Chapter 34: The Sports Festival part. 6-The Race of a Lifetime act.3
Izuku watched on in sadness as he watched Uraraka flair around in the air for him until she disappeared from sight and hopefully closer to the finish line. But his 'Watching the Horizon' was cut short by an Ice Beam that nearly careened with his head! He quickly jumped back in his hiding spot and watched as another slipping student was frozen in place from the waist down! Izuku raked through his brain for a good enough plan to get through this, but no matter what he thought of, it was always debunked by this and that fact or possibility.
Eventually, he started to curl in on himself and grabbed at his hair frustration trying to even think of something that didn't need him to use his quirk, but still, nothing came to mind. Then a memory ran through his mind from the opening of the festival with All Might.
'IN LIFE, A HERO MUST OVERCOME ALL OBSTACLES SET BEFORE THEM. INCLUDING NATURE! AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO TEST YOUR METAL, THAN WITH LIVING NATURE ITSELF!', he heard All Mights voice ring through his head.
And that's when it hit him….the answer to his dilemma. His answer to every obstacle in this race! And he knew exactly what it was and how to do it! He shouldn't be trying to fight against or run from the pokemon, he should be using them! Heroes can't stop nature in any way, but they sure can turn it around in their favor if they're smart. The only thing was how? He was sure none of the pokemon blasting them with ice from the sidelines were going to help. So he had to think of something else.
So he peeked out from his hiding spot and surveyed the area. Nothing but Ice-types grouped up into threes along with 10m-30m distances and each one-shot some form of ice attack to freeze anyone who came into their line of sight. Then he saw the three pokemon sliding around on the ice, outmaneuvering everyone trying to run, and knocking people over like bowling pins! Izuku recognized the pokemon as Emploeon, Dewgong, and Walrein. He noted that Emploeon was the closest one and formed a plan fast!
He jumped from behind his hiding spot, stood on the tips of his toes, sucked in his gut, puffed out his chest, and held his head high and proud! Izuku knew Emploeon would see this and take it as a challenge. And just as he thought, the pokemon immediately noticed him and the stance he was taking. So the pokemon slid straight up to the teen, stood up on its webbed feet, stood only a few inches from him, and loomed over the teen to reciprocate the challenge!
Empoleon was a large, navy blue, penguin-like Pokémon. It has a wide, yellow beak that extends upward into three pointed horns that form a trident-shaped crest bracketing blue eyes. Large horns are a symbol of leadership and strength for Empoleon. There is a blue marking resembling a crown over its eyes and a white, lacy marking running down its chest. A blue, fin-like projection forms a collar around its throat and runs down the length of its chest and belly. On its back are two raised, gold bumps and a second bluefin that forms its tail. Its yellow feet are webbed with three toes each and its feathers form ruffs above its feet. It has wide, flipper-like wings rimmed with blue along with the tips, and three golden claws.
But Izuku pulled a fast one on the pokemon and immediately went into a bow. Emploeon was shocked by this, but after a minute of reflection, the pokemon also bowed to the teen, nearly grazing him with its large triton shaped head crest. Izuku waited for the pokemon to stand straight up again and immediately took out a berry while keeping his bowing position. Emploeon examined the berry in the teens hang and after a few seconds, it took the berry in its three-fingered flipper before gobbling it whole.
When Izuku finally heard the pokemon eating, he stood up and attempted to move around the large penguin, but the pokemon blocked him with a quick thrust of its large blade-like flipper! Izuku darted his eyes to the large pokemon and began to profusely sweat as he stared into its hard and determined eyes! But the pokemon did something that surprised the teen. It lowered its flipper and turned its back while leaning forward.
Izuku looked at the pokemon and its back for several seconds before finally asking, "You….want me to ride you?"
The pokemon appeared to nod while making some penguin noises. Even though this wasn't part of his plan, Izuku sure could make this work in his favor! So he climbed onto the pokemon back and had to hold on for dear life to its collar as it turned on its heels and lunged forward while sliding on the ice! Izuku screamed as the pokemon only seemed to pick up more and more speed, going along the track, dodging any other students, avoiding attack and projectiles, and steadily reaching the end of the icy terrain!
Though like most things, it didn't come without its troubles. As Walrein noticed the teen riding the pokemon and gave cages with equal speed! The walrus pokemon began to shoot Ice Balls at the teen, in an attempt to remove him from Emploeon! But Emploeon was quick and sensitive as it dodged each and every Ice Ball attack without even needing to look behind itself! Eventually, Walrein started to call out to Emploeon, and the two pokemon engaged in a conversation that Izuku could only think was going as he thought:
Walrein: What are you doing!? You're not supposed to be helping any of these kids out! You're supposed to be knocking them down!
Empoleon: I know that!
