Chapter 3: A New Day

The next morning, as the first rays of sunlight gently illuminated the room, William woke up feeling the warmth beside him. He opened his eyes and saw Julia, peacefully sleeping next to him. Her face looked relaxed, and the soft light illuminated her skin, giving it a radiant glow. He smiled warmly and gently kissed her to wake her up.

Julia stirred and opened her eyes. "Do you have to go to work today?" she asked hopefully, snuggling closer to him.

William sighed, stroking her cheek. "I would love nothing more than to stay home with you, but unfortunately, I have to go. The case at the hotel is still unsolved. I couldn't focus on it because I kept thinking about you, worried that something had happened to you."

"I'm here now, safe and sound," Julia smiled with a playful twinkle in her eyes. "And you, Inspector, need to learn to separate thoughts of me from your work."

William chuckled. "I'll try, but with a wife like you, that's no easy task."

"You have no idea how happy I am that you're here with me," William said, leaning in to kiss her passionately. "I really missed this."

"I missed it too," Julia replied softly, looking deeply into his eyes, feeling warmth in her heart.

William reluctantly got out of bed and went to the bathroom to freshen up and prepare for work. As he looked in the mirror, he tried to focus his thoughts on the tasks ahead, even though his heart told him to stay home. After a moment, he returned to the bedroom, where Julia was sitting on the bed, her hair slightly tousled, looking at him with love.

"Would you like something to eat before you go?" she asked, getting up.

"That's sweet of you," William replied, walking over and hugging her once more. "But don't worry about it. Just relax and enjoy your first day home after your return."

Julia smiled. "I'm sure a day with you would be better."

"Me too," William said, smiling. "I'll be thinking about you all day."

Before leaving the house, William peeked into Susannah's room. The little girl was sleeping peacefully, hugging her favorite teddy bear. William smiled at the sight, happy to see her so peaceful. After a moment, he returned to Julia, who was waiting for him in the living room.

"Susannah is sleeping soundly, cuddled up with her teddy bear. She looks very content," William said, smiling warmly.

"She's probably tired from all the excitement yesterday. But I'm sure she's happy to be back home and with her daddy," Julia said, smiling back at him.

"I'm happy that you both came back. It's the best thing that could have happened to me," William admitted, his voice filled with emotion.

As he was leaving the house, he took one last look at Julia. "See you this evening," he said, leaning in to kiss her, feeling her warmth and love. At the last moment, he paused as if remembering something important.

"How about we meet for lunch?" he suggested, looking at her hopefully. The desire to spend more time with her was stronger than usual.

Her face lit up at the thought, and her eyes sparkled with joy. "That's a great idea. I'll come by and pick you up, and we can go out. How does that sound?" she suggested enthusiastically.

William nodded with a smile, feeling his heart race at the thought of spending extra time with Julia that day. "That sounds wonderful. I can't wait."

Her smile gave him the strength to get through the day. Full of energy and renewed enthusiasm, he headed to work, already imagining them taking a walk to their favorite lunch spot, enjoying each other's company as a little escape from the daily grind—a small thing that made their life special.

At the station house, everyone immediately noticed his good mood. In the past few days, William had seemed down and lost in thought. So, his upbeat attitude today really surprised them.

"Good morning, sir!" George Crabtree called out as he saw him enter the office. "You look exceptionally happy this morning."

"You're right, George. It really is a good day," William replied with a broad smile.

"Does it have something to do with the hotel case? Did you solve it?" George asked, curiosity evident in his voice.

"Not yet, but I hope today will bring some answers. With the help of the team, I'm confident we can close this case," William responded, his tone full of optimism.

"If you don't mind me asking, what's with the good mood?" George asked, raising an eyebrow.

William smiled even wider and after a moment of thought replied, "It's because of Julia and Susannah, George. They came back home yesterday."

George smiled and said, "That's wonderful news. I'm really glad they're back."

"Their presence makes everything feel right again," William admitted, a sense of relief in his voice.

"Now that they're back, I can focus on work with a clear mind," William explained as he organized the papers on his desk. "We have a lot to get done."

