Chapter 59: Dates and Duels
Skit 1: Cards of Fate
Voshkie'ahk is reading a book in the school library, flipping over a page and enjoying the peace that the library usually brings.
"Hello, Voshkie'ahk," she looks up as Pyrrha Nikos approaches her.
"Hello, Pyrrha. What's up?" Voshkie'ahk greets her.
"I wanted to ask you for a favor, Voshkie'ahk," Pyrrha says.
"What kind of favor?" Voshkie'ahk cocks her head.
"I was hoping you could be my sparring partner for today. Everyone else is either busy, or..." she trails off.
"Or not skilled or strong enough to take on the Champion of Mistral," Voshkie'ahk finishes, making Pyrrha chuckle nervously. "Well, I suppose I could help you out. It's been a little while since my last training session too," Voshkie'ahk closes her book and stands up.
"Thanks. I appreciate it," Pyrrha bows respectively.
...
The two head to the arena where sparring matches are conducted for the students. Voshkie'ahk takes out a few cards while Pyrrha draws her sword and shield. A moment later, Pyrrha runs forth, jumping into the air with her sword at the ready. Voshkie'ahk uses her semblance to harden her cards before parrying the blade. She starts twirling around while swinging her cards like fans at Pyrrha. Pyrrha blocks with her shield before switching her sword to its rifle form. She fires off a few shots at Voshkie'ahk, but she blocks them with her cards. Voshkie'ahk then counters by throwing a few fire and ice Dust cards at Pyrrha. Pyrrha dodges them, glancing back as they explode around her. Voshkie'ahk draws more cards and throws them at Pyrrha, this time using lightning and gravity Dust cards. Pyrrha dodges most of them, but her foot lands on one gravity Dust card and gets stuck. Voshkie'ahk uses this chance to throw a jump kick at her, but Pyrrha blocks with her shield and pushes Voshkie'ahk back. She then stabs the card with her sword to free herself.
Voshkie'ahk takes out a few more cards and creates her card swords. Pyrrha changes her sword into its spear form. They charge at each other and make several strikes with their blades. The two find themselves evenly matched as Voshkie'ahk swings both sword downwards, only for Pyrrha to block with her spear.
"No wonder people call you a skilled fighter," Voshkie'ahk smirks.
"You're no slouch yourself. With your cards being made the way they are, I can't even use my semblance on them," Pyrrha replies.
She was hoping that Voshkie'ahk would be a good training partner and the young girl didn't disappoint. Pyrrha pushes her back and swings her spear at her legs, but Voshkie'ahk backflips away from her. Pyrrha gives chase and makes a few thrusts at Voshkie'ahk, who deflects the spear with her swords. She swings her blades again, but Pyrrha spins around to block them with her shield on her back. Even when she's not holding the shield, her defense is impeccable. The two fighters separate again. Just then, the door to the arena opens up.
"Hey, this is where you guys were," Jaune walks in, unaware of his bad timing.
Pyrrha throws her spear at Voshkie'ahk, who leans back to evade it and it ends up flying straight at Jaune.
"Ah!" Jaune screams as his hoodie gets hit by the spear and he ends up pinned to a wall. "Aw, not again," he mopes.
"Jaune! I'm sorry!" Pyrrha immediately runs over to help her partner.
Voshkie'ahk sighs, "I guess the match ends in a no contest then. Oh well," she shrugs her shoulders, since Pyrrha's completely forgotten about the match by this point.
Skit 2: Birthday Surprise
In Team KEPL's room, Khazhak looks around as his teammates and Team RWBY stare back at him. He called everyone here on short notice, so no one knows what's really going on.
"So, Khazhak, care to explain what's so important that you brought us all into your team's room?" Weiss asks.
Khazhak crosses his arms, "My sister's birthday is in three days and I want to throw a party for her,"
"Oh, really! That means we get to have a-," Ruby gets stars in her eyes, only for Weiss and Yang to pull her down.
"You're not throwing her a surprise party," everyone says.
"Aw, why not?" Ruby pouts.
"Because I want my sister to live to see her next birthday. If it wasn't for me and Neptune, Professor Port would've died. Like, died-died," Khazhak says.
"It wasn't that bad!" Ruby complains.
"Anyway, I want to make sure Voshkie has a nice birthday this year since it'll be the first one with all of us. So, cake, presents, balloons, the whole shebang," Khazhak lists off everything.
"I'll help Ruby bake the cake, and make sure she ONLY bakes the cake," Yang says, scrutinizing her sister.
"I'll help out with that," Porphyrius raises a hand.
"We'll get the balloons and decorations," Blake and Weiss volunteer.
"Then the rest of us will get presents," Edom says.
"Hey, what about Yukari? Shouldn't she be here for this? I mean, she is Voshkie'ahk's girlfriend," Ruby asks.
"As much as I hate that no-good witch, I suppose Voshkie'ahk would want her to be there. Which is why, against my better judgment, I contacted her about the party. However, Yukari said that she was super busy with her work schedule and said she wouldn't be able to make it. She said she'll send over a gift for Voshkie'ahk and wanted it delivered to her room. I'll break the news to my sister," Khazhak explains.
"Okay, then let's make sure she can still enjoy the party. Let's do it!" Lloyd cheers.
