Chapter five December, 1599
Gossip corner
To say that the year is coming to an end with a dynamic development of the events would be a great missaying that would definitely take away the justice of the latest happening in our local community. New relationships, new appearances, new scandals - and all, surprisingly, circulating around only one individual, one that kept away so far from catching my attention.
With no doubt, everyone were just as surprised by the announcement of the newest betrothed couple as I was - in all honesty, I have never seen this coming, not in the slightest, And while it makes sense - due to the political reasons, mostly, though I don't doubt an ounce of intimacy must have been there as well - I have completely missed any signs of Miss Alexandra Carlevaro and Lord Giotto Vongola preparing to enter the sacred union of marriage. It would be ignorant to be surprised by the mild acquaintance between them - not that it is strictly necessary to marry, of course, but certainly can come in handy. For the ones who don't know, the short explanation will follow: Carlevaro House has been friends with Vongola House for some time now, which gives more than enough opportunity for the two young people to get to know each other, sometimes even more than it would be expected out of them, as we all know that undesired by all mothers level of physical intimacy can resolve once there is an attraction developed.
I do not doubt Miss Carlevaro made a pile of new enemies amongst other young ladies, catching the attention and favor of the most eligible bachelor in the area. As the rumour goes, no woman - either old or young - had been able to pass Lord Vongola impassively. And I have to agree with that wholeheartedly. Not often such a handsome and approachable man enters the market of the nobility with no prior attachment. And despite his origins, he managed to collect quite a sizable circle of the followers who would love nothing more than to take over Miss Carlevaro's current position by his side. While there are still not many details known about it, the fact that he does come from lower class still surprises many, considering his perfect demeanor and knowledge of etiquette, as well as the pleasant and kind way of communication. Marrying into the Founding Family - not to mention one of the most prestigious, closely tied to the Court and Capitol contacts - can be something the Vongola House desperately need to make their great break through the ranks. Aside from their own abilities in the area of socialisation and politics, Miss Carlevaro backgrounds mixed amongst them would surely benefit the raising family well.
Especially with Miss Elena Baudelaire also on board. Having the daughters of both Duke and Founding Family is something not many can brag about. Even if none of them is actually yet married into the Vongola. I still eagerly await the news when Miss Baudelaire finally decides to become Lady Spade for all of us to witness and celebrate after such a long prologment of it happening.
However, returning to our original subject - what also needs to be admired is the impeccable taste of the young Miss Carlevaro for men. Aside from engaging one of the most handsome bachelors, she also is rumoured to have her eyes on another top marriage choice in the area. Of course, I am talking about Lord Samuel Lacertosa who, shockingly, returned to the town in the perfect time for the betrothal announcement! A little birdie reported to me that the two were spotted talking quite fervently and intimately during the Cavallone Banquette, secluded in the private area of the balcony where no one could easily bother them, despite the presence of Miss Carlevaro's fiance just behind the glass doors.
So daring!
Of course, we all hope that Lord Lacertosa was able to get over the death of his prematurely departed wife, especially with such tragedy and chaos surrounding her demise.
For those who are not accustomed with the situation (though I doubt there are many) let's, once again, present some background information. Young Lady Valentina Lacertosa was found dead in one of the guest rooms of her residence, the culprit remaining unknown and uncatchable for this day. What gives the situation the most spice is the fact that Miss Carlevaro was also present in the same room! Apparently, she was a student of Lady Lacertosa even before she became the Lady, and the sleepover took place before the tragedy for unspecified reasons. With the accusation being thrown on the wind, the names of Miss Carlevaro and Lord Lacertosa has been on the lips of almost everyone around, and the hidden enamourment of - back then - a young girl emerged into the light of the day, making the situation even more worthy of gossip.
One can't help but wander… The presence in the Lacertosa residence of anyone from Carlevaro House still comes as an unbelievable occurrence. It's not a secret that both families have never seen eye to eye with each other. The lack of friendliness seemed to be passed on in genes, as every generation seemed to be at odds with each other. So what was Miss Alexandra doing there in the first place, staying for the night in the unwelcoming residence? How did she come out unscathed, while her teacher lost her life in the most cruel way possible? I think we will never know that, unless she herself decides to finally speak out the truth about the night. But it is said that love can be a source of many unprecedented behaviors.
Considering the past and the presence - is it perhaps possible that the return of Lord Lacertosa will create a scar in the newly developed relationship? Will the new flame survive the reappearance of the old one?
One is certain - there are a lot of things to look forward to in the future.
Zealously squashing the offending piece of paper and tossing it into the fireplace she sat next to, Alexandra huffed with irritation.
Whoever the author of the gossip column was, she or he was becoming a great pain for many members of the nobility. And a source of joy for others - at least the ones that had avoided being discussed by the mysterious writer so far. The Corner had been printed in the local newspapers for the period of last year, their contents more often offending than not, and it was yet to be decided just how much impact the spread of gossip had on the community. For now, while joyously and eagerly repeated, the shared news had been taken with a grain of salt. They were evoking a lot of curiosity, but no evidence had been really provided to support the claims made by the author. Which, in the end, made it nothing more but the pleasant way of embellishing the tea parties and social meetings.
Though it didn't make the fact of seeing one's own name in it less maddening and irritating, the feeling increased in Alexandra's chest with every word she read. Especially when it brought back memories that Alexandra had tried so hard to bury, once again, after her talk with Giotto and Claire. It was expected for the subject to be brought back into the daylight after Samuel had returned to the town and she had been preparing herself for it mentally for the last few days, making sure Lizzie had her ears out for anything that could be modified in the history to make it more interesting for the ones who weren't accustomed with it. While she would prefer to do it on her own, her current actions were limited - it would require a lot of going out and joining social events, something she didn't want to pressure Vongola Guardians into accompanying her to.
She was starting to regret agreeing to testify against Samuel, the event from six years prior heavily weighing on her mind when she thought back to the humiliation and anxiety she had been experiencing during it. And even after it, as the subject had been continuously brought back to life for a few months after it, and her only consolation was the Cavallone Residence and Mia's company in the Capitol. Francesco had convinced her to put aside fear back then, ensuring that the collected evidence had been more than enough to support the claims - he had never been so wrong before and she had no reasons to doubt her father, a person she trusted the most. But the repercussions she had faced, despite it being silenced by the Carlevaro family, had left its mark on her.
And now a new worry had been added to her existing anxiety, and Alexandra wondered how she should be handling it.
