The world shattered in a thousand glittering shards. Serenity couldn't breathe, couldn't think. She couldn't exist without her guardians. Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury—their names echoed in her mind like a mournful litany, each syllable a dagger to her heart.

How could this have happened? How were they gone?

Serenity's legs gave way beneath her, and she crumpled to the cold marble floor. The pristine white of her gown pooled around her like spilled moonlight. Flickering, the once-brilliant glow that bathed the palace cast long, sorrowful shadows across the floor. The very air felt heavy with grief, offering its own silent cries that joined with hers.

Heavy sobs wracked her chest. They threatened to tear her apart from the inside out. "They're gone. They're all gone," she whispered, her voice barely audible even in the eerie silence of the deserted corridor.

Endymion had abandoned the battlefield. There wasn't a point in fighting anymore. Not when Venus had done what she could to help. She'd sacrificed herself to give the rest of them a fighting chance. Now only Queen Beryl, the Heavenly Kings, and a dozen of the strongest minions remained.

They'd go straight for Serenity and the Legendary Silver Crystal. He had to be there to save her, to stop them from succeeding. Even if it took his life.

The reality of their loss crashed over Serenity in waves, each realization bringing fresh agony. No more of Venus's radiant smile and unwavering leadership. They had extinguished Jupiter's strength and protective warmth. Mars's fiery passion and intuitive wisdom were lost to the void. Like a candle in the wind, the Dark Kingdom extinguished Mercury's gentle intelligence and steadfast loyalty.

Endymion could feel the anguish rolling off her in waves, each second more potent and suffocating. The bond between them pulsed with her swirling emotions—grief, guilt, fear, and a love so profound it threatened to consume them both. It guided him through the darkened corridors until he found her. Sliding across the polished floor, he kneeled beside her, his arms encircling her trembling form, trying to shield her from a sorrow that felt too vast to bear.

"Serenity," he murmured, his voice rough. "My love, I'm so sorry. I'm here. I'm here."

She turned her face into his chest, her fingers clutching desperately at his armor. He smelled wrong, like blood and smoke, but his warmth was the same. The metal was cool against her feverish skin, grounding her in the midst of her sorrow.

"How can I go on without them, Endymion?" she sobbed. "They were more than my guardians—they were my sisters, my dearest friends. How can the Moon Kingdom stand when its brightest lights have been extinguished?"

He stroked her hair, the silken strands like spun moonlight between his fingers. A pang of guilt surged through him as he realized how stained his hands were, tainted by the blood of so many. She was so pure, so untouched by the darkness. He felt unworthy of laying his hands on her. Yet, he couldn't pull away.

She didn't care that the evidence of war lingered on his skin, corrupted his armor. It didn't matter, because she needed him to hold her, needed to press her face into his chest. Right now, he was the only thing preventing her from being lost to the storm of anguish.

Every fiber of his body wished he could absorb her pain, take it into himself and spare her this agony. But all he could do was hold her, be her anchor in this storm of grief that threatened to sweep her away. Just as she had been for him after his father's death, he could be that for her now.

"Your guardians will live again, Serenity," he said softly. "Their strength, their love, their unwavering devotion—they'll live again. You'll live again and together you'll be happy."

Serenity lifted her tear-stained face to meet his gaze. In the depths of his eyes, she saw a reflection of her own pain, but also the truth of his words. It kindled a spark within her, a tiny flame of hope in the darkness of despair.

"I saw it, Serenity, my rosebud," Endymion whispered, his voice trembling. "Their star seeds ascending into the stars. They'll make it to the Galaxy Cauldron and be reborn."

"Really?"

He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Yes. The Galaxy Cauldron will see them reborn, and you'll have more lives together. But we have to keep moving. Beryl and her forces are still out there. We have to find a safe place."

As if in response to his words, a distant explosion rocked the palace, sending tremors through the floor beneath them. The sound of shattering crystal and crumbling stone rippled through the corridor, a chilling reminder of the destruction that was drawing ever closer.

She gripped him just a little tighter, a flash of fear on her face. He held on just a little tighter. Then Serenity took a deep, shuddering breath. Right now, she was the last defender of the Moon Kingdom, and she owed it to her fallen friends, to her mother, to her people, to stand tall against the darkness.

"I know where to go," she said.

Endymion helped her to her feet, his touch gentle yet sure. As they stood together in the shadowed hallway, the bond between them pulsed with a new energy. Whatever came next, they'd face it together. He wouldn't abandon her to walk the path destiny laid out. She'd never leave him to face fate alone.

"Follow me." She gave his hand a small tug.

Another explosion, closer this time, spurred them into motion. Hand in hand, they raced down the corridor, their footsteps echoing in the emptiness. As they ran, Serenity sent a silent prayer to her fallen guardians, begging the gods to see them reborn into peaceful lives.

