Thankfully, the journey went very smoothly and within the next two and a half days, they finally made it to Akron.
Once they left the shoreline, Yalu had Loomis make a right onto this wide sandy path that led to an open road. The road led them about a couple miles inland and from there, they followed the road as it curved to the left.
Not even a half mil down on the right was the large settlement of Akron.
Galen, Hanna, and Ann stared on in amazement as Yalu and Loomis slowly drove the carriage through the entrance into the large village. Yalu wasn't kidding when he said it was a pretty lively place with a lot of people. Many of which were out and about at this time going about their business.
A few would stop and wave and say hello to Yalu and Loomis upon recognizing who the visitors were.
There was a decent size mix of apes and humans idling about the large dirt road that went through the village. There were also quite a few dwellings that lined it on either side.
The carriage kept going, though they had the horse walking due to all the foot traffic lining the road. They made a couple turns onto some connecting roads. Yalu knew exactly where he was going and a few minutes later, they stopped right in front.
A couple guards were idling about the large hut. They stopped and turned their attention to the carriage that just pulled up in front of the prefect's quarters.
"Councilman Yalu, Loomis, good to see you again." One of the gorilla guards said.
"Hello, Turok. Good to see you and Sako again. Is Prefect Zane in? I brought my family with me and there is something important I'd like to discuss with him." Yalu says to the guards.
"Yes, he's in. Working on some paperwork, I believe. But he'll see you." Sako replied.
"Thank you. Is it ok to park the carriage here or should I pull it around to the side of the quarters?" Yalu asks.
"Here is fine." Turok said.
"Thank you." Yalu says.
He and Loomis get down from the driver's seat and go to the back of the carriage.
Loomis opens the door and reaches up to takes Ann's hand and helps her out. He then does the same with Hanna and Galen, before t closing the carriage door. Then the small group of five head to the front door of the prefect's quarters. Where once again, Loomis opens the door for the family.
"Thanks, Loomis." Hanna says.
"Yes, thank you." Galen adds.
"You're welcome." He replied with a small smile.
They all headed in. The room they walked into was the secretary's office.
A female chimp was sitting at desk in the upper right side of the office writing something down. She stopped and looked up when she saw someone came in.
"Councilman Yalu, nice to see you again. How are things?" The secretary asks.
"Everything is well, thank you, Lorry. I hear that Prefect Zane is in. May we speak with him? It's very important." Yalu asks.
"Well, he's a little busy. But I'm sure he can make time for you. Especially, if you say it's important." Lorry says.
"Thank you." Yalu replied.
Then he along with the rest of the group head for the door that would lead into the Prefect's office.
"Shall I wait out here, Sir?" Loomis asks.
"Yes." Yalu says.
Loomis nods, then opens the door for the prefect's office for them.
As soon as the door opens, the prefect looks up from what he's doing to see who it is. He smiles when he sees the familiar face of an old friend.
"Yalu, you come by for another visit. And you brought company." Prefect Zane said, as his gaze goes from the old chimp the other three with him.
Hanna and Galen study the new ape before them.
He was quite young. Just as Yalu told them. He really didn't look to be much older than Galen.
"Yes, this is my wife, Ann, my son, Galen, and his female companion, Hanna. We actually come here because there is something very important, I'd like to discuss with you." Yalu replied.
"Of course, please, sit." The prefect said.
There were unfortunately, only two chairs. So, Galen and Hanna let Yalu and Ann take them while the younger couple stood off to the side.
"Forgive me for the chair shortage. I don't tend to have more than two people in here most days." Prefect Zane says.
"It's fine." Galen replied.
Zane nodded, then turned his attention back to Yalu.
"So, what can I help you with?" He asks the older chimp.
"Well, my son and his companion are looking for somewhere to settle down. And Akron is the best place I could think of to take them. I was wondering, if you had anymore spare huts here and if you could lend them one." Yalu told him.
"We'd be very grateful if you could spare them a place to live." Ann added.
"I see." Zane said.
Then the prefect's gaze went to Galen and Hanna.