She had been anxious, quite a lot, what the return of Samuel could exactly mean for her, despite her words to Claire. He had been intimidating during the meeting at the Cavallone's residence balcony, but he hadn't done her any harm. Whether it was because of Elena's ingerence or he hadn't planned anything in the first place, Alexandra had no idea. Though she strongly doubted Samuel would be mad enough to physically harm her in the house of her ally and friend, surrounded by many witnesses. But it only made her more anxious about the entire situation. There were enough uncertainties in her life at the moment, and adding a new one onto the list was a horrifying development.
"Are you all right, Miss?"
Jolting in surprise at the sudden voice that cut the silence of her temporary room, Alexandra looked at Lizzie, the maid putting a tray with tea in front of her, warm grey eyes watching the brunette with worry.
"Yes, I'm fine, sorry. I was just lost in thoughts." she answered, shaking her head and straightening in her chair.
She hadn't even noticed when Lizzie had entered the room, the maid's steps quiet and careful, as always.
"Was it about the Corner, Miss?" the question was asked with hesitation, her eyes falling on the burning paper.
Alexandra almost groaned in exasperation, feeling the anger at the Author arising once again. Most people had probably seen the print already, having it delivered for breakfast, reading it as an enjoyment and the source of information from the word, eventually settling for the gossip. She was curious just how many had been discussing the matters over the food and teas, remembering the events of the past and guessing what is yet to come. Discussing who really was to blame for the situation and where the killer was now, while wondering whether the previous stories about the passionate love were actually true or not.
"You read it."
"Yes, the cook had paper in the kitchen. We all did. Well, the cook read it aloud, as not many can read, actually" Lizzie confirmed with a small blush on her face, before a determined look took over her features. "But I don't believe in it and others seemed more angered by it than anything else, also not trusting the words. I also didn't believe in it when the trial took place. Miss is not like that."
"You didn't know me back then." Alexandra pointed out with a doubtful smile.
"Maybe. But my ma went to the trials, just like many others from our district. She was always saying that Miss never looked like someone plotting such a complicated lie. Miss was too honest with her emotions, she said. And she felt sorry that you went through that." Lizzie explained with no hesitation. "And my ma is rarely wrong."
The brunette smiled, the honesty and genuine loyalty heard in the maid's voice making her worries diminish lightly, a part of the burden taken from her shoulders. With so many people not believing her, it was nice to hear the words of support from an uninvolved party.
"Thank you, Lizzie." she said, the gratefulness for Lizzie's presence taking over her mind.
Alexandra was suddenly very happy she didn't have to deal with everything on her own. When Francesco had presented her with the plan, she had been terrified of going to the unknown place, even if she knew the owners and inhabitants of it.
"I have always wondered, Miss, who that author is. Everyone is, actually." the maid continued, pouring a cup, her movement almost automatic. "From what class are they and why do they write such things? There is a lot of unpleasant news spread, and it doesn't seem like they care about the consequences of it."
"From nobility, perhaps. Considering the detailed information they had on some people. Unless they have someone to provide her with the gossip, of course." Alexandra added as an afterthought, taking a sip of the warm tea. "It could be anyone. A maid, a bored lady, a debutante wanting to blacken her competition."
Catching Lizzie's doubtful look, the brunette raised her brows questioningly.
"They could really do that?"
Alexandra considered the question for a moment. While barely eighteen during the social debut, the young ladies were all cunning and clever, the shared goal of finding the best husband hindering any chances of making a lasting friendship. Many were prepared by their mothers in the advance, the tricks and tips passed from the more experienced and knowledgeable matrons about the subtle seductions and ways to gain the interest of opposite sex giving them a vast arming for the upcoming banquettes.
She shivered, remembering the battlefield her own social debut was.
"Lizzie, the first thing most debutante-to-be learns is very often the art of subtle seduction and ploy. There are many who will not stop from anything to reach their goal." she said absently, before adding as an afterthought. "Or maybe it is not really so subtle. It is a lot easier and safer to just stay back on the sideline."
Which she had done and never regretted, though Beatrice had been strongly desolated by the lack of engagement for her younger daughter when the season ended. Not that Alexandra shared the same sentiment, as she was not interested in marrying any of the available gentlemen and becoming solely dependent on them, her life and decisions put in the possible spouse's hands.
"I heard the stories of other maids. I'm glad Miss was so calm during the debut." Lizzie said thoughtfully. "My friend, Marie, always said her Miss threw a tantrum whenever she returned from a banquet and was not happy with it. It even included throwing glass objects and books around. Not caring whether it hit someone."
"That does seem extreme." Alexandra held back a grimace.
She wondered who the Miss could be. There were a few names she could think of that fit the situation, but didn't want to jump into a blind conclusion.
A silence filled the room when Lizzie busied herself around the room, tidying whatever she found that could be cleaned. She could barely sit in one spot too long, always searching for a task that could occupy her time of work, the idliness not a part of her character. .
When a thought occurred to her, Alexandra twisted in her chair, watching the young woman.
"Are you going for a Christmas Fair, Lizzie?" she asked, her voice drawing Lizzie's attention.
The fair was thrown every year in all towns around. The tradition was popular amongst both nobles and lower classes, as the decorations put on the display and offered by merchants were amazing to watch, even if someone couldn't afford it. There were still two weeks for the event to take place and Alexandra was quite curious about it. Every year she visited the Fair in her town with her family. It would be the first time she was going to attend another one and that made her interest increase.
"I don't think I should leave Miss alone in the residence. Lord Carlevaro advised not to do so." the maid said with hesitation, though her face betrayed just how saddened she was by it.
"That's fine. I'm going as well, Elena will be with me. So there is no need for you to hold back. I'm sure you would like to spend some time with the man you have been talking about recently,"
She had held her smile back at the sight of the blush taking over Lizzie's face. While the girl had been switching her source of interest every few months, there was something in the way she smiled when talking about the current man that made Alexandra wonder whether it wasn't something more permanent this time.
She honestly hoped Lizzie would find her love, as it was clear the maid desired it much, often daydreaming about the possible romance, sharing more of her imagination that Alexandra sometimes desired. Considering her devotion and the time and effort Lizzie had spent to care for her sick mother, she deserved her happiness and Alexandra wanted nothing else for her.
"Do I really need to?"
Looking at the big mahogany door, Alexandra tried to hold back her grimace. She had visited Allegri's residence a handful of times, participating in tea parties when her mother dragged her into it with Elsbeth - there were times she enjoyed it, of course, but with the current Narrations, there was nothing more she preferred to do than avoid any gatherings.