George nodded, a gesture of understanding and support. "You can count on me, Inspector."

"Thank you, George," William said, feeling grateful for his colleague's support.

William was completely caught up in the hotel murder case he was determined to solve. As lunchtime approached, he realized he wouldn't be able to make it to his planned lunch with Julia. He called her to explain the situation. Julia took the news with understanding, which helped William focus on finishing his work, knowing they'd spend the evening together. That quick, though rushed, conversation gave him a sense of relief and the determination to wrap up the case and get home as soon as possible.

During their lunch at Scott's Diner, a spot popular with the constabulary, George noticed that Effie seemed lost in thought.

"Effie, I don't know if you've heard yet, but Julia is back home," George began, observing her reaction.

Effie put down her fork and looked at George in surprise, a complex mix of emotions crossing her face. "Really? That's... that's wonderful news! When?"

"Last night. The Inspector seems to be in great spirits because of it. He's been smiling all morning like never before," George said, smiling at the thought of the cheerful Inspector.

Effie sighed, feeling relieved but also a bit of guilt. "That must be such a relief for all of them. I must admit, I regret encouraging Julia to go away. I thought it was the best opportunity for her, but now I realize how much she must have missed home."

"That's true, family is the foundation. Sometimes it's hard to predict what will turn out to be the best in the long run," George noted, trying to comfort Effie.

"You're right. You know what? I'll visit her this afternoon. I need to welcome her back and personally apologize for my earlier advice. I want to see how she's doing," Effie decided, already planning the visit.

"That's a good idea. Julia will surely appreciate your honesty and presence," George stated, nodding in approval. "Let me know how it goes, okay?"

"Of course, George. And thank you for letting me know. I wouldn't have known she was back without you," Effie replied, thanking him with a smile.

They continued their meal, discussing everyday matters, but Effie's thoughts were already focused on the upcoming visit to Julia. After lunch, Effie thanked George once more and left "Scott's Diner," heading straight to the Murdoch home.

A few minutes later, after arriving, she rang the doorbell. Julia opened the door with a big smile.

"Effie!" she called out joyfully, opening the door wider.

Effie smiled broadly, but her smile was tinged with regret. "Julia! I'm so glad you're back! I had to visit you as soon as I heard."

As Effie stepped inside, Julia greeted her with a warm hug. "It's really nice of you to come," she said, leading Effie to the living room.

They brewed some tea together and sat in comfortable chairs. Susannah, who was also enjoying being back in the familiar surroundings, sat nearby playing with her toys.

Effie struggled to find the right words. "Julia, I want to apologize for pushing you to leave. I thought it would be a great career opportunity for you. But now, looking back at how much I missed George when he was away, I realize how hard it must have been for you to be so far from William."

Julia smiled gently, lightly touching Effie's hand. "I understand why you did it. Deep down, I thought it was also a chance for me to grow, even though I was never fully convinced about such a distant move. But being there, the longing for William was unbearable. Every day, looking at Susannah, who reminds me so much of her father, I realized how deeply connected I am to this place and the people who make up our lives."

Julia paused, her thoughts lingering on Susannah, who was playing on the living room floor. Her small hands skillfully stacked the building blocks. "I realized that the true value of life lies in these everyday moments with the people we love. Despite the opportunities that place offered me, it's here that I feel needed and fulfilled. Being so far away only intensified my longing for home, especially for William. His support, even from a distance, was my anchor, but the daily closeness with him and Susannah is irreplaceable."

Effie listened intently, her face reflecting a mix of emotions. After a moment of reflection, she mustered the courage for a personal confession. "Julia, I'm so happy you're back. I have to tell you something... I'm pregnant. George doesn't know yet; I just found out recently. It's all so new and a little scary for me."

Julia smiled warmly, squeezing Effie's hand. "Oh, Effie, that's wonderful news! Congratulations! I'm so glad I'm here to support you during this special time. Thank you for telling me."

Effie nodded, smiling through her tears. "Thank you, Julia. It means a lot. And now that you're back, I feel like we'll be able to support each other even more."

"We definitely will," Julia confirmed. "I want to use what I've experienced to cherish what we have here, in our home, in our city."

