Chapter 70: Clash! The Battle of the Magic Knights Squad Captains!
Before the Captains' meeting...
"Other than the Captain of the Blue Rose Knights, everyone is present." Marx reported.
"So, Charlotte's late?" Julius sipped his tea. 'She arrived late to the Star Festival with Yami. I wonder what happened this time."
"By the way, it seems the Blue Rose Knights are trying to plan a joint training session with the Black Bulls." Marx recalled. "Perhaps this is related."
"A joint training session?" Julius mused. "I just had a great idea. The Kingdom's citizens are still emotionally and physically exhausted from the Eye of the Midnight Sun's attacks. I'm sure they're worried about whether the royal family can protect them or not. We need to reassure them that the Magic Knights have the strength to protect them and raise the morale of the Captains and Magic Knights, too. So that we can face the impending threat of the Spade Kingdom and the devil. I'm going to have the Captains fight each other."
Sometime later...
"We will now commence a team battle between the Magic Knight Captains." King Augustus made the opening statement.
"The rules are simple." Rhiannon added. "The time limit is 30 minutes. The team that destroys the enemy team's crystal while protecting theirs is the winner. As an exception, this battle between Captains is being broadcast throughout the entire Kingdom. However, due to certain unforeseeable circumstances, the Captain of the Aqua Deer will not be participating. Captains, a final warning: do not go overboard. Otherwise, anything goes."
"Begin." the referee signaled.
On the battlefield...
"World Tree Magic: Magic Tree Descent." William made the first move.
"Do not touch the World Tree Magic." Kaiser cautioned, fending off the tree with Nozel.
"Slash Magic: Death Scythe." Jack, using the 'Leg Strength Boost' reinforcement magic, shot towards the tree roots and slice through one of the roots like a buzz saw.
"Dark Magic: Dark Cloaked..." Yami readied his attack, only to have his wrist held in place by Charlotte's briars.
Seeing William throw roots spears at the trapped Yami, Nozel and Kaiser sprang into action: Kaiser using his 'Vortex Magic' to break the ground apart into giant cubes and allowing Nozel to grab the earth constructs with his 'Mercury Magic' and throw them at William and Charlotte.
Dorothy then came to Charlotte's rescue and sent the earth chucks coming at her into the 'Glamor World', only to her eyes widen when she realized Jack had been hiding behind the earth cubes, the 'Slice Magic' user was poised to attack.
"I guess this is never going to be simple." Fuegoleon noted, his fire wall forcing Jack to retreat.
"Indeed." William agreed. "Then, we'll just have to follow our plan."
'Let us strengthen our defense of our crystal." Kaiser suggested, after Yami and Jack ran off.
Just as Yami and Jack faced off against William and Charlotte in the forest, Fuegoleon and Nozel took their fight onto the water.
"Mercury Magic: Silver Rain." Nozel let loose his rain of mercury.
Salamander fended off the rain platter with its 'Salamander's Breath'.
"You should know that this spell is not powerful enough to defeat me." Fuegoleon reminded.
"And you should know as well that I wouldn't run away without a plan." Nozel trapped his rival in a spike ball of mercury.
"In that case," Fuegoleon wasted no time in freeing himself. "I shall burn you and your meddlesome plan to ash."
"Nozel-dono, I shall assist you." Kaiser shielded Nozel with his 'Vortex Magic'.
"I have a plan." Nozel told Kaiser. "Follow my lead."
In the forest, Yami and Jack were blocking off William's and Charlotte's guerrilla attacks.
"Dark Magic: Black Hole." Yami sucked in Charlotte's vines with his spell.
"This is..." Fuegoleon blinked, Nozel's 'Silver Star of Execution' was starting to take shape around him.
"Slash Magic: Death Scythe: Lunatic Slash." Jack unleashed his flurry of slashes.
"Dark Magic: Dark Cloaked Avidya Slash." Yami released his attack at the same time, both attacks decimating a portion of the forest.
"Mercury Creation Magic: Silver Star of Execution." Nozel locked Fuegoleon and Salamander in his mercury cage.
"As long as we made you use up some magic." William smiled, activating his 'Great Tree Mistilteinn', forcing Yami and Jack to dodge the growing tree.
"Hi!" Dorothy sang, appearing next to Yami and sending him into the 'Glamour World'.
"We need to avoid any more setbacks." Nozel frowned, realized Yami had been sent into the ' Glamour World'. "We will take care of him right here and now."
"Leave this to me." Kaiser assured. "What is he going to do with all those flames?" he wondered, when Fuegoleon had Salamander breathe out flames continuously.
"He can't be..." Nozel looked down at the lake, the water started to boil. "Though the flames won't reach us, the heat will... but what is he... how hot is he planning to..."
With a roar, Fuegoleon evaporated all of the lake's water. Taking advantage of the steam's cover, he took out Kaiser with a punch to the stomach and cracking the crystal Nozel was guarding.
"I'm not done yet." Jack muttered, flying back to his team's side, only to be trapped by a 'Mistilteinn Seed'.
Still guarding his team's crystal, Nozel was dodging William's and Fuegoleon's attacks on his silver eagle, until one of Fuegoleon's fireballs hit one of the eagle's claws and sending the Mercury Magic user to the ground.
"It's weak, but I can sense Jack-dono's mana." Kaiser blocked off William's vines.
"So, you still have enough strength to keep struggling." William remarked, the tree root in front of him blocking off the 'Silver Blades' Nozel tossed at him.
"Mercury Magic: Silver Shining Regal Spear." Nozel fired off his spear at Jack's direction.
"I cannot hold out much longer." Kaiser winced, knowing his 'Vortex Magic' was no match for Salamander's flames.
In response, Jack broke free of his tree prison and sliced Salamander's fireball into half.
"We have no other chances." Nozel told his teammates. "We're ending this now."
"Not happening." William snapped, seeing Nozel, Jack and Kaiser were powering up a Compound Magic spell to fight against Salamander who had grown after burning his and Charlotte's magic.
"As a royal who protects the masses and as the Captain of the Silver Eagles, I cannot let myself lose so pathetically." Nozel swore.
"Mana Zone: Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Equinox!" Yami freed himself from the ' Glamour World'.
At the debriefing meeting later...
"That was such a fantastic battle." Julius gushed. "I can't believe I got to see an exchange of magic like that. Especially that last one. To think that Yami's 'Dimension Slash' ended up by slicing both teams' crystals."
"You made us do all that and it's a draw?" Yami was not amused.
"Pretty much." Rhiannon grinned. "You did great as well, Marx. The battle against the Spade Kingdom and the devil is drawing close. Please use this battle to propel you and your Magic Knights to even greater heights."