"Where are your other friends? The astronauts? I'm surprised they're not with you." The prefect stated.
The young pair froze. This is the last thing they would've ever expected. That he would know who they were. Even Yalu and Ann were stunned. Yalu never told him during his last visit here that Galen was the renegade ape that was traveling with the two astronauts.
"How...how did you know?" Galen asked, still surprised and nervous.
"While this territory is very far from Central City within that district, word still travels far. A lot of people heard about the two astronauts and renegade ape. We even heard a little about your female companion not too long ago." Zane replied.
"Are you...going to turn us in?" Hanna hesitantly asks.
Prefect Zane shook his head.
"No, we're nothing like the high council. No one here believes the astronauts were ever a threat. Just men lost to time. About twenty years ago, an astronaut crashed his ship here in our district. Some of the gorilla troopers from here found him lost in the woods. They escorted him here and brought him to the prefect at that time. It was easy to see the man was not a threat to anyone. Just lost and trying to survive in a world that was alien to him.
The prefect allowed him to take up residence here. He taught us many things about his time. Showed us how to improve things that could benefit us. He was a good man. I had the pleasure of meeting him and getting to know him. Unfortunately, he did pass away about two years ago. But he left an everlasting impact on this settlement and some of the other villages he has traveled to during the years.
It was clear that astronauts are not harbingers of destruction. If anything, his presence here taught us that they could teach us ways to better society for both apes and humans alike. Despite what most of the council believes, just because a human may show higher intelligence, doesn't mean they are dangerous.
The fact that you were with them for as long as you were, I'm sure you have seen this for yourself and that is why you chose to stay with them, is this correct?" Prefect Zane implied.
Galen was silent for a moment, before answering.
"Yes, they showed me how it could be better if apes and humans could learn to work together. And not as master and slave, but as equals. That the world would be better off if it were that way. That we would be better off and could benefit so much more from it. Unfortunately...they were killed as we were crossing a narrow mountain path trying to get away from Urko and his men. So, it's just Hanna and myself now." He says.
Hanna grasped his hand and squeezed it in reassurance. She knew it was still very hard to talk about his best friends' horrible death.
"I am very sorry, to hear of their passing. Nonetheless, you and your female companion are more than welcome to stay here. There are some new homes that have been built not too long ago. They were just finished being furnished with furniture and other appliances a couple weeks ago. Since then, some of them were taken up. But I believe there are still a couple empty ones left you may choose from." Zane told them.
"Thank you, very much." Galen said.
"Yes, thank you." Hanna says.
"Of course. And try not to worry about Urko. I'm still quite sure he doesn't know much about this territory or Akron for that matter. You'll be safe here." The prefect assured them.
Galen and Hanna became silent once Urko's name was mentioned.
"They won't have to worry about him either way. Urko died a few days ago while in pursuit of Galen and Hanna. They fell through a hole in the earth into some underground cavern and right into an underground lake. While Hanna was able to pull Galen ashore, Urko unfortunately drowned. The council is unaware that Galen and Hanna made it out and they believe them to be dead too. It's best they don't find out though. Especially, Zaius." Yalu told Prefect Zane.
"I'm sorry to hear that. Even if he was cruel. And I can understand wanting to continue to keep Galen and Hanna safe. And they will be here. Not just in Akron, but in this entire territory. As you are aware, we have our own separate laws. Even the high council cannot come in here and forcefully take people from our lands. We forbid it. And once they establish a home here, they are automatically citizens to both Akron and this territory." The prefect stated.
What he has been telling them so far, was very reassuring and continued putting Galen and Hanna more at ease.
"Thank you for helping us out, Zane. More importantly, thank you for helping out my son and his companion." Yalu said.
"You're welcome, old friend. Shall I send for someone to show you all to one of the new homes?" Prefect Zane inquires.
"That would nice, thank you." Ann says.
The prefect nodded and stood up. He then rounded his desk and gestured for them to follow him.
They all left his office and walked past the secretary. On the way, Yalu called for Loomis to come. Then they all stepped outside of the prefect's quarters. Prefect Zane saw the guards, Turok and Sako, nearby talking to a couple villagers. He went to address them.