This time, it was Giotto who insisted on her presence, as the invitation he had received included Alexandra as well, mentioning the tea party Filipa had already told her about. She had a feeling he had been so adamant on her attending it in hopes Giovanni wouldn't pick up the subject of his marriage with Joanne - though she didn't see how it would happen, as they would be sitting in different rooms anyway.
"You don't, but it wouldn't be very polite." Giotto replied swiftly, smiling at her open reluctance.
"I can list a lot of times Filipa wasn't polite to me. It would be beneficial to keep the account balanced."
The list could be quite long, Alexandra was certain, as there were already a lot of occurrences that kept popping into her mind and it wasn't even half of it.
"What benefits can come out of it?" the curiosity was audible.
"My own peace of mind and heart."
Despite the hushed words, Alexandra plastered a smile on her face when the door opened, ignoring Giotto's short laughter as the Allegri's butler took in their appearances before letting them in, his expression as strict and cold as ever.
"Lord Vongola, Master is waiting for you in his office. Miss Carlevaro, please follow me to the garden house."
Before going after the man, Alexandra caught Giotto's conflicted eyes. The blond was hesitant to leave her alone, the danger still hanging over her head, but there was no possibility he could abandon his meeting and follow her, even though they both had known the situation would take such a direction. His presence would most probably be welcomed at the tea party, - depending on the list of attending ladies -but it would be hard to explain. What's more, there was no reasonable explanation to let the accompanying G go with her.
Throwing him a reassuring smile, Alexandra turned to watch the butler's back as he led her through the house. She doubted anything could happen when she was surrounded by Allegri's men. The residence was guarded heavily, as the Lord of the House had been a bit paranoid about the safety of his daughters. She did understand the worry of not fulfilling the promise Giotto had made to her father, as it would be his honour that would take a blow if something happened to her, but all the attempts there were so far had happened when she had been alone or lowly guarded. The last thing Alexandra wanted was for her presence to influence Vongola's business and future, and Lord Allegri wasn't known for appointing needless meetings. Whatever it was, she was certain it was quite important for both families.
She had Lizzie with her, and thought the maid would be of not help in the situation of risk, it was still encouraging to have a friendly face around
Despite her dislike of Filippa, she had always been impressed by the garden house the woman had ordered to build in the yard - sheltered by mostly glass and wood and elegantly furnished, it had served as a favorite meeting place during winter and colder days, as the plants inside gave them all the the impression that they were enjoying the picnic on the outside, almost feeling the gusts of the warm wind on their faces. She wasn't certain how exactly they managed to keep the place warm despite the freezing temperature but Alexandra was far from complaining about it
"Alexandra, you are finally here. I started to think you won't be able to join us in the end."
There were more people than she had expected, she realised as teal eyes took in the gathered women around the table upon entering the building lead the butler. It seemed more ladies were invited than she had originally expected. Which made her realise she hadn't been probably included originally in the planning - the invitation had come quite lately, despite Filipa's mention of it during Cavallone's banquette. Considering the size of the party, it must have been organized at least a few weeks back to accommodate everyone's calendars, Including her own sister, as Alexandra noticed when she caught Elsbeth's familiar eyes, trying to hold back her resigned sigh. Her presence was probably expected due to the rumours that were spreading around about her and Samuel, as she doubted anyone of Allegri's blood would miss such an opportunity.
"Sorry, I hope I'm not too late. There were some issues on the road." taking the chair pulled for her by the butler, Alexandra smiled politely at the host.
Joanne looked as elegant and nice as ever. Thankfully, she had been graced with her father's height and the beauty of his side of the family, and it was common knowledge that there weren't many to compete with Allegri House when it came to looks. All fair and with naturally acquired distinction, they were one of the most searched for wives.
Until the debut of Elsbeth, when it had been the Carlevaro daughter that stole the spotlight from Katherine. To the delight of Beatrice, and fury of Filippa, of course, as the competition between them doubled,. Alexandra couldn't recall who exactly were at the same age as her sister at the moment, but it had been quite a season back then.
"That is quite fine, we have barely started."
"We were just discussing the latest gossip corner."
Alexandra looked at Claudia Sorello with exasperation, trying to conceal the irritated smile that threatened to make its way on her face.
The younger girl watched her reaction with excitement. She had barely started her social debut this year, though many had already discussed her mean and somehow cruel behavior towards the other ladies she had seen as a competition. During the few weeks of social interaction, the girl had managed to not only offend all of her fellow starting debutants, but also the unmarried older ladies, no matter whether they were of higher social status or not.
There was no denying she was bold as well. Alexandra hadn't expected her to pick the subject up after she barely had a chance to sit by the table. Lord Sorello had tried to ensure his daughter hadn't made any improper comments to either of the Founding Families so far, though he could not follow his child around to watch over her behavior constantly, especially not during the events only female members of nobility were invited to.
And Claudia never refused the invitation.
"Were you? I don't think there was anything worth mentioning." she said with a polite nonchalance.
Alexandra wondered whether the girl would go all the way or satisfy herself with veiled comments, an actual curiosity about the girl's boldness taking over her mind. The mention of the print seemed to make some of the guests uncomfortable, as they decided to abandon the conversation, instead opting for creating small groups, each taking on their own subjects, throwing an occasional glance towards them.
"I personally found it rather dull." Elsbeth interjected, taking her sister by surprise. "It was nothing more than the empty conjectures and repetition of old tales."
"It was quite intriguing that the entire print was dedicated to only one gossip." The smile on Claudia's face was a clear indication she had no intention of dropping the subject.
"There were three actually. One was my engagement, the other Samuel Lacortosa's return and the third the events that happened six years ago." Alexandra corrected, nodding her head with gratitude when a maid put a cup of tea in front of her, before stressing out. "Tragic events, which shouldn't be mentioned lightly."
"They still circulated around one person."
So the girl was going to stick to the most undesired subject, after all, the brunette realised with a slight anger.
"But it still considered three individual events that took place in different times, places and circumstances. And three people as well. I start to wonder whether you actually read the paper or not, Claudia." Alexandra watched as the girl narrowed her eyes slightly.
"Of course I did. I wouldn't talk about it otherwise." she answered with a dignified huff.
"Perhaps you should read it with more comprehension, then." Alexandra suggested.. "It would benefit your future relations."
She couldn't back up, not with so many witnesses hearing the conversation. If she shied away from defending herself, and hoping to stop the conversation before it actually touched any specific details of the gossip, they could all perceive it as an admission of the truth.
