The morning in Saarbrücken dawned quietly, with a soft light filtering through the curtains of their hotel room. The previous night's exhaustion had given way to a calm, almost serene start to the day. Emily was the first to wake, feeling the stiffness in her body from the long drive and the tension of the night before. She stretched, yawning, and decided to get a head start on her morning routine.
Emily grabbed her toiletries and headed to the bathroom, hoping for a few peaceful moments under a hot shower. She had just turned on the water and was about to step in when the door flew open, and Camille barged in, toothbrush in hand.
"Camille!" Emily shrieked, jumping back, more surprised than angry. "You can't just barge in here! I'm about to take a shower."
Camille, seemingly unfazed, started brushing her teeth as if this were the most natural thing in the world. "Relax, I'll be quick. I just need to brush my teeth."
Emily, still holding the towel against her chest, glared at Camille in annoyance. "You could've waited! I was literally about to get in the shower. It's called knocking, Camille!"
Camille rolled her eyes but didn't stop brushing. "I didn't mean to barge in, okay? I just didn't think it was a big deal. We're all friends here, right?"
Emily, frustrated, shook her head. "It's not about being friends; it's about boundaries! Can you please just give me two minutes?"
Before Camille could respond, Mindy appeared at the doorway, looking slightly alarmed. "Guys, you need to hear this." She paused, glancing back over her shoulder to ensure no one was around. "Alfie's in trouble."
Both Emily and Camille stopped what they were doing, the tension between them forgotten for the moment.
"What do you mean, 'in trouble'?" Emily asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Mindy quickly shut the bathroom door behind her, lowering her voice. "I just overheard something. Apparently, Alfie was arrested before for killing one of his relatives. It's why he left London."
Camille's eyes widened, and she looked at Emily with a mixture of shock and vindication. "I knew something was off about him. I told you at the party in Paris, remember? That's why I didn't trust him!"
Emily felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. She had never heard anything about this before. "Mindy, why didn't you tell me this sooner?"
Mindy sighed, looking conflicted. "I didn't think it was true. It was just a rumor I heard, but then I remembered what Camille said at the party. I thought it was nothing, but now… I'm not so sure."
The three of them fell silent for a moment, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. Camille was the first to break the silence, her voice shaking slightly. "What do we do? Should we confront him? We're supposed to be on this road trip together."
Emily, still processing the information, shook her head slowly. "We need to figure out if it's true first. We can't just accuse him of something like that without knowing the facts."
"Agreed," Mindy said. "But for now, let's just keep our eyes open. We need to be careful."
They cautiously opened the bathroom door and peeked out. Alfie was in the room, shirtless, rummaging through his bag. He seemed completely unaware of their conversation. Emily couldn't help but notice the juxtaposition between the carefree Alfie she'd come to know and the sinister rumor Mindy had just shared. As they watched, he pulled on a shirt and began packing up his things, preparing for the day ahead.
The girls exchanged worried glances before retreating back into the bathroom.
"What are we going to do?" Camille whispered, her voice barely audible.
"For now, we just act normal," Emily said, trying to sound more confident than she felt. "We'll finish getting ready, and then we'll see how he acts. Maybe it's just a misunderstanding."
Mindy nodded in agreement, though she still looked uneasy. "Let's not jump to conclusions. But we should definitely stay together."
After quickly finishing their morning routines, the girls left the bathroom, trying to act as natural as possible. Alfie looked up as they entered the main room, offering a casual smile. "Morning, ladies. Ready to hit the road?"
Emily forced a smile, trying to push the doubts out of her mind. "Yeah, just about. You?"
"Yep, just need to use the bathroom," Alfie said, grabbing his toiletries and heading toward the bathroom without a care in the world.
As soon as he was out of earshot, the girls huddled together, their voices low.
"Did anyone else notice how calm he is?" Camille whispered. "Like nothing's wrong?"
"Maybe he doesn't know we heard anything," Mindy suggested. "Or maybe… maybe it's not true, and he's just being himself."
Emily nodded slowly, though the unease hadn't fully left her. "Let's just keep an eye on him. We'll figure this out."
A few minutes later, Alfie emerged from the bathroom, looking refreshed and ready to go. The group packed up their belongings and loaded everything into the car, trying to maintain an air of normalcy despite the growing tension.
As they hit the road, heading toward their next destination, Aschaffenburg, the girls tried to distract themselves from the troubling thoughts lingering in the back of their minds. They chatted about the day ahead, asking Alfie what there was to see in Aschaffenburg.
"What's there at Aschaffenburg, anyway?" Mindy asked, leaning back in her seat.
Alfie glanced at her in the rearview mirror, his usual charm on full display. "It's a charming little town with a lot of history. There's Johannisburg Castle, which is pretty impressive, and some nice parks. It's a good place to stop and stretch our legs."
Emily nodded, trying to focus on the trip rather than the rumors. "That sounds nice. It'll be good to take a break and explore."
Camille, who had been quiet since they left the hotel, finally spoke up. "I could use some fresh air. And maybe some time to think."
The tension in the car eased slightly as they drove on, the promise of a new day and new experiences ahead. But underneath the surface, the doubts and questions remained, swirling in the minds of the three girls as they journeyed toward the unknown.
