to their motel, getting inside and getting to their room.
Rogue tries to calm her breathing again, hating how she was feeling like this. Remy guides her to the bed, pulling her into him as he wrapped his arms around her tightly. He was a little shaken up, but not as bad as she was. He rubs her back, his face buried in her neck as she buries her face into his chest.
Remy sighs, kissing her shoulder gently. "Why don' we take a shower?" He offers, his voice soft.
"Okay." Rogue nods, her voice just as soft.
He helps her up, leading her to the bathroom, giving her a loving smile. She smiles at him a little, both helping with taking each other's clothes off. Remy turns the shower on, letting it warm up then pulling her into it gently. Rogue hugs him tightly as they stood under the water, Remy placing a kiss on her dampening head. Eventually they started to wash themselves, Rogue much shorter than him to get his hair but he just chuckles and bends down a bit for her, returning the favor to her. They get out and get dried off, Rogue wrapping her towel around herself as she brushed her wet hair. Remy uses his towel to dry his hair, a playful smirk appearing in his face as he scoops Rogue up bridal style when she was done.
Rogue lets out a surprised squeak as he did this, plopping onto the bed once he took them out of the bathroom. Remy grins at her pouted face, letting out a laugh. "S' funny t' 'ear y' make dat sound, Roguey."
"Ya coulda slipped an' dropped meh or somethin'." Rogue tried to sound upset but really she happy he was cheering her up.
"I don' know, 'm pretty good on m' feet." Remy gives her an amused smirk.
Rogue takes her towel off, chucking it at him, then swiftly gets under the sheets. She chuckles in her own amusement, Remy tossing her towel off to the side of the room. He joins her, pulling her close to him while his fingers combed through her hair. "How long should we stay heah fer?" Rogue asks, her eyes gazing up into his.
"Don' know… but if it becomes t' dangerous t' stay heah, we're gon' hafta leave de area." Remy cups her cheek as he looked at her.
Rogue leans into his touch, closing her eyes. "Ah just want ta stay somewhere safe fer at least a couple days or moah."
Remy frowns. "I know…" He knew she wanted a safe place for them, but it seems to be harder to find lately.
There was only one place he could think of that they would be safe for a short while until a near issue arose. But he refuses to bring it up. He doesn't want to step foot back there again. Not when it feels like he just left, too. Eventually, he figured their path might lead them there anyway, one way or another and he was not too happy with it. Rogue must've knew he was in deep thought, cause she was looking at him a little worried. "What's wrong shugah?" She asks.
"Jus' t'inkin'…" Remy snaps out of his thoughts.
"'Bout what?"
"'Bout where we should go next."
"Oh. Well…. What if we went ta Naw 'Leans?" She asks.
"Non. 'S not safe." Remy shakes his head.
"No where is safe, but we maght have a bettah chance there than anyone else cause ya got family down there." Rogue frowns, her brows furrowed.
Remy sighs. "Feels like I jus' left dere… An' I don' wan' y' gettin' int' any guild business-knowin' m' "fat'er" would try anyt'in' t' get y' t' use y' powahs fo' 'is own gain."
"Ah don't know if he'll even know how ta get these stupid things off of us." Rogue tugs at her collar, a little annoyed at it but she enjoyed their skin to skin contact time together.
"Probably not but he might know someone…" Remy thinks.
"So? Are we drivin' ta Naw 'Leans?" Rogue questions.
Remy grumbles under his breath, feeling like he is going to regret taking them there. "Guess we got no choice now."
Rogue smiles sweetly at him. "Let's just stay heah until we feel lahke leavin'."
Remy kisses her head as his hands roamed her body. "Dat Richter guy didn' touch y' in any way earlier, right?"
Rogue shakes her head. "Not this tahme."
He sighs in relief softly, bury his face into the crook of her neck. "Good. A t'ief nevah shares what's deres."
Rogue smiles lightly, a soft chuckle coming from her. "Oh realleh?"
"Oui, lease dat's jus' m'." Remy grins at her. "M' not one fo' sharin' what's mine."
Rogue places a kiss on his cheek with a small chuckle. Remy nestles back into the crook of her neck. They stay like that for a while, basking in each others embrace as they felt safe for the time being. The night was peaceful and still, the sky clear full of stars as they try to forget what happened earlier. Rogue looks at Remy, her hand playing with his hair a bit. "Remy? When did ya fall in love with meh?" She looked at him with curiosity in her eyes.
Remy gives her a genuine smile, his finger going under her chin. "'D say de first day I met y'. So fierce an' belle. Runnin' int' y' was probably de best t'ing dat happened dat day. Jus' couldn' get y' outta m' mind even if I had t' do t'ings fo' Magneto. I jus' wanted t' know mo' 'bout y'."
Rogue looks at him with a soft smile. "Realleh?"
"Realleh. 'D do it all again if I could." Remy grins.
"Ya wouldn't do anythin' differently?"
"Non. Wouldn' change a t'ing."
"Even when ya took meh ta Naw 'Leans?"
"Well, dat I would change." Remy purses his lips. "I wouldn' lie t' y' and use y', 'd tell y' de truth from de beginnin'."
Rogue chuckles. "It's fahne, Cajun. Still fell in love with ya eithah way."
Remy grins, kissing her deeply. "I t'ink we should leave t'morrow. I don' feel comfortable stayin' heah fo' t' long especially aftah what 'appened earlier. Dey got some trackers on us an' we gotta put as much distant between us and dem as possible."
"That's fahne. Just wake meh up when we gotta leave an' get readeh if Ah'm not awake alreadeh." Rogue smiles.
"Don' worry, I will." Remy chuckles, kissing her again.
Rogue snuggles up to him, her arms around him while he had his around her. They fall asleep in each other's arms, sleeping soundly. Later that night, Remy was having a nightmare, his dream depicting him and Rogue running, but she gets caught by Richter while Remy felt chains wrap around him. Richter laughs manically as he held her to him, Rogue screaming for him as he tosses her into a cage with barely anything clothes on. He tries to break the chains in his dream or use his powers but he was wearing the collar still, his voice yelling out for Rogue as she got further and further away from him. Richter stands over him with a smirk, using his foot to kick him.
Remy wakes up in a jolt, rubbing his face and sighing. Rogue wakes up tiredly, wondering what happened. "Remy…? Ya okay?" She asks, her voice full of sleep.
Remy lets out a breath, looking down at her. He saw the concerned look in her eyes as she looked up at him, relief hitting him. He pulls her close to him and kisses her thoroughly. "Jus' a nightmare." Remy sighs as he pulls back slightly.
"What happened?" Rogue whispers.
"I don' want t' talk 'bout it. I jus' wanna enjoy holdin' y'."
"That's okay. Nothin' will take meh away from ya, okay? Plus ah know ya'd fahnd a way ta come aftah meh."
Remy smiles. "Y' right. I wouldn' give up lookin' fo' y'. 'D travel 'round de earth t' find y'."
Rogue smiles, kissing him deeply. "C'mere shugah."
She pulls him down on her, holding him to her. Remy lays his head on her chest, his arms wrapped around her again. She rubs his back soothingly, pressing kisses to his hair as they fell back asleep.
A/N: It's nice to see Rogue comfort Remy. He usually doesn't let things get to him but it's still nice to see him get the same comfort from Rogue that she gets from him. Love the ROMY fluff. But also some angst. Anyway! They're heading to New Orleans, so till next time! Let me know if you guys are enjoying the story! I appreciate the reviews! And check out my other stories! Just uploaded a KIOTR chapter to X-men Evolution: A Different Evolution; A What If.