"I do have enough good connections to be able to speak my mind freely." the pride that radiated from Claudia almost made the brunette laugh.
Most probably, it was her father's connections that barely included the matter of his daughters. While Sorello were not a part of the mafia, they still were one of the Royal Traders, which gave them the opportunity to participate in Court events occasionally, something they all liked to boast about. Yet, if the girl made a wrong comment to the wrong person, it could not only ruin her own chances, but also badly influence the family's business and Claudia didn't seem to fully realise that yet.
"I'm glad to hear that. I hope you will be able to maintain them."
It was a genuine concern. Alexandra could not like or enjoy spending time with the girl, but she wouldn't want her to corrupt her standing amongst other ladies by her behavior.
"I don't have any doubt I will. I was quite successful during the season and my father is receiving a lot of letters. It is only a matter of time I will take over a very respectable position." tossing her hair over her shoulder, Claudia looked around the table very pleased with herself.
"Do you have anyone specific in mind?"
The wicked smile blossomed on Claudia's face when she heard Katherine Allegri's curious question. A pleased glint in her eyes was a clear indication she greatly enjoyed being the centre of attention and Alexandra gladly gave the position away.
"I am planning to wait and see whose offer is going to be the best. Then I can decide with whom I will have the best future."
Biting her tongue, Alexandra kept her comment to herself. Marrying into a rich family would secure Claudia's comfort and luxury, but it didn't necessarily foreshadow a good future for her, especially not with the attitude of hers. A rumours about cruel and hurtful behavior of many husbands towards their spouses circulated around the society for years, scaring the young maidens and serving as a warning for those who dared to behave outside the standards that would be accepted by those providing their cares.
Apparently, only a good and obedient wife would receive a pleasant affection.
"I presume you didn't have as many choices, Alexandra, seeing as you are still not married." Claudia said suddenly, bringing the brunette out of her thoughts.
She didn't know if she had ever done anything to Sorello's daughter, but it certainly seemed like the girl held some detestation towards her.
"I don't think I was a star of it, but considering the amount of proposals, I consider it successful." she answered truthfully, picking her cup to cover the irritation.
Considering that the whispers of Lacertosa's trial hadn't died yet fully, though it was quieten due to her father's actions, she had actually been a bit surprised about the amount of letter arriving at her Francesco's desk. Thankfully, he had rejected all of them.
"Seeing the position Carlevaro family holds, as well as Alexandra herself, she was popular. Even when she didn't make much attempt to be." the words of Katherine surprised her.
"I think it was Joanne who was the most popular thought." she pointed towards the host with her head, hoping the attention would be diverted.
It seemed to please the other woman, as she smiled with pride. But the spark of irritation was still there when she looked at Claudia. Joanne and Alexandra were of the same age, so the previous comment must have touched a certain nerve to her as well.
And no one liked to deal with an angry Allegri.
"The first season is always the most memorable one. I had a lot of fun back then." Joanne said with a superior air. "But I did with the others as well. I am actually very glad that neither father nor mother rushed with the decision to marry me off."
"When exactly did you two start it? Five years ago?"
Alexandra was certain Claudia was well aware how old they were. She didn't even try to conceal the smile that showed in the corner of her lips, as she glanced at Joanne, wondering how long Claudia was going to survive the event for.
The younger girl had obviously set her goal on showing her mean side that day.
"Almost three, actually." she answered, before Joanne could bring the girl to the ground.
"Not getting married yet must be troublesome." the fake compassion played on the brunette's nerves. "Especially with the current Corner."
"I'm twenty one, Claudia. Getting married before that age is not something that happens daily, you should be aware about it by now." Alexandra pointed out, looking her straight in the eyes. "And I do greatly enjoy the time I have as a free woman, thank you for your concern."
"The corner's author has been quite troublesome lately. Hasn't she been picking up old scandals for a few weeks?"
Elsbeth's words brought a wave of shifting around the table as Claudia's face went red She had barely scanned through the Corner back then, but the Author had brought back the illegitimate child of older Sorello's daughter, printing the gossip just in time for her return. It had been the one before her own, if she remembered correctly.
"There was not much going on recently that could be more interesting than it. So there was nothing else to write about for her." Joanne agreed, nodding her head.
"I certainly hope that there would be nothing to talk about. No scandals means no story. The interest in her will die out eventually, giving all of us a breath of relief." Alexandra voiced her thoughts.
From the corner of her eye she could see the grimace on Sorello's daughter's face. It seemed like Claudia had a hope that others would join in ridiculing Alexandra about the news, something she had failed at as the brunette showed no real indication that the rumours hurt her. Thankfully, it seemed the opposite.
Probably, she thought to herself, it was caused by the fact that all three out of four daughters of the Founding Families took the common front. This was enough to take a step back for the ladies from mafia houses. For the ones that weren't, the titles of Earl borne by Carlevaro and Allegri were enough to not join the feud. It wasn't clear whether it had been Joanne's intention, but the others gathered were from Baron families.
Alexandra might detest using her father's title, but, sometimes, the benefits of it came in handy. She wouldn't go crying into her father's shoulders about being called out about the Corner mostly due to her own pride, even if the conversation was continued relentlessly or joined by others. Francesco had more pressing matters on his head than petty arguments of the debuting ladies.
But Claudia didn't know that. And she wasn't going to make her aware of that, hoping the girl had enough sense to drop the subject.
"But there is already one scandal, isn't it? About Lord Valonte's daughter?"
All heads turned towards Katherine when she spoke, her gentle grey eyes watching others with confusion when she received surprised looks.
It was never mentioned aloud, but the oldest daughter of the Allegri House had been considered as a failure even by her own mother - she had been openly rejecting any possible suitors, stopping their advances even before they fully developed, deciding to remain a maiden at the age of twenty six.
"Violet or Maria?" Alexandra inquired curiously.
She hadn't heard any news about the Valontes lately, but it wasn't anything concerning - the House had strayed from the gossip and scandals, keeping mostly to themselves. And she had limited her own outings, so the amount of hushed whispers reaching her ears was a lot smaller than it had previously.
"Violet. It probably hasn't reached the author yet." Elsbeth answered and, catching her sister's eyes, she let out a long sigh. "Honestly, are you locked up in that house? Everyone had heard about it."
"Busy with bridal lessons. What happened to Violet?" she added her question immediately, to not encourage any possible comments.
"The rumour says she ran away from home. With a lover." Joanne was the one to answer, supporting her elbows on the table.
"Violet has a lover." there was a great dose of disbelief in Alexandra's voice when she watched their host.