"Turok, Sako, can you please show Yalu and his family to one of the new empty homes over in the northwest section of the village please?" He asks them.
"Yes, Sir." They replied.
"Thank you." Zane said, then he turned back to the group.
"You can follow Turok and Sako in your carriage. It's not far. Maybe only about five minutes before you get there." The prefect informed them.
"Thank you." Galen told him.
Everyone else thanked him as well, before loading back up into the carriage.
Yalu got into the carriage this time with his family, and let Loomis take over the driver seat on his own. The gorilla guards approached the carriage afterwards.
"Ok, Loomis. Just follow us right this way." Turok told him.
"You got it." Loomis replied.
Turok and Sako went to stand in front of the horse drawn carriage, then gestured for him to follow.
Loomis gave the reins a light flick and the horse started walking. He made sure to keep a slow walking pace behind the two gorillas as they led him through the fairly busy streets. The family continued looking out the windows of the carriage at the different surroundings. Like Central City, there were some small one-story dwellings and some larger two-story dwellings.
Then at one point they passed one place in particular that was very large. A three-story building. Yalu pointed it out as the village hospital and clinic.
A couple minutes later the street they were on opened up a little to reveal a very large village square with all kinds of stands and small shops littering the large, open area. Yalu told them it is the village marketplace. Galen and Hanna were amazed by the sheer size of it. They have never seen such a large village square before. But then, from what they have seen so far, this settlement is huge.
Then about three more minutes later, they came upon another street and the gorillas started leading them down it. It was only about halfway down, the gorilla's signaled for them to stop. Loomis stopped the carriage. He then stepped down from the seat and went around to the back and opened the carriage door to let everyone out.
The small family stepped out of the carriage and looked at the home before them on the left side of the street.
"This is one of the only two still available. I believe it has a kitchen, living room, one bathroom, and three bedrooms on the second floor. There is also a door in the back that leads to a small backyard out back" Sako told them.
"I'm surprised you knew all that about this home, Sako." Turok said.
"My brother was one of the contractors that helped build these homes. He told me about the setups in a few of them. This one included." Sako replied.
"It looks great." Hanna says, as she eyes the nice size two-story stucco looking home.
"Yes, it really does." Galen said, while eyeing it.
"Would you like us to show you around inside? Or would you rather look by yourselves?" Turok asks.
"I think we can take it from here. Thank you, Turok." Yalu told them.
"Alright, enjoy and welcome to Akron." Turok told the new young couple.
Then the two gorilla guards started walking back the way they came.
The small group approached the new home. They opened the front door and went inside to look around. The door opened up into a nice size living room with two large couches situated against the back wall and the wall to the right of it, making an L-shape. There were also a couple comfy chairs. Both of them on the opposite wall from the couches.
At the back wall on the left a few feet from the couch was a doorway. They approached it and it led into a small hallway. There was another opening on the left that clearly led into a kitchen area. While on the right side of the hall was a door.
When they opened it, they saw it was the bathroom. It had a large tub in the back left corner across from the toilet and sink.
The group then walked into the kitchen to get a better look. It had a medium size wooden table with four chairs situated around it. There was a coal stove top in the left-hand corner that was connect to a counter. Then next to the counter was a large wooden pantry.
Afterwards, the group went back into the hall and saw two more doors. One was right next to the bathroom, the other was straight ahead.
The door next to the bathroom ended up being a small linen closet. While the door at the end was the backdoor that led out to the small backyard. Then to the left of the door to the backyard was a set of stairs that led to the second floor where they were told the bedrooms were. So, they all went upstairs to check out these rooms.
The stairs led up to another hallway. Where there was actually a total of four doors. Two on the right and two on the left. They all went from door to door scoping out the bedrooms. It was clear one was the master bedroom which was the first door on the left. Then the small door next to it actually led into another small linen closet. Though unlike the one downstairs that had extra towels, this one carried extra blankets.
