Santana decided to leave the house early because she knew her father would insist she came to Finn's game with them. She decided to have breakfast at the Lima Bean with Lucy. She knew she couldn't avoid her father forever, especially considering that the football field and soccer field were practically next to each other, but there was probably another game going on too, so she hoped nobody would notice. Besides, all the attention was always on the football team, even if Mckinley's team had apparently never won a game.
Santana slowly walked down the stairs, trying to avoid making too much noise and drawing attention to herself. The last thing she wanted was Shelby offering breakfast or asking her about her plans. Or even worse, her father forcing her to eat breakfast with them and making her go to Finn's game. She quickly opened the front door and left the house. She walked as fast as she could without looking weird towards Lucy's house so they could walk together to the Lima Bean. When she got there she knocked on the door.
The door quickly opened and Lucy wasn't the one that opened the door. "Hello, we don't want whatever you're selling." Judy Fabray said rudely to the girl standing on her doorstep and quickly moved to close the door again.
"I'm Santana, Lucy's friend. I'm not here to sell you anything Mrs. Fabray. Nice to meet you." Santana said as politely as she could and extended her hand to greet her friend's mom.
Mrs. Fabray looked at the hand and grimaced before shaking it. "Oh, well then come in." Judy said sceptically. This wasn't what she meant when she said that Lucy needed friends. Russell wasn't going to like this.
Santana stepped into the house uncomfortably, she had met enough racist people in her life to know that Judy was one of them. "Is Lucy home?" She asked, still trying to be as polite as possible.
"Yes, I'll go grab her." Judy said and quickly went to get her daughter.
Santana waited patiently, not moving from her spot. She looked around at the house, noticing the many pictures with fake smiles.
Lucy had woken up early and started preparing for the day. The only problem that she had was that she didn't know what to wear for the soccer game. For some reason she felt like the clothes she had weren't nice enough and she wanted to look good for Santana. She had chosen the nicest outfit she could find when her mother knocked on her door.
"Come in."
"Lucy, when you said you had made a friend I expected a different type of friend." Judy said as soon as she entered the room.
"What is that supposed to mean mom?" Lucy asked.
"You know your father won't like this."
"Then we should keep this between us. Mom, this is my first ever friend. She's really nice I promise you. Can you please look past your prejudices for once in your life and let me be happy?" Lucy asked, pleading. Judy had never heard Lucy talk back to her, maybe that's why she considered lying to her husband for her.
"Where is she from?" Judy asked, unsure.
"She's from New York mom."
"You know what I meant." Judy said sternly.
"And I answered, she's from New York mom." Lucy knew what the question was, but she wanted her mother to shut off her racist thoughts.
"Where did you say she lived?" Judy asked, maybe if her family had money they could let this go. This was Lucy's first friend, she would make an effort.
"She lives right down the street. Her dad's a doctor and her stepmom teaches at the school." Lucy explained.
"Right down the street you said? Is she Dr. Diaz's daughter?" Judy asked. He was the most important surgeon in town, the man made high six-figures.
"I guess, I don't know her dad's last name. She lives in the house with the yellow flowers on
the porch, the ones you always say you like." Lucy explained.
Judy looked delighted. This was great. If she was Dr. Diaz's daughter Russell would maybe overlook the fact that she's Latina and that her parents are not married. "Okay. Where are you going?" Judy asked, now interested.
"We're just going to the Lima Bean before heading to the school, I want to show her around town. I have to take pictures for the school paper and she has a soccer game." Lucy explained. She didn't want to talk to her mom anymore, she was tired of her attitude.
"Do you want me to take you girls?" Judy asked, maybe she could get to know this Santana. This was an important connection for Russell to have, knowing doctors would only make him more powerful.
"That's really not necessary mom, we're walking. I want to show her the town." Lucy explained nervously, she wanted to avoid her mom being near Santana.
"Okay, now go see your friend, she's waiting for you. We don't want to make a bad impression." Judy scolded and walked out.
Lucy let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding. She didn't know what to make of the interaction. She looked at herself in the mirror again, grimaced and walked out the door.
"I didn't know you had a sister." Santana said as they arrived at the Lima Bean. They had walked for ten minutes, talking about the failure that was the dinner the night before.
"H-how do you-" Lucy asked, nervous. She didn't like talking about her sister, especially since the people who brought her up always liked to compare her to Frannie.
"I saw a picture in your house, I assumed you were the baby with a big smile and your sister was the toddler who was clearly glaring at you." Santana commented with a smile.
"Y-yeah." That picture was one that no one ever noticed, it was practically hidden behind all the other pictures of them as a happy family. For some reason that picture had stayed there, maybe because it was one of the few that had Lucy in them.
"Based on your reaction I'm going to assume you guys don't get along?" Santana asked as they made their way to the line that formed in front of the cashier.
"No, not really. She was never nice, I think she hated having a sibling to share the attention with. Not that she did that, she had the attention on her most of the time." Lucy explained bitterly. "Her name's Frannie, she's ten years older than me. I guess that's also why we didn't get along, when I was learning how to read she was bringing boys over for dinner."
Santana let out a short laugh. "I never had siblings before, and Rachel isn't exactly my sister. But I kind of get it, she's always trying to bring attention to herself and off me."