The conversation ended with plans on how they could further enjoy life and the support they had for each other. After saying goodbye to Julia, Effie left the Murdoch home, feeling reassured that their bond had grown stronger. She walked away with hope and calmness, thinking about what the future might bring.

Meanwhile, at the station, William was working hard to solve the hotel murder case. Finally, after many hours of intense work, he found the missing piece of the puzzle. It turned out that one of the victim's close friends had both the motive and the opportunity to commit the crime. William felt a sense of satisfaction as he closed the case, knowing that justice had been served.

As he stood up from his desk, his eyes fell on the letter he had forgotten to send earlier. He was glad he hadn't sent it, now that Julia was back home. William decided to take the letter with him, planning to give it to Julia on their anniversary.

That evening, when William returned home, he found Julia setting the table for dinner while Susannah played in the living room. He called out joyfully, "Hello, ladies" and looked forward to spending a peaceful evening with them.

He approached Julia, wrapped his arms around her from behind, and kissed her gently on the cheek. "How was your day?" he asked, glancing over her shoulder at the carefully arranged plates.

He walked up to Julia, wrapped his arms around her from behind, and gently kissed her on the cheek. "How was your day?" he asked, glancing over her shoulder at the neatly arranged plates.

Julia turned to look at him. 'Pretty calm. Susannah had a lot of energy today, but she's calmed down now,' she said, nodding towards the living room where their daughter was constructing a tower out of blocks.

"You look beautiful," William said.

At that moment, Susannah, hearing her father's voice, ran over to them, reaching up with her arms. William quickly lifted her up. "And how's my little architect? What beautiful thing are you building?" he asked as his daughter began to explain her creation.

Julia asked, "How was your case? Did you manage to solve it?"

"Yes, we finally closed the case. It was more challenging than I anticipated, but everything turned out well in the end," William replied.

Julia smiled broadly. "I knew you would do it," she said.

William put Susannah down, and she quickly returned to her play in the living room. Meanwhile, Julia and William sat down together for dinner. William shared more details about the case he had just closed. Julia listened attentively, asking questions and offering her thoughts on the situation. Later, Julia told William about Effie's visit.

After dinner, Julia took the dishes to wash, and William decided to join Susannah in the living room to help her finish building the block tower. They spent the rest of the evening enjoying quiet family time, something William especially valued after intense days at work.

After playtime, William and Julia tucked Susannah into her crib, reading her favorite bedtime story. Tired from the day's events, the little girl quickly fell asleep. In the peaceful atmosphere of the living room, under the soft light of a lamp, Julia began to tell William about her work in England. "It was an incredible experience," she said with enthusiasm, recalling her accomplishments.

She shared more details about her work and then, with a sigh, added, "But no professional success can replace being with you. All those achievements seem less important when I think about our family."

William, listening to her, felt a deep understanding of her words. "That's true," he replied. "Nothing is more important than our family. I'm so glad you're back."

Then William told her about his work, the latest cases, and changes at the station. "Miss Hart has decided to continue her career elsewhere," he mentioned, sharing the latest news.

"Who will be the coroner now?" Julia asked, looking at William with curiosity.

William looked at her with a subtle smile, and there was a spark in his eyes, a mix of nostalgia and respect. "It's not decided yet," he replied, his voice tinged with melancholy. "But no one will be able to replace the best coroner I've ever had the pleasure of working with." His gaze lingered on Julia for a moment, expressing more than words ever could.

Julia smiled slyly. "You mean Dr. Grace, right?" she teased with a wink.

William laughed, then squinted thoughtfully. "Dr. Grace was definitely good, but I've got to say, even she didn't quite measure up to you, Julia. Your dedication and methods were truly exceptional."

Julia nodded with a smile, appreciating their shared experiences and the mutual respect that had always existed between them.

As the conversation slowly came to an end, they both felt the weariness of a long day but also the joy of being together. William stood up and offered his hand to Julia, helping her to her feet. Tired but happy, they walked to their bedroom, where, in the soft glow of the bedside lamp, they continued to show their love for each other. Soon, they would be celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary, a special event just two weeks away.