Walrein: Then why are you doing it!? Gar gave us clear instructions NOT to do this or show favoritism to anyone! Especially the people he likes!
Emploeon: He…...he gave me a berry.
Walrein: He what!?
But now back to the story at hand! Walrein wasn't giving up and charging its most powerful Ice Ball yet! The end of the course was closing in fast, and they needed to do something before…..well, whatever was going to happen to them afterward. And Izuku really didn't want to find that out.
So Emploeon was the one to save their butts as it shot an Ice Beam in front of it and created a ramp. The pokémon made several irregular swerving movements, causing Walrein to become confused and unable to follow behind them properly. To which Emploeon used this to use the ramp, fly off into the air, and leave their pursuer and the slush!
Izuku screamed like a girl as he flew through the air on top of the penguin pokémon's back! Until they landed in a large snow mound to cushion there out of control landing! Izuku burst out of the snow a few seconds later and shimmied his way out, jumping up and down while shaking off the cold feeling running through his bones! Emploeon rose up from the snowdrift with no sign of being affected by the landing or the cold.
After Izuku shook some warmth into himself, he finally put his feet on solid ground and ran off along the track while waving goodbye to Emploeon. Izuku ran across the track, keeping pace or out running several people along the way. As he kept running, he quickly noticed the temperature change drastically! In fact, it was so bad it was getting hard to breathe or keep breathing in! Sweat was dripping off his face fast, his shirt was getting soaked, and his limbs felt tired as he tried to force himself to run faster! But to no avail, it was just too hot!
Izuku knew then he was now in the Heating Hellfire Plains. Though after a quick look around, he didn't really see anything out of the ordinary. Sure it was so smoldering hot that his pants and underwear were soaked through, and there were a few oddly placed rocks, but that was it. So he decided to push on and try to make it out of this heat, fast as he could. And boy was that a mistake!
He had only run another 10m before everything started to drastically change again! The temperature went up, even more, the air was even harder to breathe with a permeable smell of brimstone, the ground was so hot that some people's shoes were feeling the heat straight through, the ground looked cracked and glowed a bit, almost like volcanic terrain. The grass and trees were dry, withered away, or completely on fire! There were giant stalactites protruding from the ground up, and streams of fire were shot from crevices all around the area!
This place really did look like a heated plain, but no hellfire per say, Izuku thought mildly in his head. Until a fireball careened beside his head and caused him to flinch just long enough for another one to head directly for him!
Izuku was stiff at the moment when he saw the fireball shooting straight for his head, and couldn't move his body a bit!
And just before it made contact, someone tackled Izuku from the side and caused him to fall far to the right and dodge the fire in the nick of time! He fell to the ground hard enough to knock his senses back into place and groaned once his pain receptors fired back up!
The person who tackled him, asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good. Thanks for the save back their…..", Izuku began to thank them until he saw who it was, paused, and exclaimed with shock, "Uraraka-san!"
"Deku-kun!", The girl cried with excitement while throwing her arms around his neck in a hug! Izuku flinches at the affection and ponders whether to hug her back. Until she broke away and said, "I'm so glad you're okay! I thought I wouldn't get to go to the next round with you. How did you get through?"
Izuku had to recollect the thoughts in his frazzled brain, and took a minute to respond telling her, "I was thinking this whole obstacle course wrong.", Uraraka tilted her head at this, expecting a better explanation. "We shouldn't try to avoid the pokémon, we should use them! Their forces of nature and nature have the same habits every time. We just have to read it correctly."
Uraraka made a face like her brain was buffering and then had a lightbulb as she exclaimed with a smile, "Deku-kun, you're a genius!"
Izuku blushed at the praise and rubbed his head, and replied frazzled, "Hahaha, well I wouldn't say that but-."
"So what do we do here?", She cut him off while peeking over their hiding spot.
"Um, well.", Izuku stuttered while trying to collect his thoughts and also peeking over the top, only to see several different strong fire types shooting fireballs and breathing torrents of flames!
"We've got Magmar, Magmortor, Slugma and Magcargo, Charmeleon and Charizard, Talonflame, Typhlosion, Volcaroina, and…. yikes!", Izuku yelped as a fireball flew over the top of the stalagmite! He ducks back down and says with a panicked tone, "That's a lot of fire types!"
Through his observation, Izuku did also notice that the Fire types weren't trying to hurt anyone. Just knock em down or keep them from advancing. The fireballs they threw at people only had as much power as a normal projectile. And real damage done would only result in minor burns. Flame breathes we're only used to make roadblocks and stop speeding people!
"Gar really didn't pull any punches this time!", Uraraka half shouts as another fireball directly hits their hiding rock causing it to break apart! The brunette wipes sweat from her forehead and complains, "I think I liked the cold place better.", She shakes her wet hands off and looking around she asks, "Any ideas?"