Then they looked into the two doors on the right which were the other two bedrooms. These bedrooms were not as big and had some smaller furnishings, indicating them as either kids' rooms or guestrooms.
Once they all went back downstairs, they all couldn't help but agree it was an all-around beautiful home. A perfect size for a family.
It made Galen and Hanna feel very lucky to be offered such a wonderful home. Almost hard to believe it was theirs. Yet here it was, and it was a brand-new unused home with all new furnishings.
"Oh, Galen. It's a beautiful home. I'm so happy for you both." Ann told her son.
"Thank you, mother. I believe we're very happy with it too." He replied.
"Certainly, more than we could've ever imagined it would be." Hanna said, still amazed by the set up and how spacious it was.
"Yes, I think we can all agree that you probably couldn't have found a more better home than this." Yalu agreed.
They only looked around for a couple more minutes, before Yalu spoke up again.
"Well, as much as I wish we can stay long, we can't. Unfortunately, we need to head back out and go back home to Central City. I have a very important council meeting in a few days that I must attend to. The only way for me to make it on time is if we leave now." Yalu says, in an apologetic tone.
"We understand father. And thank you so much for bringing us here." Galen said.
"Yes, thank you." Hanna told him.
"You're welcome. I hope you and Hanna can enjoy a new start and new life here. You couldn't have chosen a better place to do so." Yalu tells them.
"And we will visit you again the next chance we get." Ann adds.
Galen's parents then share a hug with him. Then to Hanna's surprise, they share a small hug with her too and wished them the best of luck.
Then they began to head to the front door. On the way out, Loomis told the young couple goodbye and good luck as well. Afterwards, he closed the front door behind them, leaving the pair alone to get situated in their new home.
"So, what shall we do first then?" Galen asks her with a small smile.
"Let's take our packs upstairs and bring them into the bedroom and unpack the few things we have." Hanna suggests first.
"Good idea. Be nice to walk around for a change without a heavy pack on our backs." He replied.
The pair headed back down the hall and went upstairs. They went into the master bedroom and set their packs on top of this nice oak dresser. Then they opened their packs and started pulling some things out.
They didn't really have anything to put in the drawers just yet. Hanna still had her old clothes and sneakers tucked in the bottom of her pack along with her second shirt and extra pairs of undies. She pulled those all out and opened the top drawer, placing them in there.
"We can put our travel blankets in the linen closet next to our room. The very few fruits and vegetables we have left we can bring back down to the kitchen. The water canteens, we can probably store in the closet in here." He told her.
"We can probably put our packs in the closet too." She adds.
Afterwards, her gaze goes to one of the two windows in the bedroom.
A soft breeze came through filtering the room. Hanna closed her eyes and took it all in. For the first time since she got here, it feels like a huge weight was finally lifted off of her shoulders. No more running, no more being hunted, just free to now live her life again. Not only that but she gets to live it with the man she loves.
Galen noticed she became quiet and reached over to lightly grasp her hand.
"You alright?" He asks her.
Hanna opened her eyes and shifted her gaze to him. He could see her eyes appeared to be a little glassy and can only wonder what could be wrong.
"Yeah, it's just...after all this time, I can't believe...we finally made it. No more running and being hunted. We can finally have the lives we want." She says, as one stray tear leaves her eyes.
He reached up and gently cupped her cheek, wiping away the tear.
"Yes, we are free. And now, we can start over. Together. Just like we've been wanting to do from the start." Galen softly said, as he caressed her cheek.
A smile slowly appears on her face. Then she tilts her head up and presses her forehead to his.
Galen wraps his arms around Hanna, pulling her in close. He can feel what she's feeling. It was just like this huge tidal wave of instant relief rolling off of them. It was almost hard to believe that after all this time, they can finally live their lives the way they want. A life without fear and impending death.
Instead, it was now to be a life of happiness and a brighter future for the both of them
He leaned in a little more, closing the gaps between their faces, and pressed his lips softly to hers. Hanna was more than happy to return the kiss and deepen it. Her lips poked and prodded at his until he parted them to allow her entrance.
Soft sighs left them as their tongues danced with each other.
