Two men stay sat by the stream, with one on a rock and the other on the grass by the stream. A stream trickles water softly over the pebbles while the sun overhead warms the grass through the screen of leaves. The air is warm but crisp, feeling almost sweet.
The man in red, hunched over, scribbles things on his notebook. Every so often, he tucks a hair strand behind his ears to get it out of his eyes. His mouth hangs open slightly as he continues to write, putting notes and nonsense on the page. He glances over to the other man, staring at him. He watches him with fixed wonder. Swallowing, he closes his notebook and sets his things down in the grass. The worn brown boots he wore were taken off as well as his socks as he walked over to the other man, but not too close. He stood upon the bank. The water felt cold, but not offensively so. The man in white looks up at him. Sitting there, resting his arms on his knees, he grins. "Going home?" He asks. "No." The answer is almost an after thought, feeling as though he doesn't need to answer. He puts his hands in his pockets, looking at what the other man was looking at earlier. "Hey, Harrison," the man says, interrupting Harrison's thoughts, "wanna sit over here?" He gives it a thought. He knows his friend wants him to sit over there, of course.
He crouches down without a word and rolls up his pant legs. It was a bit difficult, with the texture being thicker, but it worked regardless. Standing up, he walks through the water over to his friend, sitting on a rock across from him. His friend clears his throat while scratching at his chin. Harrison watches him as he fiddles with some pebbles in his hand, rubbing them against each other and around in his hand. The rocks emit a soft clack, causing his friend's nose to twitch before he puts down the stones. Harrison decides to put his notebook and pencil in his pocket, shuffling around a bit to get them in there properly. They both continue to sit there in silence.
After a while, a sweet hum comes from Harrison's throat. He leans forward and lets the water run over his hand as he continues the tune. His friend sighs and leans back, letting his legs go further in to the water as he rests his back against the warm rock. He folds his arms over his chest as he closes his eyes, letting the sun rest on his skin. Harrison looks over at him, his tune stopping, but only for a moment. He continues as he watches his friend. How he breathes, how the sun makes his hair look like a deep honey. How he wished he could see how his eyes looked at him, how sweet they are in the sun. Leaning out, he holds his hand above his friend's face, letting the water drip on to it. The man's nose twitches but he doesn't react. Instead, his head tilts and rests on its side as he sighs contently. The warmth of the sun and the softness of the water had let him relax, and he didn't appear to be bothered by anything. Harrison puts his hand down as he went back to his spot, mimicking the same position his friend had earlier.
As he watches the water, something nags him. He grimaces and stands up, looking over at his friend. He walks over and sits down next to him, casting a shadow over him. He reaches his hand close to the man.
"Calleb," he whispers. He waits for a reaction, but doesn't get one. He reaches closer and brushes it against the side of his friend's face. The feeling of his sun-warmed skin and the smoothness of being freshly shaved felt nice on his hand. He looks down, waiting for a reaction. He sighs, knowing his friend has drifted off to sleep.
Harrison leans back, laying down next to Calleb. He watches the leaves sway ever so slightly in the wind while he thinks. He raises his left hand up, turning it as he stares at it, opening and closing it. He puts it up to his own face, feeling how rough his skin feels. Something about this saddens him. Turning his head to Calleb, he watches him through hazy eyes. His eyelids grow heavy, his breathing slow. He rests here together with this man, feeling content somewhere.
"Sleepy?" The voice rings out softly. Harrison opens his eyes wide as he realizes Calleb was looking at him.
"Yeah."
"Wanna get outta here, then?"
"We can stay, just for a bit."
Calleb smiled softly. "Sure." He turned his head and looked up at the leaves again.
"Heh, I hope it doesn't get cold or anything. I saw the weather, but I dunno. I don't think it'd get cold or anything, but just, you know."
"Yeah." Harrison turned and looked up at the leaves as well. His arms layed at his sides while Calleb's still layed folded across his chest.
"Can you say something? About anything."
"Huh? Oh, sure. Uhm. Well, I don't know." Calleb grew confused as he thought about what to say. "Did you know that strawberries are in season?"
"Are they?"
"Oh, hell yeah. I've got some growing at a, uh, friends house and he says he don't mind if I take some as long as I help out around with the plants. Oh yeah, I'll be helping out." He rubs his nose. "Uh...it'll be like, next weekend, if ya, ya'know, wanna swing by?" Calleb looked at Harrison, almost awaiting an answer. Harrison thought for a moment. He didn't answer, only watching the leaves sway some more. He adjusted himself, leaning closer to Calleb. He hoped it was enough of an answer. Calleb coughed and looked over at Harrison. He felt weird in his stomach as he watched him. He swallowed, moving a bit closer as well, letting their shoulders touch. Harrison moved, a bit startled, but he settled down.
He turned his head to Calleb, facing him. He looked away from Calleb's eyes, feeling weird and too close. Calleb blinked slowly, taking in more of his friend's face, feeling nervous the more he took it in. Harrison closed his eyes and moved closer, touching his head against Calleb's as his arm adjusted to lay next to Calleb's body, their fingers touching a little. Calleb wrapped his fingers around Harrison's and lifted his head, sniffing his hair.
"You smell nice..." The words made Harrison feel soft. He squeezed Calleb's hand and felt him squeeze him back. He laid with him there with the sun on their skin. He felt himself feel...calm. His throat felt dry and he tried to swallow.
"Are you…sure this is alright?" He asked apprehensively.