The palace corridors, once a labyrinth of light and beauty, had become a maze of shadows and danger. The once pristine Moon Palace now lay in ruins, a haunting testament to the Dark Kingdom's destructive powers. Shards of shattered crystal crunched under their feet with each step, the sound echoing ominously through the empty halls.

Everywhere smelled like smoke and blood, remind her with each breath that this was the end. Distant explosions continued, sending tremors through the floor, causing the remaining chandeliers to sway precariously overhead, their crystals tinkling like mourning stars.

Occasionally, they'd encounter patches if stone trickling across the crystal, leaving nothing but dead gray in its wake. Endymion and Serenity had to turn around several times to prevent being captured by that corruption.

Serenity led the way, her intimate knowledge of the Moon Palace guiding their steps. Endymion followed close behind, his senses on high alert for any sign of the Dark Kingdom.

"Now I'm thankful I dodged all those lessons," Serenity chuckled. "The time I spent exploring was well worth it now."

Endymion managed a small smile despite the tension. "It seems your curiosity and sense of adventure are our greatest assets now. I always knew there was more to you than just a princess."

They rounded a corner, and Serenity suddenly pulled him into an alcove, her body pressing against his as they hid in the narrow space. Her heart thundered so loudly she swore it was audible across the palace. Pressed so close, she could feel the rapid rise and fall of his breath.

"What is it?" he whispered, his lips close to her ear.

"The moon is warning us someone is coming."

"Who…"

Serenity put a finger to his lips, her eyes wide with fear. In the silence that followed, he heard it—the steady, deliberate footsteps echoing down the hallway they'd just fled. A chill ran down his spine as he recognized the rhythm.

"Kunzite," he breathed, the name a painful reminder of yet another loss.

He pulled Serenity just a little closer, wrapping his arms around her, silently begging the moon to keep her safe. The steady clops grew closer, each one like a hammer blow to his heart. Kunzite had been his most trusted advisor, a brother in all but blood. Now, Endymion didn't recognize him.

It would have been better if Kunzite had died. Then Endymion wouldn't have to face the hollow shell of his former friend, conflict after conflict. But this twisted version of Kunzite was hunting them, and the pain of that betrayal cut deeper than any wound.

"I know you're here," Kunzite's voice rang out, cold and mocking. "I can sense your fear, Your Highness. I can taste your desperation. Why not make this easy on yourself and surrender? Beryl will make you her king. Together you'll rule Earth and the Moon."

Serenity let out a small sound, her eyes growing even more wide. Endymion squeezed her elbow, and she gave a quick nod. Biting the bottom of her lip, she pressed herself into his chest.

"You disappoint me, Endymion," Kunzite continued, his voice drawing nearer. "Hiding like a coward with your moon princess. What happened to the warrior that trained alongside me? The man I respected? You're making a mistake. Come with me. We'll reunite together with all the Heavenly Kings."

Endymion's jaw clenched, every muscle in his body coiled and ready to spring. He wanted to confront Kunzite, to try one last time to reach the man he'd once called a friend. But Serenity's presence reminded him of what was at stake. If he lost this fight, then she'd be at the mercy of the Dark Kingdom.

A flicker of movement caught Serenity's eye—a tendril of darkness creeping along the floor, searching, probing. She tugged at his sleeve, pointing at the encroaching shadow. Understanding flashed in his eyes. With a swift, fluid motion, he unsheathed his sword.

But before he could make a move, moonbeams glimmered around the metal. Slowly they inched across the surface until his sword glowed. Serenity gave him a quick nod.

In one powerful stroke, he severed the tendrils of darkness.

A howl of rage shot through the corridor, and suddenly Kunzite was there, his silver hair wild, his eyes blazing with a malevolent energy. "There you are," he snarled, dark power crackling around him.

"Run!" Endymion shouted, pushing Serenity ahead of him as he stayed between her and Kunzite.

She sprinted down the hallway as he turned to block Kunzite. When she reached the corner, Serenity slid before scrambling back. All her fears seemed to come to life.

Endymion parried Kunzite's first attack. The crashing sound of metal kissing metal reverberated through the hall.

"Fight me, Endymion!" Kunzite's voice boomed.

His blade, wrapped in ethereal moonlight, clashed against Kunzite's dark sword. Sparks flew as light and shadow collided, each strike a testament to their shared history and divergent fates. Kunzite's eyes flashed with a renewed darkness, burning with evil as he pressed his attack.

Endymion found himself on the defensive, parrying blows and struggling to not give ground. No matter what, he had to prevent Kunzite from getting Serenity. He could sense her waiting just around the corner, fear pulsing like a wild stallion.

