Something was wrong. At first, it had been just a whisper inside Serenity, but now it was too distracting to ignore. Mercury's voice had long since become background noise, a muted din to the raging inferno of Serenity's thoughts. She should have been paying attention to the lecture on maintaining diplomatic relations, but she couldn't.

Instead, she was thinking of him.

He came unbidden into her mind. Standing there, powerful and imposing in his uniform. Everything about him was mesmerizing. The way the sunlight kissed his face, highlighting the chiseled lines of his jaw and the sharp angles of his cheekbones. His graceful stride that seemed so natural and predatory. Even the small details, like how his eyes would brush her face.

It was a delicious torture. Remembering the sparkle of vibrancy in his eyes, a deep blue that seemed to contain all the mysteries of the earth. Whenever a flicker of warmth sprouted, she recalled how his hands felt on her. Warm, like the first rays of sun dancing across her skin. The sensation sent shivers down her spine, leaving her craving more.

And his voice! That rumbling timbre that vibrated through her, stirring something primal within her soul. She'd never forget the way he looked at her, with that delicious mix of suspicion and something else, something that made her heart race and her breath catch. The intensity of their connection, the unspoken bond that seemed to form in an instant, left her feeling both exhilarated and terrified.

What would happen if this rebellion worsened and someone killed him? The idea of watching his lifeblood oozing from his body… Even thinking about that made her stomach revolt. She had to trust that he'd be able to keep himself alive.

Even though their encounter had been brief, it had sprouted a longing that she couldn't understand or explain. It was as if he'd awakened something inside her, a desire that she'd never felt before. The thought of him, the image of his face, the sound of his voice—they consumed her, pulling her further away from her duties and responsibilities.

No matter how hard she tried to focus, her mind kept drifting back to him, to the way he had made her feel so alive, so real. She couldn't ignore or forget the memory of his touch, the warmth of his hands, and the depth of his gaze—it all lingered in her thoughts.

"Princess Serenity."

Serenity knew that she had to regain control of herself, to push aside those feelings. But how could she, when every fiber of her being was drawn to him, to the man who had stirred such powerful emotions within her?

"Princess Serenity."

Yet it remained a fact that any sort of relationship was forbidden. Not by the laws of man, but of gods. To defy the gods wasn't a simple matter. It would have long-lasting and severe consequences.

A loud boom made her jump. "Princess Serenity!"

Blinking rapidly, she looked up. Her guardians were all staring at her, their expressions varying between concern and annoyance. Hoping to find an excuse, she looked out the large ornate window. The soft glow of Earth spilled into the room, casting gentle, shifting patterns on the floor.

"You haven't been paying attention," Mercury said.

Heat blossomed across her cheeks, and she glanced away, fiddling with the tablet on her lap. "I… um…"

Mars huffed and crossed her arms. "You're unbelievable! Mercury spent a lot of time making this lesson interesting for you. And what do you do? Space out!"

"I'm not sure anyone could make this subject interesting," Venus said. "No offense, Mercury."

"Yeah, maintaining diplomatic relations is easy." Jupiter slammed a fist into her palm. "Just win a wrestling match."

Mercury sighed. "This is all important information, Serenity. You'll be queen one day and you won't know what to do in these situations."

Serenity wove a strand of hair around her finger. "I know, I'm sorry. A lot of things have been on my mind recently."

Mars leaned in closer, her eyes narrowing. "Your aura has changed. What's happened?"

"If someone is messing with our princess, I'll smash their face in!" Jupiter growled.

"I'll check security," Venus said. "If Kunzite is playing at something, so help me!"

Serenity sighed. "It wasn't him."

"I bet it's Jadeite," Mars grumbled. "He's been messing with the fire spirits."

"No," Serenity said.

"Nephrite has been testing his boundaries lately too," Jupiter said. "Even mooncakes it was him."

"Stop!" Serenity channeled her inner monarch voice.

Again, they all looked at her. But this time, she used their attention to get something. "What do you know about the rebellion?"

For several long moments, the moonlit chamber was completely silent. There were no voices echoing off the pearlescent walls or delicate silver filigree decorations.