"You don't believe it?"
Turning towards Claudia, the brunette shook her head in answer, before saying aloud.
"Not really. I mean, Violet is so reserved and proper it is hard to believe she would go against the norms like that."
"Well, they do say still waters run deep, so maybe it is not that hard to imagine." shrugging her shoulders, Joanne tilted her head curiously before continuing. "I always found her lack of interest in the available bachelors suspicious."
"Maybe she hasn't found any of them to her liking."
Alexandra's suggestion wasn't well received by other ladies. She felt a few glares directed at her, though ignored them, taking her time to choose a pie to put on her plate instead.
She had shared the notion of Katherine, and probably Violet. While there were many bachelors to choose from in order to have a good and comfortable life, securing the respect of the local society, Alexandra had found herself rather uninterested in having only the goal of being a mother and good wife in her life.
But, at the same time, a realisation had been taking over her mind as she grew older and spent more time in the Capitol watching the society, that it was probably the future that awaited her anyway, despite her continous refusal of it. She could be only twenty one, but she wasn't naive enough to reject the truth. The position of women was limited, as well as their possibilities and chances. The best option would be to find a husband that wasn't going to limit her own freedom and crush her character. And if he brought a position of the Lady of the House with the marriage, it was the best possible outcome.
The position of her father gave her certain freedom that ladies from lower families didn't have - she had no need for marrying into the high House in order to maintain the reputation and comfort. At the same time, more was expected out of her than out of others, and it wouldn't be long before not only her mother, but also the society, would press on her to meet the expectation and become the proper lady. Especially once she would no longer be engaged to Giotto.
She really admired the strength of Katherine in surviving it.
"Not all of us can be as lucky as you, Alex." Joanne's voice held a veiled note of jealousy. "Despite the Author's other nonsense, you did, in fact, take the most eligible bachelor away."
"I have good taste, as she wrote." she replied swiftly.
It wasn't really a lie - she might not be engaged to Giotto with the intention of actually marrying, but she was not going to deceive herself and others in denying his title of the most handsome available lord was well deserved..
"But is he really the most eligible? He does have looks, but he is still of not noble blood." the detest in Claudia's voice was noticeable.
Alexandra felt a spike of irritation as she looked at the younger girl. Even if she knew that Clauda shouldn't be taken seriously and the best way to deal with her was ignorance, the open call out to Giotto's origin made her angry. He might have grown in the low class, but gained his respect thanks to hard work, not through inheritance.
"And yet, he is a Baron. Which makes him of the same status as half of the people gathered here." she pointed out, taking a bite of her pie.
"How did he earn his title, anyway? I heard the fastest way was to buy it." Claudia continued the subject, the honest curiosity shining in her eyes, despite the angry scowl that took over her features.
So she was more interested in the Vongola family than she was showing, Alexandra realised, leaning against the back of her chair and watching the girl with more attention. There had to be a reason other than getting on her nerves, as the two of them had barely exchanged any words before.
With the teal eyes turning sharper, Claudia shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
"I heard he earned it through the work he had done for the officials and Royal Family." Katherine supplied,
Alexandra herself wasn't certain what exactly Giotto and his Guardians had done to earn their current status, though she had no doubt in Katherine's words. Her father had shared that it was due to a specific action that they had taken to help them, but the details of it was something that he hadn't been keen on giving out.
And in the end, she realised, it wasn't her business to dwell into.
"It seems like the noble titles are losing their meaning. If the King is giving them out like that, perhaps he should have raised the ranks of the real nobles." Claudia sighed heavily.
Whether it were her real words, or something she was blindly repeating after hearing out, Alexandra wasn't certain. But she would bet on the second, as she doubted Claudia would concern herself with rankings of the raising families on a daily basis - it was clear the younger girl was only interested in the higher positions.
"You can have your rank raised by earning it." Elsbeth pointed out, her tone still as calm as ever.
"Let's remember that all noble Houses once started from a low position." Joanne added, obviously not happy with the route the conversation took.
"Going back to Violet, is it known who she ran away with?" Alexandra changed the subject, throwing away any sense of subtlety, not really looking forward to continuous dispute with Claudia.
While it was not an uncommon occurrence for the young couples to elope against their parents wishes, it was the first time it happened to be someone Alexandra personally knew and quite liked. She would never guess Violet would do something like this, somehow her calm and calculated decisions and demeanor didn't fit into such decisions at all.
"No, no one knows. Her parents are trying to investigate it, but there were no signs of her falling in love." Katherine shook her head, raising a cup of tea to drink from it.
"If for some reason they didn't want anyone to know it, it would be their aim to hide it from everyone." Elsbeth said with a shrug of her shoulder. "Pretending lack of knowledge can be the best solution in certain matters."
Alexandra considered it for a moment, muting the conversation out. It would be best for Violet to be found and returned home, from the propriety and reputation perspective. But if she had found her love which her father didn't approve of, the chances of her returning willingly were very low. If she would be able to sustain the hardship that would come with the change of pace and her life, there was no doubt Violet would be happy. And it took a lot of bravery to go against the social standards of their society.
If her newly found love was, in fact, a real one.
"I'm not sure if you have heard about another one as well." the sudden interjection of Victoria Zanetti made Alexandra jump, as she almost forgot about the presence of others. "The rumour, I mean."
"And what is it?"
Elsbeth was obviously tired of the conversation as well, if Alexandra was judging well by the bored tone of her voice. Her sister, while much more reserved in showing her distaste, was also not a zealous supporter of gossiping.
"Apparently, Lord Passero has taken another lover." Victoria said in excited whispers.
Passero's love for infidelity was well known amongst the local society. As well as the amount of bastards he had around, amongst both low class and high class. Many of his interests were the maids living in the residence, who had no claims against giving themselves away in hopes of higher pays and better lives - it was also rumoured he had concubines in house, switching them whenever he had felt bored, though no one was able to confirm it.
But it was impressive he hadn't gone bankrupt by supporting the local orphanage anonymously for every child of his that was there.
"I don't think it is really a surprise for anyone." Alexandra pointed out.
"Normally, it wouldn't, but they say he took someone from the Lacertosa family. Some say it is Lady Lacertosa, considering the gap between her and her husband."
"He is that brave? Lacertosa Senior would never take such shame lightly."
The man would probably be dead by now, as the Head of the Lacertosa House did not hold himself back when someone ridiculed him.
"I don't know, but it is what they say around the town." Victoria shrugged her shoulders. "Someone saw Lady Lacertosa leaving the house of Passero numerous times."