"You've grown weak, Endymion," Kunzite taunted, his blade a blur of shadowy motion. "Love has made you soft."

But Endymion knew he was wrong. A surge of strength flowed through him, and he knew it was from her. Serenity was offering whatever help she could. With a cry that reflected through the shattered halls, he countered, his moonlight sword cutting through Kunzite's defenses.

The blade scored a glancing blow, and Kunzite staggered back, genuine surprise flickering across his face. For a second, Endymion thought he caught a glimmer of his old friend, but darkness quickly consumed it once more.

Using his advantage, Endymion pressed Kunzite harder. His former friend gave ground, one step at a time. Serenity kept urging him onward, and then he knew what she wanted him to do. With a furious set of strikes, Kunzite stumbled back.

The moment Kunzite landed in a patch of moonlight, the luminance exploded. Kunzite screamed as the light bound him, burning away at him. Tendrils of darkness pulsed and bubbled from his skin. Endymion knew this was their only chance to flee.

"You can't escape!" Kunzite yelled, his voice echoing through the corridors as dark energy blasted through the beams of light, shattering crystal around him.

Endymion turned and ran, practically yanking Serenity off her feet as he skidded around the corner. She led them through a dizzying series of turns, her mind racing to recall every secret passage and hidden door her explorations had uncovered. Behind them, the sounds of pursuit grew fainter, but the oppressive feeling of darkness continued to press around her.

The moon was screaming out in pain, the agony of being slowly consumed by the poisonous darkness. Even her body was suffering, and she knew before long the moon would snap. And she didn't know what would happen to her after that.

Endymion desperately held onto her hand as they burst through a concealed door into a small, circular room. Ancient lunar symbols covered the walls, glowing faintly in response to Serenity's presence.

"Here," she said, breathless. Whispering a prayer, she pressed her hand against a glyph. The wall shimmered and parted, revealing a narrow passageway. "This will lead us to the attendant's passageways. We can lose him there."

Endymion nodded, struggling to calm his breathing. A thin line of blood trickled from a cut on his cheek. "You go first," he said, casting a wary glance back the way they'd come. "I'll seal it behind us."

A wave of cold air crashed into her as she stepped into the passage. A faint trace of moonflowers danced on the air and whispered its welcome. She sent up a silent prayer for the safety of her mother, Luna, and the other officials. For the guardians and their kings. For everyone caught in this web of darkness and destiny.

Endymion cast a last glance before he entered the passage and pulled the door shut. The stone ground shut behind him. The cool air was a relief after the frenzied flight and battle before. It stung as it caressed the cuts on his skin and froze the sweat on his brow.

In the close confines of the secret tunnel, illuminated only by the soft glow of Serenity's crescent mark, they paused. Endymion pulled her close, their foreheads touching as they shared a breath. Everything inside of him spoke the truth. This was the end. Before long, death would separate them.

"We're still here," he whispered. "We're still fighting."

Serenity nodded, drawing strength from the warmth of his body, from the love that pulsed between them. "Together."

Unable to bid his goodbye any other way, he leaned forward, his heart pounding. She didn't move as he pressed his lips to hers. The kiss was gentle at first, a soft meeting of lips that conveyed all the love and desperation he felt.

Her hands found their way to his chest, clutching at the edges of his armor as she responded, the warmth of her lips melding with his. Time seemed to stand still, the chaos around them fading into nothingness. In that brief, stolen moment, they were the only two souls in the universe, bound together by a love that transcended the darkness closing in on them.

He pulled away just enough to rest his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the space between them. "I love you," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Always."

Tears sparkled in her eyes, but she managed a small, resolute smile. "And I love you, Endymion. Forever."

Hand in hand once more, they pressed on into the unknown depths of the Moon Palace, the echoes of battle and destruction fading behind them. The secret tunnel stretched before them, a passageway that only contained shadow and whispered echoes. Serenity's crescent mark cast a soft silvery glow, barely illuminating the path ahead.

The walls seemed to close in around him, the weight of the Moon Palace above pressing down. Occasionally, a rumble would rock the space, sending a rainfall of debris on them. With each impact, Serenity seemed to buckle.

Endymion clung to her, praying that she'd make it. His hand tightened around hers, his thumb tracing gentle circles on her skin. Each touch was a silent promise, a desperate attempt to memorize the feeling of her beside him.

"Serenity," he whispered, his voice almost lost in the distant rumble of the chaos above. "Do you know why I called you Rosebud?"

"No."

"From the first moment I met you, you were the bloom in my heart, the symbol of beginnings and love."

She stopped and turned to him, a smile on her face. "Really?"

