Ch. 30 - Kids are Just the Beginning
"I cannot believe you and Terukoko still have this ugly green sofa," Aiura wrinkled her nose in disgust. Her hands were placed firmly on her hips as she stared down the ugly piece of furniture that had sat in the living room of the Kusuo/Kokomi household since the day they moved in together. "It doesn't match anything else in your house!"
Well, if the offer we put in on the new place closer to Kokomi's school goes through, maybe we'll upgrade it. Saiki's voice spoke straight into her brain from another room. He sounded tired. I don't think a new couch is high on my priority list right now though.
"Definitely not! I just like pointing out how much I hate it every time I come visit," Aiura snickered before turning on her heel and letting herself fall onto the plush cushions of the sofa. "Now hurry up and bring me my niece!"
Saiki appeared in the doorway of the living room. If his voice had sounded tired then that was nothing compared to the poor psychic's face. Saiki had the beginnings of some dark circles under his eyes, which were drooping slightly like he could already tuck into bed for the day despite it being early afternoon. There was an ugly white/yellow stain on the left thigh of the brown pants he was wearing, and the t-shirt he had thrown on was more wrinkly than the old man that owned the flower shop and lived three doors down from her and Aren's new place. In each one of his arms he was cradling a baby, wrapped up snugly in a swaddling blanket. He did manage to smile at her tiredly though as he walked into the room.
Are you sure you want to hold her? I only just managed to get her to stop crying...
Aiura held out both of her arms expectantly, "This meeting has already been foretold by the universe. You cannot stop my visions from taking place. Now hand Kichi and sit down."
Saiki chuckled and walked over to the sofa. He carefully leant over and transitioned the babygirl into Aiura's waiting arms, then shifted the baby boy in his hold now that he had both arms free and sat down beside her. The only difference visible on the two children was the color of the tiny tufts of hair they had on their heads. The baby girl, Kichi, had a vibrant pink matching her father's and the baby boy, Kanon, had a dark blue matching his mother's.
Aiura immediately felt herself melting as she cradled the little girl closer, "I am going to spoil you so much. It's going to drive your parents crazy."
You're going to make Kanon jealous, Saiki snorted.
Aiura rolled her eyes, "I obviously meant I was going to spoil both of them, you nut," Then she leant her face closer to Kichi's and whispered, "Don't worry. I'll spoil you the most because us girls gotta stick together. Kanon will understand."
Saiki rolled his eyes, You're only saying that because you've been waiting to hold her in this vision for almost a decade.
"I can neither confirm nor deny that statement," Aiura shrugged, smiling softly as Kichi's little fingers appeared out of the blanket, opening and closing into a little fist as she slept. "Do I get to know the name's reasoning yet? Or did Terukoko want to tell me?"
Kokomi is resting right now. I don't think you'll see her today, she's exhausted. I've been doing everything I can to make sure these two don't wake her up before she gets the sleep today that she needs.
Aiura nodded, "You're so sweet to your wife. I can't even imagine how tired she must be after giving birth to twins. Kokomi is amazing."
That she is, Saiki smiled, But anyway, I can tell you the name's reasonings now that everyone has been told what they are. Kokomi won't mind.
"As long as you're sure."
Yeah, it's fine, Saiki shifted Kanon slightly in his arms, You know you were a huge part in picking their names technically speaking. Hearing about all of your visions of them really got Kokomi to try and make sure the names were perfect.
"Really?" Aiura grinned brightly, "Terukoko loved my visions that much?"
She always loves your visions, Saiki rolled his eyes, You shouldn't enable her as much as you do.
"Hey! You can't tell me to shoo away one of my most loyal customers. A girl's gotta eat."
Saiki's lips twitched upwards as he rolled his eyes again. Anyway. Kokomi wanted to keep with the K-theme name choice that my family has been doing to start. She likes to think that since she also has a first name starting with K that we were truly fated to be together and she also likes the idea of keeping a tradition going for as long as possible. Her family doesn't really have any traditions that they stick to.
"Cute as fuck." Aiura nodded, understanding.
Saiki laughed, Then you had to go and tell her sneak peeks of their personalities the second the doctors confirmed it was twins and that really sent her off as well. Two vastly different personalities needed fitting names. Perfect names.
Aiura nodded again, "Kokomi will always be Kokomi," She said fondly, "And yeah vastly different is right. Because this little cutie," She motioned to Kichi, "Is going to be a real trouble maker and that little cutie," She motioned to Kanon, "Is going to be a huge nerd."
As you've mentioned, Saiki shifted slightly again, rocking Kanon as the boy started to shift in his sleep. So Kokomi found the name Kanon in a baby book, and his name means polite and respectful. She thought the meaning and the name were perfect for your descriptions and that was that for him. Kanon Saiki was born.
"I think she's right," Aiura smiled at Kanon, "He does have the perfect name."
Saiki smiled, Kokomi will be ecstatic to hear that you think that.