"She could be visiting Lady Passero, you know." Elsbeth reasoned with exasperation. "Her husband and Passero are nearly the same age."
"Maybe. Or maybe not. But you have two scandals circulating around. I hope it will be pointed out in the Corner at one point or another." Claudia interjected. "How many years is between the Lord and Lacertosa?"
"Around thirty, I think." Victoria answered thoughtfully. "I'm not sure, but she was devastated by the marriage."
"Why? She has a very high and respectable position now."
"Would you really be comfortable with marrying a man old enough to be your father?" Elsbeth asked with disbelief.
"Why not? If it came with much respect, it wouldn't be bad. Also, the old men usually already have an heir, so there would be no pressure on me to give him one."
Claudia was scaring her, Alexandandra admitted to herself with no claims. The girl's desire for marriage was taking a sick turn, and she was barely eighteen. If, for some reason, she wouldn't get married after her first season - as her goal seemed to be - there was no saying just how desperate she would turn in the next one.
And, she realised with a shiver, she herself would be free of engagement as well by that time, which would make her a competition for the girl. Alexandra felt a headache forming barely at the thought of it, considering the future while the conversation around the table continued.
When an hour later a familiar figure entered the meeting place, she wasn't able to conceal the relieved look on her face. It must have been far more visible than she thought, if the amused smile in the corner of Giotto's lips upon noticing it was any indication.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I'm afraid we need to go." Giotto said apologetically after greeting other ladies in the room.
"Maybe you could join us for a cup of tea, Lord Vongola?" Joanne said with a charming smile, the tone of her voice becoming much softer.
Alexandra exchanged surprised looks with her sister.
It was the first time they both witnessed such behavior of Joanne, despite knowing her for so many years - she had been reserved and she had been polite, but she had never been openly infatuated. Despite the fact that she should have felt offended by the open attempt at flirting, Alexandra looked at the blond standing behind her, teal eyes laughing openly at him, ignoring the reproaching glance she received back.
"It is a very good tea." she pointed out helpfully, not able to stop herself.
There was something undeniably appealing in teasing him, especially after he had done it to her during Cavallone's ball.
"I don't doubt it." he answered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Unfortunately, I already have certain plans."
"Is it something of utmost importance? It would be a shame if you didn't taste the desserts, our cook is exceeling when it comes to sweets." Joanne continued, to the growing embarrassment of the man.
Giotto was starting to regret not asking the butler or maid to fetch Alexandra.
"They are worthy of sin." the brunette supplied, taking too much fun from her predicament.
He looked at her with exasperation and was not surprised when she showed no remorse back. She had already proved to be a skilled teaser when pushed to it. Though she had the audacity to cover her smile by drinking the rest of her drink.
"I already promised my dear fiancee to spend time with her, as I have a feeling I was abandoning her lately." he replied swiftly, smiling with apology to Joanne. "She can be a bit mean when she feels she doesn't get enough attention."
He watched with a certain level of satisfaction as the brunette almost choked on her tea when all eyes turned to her. Attention was the last thing she wanted.
"Well, we shouldn't be stopping you then." Elsbeth interjected, having no claims about cutting Joanne's attempt short.
"Thank you."
The farewells went swiftly once Alexandra realised that staying longer could result in him taking the challenge of teasing and he didn't hold her relieved breath any longer once they found themselves in the carriage, her shoulders sagging slightly.
"You look as if you just escaped a death row." G pointed with amusement.
"Something similar." she admitted, resting comfortably against the couch.
Alexandra hoped that she wouldn't be required to join any more tea parties for at least some time. Or any social interactions at all that included Claudia Sorello's presence.
"Have you heard anything about Violet Volonte lately?" she asked suddenly, breaking the silence in the carriage.
"Not really. I don't think I even know her." Giotto replied, an unasked question audible in his voice.
"Isn't Volonte the guy that invested in the gold mines and got rich from it?" G asked in turn, his attention on the brunette.
"He did. But he got his money from trading, originally." she confirmed. "They had the title for a few generations, but got unlucky on the way. Almost got bankrupt before Lord Volonte took a risk of investing."
"It was a good shot." the redhead commented.
"For everyone. We benefited from that as well." Giotto pointed out.
The piece of information took her by surprise. She didn't know much about Vongola's rise and success, but a lot was becoming clear during her short stay in their residence. While many Houses had ridiculed the idea of investing in, what had been believed, to be a dry deposit, the ones that had been brave enough - or had nothing to lose - to do so benefited greatly, their wealth growing enough to be one of the leading in ranks.
The protection business Giotto and his Guardians seemed to be exceeling in was probably profitable, but she had realised that they were far more wealthy than one could think after she had moved with them. To keep the enormous Residence at top state, as well as supporting such a big family consumed a lot of money, after all.
"I didn't know you got into that as well. Volonte and Sorello were most noticeable. I mean, the change in their financial status was loudly discussed around as they boasted about it." she commented before she could stop herself.
For a moment she was afraid it was perceived as overstepping a certain boundary, but Giotto only shrugged lightly, not bothered by the words at all.
"We barely became the Noble House when it happened. It was the first thing I did as a Lord, so there was nothing to compare it with for others." he explained.
"What was that about the Volonte girl?"
She was a bit surprised that it was G who brought the subject back to the original one, but she realised that the redhead was far more careful about the sensitive information of their House than the Lord himself was as the Guardian shot Giotto a warning look.
"I just heard that she ran away from home. I was curious if it reached you as, apparently, it is the talk of town." she replied, suddenly feeling a bit uncertain about bringing it up.
The redhead raised an eyebrow at her doubtfully.
"She probably got herself a lover and didn't want to wait for her parents approval." he repeated what she had heard before.
Alexandra hesitated, trying to decide whether there was a sense in continuing the conversation - while she had her doubts, there was probably nothing more to it than what everyone believed. It wasn't as she knew Violet very well. The few meetings and discussions they had weren't enough to judge her character well, she realised belatedly.
"You are probably right." she said, turning to look through the window on the passing street.
She missed the amber eyes watching her curiously.
The Winter Festival brought a lot of joy and calmness to everyone in the local area, the careless conversations and laughter echoing around the streets despite the late hours of the evening. The celebrations were most enjoyable after it became dark, as the lanterns and light made the city centre look almost magical and that was when most of the adults appeared on the streets, the families with children returning home to put the youngest to sleep, even though many of them had still wandered around.
"If I could, I would probably buy all the decorations here."
