Chapter 5: The Arrival of the Hokage and Konohamaru
It was a quiet afternoon at the Senju residence. The warm rays of the sun bathed the house, while the wind softly whispered through the trees in the garden. Naruto and Sasuki were in the living room, slowly adjusting to daily life in their new shared home. Several days had passed since the mission at the farm, and although the routine was beginning to settle in, they both knew that living together was still a process of constant adaptation.
Naruto, always full of energy, was reorganizing his collection of scrolls and ninja tools. Sasuki, on the other hand, was sitting in a corner, reviewing an old scroll of Uchiha Clan techniques she had found in the house's library. The atmosphere was one of contained calm, but without much direct interaction.
Suddenly, the sound of the front door echoed through the house, pulling them both out of their thoughts. Naruto dropped one of his scrolls, while Sasuki looked up with curiosity. They weren't expecting visitors, and although the Senju residence was relatively isolated, visits were a rare occurrence.
"Who could that be?" Naruto muttered to himself as he hurriedly stood up and headed towards the door.
When he opened it, he found himself face-to-face with the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, who stood at the entrance with his usual smile, radiating a mixture of authority and kindness. Beside him, a small boy with a mischievous and energetic expression was bouncing on his feet, clearly excited about something.
"Old man Hokage!" exclaimed Naruto, his voice a mix of surprise and excitement. "I didn't expect to see you here! What brings you to our house?"
Hiruzen smiled warmly at Naruto's reaction.
"Hello, Naruto," he replied in his calm, fatherly tone. "I thought it would be good to visit you both and see how you're adjusting to life at the Senju residence. Also, someone here was very excited to meet you."
The Hokage placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, who immediately stepped forward, looking at Naruto with bright eyes.
"Hi!" exclaimed the boy with a mischievous smile. "I'm Konohamaru! I've heard a lot about you!"
Naruto looked at the boy with surprise and slight confusion, but he couldn't help but feel flattered by the child's energy. Although he had never interacted directly with Konohamaru before, he knew that he was the Hokage's grandson from some conversations with Sasuki, and his uninhibited attitude instantly made him likeable.
"Oh, hello, Konohamaru!" Naruto replied with a smile. "It's great to meet you! What brings you here?"
"I wanted to meet the ninja that Grandpa says is the coolest!" said Konohamaru, puffing out his chest with pride. "And I also wanted to see if you're as strong as they say!"
Naruto, clearly amused by Konohamaru's enthusiasm, laughed and crouched down to be at eye level with the boy.
"That sounds fun!" he responded, patting him on the head. "Let the next Hokage show you! For real!"
Meanwhile, Sasuki had discreetly approached the door, observing the scene with a neutral expression. When Hiruzen saw her, he nodded respectfully, and she returned the gesture with a slight nod.
"It's an honor to have you in our home, Hokage-sama," Sasuki said in her usual calm tone. "Is there anything specific you'd like to discuss with us?"
"Thank you, Sasuki," Hiruzen replied, noting her polite but distant manner. "It's nothing urgent, I just thought I'd visit and make sure everything is going well. Also, I thought Konohamaru could learn something from spending time with you both."
Naruto, who was enjoying Konohamaru's attention, straightened up and invited them both inside.
"Of course, Hokage-sama!" he said enthusiastically, imitating Sasuki's formality. "Please come in! We can chat for a bit, and I'll take care of Konohamaru."
Hiruzen nodded and entered the house, closely followed by Konohamaru, who kept looking at Naruto with admiration. Sasuki closed the door behind them as Naruto led the Hokage and his grandson into the living room.
Once inside, Hiruzen settled on one of the floor cushions, adopting a relaxed posture. Sasuki did the same, sitting quietly near him. Naruto, on the other hand, couldn't stop smiling as he watched Konohamaru explore the room with curiosity, touching everything within reach.
"You have a really big house, Naruto!" commented Konohamaru, inspecting an old statue. "You must be super rich!"
Naruto laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck.
"It's not that much, Konohamaru," he said. "I'm just taking care of this house, but it's a great place to live. I'm still getting used to it."
Hiruzen observed the interaction between Naruto and his grandson with a smile, clearly pleased with the bond forming between them.
"Naruto, I'm glad to see you're adjusting well to life here," Hiruzen said, turning his attention to his young pupil. "This residence has a great history, and it's important that you preserve it. But it's also important that you forge your own path here."
"I will, Hokage-sama," Naruto replied seriously. "I want to make this place a home, not just for me, but for Sasuki as well."