Calleb wet his lips and thought about it, albeit for very shortly. He looked at him awkwardly before clearing his throat. "We could, ah, move else where. I know it's, y'know, a bit…a bit hard to do things like this out here. But, uh, y'know it's…it's nice out here. Nobody else around out here, so…just enjoy yourself."
"Hm," Harrison hummed, "Okay. I hoped you'd say that, honestly. If you had said no, I'd feel a bit disappointed. It is nice out here." His voice was becoming shaky and his shoulders tightened. He let his eyes close as he thought about what they could do later instead of what he was feeling. He sighed, his stomach still uneasy and his head a mess. It was easier to feel fine with all of it, but inside he was so jumpy to do just about anything with him, and that scared him, but he wasn't sure why or for what. Not that he was particularly upset to be here, but he wasn't sure how exactly to explain how he felt. He loved it, really, but at the same time the uneasiness grew worse and worse. His eye twitched and in his head a sharp pain grew largely. His eyes darted away from him when he felt his thoughts tighten and his breath shorten. He chewed the side of his tongue as he felt the fabric of his clothes more and more on his skin. The heat between his and Calleb's hands felt unbearable, and his head felt hot.
Harrison scrambled to his feet, and walked to the bank of the stream. He stumbled down on the ground and took out his notebook again to write in it. His eye twitched as he tried to remember how to write again. Calleb watched him almost surprised, but sat up calmly and decided to mess with the pebbles again. Glancing over at him, Harrison felt a little stupid. How simple his friend was, how easy he was to just forgive stupid things. The more he thought about it, the less bad he felt about the whole thing. He watched him some more before looking down at his paper. It was just full of nothing but dejected and angry scribbles, ruining most of the paper from failed attempts at doing anything. He looked at the thought he was writing down earlier and pressed his pencil against the start of it before he glanced again at Calleb. Watching him muck about was actually nice, and he looked back down at the sentence. His eyelids lowered and he decided to start writing something else instead of just ruining the old thought. He scrawled out nonsense notes slowly, writing everything dragged out as much as possible, drawing the words slowly.
Sighing, he tried to think about why he was upset in the first place. He hated that part, trying to deconstruct his behaviors. Mostly just because it made him feel even stupider and angrier. He fiddled with the pencil and chewed on it as he tried to think.
"Ah…" He thought to himself through some of the noise, "...he's pretty. Of course, my outfit!" He looked down at his outfit. He sat there looking at his outfit before realizing that idea was stupid. He thought some more and looked over at Calleb this time. Narrowing his eyes, he watched him continuing to lay there like he was earlier. He chewed the pencil and bit down, leaving another mark in it before he took it out of his mouth and drew out a few circles.
"I think I got scared he was gonna hit me. Right…he'd do something like that if I had done something wrong, wouldn't he?" His nose scrunched up and he thought some more about it. "No, he's nice. Nice boys don't act like that. Maybe I would of deserved it…no, no. No…he likes me, I think." He blinked, and decided he was satisfied enough with that answer; mostly because he didn't want to think about this anymore than he had to, as the day was nice as is and derailing everything for something dumb was worthless to him. He let his voice fall from his mouth with a, "let's go."
"Hmm..? Well, alright." Calleb got up and shook his feet dry as he got on the bank. He looked over at Harrison as he put away his things and was already putting his shiny black dress shoes back on. Calleb scratched his neck and watched him unroll his pant legs. He decided to do the same, and leaned over, copying what Harrison had done. He wet his lips again and decided to question Harrison. "You okay? Freaked out a little on me there. Is it something I did?"
"It's…" His voice faltered a little, "I don't know; just happens. It's fine."
Calleb reached out his hand and tilted his head, waiting for him to answer. Harrison looked at him and nodded, and Calleb put a hand on his shoulder, patting it. "Ah, that's alright, that's alright…" His voice grew softer as he rubbed his shoulder, "Just… talk to me about it later when you feel like it, okay? I know that, this is, uh, y'know, new."
His nervous voice made Harrison smile, and he coughed. "Yeah." He focused on Calleb's hand for a bit before speaking up again. "Why'd you just sit there?"
"Ah, well… I guess I just thought you were like someone else I know. I know when he gets like that you just gotta let him have his space, and he comes right over to you afterwards. So, just figured, y'know? 'Course, it's not always like that, sometimes it's different but uh, just figured." He shrugged his shoulders and gave a small grin. "Hope that makes sense."
Harrison nodded. He touched Calleb's hand gently with his fingertips. The both of them decided it was time to leave. Calleb kept his hold on Harrison as the both of them walked back to his truck.
Calleb let go of Harrison and walked over to open the door for him. He watched him get inside before closing the door and crawling in the driver's seat with a squeak. He shut the door and shook his head before rolling his shoulders.
"Rocks kinda suck to lay down on, don't they?" He smiled at Harrison. "Feels weird now to be in this seat." Harrison didn't respond, only nodding and leaning against the door, watching Calleb as he turned on the truck. He turned his gaze to the outside of his window, and he looked at the clearing. He watched the leaves move gently on the branches of the trees, and felt his eyes get tired. The radio was turned down low and the sun warmed the seats of the car. He shifted around a bit before resting his head next to Calleb's thigh in the middle of the seat. He drew his legs up on the seat and turned so that they wouldn't hang off. He looked up at Calleb before Calleb smiled at him and brushed his hair out of his face. He smiled back at him and let his eyes close, letting himself fall asleep on the ride back home.