Smiling when she barely managed to avoid being tripped by a small boy running around chased by his friend, snowballs in their hands, Alexandra looked in Elena's direction, glancing at the glass decoration the blonde was holding and appraising.
"It would take a small fortune, but the residence would look amazing." she agreed, running her eyes over the display,
"I'm glad you understand me. As Vongola House has barely any decorations inherited, I think it is the best time to start their own collection soon." Elena placed the decoration back, careful not to break it. "I always enjoyed going through the Christmas things left by my ancestors, they were amazing."
Alexandra understood the notion perfectly. Most of the decorations in Carlevaro Residence were handmade, a tradition started by the first Lady of the House and continued by the daughters and sons of the House for many years to follow. A quite enormous collection was gathered by now and she always felt a spike of thrill whenever the staff brought the boxed down from the attic.
"I'm sure Giotto would spare some money if you asked him." the brunette suggested, seeing the point of Elena's words.
"I will need to do so eventually. Probably next year. And I hope you will help me choose it." the blonde said, looking at her with a smile.
It was easy to be Elena's companion, the openness and friendliness of the woman making it hard to not like her and enjoy every minute of the interaction. Recently, she had started dropping hints of wanting to continue their relationship even after Alexandra moved back to her Residence and the brunette had no claims against it.
"It can be arranged, I'm sure." she replied with a smile of her own.
It wasn't hard to convince Giotto to let her go with Elena, as he had nothing against her going out, as long as a Guardian was with her. Which was easy to arrange, as Demon was going to accompany his fiancee anyway. There was no need to bother another member of the Vongola family with participating in the trip after that, especially as the Lord's approval was granted for such an arrangement.
"Unless you prefer to spend time with Miss Claudia Sorello." The amusement was hard to miss and Alexandra refrained herself from rolling her eyes.
"I'm regretting mentioning it." she said with a sigh.
"You wanted to vent and I was there."
"I will learn from my experience."
A loud laughter by her right caught Alexandra's attention and she looked at the group of young girls, definitely before their social introduction, running around and throwing snowballs at each other, ignoring their mothers displeased warnings and signs.
"I always wanted to have a sister close to my age, to have fun like that." Elena said suddenly, blue eyes watching the play as well.
"There is only three years between me and Elsbeth, but we never did it." she replied under her breath.
Their relationship was rather strange, as both sisters had nothing against each other, but at the same time both kept their distance. Perhaps it was the difference of characters, but Alexandra wasn't fully certain.
"You two are completely different. While I could easily imagine you throwing snow around, I can't envision Elsbeth doing so." catching the doubtfully amused look, Elena added hastily. "It was a compliment."
"Well, I have corrupted Lorenzo into that, so your imagination isn't far from the truth." Alexandra caved in eventually.
"And I can't see Cavallone doing that." Demon interjected with a doubtful expression.
"I have a gift of persuasion."
Truth to be told, Lorenzo had only agreed to have a snowball fight with her to stop her nagging, as she had kept bothering him for that for a few days straight, her task easier due to her parents visiting Cavallone Residence for Christmas. Whatever the reason was for that, the memory still brought a joyous feeling in Alexandra - the laughter, scenery of the garden covered in white snow and the amused chuckles of their parents, as well as Lorenzo's still ringing in her ears whenever she fondly thought back to it.
"Should we get some mulled wine? They are selling one over there."
Elena pointed her finger towards the long line of people that awaited their turn to have a chance of tasting the drink. It was also one of the reasons why the Festival was so famous. With the proper ingredients, the wine was a marvelous addition to the winter view, warming up the cold hands and spreading the nice feeling through the entire body, making the event even more pleasant.
"Do you really want to stand in that queue?" Demon inquired, looking doubtful while watching the small gathering in front of the stroll.
"It's not like we have anything better to do anyway."
The moment Demon caved to her request was clearly written all over his face, as he sighed in defeat, turning away from the big blue eyes that were watching him pleadingly. Looking down to hide her smile behind her hair, Alexandra wondered whether the Guardian was ever able to refuse anything his fiancee asked him for.
"You two are coming with me, though. I got a specific order to not let you out of my sight." he said, looking at the brunette sternly.
"I will be good." she promised, nodding her head.
"We can continue looking over the decorations after we have our drinks." Elena proposed, linking her arm with Alexandra, smiling brightly.
As the brunette learned, she wasn't the only one that was excited when Christmas was close - Elena was even more anxious with every passing day than she was. The joyous smile visible as she hummed in contempt whenever her eyes fell on the decorated Christmas tree was contagious. And even Guardians found themselves affected by her mood.
The atmosphere around the Vongola residence when the preparations were going on surprised Alexandra. While she had always liked the season, the rest of the Carlevaro family was rather reserved in their excitement. Usually, she was the only one watching the maid decorating the Christmas Tree and the house, forbidden to do it herself by her mother. Apparently, as the daughter of the Earl it was not proper for her to do so. That is why it had taken her aback, when, one day, she had entered the dining room to witness Elena and a great part of the Guardians around the enormous tree, putting the decorations on themselves. When the blonde extended her hand for her, holding out a glass ball, indicating she was invited to join, Alexandra didn't hesitate, forgetting all together about the food she was supposed to be consuming.
She barely started enjoying the drink in her hand when a feeling of someone staring at her rouse the small hairs on the back of her neck and she wasn't sure whether the shiver that followed was caused by the cold gust of wind or the predicament.
When she turned towards the direction of the person staring she met the pair of strikingly green eyes looking back at her, their owner sitting at the small table on the sideline of the area designated for the Festival, watching her with thoughtful and careful expression, though with no malicious intent. A white hair was pulled up in the messy bun, though the woman looked barely older than she did herself, if Alexandra judged correctly from the distance.
"A gypsy."
Demon's voice brought her out of the sudden enchantment she fell upon upon watching the woman and she looked at him questioningly.
"They are here every year. Around Christmas and spring time." Elena supplied, looking in the same direction curiously. "They don't do any harm, basically offering only their service in hand reading and future telling."
"And robbing unsuspecting fools out of their money." Demon added under his breath.
"That too."
Alexandra turned towards the woman once again, though she had been already occupied by a customer, a young girl who shifted nervously standing in front of the table, her hand grasped tightly by the gypsy.
"I think we should be getting home when we are done with the drinks. The snowfall is growing in strength and the last thing needed is for both of you to fall sick."
Following Demon's eyes and looking up at the sky, Alexandra noticed that the Guardian was in fact correct. It had been snowing all day, the white flakes falling over the ground in slow motion, light enough to take a pleasure in the strolls. The white curtain had been getting thicker, though, with every passing hour.
