Chapter 33:

The Kantonian Gym

Location: Aether Paradise

"Thank you for your company," Wicke said as we were escorted back to a boat. "And… I don't know what that thing was, but Lusamine has been up all night studying it with the Ultra Recon Squad."

"I wish I knew more. Roto."

Wicke smiled. "Some parting gifts. For you Hau, some Malasadas." Wicke gave Hau a bag full of the tasty treats.

"Thanks!" Hau replied. "We'll share these on our way to the next destination!"

"And for you Elliott," Wicke said. "TM29. It contains Psychic." She handed me a TM.

"Amazzzing! Roto! It hazz a chanzze of lowering Sp. Defenzze! Zzt zzt!"

I smiled. "Thanks!" All of a sudden, I had that sudden urge to leave, considering the context of what might be happening. "We need to head to Ula'ula Island now."

"Have fun!" Wicke said. "Good luck with your Trials!"

Aether Paradise – Ula'ula Island

"You're gonna love Ula'ula Island!" Hau said whilst munching away on his Malasadas. "It's the biggest island in Alola and has loads of cool Pokémon!"

I got up the map on Rotom Dex. "Where is it we're docking?"

"Malie City," Hau said through eating (which wasn't very polite, but he was excited). "It was built by people originally from Johto. It's been called 'The Tropical Ecruteak.'"

We started seeing the city come into view, with ancient buildings that would fit right in with many of Johto's settlements. "Alola Ula'ula! Roto!" Rotom Dex shouted. "Look out, we're coming! Zzt zzt!"

"Yeah…" I said. All the while though I was thinking about that Ultra Beast and Lusamine's reaction.

Location: Malie City

We got off the boat and onto dry land. The architecture was very clearly inspired by the ancient people of Johto with wooden rooves, archways with lanterns on them and a large pagoda that watched over the settlement.

"It feels like I've stepped back in time," I said. "This place is amazing!"

"You've not seen the half of it!" Hau told me. "But before we have an explore…" Hau held up a Pokéball. "What do ya say?"

"Great idea! Roto! Do it Elliott!"

I smiled. "You're on!"

Elliott Vs. Hau

"I'm starting with Crabrawler!" Hau said.

"And I'm using Misdreavus!" I shouted. Clearly, I had the advantage. Especially when Misdreavus fired a pink beam at Crabrawler. "Woah! What was that?"

"Zzt! It'zz Psybeam! Roto! A Psychic Type move!"

Crabrawler was hit hard. "Don't get too cocky! Crabrawler, Payback!" Remembering the last hit, Crabrawler punched Misdreavus. It almost knocked it out.

"A Dark Type move aye?" I said. "Someone's gotten stronger! Misdreavus, Psybeam!" Misdreavus fired another Psybeam at Crabrawler, finishing it off.

"Thanks," Hau said. He recalled Crabrawler. "Okay Vaporeon, go!" Out came his Eeveelution.

"Misdreavus, this will be the last move you can get in so let's make it count! Use Psybeam!" Misdreavus fired a beam at Vaporeon.

"Come back with Water Pulse!" Vaporeon fired a pulse of water at Misdreavus. It was down.

"Great one," I told Misdreavus, recalling it. "Okay Snorlax, you're next!" From floaty to fatty, Snorlax was sent out.

"Okay Vaporeon, Aurora Beam!" Vaporeon shot a colourful beam at Snorlax for little damage.

"Use Body Slam!" Snorlax jumped onto Vaporeon. It became paralyzed upon impact. "Do it again!" Snorlax landed once more on Vaporeon.

"Use Water Pulse!" Vaporeon fired a pulse of water at Snorlax. It shrugged it off.

"Keep it up with the Body Slam!" Snorlax landed on Vaporeon once more, this time landing a Critica; Hit. Vaporeon was finished.

"Great job Vaporeon. Okay, next is Raichu!" Hau's Raichu was not like the Raichu I was used to seeing back in Kanto. It was orange and its lightning bolt tail was bigger. In fact, Raichu was using it as a surfboard in the air.

It focuses psychic energy into its tail and rides it like it's surfing. Another name for this Pokémon is "hodad."

"Even Raichu gets one aye? Show me what ya got!"

"Gladly!" Hau shouted. "Raichu, Thunderbolt!" Raichu shot a bolt of lightning at Snorlax. Snorlax became paralyzed and couldn't move the next turn. "And now Psychic!" Raichu lifted up Snorlax telekinetically and slammed it down. Snorlax was almost finished.