Sasuki, who had remained silent until then, nodded slightly but added nothing more. Although she respected the Hokage, she always maintained an emotional distance, partly due to her own desire to protect herself.
While Hiruzen and Naruto talked, Konohamaru began to fidget, unable to stay still for long. He approached Naruto, tugging at his sleeve.
"Naruto, can you teach me some ninja tricks?" he asked, his eyes full of expectations. "I want to be as strong as you!"
Naruto, delighted by the request, smiled broadly.
"Of course, Konohamaru!" he exclaimed. "I'll teach you some things, but first, you need to know that being a ninja isn't just about learning tricks. It's about training hard and never giving up."
Konohamaru nodded energetically, clearly excited about the idea of learning from Naruto. Meanwhile, Hiruzen watched the interaction with silent interest, knowing that his grandson could learn a lot from Naruto, not just about being a ninja, but also about the Will of Fire.
Naruto began showing Konohamaru some basic moves, making them look more spectacular than they actually were to impress the boy. Konohamaru followed him eagerly, imitating each move seriously, though his execution was clumsy and imprecise.
"Wow, you're really good, Konohamaru!" said Naruto, encouraging him. "With a little more practice, you'll be an amazing ninja."
Konohamaru smiled, clearly motivated by Naruto's words. However, his attention quickly shifted to other objects in the room, and soon he started to pester Naruto with little tricks and pranks. He tried sneaking up behind him to tickle him or exaggeratedly mimicked his gestures, causing both of them to burst into laughter.
Naruto, far from being annoyed, joined in the fun, chasing Konohamaru around the room while pretending to be an enemy ninja. Their carefree laughter filled the house, lightening the atmosphere.
Sasuki, although initially watching with indifference, couldn't help but feel a slight curiosity as she saw the bond developing between Naruto and Konohamaru. Although she didn't show it openly, the scene reminded her of a part of her own childhood that she had left behind long ago. For a moment, she allowed herself to relax a little, letting Naruto and Konohamaru's laughter envelop her.
However, Konohamaru's antics soon interrupted the more serious conversation Hiruzen and Sasuki were trying to have. As they discussed the responsibility of preserving the Senju Clan's heritage, Konohamaru unexpectedly tackled Naruto, causing them both to fall to the floor in a tangle of laughter and play.
"Konohamaru, you're a sneaky ninja!" Naruto said, laughing as he tried to get up. "But you didn't catch me!"
Konohamaru, not giving up, continued to pester Naruto, repeatedly interrupting Hiruzen and Sasuki's conversation with his childish questions and his desire to involve Naruto in his game. However, far from being annoyed, Hiruzen smiled indulgently, watching his grandson have fun.
"Konohamaru, you should let Naruto and Sasuki talk with the Hokage-sama for a bit," Naruto said, trying to calm the boy.
"But it's more fun playing with you, Naruto!" Konohamaru responded with a big smile. "We can talk later!"
Naruto laughed at the response, while Sasuki simply sighed, though not with annoyance, but with a resignation that bordered on acceptance.
"Alright, alright, but just a little more," Naruto agreed, knowing it would be hard to convince Konohamaru otherwise.
Sasuki, observing the dynamic, decided to intervene gently.
"Konohamaru, have you ever seen a shuriken up close?" she asked, pulling one of the shurikens from her pouch.
Konohamaru froze in his tracks, his eyes widening at the sight of the weapon.
"Wow, that's amazing!" he exclaimed, running over to Sasuki to get a closer look.
Sasuki took the opportunity to divert the boy's attention, showing him how to use a shuriken and explaining some basic
techniques. Naruto, taking advantage of the truce, got up from the floor and dusted off his clothes.
Hiruzen watched the interaction with a smile, noting how, without realizing it, Sasuki had started to open up a bit more, even if only in small gestures. He knew that the bonds between them were still fragile, but moments like this were what would begin to strengthen them.
"I'm glad to see that you're adapting well to this new life," Hiruzen said, breaking the brief silence. "Life at the Senju residence isn't easy, but it's an opportunity for both of you to grow and learn from each other."
Naruto nodded, feeling a renewed determination in his words.
"We will, Hokage-sama!" he replied seriously. "Sasuki and I will support each other and take care of this house. I promise we won't let you down!"
Sasuki, though more reserved, also nodded, showing a slight sign of agreement.
Hiruzen smiled, satisfied with both of their responses.
"I'm sure you won't," he said calmly. "Just remember that you're in this together, and learning to trust each other is the key to any success."