"You are probably right." she said absently.
"The strolls will be here tomorrow as well, so we can always return." Elena added, sighing a bit in disappointment, smiling nonetheless.
"They should be here for the next few days. We will manage to buy something at a later date."
The line of the people awaiting their drinks seemed to grow before they reached it, standing behind the last person.
"Are you going to spend Christmas with us?" Elena asked suddenly., lowering her voice a bit.
"I don't know. It would be a bit weird to spend it away from my family, but it all depends on the situation."
She hadn't broached the subject so far with Giotto yet. While she would want nothing more than to return to Carlevaro residence for the celebration, Alexandra didn't want to burden him nor any of the Guardians with missing their own event. Elena had mentioned once that the times when the entire Vongola family was able to gather together were very limited, as someone was usually away on business on mission.
Considering that they had already been doing a lot to protect her, she didn't want to take away their precious time together.
"It would be nice if you joined us. Though I do understand the desire to spend it with your mother and sister."
"I was wondering if it would be possible to go by myself." Alexandra admitted, looking over her shoulder to check the distance between them and another person in line.
The man standing in front of them was far enough to not hear the hushed voice.
"I strongly doubt it. Giotto is rather set on making sure Francesco's wishes are fulfilled." Demon interjected, silently as well.
"Even for a few hours?" she inquired, wondering whether her father hadn't been too paranoid.
"Yes. Francesco had been perfectly clear about keeping the constant vigilance over you. As he said it, the attempts took place whenever you were left alone." the set voice of Demon ensured her the Guardian was probably right.
Until the matter of the spy in Carlevaro ranks was resolved, she doubted she would be allowed to go anywhere without the guards, even after her father's return. The events had shaken both her and her mother, especially the night when the intruders had entered the residence without alerting anyone.
"Is the danger still out there?" she inquired.
The time she had spent in Vongola residence was a lot calmer than the last weeks before her father left for his mission.
"It is. Not as much as at the beginning, but it is still there."
Alexandra appreciated his truthfulness. She hadn't really been aware if there had been any other attempts on her safety and she had spent the last weeks in blissful ignorance.
"So it will be best if you don't plan any secret rendezvous with anyone until everything quiets down." the obvious humour in Demon's voice made her glare at him, all the appreciation gone as he raised his voice back to the normal tone. .
"I will make sure to take you with me when I plan it." she answered with indignation.
"Please don't."
Alexandra looked at him with amusement, which only grew when she noticed his exasperated look.
"Please do. He will report everything to me later on." Elena laughed, her eyes sparkling at the possibility. "You know, who, where, what they were doing."
"I would prefer to avoid getting included into that, thank you." throwing a look at the blonde, Demon rolled his eyes seeing the innocent eyes. "Also, her fiance is my boss, he would be the first one to hear such details."
"And here I thought we are becoming friends." Alexandra muttered with an exasperated sigh, though a smile showed easily on her face.
"I will think about your application for the position."
Laughing while shaking her head, Alexandra turned her eyes towards the stroll, the line diminishing slightly. At the moment, there was nothing more she desired but the warm drink, the growing coldness of the air slowly getting to her as she tried to stop her shivers, waiting patiently for their turn. But she didn't hold back her relieved sigh when Demon handed the cups to her and Elena, and smiled when the blonde showed the same reaction.
"If you are cold, why do both of you insist on staying here?" watching them, Demon raised an eyebrow,
"For the atmosphere."
"For the wine."
Both women smiled at themselves when the answers came simultaneously, completely ignoring the exasperated murmur of Demon.
"We should have taken the carriage, though." Elena admitted after a moment, holding the cup with both hands, warming them despite the gloves.
"It seemed like a good idea to walk back then." taking a sip of warm drink, Alexandra closed her eyes, enjoying the effect of it.
"You did mention it would be fun to enjoy the weather. And I did mention you were going to regret it." Demon reminded them, pleased with himself for some reason.
"Because it is still the truth. Even though it's cold, I do like strolling in snow." Elena nudged her fiance, throwing him a look.
"We will need to secure some warm tea and blankets once we are back." the Guardian sighed, putting his arm around the blonde.
"More mulled wine would be appreciated." she answered, snuggling to him for additional warmth.
Alexandra smiled, watching the pair. While they had usually limited their display of affection in the house, it was very clear in their interactions that they were very close to each other, their love radiating whenever they looked at each other. It almost seemed like they communicated without words, and it never seemed to amaze the brunette. She had always considered their parents were a very close and loving couple, but it seemed Elena and Demon we on completely another level of it.
They were coming back to the Vongola residence when the sudden attack occurred. Despite Demon's complaining about their insistence on not taking the carriage to travel to the market, he seemed to have as good a time as Elena and Alexandra Even though it was probably because their mood increased thanks to the mulled wine, but the easy conversation and bickering exchanged between the three of them made the way back much enjoyable. Even the thickly falling snowflakes did nothing to ruin it. .
Looking ahead of them, Alexandra could see the light of the residence through the flakes. It was easy to imagine the warmth of the fireplace in her bedroom as every step they took brought them closer to the building and the shelter it would provide to their cold bodies.
The sudden explosion came out of nowhere, the ground next to the Demon exploding in the rain of soil and snow, the Guardian's balance lost for a second due to the impact and aftershock of it. Elena gasped in shock, jumpring away, her body slamming against Alexandra, the brunette barely able to stop both of them from falling, teal eyes watching the scene, widened in fear and shock.
The sound was still ringing in Alexandra's ears when the group of men made an appearance, following the digression of the explosion. They looked haggard, their shouting barely getting to her, though the guns in their hands were a clear indication they were not going to back away easily. Their interest wasn't directed at either Alexandra and Elena, as they ignored them after a quick glimpse, surrounding Demon. The Guardian's eyes darted between his companions and enemies, assessing the situation, contemplating the most proficient way of acting.
The steps behind her reached Alexandra's ear too late, as her vision was suddenly obscured by a dark and thick material, pulled hastily over her head, scraping her face and pulling on her hair. Strong hands gripped her sides, pulling her away from her companions.
Elena's voice screaming her name came at the same moment the fight erupted, though it was quickly fading away, her captor moving fast away from the group. Her feet couldn't reach the ground, the man holding her up with no intent of putting her. Either afraid she may try to run away, or ensuring they move as fast as possible, he made his way in the unknown direction, his stroll purposeful and non-hesitant.