Mercury adjusted her tablet and hesitated, her finger tapping on the metal. She glanced at her tablet, then back at Serenity. She opened her mouth, but quickly shut it again. Shaking her head, she stepped back.

Mars huffed, muttering something unintelligible, and looked away. She paced back and forth, flicking fire between her fingers. Randomly, she'd stop and glance back at Serenity.

Venus cleared her throat and picked at the edges of her uniform, making faces at the wrinkled fabric. Swishing her hair, she twisted the metal band around her waist, making the metal clink.

Jupiter just shook her head and said, "Nope," over and over again.

Serenity shot to her feet, the chair she was sitting in toppling over backward with a clang on the marble floor. "I command you to tell me the truth!"

Mars snorted. "You only ever command us when you don't get what you want."

Jupiter and Venus laughed, leaning together. "Remember when she commanded Mercury to stop her lessons?"

"I'd rather not remember that," Mercury said, rubbing her head. "Disobeying my princess, was the hardest thing."

Serenity almost stomped her foot. They were deliberately keeping this information from her. "I was there for the meeting with the Queen and King! I already know the Dark Kingdom is involved, and I HATE being left in the dark!"

Her guardians glanced at each other.

Mercury set her tablet down on the table and exhaled a long and drawn-out breath. "Are you sure you want to know this?"

Serenity nodded. "You're always telling me to prepare myself to be queen, aren't you? How can I do that if you're always keeping information from me? The Moon Kingdom is my home."

Jupiter snorted. "I think you like Earth more."

The energy of the moon shifted slightly, as if laughing at the absurd statement.

Venus elbowed her. "Don't say it out loud."

Serenity scowled. "That was uncalled for, Jupiter. I love both the Moon and Earth. Is that not acceptable? Can I only love one place?"

Jupiter shrugged and looked away. A gust of air touched on Serenity's flaming cheeks, cooling her somewhat. She knew it was the moon offering its support and reassurance that it knew the truth.

"We've been monitoring the situation closely. The unrest on Earth has been growing, but we didn't want to worry you without cause," Mercury said.

Mars crossed her arms and leaned back, her fiery eyes meeting Serenity's with a piercing gaze. "It's more than just unrest. There's a lot of anger and fear driving the rebellion. They believe the Moon Kingdom has too much influence over Earth."

Venus, who had been lounging casually, sat up straighter. She picked at a golden heart that hung from the chain around her waist. "We didn't want to burden you, Princess. We thought it would be better if we handled it. Besides, you have enough on your plate with your lessons and royal duties. You've made it abundantly clear that you don't like responsibility."

Jupiter clenched her fists, her strong, protective nature coming to the forefront. "If any of those rebels think they can harm you or anyone from the Moon Kingdom, they'll have to go through me first."

Serenity looked at each of her guardians, loving them all for their dedication. "I appreciate your concern, but I need to know the truth. How can I help protect the Moon Kingdom if I don't know what's happening?"

Mercury sighed, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "I've had several meetings with Zoisite. We're coming up with some strategies to circumvent the aggressions the Dark Kingdom has implemented. It's complicated, with a lot of moving parts."

Mars nodded, her expression softening. "There are factions on Earth that don't agree with each other. It's not just us they're rebelling against, but their own leaders, too. Jadeite and I have been working with the sacred fire to determine possible courses. It's more challenging because the Dark Kingdom is blanketing areas with impenetrable auras. It's making channeling hard."

Venus added, "Kunzite and I are formulating some battle plans, hoping that we won't need them. So far, it hasn't come to all-out physical aggression. But we're not hopeful that will remain the case. Earth will most likely face open combat soon."

"Nephrite and I have started to train the Golden Kingdom troops in some tactics to combat the Dark Kingdom's dirty tricks," Jupiter said. "We've had some success on that front. The warriors on Earth aren't a complete disgrace."

Serenity's heart ached with jealousy and worry. "Have you met with Endymion?"

