Chapter Two: Encounter of the Flying Kind
The sun rose from the eastern horizon with the light touching the lush greenery and trees that surrounded Kevin and Jeremy's campsite. Two blue tents sat on each side of an old, burned-out campfire. Inside each tent was blue sleeping bags that one contained Kevin and the other Jeremy. Both boys began stirring and woke up from their slumber.
'Morning already?' questioned Kevin as he groaned, stretched and walked out of his tent.
Not too much longer after Kevin walked out of his tent, so did Jeremy. Kevin yawned hard and pretty long.
"Man, I managed to get a good night's sleep without my own bed," Kevin stated.
"So did I, I was kind of worried about that," Jeremy added.
Jeremy's stomach began growling with Kevin's following suit. They looked at each other embarrassingly.
"I guess we need to eat breakfast," suggested Kevin.
"I think you're right," agreed Jeremy.
"My mom let me help her out in the kitchen from time to time, so I know how to cook a little," confessed Kevin.
"That's great bro," Jeremy said.
After Kevin got everything ready over another campfire, both Kevin and Jeremy let out their Pokémon to eat breakfast as well. Kevin handed Jeremy a bowl of cooked canned sausages and Kevin served himself a bowl as well and began chowing down.
After cleaning up their campsite and packing everything up. Jeremy looked into the Kanto guidebook.
"So how long do you think it will take us to get to Viridian City?" asked Jeremy.
"We should be there by this afternoon," Kevin answered.
"That's good, we will be one step closer to our first gym battle," stated Jeremy.
"That is true," Kevin stated. "I can't wait for that fight."
Jeremy smirked, "I doubt you will win with Charmander."
"Ha! You just wait and see," Kevin said, laughing.
After their little joke the boys walked back to the road and began walking to continue their journey. As they walked down the road they talked about how they would beat the Pewter City gym leader. Their conversation is cut when they began hearing loud squaking noises coming from a nearby meadow. The boys looked at each other and nodded and ran down the road to an open meadow where two different flocks of birds are attacking each other.
One of the flocks were Spearow, the other was a bird of the same size but had tan feathers from its beak down the front of their body and brown feathers from their head down their backs to their tails with tan feathers at the tip of their wings. They also had a softer look on their faces unlike the Spearow's that always looked pissed off.
"Look, Spearow and Pidgey are fighting," Kevin pointed out.
"I bet the flock of Pidgey were just flying by and those Spearow attacked them just because they flew into Spearow territory," Jeremy said.
"That's a very good possibility," Kevin said.
What the boys didn't know is that the Spearow overheard the boys talking and switched their attention to them. Kevin looked up and saw the Spearow flying toward them.
"Oh, shit bro, whatever you do, don't look back!" Kevin yelled as he began running.
Jeremy didn't know what was going on and so he did what Kevin told him not to do which was look and saw the Spearow flying toward him and began running. Jeremy caught up to Kevin, but the Spearow were closing in on the boys.
"Crap!" yelled Kevin. "We need to run faster!"
The two took off as fast as they could down the road. The boys didn't get too far down the road as they were tired out. Kevin and Jeremy stopped and were gasping to catch their breath. Suddenly the boys heard a girl's voice call out.
"Squirtle, use Bubble Beam!" the girl's voice ordered.
Out of the nearby bushes, a beam of bubbles shot out and hit the flock of Spearow directly. The birds turned around and flew away.
"That was great!" the girl's voice said. "Good job Squirtle."
Kevin and Jeremy turned to see a girl with long, straight brown hair that was pulled back in a ponytail that went all the way to the small of her back. She had sparkling emerald eyes and was wearing a pink t-shirt with a picture of a Meowth on the front and blue jeans with pink sneakers. A blue turtle inside a brown turtle shell with a curly tail stood by her side.
"Thank you," Kevin said after he realized he was just staring at the girl.
"It was nothing," the girl said. "It looked like you needed the help."
"Those Spearow were attacking a flock of Pidgey but all of a sudden they started attacking us," Jeremy added.
"Maybe we should go back and check on those Pidgey?" asked the girl.
"Yeah, I think that's a good idea," said Jeremy. "But first, what's your name?"
"Oh, I guess I should introduce myself," the girl said with a giggle. "My name is RaChelle."
"I'm Kevin."
"I'm Jeremy, nice to meet you."
"So which way to the Pidgey?" asked RaChelle.
"This way," the boys said in unison.
The boys and their new friend RaChelle walked back down the road to the meadow where the Pidgey and Spearow were fighting. Once they reached the meadow, luckily for them the Spearow were long gone and the Pidgey had landed in the meadow to rest.
Kevin, Jeremy and RaChelle looked around the meadow to see if any of the Pidgey were seriously injured. It seemed all the Pidgey were in good shape.
"I don't see any Pidgey that look real hurt," said RaChelle.
"They all seem pretty healthy to me," added Kevin.