"Now use Rest!" Snorlax went to sleep. Its health recovered and its paralysis healed, but it was also a sitting Psyduck for two turns.

"Raichu, Psychic!" Raichu slammed down Snorlax again, this time lowering its Sp. Defense. "And again!" Raichu did another telekinetic slam. Finally, Snorlax woke up! "Raichu, Thunderbolt!" Raichu shocked Snorlax once more, doing a bit more damage to it because of the Sp. Defense drop.

"Use Body Slam!" Snorlax landed on Raichu.

"And now Psychic!" Raichu finished off Snorlax with a Psychic blast.

"Great job," I told Snorlax. "Torracat, I choose you!" Out came my partner.

"Raichu, Psychic!" Raichu blasted Torracat with Psychic power.

"Use Bite!" Torracat bit down on Raichu, knocking it out.

"Nice one. Next up, Tauros!" Out came the brown Normal Type.

"Breaktime I think," I told Torracat. "Go Hariyama!" Now I had the advantage.

"Tauros, Horn Attack!" Tauros jabbed Hariyama with its horn.

"Ready?" I asked Hariyama. We put our hands out. "Prepare for a punch up of a lifetime. ALL OUT PUMMELING!" We punched multiple times, then Hariyama let out a flurry of punches to Tauros. One last wallop finished Tauros.

"Z-move already aye? Interesting Dartrix, go!" Out came Hau's partner.

"Come back," I told Hariyama. "Go Trumbeak!" I decided to switch things up a bit this time.

"Well, you may have the Type advantage, but I have the Z-move!" He said that as if I didn't have it to. (I just couldn't utilize it). Hau put his hands out in front and Dartrix did the same with its wings. "The power of the forest in our hearts… BLOOM DOOM!" Dartrix created an entire meadow. Then, a flower bloomed underneath Trumbeak. It engulfed Trumbeak then exploded.

"You okay?" Trumbeak was. "Great! Now use Pluck!" Trumbeak stabbed Dartrix with its beak. It was a Super Effective Critical Hit! Dartrix was down!

"An Ula'ula victory! Roto!"

"A great start!" I told Trumbeak. "Now let's keep battling like this through Ula'ula!"

Trumbeak looked back at me, and then… started to glow! "Trumbeak izz evolving! Roto!"

When Trumbeak had finished, it had a long multicoloured beak and had a bigger body.

When it battles, its beak heats up. The temperature can easily exceed 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100֯), causing severe burns when it hits.

"You know," Hau said. "The beak heating up is a new move called Beak Blast."

"Really?" I said. "Well, we'll have to try that when the time comes!" Toucannon squawked happily. "Okay, let's have a look around!"

"I'm gonna check out the gardens!" Hau said.

"I'm going to check out the other places," I said. "But first, I need to heal at the Pokémon Center."

After healing, I went into the city with Rotom Dex where people were selling art, food and clothing.

"Look at all this," I said. I passed by a shop selling water colour paintings of the Johto region. The shops after that were selling kimonos and after that, Slowpoke Tails. I held Slowpoke's Pokéball tightly as I went by.

"Hey! Roto! Check thizz out!" I ran over to Rotom Dex to see… a Gym. "Hey, this is a Gym!" I said. "Look, it even has the Gym logo on it!"

"But why?" Rotom Dex asked. "I thought the Alola region doezzn't have an ezztablished League. Roto."

"This must have been what Hau was talking about," I said. "Alola's first, albeit unofficial, Gym. Is it open yet?"

Coming out from the doors was a man wearing entirely red. His hair was red and spiky, and he had a guitar case in his right hand. "Yo! You here for a battle?"

"Sure!" I said. "I mean… I forgot this was here honestly."

"Well, you won't be forgetting our battle! My name…" He flung open his guitar case. "Is Ryu-" He strummed it, but it didn't make much of noise.

"Don't you need an amplifier?" I asked.

"Erm… yeah," he said, a bit embarrassed. "Name's Ryuki, I'm the Gym Leader here. Meet me inside."

"Sounds fun!" I said. "What a great way to get some training in!"

Location: Malie Kantonian Gym

"Wow!" I said. "It's like an actual Gym in Kanto." The floor was yellow, and it had multiple metal poles coming up from the floor. The Trainers were Beauties with a single Black Belt and Ryuki.