He pressed a soft kiss to her lips. "Yes, and that's what you'll be in every life we live."

"You're talking like we won't make it."

"I don't think we are going to."

That smile transformed into a mournful frown. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "I don't think we are going to survive either."

He grabbed onto her. "Promise me. Promise me you'll be reborn. That we'll find each other. Promise."

She pulled him into a warm embrace. "I promise, my love. I promise. We'll find each other and live a hundred lifetimes together."

Endymion nodded, choking back tears. Swallowing hard against the lump in his throat, he wanted to believe her words. But the sense of impending doom was overwhelming.

They continued through the winding passage, clinging to each other, the silence broken only by their footsteps and the occasional distant explosion. Serenity led them deeper into the palace's heart. Suddenly, the tunnel opened to a vast underground chamber. Crystalline pillars stretched upward, disappearing into the shadows above. In the center of the room stood an ancient lunar artifact, a mirror-like surface that reflected the soft light of Serenity's crescent mark.

The Eternity Main System stood before them, its mirror-like surface rippling with an otherworldly energy.

Serenity approached it, her hand hovering just above its surface. "This artifact is more than just a record keeper. Mercury and the scholars of planet Mercury, with the help of Pluto, created it. It's connected to the very fabric of space-time, designed to preserve not just memories, but the essence of our kingdom, our legacy."

Endymion approached the artifact, his reflection wavering on its surface. "Why did you bring us here?"

"I wanted to make sure it was intact." She looked away.

"Tell me the truth."

"I was afraid mother was going to upload her consciousness to protect me."

"Because then you'd control the Silver Crystal."

As if in response to her words, images flickered across the mirror's surface. Moments of their time together, both joyous and heartbreaking, played out before them. Their first meeting, stolen glances across crowded ballrooms, quiet moments in the palace gardens, and finally, their desperate flight through the crumbling Moon Kingdom.

Tears fell freely down Serenity's cheeks as she watched their story unfold. Endymion wrapped his arms around her from behind, holding her close as they witnessed their love immortalized in the eternal artifact.

"One day, Serenity."

"We'll be together forever, Endymion."

A massive explosion wracked the space. Dust and fragments of crystal rained down from above. Serenity held onto him as the room swayed.

"We need to move," Endymion said. "Which way?"

Serenity cast one last look at the Eternity Main System, its surface now dark and silent once more. "There's a passage that leads to the surface," she said, pointing to a small opening on the far side of the chamber. "It'll take us to the palace gardens."

He clutched her hand tightly as they reached the passage. A bone-chilling laugh reverberated through the air, sending shivers down his spine. Serenity gasped and looked wildly about.

"Did you think you could hide from me forever?" Beryl's voice cut through the darkness. "I'm coming for you, moon princess. You'll watch as I make Endymion mine! You'll never have him in this life or any others!"

She looked up at him with sorrow and despair etched in her beautiful eyes. He traced a hand down her cheek.

"I'll never be hers, no matter what she says," he whispered.

Serenity shuddered, and he held onto her as he guided her through the passage. As they ascended towards the surface, towards the last battle with Beryl and the forces of the Dark Kingdom, Serenity and Endymion clung to each other and to the promise of the future.

The end was near, but so too was a new beginning.

The passage ahead of them exploded in a shower of crystal and stone dust. The deafening blast echoed through the tunnel, and Endymion instinctively shielded Serenity with his body. As the debris settled, he found himself face to face with a pair of cold, familiar eyes.

Endymion's heart sank as he recognized the figure before him. Serenity tightened her grasp on his back, staying close to him.

"Nephrite," he breathed, the name heavy with the weight of betrayal.

The corrupted Heavenly King stood before them, dark energy crackling around his form. All the shadows seemed to bend towards him, worshiping him like the light worshiped Serenity.

"End of the line, old friend," Nephrite said, his voice devoid of emotion.

Serenity gripped Endymion's arm, fear pulsing through the bond. Nephrite blocked the path ahead and behind them only lay darkness. They were trapped.

Endymion tightened his grip on his sword, preparing for this fight. The weight familiar, yet he was still reluctant to raise it to face his friend.

Endymion tightened his grip on his sword, preparing for the fight of his life. The blade felt like an extension of his determination and love for Serenity. As Nephrite raised his hand, dark energy swirling around his fingertips.

How were they going to escape this?

The oppressive silence stretched, each heartbeat a thunderous drum in the narrow passage. He could feel Serenity's trembling form behind him, her presence grounding him even as his mind raced. He had to protect her, no matter the cost.

Nephrite's eyes narrowed, and with a flick of his wrist, he sent a wave of dark energy hurtling towards them. Endymion braced himself, raising his sword to meet the attack, the fate of their world hanging in the balance.