The afternoon was fading at the Senju residence, and the golden light of the sun softly filtered through the windows, illuminating the room where Naruto and Sasuki were with the Third Hokage. The visit had been mostly light up to that point, with Konohamaru bringing a sense of innocent joy. However, as Konohamaru amused himself playing with Naruto and the apples Sasuki had begun peeling, Hiruzen decided to address a more serious matter that couldn't be postponed any longer.
Hiruzen, observing Naruto and Sasuki's behavior, cleared his throat to get their attention, his expression adopting a more solemn tone.
"Naruto, Sasuki," he began in his calm, reflective tone. "There's something important I need to discuss with you, something that can't wait any longer."
Naruto, who was helping Konohamaru peel an apple, looked up, his smile slowly fading as he noticed the change in the Hokage's tone. Sasuki, for her part, stopped her movements and turned her gaze to Hiruzen, sensing that what was coming wouldn't be an easy conversation.
"What's going on, Hokage-sama?" Naruto asked, a mix of curiosity and concern in his voice.
Hiruzen looked at them both as if evaluating how to approach the topic as delicately as possible.
"I've been observing how you've been adapting to your life at the Senju residence," he began, "and I believe it's time to talk about the commitment you both have."
Naruto felt a pang of discomfort upon hearing those words. He had tried not to think too much about the arranged marriage, focusing on his daily tasks and improving as a ninja. But now, with the Hokage bringing it up directly, the reality of the situation hit him hard.
"Hokage-sama…" Naruto began, his voice wavering. "About that commitment… is it really necessary? I mean… is there any way to annul it?"
Sasuki, although remaining serene, couldn't help but feel a slight jolt at Naruto's question. It wasn't that she desired this marriage, but the possibility of annulling the commitment was something she hadn't really considered. Her reaction was subtle, a slight hardening of her expression, but Hiruzen noticed it.
The Hokage sighed, knowing that Naruto's question was legitimate but also aware of the complexities surrounding the situation.
"I understand how you feel, Naruto," Hiruzen responded, his tone wise and compassionate. "And I understand that this responsibility is overwhelming for someone so young. However, this marriage was agreed upon not only for personal reasons but also for political and security reasons."
Naruto frowned, clearly confused.
"Political reasons?" he repeated. "But… what does that have to do with us?"
Hiruzen nodded, anticipating that question.
"Sasuki is the last survivor of the Uchiha Clan in Konoha," he explained. "As such, there's a great deal of pressure on her to restore her clan. But she's also vulnerable to those who might try to take advantage of her. This marriage, though difficult to accept, is a way to protect her, as well as the legacy of her clan."
Naruto looked at Sasuki, realizing for the first time the burden she was also carrying. Until that moment, he had been so focused on his own feelings of confusion and uncertainty that he hadn't really considered what this meant for Sasuki. She had lost her family, and now, the future of her clan rested on her shoulders.
"It's not fair that all of this falls on you, Sasuki," Naruto said softly, with a new understanding in his voice. "But… I don't know if I'm ready to take on this responsibility."
Sasuki didn't respond immediately. Although she had rejected the idea of marriage in her mind, the seriousness in Naruto's voice made her reflect. Although she didn't want the commitment either, there was a part of her that understood the need to protect her heritage, her legacy. However, she also felt that, like Naruto, she wasn't ready to face all of this alone.
Hiruzen observed the interaction between them, perceiving the internal struggle of both young people.
"I understand that you don't feel ready," Hiruzen said, with a softness in his voice that reflected his empathy. "But I want you to know that this commitment isn't a trap. It's not something you can't get out of if you really feel it's not the right thing. However, as long as you're not fully able to protect yourselves, and while the political situation is so delicate, it's better to maintain the commitment. It's a way to ensure your safety and well-being, both yours and Konoha's."
Naruto nodded slowly, processing the Hokage's words. He knew that Hiruzen always had the village's well-being in mind, and if he said the commitment was important, there had to be a good reason behind it.
"I understand, Hokage-sama," Naruto finally responded, though his voice still showed uncertainty. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect Sasuki and Konoha, but… I need time to understand all of this."
Hiruzen smiled slightly, pleased with the maturity in Naruto's response.
"That's all I can ask for," he said warmly. "I don't want you to feel that you're alone in this. You have my support and that of the entire village. The most important thing is that you take the time to understand yourselves and your roles in this situation."
Sasuki, who had been silent for most of the conversation, finally spoke, her voice calm but determined.
"I understand what you're saying, Hokage-sama," she said. "And although I don't want this marriage, I also don't want to endanger my safety or Naruto's. I'll do what's necessary, but like Naruto said, we need time to adjust to this idea."
Hiruzen nodded, satisfied with both of their responses.