"She's so annoying." Lucy muttered.
"Yeah, it's probably because my father spoiled her." Santana said as it was finally their turn to order. "Hi, I'll just get an orange juice and a bagel." She ordered and turned to Lucy.
"I-I'll have a coffee." Lucy ordered. She saw that Santana paid for both their drinks and she blushed. "You didn't have to do that."
"Do what?" The brunette asked as she sat down at a nearby table.
"Pay for my drink."
"It's really nothing, consider it my apology for yesterday." Santana said with a smile.
Santana was warming up with the team, even if she wasn't going to be a starter in the game, she wanted to be warmed up already. She saw Lucy with the school camera taking some practice shots of the team. She smiled and waved at her before focusing again. Santana knew this was the first game of the season, but she had to make an impression so they would let her start in the next game.
After the warm up she sat down on the bench, feeling like a failure. The whole team was against her, that's why she hadn't made the starting team. In practice her teammates wouldn't pass her the ball, so there was no way that she could show the coach what she could do.
"Santana, hey." She heard someone talk to her. She had been sulking from her place on the bench, so she hadn't been paying attention. The game hadn't even started.
"Shelby?" She asked, confused. "What are you doing here?"
"We got here early, Finn's game doesn't start for another hour, and I convinced your father to watch your game and then go to the football game." She explained.
"H-how did you know I was playing?" She asked, frowning. This couldn't be happening to her.
"Did you think I wouldn't know what happens in the school?" Shelby asked with a playful smile.
"Yes." Santana answered honestly. Shelby seemed convinced that she knew exactly what goes on in the school, but she was still unaware that her daughter was a menace. "I'm not even starting, you shouldn't watch the game. The coach will probably not put me in the game at all." Santana tried to reason. She didn't want her father at her games.
"Don't be silly, we want to support you." Shelby said with a friendly smile. If she wasn't her step-mother, Santana would probably like her. "Your dad is already up in the stands."
"You should probably go too, the game's about to start." Santana said. Shelby did as she suggested and the latina saw her father scowling in the stands. "Great, just fucking great." She muttered.
They lost, and Santana had been stuck to the bench the whole game. She had even begged the coach to give her a chance, but she had been ignored. Santana was so angry, she was the starter centre-forward in her other school. Her father had stood there the whole game just scowling. Not only had she not been in the field, but the team also lost. Now her father would never make an appearance at her games again. Carlos had left as soon as the final whistle had sounded, with Shelby in tow. She was sure they were going to Finn's game.
"Hey." Lucy said as she approached her.
"Hey." Santana responded in a small voice.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, I guess I'm just disappointed. I thought I would at least get to play five minutes." Santana said, shaking her head.
"Yeah, I'm sorry." Lucy said, biting her lip. "I got some cool pictures though, if you wanna help me choose for the school paper."
"We're gonna make it to the school paper even if we lost?" Santana asked, confused. In her last school, only the teams who won made it to the paper.
"Yeah, there's barely any winning teams, and the football team always makes the front page for some reason and their record from last season was 12-0."
"They didn't even win one game?" Santana asked, surprised. She had never heard of a team that hadn't won any games.
"No, it's been years since they have. Last season they didn't even score a single point." Quinn explained. "Do you wanna look at the pictures?" Lucy offered.
"Sure. But we should probably go somewhere else, I don't feel like being around the team."
"Do you mind watching the football game for a minute? I'm supposed to at least take one picture." Lucy asked.
"Yeah, sure. It'll probably make me feel better."
They walked towards the football field while Lucy showed Santana all the pictures she had taken. Lucy had a blush on her face as Santana watched over her work.
"You took some great pictures, even if we lost they still look badass. And that picture of me warming up looks cool as hell. You're really great. I'm sure you can even make the football team look at least decent." Santana said.
"Th-thanks." Lucy muttered, blushing harder.
"But seriously, these are awesome. Do you take pictures of other stuff too?" She asked.
"Not really. I don't have a good camera, so the pictures I take always end up looking awful. And the school doesn't let me borrow this one for more than the events. So not really." Lucy explained.
"That sucks. Do you edit them too?" Santana asked her, interested in her friend's hobby.
"Yeah, I think I'm getting better at it. I usually don't like to edit them, but the people from the school's paper think it fits their 'aesthetic' better."
"Well I think they're great just like this." Santana complimented.
They had arrived at the football field. It looked like the offensive team was getting on the field. They could see that the game was in the second quarter and the Titans were losing 37-0. The girls made their way to the sidelines so Lucy could take the pictures. Santana just stared at her until finally Finn called a play. As soon as the ball was in his hands he hesitated. He stood there looking out to the field and got tackled heavily.
Santana winced, "I thought the whole point of the game was to avoid getting tackled and stuff."
Lucy laughed. "I take it you don't know much about football."
"No, not really. But I am right, aren't I? That was a horrible play?" She asked her.
"Yeah it was." Lucy said, taking a couple of pictures. "But at least it'll make a nice picture."
Santana chuckled and spent the rest of the game staring at Lucy while she took pictures.
That actually took much longer than I thought it would. I don't know. I'm writing and reading other stuff on the side so I'm taking longer to write this.