Aiura laughed quietly, "I bet. And now what about Kichi? What does her name mean?"
Saiki looked away bashfully, adjusting his son in his arms so he could lift a hand to rub the back of his neck. Well, I actually was the one that picked out Kichi's name. I think Kokomi was hoping I would go the same route that she did and pick out a personality accurate name, but Kichi means fortunate and lucky. He turned his eyes back to meet his friends. I thought it was perfect because I have felt both of those things a lot in the last few years... and doubly so since finding out Kokomi was pregnant.
Auira nudged her shoulder against Saiki's, grinning at him teasingly, "You are just a big ol' softie Kusuo Saiki."
For today, I will try not to take that as an insult.
Aiura laughed again, though she quieted quickly when Kichi started to fuss slightly. A few quick rocks back and forth and some gentle shushing got the little girl back to sleep easy enough, though. The four of them sat there in the living room in a peaceful quiet for a bit after that. Aiura was content swaying Kichi in her arms and internally gushing over how stinking cute she was, and Saiki was content having any sort of break at all. His eyes started drooping again, aching to close for a nap that wasn't coming.
Of course peace had never lasted long in Saiki's life. You would think that by now he would have come to expect that.
"So... have you figured it out yet?" Aiura broke the silence casually, not meeting him in the eye.
Saiki glanced over at her tiredly. Figured what out?
Aiura grinned guiltily and turned to meet his eyes and then suddenly Saiki's brain was flooding with images from the fortune teller's latest visions. He blinked, dumbfounded as the images faded away.
You can't be serious.
When Kokomi Saiki woke up from her nap that day something felt off.
Usually the second she drifted into consciousness one of her newborns immediately started crying for her attention. This would of course cause her to leap from the bed and hurry to the nursery before her eyes were even fully open. She had a few nasty looking bruises on her arms and legs from doing this and walking into walls and doorways in her haste.
That's not what greeted her today though. Instead she lay awake in her and Kusuo's bed, slowly blinking away her tiredness for several minutes. She wasn't sure if she felt grateful for the unexpected quiet or if she was very worried at the difference in her children's actions. In the end she landed on grateful, as shifting in the bed to stretch reminded her that she was in fact still healing. Besides the bruises she still had stitches that had yet to be removed and just overall aches and pains still lingering from the trauma of childbirth.
After a few more minutes she figured she should probably get up and check on her babies. Stiffly rolling from the bed and onto her feet she grabbed her robe from the end of the bed and pulled it on, tying it loose to not upset her stitches. Kokomi yawned into her hand and left her bedroom to head down the hall to the nursery.
"Man if only the press could see me now," She thought, "The perfect pretty woman, unshowered, unshaved and with a half melted ice pack stuck inside of her hospital issued adult diaper." She sighed, "The pictures would be everywhere if they managed to get them."
There was no snarky comment in response to her thoughts, which was kind of weird. Kusuo had a tendency to kill her self deprecating thoughts the second he got wind of them. It wasn't like she needed him to do that. She wasn't really worried about the press anyway since only close friends and invited family were allowed in their house right now until she was feeling more like herself. It was just... odd. She had grown very used to Kusuo's constant commentary over their several years of marriage.
Had he left the house? She poked her head into the nursery. The room was dark, but the small amount of late afternoon/evening sunlight that was pouring in through the gap in the curtain and the wall made it easy enough for her to see. Both of her babies were safely in each of their cribs, fast asleep. She smiled, still amazed at the strength of the love that pierced her just from a glance at their little faces and then closed the door quietly. She would let them sleep and head to the kitchen to search for her husband.
Afterall he was definitely in the house if the babies were here, she knew he would never leave them alone while she was out like a light.
"Kusuo?"
I'm right here, Saiki's voice answered in her mind as she turned the corner and entered their kitchen. He was sitting at their table, a half drank mug of tea in front of him and a vacant look on his face as he stared at their walls. How did you sleep?
"Pretty good," Kokomi yawned into her hand as she responded, "I'm somehow still tired though. I'm not sure I'll ever feel rested again." She went over to the cupboard to pull out her own mug and make herself some tea. "How long have the kids been asleep?"
Saiki hummed and tapped his fingers against the side of his mug. Well they were out for maybe a half an hour, but then Aiura came over to visit and they woke up again not long after she got here. She stayed for a few hours to play with them and keep them entertained and then I put them back down maybe 10 minutes ago? He took a sip of his tea and sighed, Give or take a few minutes.
Kokomi smiled lovingly at her husband, walking over to run a hand through his hair softly as her water began to boil on the stove. "You didn't have to let me sleep that long. I would have gotten up and helped you."
Saiki leaned back into her tough, closing his eyes happily. You need your rest, Kokomi.
"Hmm," Kokomi kissed the top of his head, "Thank you." She whispered resting her forehead on his for a moment before the kettle made a noise like it was about to start to whistle. She rushed over to the stove to remove it from the heat before the sound could go off and wake her babies. "How was the visit with Aiura?"
