As the reality of departure settled in, Talin's gaze drifted towards the bright sunlight outside, her expression a mix of anticipation and anxiety. She knew she needed to return home soon, eager to see her parents yet dreading the confrontation with her father over her romantic choices, and well, everything else. She turned to Astarion with a worried frown "I need to get back home soon, but the sun... We should wait. Seriously, Astarion, those sewers? Can we just... not do that, ever?
"Come now, don't be so dramatic," he teased, but there was a hint of relief in his voice. He wasn't exactly thrilled about the sewer journey either. "I'm happy to wait here. It might be for the best."
"What? Why? Her brow furrowed in confusion.
"I wouldn't want to cause a stir with your family, my love." He offered a gentle smile. "All I'm saying is we don't need to rush, let them adjust."
"No, you're coming with me," she countered, "I... I can't do this alone," Her voice lowered, a plea for support. "Besides, I don't plan on hiding."
"We're not hiding, my sweet. But you're clearly anxious. Maybe take a moment, and just get back home to your family for now."
"I can't wait to go home. But I want you to come with me. I'll feel much better with you by my side."
"Alright, alright. Don't fret. We'll depart at nighttime."
"Then I suppose you won't need my company," Shadowheart joked, "I will stay here, with my parents, until I figure out the next steps."
"Wait, you're not coming? But, you have to come. I want you to. You and your parents could stay until you sort things out".
"No, I can't. I would not want to impose."
"Please. You and your parents will always be welcomed."
"There is no way out of this Shadowheart." Astarion teased.
"I should've known," Shadowheart chuckled, "Alright, fine. I accept your invitation. And thank you."
A squeal of delight escaped Talin's lips as she crushed her in a hug. "I'm so excited!" She gasped as she pulled back, "We'll drink wine, we'll talk in the gardens under the stars." Talin continued, her smile widening.
Shadowheart chuckled. "Well, you should've started with that."
"Alright, now that that's settled, we should gather our things and prepare." Talin said.
Nodding in agreement, the group went to their rooms and packed their belongings. As they were getting ready the sun started to go down. It was time to go.
As they reached the Upper City, a sense of dread filled Talin's heart. She stopped. "Are they still alive? Has my home survived this horror?" She voiced her fears aloud, her words cutting through the chaos around them.
Astarion and Shadowheart, exchanged somber glances. Shadowheart stepped closer and put her hand on Talin's shoulder. "From what you told me about them I have no doubt they are all right. You'll meet them soon," her touch was reassuring.
As they made their way forward, Talin was momentarily caught by a glimpse of something in the distance. It was unmistakably the divine light reflecting off her brother's sword as he kneeled, leaning on it with his head bowed in respect to the fallen.
"Thalion," Talin whispered, her voice barely a thread of sound. Gathering her strength, she called out louder, "Thalion!" At the sound of her voice, Thalion lifted his head, his expression transitioning through surprise, confusion, and then happiness.
"Talin?" he exclaimed. The moment he recognized her, all hesitation vanished, and in an instant, they were running towards each other. They embraced tightly in the middle of the devastated street, holding onto each other as if to affirm the reality of their reunion. Tears of happiness and relief streamed down both their cheeks as they held each other.
"Gods, I thought we lost you," Thalion said, his voice thick with emotion. Since Talin had been abducted by the mind flayers, her fate had been unknown, and for them she had simply vanished without a trace.
"It's been such a long journey, more than I can even begin to explain right now. But seeing you here, safe—I can't tell you how much relief that brings me." Talin whispered.
Thalion held her tightly, the relief in his voice palpable. "I've been so worried, Talin. We all have. Every day without a word... it's been unbearable. Just tell me you're alright, that's all that matters right now."
"I'm fine, Thalion, truly. It's been a harrowing journey, but I'm here now, and I found you." Talin's heart ached with the reunion. She pulled back slightly to meet her brother's gaze, "Are father and mother alright?" she asked urgently.