Izuku looked around and assessed everything in his mind. All the Fire types were lined up identically to the ice type Pokémon; standing on the sidelines, spaced out evenly, and shooting their respective elements. But knowing Fire-type Pokemon Izuku knew off the bat he wasn't going to be able to trick them, outmaneuver them or make peace with them. And there was nothing around to use apart from the berries starting to melt in their pockets: just fire and rocks.
But that's when it dawned on him, and turning to Uraraka he said, "All Fire types have a shot limit and time usage. They still need to take in oxygen to shoot their fire out, otherwise, they'll burn themselves out."
"So all we gotta do is wait, and then run for it?", She asked and Izuku nodded.
So the two of them sat tight and watched the Fire types like hawks! All of them disputed and shot fire with no notable sign of stopping or care. It almost seemed like they didn't have a limit and we're just going off and ultimate energy. Though that was soon debunked as Magmar stopped breathing fire and began to shoot out embers instead. Very quickly all the other Pokemon fell in line and had to take a breather from shooting fire.
Izuku saw this, and taking their chance he grabbed Uraraka's hand while shouting, "Now!"
The two of them burst from their hiding spot and ran fast as they could through the excruciating heat! The pokémon immediately noticed them and attempted to blast fire their way! But to no avail, as the only thing that came from their mouths was hot embers or smoke. So the two teens ran through without any trouble, but decided not to look back or slow down for any reason!
That is until Charizard tried to make a last-ditch effort activating it's Over Heat attack and prepared to fire it at the teens! But once it looked like the pokémon would for at will, the only thing that got heated was the pokémon itself. The attack backfired and caused Charizard to burn himself out into unconsciousness!
The teens kept running through the line of burnt out Fire types until they disappeared from behind. Even though they avoided the literal firing line, the two of them noticed just how hot it continued to grow! If they didn't feel like they were in a volcanic region, then they sure as hell do now! It was so hot that they were already getting first degree burns and the souls of their shoes were starting to melt!
They tried to ignore it and push on, but then something fell from the sky and landed right at their feet with a loud CRASH! It was a boulder, the size of a small child, and had red hot heat veins all over it. It made a sizzling sound and was hot from simply approaching it. The two teens looked up to see where the stone came from, and standing atop the lip of a small pseudo volcano was a very pissed off pokémon!
It was a quadruped Pokémon that resembles a Bactrian camel. It has two gray volcanoes on its back. It also has a stout body with red shaggy fur and three blue ring-shaped markings on both sides. It has banged on top of its head, droopy ears, and a tan fur-less muzzle.
Izuku tilted his head at the pokémon and asked in confusion, "Camerupt?"
The Pokémon, Camerupt, blasted hot ash from its nostrils, pawed at the ground, and shook its volcano-like humps in an intimidating manner. A small rumbling sounded through the area around them and vibrated the small stones around them. The teens were struck in frozen fear as they felt the quaking get more and more powerful! It was almost like it was traveling up!
Camerupt stood atop the small volcano and didn't seem bothered or affected by the rumbling. It made an angered expression as it stared at the teens, and without a warning, it let loose a deep bellowing moo sound that caused the volcano and its humps to explode in a huge force and rain down a shower of molten hellfire!
The two teens ran in varying directions as they tried to dodge the onslaught of molten rocks raining down from all over! Camerupt continued to scream in a constant mooing sound while shooting continuous streams of fire from it's back and raining it down on the two dancing teens!
Uraraka eventually manages to touch a very large and flat boulder nearby, and ushers Izuku underneath for shelter! The hot stones and molten material continued to fall around them as they squatted in the center of their roof while trying to catch their breaths!
Then the two teens heard Gar's voice ring over the torrents of falling fire as he announced from the sky, "Uh-oh folks. Looks like some of the students have crossed paths with Camerupt! This pokémoms internal body heat is well over 10,000 degrees! How we know this is beyond me. Every time I try to stick a thermometer up his butt, it always catches fire.", He says jokingly while avoiding a rogue molten fireball. "And he looks really pissed today! Hope they can get through, nothing is worse than a lava burn, take my word for it."
"What's with that pokémon?! I thought Gar said the Pokémon wouldn't be trying to hurt us?! But that thing is nearly ready to melt or crush us!", Uraraka shouts as she pats out her singed uniform!
"There is definitely something wrong with Camerupt, and I think I know what it is. But it'll be risky.", Izuku tells her while shaking sweat from his shirt.
"So what can I do to help?", Uraraka asks him with a determined expression.
Izuku thanks for a moment and then asks her back, "You got any berries?"
"Not really.", She replies, dejected wall stuffing her hands into her pockets. "They're all pretty much melted.", She told him while sloshing around through the contacts and pulling out the juice and half-melted berries. "Oh wait! I got this one.", She suddenly said while pulling out a very unusual looking berry that was oval-shaped colored pink with a white patch on the top and bottom. "It's kinda weird, the skin is soft but it sounds slothy on the inside.", She told him while shaking the berry up to her ear.