"You have all the time you need," he said. "There's no rush. My only hope is that, as you move forward, you can find a way to make this situation work for both of you."
The conversation lingered in the air for a moment, with Naruto and Sasuki absorbing what had been said. The atmosphere in the room, though more serious, wasn't heavy. There was a sense of mutual understanding, an acceptance that, although the road wouldn't be easy, they weren't alone in it.
As the conversation continued, Sasuki began peeling some apples for Konohamaru, who had been sitting quietly next to Naruto, watching the interaction between the "adults" with a mix of curiosity and childlike patience. Sasuki, though she didn't show it openly, took her role as a caretaker in this new dynamic seriously. Although she didn't agree with many things, she understood the importance of taking on responsibilities, something that had been instilled in her from a young age.
Naruto, seeing Sasuki peel the apples with a calmness and skill that only someone very accustomed to the task could show, felt a strange sense of warmth. Although his relationship with Sasuki had been marked by rivalry and differences, there was something in her way of acting in these moments that made him see her in a new light. She was strong, determined, but she also had a softer side, one she rarely showed.
"Here you go, Konohamaru," Sasuki said, handing him a peeled apple.
Konohamaru, who had been listening to the conversation attentively, smiled widely and took the apple.
"Thank you, Sasuki-neechan!" he exclaimed, using an affectionate term that took her by surprise.
Sasuki blinked, surprised by the familiarity of the term, but she couldn't help but smile slightly as Konohamaru eagerly devoured the apple.
Naruto observed the interaction with a smile.
Hiruzen watched the interaction with a mix of pride and reflection. Seeing Naruto and Konohamaru together brought back some nostalgic memories of his mentors, people they could trust and learn from. Although things weren't always easy, he knew that Naruto and Sasuki were on the right path and that, with time, they could find their own place in the world.
After a while, Hiruzen decided it was time to delve a bit deeper into the conversation.
"Naruto, Sasuki," he said, with a lighter but still serious tone. "I'm curious, how has your first week as an engaged couple been? I know it's not an easy situation, but I'm curious to know how you're adapting."
Naruto and Sasuki exchanged a quick glance before responding almost in unison.
"We're not
a couple!" they both exclaimed, their tones defensive.
Hiruzen chuckled softly, unsurprised by their reaction.
"I understand, I understand," he said with a smile. "Still, I'd like to know how the dynamic between you has been. Have you had any moments where you felt you're starting to understand each other better?"
Naruto and Sasuki, though they verbally denied it, began recalling some moments from the week they had spent together. There hadn't been many, but the ones that existed were significant in some way.
Naruto remembered the small disputes they had, moments when he tried to impress Sasuki only to end up frustrated. However, he also remembered the few times they cooperated without even thinking about it, like when they worked in the garden together, or when Sasuki stepped in to help him handle a situation at the market. Those moments, though fleeting, had shown him a different side of Sasuki, one that was more understanding and capable of working as a team.
Sasuki, for her part, remembered how, despite his carefree and sometimes clumsy attitude, Naruto had always been persistent. Although she found him annoying on many occasions, she had begun to appreciate his ability to never give up, even when things got tough. And although she wasn't ready to admit it, there were moments when Naruto's energy and optimism managed to make her smile, even if inadvertently.
"We're… learning to get along," Sasuki finally said, in a softer tone. "It's not easy, but I think we're finding ways to cooperate."
Naruto nodded, agreeing with Sasuki's words.
"Yeah, that's it," he added. "It's complicated, but we're doing the best we can."
Hiruzen nodded, satisfied with their responses. He knew they still had a long way to go, but he also saw that they were starting to reflect more on their relationship and what it meant to work together.
"That's all I can ask for," he said with a smile. "Remember that there's no rush. Take your time to get to know each other and understand each other. In the end, what really matters is that you find a way to support each other, whether as teammates, friends, or something more."
After the serious conversation with the Hokage, the atmosphere in the room had become more peaceful, as if everyone was absorbing the words Hiruzen had shared. However, time was passing, and Hiruzen knew it was time to return to the village.
Hiruzen calmly stood up, adjusting the hat with the Konoha symbol as he looked at Naruto and Sasuki with a paternal smile.
"It's been a productive visit," he said softly. "But I think it's time we say goodbye for today. Konohamaru, it's time to go."
Konohamaru, who had been sitting next to Naruto, eating the last of the apples Sasuki had given him, frowned when he heard his grandfather's words.
"Already?" he asked in a protesting tone. "But we've just started having fun, Naruto! I don't want to leave yet!"
Naruto laughed at the boy's energy, feeling a brotherly connection he didn't expect to develop so quickly.