"Yo, champ in the making!" said a man. "I'm Clyde the Gym Guide. Now there is now puzzle here as we're still implementing it, but all you need to do is defeat all the Gym Trainers and then battle our Gym Leader Ryuki! Good luck!"

"Soundzz eazzy, but I hope it'zz not! Roto!"

I went up to the first Beauty. "Well look at you! Think you can take me on?"

"Go Smoochum!" Adriana shouted, sending out a small Pokémon that was pink and yellow with puffy lips.

Highly perceptive sensors, Smoochum's lips are kept moist by its daily application of tree sap.

"And I'm using Torracat!" I shouted. "Use Fire Fang!" Torracat chomped down onto Smoochum with its fiery fangs.

"Use Heart Stamp!" Smoochum went up to Torracat and kissed it on the cheek.

"Use one more Fire Fang!" Torracat finished off Smoochum.

"Okay, I can't take you on!"

I went over to the next Trainer. (Yeah, I was getting through this quickly).

"Prepare for the Flair of Gym Trainer Blair!"

Elliott Vs. Kantonian Gym Blair

"Give it a try Cutiefly!" shouted Blair, sending out a Bug Type.

"Come out again Torracat!" I shouted. "Fire Fang!" Torracat chomped down on Cutiefly, almost dealing with it in one go.

"Call the fuzz, use Bug Buzz!" Cutiefly flapped its wings sending out some green sound waves that hit Torracat for not much.

"One more Fire Fang!" Torracat finished off Cutiefly with one last Fire Type move.

"Oh, I lost and I've run out of rhymes!"

Onto the next Trainer, this time the Black Belt.

"He he, this Gym is full of… wait that sounds creepy."

Elliott Vs. Kantonian Gym Roshi

"Toucannon, go!" I shouted.

"And I'm using Machoke!" Out came a grey-muscly Pokémon with black pants and a belt.

Machoke (ゴーリキー)

It willingly assists with hard labour because it knows the work is good training for its muscles.

Machop -Lv 28- Machoke

"Ready Trumbeak?" Toucannon's beak started heating up.

"Use Vital Throw!" Machoke grabbed Toucannon and threw it. However, it grabbed its hot beak and got burned.

"Now's our chance! Beak Blast!" Toucannon let out a blast from its beak that hit Machoke, dealing with it in one go.

"My grandfather really liked the Gym in Celadon for some reason…"

I was making great progress in this Gym and getting some good training in at the same time. I went up to the next Trainer.

"My Pokémon is just the cutest!"

Elliott Vs. Kantonian Gym Lee

"Minccino, go!" Out came a fluffy-white Pokémon with a long tail and large ears.

A clean freak that will not allow even the slightest mess, it uses its tail like a mop to thoroughly clean any and all filth.

"Go Slowpoke!" I shouted.

"Minccino, Swift!" Minccino fired stars at Slowpoke.

"Now use Disable!" Slowpoke stared at Minccino, disabling Swift.

"Tail Slap!" Minccino hit Slowpoke with its tail a few times. In response, Slowpoke opened its mouth to create a ball of water.

"A new move!" Rotom Dex shouted. "It'zz Water Pulse! Roto!" Slowpoke fired the water at Minccino, hitting it. It became confused upon impact.

"No Minccino! Use Tail Slap again!" Minccino hit itself instead.

"Let's use one more Water Pulse!" Slowpoke hit Minccino with one last blast of water.

"My Pokémon may be the cutest, but they aren't the strongest!"

One to go, so I went up to the final Trainer.

"Let's do this!"

Elliott Vs. Kantonian Gym Dallas

"Torracat, go!" I shouted.

"And I choose Fomantis!" Dallas responded.

"Use Fire Fang!" Torracat attacked Fomantis with its fiery teeth, doing a lot to it.

"Use Leaf Blade!" Fomantis' sickle hands started to glow, and it sliced Torracat.

"One more Fire Fang!" That was the move that finished it.

"Well, that didn't go too well."

With all the Trainers now beaten, it was time to take down Ryuki. Immediately, I heard the riff of a guitar.

"YEAH!" Ryuki shouted into a microphone. Everyone covered their ears. "It's time for a battle!"

Ryuki ran up and skidded over. "Erm… okay!" I said. "Let's do this!"