The next two days are a blur for the two teams as they work on buying presents, getting decorations together, and cooking up sweets and treats for the party. With some input from Khazhak and the girls, they find a few nice gifts for Voshkie'ahk. Yang and Porphyrius keep Ruby focused on baking a cake and doing nothing else, lest the party get ruined by her antics. They take extra precautions to make sure Voshkie'ahk doesn't notice anything and that's easier said than done given her training as a huntress. Somehow, they managed to do it and everything is ready on the special day.
...
Voshkie'ahk walks into a darkened kitchen one day, only to have the light suddenly turn on.
"Surprise! Happy birthday!" she finds everyone inside with gifts and confetti.
"What is all this?" Voshkie'ahk looks around.
"Come on, Voshkie'ahk, did you forget it was your birthday?" Khazhak pats his sister's head.
"Oh, I guess I did. You didn't put Ruby in charge of it, did you?" Voshkie'ahk asks.
"I am not that bad!" Ruby yells, tired ot people taking pot shots at her.
"Anyway, let's get this party started. You still need to blow out the candles," Khazhak says.
Voshkie'ahk looks around and notices someone missing, "Um, where's Yukari?"
Khazhak sighs, "I called her to tell her about the party, but she said that she wouldn't make it in time due to her busy work schedule. She wanted you to know that she's sorry and that she sent her gift over. It was pretty big, but it's waiting in your room, per her request. You can see it after we take care of things here,"
"Oh, okay," Voshkie'ahk is a little sad that her girlfriend isn't here for the party, but she doesn't want to waste everyone's hard work.
She blows out the candles on the cake, wishing that Yukari was there for her birthday. Everyone gives her their gifts, eat slices of cake, and have a merry time. Once the party comes to a close, Voshkie'ahk returns to her room while everyone else cleans up. Inside, she finds a big box gift-wrapped for her. She opens it up, only to gasp at the gift inside.
"Surprise. Happy birthday, Voshkie darling," the gift is Yukari herself.
"Yukari!" Voshkie'ahk happily hugs her girlfriend. "I thought you were too busy with work.
"I'm never too busy for you, darling. I wouldn't miss your birthday for the world," Yukari replies.
"This is the best birthday present ever," Voshkie'ahk sighs with joy.
"And this gift just keeps on giving," Yukari says before kissing her girlfriend.
Yep, definitely the best birthday gift in Voshkie'ahk's mind.
Skit 3: Fashion Crazy
"I really appreciate you doing this for me, Voshkie'ahk," Coco says.
"It's fine. I owed you one anyway. We're almost there," Voshkie'ahk replies.
The two young women are out in Vale as Voshkie'ahk escorts Coco to Yukari's business. She had promised Coco that if the former helped her with some combat training, that she'd treat her to a fashion shopping day at her girlfriend's place for a discount. Something the fashionista was very eager to enjoy.
"It's always so hard to get into Yukari's shop sometimes. EVERYONE wants to buy and wear her products. I can't blame them though," Coco notes.
"Right, well, this is one of the few days she's closed, but she gave me a heads-up and told me to come through the back entrance so no one sees us. It might cause a scene. She said we'd have the whole place to ourselves for the day," Voshkie'ahk says.
"Sounds good to me," Coco likes the sound of that.
They reach Yukari's store and head around back to the back entrance. Knocking on it three times, they don't have to wait long before Yukari opens the door.
"Voshkie darling, I'm so happy to see you," Yukari wraps her arms around her girlfriend and kisses her all over her cheeks.
"Yes, yes, I'm happy to see you too, Yukari. May we come in now?" Voshkie'ahk pats her head.
"Yes, come in, come in!" Yukari hurries the pair inside before closing the door and leading them to the front of the store. "Alright ladies, as promised, this whole store is ours for the day. Try on whatever interests you. But, if you rip or tear anything, you're paying for it," Yukari points at Coco.
"Wait, why just me? What about Voshkie'ahk?" Coco looks offended.
"Because she's my precious darling. She can rip my clothes and I wouldn't be bothered at all. Especially if they were the clothes on my back right now," Yukari winks at her girlfriend, which only makes her blush.
"U-um, let's see what you have to wear Yukari," Voshkie'ahk tries to change the subject.
The three girls go on a fashion spree, trying out different dresses, hats, and accessories. A few times, Voshkie'ahk would catch Coco trying to sneak a peek at Yukari as she changes out clothes in one of the changing rooms so she can check her out in her underwear. Voshkie'ahk would hit Coco with an ice Dust card for that.
"No one gets to look at Yukari in her underwear but me," Voshkie'ahk puffs her cheeks and grumbles.
"Fine, fine, I'll back off from Yukari," Coco waves her hands in surrender.
Thankfully, Yukari didn't notice. Yukari comes out as Voshkie'ahk heads inside to try out a few dresses. Coco then smirks as a delicious idea comes to mind. She said she'd back off from checking out Yukari. But, she never said anything about Voshkie'ahk. She tip-toes to Voshkie'ahk's changing room, looking to check her out as she strips off her clothing. Coco chuckles as she looks through the crack in the door, seeing Voshkie'ahk getting ready to get changed. However...
"You never learn, do you," Coco looks back as Yukari, wearing a very scary smile on her face, appears behind her.
Suffice it to say, Coco learned her lessons and just stuck to trying on clothes. Voshkie'ahk noticed she looked very pale at the end of the day, but didn't ask anything. Better that she doesn't know.