"I know, Konohamaru," he said with a smile. "But don't worry, I'm sure there'll be plenty more opportunities for you to come visit us. Besides, this way you'll have time to practice what I taught you today."
Konohamaru pouted, but then his expression brightened as he realized he could come back soon.
"You're right, Naruto!" he exclaimed, jumping up. "I'm going to practice a lot, and next time I'll show you how strong I've become!"
Hiruzen watched the interaction with a warm smile. He was pleased to see that Konohamaru had found someone to admire and connect with, someone who could guide him and teach him not only ninja skills but also important values like perseverance and kindness.
Naruto crouched down to be at Konohamaru's level and patted him on the head.
"I'm sure you will, Konohamaru," he said. "You're a ninja in training, and with effort, you'll be amazing. I'll be waiting for you! For real."
Konohamaru smiled broadly, feeling motivated by Naruto's words.
While Naruto and Konohamaru shared this moment, Hiruzen turned to Sasuki, who had remained silent but attentive during the entire farewell.
"Sasuki," Hiruzen said, his tone more serious but also filled with affection, "I know the burden you carry isn't easy. But I want you to remember that you're not alone. You have allies in this village, and although important decisions have been made by others, how you handle the situation is entirely up to you."
Sasuki nodded, receiving the words with the same seriousness with which they had been spoken.
"I understand, Hokage-sama," she responded in a firm tone. "I'll do my best."
Hiruzen nodded, satisfied with both young people's responses. Although he knew the road ahead would be difficult, he had faith that both Naruto and Sasuki would find the strength to face it and grow from the experience.
When Konohamaru finally accepted that it was time to leave, Naruto accompanied him to the door, followed by Sasuki and Hiruzen. Outside, the cool evening air enveloped them, and the sky was gradually darkening, the first stars beginning to shine.
Konohamaru said goodbye to Naruto with a quick hug, then turned to Sasuki, giving her a wide smile.
"Thanks for the apples, Sasuki-neechan!" he said enthusiastically. "They were really good!"
Sasuki, surprised by the gesture, simply nodded with a slight smile.
"You're welcome, Konohamaru," she replied. "Take good care of your grandfather and keep training."
Hiruzen said goodbye to both with one last look of approval.
"Remember what we talked about today," he said, with a tone that showed both his wisdom and affection. "Don't rush to define your relationship. Give it time to discover what you truly want. The pressure is great, but how you choose to handle it is in your hands. I trust that you'll make the right decisions."
Naruto and Sasuki nodded, understanding the importance of the Hokage's words. They knew it wouldn't be easy, but Hiruzen's words gave them a sense of control over their own destiny, something both needed.
With one final wave, Hiruzen and Konohamaru began walking down the stone path that led to the residence's exit. Naruto and Sasuki watched them in silence as they left, each immersed in their own thoughts.
When the figures of the Hokage and his grandson disappeared among the trees, Naruto sighed, feeling a mix of emotions. The visit had been unexpected, but it had given him a lot to think about.
"The Hokage is right," he finally said, breaking the silence. "We don't have to rush. Maybe… maybe we can take things slow and see how they develop."
Sasuki, who had been looking at the horizon, nodded slowly.
"Yeah, maybe that's for the best," she responded, her voice calm but thoughtful. "I don't know what the future holds, but I know we need time to figure it out."
Naruto looked at Sasuki and felt an unexpected connection at that moment. It wasn't a romantic bond, at least not for now, but there was a mutual understanding, an acceptance that they were in this together, trying to find their way.
"Sasuki," Naruto said with a light smile, "I don't know what's going to happen, but I want you to know that I'll always be here to help you, as a teammate… and as a friend."
Sasuki looked at him, and although her expression remained reserved, there was a flash of softness in her eyes.
"Thank you, Naruto," she responded. "I'll be here too, for whatever you need."
They stood there for a moment, enjoying the tranquility of the evening that surrounded them.
Finally, Sasuki turned and began walking towards the house's door.
"It's late," she said, looking back. "We should go inside."
Naruto nodded and followed her, both entering the house that was now beginning to feel a little more like a home. As the door closed behind them, the echoes of Konohamaru's laughter and the Hokage's wise words continued to resonate in their minds.
Though they still denied having any kind of sentimental bond, they couldn't deny that they felt a little closer after the visit. It had been a day of reflection and connection, and Konohamaru's presence had left a warmth that would persist in the Senju residence.
And as night fell over Konoha, Naruto and Sasuki retreated to their room, knowing that, although things were complicated, they were a little more prepared to face them together.