"That's just what I need!", Izuku exclaimed while taking the berry!
"So now what?"
"We wait until Camerupt tires itself out, and then you throw me with your quirk, right up to him!"
"What?!", She exclaimed in shock! "But Deku-kun, even without fire, that pokémon could easily-."
"Uraraka.", Izuku calmed her down with a soft tone. "Have I led you astray yet?"
She narrowed her eyes at him and replied, "Actually yes. You did. Remember when you threw me out of the ice place and left yourself there?"
Izuku sweat drops and says back, "Ok yeah, I did do that. But this isn't that plan, I promise!"
Uraraka looked like she really wanted to fight back on his terms, but his expression made her cave in as she huffed and said to him, "I really do fine saying no to you very hard.", She took a deep breath and then pumped herself upholding both of her hands into fists while saying, "Okay! Let's do it!"
Izuku nodded and quickly told his plan to her. She nods back and gets ready for their time to strike. Camerupt was still screaming like a mad animal and shooting fire everywhere! Every now and again another racer would try to pass by the crazed Pokemon and its fiery assault, but ended up having to run away in the opposite direction, just barely making it past, or having to take shelter! Just as Izuku said, Camerupt eventually did tire itself out and had to rest from shooting fire everywhere.
That's when Izuku shouted, "Now Uraraka!"
And the girl took away the boy's gravity, then threw him up into the air! Right above Camerupt! Izuku sailed through the air and readied the berry in his hands!
Camerupt sees the young teen above him and takes a deep breath while preparing to force out another fire attack from its hump volcanoes? Izak sees the Pokémon race it's head up and then throws the berry directly at it? The fruit hits the Pokemon's face and eyes, immediately splattering all over like a water balloon and blinding the Pokemon causing it to flinch!
Izuku gives the signal to Uraraka, and the girl touches her fingertips together causing Izuku to fall back down to Earth! But by this time he had already positioned himself right above the camera at the tip of the volcano. There he tucked and rolled to the ground and slid right underneath the Pokemon's belly. Camerupt was unaware of what the team was doing due to its still being blinded by the berry juice, and Osaka took the chance to work the second part of his plan.
From there he began to tickle the pokémon's belly with both his hands and feet. Pokemon felt the sensation and immediately began to twitch and sway about at the sensation. Even producing a sound similar to that of laughter as it tried to get the boys to stop. Seeing Camerupt had calmed down significantly, an easy coup then positioned his left foot in between the pokémon's groin and stomach, I'm with one swift motion He kicked the Pokémon right in that region!
The Pokemon made a shocked expression at the sensation before a look of pure leaf washed over its face accompanied by a very loud sound from its butt that went like this.
Pppppppppppppppppppppppffffffffffffffffffff!
The Pokemon then immediately fell over onto its side with a relaxed and calm derpy face and began to moo constantly. Izuku picked himself off the hot ground and dusted himself off while sighing with relief at his plan working.
Soon Uraraka ran up the volcano to join him and said excitedly, "Deku-kun! That was amazing! How did you know that would work and how did it work?"
"A Camerupt diet mostly consists of rocks and minerals, especially sulfur. And when they eat it, it builds up gas. But they can't express that gas easily. So it builds up in their intestines and makes them really agitated. So all I did was apply pressure to its intestines and helped get the gas out.", He explained while motioning to the much calmer pokémon lying half-conscious on the floor.
"P.U! It sure smells!", The girl complained while plugging up her nose at the horrid burning smell!
"But at least Camerupt is happy, and it's way cooler.", Izuku told her.
Uraraka took a moment to feel and take note of her surroundings, and sure enough, it was significantly cooler than a mere minute ago. "Oh yeah, it is!", She exclaimed excitedly!
Izuku then grabbed her arm and told her, "Come on! Let's get going while we're still ahead!"
"R-Right!", She stutters out all red-faced as the teen pulls her along.
Once the two teens took off down the volcano and out of the plains towards the rest of the obstacle course, Gar jumped off the Pokemon from the air and landed on the volcano, next to the peaceful Camerupt.
"Why didn't you tell me you were gassy, buddy? I wouldn't have made you participate if you told me.", He told the pokémon, who made a soft and lazy moo in reply.
Meanwhile, back at the stadium, Present Mic and Aizawa we're watching the teens progress with anticipation and extreme observation.
While Mic was giving a play-by-play of everything going down when he announced in a mysterious tone, "Well everyone, looks like an easy path to the next challenge has been cleared ahead for everyone else! Let's see if surviving the element was harder than this one! The students are sure gonna have one heck of a time trying to pass The Tightrope Traps!"