Very... Enlightening.
Kokomi frowned and glanced back at her husband as she poured hot water into her awaiting mug and tea bag. "Enlightening?" She repeated and Saiki nodded. When she had stepped away from him he had gone back to staring vacantly at their kitchen wall. Kokomi headed back over and took the seat at the table across from him, setting down her steaming mug with a small thud. "Kusuo... are you ok?"
Finally, Saiki's eyes moved and focused on her face. He blinked, several times, as if he had to physically pull himself out of his own thoughts. Yeah... I guess I'm just not looking forward to having to speak to my brother.
"Why would you need to speak with Kusuke?" Kokomi frowned, her brows furrowing as she lifted her mug to her lips to have a sip.
Because our children are psychics.
She froze halfway into taking her drink. Saiki used his telekinesis to pull the mug from her grasp and set it back down on the table before she could burn herself. Then he waited, watching as his wife ran through all of the same thoughts and scenarios that he had been dealing with for the last several hours. The same shocked, dumbfounded, how did we not think of that as a possibility, thoughts that were still plaguing him now.
"Aiura told you this?" She finally spoke once her brain had quieted down a bit.
Saiki shook his head. She showed me it. Then after seeing her visions I verified it for myself.
Kokomi choked on air, "They're already showing signs of psychic powers!?"
Only some, Saiki nodded, taking a slow sip of his drink, They haven't mastered real words yet, but they can both use telepathy. I'm certain of that.
"How?"
Saiki smiled tiredly, The biggest clue was them knowing, down to the exact second, that you woke up and when to start calling for you.
Kokomi laughed in disbelief. "I guess that does make sense." Her eyes fell to her hands on the table in front of her and embarrassingly tears began pooling in her eyes. The sudden loss of being able to surprise her children for their birthdays or for Christmas hit her like a truck. Postpartum was really being a bitch to her tonight.
Saiki reached over and took her hand, I'm sorry, Kokomi. I should have figured that this was a possibility. If you hadn't wanted -
"Don't you dare," Kokomi whipped her head up to look her husband in the eyes even while tears spilled over and down her cheeks, "No matter what I would always choose to have these children with you."
But you're crying, Saiki frowned and squeezed her hand. It's ok if you're upset about this.
"I'm not upset, I'm just emotional," Kokomi sniffed and used her free hand to wipe the tears from her cheeks. "I know I look miserable, and horrible-"
You look beautiful.
Kokomi smiled at her husband, "I'm not sad. Kusuo," She reached out and took his other hand in hers as well, "You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Every day I've been able to spend with you has made me so happy. To think that our children are going to be even half as special as you are..." She laughed quietly, "That's not something to be upset about at all."
Saiki's eyes softened, Kokomi...
"Besides," She squeezed his hands once before letting go so she could finally grab onto her mug and take a long drink of her tea before speaking again, "We have so many people that know about you that we trust. So I imagine if we can trust them with your secret we can trust them with Kichi and Kanon as well." The grinning faces of their friends flashed through her mind as she took another long drink, sighing happily. "We're going to have all the support in the world for this."
Saiki chuckled, That's true. We'll certainly have more help than my parents had with me.
"You see!" Kokomi's grin brightened, "We're going to be ok, Kusuo. I am sure of it."
Saiki smiled at her softly, You are always right.
"I know," She giggled and Saiki's smile only grew at the optimistic, loving thoughts of his wife.
I love you so much Kokomi. You, Kichi and Kanon mean more to me than...
"Coffee Jelly?"
Saiki snorted, Of course you mean more to me than coffee jelly. I was going to say something more romantic like the world, or the universe or something.
Kokomi's eyes were prickling with tears once again, though this time it was uncontrollable joy overtaking her. "I think you underestimate how romantic I find you saying you love me more than coffee jelly is."
Saiki rolled his eyes, but he smiled when he said, Kokomi Saiki, I love you and our two children more than I love coffee jelly.
Several tears slipped down her cheeks as she beamed at him, "Kusuo Saiki, I love you and our two children more than I love anything in the world." She chuckled, "Even myself."
Right around that time one of the twins started crying loudly. Kokomi jumped at the sound quickly getting up.
"My duty calls," She laughed leaning over to give her husband a quick kiss on the lips before she hurried off to see to her babies.
Saiki smiled, lifting his mug up to finish his tea. Maybe god doesn't hate me that much after all.
The End
Hello readers;
I am not generally one to write author's notes. Mostly because I never know what to say. However I really wanted to say I am sorry for taking 6 long years to finish this story for you. Those of you who started reading in 2018, thank you for sticking with me for so long. I hope the last five chapters were worth the wait.
I also just want to mention that this entire story was written after seeing one specific fanart of the Saiki x Teruhashi family. This is the link here for anyone that wants to see the muse of this story.