Thalion nodded, "They're both fine. Don't worry." he reassured her with a gentle smile. "Father was leading a group of soldiers near the Black Dragon Gate. I was defending the Watch Citadel myself. Mother helped the ones who couldn't fight find safe refuge. The armies of the Absolute were swarming all around us. People transforming to mind-flayers," his voice trailed off, "it was chaos. I've never seen such evil, Talin. And then, this ginormous brain thing fell from the sky into the Chionthar. After that, they all started to retreat."
Talin sighed in relief as she held her brother's hands. "Thank goodness. And what of our home?"
"The mansion stands, but the left wing is completely in ruin. Rebuilding is imminent."
"Thalion… I'd like you to meet my friends." she said as she turned to the others, "They stood by my side all this time, and we've been through so much together. There were others, but they…" she seemed lost in thought for a moment then she snapped out of it.
"Astarion, Shadowheart, this is Thalion, my older brother," she said, placing a gentle hand on Thalion's shoulder. "He means the world to me and has been my protector for as long as I can remember."
Thalion turned to the others, his presence a slight contrast yet a perfect complement to his sister, Talin. Where she embodied the unpredictability of a storm, Thalion was the steadfast mountain, tall, strong, and embodying the virtues of a paladin. His long, silvery white hair, reminiscent of Talin's, cascaded down his back, stirred by the gentle wind. His eyes, a deep shade of blue, sparkled with innate kindness, reflecting his unwavering devotion to hope and the paladin's path.
He was clad in finely crafted armor, both elegant and functional, forged from mithral with intricate engravings that symbolized his commitment to Lathander, the Morninglord, god of dawn, renewal, and rebirth. The armor shone under the moonlight, its surface almost glowing with a divine aura. Draped over his armor was a long, flowing cape, the color of the midnight sky, enhancing his noble bearing and the visible aura of divinity that marked those dedicated to the paladin's path. His features, soft yet well-defined, carried the grace of their elven heritage.
Thalion offered a polite, if somewhat weary, smile. "It's an honor to meet you," he said, bowing his head slightly. He turned to his sister, "Come Talin, let's go home. Mother and father will be thrilled. We've all missed you so much."
"Yes. We were on our way there. Let's move."
"Talin, may I have a quick moment with you?" Astarion chuckled awkwardly.
"Of course." she offered a hesitant smile as they moved away. Thalion's gaze lingered on Astarion, a flicker of curiosity edged with a hint of suspicion in his cool blue eyes.
Feeling Astarion's discomfort, Talin turned to him with a questioning look. "Is everything all right?"
"You never told me your brother was a paladin!" Astarion blurted, his voice a touch higher than usual. "A follower of Lathander no less. Don't you know what this means?" His voice rose slightly. "By the Dawnbringer, he is duty-bound to kill me on sight, Talin! And most likely he would!"
"What are you talking about, of course I told you." She was confused and surprised. "Remember the monastery in the mountain pass, Rosymon?"
"So that's why you knew so much about that monastery," he remarked, a hint of realization in his voice.
"Well, yes. I told you all that. Why are you so surprised?" Talin replied, her eyebrows raised in mild exasperation.
"You did?" He chuckled nervously, running a hand through his hair. "Well, I didn't always listen to you speak back then."
Talin gave him a scornful look mixed with a flicker of surprise, like she was expecting an explanation.
"Well, you always rambled about something or asked too many questions. I didn't think it was all important." Astarion said defensively, his voice pitching up a touch as he spoke. His charming smile still softened the words.
"Hey!" Talin feigned offense. "Someone had to keep things interesting," a playful smirk tugging at her lips. "Besides, he's duty-bound to eradicate evil, and you're not completely evil, are you?" she teased.
A wry smile touched his lips. "You wound me, darling. I am just a misunderstood vampire spawn, trying to survive."
"Don't worry. Nothing will happen. Thalion is the most reasonable person I know. He will never do anything that hurts me."
He sighed, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Alright, if you say so. But if anything happens I'm holding you responsible."
A playful grin tugged at her lips. "How can you hold me responsible if you're gone, darling?"
Astarion's lips curled into a sneer, but his eyes twinkled with amusement.
A longing for familiarity tugged at Talin. Turning to her brother, she offered a soft smile. "Let's get home."