The guardians froze, exchanging worried glances. Serenity sucked in a breath, hoping that she hadn't just ruined everything. If she was ever going to see him again, she needed to ensure the guardians didn't suspect anything between them. After all, a single meeting couldn't amount to anything significant.

"Why are you asking about the prince?" Venus asked.

Mars raised an eyebrow. "That's a very specific question about a very specific person."

"Suspicious." Jupiter eyed her.

Serenity's cheeks flushed a delicate pink, and she looked away. "It's not important. I just... I need to know what's being done to keep everyone safe."

Venus leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Oh, it's important, alright. If I'm right, you've met him, haven't you?"

Mercury threw up her hands. "What part of against the rules do you not understand? You can get into serious trouble. The gods don't mess around with these things. We're talking cosmic implications!"

"Never mind the Silver Crystal doesn't exactly like rule breakers either," Mars said.

Jupiter nodded. "My bet is two days ago."

"Agreed," Venus said. "You've been distracted ever since then."

"Staring off into space."

"Not eating."

"Humming."

Serenity turned abruptly, her dress rustling softly. "I don't have time for this. I need to think." She turned and hurried out of the chamber, leaving her guardians to exchange knowing looks.

She hurried through the moonlit halls, her thoughts a tangled web of emotions. The soft, pearlescent glow of the walls cast a soothing light as she walked through the long, empty hallways of the Moon Palace. Her footsteps echoed on the cool marble floor, the sound mingling with the distant whisper of the palace's inhabitants. The faint scent of moonflowers drifted through the air, a subtle reminder of the serene gardens that surrounded the castle.

The long, empty hallways of the Moon Palace seemed to echo her tumultuous thoughts as Serenity made her way to her favorite spire. High in one of the castle's tallest towers, the spire was a place of solitude and reflection. It was her sanctuary, where she could escape the pressures of her royal duties and think.

As Serenity stepped onto the small, open balcony of her spire, a gentle breeze caressed her skin, carrying with it the crisp, clean scent of the Moon's atmosphere. The delicate railings felt cool beneath her fingertips, a contrast to the warmth that emanated from the pearlescent white structures below.

The soft glow of the moonlight bathed the kingdom in an ethereal light, making the buildings shimmer like precious gems. Above, the stars twinkled in the velvety sky, their distant light a comforting presence. And there, on the horizon, Earth hung like a brilliant blue jewel, its vibrant colors a mesmerizing sight to behold.

From this location, one could see the entire Moon Kingdom with its delicate railings, spires, and bridges. The view was breathtaking, with the pearlescent white structures glowing softly under the moonlight. The stars above twinkled like diamonds in the velvety sky, and the Earth hung like a brilliant blue jewel on the horizon.

Serenity sank onto the cool stone bench, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions. She closed her eyes and let the gentle breeze caress her face, hoping it would bring some clarity to her troubled mind. The scent of moonflowers drifted on the wind, mingling with the crisp, clean air.

All around her, the moon whispered, trying to comfort her. It sensed her trepidation, the conflict within her heart, and wanted to soothe her soul. Some thought it to be just a rock floating in space, but she knew the truth. The moon was its own living entity, and she was just the physical representation of it. Which is why it was trying so hard to help her.

She couldn't stop thinking about Endymion. When she closed her eyes, instantly, Endymion's image appeared. She could almost feel the warmth of his presence, the subtle scent of his skin—a mix of earthiness and something uniquely him. The memory of their brief encounter sent a shiver down her spine, the ghost of his touch still lingering on her skin. His voice, rich and deep, echoed in her ears, the sound both comforting and exhilarating.

The intensity of their meeting had stirred something deep within her, something she couldn't ignore. But that changed nothing.

The rebellion on Earth was a growing threat, and the danger it posed to Endymion was a constant source of anxiety for her. She had to do something, but what? How could she help protect him and the Earth without defying the gods and breaking the rules?

As she sat there, gazing out at the serene beauty of her kingdom, Serenity had never felt so alone or torn before. It felt like an impossible task to protect her home, honor the gods, and be in a relationship with the man that had captured her heart. Was it possible? Or was she doomed no matter what path she took?
