"Fuck," says Roman suddenly as they leave, heading for the car.
"What?" says Shiv.
"Connor. We have to tell him. Right now."
They look at each other, remembering how they failed to get Connor on the boat.
"You're right," says Kendall. "We should call him right away."
"I'll do it." Roman takes out his phone and fumbles with the screen, finally unlocking it and pressing Connor's number.
After only a couple of rings, Connor's voice answers, sounding jovial, loud enough for the others to hear. "Hey, Romey!"
"Hi, Con." Roman's voice is strained, but he holds it together. "I'm with Shiv and Ken."
"That's good. I knew you guys would work it out."
"Actually, it's uh." Roman falters, looking to Kendall for help. "It's a funny story actually. We just saw Dad."
"You went to the mausoleum?" Connor sounds slightly hurt that they went without him.
"Nope. We saw him at the summer palace, actually. He invited us there. It turns out he's not dead!" Roman delivers the news like Connor has won a new car.
There's a silence, then Connor says, in a sharper tone than normal, "That's really not funny, Rome."
"No, really. It turns out he faked the whole thing. The trip to see Matsson, the collapse on the plane, all of it. Tom was in on it too."
"Uh huh." Connor's tone has turned to one of gentle concern. "Can I speak to Kendall?"
"Uh, sure." Roman holds out the phone to Kendall, who glances helplessly at Shiv as he takes it.
"Hey, Con," Kendall manages.
"Kenny. Is Roman okay?"
"It's true, Connor." Kendall closes his eyes. "He's alive. We just saw him."
"Have you lost it too? Kenny—"
"He faked it," Kendall blurts loudly. "What you saw at the funeral home, it wasn't real. It was a fucking… waxwork or something. He staged the whole thing, just to stop us fucking him over with Matsson."
There's an even longer silence.
"Right," Connor says finally. "Well, that does sound like Pa. I always had my suspicions, truth be told." Kendall can't help rolling his eyes.
"Con, we need to figure out what to do. We're just keeping you in the loop."
"Right, well, I appreciate that, Kenny."
"Don't tell Willa yet, okay? This is need to know…"
"Cross my heart and hope to die." Connor sounds slightly hysterical now.
"Bye, Con." Kendall ends the call and hands the phone back to Roman. Before he can say anything else, Shiv doubles over in laughter.
"What? Shiv, are you okay?" Roman sounds alarmed, reaching out for her.
"We didn't do it," Shiv says, wiping her eyes. It's hard to tell if she's laughing or sobbing now. "We didn't kill him after all."
"Not yet," Roman murmurs, steering her to the car.