Elliott Vs. Gym Leader Ryuki

"Go Drampa! Yeah!" Ryuki shouted, sending out a blue Pokémon with a long neck and white fur.

Drampa (ジジーロン)

It appears in town and plays with the children. Drampa will protect kids when they're in danger, so their moms don't have to worry.

Drampa has no known evolutions.

"What a nice Pokémon," I said. "I bet it's strong to! Go Torracat!" I knew a Fire Type wouldn't do well against a Dragon Type, but that's why I had Double Kick for Drampa. "Double Kick!" Torracat kicked Drampa twice for Super Effective damage.

"Dragon Breath yeah!" Drampa breathed purple energy at Torracat. When it hit, Torracat was paralyzed. It couldn't move the next turn either. "We're rockin it now! Dragon Breath again!" Drampa once again used the move, knocking out Torracat.

"I'm not finished. Go Hariyama!" Slow but steady would need to win the race for this one.

"Dragon Breath!" Drampa used its Dragon Type move again, but it missed.

"Use Vital Throw!" Hariyama took Drampa and threw it for lots of damage. Drampa was down.

"Hold up, this isn't the end! Gabite, you're up! Yeah!" Next up was a blue Pokémon with a red belly. It had fins on its back and arms.

It sheds its skin and gradually grows larger. Its scales can be ground into a powder and used as raw materials for traditional medicine.

"Use Sand Tomb!" Gabite made sand appear from under Hariyama's feet, trapping it.

"This isn't good. Use Knock Off!" Hariyama slapped Gabite.

"Now use Aerial Ace!" Gabite dashed into Hariyama and attacked with a Critical Hit. Hariyama was down. "Yeah! Rock on Gabite!"

"Don't get too excited! Snorlax, go!" Snorlax crashed onto the battlefield.

"Gabite, Dual Chop!" Gabite slashed Snorlax twice, one for each fin.

"And now Body Slam!" Snorlax jumped onto Gabite. It became paralyzed. "And again!" Snorlax did just that, knocking Gabite out.

"YEAAH! FINAL POKÉMON TIME! GO TURTONATOR!" Out came a yellow and orange Pokémon with a huge shell with holes in on its back.

Turtonator (バクガメス)

The shell on its back is chemically unstable and explodes violently if struck. The hole in its stomach is its weak point.

Turtonator has no known evolutions.

"Use Flamethrower!" Turtonator shot fire at Snorlax. It was burned.

"Use Body Slam!" It didn't do that much unfortunately. "Okay, in that case, return Snorlax! Go Slowpoke!" Out came my dopey Water Type who took two Flamethrowers. "Ready?" We did our Water actions. "New Gym, new threat! And that being the Water Type Z-Move… HYDRO VORTEX!" The entire Gym was swamped in breathable water. With Turtonator being in the water, Slowpoke swam round and round creating a maelstrom that bashed Turtonator about. It did a fair bit.

"Now use Dragon Tail!" Turtonator hit Slowpoke with its tail, forcing Toucannon to come out.

"We can do this!" Toucannon's beak started getting hotter.

"Now use Flamethrower!" Turtonator hit Toucannon with fire.

"Now Beak Blast!" Toucannon blasted energy at Turtonator, knocking it out.

"Well, look at this! A victory! Yeah! Congrats!"

"I'll say," I said. "For a new Gym Leader, you sure do battle like a Veteran!"

"Yeah!" Ryuki said, strumming goodness knows what on his guitar. It certainly wasn't music, just very loud noise. "And for this, you get the Surge Badge!" Ryuki handed me a fake Badge that looked like the sun. "It's not official. And I also give you this!" I was also given a Dragon Scale. "Trade with a certain Pokémon and it will evolve! Yeah!"

With my head now hurting, it was time to head out.

Rotom's Move Dex!

We saw a lot of Dragon Typezz today, Roto! But a new Gym is exciting! So, it'zz time for a Dragon Type move!

Draco Meteor!

Draco Meteor is very strong! Roto! It involvezz a meteor coming down from the sky and hitting the oppozzing Pokémon! Cool huh? Well, what'zz not so cool izz the fact that it lowerzz the userzz Attack and Sp. Attack in the procezz. Roto. So uzze sparingly.

All Dragon Type Pokémon can learn Draco Meteor from Move Tutorzz!

And don't go uzzing thizz at a firework dizzplay; that would not go down well! Zzt zzt!
