Finn ended up showing half-an-hour after Carlos had. He came to the door with a broken bouquet of flowers, some ragged jeans, a wrinkled shirt and a tie that didn't match anything he was wearing. As soon as Santana saw him she chuckled, which made her receive a glare from her father and Rachel. Shelby didn't know what to do with the flowers she was offered, since they looked like they had been stepped on. She still accepted them with a smile and said she was going to put them in water, but Santana was sure she was going to throw them in the trash.
Once everyone was sat down at the table, they could finally eat. To say that the dinner was awkward was an understatement.
"This is very tasty honey, thank you for cooking." Carlos said.
"Oh, thank you dear. Santana actually helped me." Shelby said.
But Carlos decided to avoid his daughter, knowing any interaction between them could lead to a big fight.
"So, Finn, Rachel tells me you're the quarterback." Carlos said, trying to spark a conversation.
"Uh, yeah." Was all Finn said. Carlos sighed, noticing his attempt at starting a conversation failed.
Shelby couldn't stand the silence anymore, so she decided to make her own attempt. "Lucy, are you one of Santana's classmates or one of her soccer teammates?" Shelby asked politely. Rachel snickered at that, but automatically stopped once she received a glare from Santana.
"W-we're actually not classmates or teammates. I'm a year younger than Santana." Lucy explained shyly.
"Oh, how did you two meet then?" Shelby asked curiously.
Seeing that Lucy had blushed ashamedly, Santana decided to salvage her from the situation. "Lucy was nice enough to show me around school. Taught me all about it." Santana said.
"Oh, that's very sweet honey." Shelby smiled at Lucy.
"Daddy, Finn isn't just the quarterback, he's also the captain of the football team." Rachel said, trying to pull the attention back to her and her boyfriend. Santana frowned, she was sure quarterbacks were always captains, it's a rule, it wasn't a great achievement. "And he's great at it."
"Well, maybe we could go to one of his next game, when is it Finn?" Carlos asked.
"It's tomorrow morning actually." Finn said.
"Well then, we'll all go to your game tomorrow." Carlos said.
Santana was about to point out that her own game was tomorrow morning, but she doubted her father cared about it. Lucy frowned, noticing Santana hadn't invited her dad to the first game of the season.
"How did last season go? 'Cause I heard you didn't win any games." Santana decided to be bitter about it.
"Shut up, Santana." Rachel hissed.
"Maybe it was just a rumour, that school is filled with them." Santana said, staring right at Rachel.
"Finn, what else do you do apart from football?" Carlos asked to diffuse the tension.
"I'm in glee club."
"Oh, is he your student Shelby?" Carlos asked.
"No, I run the all female choir." Shelby said.
"Oh."
After that there was a very long silent moment, once again Shelby decided to include the other girls into the conversation by asking Lucy questions.
"Are you in any clubs dear?"
"I am actually. I'm in photography." Lucy said shyly.
"We have that club?" Finn asked.
"Yeah, but it's just me. I take all the school pictures and stuff." Lucy explained, blushing at being the spotlight.
"Oh, well that's great dear." Shelby said.
"Will you be taking pictures at Finn's game tomorrow?" Carlos asked.
"Um, no actually," Lucy said, looking at Santana who just slightly shook her head. "I have something else to take pictures for."
"Shouldn't the school cover the important games?" Carlos asked.
"Y-yeah, but there's another game, and it's only me so I-I had to choose." Lucy explained, nervous.
"You should take pictures of my boyfriend when he wins when the other game's over." Rachel said petulantly.
After that it was really silent. Lucy would say that it was the most uncomfortable dinner of her life, and she has uncomfortable dinners every day. The tension in the room was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
"So, Finn, what do your parents do?"
"I'm really sorry about that." Santana said as soon as they were in her room.
"It's fine, don't worry about it." Lucy said as she looked around the room. She noticed that Santana only had two or three boxes that she hadn't unpacked, a suitcase still full of clothes, and furniture that looked unused, except for the bed. "Your room's very…"
"Pink?" Santana filled in with a laugh, "yeah, it was Rachel's room, I think I'm gonna paint it black." She said. She had thought about painting it, but at the same time thought it would be a waste since she didn't plan on staying long.
"Black, really?" Lucy scrunched her nose. "Isn't that a big no-no for designers or something?"
"I don't really know, but I think I can make it work." Santana said confidently. "You can help me paint if you want."
"Just what I wanted, to spend a whole day ruining my clothes with black paint, sure, I'll do it." Lucy said sarcastically. She didn't know why, but she became confident around Santana.
"Come on, it's a big room. I promise to buy you some food after it."
"Great bribe." Lucy deadpanned, Santana just laughed. "Why didn't you tell your parents that you have a game tomorrow?"
"One, they are not my parents, and two I don't want them there." Santana said seriously.
"Don't you want somebody to cheer you on?" Lucy asked with a frown.
"I'll have you there, right?" She asked. When Lucy nodded, Santana smiled. "Besides, it's my first game, the coach doesn' even trust me, I'll be on the bench." The latina explained.
"Well, I'm sure he'll let you in if you're as good as you say you are. And when he does, I'll be cheering you on." Lucy beamed at her.
Okay, I honestly didn't know what to write. I'm in a weird writing situation. I finally finished school, (yay for me!) but I'm starting college soon. I'll also have to look for work in the meantime, cause Argentina's economy is really shit now. While I was gone I started writing a ton of stuff, that is just unfinished. I'll probably share some of it with you and you can decide what my next fic will be. I promise my next stuff will be better and longer. I was kind of uninspired, and anxious and sad. The situation that we are living really isn't great and I just wanted to do something that I love for a while, so here it is. You'll probably hear from me soon, love ya!