"I guess we helped the Pidgey out with our presence because it did make the Spearow switch their focus to me and Kevin," pointed out Jeremy.
"True," added Kevin.
The three trainers decided to leave the Pidgey in peace because they were fine after all. As they walked down the road a lone Pidgey landed on the road in front of them. Kevin decided he was going to capture one.
"Charmander, go!" Kevin said as he threw the Poké ball.
The Poké ball opened with a white flash and Charmander appeared. The Pidgey knew it was time to battle and started flapping its wings and picked up dust heading toward Charmander.
"Charmander, dodge!" ordered Kevin.
Charmander jumped out of the way of the Sand Attack, but the Pidgey started flying toward Charmander in a Tackle.
"Use your Tackle!" ordered Kevin.
Charmander jumped toward the Pidgey and Charmander's tackle was a bit stronger than Pidgey as it pushed Pidgey to the ground.
Kevin grabbed an empty Poké ball and threw it at the Pidgey. The Poké ball hit Pidgey and opened up and Pidgey turned into energy and pulled into the Poké ball. The Poké ball hit the ground and wiggled while the middle button blinked. It did it two more times before the light stopped blinking, signaling a successful capture. Kevin walked up to the Poké ball and picked it up.
"Nice, I caught a Pidgey," Kevin said and grabbed Charmander's Poké ball. "And you Charmander, you did great, so you get a good rest, return."
A red beam from the Pokémon hit Charmander and turned him into energy and went back into the Poké ball.
"Congrats bro," Jeremy said.
RaChelle however realized she was just staring and blushed a little and turned away. The kids returned walking down the road.
"Man, I didn't realize how far away Viridian City still is," Kevin said, breaking the long silence that had fallen on the travelers.
"You did say we'd be there by the afternoon," reminded Jeremy.
"I think if you didn't have a pit stop with Pidgey and Spearow, you'd probably would be in Viridian City by now," said RaChelle.
The travelers began hearing a weird noise coming from behind them. They stood and waited as the sound got closer. Soon they realized the noise was the squacking of Spearow as they flew from the Horizon and this time there were even more.
"Oh my God!" Jeremy shouted.
"Why'd they come back?" Kevin asked.
"And with more," added RaChelle.
"We have no choice, we have to fight them off," Jeremy said.
"I think it's the only way," RaChelle added.
Kevin sighed as he grabbed the Poké ball for Charmander and threw it, releasing the lizard.
"Bulbasaur, you're up!" Jeremy said, throwing the Poké ball that releases Bulbasaur.
"Squirtle, I need you!" RaChelle said, throwing her Poké ball that releases Squirtle.
After releasing their Pokémon, the large flock of angry Spearow had caught up to them and began diving in for an attack.
"Charmander, Ember attack now!" Kevin ordered.
Charmander turned around and began waging its tail back and forth as embers from the tail shot towards the flock, hitting different sections of Spearow.
"Bulbasaur, Razor Leaf!" ordered Mike.
Bulbasaur than released razor sharp leaves from its bulb, hitting another section of the large flock of Spearow.
"Squirtle, Bubble Beam!" ordered RaChelle.
Squirtle released a beam of bubbles from it mouth and hit the last section of the flock of angry Spearow. The flock flew back up in the air but only to circle back and dive in for another attack.
"Damn it, that wasn't enough, they're coming back again!" yelled Kevin.
"We need to use our major attacks for this," Jeremy suggested.
RaChelle and Kevin agreed, it was time for the main event.
"Charmander, Flamethrower!" ordered Kevin.
"Bulbasaur, Solar Beam!" ordered Jeremy as Bulbasaur began absorbing light into its bulb.
"Squirtle, Hydro Pump!" ordered RaChelle.
Squirtle withdrew into its shell and began spinning with water coming out of all five openings of its shell. Bulbasaur finally absorbed enough sun light and released a very bright beam. The Solar Beam mixed with Charmander's flames and Squirtle's Hydro Pump hit the flock of Spearow creating a large and bright explosion.
It felt like it took forever for the smoke of the explosion to clear, revealing that their major attack worked as some had fainted while others flew away.
"Phew, we did it," Kevin stated as he returned Charmander.
Jeremy and RaChelle followed suit returning Bulbasaur and Squirtle.
Night was falling as the three trainers walked down the road. They were desperately trying to make it to Viridian City since the flock of Spearow put them behind on time. Suddenly Jeremy saw lights coming from the darkened horizon.
"I think those lights are Viridian City!" Jeremy pointed out.
Kevin, Jeremy and RaChelle continued walking until the city came into view, sure enough they had finally reached Viridian City.
"Oh, thank heavens," RaChelle said. "I'm ready for a Pokémon Center bed."
The trainers finally reached their destination and walked towards the city. Night had fallen but the city was so well lit, it almost looked like day. Kevin was ready for a bed himself as they headed to the Pokémon Center for the night.
Now that our heroes have found Viridian City, what is next for their adventure? Stay tuned to the next chapter of Pokémon EX.
